Laboratory testing for flotation circuit design is carried out on a routine basis in a large number of lab- oratories throughout the world. Usually a sample of ore, assumed to be characteristic of the material to be processed in a future plant, having a mass of the order of a few kilograms, is ground in a batch ball or rod mill, in the presence of water and some re- agents (for pH control, etc. .. ); after dilution to the adequate solid concentration, the resulting slurry is transferred into a laboratory batch flotation machine, having a volume which can vary from 0.5 to 8 10 -3m3. Various types of machines are in common use, manufactured by the same companies that market industrial size flotation machines. The operation of flotation in the laboratory is carried out by an experienced technician, who uses parameters such as impeller rotation speed, air flowrate addition, froth height, froth removal rate, in conjonction with reagent addition sequence, to "test" the ore. After flotation, the froth products ("concentrates"), and the solids remaining in the cell are filtered, dried, and analyzed for the various elements of interest. For flotation circuit design, a kinetic test is usually carried out, in which the froth products obtained at various times are collected to assess the time response of the ore in the laboratory machine with the combination of reagents used. Although this description is rather sketchy, it enables to outline some of the major difficulties in using laboratory data for flotation circuit design: 1. ore sample representatively 2. feed preparation procedure (laboratory compared to industrial scale) 3. laboratory procedures (type of ma- chine, type of operation, experimental errors. . . ) 4. flotation machine scale-up 5. flotation kinetic scale-up 6. flotation circuit design using laboratory data These various points will be discussed in the present paper, in order to stress the problem areas as well as possible solutions. The modem open pit-heap leach operation by Pegasus Gold Ltd. at Zortman and Landusky in Phillips County, Montana, is a new chapter in the mining of gold in these districts. The discovery of bulk tonnage ore bodies and their development and ultimate production was based on a long history of mining and exploration in that part of Montana. Gold was originally discovered in the Little Rocky Mountains as placer deposits by Pike Landusky and Lou Myers. This discovery in the 1880s was not significant, but Pike Landusky continued prospecting for lode deposits, and he eventually located the Gold Bug and Little Ben, two of the larger Au-Ag producers in the district. Eventually two camps, Landusky and Zortman, grew in the LittleRocky Mountains. By the time Landusky was killed in 1894 by Kid Curry, the district was still a discontinuous small producer. Steady production commenced in 1907 with the organization of the August Gold Mining Co. Eventually high grade ores on specific veins were exhausted by selective underground mining and the district was idle by May 1942. After World War II in the early 1950s. E.A. Scholz tried to continue selective underground mining, but he realized the stockworks surrounding the larger veins constituted bulk tonnage targets. Ultimately in the 1976- 1979 period he organized two exploration efforts, one each for the Landusky and Zortman areas, and brought these into production as the Argo and Pegasus gold mines. By the time of his death, Apr. 8, 1980, both operations were producing gold. Later the two companies were merged as Pegasus Gold Ltd. Upon the death of Scholz, V.F. Hollister continued as the geological consultant, Ed Roper was engaged as general manager, and J. J. Crowhurst was given the responsibility of executive vice president. The discovery of open pittable ores and the application of heap leach technology was important in the development of mining. Both contributed to the low cost operation that continues to this day. The attached article by L.M. Rogers, then chief geologist, and M.S. Enders, his assistant, describes the geology of the deposit. It was presented at the Northwest Mining Association meeting in 1982.

Noise control is an important consideration in the design and operation of coal preparation plants. It is essential to understand and control noise sources to provide a safe environment for operating personnel. The average noise exposure levels in a typical coal preparation plant generally range between 95 and 100 db. An operator should not be exposed to noise levels of this magnitude for more than 4 and 2 hr, respectively, according to MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) regulations. The major noise sources in a coal preparation plant include noise from impacting the inside surfaces of steel chutes, vibrating screens, coal crushers, pumps, motors, fans, and blowers. The magnitude of noise varies considerably from one situation to another. NOISE EXPOSURE IN COAL PREPARATION PLANTS Noise regulations established by the Occupational Safety and Health administration (OSHA) are accepted by MSHA relative to caal preparation plants. Fig. 14-43 shows a graph of the time of noise exposure in hours per day to which a worker can be exposed for each A-weighted sound level. According to this graph, a worker is permitted to spend 8 hr in a 90-db noise environment, but that time must be halved when the A-weighted sound level increases 5 db. The noise dosage a worker receives is determined by the ratio of the length of time the worker spends in a particular noise environment divided by the length of time he is permitted to spend in that environment. If the worker is exposed to several different sound levels, his total dosage would be the sum of each of the individual dosages. The equation for determining the dosage is: where C is the actual duration of exposure at a given steady state noise level and T is the noise exposure limit for the level present during the time C According to MSHA regulations, the dosage, D, should not exceed one (1) for any worker for a full day of work. As an example of typical plant noise levels, vibratory screens and crushers emanate noise levels in excess of 90 db at a distance of 3 ft (0.9 m) with no material flow. As part of an MSHA program to assess the effectiveness of dust control parameters for longwall mining operations, respirable dust studies were conducted on six longwall sections. The purpose of these studies was to evaluate the influence of airflow and production on longwall dust control. The sections were sampled for 3 to 35 shifts. In addition to dust, ventilation and production measurements, other dust control and operational parameters were measured. The water spray system at each operation conformed with generally recommended practices. Therefore, improvements to the dust control system would be most appropriately achieved through improvements to ventilation along the face. Two methods of assessing the influence of ventilation and production were used. For two of the six mines where extensive sampling (22 and 35 shifts) was conducted, multiple linear regressions were used to relate the dust concentration versus airflow and production data. For these two mines, statistically significant correlations existed between concentration and both production and airflow. The multiple regressions fit to the data indicated that for every 0.47 m3/s (1,000 cfm) increase in airflow, there would be approximately 0.04 to 0.07 mg/m3 reduction in dust concentration; and, for every 1,000 ton increase in production, there would be approximately 0.15 to 0.50 mg/m3 increase in dust concentration. For the four mines with limited data (3 to 10 shifts), as well as for the two mines with extensive sampling, an average ratio of airflow per ton of coal mined was calculated by proportioning the airflow to production and the designated occupation personal respirable dust exposure to a 2.0 mg/m3 concentration. The airflow-to-tons ratio required to maintain a 2.0 mg/m3 dust concentration ranged from 0.0038 0.0071 m3/s per ton (8 to 15 cfm/ton). Both of these data treatments were used to calculate airflow requirements based on normal production rates. For the two mines where both the regression and airflow-to-tons ratio were calculated, results from the two methods agreed within 25 percent.

Igneous rock exposures occupy only a minor portion of surface area (<18 mi2) in Arkansas, and are divided into two major groups: nepheline syenite (7 mi2) and syenite complexes (8 mi2), with various dikes and sills representing the remaining surface exposures. The syenite complexes have been the sites of major vanadium and minor titanium production during the past 50 years. Nepheline syenite exposures were important in the early production of locally used building stone; however, aggregate and roofing granules have now become the principal market for the production of nepheline syenite in Arkansas. Nepheline syenite intruded into a sequence of Paleozoic sedimentary rocks in Arkansas and is exposed in two areas: in Saline County near the town of Bauxite, and in Pulaski County at Granite Mountain, just southeast of Little Rock. Although the central Arkansas region had been investigated thoroughly for bauxite by the early 1950s, the nepheline syenite resources of the region have yet to be evaluated systematically by the state. Arkansas nepheline syenite was evaluated for its ceramic uses in 1952. Some recent industry interest has revolved around its potential use as a sand-blast abrasive. The largest exposed areas of nepheline syenite, located at Granite Mountain, currently are being mined by the Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing Company (3M) and McGeorge Contracting (Granite Mountain Quarry). 3M has been in operation since 1947 and mainly produces roofing granules. A fine powder produced by 3M during crushing that is marketed under the name Donnafill? recently has seen use as filler in self-compacting confined construction and as an additive (frit) in common brick. Since the early 1960s, Granite Mountain Quarries has produced a variety of aggregates, ranging from riprap to industrial sand, and recently constructed a computerized hot-mix-asphalt production facility. Approximately 4.5 million tons and 1.2 million tons of syenite were produced from Granite Mountain and 3M, respectively, during 1979. No production values are available after this date; however, combined production from both quarries is estimated to be at least 6 million tons annually.

Introduction There has been much publicity of the boom and bust in oil and gas well drilling in the US, and many comments on oil and gas gluts. Despite this, the drilling industry remains the largest consumer of functional industrial minerals. The boom years of 1981 and 1982, compared with the bust year of 1983, show a sharp reduction in the consumption of industrial minerals-1981, 7.4Mt (8.2 million st); 1982, 6.3 Mt (7 million st); and 1983, 4.4 Mt (4.9 million st). Industrial mineral use rebounded in 1984 to 4.7 Mt (5.2 million st). This was the second highest year in history in terms of wells drilled and third highest in footage drilled. Table 1 shows the history of drilling activity and mineral consumption from 1971 to 1984. The uses of functional industrial minerals in oil and gas well drilling were detailed by Miles and Blair (ME, 1983, October, pp. 1397-1400). As an update, this article addresses only the changes that have occurred in the industry in the past two-and-a-half years. It will be directed to mineral use and new products introduced to the industry. Drilling practices A partial explanation of where wells are being drilled with lower quantities of minerals consumed is: • In the boom year of 1981, there was a proliferation of number of suppliers chasing the same business. This resulted in multiple sourcing, multiple warehousing, and a huge increase in inventory that became surplus in the following years. The bust year, 1983, caused a severe shakeout in the number of suppliers of minerals and associated drilling fluids. • In 1981 and 1982, the wild speculation in the oil and gas industry led to drilling of speculative deep gas wells. Oil wells were drilled on a wildcat basis - in areas of unproven productivity. • Presently, the oil and gas well drilling industry is very active. But drilling is directed toward proven areas of production and working over old wells for increased production. This means a large number of wells are being drilled with lower average foot-

The Consejo de Recursos Naturales No Renovables of the Mexican government entered into an agreement with the United Nations in 1964 for the mineral exploration of a large area in Estado de Sonora, Mexico. The agreement called for a systematic exploration for copper in northern Sonora based on photogeologic mapping, aerial reconnaissance, and geochemical stream sediment sampling. The UN-CRNNR investigations resulted in the detection of anomalous copper values in sediment from the Arroyo Cruz de Cafiada. The anomaly was followed upstream to its source, which ultimately proved to be the La Caridad ore body (see Fig. 1). Soil copper and molybdenum values were found over a large area, and further detailed geologic and geophysical investigations were instituted of the anomalous area. David Coolbaugh was largely responsible for the follow-up work. An induced polarization (IP) survey found a roughly circular region of "highs" that coincided with a high soil copper anomaly. The circular anomalies ringed the topographic feature that ultimately was found to contain the Caridad ore body. Soil geochemical copper response over the ore body was subdued, because the soils were derived from a leached capping, whereas leaching in fringe areas that contained less veining was less intense. The ore body was also ringed by the typical high pyrite zone, and this was the anomaly detected by the IP survey. The UN began drilling in the fall of 1966. Eleven holes tested the IP-Cu geochemical high, but none were of commercial interest. The project was returned to the Consejo and was reviewed in the field by G.P. Salas and V.F. Hollister. It was found that the leached capping had not been tested by the past activities, and the Consejo elected to explore that area in 1967. The capping was evaluated by Salas and Hollister and drilling by the Consejo began in 1967. Commercial grade ore intercepts were found in the first hole. The Consejo drilled nine holes, of which eight were commercial. At least 90.7 Mt (100 million tons) of 0.8% copper were indicated by the Consejo in eight holes. Introduction America&apos;s workforce is the heart of the nation&apos;s economy. The health of its members is a matter of national priority. Statistics show that the most common cause of job difficulties is excess use of alcohol or other drugs. Up to 75% of these troubled employees can be returned to productive careers at little expense and with great benefit to their industries. Of the 1.5 million private corporations in the US, only about 500 have alcohol treatment programs. Even fewer have drug abuse programs. It is time that the myths and prejudices surrounding alcohol and drug abuse are dispelled and help is offered. Corporations and labor unions are now finding that programs to treat these diseases benefit both the employees and the industry. The employee derives health and job security. The company sees increased productivity and decreased costs in sick pay and absenteeism. Unfortunately, three-fourths of the nation&apos;s 90.5 million workers are employed in establishments of fewer than 500 employees. In these settings, it is unlikely that either management or the unions will take the initiative in developing programs. Alcohol alone affects the health and productivity of nearly 8% of any workforce. This translates to more than 5 million employees in small business. These workers present an opportunity and a challenge. Alcohol abuse costs the nation nearly $116 billion annually. Seventy billion dollars is attributed to lost production. Medical expenditures related to alcohol are estimated to be nearly $13 billion. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) estimates the cost of substance abuse to industry to be in excess of $4 billion a year. In addition to its economic impact, substance abuse has serious personal and social consequences. The mining industry experiences the same exposure as other industries to alcohol, drug abuse, and other employee problems. However, the existence of these problems poses special hazards because of the unique conditions found in mining. Mining has many safety and health hazards. Employees must have full control of their faculties and give full attention to the tasks at hand. Since the 1975 International Mine Ventilation Congress in Johannesburg there has been a trend in South Africa towards making the mine ventilation departments responsible for monitoring the total environment. This includes the taking of noise and illumination measurements and there is in fact a debate taking place as to whether the departmental title should be changed to &apos;Environmental Control Department&apos;. The organisers of the 2nd international Mine Ventilation Congress have decided that noise and illumination will not be included as Congress subjects and &apos;Total Environment&apos; includes only those facets which are open to debate at the Congress. The choice of mine is significant in that while most Congress papers from South Africa will be devoted either to coal mining or to the somewhat unique deep level gold mines, Prieska Copper Mine is a mine which can easily be identified with similar mines in many other parts of the world. The mine is situated some 750 km south west of Johannesburg and about 600 km north east of Cape Town. Current production (ore and waste) is about 340 000 tons per month and the total underground labour force is just over 2 000. The ore body is a massive sulphide, the main minerals being copper and zinc and the method of mining is sub-level open stoping. Daily average surface temperature conditions range from 85°F (29.5°C) dry bulb and 69.8°F (21°C) wet bulb in mid-summer to 42°F (5.5°C) dry bulb and 36.5°F (2.5°C) wet bulb in mid winter. The information presented in-this paper is limited to what can be gathered by mine ventilation staff as part of an on-going exercise and is obviously not as comprehensive as would be the case if a fully equipped research establishment were to become involved. The paper will be divided into three sections 1) Gases 2) Dust 3) Heat In each section statutory and/or other standards will be set down followed by a discussion of assessment and in some cases control methods.

Biodegradation of spodumene by Asnergillus niger has been investigated. This organism oxidizes sucrose to citric and oxalic acids (in approximately 50-sot proportions) which degrade the spodumene mineral. The kinetic effects of leach variables on the dissolution of lithium were determined. The maximum theoretically attainable rate of lithium extraction was calculated for the effect of pulp density, to be V : 3.01 x 10 kg m sand the corresponding constant value, K = 12.47% pulp density. The apparent activation energy of lithium extraction vas found to be ^E = 20.3 kJ and frequency factor A = 5.66 x 10 s for S-spodumene leaching by synthetic -3 citric and oxalic acids (each in 0.05 kmol m-3 concentrations).

It derives an analytical model of slump flow for yield stress, providing a theoretical basis for quantifying the rheological properties of paste with slump flow. The study uses three different tailings-prepared pastes and constructs an empirical yield stress model, showing high accuracy and good generality.

The ventilation of a bituminous coal mine by means t of a Forced and, or, Exhaust system of ventilation is certainly not new to the mining industry, however, we know from experience that the ventilation of every coal mine presents a variety of problems which are in some instances approached by different methods or means, As in every such problem, there is some difference of opinion as to the advantages and disadvantages of s Exhaust versus Forced ventilation, particularly with regard to safe and effective ventilation of an active pillar area in a gaseous coal mine. We at Island Creek, certainly concede that it is possible to safely ventilate a coal mine by means of Forced ventilation, However, following many years experience in operating a coal mine in an extremely gaseous coal seam, we prefer using an Exhaust system, that is, to reduce the inside mine pressure to a minus atmospheric pressure by means of a mechanically operated fan. This method assures that the return air moving through established airways toward the fan will continue to move in that same direction for a limited time should the fan stop for any reason, also assuring that in the event of a large area fall, the air from the abandoned workings will move directly to the suction side or to the return airways.

AMR delivers reliability and maintenance foundations for the plant and equipment before start-up. Having a dependable reliability and maintenance strategy before start-up is critical, particularly in those first weeks and months during ramp up to stable production. The Asset Maintenance Readiness is the integration of Reliability and Maintenance Engineering analysis/studies at the earliest stages of the new Production System concept and design and during the Capital Project CapEx phases; adding this analysis to the Capital Project CAPEX cost, will have an impact of 2% to 3% of total project cost, but will deliver a good compendium of benefits far from the AMR costs, and those results will be shown upon commissioning and during the life cycle of the plant.

The subject of this paper is mineral processing chemicals - how they work and where they end up environmentally. First of all, it is necessary to recognize that water is the most universally and widely used chemical used by the mining industry to separate desirable minerals from unwanted wastes, sands, and slimes. Of the total world&apos;s water supply, over 97 percent is found in the oceans. Another two percent is tied up in the ice caps, leaving roughly only one percent for us to work with. This one percent is distributed either as ground or surface water and makes up the bulk of all water used industrially. Even with such a small proportion available for immediate use, there appears to be enough fresh water to meet our needs for at least another hundred years. This availability, however, depends heavily on how we handle our waste waters, how we process them, and how we plan for their reuse. Certain governmental agencies have been charged with the task of setting up standards of water quality which must be met prior to environmental discharge. There is even discussion of zero discharge from industrial operations. Due to limited supply and availability, the mining industry has always been forced to reuse its process water or to treat it prior to discharge. Consequently, we are in an enviable position and are presently able to live with the environmentalists demands. To stay on top of the situation, it is necessary to continually concern ourselves with the .effects of changing orebodies and reagents on the final mill effluent. From a process standpoint, it is also important to recognize the impurities of plant recycle water and how they might tend to influence overall operations

"In recent years, much has been said and written on Lake Superior ores, giving the impression that the quality of the ore is deteriorating in grade and that the reserve of high grade ore is rapidly being depleted. Average analyses of ore produced in this district since 1902 show that the average quality has been practically uniform since 1910, and now closely approximates the average for the total reserves of merchantable ore.The accompanying tables and charts show the average analyses for the past ten years, weighted according to tonnage: The chart above shows graphically the average natural iron content for the old range, Mesabi, and grand total Lake Superior ore shipments since 1902.During the last ten years the decrease in iron content for shipments from all ranges except the Menominee was only&apos; .05 of 1 per cent, while for the Menominee ores there was an increase of .052 of 1 per cent. These tabulations and the chart prove that the average quality of the total annual production of iron ore from the Lake Superior district is uniform. Mining men of the district know that all of the merchantable ores of every ore body are being mined out cleanly, and therefore the present average iron ore content of total annual shipments from the district may be expected to continue as long as the present merchantable ore reserves last. There is no logical reason to expect a decrease in the average iron content. Furnaces require ore of definite quality, and if this quality of ore cannot be produced from the natural ore bodies, it must be produced by mechanical means—that is, by concentration of low grade ores or iron formation."

Urban sprawl, and all its attendant problems, is upon us. In Florida, and much of the rest of the world, this has been intensified by a special problem - the coastal zone - a land of high-intensity urbanization localized where the sea and our citizens interact. Florida is blessed by a long coastline of beautiful beaches, indented by estuaries, lagoons and spring fed rivers. Rocky and sand covered islands invite habitation. A large and varied fauna and flora make recreation an avocation and work a pleasure. Accompanying these people are all the sustaining, and satellite industries that find the climate, labor, and commodity markets, cheap water transportation, and natural resources to be attractive. It is estimated that by the year 2008 a megalopolis will stretch down the Atlantic Seaboard from Georgia to encompass the Keys and extend along the Gulf to Alabama. This city will be fenced by the sea on one side and by the water management works, necessary to provide the water supply for this complex, on the other. What can we do about increasing the amount of water available for this population and decreasing the resultant wastes??? Rarely has there been tendered a more favorable opportunity for a coordinated planning and development project that will provide public access to beaches and multiple use of the coastal lands. Florida, as a peninsula swept by ocean breezes, having a largely indigenous water supply and only the beginning of the pollution of estuarine and coastal waters can cope with air, water and coastal dissipation and pollution, if we have a beginning at providing a constant water supply and at limiting pollution. This answer would appear to lie underground, where the porous limestones are interbedded with impervious fine-grained sediments and ground-water that circulates through these aquifers empty to the ocean and Gulf along the continental slopes.

The widespread and increasing use of electrical power for mechanized power has made a tremendous impact on the coal mining industry. It is probably the single most important factor influencing the productivity of a coal mine. In fact, as a part of a study of 62 coal mines in Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia, plus information that was obtained from other sources, it was possible to show a direct correlation between the rise in the use of electrical power and mine productivity, Figure 1. This increased power demand has not always been achieved through proper planning and a careful evaluation of all design parameters, many of which are not even recognized. The result has been increasing problems in power distribution and utilization establishing the need for scientific studies including considerable underground measurements. Because the cost of power for ton of coal produced is generally a relatively low value, inadequate attention is paid its distribution and utilization. Furthermore, a poor system of records and a lack of adequate measurements add further to a paucity of statistical evidence that would permit a rational analysis of overall power costs. However, the direct cost figure alone is highly deceptive; of much greater value is the indirect costs associated with the use (or misuse) of electrical power underground. Success in highly mechanized mining correlates directly with equipment utilization. Today&apos;s machines have tremendous potential capacities but profits are measured in terms of performance and not potential. Thus the reliability of electric motors is an extremely important factor for consideration and the effects of all parameters should be carefully evaluated. Thus while studies are continuing on the evaluation of primary and secondary mine electrical systems with interesting results, this paper will be limited to reporting on the results of a study of a specific motor application.

Elemental sulphur occurrences are widely distributed in two geological environments: -1-Basins containing hydrocarbons and zones of Cenozoic vulcanism. However, very few of these constitute deposits large enough to be of commercial importance. Almost all of the elemental sulphur mined in the world comes from bioepigenetic deposits in petroliferous basins. These deposits occur in two general structural styles: diapiric (salt domes) and stratiform. Examples of diapiric deposits occur in the Gulf Coast basins of Texas, Louisiana, and southern Mexico. Examples of stratiform deposits occur in the Fergana and Amudarya depressions of Central Asia, the Mesopotamian Depression in Iraq, the Cis-Carpathian Trough in Poland and Russia, and the Permian Basin in Texas. Economic bioepigenetic sulphur deposits range in size from approximately 1 million tons of sulphur in the smaller salt dome deposits to more than ZOO million tons of sulphur at the Mishraq stratiform deposit in Iraq. Total world production from bioepigenetic deposits amounts to approximately 16 million tons of sulphur per year, one-half of the world&apos;s present annual consumption of elemental sulphur. Most of the balance of the annual consumption is recovered from sour gas and petroleum. All bioepigenetic sulphur deposits share remarkably similar origins and characteristics. They are formed by anaerobic bacterial replacement of gypsum or anhydrite in tilted basins where evaporite beds are underlain by petroleum. Figure 1 illustrates a generalized cross-section of a salt dome sulphur deposit. Figures Z, 3, and 4 are cross-sections of three types of stratiform sulphur deposits. In terms of sulphur genesis, the only significant difference between the salt dome and stratiform deposits is that the positioning of the anhydrites above the petroleum in the salt domes is caused by diapiric rather than sedimentary processes. In the salt domes, the residual anhydrites of the cap-rocks are accumulated by solution and removal of halite by artesian ground waters.

Performance monitoring, operational practices and ongoing collection of geologic data in open pit slopes all provide valuable information for quantifying potential steepening of subsequent slopes. Mining at the Goldstrike open pit has been ongoing since the early 1980’s, with its share of slope instabilities. In areas where slopes have remained stable, consideration has been made for potential slope steepening of final walls. With the proper available equipment, steepening of bench face angles via pre-split blasting is not an uncommon method for steepening of inter-ramp slope angles. As an alternative at Goldstrike, the commonly used Modified Ritchie Criteria for empirical catch bench width has been adjusted resulting in quantified, rock specific formulas for bench width and rock fall berm placement. The result is an inter-ramp slope angle increase of 2 degrees on a 300m high slope, without the necessary purchases and procedural changes that would be required for pre-split drilling and blasting. The result has shown significant net benefits through reduction in mined waste tons and an increase in gold reserves. Location The Goldstrike open pit is located on the Carlin Trend gold belt in northeastern Nevada USA (Figure 1). The mine has produced over 43 million ounces (1.2M kg) of gold during the past 30 years. Engineering Geology Stratigraphy Figure 2 is a stratigraphic section of the rocks in the Goldstrike open pit. Quaternary alluvium and Miocene materials typically are poorly indurated stiff soils and are not present in all locations. Bedrock units consist of siltstones, mudstones, sandstones and cherts. From top down the major units exposed in the open pit are the Vinini Formation, the Rodeo Creek Unit, and the Popovich Formation. In general, rock mass strength increases with depth.

Public Law 91-190 - January I, 1970 states that, "The purposes of this Act are: To declare a national policy which will encourage productive and enjoyable harmony between man and his environment; to promote efforts which will prevent or eliminate damage to the environment and biosphere and stimulate the health and welfare of man; to enrich the understanding of the ecological systems and natural resources important to the Nation; and to establish a Council on Environmental Duality." The administrative aspects of this National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 have in essence established the requirement that all agencies of the Federal government assess the consequence of their actions with an Environmental Impact Statement. Furthermore, five states have already enacted environmental legislation, and others will surely follow. The Environmental Services Project Director for Dames and Moore has stated in the June issue of that company&apos;s publication, "Elements," that, "The nuclear power industry has perhaps been most affected to date by the Act [NEPAL but recent court decisions, legislative trends and general public concern will accelerate the spread of the Act&apos;s impact on other industries. Mining and petroleum are already involved in environmental affairs." There can be little doubt that within a very short time all environmental aspects of the minerals industry will be strictly regulated and monitored by some agency of Federal and/or state government. Indeed, it is probable that any future effort to extract natural resources will be contingent upon a favorable review of an Environmental Impact Statement. It is also quite possible that continuation of present operations will have to be justified on the basis of proof of an acceptable environmental impact. It is the objective of this paper to present some ways in which remote sensing technology can be applied toward an efficient collection of environmental data necessary for the preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement.
