The efficiency of heap leaching is reduced by poor solution flow characteristics (i.e., channeling and ponding) that result from fines migration. Agglomeration of the ore can immobilize fines, but for agglomeration to be successful in copper leaching, an acid-resistant binder is needed to stabilize the agglomerates. Until now, there has not been a satisfactory method to evaluate whether a binder was effective, other than squeezing a handful to see if it ?feels right.? This paper reports on several procedures that have been developed to quantitatively determine whether a binder gives good performance in an acidic solution. These procedures have been used to identify binders that would be suitable for copper heap leaching.

Mining companies and contractors are looking at Wirtgen Surface Miners to provide flexibility at their operations. Wirtgen Surface Miners have been used in the surface mining industry for over fifteen years. The principle behind the Wirtgen Miner is a rotating drum equipped with tungsten carbide tipped cutting tools that excavates and sizes the material. The drum helix augurs the mined material to the center of the drum where it is loaded onto the primary conveyor belt. From there the material is conveyed to the discharge belt and into a truck bed. The cutting drum is located in the center of the machine, near the center of gravity. This permits the machine to cut hard materials as the entire machine weight is converted into cutting forces. Conventional mining practices are process, equipment, and labor intensive. Furthermore, strict environmental requirements pertaining to noise levels, dust pollution, and blasting, near buildings or urban areas, limit the application of conventional methods. Mining/ Construction contractors are using Wirtgen Miners in various limestone excavation projects, such as highway expansion projects, and new roads in housing developments. Mining companies in the industrial minerals and coal industry are using Wirtgen Miners to load directly onto trucks, eliminating the rehandling process and ultimately, primary crushers.

This paper describes the specifications and capabilities of a 6 ft (1.83 m) diameter laboratory rotary cutting machine which was designed and fabricated under a Bureau of Mines (USBM) contract awarded to the Colorado School of Mines (CSM). The machine will be used for carrying out research and development programs aimed toward improving the design and operation of mechanical tunnel, raise and shaft boring equipment.

The paper highlights development of tunneling methodology in the UK during the years 1990-2000 using the example of two major tunneling contracts where there solution of difficult tunneling problems during construction has benefited the industry as a whole. The paper deals with specific difficulties on two Contracts. The London Water Ring Main 80 kms (50 miles) long tunnel average internal diameter 2.54 m (9 ft4 in) and the Brighton Stormwater Tunnel 5.2 km (3.2 miles) long tunnel with an internal diameter of 6 m (19 ft 8 in). The results of human endeavour and technological innovations will demonstrate the giant strides made in tunneling methodology in the last decade of the 20th Century.

This paper presents the results from the investigation of the application of thermal fragmentation in Australian hard rock underground narrow-vein mining. Two geologically similar samples from an underground narrow-vein hard rock gold mine were collected to obtain a measure of the technology’s ability to recover ore by the creation of large thermal openings to assess the applicability of the thermal method. Particle size distribution showed a higher generation of fine product, − 2 mm, by thermal fragmentation compared with selective blasting by 31%. The Bond work index for thermal ore (12.62 kWh/t) is half to that of the blasted ore value (25.32 kWh/t). The average grindability obtained for the thermal ore sample was greater than the blasted sample by a factor of 2.44, a higher value indicating a decrease in the energy required to grind. The thermal fragmentation method generates product with higher dissolution of gold in cyanide, by 14% for the − 9.5 + 2 mm size fraction samples. Additionally, the thermal fragmentation results in higher production of − 9.5 + 2 mm material by 15 % compared with selective blasting.

Borehole mining (BHM) is a remotely operated method of extracting rock material through boreholes by high-pressure water jets. Figure 1 illustrates a BHM tool and fluids circulation. The tool consists of at least two pipes, one for pumping down high-pressure water, the second for delivering slurry to the surface. This article reviews the BHM process. It discusses current and new applications for borehole mining and help the readers determine if BHM is applicable in their situations. Previous articles in ME about BHM explained either a particular project (ME, April 2001, pp. 33-36) or a newest patent in this area (ME, March 1991, pp. 313-318). However, neither one provided an overview on the modern BHM technology.

INTRODUCTION Soft, near normally consolidated clays generally provide ideal conditions for tunneling using Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) shields. It is easy to turn the clay into a low permeability, viscous spoil that can be pressurized to maintain the required face pres-sure. Despite this, there are records of relatively large, and often quite variable, surface settlements over EPB driven tunnels in soft clay. To understand this variation it is necessary to identify the various factors that contribute to settlement. Tunnels in soft clay are ideal for study these effects in the field, as an unsupported void will close almost immediately, due to the low shear strength of the soil. In the short term, deformation in a soft clay will occur at constant volume, so short term surface settlements can be related to movements at tunnel level. In this paper, data will be used from EPB driven tunnels in Singapore marine clay. In all of the cases discussed the lining consisted of precast concreted segmental rings erected in the tail of the shield. The marine clay in Singapore has been studied, among others, by Tanaka et al.(2001). The clay typically has a plasticity index of 40 to 60, and the undrained shear strength (SU ) can be derived from: SU = 0.22 svo' where svo' is the current vertical effective stress. Figure 1 shows a summary of undrained strength/depth plots used for design on two sections of Singapore’s North East Line. The stability of a tunnel in clay can be assessed by comparing the stability number (N) of the tunnel with the stability number at total collapse (NTC). The stability number can be calculated from the equation: N = (?Z + q – Pt)/SU where: ? = the average unit weight of the ground above the springline of the tunnel Z = the depth to the springline of the tunnel from the ground surface q = the surcharge Pt = the support pressure within the tunnel The stability number at total collapse depends on the size, geometry and depth of the tunnel, and typically ranges between 5 and 9. Charts for assessing the number at total collapse are provided in Kimura and Mair (1981), based on the testing of model tunnels in a geotechnical centrifuge. China’s vibrant economic growth is built on coal, the source of two thirds of the country’s electricity. Over 95 percent of China’s coal is mined underground with the average mining depth at 410 m and in-creasing at 10 m per year; today, the deepest Chinese coal mines have exceeded 1,000 m. With increasing mining depths, there are greater challenges including increased methane emissions and spontaneous combustion. According to the government, nearly half of China’s coal mines are classified as gassy (with specific gas content at least 10 m3/mt). Coalbed methane (CBM) is a clean energy source. However, only a small percentage of the methane is captured, and the rest is vented directly to the atmosphere. This paper describes China’s CBM resource, its production and utilization.

From a vast army of workers to gargantuan machines to immense volumes of material being moved, almost everything about the Port of Miami Tunnel (POMT) project points to tunneling on a massive scale. Almost.The star of this underground and underwater show is a Herrenknecht tunnel boring machine (TBM,) nicknamed ?Harriet? by a local Girl Scout troop. With her 12.9-m- (42.3-ft-) diameter cutting head and a total length of 139 m (457 ft), Harriet is boring through thousands of cubic meters of clay, dirt and sand, which is often mixed with coral and other materials, to create two 1,280-m (4,200-ft) traf?c tunnels connecting Watson Island and the Port of Miami (Dodge Island) beneath Biscayne Bay, FL. But in the midst of all of the oversized equipment and machines, a strong contender for the best supporting nod goes to a relatively tiny machine: the Brokk 400. Bouygues Civil Works Florida crews are using the compact, remote-controlled and electric-powered machine to excavate five cross passages between the twin traffic tunnels. The pas-sages will be essential to the safety of people who drive their vehicles under the bay every day.

Several mineral process modeling and simulation packages are currently available for use in evaluating the performance of alternative process flowschemes. A critical link that has been missing from these packages is the ability to quantitatively model the effect of size reduction on the liberation of the valuable and waste minerals in the ore being processed. Although there have been several approaches taken to this problem over the past 25 years, none has led to a satisfactory conclusion. A technique has been developed for measuring the effective liberation characteristics of magnetic taconite ores, and a program has been constructed which makes use of these liberation characteristics in simultaneously simulating both size reduction and mineral liberation as it occurs in tumbling mills. This is an especially important step in the modeling of magnetic taconite processes, where magnetic rejection of low grade wastes between grinding stages mandates that a predictive capability be available. The current application is specific to magnetic taconite, but it is possible that a similar approach could be used for other types of mineral systems.

Commodity price down cycles are a fact of life in the mining industry. And companies pre-pare for them as best they can. Evenso, operations are still curtailed or closed during those cycles, profits shrink, layoffs are inevitable and many companies do not survive. However, one of the few good things that occurs during down cycles is the new, innovative exploration, mining and processing technologies that come about during hard times. To survive the lean times, the mining industry turns to improved technology to decrease costs and hold the bottom line. And, because mining is a cyclical business, each down cycle brings about technology improvements that carry over into the good times.

Ground freezing was utilized to provide complete stability of the excavation face and complete groundwater cut-off for the jacking of the three tunnel boxes for the Interstate 90 / Interstate 93 approach to the Fort Point Channel crossing. Through a wide range of geological conditions and large buried obstructions, the freezing provided complete stability of the face so that a 11.5 m (38 ft) high free standing vertical face could be mined without the need for any additional face support. Obstructions were incorporated into the massive frozen ground matrix, and held in place so that they could be excavated with a minimum of disturbance. The freezing provided an absolute groundwater cut-off, and permitted the work to be done without disturbance to the active rail system immediately above. With the use of instrumentation such as borehole thermocouples, the effectiveness of the freezing was guaranteed and the jacking proceeded with complete confidence and assurance of the ground conditions ahead.

Safety is the No. 1 concern of any drill contractor or mine operator. Everyone in the industry knows a safe site helps stabilize operational costs and enables higher productivity. When it comes to exploration drilling, research has proven a majority of injuries are caused by the mishandling of coring rods. A driller helper will typically handle up to 50 rods per shift or up to 15,000 rods per year. With an annual 340 t (750,000 lb) in rods managed by hand, the risk of serious injury is extremely high. The Detroit Upper Rouge Tunnel CSO Control Project will capture and store up to 201 MG of combined sewer overflow from 28 outfalls in Detroit, Dearborn Heights and Redford Township during wet-weather events. The history of rock tunneling in the area is associated with high groundwater inflows, artesian pressure, and hazardous and combustible gases. This paper presents the geotechnical considerations for designing the 11.28-km (7-mile) long, 9.14 m (30-ft) finished diameter tunnel and its associated adits, chambers and shafts, including the discussions of geotechnical investigations, rock mass characterization, estimated groundwater infiltration during construction, and the selections of excavation methods and lining system based on anticipated ground behavior to be encountered.

The Peñasquito deposit in Mexico is one of the largest grassroots precious metal discoveries to be developed in recent years. Goldcorp Inc. acquired the gold-silver-lead-zinc property with the acquisition of Glamis in 2006. The company has since committed US$1.5 billion to construct the mine, mill and associated facilities. The first of two 50-kt/d (55,000-stpd) mill and flotation lines is currently being commissioned while engineering and construction continues on the second line. A high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR) will ultimately take total throughput to 130 kt/d (142,000 stpd). The Peñasquito property is located in the northeast corner of Zacatecas state, Mexico. The elevation of the property averages 1,900 m (6,200 ft) above sea level and it is situated in a wide east-west valley. Except for one small outcrop (Peñasquito), the area is covered by up to 30 m (98 ft) of alluvium.

Flooding of open pits now receives considerable attention from the mining industry as an option that may minimize environmental impacts, particularly when anoxia in pit lake deep waters can effectively eliminate oxidation of pit-wall sulphides. A state-of-the-art, coupled physical-geochemical pit lake model is used to verify that a cost-effective, environmentally responsible closure strategy for the open pit at the Kori Kollo gold mine, southeast of La Paz, Bolivia is to adopt a controlled, two-stage infilling of the open pit upon cessation of operations. By filling the pit initially with highly saline waters from evaporation/infiltration basins and naturally saline deep groundwater, followed by capping with fresh river water, a very stable and strongly stratified pit lake will be developed. In addition, the stratification will result in the isolation of metal-rich saline bottom waters from surface waters of good quality. Results of this model provide defensible predictions of the physical stability and evolution of water quality in the Kori Kollo pit lake over time. The model results indicate that anoxic conditions will develop below the fresh-saline water boundary within 1 to 2 years, followed by the rapid onset of sulphate reducing conditions in the bottom waters. Hydrogen sulphide produced by sulphate reduction will readily react with dissolved metals to form highly insoluble metal sulphides. The process results in the gradual removal of metals from the water column and the concomitant improvement of water quality over time. A notable benefit of this strategy is that it can be fully integrated with other mine site closure options as well as future environmental management strategies. The proposed plan allows for: 1) safe storage of saline evaporation basin waters; 2) the potential for passive treatment in anoxic bottom waters of ARD seepages from other mine site operations should they arise; and 3) a repository for future reactive wastes that could be effectively isolated in a physically and chemically stable environment.

INTRODUCTION Construction of the 3,600,000 kilowatt Third Powerplant at Grand Coulee Dam started in late summer 1967 approximately one year after authorization by Congress. The project was made possible by a treaty with Canada providing for cooperative development of the Columbia River which was signed in 1961 and ratified in 1964. Description of the Work The existing Grand Coulee power complex consisted of a dam and two powerplants with a switchyard serving each plant, one on each bank of the river. See Fig. 1. The switching facilities were connected to transformers at the powerplants by overhead 230-kilovolt and 115-kilovolt tie circuit conductors. [ ]

ABB offers complete electrical revamps of mining shovels with ac or dc drives, drive control, frequency converters with insular gate bi-polar transistor technology, intelligent control packages and visualization. Many of the world’s shovel excavators and draglines (walking excavators) were built in the1980s. After 15 to 20 years of round-the clock operation in openpit mines, these machines start to feel their age. Electrical parts are particularly vulnerable. Their performance deteriorates and availability and productivity fall. Even with regular ser-vice and maintenance, a machine of this age will accumulate 400 hours of unscheduled downtime a year. The need for a replacement becomes pressing, but the expense is often prohibitive.
