"The ecological costs related to the various optimized production schemes were calculated based on the designed ultimate pit. Moreover, the influence of the ecological costs on the selection of production schemes was discussed. In one designed pit, a series of geologically optimum pushbacks with sufficiently small increment were produced using the floating cone method founded on the principle of the highest metal content. Then all the pushbacks were reordered by the dynamic network diagram. The production scheme with the maximum NPV route was considered as the optimum one. The ecological impacts produced by mining were quantified and the ecological cost calculation models, which contain the direct eco-value loss, the indirect eco-value loss, the eco-restoration cost and the carbon emission cost were proposed. In one big open pit mine case, various production schemes were optimized and the one with maximum NPV was selected without taking into account the eco-costs. The scheme with the maximum comprehensive profit was obtained by calculating the eco-cost of each scheme. The results showed that the best scheme considered with the eco-cost was not the scheme with the maximum NPV. Therefore, the eco-cost presents the effect on the selection of the best production scheme.Introduction Optimizing production scheme is to determine the mining quantities of ore and rock, the pushing position of stope each year, and maximize the NPV of mine. In the theory, production scheming optimization has gone through trial and error (Pana and Carlson 1966), linear programming method (Johnson 1968), mixed integer programming (Gershon 1983), integer mapping (Kim and Cai 1990), dynamic programming et al (Gu et al 2014). In recent years, the study on production scheduling optimization has been focused on two aspects. On the one hand, the study is to solve the investment risk caused by the uncertainties of economic and geological environment (Ramazan and Dimitrakopoulos 2013, Marcotte and Caron 2010, Lamghari and Dimitrakopoulos 2012, Godoy and Dimitrakopoulos 2004, Benndorf and Shishvan 2014). On the other hand, the emphasis of the study was on reducing the problems for the optimization algorithm, to make it more efficient and practical (Cullenbine et al 2011, Shishvan and Sattarvand 2015, Askari-Nasab et al 2011, Nasab et al 2010). However, different production schemes cause different damage of mine land and pollutant emission, thus triggering environment problem. With the improvement of people’s consciousness of environment protection, the environmental issue of mining has been attracting more and more attention."

"In the present work, we investigate the effects of roasting temperature and time on the transformation of the titanium (Ti)-bearing phase and magnesium aluminate spinel (MgAl2O4) phase in Ti-bearing electric arc furnace molten slag during the molten sodium hydroxide (NaOH) treatment process. With applied temperature of 700 °C for 60 min, and a mass ratio of Ti-bearing electric arc furnace slag to NaOH, or Rslag/NaOH, of 1:1.2, the conversion ratios of the Ti-bearing phase and the MgAl2O4 phase reached about 98.3 percent and 88.1 percent, respectively. Moreover, investigation of the reaction kinetics indicate that the conversion of these phases during the molten NaOH treatment process is a typical solid-liquid reaction, and it can be theoretically described by the unreacted shrinking core model. The conversion ratio of the Ti-bearing phase was found to be controlled by the chemical reaction step, with an apparent activation energy of 41.76 kJ/mol. The decomposition of the MgAl2O4 phase was found to be controlled by the surface chemical reaction in the early stage of 0 to 20 min from start of reaction, changing to diffusion control in the later stage of 20 to 60 min. The apparent activation energies of the process were determined as 55.88 and 22.72 kJ/mol, respectively.IntroductionChina has rich mineral resources of vanadium–titanium magnetite ore deposits, and the iron and steel industry in the country produces millions of tons of titanium (Ti)-bearing slag every year. The problem of how to dispose of the Ti-bearing slag has attracted much attention, and various approaches have been developed, including the acid process (Li et al., 2007; Zhang et al., 2011; Zhang and Nicol, 2010; Li et al., 2011), alkali fusion process (Han et al., 2012; Middlemas, Fang and Fan, 2013; Nayl, Awwad and Aly, 2009; Lasheen, 2008; Zhang, Qi and Zhang, 2009), carbonization and chlorination process (Liu et al., 2008; Tao et al., 2012; Fu et al., 2012; Liu, 2009), selective crystallization process (Lei and Xue, 2008; Li et al., 2011; Zhang et al., 2007a, 2007b). However, these processes have been beset by various functional, economical and ecological problems (Yu and Chen, 2010). With environmental protection regulations becoming increasingly rigorous, and demand growing for the comprehensive utilization of resources, the focus is on methods to treat Ti-bearing slag with high efficiency and mild reaction conditions (Nazari and Riahi, 2011; Wu et al., 2013)."

Introduction The Summitville Mine located in southwestern Colorado was added to the National Priorities List in June of 1994. Summitville was the site of mining operations that began in 1873 with the discovery and development of gold placer and lode deposits in the late 1800's. The mine site is located about 25 miles south of Del Norte, Colorado in the San Juan Mountains adjacent to the Rio Grande National Forest at an approximate altitude of 11,600 feet. The site was mined for gold, silver and copper between 1873 and 1947. The Summitville Consolidated Mining Corporation, Inc. (SCMCI), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Galactic Resources, Ltd of Vancouver, Canada ran a large tonnage open-pit mine and cyanide heap leach operation from 1986 to 1992 (Pendleton and Posey, 1992) During the mine operation by SCMCI, approximately 10 million tons of gold ore was mined, crushed and stacked on a lined leach pad. Heap leach operations experienced water balance and unplanned solution discharges from the start of the mine life. Despite the production of 249,000 troy ounces of gold during the mine operation, SCMCI was unable to meet remedial requirements and notified the state of Colorado of its intention to file a Chapter VII bankruptcy in December 1992. The EPA Region VIII Emergency Response Branch took over site operations on December 16, 1992 to prevent a catastrophic release of hazardous substances to the environment. The multiple contamination sources at the mine site are due to both historic and SCMCI mining operations. Emergency response operations at the site have prevented releases of severely contaminated solution and a permanent treatment for all waste units at the site is under investigation. A Request for Proposal (RFP) was issued in October 1993 by Environmental Chemical Corporation (ECC) at the Request of EPA Region VIII, Department of the Interior and Bureau of Reclamation. The RFP requested that interested companies provide information on their ability to implement innovative treatment technologies to improve treatment efficiency and reduce treatment costs for remediation of the heap leach pad (HLP) spent ore and ore leachate solutions. Dames & Moore and Pintail Systems, Inc. (PSI) jointly submitted a proposal suggesting application of biotreatment processes for detoxification of cyanide in spent ore and HLP leachate solutions. The proposal was accepted for pilot and field demonstration under the SPA Superfund Innovative Technology Demonstration Program (SITE) with additional funding from EPA Region VIII. This report discusses the test program and results of a Focused Feasibility Study which demonstrated biotreatment processes for spent ore cyanide detoxification.

INTRODUCTION Certain activities, such as emergency work and rescue operations, often have to be undertaken in environments where heat loads often exceed limits prescribed for routine work. This is particularly relevant to the South African mining industry where heat stress-induced fatalities are not uncommon during rescue operations. In this regard an excessively hot environment is defined as one where either the dry-bulb temperature exceeds 37,0°C or the wet-bulb temperature exceeds 32,5"C, and it is therefore not surprising that heat stroke mortality escalates rapidly when these limits are exceeded. A review of both local and international standards indicated that the available information on safe exposure times under abnormal heat stress conditions is very limited. Where available, such standards are aimed at the general population, including both sexes, irrespective of age and also the least heat tolerant worker, and not at a medically-screened, all-male population free of grossly heat intolerant individuals, as is the case in the South African mining industry. It is suggested that available norms and limits are too conservative for local application and, therefore, unrealistic. In view of the definite need to protect workers when exposed to abnormally high environmental temperatures, the present study was undertaken to establish a scientifically derived data base. applicable to local conditions, to determine safe exposure times: Any exposure limit, especially in an emergency situation, should be easy to administer, valid and reliable. These aspects, there- fore, form an integral part of this paper. FORMULATION OF HEAT STRESS LIMITS The formulation of heat stress limits was based on the criterion that a heat exposed individual should experience a negligible risk of developing dangerously elevated body temperatures. In order to provide a database for risk assessment, certain physiological responses of heat tolerant men were determined at various combinations of thermal conditions and work rate in a climatic chamber. These physiological responses were analysed statistically in order to predict safe survival and tolerance times as a function of thermal conditions and work rate. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN A total of 202 randomly selected, medically fit mine workers volunteered for the study on the basis of informed consent. These men were considered to be inherently heat tolerant in as far as they had successfully completed a heat tolerance test (Anon., 1991) or the standard climatic room acclimatisation procedure used on many South African gold mines (Anon., 1989). Currently, around 100 million tons of construction materials and aggregates are shipped annually by rail. And recently, producers are looking much more carefully at rail not only to reduce fixed costs through increased volume, but also to eliminate operating headaches, such as increasing community pressures about trucks on the road, noise and dust. Many producers are uncertain as to how to enter the rail shipping business since railroads have historically been reluctant to ship small quantities short distances. This article provides strategies to help producers examine and pursue moving their rock by rail.

Several experiments were conducted using a large crib fire adjacent to a Kennedy Metal Products steel stopping in a simulated cross cut to evaluate the proposed mechanisms by which a mine fire would breach the stopping. Temperatures in the convective air paths on both sides of the stopping, at the surface of the roof and 16mm within the roof were measured to evaluate the effects of heat transfer. The results indicate that roof failure is the prime method of breaching this design of stopping.

Background In the mining industry, conversion of fine particles into a slurry is often part of the normal processing of the ore. Therefore, from a system's point of view, slurry transporta¬tion would be considered as a natural alternative, all the way from the working face to the final processing. In underground mines, there is sometimes a considerable inflow of ground water that has to be pumped out. When the mine dewatering installations are integrated with a hydraulic hoisting system, the cost of power needed to pump out the ground water can be excluded from the cost of hoisting, compared with other modes of transporting the solids to the surface. The chief advantage of hydraulic hoisting is that the hoisting capacity can be increased at comparatively low total cost without necessitating the sinking of new shafts. Alterna¬tive examples include deepening of the existing mechanical hoisting system, truck, or conveyor belts transport in ramps to the present level. These often become very expensive. The economic effectiveness of hydraulic hoisting and hydraulic design considerations have been discussed by Kostuik (1965) and Sellgren (1985, 1986) for both small shallow mines and large deep underground mines. Objective and scope The objective of this study was to demonstrate the feasi¬biliy of hydraulic hoisting in hypothetical examples of mine deepening. Underground grinding to a maximum particle size of about 700 um (about 25 mesh) is considered. The pumping of ground ore products with positive displacement plunger or membrane type of pumps at working pressures of up to 15 MPa (2200 psi) is a thoroughly tested technique (Venton, 1986). Hydraulic hoisting system A hydraulic hoisting system is described schematically in Fig. l . The ore is mined, handled, and crushed conventionally. It is then ground wet underground. The slurry is then tempo¬rarily stored in an agitated tank and pumped to an agitated receiving tank on the surface. The ore is then further processed in the concentrator. The capacity of a pipeline is very high. For example, an annual production of 500 Kt (550,000 st) of ore can be handled in a 100-mm-diam (4-in.-diam) pipeline. Systems layout - economic effectiveness Schematic mine layouts are presented that represent situ¬ations where hydraulic hoisting often is the most economical alternative. A situation where the ore is trucked to the level of the existing hoisting system is shown in Fig. 2 (following page). With hydraulic hoisting, only a shaft for ventilation, pipe¬line, and personnel are needed. In a first phase (Fig. 2), a hydraulic hoisting installation with crushing and grinding units, storage facilities, and pumps has been located at a level of about 400 to 600 m (1310 to 1970 ft) below the surface. Operators depend upon the success of backfilling programs to ensure that mine activities run continuously (Archibald et al, 1993) where backfilling is an integral part of the mining cycle. In order to ensure that the backfill is prepared and delivered to the stope possessing the required engineering properties, as designed, and that the backfilling process is safe, mine operators at all stages of the backfilling system must be adequately trained for their tasks and be aware of how their work affects other backfilling stages, both up- and down-stream of their station. Mine operator training is primarily based on learning on-the-job from experienced supervisors or training personnel. Classroom training and the availability of reference manuals are less common. While in use by many industries for some time now, computer-based training (CBT) is becoming more readily accepted by the mining industry for a wide variety of training. It is not intended to replace on-the-job training, but to augment it. CBT offers many advantages to enhance operator learning by utilizing multimedia presentations, interactions and on-line testing to teach complex concepts and relationships. Discussions with many operations revealed that there is an industry need for a backfill guide for frontline operator training and as a reference manual for operators and mine engineers. Sponsored by the mining industry and the CIM, "Mine Backfill, An Operator's Guide" has been developed by the Departments of Mining Engineering at Queen's University and McGill University to fulfil this need. "Mine Backfill, An Operator's Guide" is an interactive multimedia package that incorporates high quality colour images, animations, sound, and video with text to review the main backfill methods employed in Canada, including hydraulic/slurry, paste and rock fill. The Guide is divided into training and reference primer sections. When in training mode, the operator is guided through a presentation of common mining and backfill practices and technologies so that he/she may become more familiar with different aspects of backfill processes. To ensure that key concepts have been learned during training, the operator will be tested after each section using a series of multiple choice and true/false questions. When in reference mode, alternatively, the operator may browse through the information in a more detailed and independent fashion through a series of interactive menus. The Guide focuses on the following main topics: resources, surface preparation, distribution, stope activities, health and safety, and quality control. Special features included in the Operator's Guide are a Buyer's Guide, a Trouble Shooting Guide, and an interactive glossary of backfill and mining terms. Concepts in interactive and computer-based learning are also reviewed in this paper.

Introduction Most high purity silica is produced from crystalline quartz, generally from sand. However, there is a small area of southern Illinois where a porous, friable white chert rock is found that is very different in physical form from quartz sand. This microcrystalline material, commonly referred to as tripoli, is more easily ground to micron sizes than sand. Although of similar Moh's hardness, microcrystalline tripoli is less abrasive than either ground quartz sand or many synthetic abrasives. Location The southwestern corner of Illinois is underlain by extensive deposits of very porous chert; in some places the material is quite white. Two companies, Illinois Minerals Co. and Tammsco Inc., mine and process this white material. The Illinois Minerals plant is located at Elco, and the Tammsco plant is in Tamms, IL. Both companies mine from various locations within a 10-mile truck haul of their plants. Production from this district has been continuous since at least 1915. Malvern Minerals Co. mines and processes a generally similar microcrystalline, friable novaculite near Hot Springs, AR. Geology The southern Illinois white tripoli area is on the southern flank of the Illinois Basin. The commercial silica zone is a facies of the Clear Creek chert of Lower Devonian Age. To the north, where it occurs deep in the basin, the Clear Creek is a siliceous limestone. In the mining area, thin overburden has allowed access by surface ground water, which has leached away the carbonate content and left a quite pure silica residue. Fossils characteristic of sea bottom deposition, such as brachiopods and trilobites, are occasionally encountered in mining. The structure of the mining area is poorly known, due to infrequent outcrops. Strata in most mines are inclined at dips of 5° to 20°. There appear to be occasional high angle normal and reverse faults, but these are seldom of any significance in mining. The friable white silica zone mined in the Clear Creek chert is overlain by dark brownish-red chert and siliceous shale. Exploration drilling to date has not encountered the base of the microcrystalline tripolitic zone. Chemical content Leaching by ground water solution has removed virtually all the carbonate from the original siliceous limestone. Impurities encountered are red to yellow iron oxides, aluminous clays, and occasional black manganese oxides. The silica has no detectable formula water. A typical chemical analysis and physical properties are listed in Tables 1 and 2. Mineralogy and crystallinity Southern Illinois friable tripoli appears amorphous under the polarizing microscope. No crystal structure and only occasional, vague, patchy anisotropism is evident. However, the material gives an excellent quartz X-ray diffraction pattern. The United States Department of the Interior's Office of Surface Mining (OSM) is responsible for regulating active coal mining and reclaiming abandoned coal mines in the United States. In working with the State government agencies that implement these programs, OSM is building a new approach that moves away from traditional "command and control" regulation and towards an approach that focuses on providing long-term environmental and economic sustainability on lands disturbed by coal mining. This initiative called "Reclaim the Future!" looks to enhance opportunities for economic development, wildlife preservation and enhancement, reforestation, and other beneficial and productive uses of lands disturbed by coal mining. The initiative is also focused on ensuring that the landowners and the local public have significant involvement in determining how best to reclaim mine sites and what post-mining land uses are most appropriate for each individual abandoned mine reclamation project or active mine reclamation. Through the use of the best scientific input in an open, participatory process, OSM hopes to further sustainable development principles for coal mining within the framework of existing United States law.

In recent years, mining operations have experienced the impacts of climate variability, increasing costs, and changes in the socioenvironmental dynamics of the territories. For this reason, the aggregates industry needs to design and define concrete and immediate actions to address climate change. An appropriate way to achieve this is as follows: • Calculate greenhouse gas emissions, sources, and relevance factor. • Make projections of future scenarios. • Design and implement action plans The proposed climate change mitigation and adaptation projects are logistical optimizations of mining equipment (mitigation). Second is the design of an early warning system to predict possible flooding (adaptation).

INTRODUCTION Phosphatic resources may be quantified in terms of ore tons and phosphate analyses; however, to quantify phosphate reserves it is necessary to estimate the tons and quality of phosphate rock that can be extracted from the ore. The yield and grade of phosphate rock that can recovered from sedimentary phosphate deposits are usually difficult to estimate because of variations in stratigraphy and/or mineralogy. Prospecting phosphorite ores for purposes of estimating reserves and preparing mine plans requires considerably more effort than defining ore thickness and P205 content. In Florida, for example, it is standard practice to prospect by core drilling and to subject each strata (split) to beneficiation testing, and to perform detailed chemical analyses on the beneficiated products from each strata. For a completed drilling pattern the area of influence of each hole is 2.5 acres. The number of strata per drill hole typically varies from two to five, and thus complete prospecting of a 40acre tract requires drilling 16 core holes and beneficiation testing of about 48 ore samples. Florida practice is not appropriate for all phosphorite deposits. Functional drill rigs and trained drillers may not be readily available. Water for core drilling may be unavailable and the characteristics of either the overburden or ore may require careful attention and excessive cost to obtain representative core samples. Alternate ore sampling methods include auger drilling, rotary drilling to obtain cuttings, and the excavation of trenches, pits, and shafts. Drill cuttings samples are generally the least expensive to obtain, but they are usually unsuitable for beneficiation testing because of particle size reduction during drilling. Ore samples from surface trenches and pits are expensive and may not be representative of deeper ore. Ore samples from shafts are the most expensive to obtain, but if taken properly they are reliable for use in laboratory and pilot plant testing. Regardless of the prospecting technique used, reliable estimates of the yield and grade of phosphate rock that can be extracted from an ore deposit are required: • to justify capital expenditures for a new mine • for mine design and mine planning • for beneficiation plant design • for production forecasts, quality control, and marketing. This paper describes models that predict the beneficiation response of ores from three phosphate ore deposits. The purpose of these models is to obtain maximum utilization of available prospect data with the least cost. ORE DEPOSITS Simple beneficiation models have been developed for ores from three sedimentary phosphate deposits around the Mediterranean area. The first deposit, herein described as "A" ore, is located north of the Mediterranean Sea. The second deposit, designated as "B" ore, is located east of the Mediterranean Sea, while the third deposit, "C" ore, is located south of the Mediterranean Sea. Ore "C" is from the Sra Ouertane deposit in northwestern Tunisia.

There are several simulators available and are being used for analysis, improvement and optimal control of the grinding process. However, these tend to be developed on informal software engineering methodologies. The informal approach is not suitable for long term development and a formal design methodology is necessary to develop efficient, error-free, and easy-to-use and to maintain software. In meeting this goal, basic concepts of a software model for describing the mineral process objects has been proposed. The software model forms the basis for software design and efficient implementation of the simulation. This paper describes the development of software models for grinding circuits. The work constitutes the theoretical foundation for the development of an advanced simulator for comminution.

Introduction The need for water is fundamental to every minerals processing operation. Though this may sound rather elementary, it is one area that cannot be over- looked. Frank C. Quinn in his paper entitled "Water Is Water Is Water" (1967) said, "but it isn't as simple as that. Very often research is slowed down and production is hampered because of a lack of appreciation for the behavior of water." The quantity of water needed for any operation is determined from bench and pilot plant testing. The quality required by the process for both fresh and reuse water is also established during these two testing phases. Quinn's statements are true whether the process involves the paper industry, the minerals industry, or any other industry. It is not the author's intent to cover water quality, quantity, or re- cycle in specific terms, but to provide the reader with a general outline of the topic with reference to several valuable sources of information. The first part of the chapter will cover several of the areas that have been de- tailed by others and also provide a list of reference sources. The references at the end of the chapter are not all inclusive but will provide a good starting point. In the second part of the chapter, a detailed description, with flowsheet illustrations, is pro- vided on the evolution of the reclaim (reuse) water system at the Tilden concentrator. Mineral Industry Water Needs Beresford and Edler (1978) surmnarized the minerals industry's need for water this way: "minerals are necessary to a modern complex technological society. The minerals industry, while its water needs are relatively minor compared to large users such as agriculture, nevertheless requires a large quantity of water to carry out daily operations from mining to final product refining." In 1973 total water use in the United States was estimated at 15.14 billion cubic meters (4 trillion gallons) for the minerals industry. Of this, about 69% was recirculated within the system. In 1982 Watt and Horton stated that the percent of recycled water in the minerals industry had improved to 73%, showing the minerals industry is an efficient user of water and that steady improvement in water recycling is something the minerals industry can look to with pride. The percent of water needed by the United States' minerals industry was estimated in 1962 to be about 2% of the total water required by industry

Canadian sylvinites contain over 90% of KCl and NaCl and a few percent of water-insoluble minerals. Cationic flotation is used to produce KCl concentrates. Since water-insoluble minerals appear in the pulp as slimes, and since long-chain primary amines are utilized as a collector, desliming is essential. The potash industry utilizes different desliming methods. This may involve selective flocculation of the slimes with polyacrylamide and removal of the flocculated product by flotation, or mechanical desliming with the use of classifying cyclones. Whichever method is applied, desliming is never complete; the flotation feed after desliming still contains about one percent of the slimes which heavily affect collector consumption and flotation selectivity. Therefore, the remaining slimes have to be rendered inactive by “blinding” them with polymers such as carboxymethyl cellulose or guar gum. The commercial blinders used by the potash industry include natural and synthetic polysaccharides. The most common is the use of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and guar gum (GG). These are quite different polymers, while CMC is anionic, GG is non-ionic; while the applied CMCs are of relatively low molecular weight (about 300,000) GGs have much higher molecular weight. Guar gums are also heavily used as the depressants of naturally floatable gangue in the processing of platinum-bearing ores, and according to Harris et al. (1999) quite a large variety of modified guar gums are available in South Africa for this application. Cheng et al. (2002) claim that natural guar gum’s molecular weight is 1.935 • 106. Robinson et al. (1982) found that the molecular weights of five grades of commercial guar gums ranged from 4.4 • 105 to 16.5 • 105. The highest molecular weight sample is then very close to the natural guar gum studied by Cheng et al. (2002). According to the manufacturer, the Rantec KP4000 guar gum which is used by the Canadian potash industry has a molecular weight of about 1.5 x 106. Since both KCl and NaCl are soluble in water, the flotation process is carried out in saturated brine. At 20 oC, 1450 kg of NaCl-KCl-H2O saturated solution contains about 0.300 kg of NaCl, 0.150 kg of KCl, and 1 kg of water (Gaska et al., 1965). Thus, in the saturated NaCl-KCl brine there are about 5.1 kmole of NaCl and 2 kmole KCl per 55.5 kmole of water. This gives 3.9 molecules of water per each ion assuming complete dissociation of NaCl and KCl. Thus, it is obvious that all water molecules in the saturated brine must be bound in the hydration shells around the hydrated ions. The surface tension of the NaCl-KCl saturated brine was recently measured to be 85 mN/m (Laskowski et al., 2003).

INTRODUCTION This article describes the yellow cake drying, packaging and dust collection circuit of the United Nuclear Church Rock Mill. It also describes the layout and floor plan of this section as well as the operation and performance of the various equipment. In order to place the yellow cake section in perspective of the mill as a whole, the mill circuit is described briefly. CHURCH ROCK MILL GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Church Rock Mill contains six operating sections shown in Figure 1 in block diagram form. The grinding section consists of a semi-autogenous mill in closed circuit with a hydrocyclone. The slurry is then routed to the leaching tanks. Sulfuric acid and sodium chlorate is added to dissolve the uranium. The pulp is transferred from the leach tanks to the thickeners where the uranium bearing liquid is separated from the barren solids. The uranium bearing solution is then filtered and pumped to the solvent extraction section. [ ] In the solvent extraction section, the uranium bearing aqueous solution is brought into contact with an organic solution composed of kerosene, amine and isodecanol. The amine extracts the uranium from the aqueous solution. This organic solution is then routed to the stripping section, where the uranium is removed from the organic solution with an ammonium sulfate aqueous solution. The pregnant stripping solution now concentrated to 30 gpl U308 is routed to the precipitation tanks where ammonia is added to precipitate the uranium. The yellow cake is then washed in a counter current circuit of two thickeners and one centrifuge to remove impurities, mainly sulfates in order to meet specifications. The centrifuge centrate is routed to the second wash thickener for forward wash. The centrifuge cake at approximately 50% solids consistency is transferred to the yellow cake dryer via a screw conveyor. YELLOW CAKE DRYING, PACKAGING AND DUST COLLECTION Figure 2 shows the flowsheet of the integrated circuit of drying, packaging and dust collection. This section of course centers around the yellow cake dryer as the main equipment. The other main units are the dust collectors for the dryer and packaging respectively, a yellow cake storage bin and the yellow cake packaging facilities. Physically, all of this equipment occupies four floors, beginning at the top floor: 1. Both dust collector fans, the centrifuge and the screw conveyor to transport the yellow cake to the dryer. 2. The dryer, fire box and both dust collectors occupy the third floor. Figure 3 shows the floor plan of the third and fourth floors. 3. The yellow cake storage bin and dryer dust collector sump are located on the second floor. 4. The ground floor houses the loading facilities consisting of two load out ports from the bin to barrels, a roller conveyor loop, drum weighing scale, and change room facilities. Figure 4 shows the ground floor plan. Figure 5 is an elevation view of this section showing the overall equipment arrangement.

The Getchell and Twin Creeks mines are located along a north-northeast trending structural zone in Humboldt county, Nevada approximately 40 miles northeast of the town of Winnemucca. Gold mineralization at the Getchell mine is represented principally by sulfide-rich ores, which contain significant amounts of realgar and\ orpiment, with the gold being recovered through processes which involve pressure oxidation. In contrast, oxide ores are currently being mined and processed at the Twin Creeks mine although large reserves of sulfide ores, some of which contain orpiment-realgar-stibnite, have been defined (Bloomstein et al., 1990). The Getchell and Twin Creeks mines represent major gold orebodies but very little has been published pertaining to mineral paragenesis and the characteristics of ore-forming fluids for these deposits.

To meet the growing need for CO2 capture and storage technology, Michigan Technological University is researching CO2 capture and storage using carbonate solutions. The objective of the present study was to increase the absorption rate of CO2 into the carbonate solution without reducing the absorption capacity of the solution. This approach used a polypropylene glycol methyl ether (PPGME) as a surfactant to chemically alter the gas bubble size. Experiments were conducted to study the absorption rate of CO2 at varying surfactant concentrations of 0, 0.12, 0.24, 0.36 and 0.48 g/L. Results showed that as the concentration of surfactant increased in solution, the absorption rate also increased. The CO2 absorption rate increased from 3.45 mmol/min CO2 at 0 g/L PPGME to 3.92 mmol/min CO2 at 0.48 g/L PPGME. This amounted to a 14% increase in the CO2 absorption rate with no decrease in absorption capacity of the solution.

These connections include considerations for both elevated and tunnel alternatives in West Seattle and Ballard, as well as a new tunnel and six underground stations in the densely developed downtown Seattle. This paper describes the conditions and constraints along the corridor, and the latest development in the ongoing process to plan the underground guideways and stations.

INTRODUCTION A population of several thousand uranium miners in the Colorado Plateau region of the United States has been under surveillance since 1957 using sputum cytology and other procedures. Attempts were made to collect sputum samples annually for those miners showing normal sputum or only minor abnormalities, and on a semi-annual schedule for miners having more severe cytological abnormalities. For individuals having carcinoma in situ or malignant cells in their sputum, samples were taken more frequently. As in any human population, however, these schedules were not always adhered to, and samples were often acquired less often than scheduled. On the basis of the thousands of sputum readings that have resulted from this surveillance, one can calculate the durations or sojourn times which individuals spend in the various cytologic states into which the sputum readings are classified. This paper presents some preliminary, descriptive results concerning relationships among the cytologic state duration distributions in this population, and their associations with other variables such as radiation exposure and cigarette smoking. There are several reasons for studying cytology results in this observational setting. Of considerable interest is the opportunity to gain insight into the preclinical natural history of lung cancer. Such information would be valuable in the future design and interpretation of screening programs for the early detection and treatment of lung cancer, should this activity prove to be of benefit in experimental trials. Secondly, it is of interest to determine if some characteristic of sputum cytology readings can be utilized to determine a decision point at which to transfer a uranium miner to another job category within the industry in order to effectively reduce his probability of developing lung cancer. For example, a reading of moderately atypical cells in the sputum has been suggested as a possible decision event which would be sufficient to warrant such a transfer. In the analysis which follows, an attempt will be made to develop information relevant to these issues. The data base for our analysis, largely developed over a period of more than 20 years by Drs. Geno Saccomanno and Victor Archer, contains sputum readings classified into one of eight cytologic states: normal, metaplasia, mild atypia, moderate atypia, marked atypia, suggestive, suggestive-equivocal, and malignant. The two suggestive states will not be considered as these categories seldom contain enough observations to generate meaningful results. The duration in a given cytologic state for a given individual is calculated as the sum of the intervals between consecutive sputum readings in that state. When two consecutive readings are in two different states, half the between-readings interval is assigned to each of the two states. Among all individuals in the data base, only those having at least two sputum readings are used so that a duration can be calculated. Furthermore, the analysis is limited to individuals whose successive readings are no more than 24 months apart, so as to focus on a population which was under surveillance on a reasonably regular basis. RESULTS The overall distributions for the cytologic states are displayed as histograms in Figures 1-3.
