Historically, mine ventilation practices as it was referred to then and which was enforced by legislation of those days, focused primarily on the conditions in the working place and little attention given to actual exposures of workers to contaminants in the working environments. With the advent of the Leon Commission of Inquiry into Safety and Health in the South African Mining industry in 1994, findings in the report indicated that more attention should be given to occupational health of workers. The upshot of this report resulted in the promulgation of the new Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) with certain sections of it devoted to all the aspects of occupational medicine and occupational hygiene. This paper describes the present situation with regards to statistics on occupational hygiene performance and compensation paid out to persons who have contracted occupational diseases, as well as the way forward in terms of legislation implemented in September 2002 on the chronic and acute issues affecting the mining industry in SA.

Mining has always been, and still is, an activity which is vital for the development of mankind. This is because a predominant proportion of industrial products and energy is produced from raw materials that are excavated using mining methods. The need for environmental protection and the close proximity of urban settlements and mines in Slovenia have necessitated ever stricter requirements for the excavation of raw materials and the introduction of more environmentally-friendly mining methods. This is achieved by implementing a closed eco-technological cycle of raw material excavation within the scope of mining methods. In surface mines, this means prompt reclamation of the degraded surfaces, and in underground mines the use of methods with minimized impact on the surface and on underground water. In underground mines, mining methods with backfilling installed according to the multi-barrier disposal system are the only ones that allow the possibility of implementing a closed eco-techno-logical cycle of excavating raw materials. Various industrial waste materials are also included in the backfilling material in order to improve its strength properties. Backfilling consisting of several different waste materials is produced in the form of a composite. Before backfilling consisting of waste material composites can even begin to be used in mines, an environmental impact assessment of its suitability for mines needs to be made. In order to make such an assessment, a pressure leaching cell and an open diffusion cell were made, i.e. a pressure leachate test and a sorption test were developed. The two cells and the developed tests will enable the study of the influence of backfilling on the environment if installed in an underground mine. The pressure leachate test performed with the use of the pressure leaching cell simulates leaching from a consolidated backfill during the seeping of underground water into the backfilling material under pressure. The sorption test performed in an open diffusion cell simulates the flow of eluate leached from the backfilling material through the rock/geotechnical barrier. The two tests were developed in such a manner that they are performed either in succession immediately after one another, but they can also be performed separately at a certain time interval. The paper presents an assessment of the suitability of backfilling made of different waste material composites. The thermal properties of manganese raw materials such as ores, sinters, and briquettes, are among the many factors that determine the amount of energy needed for processing. Thermal expansion, thermal diffusivity, conductivity, and apparent specific heat capacity of solid samples and compacted powder samples of manganese ores were examined from room temperature to 1000 °C. The effect of porosity (of the materials used) on the thermal properties was also investigated. The laser flash method and a pushrod dilatometer were used.

Laboratory bias is a universal problem in all branches of analytical science. It results from differences in methods, techniques, equipment, and calibrations between laboratories. Notwithstanding that it is a property that can be measured by the use of standards or by inter-laboratory testing, laboratory bias remains a material issue for the mining industry. There is extensive literature and clear guidelines on measurement from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and its worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies) and from the science of metrology. ISO guides cover the manufacture and use of standards. An accessible source of literature covering laboratory quality control comes from the public health sector, particularly pathology. There is little doubt in financial reporting rules about the meaning of materiality. Public reporting guidelines are clear that material matters need to be disclosed for investors. Unfortunately there is currently no clear guidance what to do about biased assay results in mineral industry public reporting guidelines. This paper reviews the requirements for the manufacture and use of reference materials, public reporting requirements in the mining industry, and presents proposals to improve management and reporting of laboratory biases. This paper will focus on two topics, namely (1) an innovative process for the neutralization and partial sulphate removal of acid streams produced during coal mining and processing and (2)optimization of this integrated neutralization process by adding small amounts of synthetic organic polymers. The integrated lime and limestone process has been developed to neutralize acid mine water and to remove sulphate (to less than1 200 mg/l), magnesium and metals. Limestone and lime treatment is the most cost-effective technology for neutralization and partial sulphate removal of acidic/sulphate-rich water to sulphate levels of less than 1 500 mg/l due to precipitation of magnesium and removal of the associated sulphate fraction (through gypsum crystallization). Neutralized mine water of this quality may be suitable for irrigation. The process consists of the following stages: 1. Limestone (CaCO3) neutralization to raise the pH to 7 and CO2-production. 2. Lime (Ca(OH)2) treatment to pH 12 for Mg(OH)2precipi-tation and gypsum (CaSO4.2H2O) crystallization. 3. pH adjustment with CO2recovered from stage 1 and CaCO3 precipitation. Retention times of 1 hour, 4 hours and 1/2an hour were required by stages 1, 2, and 3 respectively. The sulphate level was reduced to 1 094 mg/l, which is less than the original aim of 1 200mg/l. Chemical costs associated with neutralization, using limestone instead of lime, are reduced by 69% in the integrated limestone/lime process. The overflow water from the clarifier of each of the above stages generally contains a wide variety of colloidal impurities that may cause the water to appear turbid or may impart colour. This results in very slow sludge settling rates that cause overflow water with a high degree of turbidity and colour. There are a number of successive or simultaneous stages involved in the agglomeration of particles. To get optimum neutralisation of the acid water and partial sulphate removal to below the saturation level of gypsum (i.e. 1 500mg/l), maximum sludge recovery is needed. The higher the concentration of seed crystals, the larger the surface area. Therefore, effective removal of suspended and colloidal matter from the overflow of each stage is required and can be achieved by coagulation and flocculation. The polymers PAC6 and 3095 were effectively used as coagulant and flocculant respectively. The addition of these polymers resulted in a clear overflow in each of the above stages with a very low turbidity.

Pipelines are used extensively in industry to convey various products. Internal corrosion of pipelines can lead to perforation and leakage of the product. A growing problem, not often accurately recognized, is internal corrosion of pipelines caused by bacteria. Microbiologically-induced corrosion (MIC) refers to corrosion caused by a variety of micro-organisms. This form of corrosion is not widely recognized in many industries, although it is widespread and causes many corrosion problems in pipelines, both internal and external. Sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) are responsible for the bulk of the corrosion problems caused by MIC. Corrosion caused by SRB is found extensively in water pipelines conveying raw, potable and waste water, as well as in pipelines conveying slurries. This problem also occurs in pipelines conveying crude oil. This paper describes internal corrosion problems of slurry pipelines caused by bacteria and outlines mitigation methods to improve slurry pipeline integrity, thereby extending the life of such pipeline

Titania slag is used as feedstock in the production of titanium dioxide pigment. It (titania slag) is the product of ilmenite smelting,a process whereby ilmenite is reduced at high temperature utilizing anthracite as a reducing agent. Although various slag tapping configurations are employed throughout the ilmenite smelting industry, the method of tapping the slag from the furnace into bell shaped cast steel pots, was the subject of investigation in this study. The paper describes the formulation of a cooling model used to calculate and subsequently predict the temperature profile of a slagblock during its cooling within the various cooling environments of pot cooling, air cooling and water cooling. The model was calibrated against actual internal slag temperature measurements and verified with information obtained from both pilot and industrial scale blocks. The paper concludes with solidification results and their practical implication.

Tin plating operations are of a complex nature due to the many operational variables that need to be controlled in order to create a product of required quality. The work in this report lays the basics for the control of a halogen plating operation based on the DuPont tinplating set-up with regard to the chemical make-up of the plating solution, as well as operational variables such as temperature and current density. To evaluate these aspects of the process, a rotating cathode Hull-cell set-up was used. This allowed for a laboratory scale plating arrangement that simulates industry closely with regard to chemical and hydro-dynamic considerations. Typical industry accepted standards were obtained for the values of operational variables and a ?baseline? test was conducted employing these standards. All subsequent tests conducted were benchmarked against this baseline result. A large suite of results was obtained in which it was found that changes could be made to the industry accepted norm which would improve on the stability of the operation and therefore the quality of the final tin-plated product. Examples of these results are: an increase in stannous tin concentration, an increase in sodium chloride concentration and a slightly elevated plating temperature. In addition, conditions were found that must be avoided to prevent instability and poor product quality.

Behaviour studies of metal dusting processes and associated filamentous carbon formation were undertaken on Alloys 600, 601, and 800 using a simulated metal dusting environment of 25C0-70H2-5H20 (vol.%) at 650°C. These samples were studied visually and by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), transmission electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (TEM-EDX) and x-ray diffraction (XRD). Visual examination and SEM surface observation showed that Alloy 800 suffered metal dusting attack at an early exposure reaction period. The coke deposit amounts increased significantly with reaction time from 168 hours to 336 hours in Alloys 600, 601, and 800. Alloy 800 showed pitting after 168 hours' exposure, and the degree of pitting increased after 336 hours. XRD showed all these alloys had a common austenitic phase, with Alloy 800 also having ferritic metal particles. Alloy 800 after 168 hours' exposure had a complex phase mixture on the surface, consisting of ferritic Fe and austenitic FeNi phases. For coke deposit, there were also Fe304, Fe3C and graphitic carbon. The existence of Fe, Ni, and Cr metal particles, and also graphitic carbon in coke deposits, was confirmed by EDX analyses.

This paper describes the survey monitoring processes at Venetia, which are discussed under visual inspections, ad hoc investigations, system monitoring and slope stability radar monitoring. This is followed by a description of the main survey monitoring methods. The next section briefly states typical problems, i.e. the atmospheric corrections required to adjust total station distances, maintenance of the system and management of the monitoring process. The paper ends with some important lessons that could be applied to similar monitoring programmes. These lessons are firstly, communication is most important, process a vital part of the system, a champion must take responsibility for the programme and system planning ensures that the monitoring results are needs driven.

Titanium nitride in upgraded nitrided ilmenite (bulk of iron removed) can selectively be chlorinated to produce titanium tetrachloride. Except for iron, most other components present during this low temperature (ca. 200°C) chlorination reaction will not react with chlorine. It is therefore necessary to remove as much iron as possible from the nitrided ilmenite. Hydrochloric acid leaching is a possible process route to remove metallic iron from nitrided ilmenite without excessive dissolution of species like titanium nitride and calcium oxide. Calcium oxide dissolution results in unrecoverable acid consumption. The leachability of nitrided ilmenite in hydrochloric acid was evaluated by determining the dissolution of species like aluminium, calcium, titanium and magnesium in a batch leach reactor for 60 minutes at 90°C under reflux conditions. The hydrochloric acid concentration (11%, 18% and 25%), initial acid-to-iron mole ratio (2:1, 2.5:1 and 3.3:1), and solid-to-liquid mass ratio (1:8.33 to 1:2.13) were varied. The results indicate that a hydrochloric acid concentration of 25 wt% supplied in a 2:1 acid-to-iron mole ratio would produce the most favourable upgraded nitrided ilmenite product. The dissolution of iron in this solution reached 97 per cent after only 60 minutes. The total dissolution of calcium and titanium species was 0.01 and 0.11 wt% respectively. Hydrochloric acid can therefore be used as lixiviant to remove metallic iron from nitrided ilmenite. Surface properties of metal sulphides have a great significance in various areas of engineering and science, such as acid mine drainage, contaminant sorption, and metal separation. In various attempts at producing metal sulphide particles from synthetic solutions, prodigious quantities of nuclei that grow only to colloidal dimensions have been frequently reported. This copious nucleation is promoted by the high levels of supersaturation that characterize most precipitation reactions. Colloidal particle formation in precipi¬tation-based separation processes results in sub-optimal solid-liquid separation, which is alleviated by the production of more highly crystalline particles or agglomerates. The current work approaches this challenge from an electrochemistry perspective, by measuring surface charge potential of precipitant particles during metal sulphide precipitation with respect to the concentration of metal sulphide lattice ions in solution. Electrophoresis was used to measure the metal sulphide particle zeta potential and the settling properties were obtained by performing settleability measurements using an Imhoff settling cone. A suspension of copper sulphide particles was precipitated from synthetic solutions of copper and sulphide ions at equimolar concentrations. Immediately after precipitation the copper sulphide particles had a zeta potential of -50 mV and a settleability of about 7 ml.l-1. With the addition of copper ions the settleability increased by a factor of nearly three times and the zeta potential also increased to a maximum of -40 mV. A decrease in zeta potential to a minimum of -60 mV was observed after the addition of sulphide ions and this was associated with a settleability of 0 ml.l-1.

Titanium sponge, which is almost pure titanium, is extremely ductile and not easily processed into titanium powder. One method of producing powder is the hydride-dehydride (HDH) process, where titanium sponge is hydrided to form brittle titanium hydride (TiH2). Titanium hydride is easily milled to produce powder and is then dehydrided to form Ti powder. In this work, titanium hydride powder obtained from titanium sponge was used as a starting material for blending and mechanical alloying with elemental powders. Firstly, titanium hydride powder was blended with aluminium elemental powder to produce a homogenized powder, which was then compacted and sintered to produce powder metallurgy compacts. Secondly, titanium hydride powder was mechanically alloyed with aluminium elemental powder and then compacted. The mechanically alloyed powder was characterized in terms of particle size distribution, morphology and microstructure. In both blending and mechanical alloying, the green compacts were characterized by assessing the green density, while the sintered compacts were characterized by their sintered density, microstructure, and hardness. The two processes have resulted in the formation of TiA13 intermetallic compound. It was established that by simple mixing and homogenizing, titanium hydride can be used as a starting material to produce powder metallurgy components in which porosity is a benefit rather than a problem, much akin to metallic foams. From the products obtained in the TiHz-Al system, it appears that titanium hydride can be used as a precursor in mechanical alloying. However, the possible formation of complex hydrides may introduce detrimental properties, and needs to be further investigated. For the production of non-porous components, it would be advisable to dehydrogenate the TiH2 powder before milling i.e. producing titanium powder by the hydride-dehydride (HDH) method. The latter half of the 20th century has seen the proliferation of a series of codes to address commodity needs which were brought about by rapidly advancing technologies and the globalization of markets and consumerism. This paper addresses the specific needs and the origin of this surge and presents these codes in the context in which they were developed. It also compares the main codes or groups of codes and elaborates upon their strengths and weaknesses. Three main categories of codes are identified, namely codes for reporting to international agencies, codes addressing government needs and, finally, codes for the investors and the stock market. Codes governed by international agencies usually relate to strategic commodities which have highly specialized fields of usage such as nuclear power generation where international cooperationis eventually the only viable approach for both the development of technologies and their applications. Codes for reporting to governments address the necessity of each state to exploit its mineral potential profitably and to secure the preservation of wealth for future generations. Reporting to investors is experiencing a considerable popularity as of late because of globalization in mining and the growing need for outside financing of mining projects, whose capital requirements are getting out of reach for the average mid-cap mining company. All these codes have advantages and shortcomings dictated by the specific circumstances under which they were developed, therefore necessitating the definition and implementation of some kind of international standard whereby investments and the spread of information across political boundaries would be facilitated. Though none of these codes might ever become international in the true sense of the word because of significantly different legislations at national level, a step that would greatly contribute to the cross-border disclosure of information would be the reciprocal recognition of competent persons by the major mining countries, including China and Russia. It is also becoming essential that financial institutions and investors be properly advised on mining projects by reporting reserves and resources in a transparent and responsible way with the relevant public disclosures being compiled by professionals who take full responsibility for their submissions. Application of Gy?s formula is appropriate for calculation of the Fundamental Error (FE) prior to samples being collected at any stage of the minerals process, provided that sampling parameters K and a (alpha) have been determined by calibration of the ores. Two types of calibration procedure are well established in the industry, the Hetrogeneity test and the 32-piece sampling tree experiment. The sampling tree experiment uses the variance and average grade of metal analyses from four series of samples at different nominal fragment size, as the basic input data. Pierre Gy suggested the cube as an appropriate exponent of the nominal fragment size for use in his equation. More recent work suggests that this exponent is variable and characteristic of specific ores and therefore requires calibration. The method described here explains the experimental procedure of the calibration. It is then possible to calculate a sampling nomogram using the sampling parameters K and a. This allows the sampler to determine a suitable protocol for the sampling event that will ensure that the FE does not exceed a predetermined precision at any point in the sampling procedure.

Titanium can exist in three different oxidation states. Its oxides are numerous and in presence of iron and oxygen, iron-titanium oxide compounds can also form. Some of the oxides are non-stoichiometric, making the determination of the thermodynamic properties of titanium and its oxides in molten steel and in slag difficult. Therefore, for the assessment of titanium activity in molten steel using the electrochemical measurements of oxygen partial pressure, the identification of oxides in equilibrium with titanium is important. This paper reports on an investigation of solid titanium oxide inclusions, which have been identified by combining different methods of analysis on quenched samples. These samples were taken from a Fe-Ti-melt at 1600°C, quenched in cold water then mounted and polished for optical microscopy. The oxide inclusions were analysed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Both single crystal and polycrystalline diffraction patterns were used to identify the oxides by comparing the d spacings with those in the ICDD X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) database. XRD was used to analyse the oxide particles on the top of slow cooled samples. It was found in the TEM study that the similarity of the diffraction patterns of the various phases meant that unique identification was difficult to achieve in some of the diffraction patterns. However, TiO, Ti2O3, Ti3O5, Ti4O7were identified in quenched samples, while TiO2, FeO.TiO2and iron oxides were seen in slow cooled samples. This paper analyses the impact of the uncertainty associated with the input parameters in a mine planning optimization model. A real example was considered to aid in the building of a mathematical model that represents the coal production process with reference to the mining, processing, and marketing of coal. This model was optimized using the linear programming concept whereby the best solution was perturbed by the stochastic behaviuor of one of the main parameters involved in the production process. The analysis of the results obtained permitted an evaluation of the risk associated with the best solution due to the uncertainty in the input parameters.

When Oryx Mine down-scaled in 1994, focus was placed on development, with the primary aim being the exposure and proving of ore reserves. In order to achieve this aim, development ends had to be advanced to reef at the maximum possible rate. This in turn called for support methods which could keep up with the advancing faces, taking up minimum space and time for installation, while providing on the face a real coverage and effective long-term support. In the majority of the development ends which were located in fairly competent ground, the grouted rod development support proved to be adequate until such time as secondary support in the form of meshing and lacing could be installed. The ends developing towards the eastern boundary of the mine, especially in the ?C? block, encountered extremely adverse ground conditions due to the presence of smectite zones within the footwall quartzites. Smectites are a group of montmorillonite clay materials, mainly composed of hydrous aluminosilicates. They occur as minute platy crystals in the rock mass and are especially notable for their ability to absorb liquids. Generally, the zones are found in between the bedding planes of the host rock, and may vary considerably in thickness over short distances. Wherever the smectites were exposed by the development blasting, the rockwalls weathered as the smectites absorbed water and the condition of the tunnel rockwalls deteriorated rapidly. When the smectites were left exposed and allowed to weather, it became almost impossible to install secondary permanent support such as meshing and lacing at a later stage. To minimise the exposure time and subsequent deterioration of the smectite zones, it was recommended that all development ends encountering smectites be shotcreted as soon as possible after blasting. In developing a shotcreting support methodology, both a drycreting and wetcreting system were investigated. The situation at the time ruled out the use of a wetcreting system on the basis of the extensive and costly infrastructure required, as well as its limited manoeuverability. Instead, it was decided to opt for as maller scale but more manoeuverable drycreting system. The system utilized a number of portable drycrete machines with pre-bagged cement, which could support several development ends in close proximity. Initial trials using normal 30 MPa shotcrete on 19level proved successful and the system was implemented.

"In July of 2016 and June 2017, major tap-hole repairs were carried out during the annual shutdown of two 63 MVA submerged arc furnaces producing ferrochromium in South Africa. The hot excavations of the tap-holes allowed for a study of the wear profiles. Subsequent thermodynamic calculations allowed for the quantification of the potential for chemical reaction between refractory and slag or alloy contributing to wear in the tap-hole area. Results from both wear profiling and thermodynamic calculations are reported here. IntroductionFerrochrome (FeCr) is an essential alloy in the production of stainless steel (Gasik, 2013). In 2017, 11.7 Mt of FeCr was produced (Pariser et al., 2018.). The main producers were China (39%), South Africa (29%), Kazakstan (12%), and India (8%).A number of grades of FeCr are available to producers of stainless steel, including high-carbon ferrochrome (HCFeCr) (Gasik, 2013). HCFeCr typically contains 60–70% Cr and 4–6% C (Basson and Daavittila, 2013). When the chromium content is lower (50–55% Cr) and the carbon content higher (6–8% C), it is referred to as charge chrome. Charge chrome is typically produced in South Africa due to the grades of ore available.FeCr is produced in submerged arc furnaces (SAFs) and in open arc furnaces (Mc Dougall, 2013) by carbothermic reduction of oxide raw materials. In a SAF the electrode tips are submerged in a porous charge mix. In FeCr production, the electrical energy is mainly liberated by resistive heating of the wet coke bed (Barker et al., 2007; Steenkamp et al., 2017). Thermally conductive lining design philosophies are typically applied in SAFs producing FeCr (Steenkamp, Denton, and Hayman, 2017; Coetzee, Duncanson, and Sylven, 2010; Coetzee et al., 2010).In July of 2016 and June of 2017, major tap-hole repairs were carried out during the annual shutdown of two 63 MVA SAFs producing FeCr in South Africa. The hot excavations of the tap-holes allowed for a study of the wear profiles. Both SAFs were operated on the same site, by two different operating crews, using the same raw materials. The major difference between them was that the SAF excavated in 2016 was an open SAF (referred to as Furnace A) and the one excavated in 2017 was a closed SAF (referred to as Furnace B). In an open SAF, a gap exists between the top of the steel shell and the roof, with the top of the burden being open to the atmosphere and the CO-rich off-gas being combusted as it escapes. In a closed SAF, the roof is attached to the steel shell and the CO-rich off-gas is collected from an offtake on the roof for further treatment and used in downstream processes.The paper presented here reports the macro-scale observations on refractory wear for the two SAFs, and studies the potential for chemical wear of refractory by slag and alloy as a potential contributing factor to the tap-hole wear observed."

The increased attention towards reducing emissions of fossil CO2 due to its potential global warming effect has resulted in a focus on renewable resources, as charcoal. Since charcoal is produced from growing wood it does not contribute to global warming. This paper gives a brief review of consequences of and reasons for using charcoal in the silicomanganese (SiMn) production. Results are presented from practical SiMn smelting experiments, on a pilot scale, using charcoal as reduction material and comparing with coke.
