The benefits of historic mining to this country have been many, but have come at a cost to the environment that has only begun to be understood over the past twenty years. While estimates vary, it is generally recognized that there are over 200,000 inactive and abandoned hardrock mines, with most of them located in the western U.S. Only a fraction of them are believed to be sources of metal releases with significant adverse environmental effects to the watersheds and receiving streams. State water-quality and natural resource management agencies have noted that hundreds of miles of streams are metal-impacted, and the aggregate effects of these sites within watersheds and drainage basins is poorly understood. Resources for the environmental assessment of abandoned mine land (AML) sites and watersheds have been and continue to be limited. Few hardrock mining states receive substantial reclamation funds under the (coal) Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act. EPA Region VIII (EPA8) has an estimated 90,000 abandoned mining, milling and smelter sites, mainly in Colorado, Montana, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming. An estimated 13,000 of the sites may have metal releases causing Clean Water Act and CERCLA non-compliance. Results of inventories by states and federal land managing agencies, indicate it is plausible that only 3,000-4,000 of these sites may be causing significant environmental degradation.

The back-filling operation at Olympic Dam mine supports a 9.8 million tonne per year (Mtla) underground Longhole Open Stoping operation. It involves a combination of Cemented Aggregate Fill (CAF), Surface Rockfill and Underground Rockfill. The fill material is introduced from the surface via bore-holes into the top of the stopes. Due to the deleterious effects of the dust and the thickness of the atmosphere in the stope it is not possible to view the filling process. The need for a means to measure the filling process is driven by the stopes, which have both rock and CAF fill placed in them. The large volumes and high relative cost of CAF makes the minimization of CAF fill a business priority. Incorrect filling can lead to the sterilization of ore reserve. The use of millimeter wave radar to view through the haze to give real-time data on the relative positions of the different fill masses is being developed as an in-stope fill control device. This paper reviews the salient points of the technology and its potential use in the back-filling operation at Olympic Dam. The broader potential of this technology for use in the mining industry by 'seeing' through water and dust laden environments such as that found in stopes and ore passes is discussed.

The present study introduces a new approach to understand the copper dissolution rate and to find an adapted mathematical statement for particle shrinkage rate in a batch bioleaching system. Four size classes of a chalcopyrite concentrate, namely [D1 : (−54 + 44)μm, D2 : (−44 + 38)μm, D3 : (−38 + 25)μm and D4 : (−25)μm], were used in the batch bioleaching tests by applying a mixed culture of moderately thermophilic microorganisms. The pulp density and temperature were 8 (%w/v) and 50 °C, respectively. Findings delineated that the bioleaching time can be divided into two specific time intervals: first, the surface reactions were the prevailing controlling step; second, the prevailing mechanism was diffusion through the product layer, whereas the overall rate of the process may be related to both through a Q factor using a mixed model. A mathematical model was developed based on particle size distribution (PSD) and a kinetic model. Experimental validation of the mixed model was accomplished by the representative sample with d80 = 54 microns. Results showed that the PSD of the specific sample was in good agreement with Rosin–Rammler function. Besides, the simulation result of the conversion fraction had the best conformity with the experimental data (with a maximum error of approximately 7%). This paper should be considered as an initial part of a larger, global model for chalcopyrite concentrate bioleaching.

The bulk scavenger tailing from Aberfoyle's Hellyer Concentrator, which represents about one-third of the total tailing, runs about 2.5-3 g/t gold and 140-200 g/f silver. Both values are very finely disseminated, particularly the gold. Aberfoyle wished to establish whether ultra-fine grinding followed directly by cyanide leaching could be applied to the tailing for recovery of gold and silver. The work comprised the determination of gold and silver recoveries as a function of grind size and leaching time, the specific energy consumption required for continuous wet grinding of the tailing to the specified product size in a small horizontal continuous stirred mill, and an estimate of the rate of media consumption. The maximum extraction of gold, 23.3% was obtained from the finest product, with the highest cyanide concentration and longest leach time, confirming earlier work. A similar result was obtained for silver. The specific energy requirement for milling rose from 27.7 kWh/t for a P80 of 8.1 um to 219 kWh/t for a Pea of 2.3 um. The consumption of ceramic media was about 1.6 g/kg of final product. An extensive QEM'SEM Trace Mineral Search on the unground tailing failed to identify any gold-bearing particles but did identify silver-bearing particles which displayed a variety of textural associations and liberation characteristics.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated column bioleaching as a means of recovering manganese from a domestic low-grade oxide ore. Manganese was solubilized from the ore using indigenous heterotrophic microorganisms and molasses as the nutrient source. The effects of medium flow rate, molasses concentration, and frequency of medium replacement on the rate of manganese extraction were examined. Results showed that flow rates between 0.4 and 8.1 L/min/m2 had little impact on manganese extraction, while an increase in the total amount of molasses applied during leaching directly affected the extent and rate of manganese extraction. Manganese extractions of more than 90% were achieved in 12 weeks of bioleaching in column tests using 500 g charges of ore. Sugar utilization by the microorganisms and formation of organic acid metabolites were monitored by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Two methods were evaluated to recover manganese from the sugar- depleted bioleaching medium: (1) adsorption onto weak cation exchange resin, followed by stripping and precipitation techniques; and (2) direct precipitation of the manganese as MnCO, using ammonium carbonate. Both recovery methods removed at least 95% of the solubilized manganese from the medium as a carbonate salt. The stripped molasses medium was replenished with fresh molasses and recycled back through the bioleach column, successfully leaching more manganese.

Energy Developments Ltd. (EDL) has developed power plants at two Australian coal mines that featuring 94 gas-fueled Caterpillar G3516 engine/generator sets. They will convert to electricity 145 kt/a (160,000 stpy) of coal-seam methane gas for sale to a local utility. The $100-million project will cut the sites' methane emissions in half, provide a low-cost energy source and offset mine operating costs. The project began in May 1995. It is located at the Appin and Tower longwall underground mines, 80 km (50 miles) south of Sydney in New South Wales. The installation is one of the first to capture coal-seam gas from mine ventilation air and gas drainage systems. Coal- seam gas contains 40% to 60% methane, which fluctuates constantly. The system is expected to convert 578,000 m3/d (20.4 million cu ft/d) of coal-seam gas to 94 MW. It will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 3.5 Mt/a (3.8 million stpy) of CO, equivalent emissions. The Appin and Tower mines each produce 2 Mtla (2.2 million stpy) of clean coking coal. They operate around the clock with about 400 workers per site. The mines are owned by BHP Steel, Collieries Division, which will share the revenues from energy sales. The Appin Power Partnership consists of EDL and Lend Lease Development Corp.

Pittsburgh No. 8 coal, cleaned by conventional froth flotation, was oxidized in a 2-L Parr stirred bench-top autoclave. Autoclave tests were carried out for up to 5 hrs under the following conditions: 150 to 225ºC, 60 to 500 psi 02 and 15 to 60 g of coal per 600 mL of distilled water. The oxidation of coal was evaluated by measuring the total acidic group formed on the surface of the coal and by measuring the adsorption (under standard conditions) of calcium ion from a solution. The degree of oxidation of the coal increased continuously, without much leveling off, with increasing oxygen pressure. With increasing temperature, the oxidation of the coal increased sharply between 150 to 175ºC and then leveled off above 175 °C. The adsorption of calcium was >3% on coal oxidized under the most favorable conditions. The adsorption of calcium on coal increased sharply with increasing equilibrium pH. The loss in Btu was found to be sensitive to oxidation temperature. This study concluded that the optimum oxidation of coal is achieved over 3 hrs at high oxygen pressures (e.g., 500 psi) at ~170ºC. This study also concluded that, when measured in terms of calcium adsorption, Btu loss and reaction time, the oxidation achieved in an autoclave is far superior to that achieved in a fluidized bed.

Pull-off forces were measured for 8-9 pm diameter polystyrene (PSI particles on smooth spin- coated polystyrene films and hexadecanethiol (HDT) self-assemble monolayer surfaces using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Three parameters were controlled during experimentation: (i) the maximum applied load pressing the particle onto the substrate was varied from 50 to 4,000 nN, (ii) loading/unloading rate for the particle to attach and separate from the substrate varied from 0.01 to 9.3 Hz, and (iii) contact time for particle to reside on the substrate surface before retracting the particle to separate it from the surface changed from I µsecond to 200 seconds. the pull-off forces increased with increasing applied loading, increasing loading/unloading rate, and increasing contact time for the PS particle on PS film and on HDT monolayer. The PS particles experience elastic and plastic deformations duringpull-08 force measurements. Plastic deformation is primarily associated with flattening of surface irregularities. The results obtained in this research suggest that the particle-substrate contact areas of the magnitude comparable to those predicted by the JKR contact mechanical model can be reached in the AFM experiments by using high applied loads and long particle-substrate contact times. This result re-opens the prospect of' using AFM for studying surface energies of deformable micro-particles, even if the micro-particles have small irregularities on the surface.

INTRODUCTION For more than a century, artificial ground freezing has been used for groundwater control and structural support for excavations. Most of the early uses of the freezing method were for sinking deep access shafts for mines and tunnels (1,2,3,4). More recently, ground freezing has increasingly been used for construction of large diameter cofferdams and soft-ground and mixed-face tunnels (5). Although ground freezing has been used in the past-for tunnels, it was invariably used as a last resort measure, where more conventional measures could not be used. The more recent freezing applications, however, have become increasingly cost competitive with more conventional techniques, and are now being included as part of the design concept (6,7,8,9,10,11,12). The purpose of this paper is to describe some of the more recent applications of ground freezing for tunnel construction. The paper begins with a brief description of the most commonly used freezing system, the Poetsch process. Recent tunneling projects utilizing ground freezing for structural support are then discussed. The dissolution of gold in cyanide_ leaching has been we11 published with the genera1 acceptance that gold is oxidised by oxygen and stabilized by complexation with cyanide [1]. The dissolution of gold is essentially an electrochemical process. The rate of the anodic gold dissolution is controlled by the cyanide concentration. - (2) While the cathode reduction of oxygen is controlled by dissolved oxygen concentration - (3) There are a number of factors influencing the concentration of oxygen, and if 1owered substanth.lly will effect the efficiency of the leaching plant. These include: "' salinity "' temperature "'partial pressure "'oxygen consumption rate The use of pure oxygen for· cyanidation is only beneficial if oxygen is rate limiting, Conversely a slurry saturated with air (typically 5 - 8 ppm) may not be enough for maximum leach rate. The diagram below shows the maximum dissolved oxygen levels obtainable with pure oxygen and air. DISSOLVED OXYGEN (MAXIMUM) IN WATER At steady state, the rate of the cathodic reaction must equal the rate of the anodic reaction. Thus the rate of gold dissolution is dependent on both the· cyanide and oxygen concentrations. - (4) Using an average of Do/Den =· 1.5 [2] (where Do and Den are the oxygen and cyanide diffusion coefficients) the table below illustrates the maximum effective oxygen concentrations for given cyanide levels in clean water [3].

A large portion of the public lands in the United States is managed by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Public lands administered by the BLM comprise about 39 per cent (270 million acres) of the entire Federal surface estate or about 1/8 of the surface of the United States. Most of this land, located in the 11 Western States, including Alaska, is available for mineral exploration and development. The BLM is a multiple-use land management agency responsible for the balanced management of the public lands and their resources. The BLM's task is to ensure the balanced and sustainable development of the public lands and resources. This task translates into the management of people and their use of the public resources. As a result, the BLM manages a diverse group of programs including recreation, range lands, timber lands, fish and wildlife habitat, watershed, wilderness, scientific, cultural, and historic properties, and most importantly for this paper, energy and mineral resources. The BLM has developed several new policies with respect to mining, including policies on inspection and enforcement, financial guarantees for reclamation, and the use of cyanide. The goal of these policies is to demonstrate to the American public that mineral exploration and development can be an integral part of sustainable development on public lands in an environmentally sound manner.

Three years ago, the New Britannia Mine started a project to improve productivity of its cyanidation plant. Results indicated that gold dissolution was strongly influenced by sulphide minerals and that the slower gold dissolution rate had a detrimental effect on overall gold recovery. The leaching strategy had to be modified to address this issue. Changes to the leaching circuit proved to be very successful. The first action was to introduce lead nitrate in the leaching circuit. The strategy of addition of lead nitrate was upgraded in three steps. An on-line free cyanide analyser was installed and the strategy of cyanide addition automated. The enhancement of the leaching kinetics have resulted: an 4% increase of gold recovery, from 87.8% in 1996 to 91.9% in 1999, which represents a reduction of 0.17 git Au in the leach residue; an average of 1330 additional extracted gold ounces per year from 1997 to 1999; a 21 % reduction in the cyanide consumption; the shut down of the cyanide destruction plant; and finally a contribution to the 27% reduction in the overall production cost per tonne of ore.($ 3 per ton). The significant increase of the throughput was instrumental in the reduction of the processing cost. In 1999, the improvement of gold recovery represented an additional gross revenue of $c""l.9 Million. The project is discussed in details in this paper.

A specialized Pore-Fluid Array sampler (PFA) was designed to collect and store pore-fluids to monitor temporal changes of ions and gases in gas hydrate bearing sediments. We tested the hypothesis that pore-fluid chemistry records hydrate formation or decomposition events and reflects local seismic activity. The PFA is a seafloor probe that consists of an interchangeable instrument package that houses OsmoSamplers, long-term pore-fluid samplers; a specialized low-dead volume fluid coupler; and eight sample ports along a 10-meter sediment probe shaft. The PFA was deployed at Mississippi Canyon 118, a Gulf of Mexico hydrate site. A 160-day record was acquired from the overlying water (OLW) and 1.3 meters below seafloor (mbsf). Fluids were measured for dissolved chloride, sulfate, and methane concentrations and dissolved inorganic carbon and methane stable carbon and deuterium isotope ratios. Chloride and sulfate did not change significantly over time, suggesting the absence of gas hydrate formation or decomposition events. Over the temporal record, methane concentrations averaged 4 mM at 1.3 mbsf and was thermogenic in origin (d13C-CH4 = -32.4±3.4?). The timing of an anomalous 14 mM methane spike coincided with a nearby earthquake (Mw=5.8), consistent with the hypothesis that pore-fluid chemistry reflects seismic events. Rapid industrial growth in India has caused the country to realize the strategic importance of its zinc and lead deposits. Private companies, nationalized in 1965, are now a corporate public sector organization that is making great strides in developing the nation's lead-zinc mining capability. The main mining area is centered around Zawar at Rajasthan. It consists a group of mines - Mochia, Balaria, Zawarmala and Baroi. Mining activities have also been extended by opening the mines at Rajpura-Dariba at Rajasthan, Sargipallie at Orissa and Agnigundala at Andhra Pradesh. A huge deposit has been explored at Agucha in the Bhilwara district but full-scale production has not yet begun. Annual consumption of zinc and lead in India has risen steadily from 25 and 7.9 kt (27,500 and 8700 st), respectively, in 1973-1974 to 162.8 and 80 kt (179,450 and 88,000 st), respectively, in 1989-1990. Mine production has also risen consistently to cope with the increased metal demand. The mining company hopes to increase production at existing mines and upgrade the beneficiation and smelting facilities. Moreover, mining operations may be expanded by opening up new units that are now awaiting governmental clearances. Bergbau AG Niederrhein, a subsidiary of Ruhrkohle AG; Essen, Germany, is working coal mines on both sides of the Rhine River. The Prosper Mine in the City of Bottrop has a production of about 13,000 tons per day and has been in operation since the turn of the century. Mining has moved to the north as coal deposits south of Bottrop are exhausted. To facilitate ventilation, material handling, and transportation new shafts are being constructed in the northern coal fields. The Prosper 10 shaft is being sunk to develop the Prosper - Haniel coal field which has reserves of 280 million tons. In October, 1976 Bergbau AG Niederrhein awarded the shaft sinking contract for the 1047 m deep, 8 m inside diameter Prosper 10 shaft to Gewerkschaft Walter; Essen, Germany. Construction costs will amount to about 40 million DM with construction completion scheduled for 1981. GEOLOGY The shaft, located near the town of Kirchhellen north Bottrop, is being sunk in the Grafenwalder Horst between two faults on the south west flank of the Kirchheller Anticline. 270 m of upper cretaceus sands and marls overlay sandstone bedrock at the shaft location. The upper 124 m of this section contain highly saturated sands interspersed with marl. In order to successfully sink the shaft through this section, ground stabilization by freezing was used.

One of the major criterion of any mechanised tunnelling operation is to minimize downtime of the tunnelling machine by employing the most efficient muck handling system space and economic factors permit. A tunnelling machine which remains idle during a large percentage of the available shift working time is a luxury no contractor can afford. There are several possible reasons for non-productivity of a tunnelling machine ... the inability of the muck handling system to keep pace with the tunnelling machine on a continuous basis is one major cause. In large diameter tunnels, where several trains or more than one muck hauling unit can operate simultaneously, downtime of the tunnelling machine may be kept to an acceptable level. On small to medium diameter tunnels, 8 feet to 14 feet in diameter, the muck removal support system is normally restricted in capacity, resulting in an excessive tunnelling machine downtime as the tunnel extends from the shaft. There is a need for an efficient, continuous and economical muck removal system for small to medium size tunnels being driven by a hard rock machine. This paper is intended to provide an insite into pneumatic conveying, and explain the Radmark System; its development and utilisation in the tunnelling and mining fields. The study of the apatite deposits of the Aldan Shield shows wide spread of the Precambrian apatite-carbonate ores and possibilities of using them for extraction of apatite. Dependency of flotation on ore minerals was studied according to the following scheme: preparation of the monomineralic samples of anhydrite, gypsum, chlorite, serpentine, phlogopite, apatite; mixing them in apatite ore of the average composition; followed by flotation. Another series of the experiments was conducted to ascertain a dependence of flotation activity of the different minerals on the different flotation reagents, which were used as collectors. It has been shown that apatite from silicate-carbonate ores is most extractable because it has the biggest size of grains and is the most free of inclusions. Beneficiation of the sulphate-containing apatite-carbonate rocks is possible when flotol - 7.9 is used as a collector. Meanwhile, the use of the tallaktam leads to an increase in the sulphate recovery. The estimation of individual technological features of the layered Mghydrosilicates and their influence on the process of beneficiation has been examined using samples of apatite-dolomite ore (P205-8%) with the addition of the phlogopite, serpentine and chlorite. The results show that there is little influence of the chlorite presence on the flotation while the serpentine presence leads to a decrease of the flotation, because of its high specific surface area.

Although these exhibit similar structures overall, there are more acute valuation problems in alluvials. Most of this description will therefore be about alluvials with comments on bedded vis-a- vis alluvial deposits where necessary. Although geological comments refer mainly to lateritic deposits the method of valuation described applies to all bedded deposits, e. g. coal, limestone, phosphate. In general, the more a deposit suffers alteration during or after its formation and the more the sampling process disturbs its material, the greater the difficulties of valuation. Emphasis is laid on structure, as in any kind of deposit valuation cannot proceed until its structures are understood. Not all the structures found in alluvials will occur in bedded deposits, of course.

Suggestions have been made that the appraisal of mining assets using discounted cash flow techniques should be based solely on proven and probable reserves in reliance upon the widespread international recognition of uniform resource definitions. Following a review of generally accepted valuation principles, a survey of the literature and, most importantly, a review of real transactions in the open market, it is clear that valuators should not be constrained by the growing acceptance of modern mineral resource codes. On the contrary, valuation practitioners should be encouraged to examine all classes of mineralization and, after making due allowance for risk, to utilize all mineral resources as a basis for determining fair market value.

he need in the mineral industry to treat increasingly larger tonnages has caused a demand for larger installations. In order to limit the size of these installations, it was necessary to build machines with larger capacities or production output. With this aim in mind, WEMCO Division developed the No. 120 WEMCO-Fagergren Flotation Cell in 1967. These large cells have been compared to conventional smaller cells from the standpoint of metallurgical performance, investment costs, power requirements and maintenance requirements in many plants throughout the world. Figure 1 illustrates the size difference of the No. 120 when compared with the No. 66. All results to date indicate the large No. 120 cell surpasses the smaller machines in all categories.
