"The waters of Lake Superior flow into those of Lake Huron through the St. Mary's river. The rapids in this river are about half a mile wide and three-quarters of a mile long, in which distance the fall amounts to about twenty feet. Since this was the only obstacle to navigation between the west end of Lake Superior and ports on any of the other Great Lakes except Ontario, attempts were made many years ago to permit the passage of small boats from Lake Huron to Lake Superior by means of canals and locks. The first canal was built on the Canadian side of the river by the Northwest Fur Company in 1797-98. The lock was 38 feet long, 8 feet 9 inches wide and had a lift of 9 feet. A tow path was made along the shores for oxen to track the bateaux and canoes through the upper part of the rapids., The lock was destroyed during the war of 1812 by United States troops from Mackinac Island.The first ship canal, known as the State Canal, was built on the American side of the river in 1853-55, about 750,000 acres of land in Michigan having been granted by congress to a private company as a 'concession for its construction. This canal was more than a mile long, 65 feet wide at the bottom and 100 feet wide at the water's surface. It had two locks, each 350 feet long by 70 feet wide, with a lift of about 9 feet. The depth of water in the canal was about 13 feet and in the locks about 11 1/2 feet."

The production processes that are developed in the mining and minerals industry are manufactured to be exposed to very aggressive environments. Chemical, abrasion, and impact expose structures and equipment, steel or concrete, to a significant deterioration. This causes damage and adds high costs to operations that can be reflected in the destruction of equipment and structures in the arrest of the production process, which becomes very costly. Also, there is the potential for personnel accidents, which would require large sums of compensation for an employee, thus directly harming the image of the mining operation and company. Manufacturers of paints and coatings that have major centers for research and development (R&D Labs) distributed globally have developed high-tech products for durable protection from the elements for structures and equipment used in the mining industry. The difference between these paintings and coatings and what is normally known as conventional paints (e.g., those called domestic or decorative), is its chemical composition, structured around polymeric components that have highly resistant, chemical and physical properties to cope with extreme conditions to which they are exposed. With this, and only this, longer life of components can be achieved for equipment and structures used in the production processes of the mining industry. Today, in addition to the important features mentioned, some manufacturers of the paints and coatings dedicated to this highly modernized process have invested large sums of money in developing new products that add operational elements to the painting process. These coatings provide added value and significant performance to companies mining operations and that we can describe in three fundamental concepts:

SX operators have conducted extensive shut-downs and repairs over the years to mitigate solution leaks from failed stainless steel false floors and walls in rectangular mixersettler mix boxes. Hydrodynamic modeling using first principles and constitutive equations of fluid mechanics can inform an efficient structural redesign sufficient to eliminate the plate failures. Updated mix boxes have been performing without failure for over a decade. Given the extensive construction of the original Holmes and Narver mixer-settler design throughout the world that includes stainless steel lined rectangular primary and auxiliary mix boxes, SX operators may benefit from the approach, eliminating costly shutdowns, leaks to containment, and hazardous repairs.

White Pine Copper Company operates a mine in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan using a modified room-and-pillar system for extracting ore.1 Mine production averages 15, 500 tons per day. The terrain is predominantly level and the depth of cover varies from 500 to 800 feet over the present workings with depth increasing as mining progresses down the dip. The deposit is situated on a low angle plunging, anticlinal structure composed of sedimentary beds. Local terminology for the stratigraphic units which contain the ore horizons, named in ascending order, is as follows: lower sandstone, parting shale, upper sandstone and upper shale. The ore zones of copper enrichment are, contained in the parting and upper shales. The parting shale will vary; from 6. 5 to 9.0 feet thick; the upper sandstone from 2 to 10 feet; and the upper shale from 1. 5 to 6. 5 feet. Two variation of the room-and-pillar system are used to extract the ore depending on grade and local ground conditions. One system is called the parting shale method and recovers the parting shale only. This system requires a mining height of 8 1/2 feet to accommodate large-scale, high-capacity equipment and this working height is obtained by removing approximately 1 to 2 feet of the barren lower sandstone with the ore. Under the second system, locally termed full column, the mining height is about 14-1/2 feet and this system removes the parting shale, the upper sandstone and the lower mineralized zone, approximately 1-1/2 feet, of the upper shale at which point it is possible to maintain a competent back (Fig. 1).1

Water is a necessary part of our environment. It is a biological necessity, but more than that, it is a necessary part of our life style. Those of us who live in the north woods expect water to be part of the scene. There are few natives of this region who would be content to eliminate the streams, the lakes, the marshes, or our forests. Throughout the world, water has been so much a part of man's environment and man's adaptation to life has been so closely tied to water that our way of life and ways of accomplishing our work include water as an essential tool. The production of taconite is an example of our dependence on water. Other methods could have been developed to process taconite ore but the process methods chosen utilize water. Water is used for grinding and separation and for trans- porting the ore from one part of the process to another and for dust control. A typical large plant producing 10 million tons of taconite pellets per year will have on the order of 130,000 gallons per minute (8.202 m 3/51 of water in circulation in the plant. About 120,000 gal. per min. (7.571 m 31s) will pass to tailing thickeners where 110,000 gal. per min. (6.940 m 31s) is separated from tailing and returned to the process. About 15,000 gal. per min. (.9464 m 31s) goes with thickened tailing to tailing basin. My point is that there are great volumes of water in motion in a taconite plant,

Introduction In difficult times such as these, there is a strong reaction to the current way of doing things. Typical reactions that we have all heard are "There has to be a better way," "We're pricing ourselves out of business," "We have to improve our productivity," and "We have to have more cooperation," between union and management and employees and management. All of these comments have at their roots one common factor - getting the maximum amount for your dollar. The other factor inherent in these statements is productivity. I have not yet met a person in our industry who has not expressed the opinion that we should, and that we can, improve our productivity. Reducing Labor Costs In light of these factors I suspect we have all spent a fair amount of time examining our labor costs. For some of us, labor costs are a high proportion of our total cost of doing business. To alleviate the impact of these costs, we have generally done four things. We have reduced our number of employees, shut down operations for appropriate periods, sought concessions from union employees, and placed freezes on wages, salaries, and other benefits on nonunion employees. These approaches have been made to improve current shortfalls in our cash positions - to tide us over, as it were - or to provide us with a chance for survival. These are short-term measures that help to bring immediate relief, but can pose significant problems (or challenges), for the longer term. For instance, what do we do when times improve? How much do things have to improve before we do anything? By seeking concessions from unions in bad times, what do we do when unions come to us in good times? It is a rather sad and critical fact that we have grown too fat during the good times and too thin during the bad. In the first case, we have failed to optimize our earnings. In the second, we have cut ourselves too far. Consequently, when good or better times have arrived, we have had to bulk up our requirements to meet production commitments. In mining, for example, when times become tough, we tend to reduce our development plans so that when times improve we have to really "sock it to 'em," so that we can maintain productive capacities. We should plan ahead a little more to reduce the amplitude of our cyclical wavelength, so that in good times profits are optimized and in bad time we are better able to take the strain. Of course, forecasting cycles is not a refined art, but if we properly control our work force levels and costs at all times, and therefore optimize our productivity, we would be more able to withstand the problems we face today. Unfortunately, it appears that it takes bad times to bring us to a realistic appraisal of our way of managing our businesses. Labor Practices Not all of the problems now faced are due to low metal prices. Inflation has played a major role in bringing costs to a frightening level. Trade unions alone can not be blamed for high inflation levels over the past several years, popular though that notion is. Contract negotiations, after all, require two parties. Indeed, our current levels of labor cost are due to two factors: • We have felt obliged to keep our employees whole, relative to the cost of living. • We have felt obliged to maintain our competitive position relative to our peers, in order to maintain our ability to attract and retain a skilled, efficient work force. In the first case, our felt obligation has been applied without due recognition of the factor of performance, either in individuals or groups. Average, even mediocre performers, have been amply rewarded for their average work and mediocrity, while the good performers, no doubt receiving more for their good work and effort, have not perhaps appreciated the slight premium for their effectiveness. The rather predictable result of this practice has been that the average and mediocre stay that way (why change?), while some (certainly not all) of the good performers have said "It's not worth it," and slipped into the warm, cosy pool of the average and mediocre. In the second case, that of maintaining competitiveness with other companies' employees, we have compounded an already serious problem of lack of skilled tradesmen by paying higher and higher prices for the existing pool to maintain comparability without improving the flow of more skilled people through sound and sufficient training programs. We have the rather dubious pleasure of paying more and more for the same problems. Compensation is either mutually agreed, as with unions, or it is unilaterally applied, as with nonunion employees. Generally, there is more flexibility available to the employer when dealing with nonunionized groups than there is with unionized groups. Methane gas explosions are a major risk in underground coal mining operations. The severity of such explosions can range from local area damage to massive loss of miners’ lives along with significant damage to mine infrastructure and ventilation controls that may lead to mine closure and loss of the entire operation. This study demonstrates the viability of integrating a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) combustion model into a longwall mine ventilation model to simulate methane gas explosions in the longwall face area. The resulting 3D methane gas explosion simulation can provide better understanding of the fundamental physics and the potential impact of an explosion in an underground longwall coal mine.

Mine tailings storage facilities (TSFs) can be a significant source of fine, respirable dust. About 25 percent of the mass fraction of tailings from a hard-rock mine consists of particles of a respirable size (smaller than 10 μm) [1]. This dust poses concerns, especially for nearby communities, because of its detrimental impact on respiratory health. Respirable tailings dust, primarily composed of quartz or free silica (SiO2), may cause silicosis, chronic pulmonary disease, bronchitis, collagen vascular diseases, and chronic granulomatous infections [2].

I wish to register strong disagreement with the choices of drilling sites chosen by the Continental Scientific Drilling Committee, while endorsing the stated objectives. Of special significance is the lack of any site involving the metals most needed today in the US, while 9 to 13 km of drilling are allocated to gold and silver districts and 11 to 17 km to base metal (mainly copper) districts. Why is nothing proposed for platinum group or chromite? Is this because the committee did not know of such a site? If so, I offer such a site in California (see Fig. 1). The mineralization shown in Table 1 occurs in a large peridotite body in western Tehama County, CA. Petrography has demonstrated unequivocal evidence of migrated PGE deposited in peridotite and chromite of hypabyssal nature. Active diapirism (due probably to serpentine buoyancy) above a reactivated mantle to surface conduit marks the position of the conduit. Young explosion breccia cemented loosely by volcanic glass and tuff demonstrates the significance of the conduit as the prime source of the various emissions. Deep drilling could result in major metals discoveries as well as shedding light on the grand questions of platinum group mineralization. What role water has played in this occurrence is not yet certain; but chlorine and asphaltite have been detected in and adjacent to native PGM, suggesting a major role for water. The explosion breccia suggests that this excellent site could overlie entrapped geothermal steam.

The prolonged exposure of equipment operators to shock and whole-body vibration (WBY) is linked to cumulative back, neck, and abdominal disorders. In low-coal mines, space restrictions make seat suspensions difficult to use in isolating operators from shock and WBY. Researchers at NIOSH, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, are responding to these issues by investigating viscoelastic foams. For the full-load case. an ergonomic seat with viscoelastic foams isolated the shuttle car operator from shock at 15Hz. Researchers used results from additional foam testing with an analytical model to identify viscoelastic foams that provide shock isolation at a frequency below 5 Hz.

Had the blank on the Abstract form been sufficiently spacious a more appropriate title for this paper would be: Neogene Tectonism, Magmatic Activity and Hydrothermal Precious Metal Mineralization in Anatolian Turkey; an Analog with the Basin and Range Province of the Western U.S.? Like the alternative title no thing in Turkey is simple. Its history is long and convolute; its culture fascinating; its metallogeny diverse and its geology very complex. This paper will focus only on the geology of western' Anatolia and the precious metal potential of this third of Turkey. The argument is in the article but to save the reader time and suspense I'll put my conclusions up front- the potential is great and the possibilities exciting.

Many Latin American countries are facing a scarcity of water. As such, infrastructure decisions are quite different from those made in parts of the world that experience a positive water balance. In the latter case, the water treatment approach tends to be ?treat and discharge.? For Latin American regions facing the challenges that go with a negative water balance, the focus is on resource optimization and reuse. Historically, the water challenge has had a significant impact on economic development in Latin America, especially in sectors such as mining, where water usage is high. At the same time, countries such as Chile and Brazil are major development targets for mining and oil and gas operations. Given the water supply challenge, industry is increasingly turning to technologies and processes that maximize water recovery and reuse. With sulfide precipitation and ion exchange water treatment processes for example, it is possible to treat and recover more than 99 percent of water for reuse onsite. These technologies have been applied successfully in other regions of the world where water conservation practices are essential to economic survival.

This paper proposes a hydromechanically coupled numerical modeling approach to quantify the influence of various parameters on the mechanical and hydraulic performance of protective water barrier pillars (PWBP). The results are validated for two case studies having pillar widths of 16 and 42 m at cover depths of 136 and 190 m and water heads of 25 and 141 m. The outcome can be significantly helpful in the rational design of these pillars in underground coal mines.

Copper slag is mainly used in cutting tools, abrasives, asphalt pavement, road construction, and in the production of concrete as an alternative to sand and cement [1]. As a renewable resource, only about 15-20 percent of the slag is used for these applications, and the dumping or disposal of surplus unused slag results in waste of a certain amount of usable metal in the feedstock [2]. In this work, the oxidation behavior of copper smelting slag under nonisothermal condition is studied using data obtained by the thermogravimetric (TG) method, and the kinetics parameters and reaction mechanism of oxidation are determined. It provides a theoretical basis for the comprehensive recovery of iron resources in slag and the selection of reasonable slag-making conditions.

The Electroslurry TM electrowinning concept has been incorporated into a process flowsheet for recovering copper from smelter flue dusts. The process has averaged 96% recovery of the copper as high-grade electrowon while at the same time removing a majority of the impurities that degrade drawn copper as a result of recycling flue dust and liberator cathodes: The dust is processed through several stages consisting of leaching, copper precipitation, Electroslurry TM electrowinning and waste liquor treatment. The process may be integrated into a smelter operation and become an effective and feasible means of maintaining good product purity.

The floor-heave and no-floor-heave phenomena at a western U.S. coal mine could not be properly simulated in numerical models using conventional shear-dominant failure criteria. Although the previous numerical study using FLAC3D very reasonably demonstrated these phenomena, 3DEC modeling in conjunction with the discrete fracture network (DFN) technique was performed to better understand the true behavior of floor heave associated with underground mining in an anisotropic stress field. As a result, the latter models predicted floor heave that agreed with relative amounts of observed heave from each gateroad system, but the cause of heave was mainly related to the degree of anisotropy instead of the size of the pillar.

Several years ago, North American mining companies began to realize they needed to expand their spheres to remain viable. This strategy has been successful, according to Robert W. Schafer. Today, companies from other continents have also recognized the need for an international view for long-term growth and viability, he said. Schafer is vice president for exploration with Kinross Gold. He was the program chairman and moderator of the keynote session at the 1997 SME annual meeting, held in Denver, CO, Feb. 23-27. The theme of the meeting was "Minerals - Serving the Global Community." A record attendance of more than 6,000 people participated in the meeting, which featured 415 exhibitors occupying 582 booths. The title of the keynote session was "Corporate Perspectives on a Global Minerals Industry." Each of the three keynote speakers discussed a different perspective of a global minerals industry.

The large volume of water used in coal preparation plants makes water recycling a necessity. Economical cleaning of dirty water usually requires flocculation with an efficient organic polyelectrolyte. This paper discusses identification of optimum flocculant systems. Supporting laboratory data with on-site tests and full scale field trials supplies information necessary for matching the polymer to the plant.

Most of the world’s production of natural soda ash comes from the mining and processing of trona found near Green River, WY. The processing of trona ores to ultimately yield a high-quality dense soda ash product and reject the insoluble gangue species, primarily in the form of oil shale, is water and energy intensive. It is speculated, however, that the glass-manufacturing industry, which is the largest consumer of soda ash, may be able to use product of a lower grade and consistent level of the insoluble constituents. Thus, the viability of using sensor-based sorting to produce a beneficiated trona stream that would be fed to calcination was investigated. The study encompassed the preparation of a run-of-mine (ROM) Green River ore sample; selection of specimens sized 25 to 75 mm; imaging of the specimens by sensors based on X-ray transmission (XRT), color and laser-induced fluorescence (LIF); insolubles analysis of the specimens; and a bench-scale sorting test. Results of the study established that a correlation between the color of the individual ore particles and their insoluble content exists, and that a surface-detection-based sensor, particularly LIF, is apparently more suitable than XRT to produce a beneficiated trona stream. The bench-scale sorting test demonstrated that a 65 percent separation efficiency and a 70 percent recovery of trona could be achieved.
