Owing to the selective oxidation and uneven combustion that occur on the surface of carbon anode, some carbon particles detach and form carbon residue, which is defined as spent anode slag (SAS). The highly graphitized and toxic impurities such as fluorite ( CaF2), corundum (α-Al2O3), and cryolite ( NaAl11O17) are crucial components of SAS resource but are difficult to separate from graphite. This study developed a method of using water-soluble (emulsified) kerosene to separate the carbon particles from the toxic impurities in the SAS resource. The flotation purification approach of utilizing conventional kerosene was experimentally investigated and compared with that of using water-soluble kerosene. The results showed that with the use of emulsified kerosene, the maximum combustible matter recovery of the carbon particles was 89.86% while that of using traditional kerosene was 80.30%. The emulsified kerosene was comprehensively examined by various instruments to clarify its adsorption mechanism on the carbon particle surfaces. Because of the superior dispersibility of emulsified kerosene, it effectively envelops carbon particles with a smooth surface, oxygen-containing functional groups, and hydrophilic C–F bonds, thereby increasing the surface hydrophobicity and flotation responses of targeted carbon particles.

P.T. Freeport Indonesia operates a mining complex located in the highlands of Papua, Indonesia. This district consists of underground and surface operations. The East Ertsberg skarn system (EESS) is one of the major orebodies in this district. Subsurface caving of the EESS has been carried out in a systematic series of mining lifts dating back almost 30 years. Present production from the third lift deep ore zone (DOZ), has reached 80 kt/d (88,000 stpd) during 2010, with this rate sustained through 2015. The orebody was proven below the existing caving level, with the next vertical block called the deep mill level zone (DMLZ).

The hydrometallurgical residue generated during the hydrometallurgical processing of waste automotive catalysts is valuable as a secondary resource. In this study, a process of platinum recovery from the hydrometallurgical residue by high-temperature smelting process was proposed. Results of lab- and pilot-scale experiments show a high recovery of more than 98% of platinum and glass slag was successfully obtained by controlling the Fe3O4 addition, C/Fe3O4 mass ratio, CaO/SiO2 mass ratio, smelting temperature, and holding time at 15 wt%, 0.4, 0.6, 1500 °C, and 120 or 60 min, respectively. Results from the pilot-scale show that the platinum contents in the glass slag and alloys were less than 4 g/t and more than 0.6 wt%, respectively. Therefore, the process proposed in this study is a prospective and effective approach for reutilization of hydrometallurgical residue containing platinum.

Conventional analyses of seepage through saturated media do not apply when tailings impoundments are located above a partially saturated zone. Three stages of seepage are identified and methods for estimating the seepage rates and duration of each stage, based upon flow in partially saturated and saturated porous media, are demonstrated. The effectiveness of earthen liners is discussed and procedures for estimating the required properties of the porous media are provided.

Technical Papers, Mining Engineering Vol. 49, No. 12, pp. 70-75, Discussion by McIvor, R. and Fink, R. P. We must challenge what we consider to be dubious statements in the above-mentioned article. Much of what is reported was published elsewhere over a year ago (i.e., in their reference: Chi, G., Fuerstenau, M.C., Brandt, R.C. and Ghosh, A., 1996, "Improved comminution efficiency through controlled blasting during mining," International Journal of Min¬eral Processing, Vol. 47, p. 93). There is nothing unusual or significant about a 10% or more difference in grindability between two materials of apparently similar origin and other attributes (such as chemical assays, hardness and specific gravity). Consider also that: • the materials came from different locations in the pit; • only two sets of four blastholes were considered per blast: • spatial orientation with respect to the face and other blastholes was also altered; • only two pairs of data were collected; • the impact of sampling error and bias, • both of which could be significant in this case; and • normal experimental error in parameter measurement and calculation. It is clearly inappropriate to draw any conclusions with regard to cause-and-effect relationships without first presenting a thorough error analysis. A substantial number of randomly selected test and control areas might provide meaningful statistical evidence of the claimed effect of the variables being studied. Even that appears doubtful, however, because Figures 3 and 4 show about as much variation in crushing energy for the two "regular" conditions vs. regular and altered conditions. On a separate, but also important issue, broad experience with autogenous/semiautogenous milling has shown that smaller or weaker feed material results in reduced tonnage. ? Reply Thank you for the opportunity to respond to the comments of Messrs. Mclvor ant Fink. The points raised are addressed in the order of presentation. As the commenters noted, there are parallels between this article and a previous manuscript. The reason for these complementary articles is that the audiences for the two publications are different, although there is obviously some overlap. We believe that the different audiences each profit from the technical aspects of the two manuscripts. We are not in agreement that a grindability difference of 10% is insignificant. The laboratory work is corroborated by data obtained at plant scale, which confirms that an increase in throughput of the same magnitude (between 5% and 10%) is achieved when the blasting pattern is modified, i.e., reduced from 9 to 8 m (29.5 to 26.2 ft). This increase in throughput translates into substantial power savings for ore grinding. No differences in appearance in the rock were noted between the two adjacent areas. Rock in both areas belonged to the same rock mass/block, which was quite homogeneous and without geological features in between that could create drastic differences in comminution characteristics. Given the resources, we would have sampled from all of the holes. Additional data would certainly have been desirable, as would have been additional funding to expand the study. Their comment, "spatial orientation with respect to the face and other blastholes was also altered," is not clear. Figure 1 does not show the initiation sequence. Without the initiation sequence, we do not understand how the commenters concluded that spatial orientation with respect to the face and other blastholes was altered. This study compares wet gravity and dry magnetic separation for preconcentrating an allanite-rich rare earth ore from the Halleck Creek deposit. Material in the –300/+86 μm size range was treated to define a flowsheet that maximizes total rare earth oxide (TREO) recovery. The ore is dominated by feldspar and quartz, with hastingsite, an iron-bearing aluminosilicate. Because hastingsite’s density and magnetic response closely match allanite, it is difficult to reject using conventional methods. Two separation approaches were evaluated: MG12 spirals for gravity concentration and an Induced Roll Magnetic Separator (IRMS) for dry magnetic upgrading. MG12 spirals performed well in the rougher stage but provided limited gains when used as cleaners. When IRMS was applied as the cleaner stage, TREO grade and recovery improved substantially, showing that a dry magnetic cleaner circuit can effectively replace the wet gravity cleaner step. MG12 spirals remain suitable for highcapacity rougher duty, but dry magnetic separation delivers higher selectivity, simpler operation, and eliminates water use—offering a more efficient and sustainable preconcentration route in water-constrained environments.

This paper describes the development of a life-of-mine schedule (LOM) for one of the world's largest known sedimentary copper-cobalt districts located in the Katanga Province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). A particular feature of the Tenke Fungurume LOM schedule is the considerable number of pits/phases for scheduling, each competing to provide the best ore available to a capacity-constrained process facility. This paper discusses the LOM scheduling objectives and constraints, data preprocessing steps such as ore binning, block aggregation and clustering analysis as a scheduling aid, the mine scheduling approach and results and conclusions. A team of researchers at the University of Kentucky, working under a USBM contract, developed over 65 simulation exercises for teaching and testing problem-solving and decision-making skills to miners and mining engineers. These skills involve both improving judgment and decision making in mine emergencies and enhancing the learning of real-world engineering design principles. The exercises are ideally suited for either latent image format or for computer-aided instruction. Exercise features are summarized, the structure and field testing of typical exercises described, and sample frames of individual exercises presented. Empirical data are summarized that describe the effectiveness of using these short, time-efficient performance tasks that simulate real problems and that provide immediate corrective feedback for teaching and testing critical skills. The technology of automatically formed roadway without pillars (AFRP) via roof cutting and pressure releasing (RCPR) is a reformatory method for gob-side entry retaining, which automatically creates a roadway by utilizing the fragmenting and expanding properties of rock strata and the mining pressure, to realize a novel technique for coal mining without coal pillars. The Anju Coal Mine is the first kilometer-deep mine where this technology is applied. To conduct a geomechanical model experiment, this research uses the 5307 working face in this mine as its backdrop. The experimental results show that this technology can efficiently decrease the pressure of the AFRP surrounding rock. The roof maximum stress of the AFRP is 21% lower than that of the belt roadway, while the side abutment pressure of the former is 13.4% lower than that of the latter. The comparison of model experiment data and field monitoring data shows that the roof and floor approaching deformations on the roof-cutting side and solid coal side of AFRP differ by 8.8% and 9.6%, respectively. The model experiment results and field monitoring data show good agreement, and the deformation of the AFRP surrounding rock can be successfully managed by this technique. The study’s findings can serve as a guide for using this technology in kilometer-deep coal mines.

Diamonds in Namibia The mining industry is one of the three pillars of the Namibian economic development, along with tourism and fishing. Diamond mining is one of the two main mining activities in Namibia and diamond mining operations are rapidly moving from onshore to offshore deposits. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the current and future situation of the Namibian mining industry, with a special focus on the tasks and new technical developments for the successful excavation of beach and marine diamond deposits. The different deposits and the adequate applied mining technologies and methods are shown in examples.

The intent of this paper is to provide overview context to allow broader understanding of conventional tailings dam failure mechanisms. The research leverages global knowledge, experience, and data collection and interpretation for the safe and controlled management of the geotechnical stability of a tailings storage facility. The motivation for this review is to facilitate transparent access to tailings dam background and understanding. This paper addresses the core understanding of geotechnical failure mechanisms, and how these eventuate to instability and failure of tailings dam structures. This research focuses on foundation failure, internal erosion and piping, overtopping, seepage, seismicity, and slope instability and provides insight into what factors contribute to failure, how failure progresses due to such failure, anticipating and monitoring for the aforementioned failure modes, and designing to mitigate their risk.

A pilot plant was constructed and operated to investigate the column flotation of 20 x 200 mesh North Carolina phosphate ore, using high throughput, high solids operating conditions developed at the NCSU Minerals Research Laboratory. Flotation was performed at 45% solids in a 9.5 cm (3.75 in.) diameter by 2.26 m (7.4 ft.) tall column at throughputs of 19.1 t/hr/m2 (2.0 stph/ft2) and 31.7 t/hr/m2 (3.3 stph/ft2). Recoveries in excess of 98% of the phosphate value were obtained at the lower throughput -- while obtaining concentrate grades containing over 28% P205 (61.2% BPL) at that recovery. Recoveries of about 95% of the phosphate value were obtained at the higher throughput, while making a concentrate averaging 27.6% P209 (60.3% BPL). In addition, a better understanding of the variables governing the column flotation of coarse nonmetallic minerals was gained. Low air flow rates adversely affected concentrate grade at the lower throughput. At the higher throughput, phosphate recovery decreased at an elevated air flow rate. An unexpected result of the study was the effect that frother type had upon phosphate metallurgy. Use of Nottingham Econofroth 925 provided better flotation selectivity than American Cyanamid F-65 at the low throughput. This is significant since the high' throughput tests were conducted with F-65 exclusively. It is reasonable to expect further improvement in high throughput performance when the optimal frother type and dosage are determined.

Recent antipollution legislation for the control of mine tailings and waste-water has required an increasing number of tailings ponds. Many of these new waste-retention ponds are being constructed in congested locations, or the older ponds have reached such a size that--if failure occurs--they pose a threat to human life and public property. Although the typical tailings-disposal embankment represents--to the casual-, observer or the economy-minded mine official--a rather ugly but benign and stable pile of waste, they are in fact an extremely sensitive structural mass, retained behind the frailest of dikes. Failure of the waste mass requires only a minor change in water retention or weather conditions, erosion or piping of the ground strata, shifts in load or slight earth tremors. When failures occur, the results can be disastrous. In the U.S., we have been fortunate that, so far, pond failures have not caused loss of life. Thus, failures in this country have attracted little public attention. Present tailings-pond construction methods used by the mining industry require the barest money investment, and little engineering effort. Unfortunately, this superficial approach may increase short-term profits, but the practice may be conducive to the construction of needlessly weak structures. In coming years many of these designs will probaly become corporate liabilities. A typical pond is portrayed in Figure IA. This particular pond in Arizona is 1 mile long and 3/4 mile wide. The Tennessee Valley Authority began employing geophysical well logging for foundation investigations in October 1973. Since that time more than 3,000 holes have been evaluated for engineering purposes. The Tennessee Valley Authority has not actively used geo-physical well logging for exploration of construction materials, but we feel that much of the information derived from geophysical logs for foundation exploration is applicable to the construction materials industry. This paper will then discuss geophysical logging as applied to foundation engineering and, by implication, the feasibility of use in construction materials exploration. The use of geophysical logging and percussion drilling instead of coring has greatly expanded TVA's data acquisition capabilities and has also resulted in substantial savings in time and money. Economical boreholes are obtained through the use of large percussion track drills (Figure 1). This equipment is capable of drilling through the overburden, setting steel casing on the top of rock, and drilling the rock beneath the casing. Holes as deep as 400 feet (121.9 m) have been drilled by this method.

This paper explains and discusses a computer program developed to determine the ventilation design parameters for complex auxiliary ventilation systems such as those found in the construction of long excavations with multiple headings. The program is based on the principle of partitioning the system into segments of finite length, and formulating and solving the resulting networks recursively. The application of the program is illustrated by the detailed solution of an auxiliary ventilation system proposed for the Exploratory Studies Facility (ESF) at the Yucca Mountain project, Nevada.

Diesel particulate matter (DPM) has been shown to contribute to various adverse health effects on underground miners. In order to reduce worker exposures, it is critical to measure the levels of DPM in the active work settings and in real time. However, the 5040 method, developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), which quantifies the mass of elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) in the samples, is based on full-shift samples, and can take days or even weeks for results. Use of real-time monitors could significantly reduce the risk of DPM exposure to miners, and available monitors have been shown to quantify DPM, mainly using the EC and other surrogates. The NIOSH Spokane Mining Research Division is conducting research aimed at developing a field-portable DPM monitor that is able to quantify both EC and OC. One part of this work is to understand the effect of OC on currently available real-time DPM monitors. This paper will present the results from experiments that were designed to observe the effect of OC on real time monitors and compare the results with the NIOSH 5040 method. BACKGROUND Diesel engines remain ubiquitous in mining environments and, as such, are one of the primary sources of ultrafine- and nano-aerosols in the mining environment in the form of diesel particulate matter (DPM). As a result of their small size, DPM has longer residence times in a mine atmosphere than the typically larger mechanically generated dust [1]. In addition, the small size enables DPM to penetrate deeply into the respiratory system [1], and exposure to DPM has been shown to contribute to various adverse health outcomes of the pulmonary system [2] and cardiovascular system [3]. Diesel exhaust has been classified as a carcinogen to humans (Group 1) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer [4]. Due to mounting concern about adverse health outcomes, extensive efforts are being made to reduce workers’ exposure to DPM, with the high exposures that often occur in underground mines being of particular concern [5]. New technologies are being developed to reduce engine emissions and thereby airborne DPM levels, including advanced engine technologies, a host of aftertreatment systems [6], and a variety of alternative fuels. The latter have been shown to markedly decrease respirable DPM and other hazardous components of diesel emissions from mining vehicles [7], yet high exposures persist, especially in underground mines [8]. In order to reduce worker exposures, it is critical to measure the levels of DPM in active work settings. In mine settings, exposures to DPM are measured by collecting air samples on filters (usually full-shift samples) and sending them to a lab for analysis using the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) P13 method, a variant of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) 5040 method. The 5040 method is designed to quantify the mass of elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) on the samples [9], which is then used to determine the concentration in the sampled air. MSHA has set a limit for exposure, which is based on the concentration of total carbon (TC), or the sum of both EC and OC. The allowable TC in the air (time-weighted average over the shift) is 160 μg/m3 of TC [10].

Three transportation systems in surface coal mines: 1-Truck Haulage, 2-Belt Conveying, and 3-Coarse-Coal Slurry Transportation are compared from the operations and cost point of Views. Computerized design and cost models were developed and cost data banks were compiled for each system. These models can be used to evaluate transportation systems and layouts that are practiced in most of the U.S. surface coal mines. A typical midwestern area strip mine was considered for illustration purposes. Sensitivity analysis on critical parameters such as production rate, transportation, distance, etc. was conducted and the outcomes are presented.

"Slope performance monitoring, dependable operational practices and ongoing collection of geologic data in openpit slopes all provide valuable information for quantifying potential steepening of subsequent slopes. Mining at the Goldstrike openpit has been ongoing since the early 1980s, having its share of slope instabilities. In areas where slopes have remained stable, consideration has been made for potential slope steepening of final walls.While technology can be efficient, interesting for collecting needed data, slope design fundamentals based on that data can be applied to create much added value.With the proper available equipment, steepening of bench face angles via presplit blasting is not an uncommon method for steepening of interramp slope angles. As an alternative at Goldstrike, the commonly used Modified Ritchie Criteria for empirical catch bench width has been adjusted, resulting in quantified, rock-specific formulas for bench width and rock fall berm placement. The result is an inter-ramp slope angle increase of 2° on a 305- m (1,000-ft) high slope, without the necessary purchases and procedural changes that would be required for presplit drilling and blasting. The result has shown significant net benefits through reduction in mined waste tons and an increase in gold reserves.LocationThe Goldstrike openpit is located in the Great Basin, on the northern end of the Carlin Trend gold belt in northeastern Nevada (Fig. 1). The mine has produced more than 1.2 kt (43 million oz) of gold during the past 30 years."

In late 1989, LAC Minerals purchased 65% of Bond International Gold and as a result became controlling shareholder of the El Indio Mine through Bond and San Jose. El Indio is a world class, complex sulphide gold deposit located in the hydrothermal alteration belt of the Andes mountains in the 4th Region of Chile. The mine is located in the high Andes about 185 km east of La Serena at an elevation of 4000 meters. The 1450 workers at El Indio live in the mine camp at 3200 m and on days off are bussed to La Serena. The El Indio mine was started in 1979 by St. Joe Minerals Corp., bought by Bond in 1987 and subsequently by LAC in 1989. The mine has produced 2.7 million oz. of gold, 9. 5 million oz. of silver and 170,000 t of copper since start of operation. The mill is currently operating at a rate of 2850 t/d and producing a copper/gold concentrate which is roasted to produce a copper/gold calcine and high quality, saleable crude As203• A small proportion of the precious metals are also produced as bullion from the leach circuit. Total production during 1989 was 224,197 ounces of gold, 1,309,342 ounces of silver and 26,968 tonnes of copper. The average cash cost of production for the period was U.S. $96 per ounce of gold, net of by-product credits. The average realized price was $5.30 per ounce of silver and $1.14 per pound of copper.

It appears that the tunneling trade is merging into its own renaissance for the decade of the 1970s', and most likely on past the year 2001. Federal interest in underground excavation, and more specifically, rapid excavation expertise has been on the upswing since the latter part of the 1960's, mainly due to the pressing national needs for more raw materials based on the rise for material goods and the projective gloom of possible power shortages. On the pure tunneling side the national needs encompass, in the mainstream of priorities, rapid transportation and water supply excavation as the two top contenders. For instance, the estimates for tunnel mileage for the period 1968-1975 are:(1) Subways---85 miles Urban Highways--- 123 miles Intercity Highways---210 miles Water Supply Routes---528 miles at a total of 946 miles of tunnels. The estimated cumulative underground excavation demand in dollar amounts for the period 1970-1989 are:(1) Construction Oriented Demand--- $35 billions Mining Oriented Demand---$34 billions (which includes the coal-oriented demand on the order of 26 billions.
