The DeLamar Silver Mine is a Joint Venture between Earth Resources Company, the Canadian Superior Mining Company and the Superior Oil Company. The property is a consolidation of several old operations in the district. The more widely known are the DeLamar and Sommercamp Mines. The location is 20 miles northeast of Jordan Valley, Oregon and 55 miles southwest of Boise, Idaho. The mine is on the south slope of DeLamar Mountain in the Owyhee Mountains of southwest Idaho Initial interest started in 1969 with serious exploration beginning in 1970. The feasibility study was completed in 1974, and in 1975 Mountain States Engineers were retained to design and build the plant. Processing of ore began in March of 1977 with the first bullion poured in April of that year. The plant is currently processing some 2200 TPD of ore with a grade of four ounces of silver and 0.03 oz. of gold per ton of ore. Cyanide consumption is 2.5 lb/ton, zinc consumption of 0.3 lb/ton and flocculent consumption of 0.5 lb/ton. A flowsheet is shown as Figure I. The grinding circuit is of two stage design. The primary mill is an 18 ft. dia. by 9 ft. long semi-autogenous unit. The secondary mill is a 9 1/2 ft. dia. by 15 ft. long overflow ball mill. The mill discharges are combined and sent to 15 in. cyclones for classification. Cyclone overflow reports to leaching with the underflows reporting to the ball mill. The cyclone feed pump is an 8X6 metal case pump. The primary mill has 1000 installed horsepower and rotates at 68% of critical speed. The ball mill has 700 installed horsepower and rotates at 72% of critical speed. Because the primary mill is horsepower limited the ball charge is varied to maintain the desired throughput. The mill power is held at 980-990 HP by modifying the feed rate. Four inch forged steel balls are added any time the ore feed fails to reach 100 tons per hour for four hours. During periods of extremely hard ore, the ball charge has been as high as 14 v/o and at other times the mill has operated fully autogenous for weeks.

In 1974, the need to utilize coal resources that could not be mined was recognized, and Congress gave the Bureau of Mines $1.7 million to gain a better understanding of the UCC technology and its potential applications. Since 1977 when the U.S. Dept. of Energy (DOE) was formed, workable technologies have been tested, the market for underground coal conversion has been recognized, and extensive industrial interest has developed. Perspective The U.S. is blessed with extensive coal resources. Coal supplies about 19% of our national energy needs, yet recently promulgated environmental standards and increasing mining costs have limited direct coal use. UCC potentially can use coal that is economically or technically infeasible to mine because the coal is too thick, deep, dirty, high-ash, and wet; has an excessive angle of dip; or has unpredictable and poor overburden characteristics that make mining unsafe. Coal can be gasified underground or perhaps liquefied below the earth’s surface. Underground coal gasification (UCG) is the prime element of the underground coal conversion program. It enables coal to be converted to gas underground. UCC Coal Resource Recent data show a total U.S. coal resource base of about 6.4 trillion tons. Of this, 1.8 trillion tons might be accessed by UCC, including some minable coal. A commercial UCC process could quadruple roughly the 450 billion tons of U.S. coal reserves, which presently are recoverable by mining. The U.S. coal resources are divided into five sectors. The two most eastern sectors contain relatively thin, swelling bituminous coals that are difficult to gasify. Of the two, the bituminous coal in the Eastern Province is the most difficult because it is deeper than , in the Interior Province and the terrain is more rugged. The sector along the Rocky Mountains contains huge amounts of thick low-rank coals that are the most promising for early development by UCC. The coal has good continuity and the terrain is suitable. As we are all aware, the impacts of the 1977 Surface Mining Act and the implementing OSM Regulations require application of new, as well as existing, equipment and technologies. Our firm recently completed (June, 1979) a study for the Department of Energy titled "Analysis of the Impact of Public Law 95-87 on Mining Performance." The objective of the study was to analyze the impact of the Act and its regulations on mining performance in order to provide recommendations to alleviate the impacts identified, including identification of research needs. This paper presents some of the highlights of that report: projected cost increases; additional equipment needed for compliance; review of methods currently practiced or those which can be modified; and will focus particulary on equipment and technology applications.

In open pit mining every effort is made to maintain as steep a pit slope as possible. Pi t slope angles are influenced by numerous factors some natural that are amenable to limited or no control at all and other mining technology related where a greater degree of influence can be exerted by the engineer. One such area where control is possible is the method of drilling and blasting in the pit. This paper discusses the influence of blasting techniques on the economics of pit slopes and demonstrates how balanced blasting can be used with advantage to pit wall control and improve fragmentation (thus reducing material handling costs). Microprocessor based instrumentation to monitor drill and blast performance has also been described.

In order to improve handling of subsidence damages the Illinois Mine Subsidence Insurance Fund supported the development of novel cost-effective methods of repair. The research in developing the repairs was directed towards the most common and costly damages that had been observed. As a result repair techniques were designed for structurally cracked foundations in the tension zone; structurally cracked foundations in the compression zone; and damaged or undamaged tilted foundations. When appropriate, the postulated methods would result in: 1. significant cost savings (over conventional procedures); 2. a structural capacity greater than when the foundation was untracked; and 3. an aesthetic appeal. All the postulated repair methodologies were laboratory and/or field tested. The paper will summarize the essentials of each technique developed and the test results.

Introduction Screening is defined as a mechanical process which separates particles on the basis of their size and their acceptance or rejection by a screening surface. The key element in this method of particle sizing is obviously the screening surface, the medium that contains the apertures for the passage of the undersize material. Combustion synthesis, or self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS), reaction systems are discussed with respect to thermodynamics and kinetics. In particular, the effect of the process parameters, e.g. particle size, [All] ignition and combustion temperatures, on these self-sustaining reactions is discussed. Combustion theory is used to investigate the effect of the overall actuation energy of the SHS reaction on the combustion front propagation rate and in obtaining a clearer understanding of the transition from stable to unstable propagation. Finally, examples of the application of combustion synthesis to advanced materials processes are made, in particular the synthesis of Ni-Ti-X intermetallic shape memory alloys, TiC-AI2O3 and ZrB2-AI203 ceramic composite materials.

The Paranapanema Group was created in February 1996 when a group formed by the Brazilian pension funds acquired four companies dealing with nonferrous metals. The new Paranapanema Group, basically related to the tin and construction business, became the sole Brazilian primary copper producer, the second zinc producer and one of the most important producers of copper products, mainly tubes and fittings. To put together such different companies, managed before by family groups and with different cultures and principles, was and still is a big challenge. The strategy of developing and consolidating it as an homogeneous group is based in three pillars: an increase in production, quality and technological improvements on products and market mix and a permanent cost reduction program, using all the potential synergies founded.

This chapter will summarize some of the important applications in the geotechnical (pit slope, spoil pile and tailings stability, and hydrology), the environmental (including reclamation), and equipment selection and analysis areas. Virtually all aspects discussed are applicable both for planning of new mines and for evaluating existing operations. Probably the most influential item which has affected the areas discussed in this chapter and possibly most areas discussed in this book is and will continue to be, in the next decade, the myriad federal and state environmental, safety, and reclamation regulations affecting new mine development and continued operation of existing properties. Computer applications have been and will continue to be instrumental in assisting in planning to meet the challenges of the requirements dictated by these regulations.

This work focused on identifying, examining and ranking the physical and environmental hazards at inactive and abandoned mine sites in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Earlier inventory projects in the Black Hills concentrated on federal lands, while more recent efforts have examined abandoned mines on state and private lands. The more recent efforts are a result of passage of legislation by the State of South Dakota requiring a comprehensive inventory. The inventory information provides criteria for identifying those sites that require further investigation or characterization of the physical safety or environmental hazards. For most AML sites in the Black Hills, location information is all that is typically needed, because the majority of sites pose little environmental or physical hazard.

Adequate ventilation is a main concern if Lockerby Mine near Sudbury is to be expended. This study investigate a two-fold problem: (1) the new pressure and volume requirements of the main fans due to the theoretical. deepening of the mine, and (2) the effect of the natural ventilation pressure on the main fans. Field data was analyzed with the aid of a newly developed network simulation program, VNETPC Version 3. 0. The density change throughout the mine is accounted for by performing all computations at reference density. Results of the investigation indicate that the existing fan system must be supported by three to five additional underground fans as well, the density effect is significant. If neglected, it will greatly alter the simulation results

This paper describes a procedure for solving the generalized system of n network equations in n unknowns considering the following ventilation variables and parameters: (a) air quantities, (b) pressure losses or gains caused by the control devices (i.e., fans or regulators), (c) resistance factors, (d) natural ventilation pressure, and (e) fan pressures (as a function of air quantities). The air quantities and pressure losses for all branches in the network are grouped into dependent and independent variables. The branches with an independent quantity are contained in a chord set, and the branches with a dependent pressure loss are contained in a chord set. In addition to the problem formulation, the solution procedure, applying the Newton method, is discussed and illustrated with a numerical example.

Theoretical and experimental lockedness profile curves are the same when the model assumptions are met. They appear different because of the way the data is presented. Continuous theoretical lockedness profile curves present all the data, including the wings of the curves giving them the deep U-shaped configuration. Experimental lockedness profile curves, because of the measurement methods, are discretized, obscuring the wings. If the continuous theoretical curves are discretized, they are similar to the experimental curves. When a float sink test is used to measure an interval of locked particles, the integrated averaging of the separation process obscures the wings of the continuous theoretical curve. To disclose the wings with experimental data, narrow density or measurement intervals must be used.

Japan has produced 14-16 million tons of coal per year in the past several years. About half of the production comes from eight coal mines in the Ishikari coal field, Hokkaido. Most of the gassy coal mines are in this field and the average mining depth of these coal mines has already attained about 700 m from the surface. Therefore, most of the coal mines have suffered from occurrences of coal and gas outbursts. To prevent outbursts and to reduce ventilation air, gas drainage has been carried out at all of these coal mines and these have had successful results. However, the methods of gas drainage differ from mine to mine. In this report, an outline of the main methods of gas drainage are described.

It appears that all extractive processes involve, at one or more points, fluids (gases or liquids) and that the flow of the fluid is an essential part of the functioning of the process. Usually that flow is turbulent and the turbulent flow frequently determines the rates of mass and heat transfer as well as other important phenomena such as bubble/droplet breakup and coalescence, particle suspension, etc. Over the past decade many attempts have been made to model turbulent flows in metallurgical unit operations. The present paper summarizes some of that work. Amongst the operations considered are agitated leaching, ladle metallurgy, electrowinning/refin- ing, induction furnaces, Hall cells and electro- magnetic casting. Where possible, comparisons are made between model predictions and experimental results.

The AirBoss*200 is a unique ambient airflow sensor with important improvements in accuracy, especially in the critical low end, 0-61 m/min (0-200 fpm) where MSHA regulations apply. All solid state, its design is rugged, and there are no moving parts or delicate filaments. An on-board microprocessor calculates air velocity, linearizes and corrects for temperature, while driving voltage and current loop analog outputs to .3 meters/minute (1 ft/min) resolution. Recent developments also cover both positive and negative flow directions. A hand held computer is available to readout data and to adjust stored range selection, alarm set points, calibration data and the speed of response. Installation in hazardous areas is covered by MSHA Classes G, H and L.

A study was undertaken to investigate the liberation behavior of coal macerals through size reduction and density separation. It was seen that the liberation of coal macerals could be achieved by size reduction, allowing selective separation of coal organic components. However, the degree of liberation was dependent upon the comminution history. Even for the same fineness, the extent of liberation might not be the same depending on how the material was generated. The liberation of coal macerals was analyzed by examining the liberation index. It was seen that, although comminution produced fine particles enriched in inertinite (primarily fusinite and semifusinite), these particles were less liberated than coarser particles. However, the liberation of macerals increased when all the feed was ground to a finer size.

Regenerative conveyors with complex conveyor profiles place unusually stringent demands on the starting drive control. Depending on the nature of the conveyor loading, the drive must either provide a positive driving force to overcome conveyor friction and gravitational forces if the belt is empty or the inclined sections are loaded, or it must provide a retarding force to resist the gravitational load of decline sections to control the acceleration rate. This paper discusses the requirements of regenerative conveyors, reviews the working principals of fluid couplings, and examines their interaction by means of a case study of a 1700 m long regenerative conveyor utilizing a fluid coupling with a proportional brake control to provide controlled starting and stopping under all load conditions.

Compressed air distribution networks are essential for powering equipment in many mines even though some mines are replacing them with electrical power for hydraulic drills. Compressed air can be costly especially if the system is poorly designed and maintained. This paper outlines a technique for proper compressed air system design that will help mine managers reduce compressed air power costs; an important topic in today's highly competitive international minerals market. Compressed air system design is complex. It requires specifying: 1) air quantity and pressure in all branches of a large network, 2) proper location and types of valves and fittings, 3) the network solution that determines compressor requirements, 4) optimal hose and pipe, diameters, 5) receiver and compressor accessories, and 6) required capital and operating costs.
