There are bound to be changes with age, so I should not have been surprised or disappointed when what I had considered as high ad- ventures were much fewer and more widely scattered in the last 20 years of my long and active business life. But such adventures came until I was past 80 years of age and no one could expect more than this. Frequent visits to mines in this country and Canada and directorships in Bralorne and its subsidiaries, Homestake Mining Co., Bradley Mining Co., and the Bunker Hill Co.; and Copper Range Co. and its great new White Pine mine in Michigan, lasted far beyond the usual retirement age. The least happy part of my last two decades of active life was the death or sickness of many of my old friends. Hubert d'Autremont, whose friendship no one could replace, died suddenly in 1946. Henry Carlisle and Temple Bridgeman, for many years office associates, had heart attacks that cut down their activities far too soon. Many other less intimate friends died or became ill, but I knew that with advancing years such losses were inevitable. These memoirs would be endless if they covered all of the unusual work and associations I found in the last 20 years. So I must confine the rest of my recollections to expeditions that would have thrilled any engineer at any time. The topic of this paper is to demonstrate the development of mobile crushing installations from throughput capacities of 200 tons per hour, to mobile and semi-mobile large- scale crushing installations with throughput capacities of 3,500 up to 10,000 tons per hour. Basis are approximately 140 mobile and semi-mobile crushing installations which have been built since 1956 or were on order in 1987. [FIGURE 1. Total Number of Mobile or Semi-mobile Crushing Plants] Sixteen of these approximate 140 mobile and semi-mobile crushing installations have a throughput higher than 3,500 metric tons per hour. Mobile crushers were developed more than 25 years ago in Europe for the quarry industry, which had special requirements - fairly low capacity, mostly softer and less abrasive material (limestone) and full mobility. So the majority of the units up to about 1980 were fully mobile, having a fairly small capacity and utilizing mainly hammermills, double roll and impact crushers. It was only when the mining industry and large quarries picked up the concept in the early 1980's that a drastic increase in capacity took place. Even though the first mobile crusher in a true mining application went into service in 1971, it took another 10 years before it proceeded in a larger scale. This trend was obviously supported by the drastic fuel price and energy cost increase in the mid 70's. Since the cost of conveying material is substantially cheaper than trucking it, the increase in energy cost, combined with increasing haulage distances provided a strong incentive. Figure 1 shows clearly the throughput distribution of all crushing installations and it also shows the sharp increase in the throughput capacities within the last few years.

Self-supporting, open stoping underground mining methods are some of the earliest, starting with the prehistoric flint mines of Europe and the Egyptian gold mines of Nubia in the time of the pharaohs. When the early miner created an opening, it had to be inherently stable and self-supporting to enable him to continue. Therefore, as mining progressed beyond simple gophering, self-supported open stoping methods were devised to meet the needs of individual ore bodies. Timber for support appears in mines as early as 1000 BC, but this was for no more than local ground control. The ingenuity of mining engineers through history has so refined open stoping methods that today they produce more tonnage than any other mining system. Self-supported open stoping finds its application in moderate to strong rocks that exhibit little jointing or fiagmentation. Good back, hanging wall, and footwall conditions that require no more than incidental support are an essential part of these mining methods. Open stoping methods find applications in all inclinations of ore body from flat to vertical, and where ore movement may be either mechanical or under the influence of gravity. Table 18.0.1 demonstrates the range of ore bodies suitable for open stoping, with particular reference to their dip and the deposit thickness. Most of the flat-dipping applications use ore pillars for overall support and ground control that may be recovered under some conditions after completion of normal stoping practices. In steeper ore bodies, rib, crown, and sill pillars used to block out the ore may be recovered subsequent to the completion of stoping. Open stopes are frequently filled to facilitate pillar recovery. Two of the methods, vertical crater retreat (VCR) and shrinkage stoping, utilize fragmented ore for temporary support in the stopes. In these two cases, the stope is not strictly open until after drawdown.

Plants obtain nutrients from both air and soil. They absorb carbon dioxide mainly from the air, although some carbon dioxide may be dissolved in soil water which is absorbed by plant roots. Carbon dioxide, a gaseous form of carbon and oxygen, supplies the carbon which usually makes up 50% or more of plant structure. Growing plants use water more than any other biological substance. Plant nutrients dissolve in soil water and enter the plant via root absorption. Water is then given off into the air as the plant breathes or transpires. Water also supplies hydrogen and oxygen to plants. Plant roots absorb nutrient cations or anions by contact exchange with soil clay particles. Inorganic or mineral nutrients essential to plants are supplied through the soil. Inorganic or mineral composition of plants usually is less than 5% of their weight. In most crop-growing areas, much of this nutrition is inadequately supplied from soil reserves and must be provided by fertilizers. The role of the fertilizer industry is to provide economical, efficient, good quality fertilizers to improve or maintain soil productivity for optimum crop production. The essential plant nutrients other than carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen which often must be added to soils or plants are categorized as primary nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium), secondary nutrients (calcium, magnesium, and sulfur), and micronutrients (boron, chlorine, copper iron, manganese, molybdenum, and zinc). These classifications are based on quantity of nutrients utilized by plants and do not imply their function or degree of necessity. One point of major significance to the fertilizer industry is that not all fertilizer minerals contain the plant nutrients in a chemical form available to the plant. A product which may be considered a fertilizer mineral may require substantial processing or treatment before it becomes useful as a nutrient source or fertilizer.

What happens when the skull and crossbones goes on a product? In the case of cancer warnings, the consequences can be severe. If the label contains the term "lung carcinogen", you might expect to compensate a lot of smokers, meet a lot of expensive lawyers, be counseled by equally expensive consultants and pay sharply elevated insurance premiums, if you are able to obtain coverage at all. At the extreme, you may face plant shutdowns, job losses or even Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Regardless of how you fare, you are likely to learn some very disconcerting things about the risk evaluation and regulatory system which required you to label in the first place. If a particular material or product does pose a health risk, you are obliged both legally and morally to warn those potentially exposed. Once that warning appears on the label, however, the consequences are often beyond your control. You and your embattled product become part of a legal/regulatory system which has a life of its own. Therefore, the issue of health labeling is not so much whether one warns but rather whether the warning itself is justified and the reasonableness of what happens afterwards. It is this matter of justification and reasonableness, particularly of cancer warnings, which this paper addresses. Until, as they say, your ox has been gored, we tend to believe that risk is determined by the best available technology and expertise We expect that risk evaluators appreciate the ramifications of their work and place things in proper perspective; that risk has been appropriately demonstrated before it is publicized and regulated; that the time-honored concept of prudence, to err on the side of safety, has not been excessively stretched. Four numerical models written with the "PFC2D " program were compared against four similar physical models. The numerical models were constrained numerically to closely follow the caving behavior of the physical models. Results from the numerical analyses closely simulated both the granular and blocky behaviors of the physical models, including bridging and interlocking of the simulated orebody during draw. The drawdown patterns and the rate of draw developed during numerical modeling also closely simulated the physical models. The same assumptions and governing parameters used in analyzing the first four models were applied to an additional model. The fifth model employed a completely different, uneven, draw sequence than the other four models, allowing the material to flow in a more granular manner with a demonstrated instability of the undercut sections between each drawpoint opening. Drawdown patterns and behavior of the numerical material of the first four models progressed at uneven and inconsistent rates, similar to those seen in the physical models. By inspection, the overall shape and flow lines of both the numerical and physical models were close in the area removed and in the flow characteristics. The fifth model proved to be the most unstable of all the models tested, with poor correlation to the physical models. The uneven draw sequence, coupled with an additional frictionless wall condition and an added drawpoint, caused the material to flow in a very granular manner. Information generated by this study can be used as a first approach in determining the proper draw rate, drawpoint spacing and undercut thickness for a block-caving operation. Numerical models are often difficult to predict and interpret. However, this study should increase the confidence level for use of the PFC2D program in the future.

Derivatised 2,4-diketopyrimidine groups have been anchored to planar gold surfaces as self¬-assembled monolayers (SAMs) for chemical and photochemical studies. Three derivatives, 5-methyluracil (thymine), 5-trifluoromethyluracil and 5-nitrouracil, were chosen for the specific moiety present at position C-5, which can exert strong or weak inductive effects on the adjacent aromatic ring. The measured acidity constants decrease from 5-methyluracil to 5-nitrouracil as the inductive properties of the group at C-5 position increase. When grafted to the surface the acidity constants increase, albeit still adhering to the expected inductive trend. The functionality also exerts an influence on the surface wetting properties. Surface wettabilities indicate that the orientation of the pyrimidine groups at the surface occurs so that the C-5 position has a direct effect upon the surface chemistry. Upon dimerisation the surface contact angles increase signifi¬cantly. At pH 11 the contact angle changes reflect that the dimer has a higher pKa than the monomer. The monomer surface is deprotonated at this pH while the dimer surface is partially deprotonated, leading to changes in contact angle of up to 22 degrees. Large changes in contact angle were observed for 5-nitrouracil which were independent of surface charge and were appar¬ently due to conformational changes alone. Electrowetting of three fluoropolymer surfaces by electrolyte solutions was studied with the sessile drop method. The electrowetting curve (contact angle/potential) is analogous to the elec¬trocapillary curve (surface tension/potential) and may be described by a combination of the Young and Lippmann equations. We demonstrate that for some specific surfaces a systematic deviation occurs at positive potentials. This departure is attributed to double layer effects, namely the adsorption of hydroxide and halide anions. pH, ionic strength and polymer composi¬tion can all influence electrowetting behaviour.

In May 1998, Hanson Aggregates Midwest, as an outcome of mine planning, offered a 10-acre tract of land containing the famed fossil-bearing Silica formation, to the City of Sylvania, OH. in the form of a 99-year lease agreement. The Olander Park System, and Ohio code park operating within Sylvania Township, was then approved by Hanson and the City to manage and fund the park. All parties signed the lease in August of 1999. In November 2001, local residents voted to fund the park by a margin of 2 to 1. The park will consist of a shallow (approx. 20 ft.) former cement production quarry that is 700 ft. long by 300 ft. wide. Hanson’s motivation and vision for the park was fivefold: 1) the site was located away from long-term reserve access; 2) it would serve nicely as buffer property for the active quarry; 3) it had become an area of illegal dumping by locals in the past; 4) trespassing and safety issues would be limited by allowing supervised usage; and 5) the shallow outcropping contains the world famous, fossil-bearing Silica shale. Hanson will supply shale to the park perpetually via stripping activities in the process of uncovering quality construction aggregate limestone and dolomite reserves. Thousands of enthusiastic fossil hunters have already combed throughout the shale in their quest for “treasures”. The park’s master plan also features nature trails, picnic areas, a fossil-themed play area, amphitheater, visitor’s center and gift shop. Given the natural and people resources that Sylvania Fossil Park will have to offer, Hanson is confident that it will become the premier invertebrate fossil hunting site in the United States. It will also remain a solid community relations vehicle for years to come.

At the 1976 Annual Meeting of AIDE, Alan Merson reminded his audience that economic' success comes to those who understand things as they are, rather than as they have been or what ideology says they should be (1). He went on to say that, measured by this standard, the mining industry is in trouble. The mining firms had recognized long ago the importance of effective lobbying in Washington and the state capitals. But, he pointed out, those methods are nearly worthless anymore in coping with many land use problems because the critical decisions are likely to be made at the local level. There the tactics are far different as are the relations of the decisionmakers to the parties before then. Furthermore, in his estimation the trend is to leave land use regulation largely to the local level of government. All who are concerned for access to land for mineral development will be benefited by reading Professor Merson's paper lie is speaking effectively about the context of decisionmaking for specific cases, the shape of things in the here and now. There is, however, a longer-tern set of considerations that if pursued will be likely to foster the creation of public support for mining developments. At that sane meeting I spoke on two foundations of the long-term relationships: namely, the growth in requirements for minerals implied by projections of increasing consumption; and a rationale for fostering mineral exploration and development. I mentioned in passing the social decisionmaking process for public uses of land (2). This paper is intended as a complement. The growth of requirements for Minerals and the rationale for development based on the Entropy Law will be only mentioned. The main concern will be on the process of social decisionmaking in the context of access to land for mineral development.

Introduction The English word "sedimentation" is derived from the Latin verb "sedere" meaning to sink down. As a mineral processing unit operation, sedimenta¬tion has been defined as the separation of a suspension into a supernatant clear fluid and rather dense slurry containing a higher concentration of solid (Brown, G.G. 1960). Sedimen¬tation has been historically subdivided into thickening, which has the primary purpose of increasing the solids content of one of the thickener prod¬ucts relative to the feed stream, and clarification, which has the primary purpose of removing solids from the feed stream to produce a product essentially free from particu¬late matter. There is no absolutely precise distinction between these subdivisions and in certain applica¬tions, both objectives can be accom¬plished. Major Design Factors The capacity of conventional metal¬lurgical sedimentation devices is a function of slurry throughput and its attendant settling rate. Important factors, recognized by early investigators (Taggart, 1972), which influence the settling rate of a given metallur¬gical slurry include: Feed dilution or solids-liquid weight ratio Size and shape of the particulate solids Specific gravity differential between the solids and liquid phases Presence of electrolytes and/or flocculants Pulp viscosity Slurry temperature In addition to the foregoing histor¬ical factors, recent investigators have noted (Pearse, M.J., 1977) that other parameters which may have an influence upon settling rate and, thereby, thickener performance include: Method of flocculant application Particle size distribution Particulate wetting characteristics Feeding arrangements Rake speed and type Existence of convection currents Wind disturbance Evaporation All of the above factors should be examined and the effect upon thick¬ener performance brought about by manipulating the factor over the expected operating range should be determined if performance optimization is desired.

Abstract - This paper examines the ventilation network problem from a view point of solving a system of B equations in B unknowns, where B is the number o f branches in the network. Based on Kirchhoff s current and voltage laws, the solution to the general ventilation network problem must satisfy B network equations. In this paper, the air quantities and control-device pressures are chosen as variables and are grouped into B dependent variables (unknowns) and B independent variables, resulting in a system of B equations in B unknowns. Based on whether their variables are dependent or independent, the network branches are classified into f our types: five d, non-fixed, p-fixed, and q fixed. The ventilation network problem may include all four types of branches. There are .some conditions under which the problem as defined in this manner does not have a unique solution. To have a unique solution, the Jocabian matrix of the equations m us! he nonsingular. It then follows that: • the number of branches with independent air quantities must be less than or equal to the number of chords with respect to a spanning tree; •the subnetwork of branches with independent air quantities must not contain any cutset; and •the suhnetwork of branches with dependent control-device pressures must not contain any cutset. These three conditions must be met regardless of the values for the variables. In addition to the problem formulation, a solution procedure applying the Newton (or Newton-Raphson) method is outlined and illustrated with an example problem.

In 1991, LTV Steel Mining decided to close an open-pit taconite mine in northeastern Minnesota using a passive-treatment approach consisting of limiting infiltration into the stockpiles and wetland treatment to remove metals. More than 50 Aft (55 million st) of sulfide-containing waste had been stockpiled adjacent to the mine during its 30 years of operation. Drainage from the stockpiles contained elevated levels of copper, nickel, cobalt and zinc. Nickel is the major trace metal in the drainages. Before the closure, the annual median concentrations ranged from 1.5 to 50 mg/L. Copper, cobalt and zinc are also present but they are generally less than 5% of the nickel values. Median pH levels range from 5 to 7.5, but most of the stockpile drainages have pH levels greater than 6.5. Based on the chemical composition of each stockpile, a cover material was selected. The higher the potential that a stockpile had to produce acid drainage, the lower the permeability of the capping material required Covers ranged from overburden soil removed at the mine to a flexible plastic liner. Predictions of the reduction in infiltration ranged from 40% for the native soil to more than 90% for the plastic liner. Five constructed wetlands have been installed since 1992. They have removed 60% to 90% of the nickel in the drainages. Total capital costs for all the infiltration reduction and wetlands exceeded $6.5 million, but maintenance costs are less than 1 % of those for an active treatment plant. Because mine-drainage problems can continue for more than 100 years, the lower annual operating costs should pay for the construction of the wetland-treatment systems within seven years.

THE ROLE OF MANAGEMENT IN PLANT SAFETY Safe Production In plant management, safe production is an ideal. It becomes reality when: 1. Plant employees work in healthful and safe conditions. 2. Plant safety is in harmony with productivity. 3. Worker absenteeism and turnover are low-the work force is stable. Plant management must apply its talents, skills, and resources to build and maintain the foundations of safe production on a system of policies, procedures, and attitudes. It must do so by marshaling all managerial functions - staffing, direction, control, innovation, and representation-toward that goal. Ideally, a plant safety program is proactive. Management should plan and implement safety activities that are aimed at prevention. Past accidents-accomplished facts-should not be the sole guide of future actions. In other words, positive preventive measures, not the fewness of accidents are the criteria for safety production. An ideal safety program is one which is cost effective. Management should view plant safety as part of a broader program-loss control. Loss control includes prevention of fires and other accidents, unhealthful conditions, and occurrences that cause bodily injury, illness, property loss, or damage. Management evaluates the employees' productivity and safety. An effective training program aimed at loss control is the hallmark of safe production. Ideally, both labor and management should be well versed in safety. They believe in the premise that work-related injury and illness, as well as property loss and damage from fire and other accidents, are manageable and preventable. Such belief prompts them to learn more about the work process and potential hazards associated with each job. They also learn how to expect and prevent fues and other accidents, and respond to emergencies at the plant. Steady-state flowsheet simulators for mineral processing plants have evolved to a current high level of utility and accuracy. Reliable, general-purpose, semi-empirical models now exist in nearly all unit operations categories particularly in the areas of comminution and classification. .These models, installed as user-selectable functions within the integrated frame- work of flowsheet balance-solver software systems, can be strung together to represent any plant configuration. In addition, CAD-like graphics, data reconciliation and model parameterization functions have become standard features of the current generation of integrated plant simulators. These advances have given engineers the capability to investigate many different plant scenarios while requiring a minimum of actual plant testwork. This paper describes a methodology and an integrated software package which are being successfully applied in a number of operating plants worldwide to predict plant performance under changing conditions. Those conditions which can be changed include effect-of ore type, feed size, water addition rates, equipment geometries and flowsheet modifications. By using data from actual plant optimization exercises in real mills, the paper illustrates and out- lines a technique which includes plant data collection, ore breakage testing, flowsheet simulation, model-fitting (parameterization), data adjustment and model experimentation. Brief descriptions of some unit operations models, such as autogenous mills and cyclones, are provided as examples of the current state of such models. Ore breakage testing and its relation to certain models is also discussed. Computer- generated size-distribution graphs, along with tabular data generated by the simulator, round out the presentation and serve to demonstrate the real- ism and accuracy of the models. The paper concludes with a partial list of cases where this technology has been successfully applied.

This paper describes the serious injuries that have occurred to bulldozer operators working at domestic coal, metal and nonmetal mines in the United States. A serious injury is defined as one that results in either a fatality or in lost work time. Examined were 873 injury records compiled by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). The time period covered was 1988 through 1997. These injuries resulted in 18 fatalities and 31,866 lost work days. All of these injuries occurred to dozer operators while they were performing common production tasks. An injury classification system was developed to code the narrative information that describes the circumstances surrounding the injuries. Jolts and jars accounted, for 604 or 70% of the serious injuries to bulldozer operators, and jolts and jars accounted for 75% of the workdays lost. Vertical jars comprised the largest set (354 incidents) of jolting and jarring injuries. In more than half of these incidents, the operator was backing up the dozer. Working near an edge carries significant risk for fatal injuries. Of 116 incidents where the dozer fell over an edge, rolled over or fell into a hidden void, 14 (12%) resulted in fatal injuries. In cases where the dozer operator either jumped or was thrown out of the cab in a fallover or rollover, seven out of 17 of the operators were killed. This study finds that further reductions in injury risk would require more widespread use of seat belts; consideration (and maintenance) of the seat and seat suspension systems that might reduce injury risk from jolts and jars; research interventions to assess the effect of alternative engineering designs to dampen or isolate the effects of shock and vibration; and continued attention to skilled performance, i.e., the integration of hazard awareness, recognition and response with dozer operational skills.

Since its passage, the Mining Law of 1872 has been modified several times to meet the changing needs of America's society and economy. Despite the fact that it continues to provide an effective framework for a robust US exploration and mining industry, the mining law continues to be criticized in some quarters as outdated. Pressure to reform the Mining Law of 1872 has reached new levels in recent years. Many proposals for reform of the law have been introduced during the 1990s. None, though, have been enacted. The issue will not likely disappear and is certain to be raised during the 105th Congress. To provide a better understanding of the status of current congressional reform proposals, this article presents an overview of the major moments in the history of mining laws in the western United States - from the days before the 1872 mining law and the days following its promulgation, to the current dilemma over mining law reform. The future of the mining law is assessed as are the interests at stake for the modern mining industry. Mining before 1872 No discussion of the Mining Law of 1872 is complete without some historical background to provide an understanding of the origins of this unique law. There was plenty of mining activity on the public lands before the mining law was enacted. At first, the federal government's policy was to allow all miners to work freely on the public lands and to resolve disputes among themselves. In this "hands off" environment, miners operated according to laws they promulgated. These were based on previous experiences in Europe and Mexico. In order to monitor/control airflow rate distribution in a complicated ventilation network installed many regulators, an integrated system composed of expert system, exerting programs for simulation to get macroscopic characteristics and drawing diagram, monitoring system and so on is introduced in this study. This system is made up of airflow velocity sensors and computers linked to an local area network. The main results of this study are as follows; 1) Combinations of two branches to monitor aerodynamic resistance change in a branch p in a network can be selected by comparing factor's value in a branch relation table. 2) When the combination of sensor branches for a branch p does not exist in the network at present condition, the system changes aero- dynamic resistances of appropriate branch q placed a regulator by referring branch relation table. And then the system asks other computer to get macroscopic characteristics under altered value of aerodynamic resistance of the branch q. 3) Dot pattern diagram shows airflow rate relation between an active branch and a passive branch. Three relations such as a) a straight line, b) a monotonous curve and c) extremums are displayed in different patterns for all the sets between an active branch and a passive branch at a time. 4) The ranges of airflow rate in coal faces by changing aerodynamic resistance of any one branch placed a regulator are shown in the Pareto diagram using values in the branch relation table. 5) Ventilation transfer diagram with two parameter, one shows airflow rate in a coal face and the other shows energy provided by main fans to overcome aerodynamic resistance in a net- work, is utilized to decide countermeasures for decreasing energy consumption in the network on increasing of airflow rate in the specified branch.

They also comply with environmental management, which is, a method of organizing and implementing environmental protection measures. The paper includes by special reference on two important modern transport infrastructure projects for the development of Greece and its communication with Europe and the Balkans. Their landscape types and natural vegetation, local climate, geological conditions, altitudes, aspects and soil types vary As a result, upland landscapes in particular, are endangered. Due to the complex of nature of this environment, the development and the landscape design of the projects is a high challenging task. Wherever the nature of the projects requires intervention to the environment, they intend to follow the direct restoration of landscape and method for ecological balance. The implementation of landscape design of infrastructure projects, aims at restoring the landscape affected by construction works, incorporating transport works into the landscape, emphasizing on areas of particular interest (e.g. archaeological sites), while at the same time observing the principles of an efficient operation and safe use of the alignment. Landscape design provides, among others for the protection of slopes against surface erosion and the reinforcement of their stability, the improvement of road functionality, the aesthetic improvement of the landscape, adaptation of the road landscape to the greater environment, visual guidance of the user, screening of lights of the vehicles moving in the opposite direction, the protection against wind etc. The landscape design strategy and landscape applications are specified by special landscape guidelines and specifications that can be considered as part of the sustainable development of a alignment creating a high a esthetic scenery, ensuring the security of transportation and the environmental protection.

About 100 mine-waste dumps from past metal exploration and mining in Colorado and Montana were sampled using surficial-sampling methods for laboratory studies of the minus-2-mm fraction. In the laboratory, the composite samples were split into l00g samples that were leached to assess their acid-generation potential and associated release of potentially toxic metals that may degrade water quality in the headwaters of the Animas River watershed in Colorado and the Boulder River watershed in Montana. Two leach methods were studied: a passive leach using de-ionized water, and a more aggressive leach following the EPA-1312 method. The resulting pH values of the leachates using both methods are comparable. The concentrations of sulfate and several, but not all, dissolved or water-soluble metals are higher in the EPA-1312 leachates than in the passive leachates; however, the overall trends of the data are very similar. The passive leach method is less labor intensive and may be more representative of the natural weathering process occurring on the mine-waste dumps, simulating the natural precipitation and snowmelt. Three chemical characteristics of mine wastes studied here provide a relative ranking of mine-waste dumps for the purpose of determining priority for removal or remediation. These characteristics are: net acid production (NAP), sum of dissolved toxic metals (?As+Cd+Cu+Pb+Zn), and dissolved iron in leachates. Ranking can be done evaluating plots of NAP versus the sum of dissolved toxic metals, and NAP versus dissolved iron. These two plots serve as a basis for relative ranking of polymetallic-vein and acid-sulfate mine wastes studied. This ranking scheme may apply to mine wastes from production of other deposit types in other watersheds.

The human requirements have increased rapidly depending on population density and urbanization thus industrialization has grown steadily. As a result of the situation, the greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere and the global warming have increased slowly. Today this effect has continued to increase. Therefore, the effects of greenhouse gases in all areas of production must be controlled. The study presents the methods of determination the CO2 emissions (CO2-e) and energy consumption in aggregate production. The aggregate constitute approximately 70% by volume of concrete that has widespread use as construction material in the world. One of the most important elements in today's terms is sustainable use of resources and minimum CO2 emissions (CO2 + CO + NOx + CH4.vb.) at every stage of production of aggregate. Therefore, these elements must be taken into consideration in the aggregate production standards. The choice of production method of aggregate is very important for optimum use of energy and effects of greenhouse gas emissions. So the properties of the aggregate material must be known well to obtain the target. Within the scope of this study, the unit value of CO2-e that release when the production of aggregate in different formations is determined for our country. Thus, the effects of green house gas emission can be evaluated according to the characteristics of material in aggregate production planning. In this study, energies consumed during the production of aggregates at a quarry in Istanbul Cendere region were investigated by taking the different formations encountered at the quarry into consideration. The unit CO2 emission values per ton of produced aggregates were calculated as a result of this investigation. Besides, energy consumption values of previous months at this quarry were taken and the unit CO2 emission values were also calculated.
