The present study investigates the feasibility of using some materials as start-up slags for the extraction of magnesium metal from Egyptian dolomite ores by the Magnethermic technique. The reduction of roasted dolomite (dolime) takes place in a closed evacuated electric arc furnace (small Magnetherm reactor) using ferrosilicon as a reducing agent and liquid start-up slag as a reduction bath under an inert atmosphere. The operational parameters affecting the stabilization of the start-up slag composition and the extraction of magnesium such as reducing agent stoichiometry, reduction temperature, and time were investigated. The dolomitic charge was in the form of sintered briquettes. The charge was reduced under an argon atmosphere in the Magnetherm reactor for constant period and constant temperature. The results showed that the clinker can be used as a start-up slag for the magnethermic process. Also, the optimum conditions for the extraction process were found at 2XSi stoichiometry to give maximum reduction of 80% after 15 minutes reduction time at a temperature of 1550°C. XRD and XRF measurements were used to determine the phases present and the extent of reduction of magnesium, respectively. In this study, sulfide-type inclusion morphologies of a Ca-treated hot-rolled wheel steel, Grade-X, were investigated. The specimens taken from the hot-rolled products of Grade-X heats were studied. The size and distribution of elongated sulfide inclusions were examined for the heats of different S levels. Elongated sulfide inclusions were either not observed or rarely encountered when ladle analysis S content was below 50 ppm. The size and relative abundance of sulfide inclusions were reported to increase markedly when the S composition was greater than or equal to 70 ppm and the Ca/S ratio was less than 0.50. The effect of Ti addition (0.010?0.020% Ti) on sulfide-type inclusion morphologies was then investigated for heats having a sulfur content higher than 50 ppm. Addition of Ti was found to have a partial effect on decreasing the size of sulfide-type inclusions under real steelmaking conditions. Keywords Sulfide inclusions, Ca-treatment, titanium.

Value added blasting is a process methodology that links tasks and processes, with the aim to improve/enhance the technical application of explosives technology and initiating systems, resulting in improved output. The phases and steps of a typical value added blasting intervention are discussed in this paper. Each step having distinct purposes, principles and methodology. The underlying philosophies and process steps of the programme are described for each step. This paper gives an account of projects that have been completed in two Anglo American Gold Mines. This will include a description of the projects that were conducted at Vaal Reefs 8 Shaft and Western Deep Levels South Mine covering: ? The need for blasting improvements ? With the removal of the majority of the shallow mineral reserves there has been an increase in the mining depths in the South African mining industry. This has, in turn, changed the industry?s and stakeholders? perceptions of risk associated with mining-induced instability. In recent years the increased mining depth, particularly in open pits, has led to an increase in pit slope failures, which has highlighted the need for appropriate and effective pit slope management programmes. Such a programme comprises many facets, including mine hazard plans, regular slope inspections, cleaning of interim and final pit faces, blasting practices, histories of failures, pit depressurization, stormwater control and evacuation procedures. However, it is arguably in the field of slope monitoring that the most significant strides have been made in terms of new technologies and best practice in open pit mining geotechnics, with the introduction of technologies such as laser scanners and slope stability radar. This paper seeks to illustrate the operational benefits associated with the implementation of new technologies into open pit mining, using AngloGold Ashanti?s Geita Gold Mine in Tanzania as an example.

SYNOPSIS A prototype collimated radiometric face scanner was tested in the Harmony Gold Mine. The results obtained during the pilot study indicate that in situ radiometric uranium assays are statistically indistinguishable from those obtained conventionally from channel chip samples. In addition, the study demonstrated that reasonably reliable gold estimates can be deduced from the radiometric measurements, by use of the ratio of gold to uranium within a mine. The instrumentation, calibration procedures, and background determination are described briefly.

A computer-based, real-time mine management system has been installed in a number of underground operations. The system’s innovative software application is coupled with wireless data acquisition and database management to provide complete mine monitoring and control execution in closed-loop control fashion. The system is well suited to automatically assign equipment, acquire status, and reassign resources based on status; and to automate information handling. The system has provided mines with improved utilization of the equipment fleet and mining crews, and reduced workplace cycle time. This paper describes the deployment of systems at a number of underground mining operations and discusses future development of the system. Small A computer system to aid in the planning of production in mines and its application to a complex colliery are descrIbed, The system consists of three phases, the data base maintenance program the 'production simulator' and the report generation facility, In the first part of the paper the categories of information kept on the data base and the functions of the simulator are described in general terms. The application of the system to a multi-product colliery operating a variety of mining methods in a number of superimposed seams is described m the second part. In conclusion some comments are made on further applications and intended future developments.

A survey was conducted so that the degree of corrosive, erosive, and abrasive attack on material-handling systems in the mining and mineral-processing industry could be assessed, and so that the areas of research and development that would be relevant to the needs of the industry could be determined. Of the 59 different mines that were invited to participate in the survey, 41 returned completed questionnaires, giving a return rate of 70 per cent. The total number of completed questionnaires amounted to 45. An analysis of the results shows that attack by erosion or abrasion is considered to occur more often than attack by corrosion. However, al three types of attack must be regarded as significant problems within the mining industry, since 52 per cent of the participating mines reported pump failures due to the inability of the materials of construction to withstand the operating conditions, and almost 90 per cent reported piping failures due to corrosion (22 per cent) or to erosion and abrasion (78 per cent).

This study deals with the development of some new theory concerning the bias which will result from the employment of the t-estimator if in fact the underlying distribution of ore values is not lognormal. It is found that the t-estimator is robust as long as the logarithmic variance is small and the shape factors of the transformed distribution are not unduly large. The choice of the threshold parameter [t] for the t-estimator is important, and some hints are given how to estimate it if the sample size is small, as en- countered in borehole valuation problems.

(Min. Eng.) (Member) INTRODUCTION Messrs J. W. Wilson and P. C. Graham are to be congratulated on an excellent paper containing several thought-provoking remarks. The concept of allocating a machine and equipment valued initially at some R300 000 on an experimental basis is courageous, and the results obtained could be of interest to the mining industry as a whole. The Gold Fields of S.A. Group approached this problem differently. In pioneering the start of this work in South African gold mines, they considered that expenditure of this magnitude would be warranted only if the proposition was viable right from the start. To this end, a Robbins R41 was purchased expressly to assist in the duplication of part of the No. 1 shaft system of the Doomfontein Gold Mine. Mr M. J. Koortsl has summed up the initial results of this work and given some preliminary costing, but inflation since that period has made these figures somewhat out of date.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a microcomputer-based mineral modelling system that enhances analytical capabilities of the agency. It draws upon the extensive data base previously developed for the Bureau's Availability studies. The model is first formulated as a generalized network flow optimization problem, the optimal flows from which are fed into a transportation algorithm. The goal of the modelling system is first to fulfill prespecified demand at the minimum opportunity cost and second to identify feasible, optimal trade patterns. The system facilitates the analysis of policy issues on a real-time basis and supports the Bureau's mission to assess mineral resources.

South Africa holds approximately three-quarters of the world?s viable chromite ore resources and dominates the global production of ferrochrome. Albeit completely unintended, small amounts of Cr(VI) are formed during ferrochrome production. Certain Cr(VI)species are regarded as carcinogenic, hence making the treatment of some ferrochrome waste materials necessary. In this paper, the Cr(VI) treatment strategies currently employed by the South African ferrochrome producers are investigated by means of a literature review and a questionnaire survey. From the discussion, it is evident that various treatment strategies are available to deal with Cr(VI)-containing waste in the ferrochrome industry. However, by far the most commonly applied treatment strategy remains the aqueous reduction of Cr(VI) with ferrous iron. The advantages and the correct application of this strategy, together with the disadvantages and pitfalls, are argued. Innovative improvements on historic practices are also discussed

The Zinifex Century Mine employs a large number of Detritor mills for fine and ultra-fine grinding to liberate silica and sphalerite at 80 per cent passing 7.5 microns before final zinc flotation. A joint project between CSIRO Minerals and the Zinifex Century Mine was carried out to evaluate the Detritor mill performance. Plant surveys were conducted around the Detritors in conjunction with laboratory tests. The survey data showed that the Detritors in the ultra-fine milling circuit performed well. They reduced a feed F80 sizing of 46 microns to a product P80 sizing of 7.5 microns at a gross energy consumption of 37.2 kWh/t. Scale-up of ultra-fine milling Detritors was studied using a 0.55 kW laboratory batch unit and a 355 kW full-scale Detritor by processing Century zinc concentrate with 1 mm sand media. The results indicated that the 0.55 kW laboratory mill underestimated the energy consumption of the full-scale Detritor by about 20 per cent for a product P80 of seven microns. The performances of a horizontal IsaMill and a vertical Detritor were compared as ultra-fine milling devices for processing Century zinc concentrate. The experimental data demonstrated that, when using the same grinding media, the energy efficiency of the two mills is similar despite the difference in mill designs. The Detritors used for regrind duty at the Century Mine performed poorly when processing feed at 80 per cent passing 88 micron. The energy consumption was high and the product size distribution was broad with particles above 100 microns in the feed unbroken and particles below ten microns overground. A coarser ceramic media of 3 mm was therefore tested in a laboratory Detritor to process the regrind Detritor feed as an alternative to the 1 mm Colorado sand used at the Century Mine. The ceramic media reduced the energy consumption significantly and produced a narrower product size distribution, which is more desirable for the downstream flotation process.

Robert Rampton Porter died on 8th September, 1985, in Salt Lake City, Utah, at the age of 75. Bob Porter was born in Salt Lake City in 1910, and he attended the University of Utah, where he obtained an M.Sc. degree in metallurgy. Galvanizing In conjunction with the National Institute for Materials Research of the CS I R, the South African Hot-Dip Galvanizers' Association has organized the First International Conference on Galvanizing in South Africa. This event will take place at the C SIR Conference Centre in Pretoria from 3rd to 7th November, 1986. The rate of face advance in the gold mines is between 3 and 10 m a month, with a median value of about 5 m a month; it follows that faces are blasted less frequently than is planned. There are many advantages in the use of short holes for stoping to give face advances of from 0,7 to 0,8 m per blast. This has the potential for so increasing the frequency of blasting that monthly rates of face advance could be improved significantly. Cleaning with face scrapers is too slow to permit the maximum achievement of a complete clean, drill, and blast cycle for each shift. Short-hole blasting, combined with the use of mechanical conveyors for face cleaning, offers the possibility of completing two such cycles each day, yielding monthly rates of face advance of up to 35 m. Experiments aimed at developing safe, unitized explosive charges well-suited to produce reliable face advances of 0,7 to 0,8 m per blast under a wide range of gold-mining conditions have been notably successful. A novel method of assessing the effectiveness of a blast based on the percentage of holes that leave socket lengths of 5 cm or less was used. Unitized charges of 60 per cent Ammon gelignite, 600 mm long by 25 mm in diameter, appear to be near optimal. The explosive is de-sensitized to obviate detonation by chance mechanical impact, but requires only a 6D detonator for initiation; it has good water-resistance. Means have been developed for producing these cartridges automatically, but the necessary machines will have to be built specially and the cartridges are not yet available in large numbers. A second experiment by way of an extended pilot production trial using these cartridges in holes 0,9 m long is now under way. Preliminary results indicate that drilling and explosive efficiencies and productivity are well above average, even though face scraping is being used. Unitized charges of this type are likely to prove even more advantageous when mechanical face conveyors come into use.

FINANCE The annual accounts, which follow this report, indicate that income again exceeded expenditure by a margin of R21 410 (last year R28 524). This year's income of R71 184 showed a further increase compared with last year's figure of R55 025. Costs, however, also in¬creased, and it is calculated that, excluding non-recurrent costs, the cost of running the Institute in¬creased by R6 654 from R25 501 to R33 155 for the current year. The main increases were involved in secretarial fees, stationery and print¬ing, and in publication of the Journal. All indications are that costs will continue to rise, and we have been advised that the A.S. & T.S. will be increasing their secretarial fees by 25 per cent in the year ahead to meet their rising costs. This year's surplus was derived entirely from the revenue from sales of publications (R13 644) and a surplus from the 1974 Winter School (RIO 654). There can be no certainty that revenue from these sources can be repeated each year. Our funds are in a satisfactory position because of these worth¬while activities, but the administrat¬ion of the Institute should not de¬pend on them. Council will accord¬ingly have to give consideration in the year ahead to an upward adjust¬ment of subscriptions to meet rising costs.

Synopsis This is a summary of investigations in the field of pressure leaching carried out at the Institute for Extractive Metallurgy of the Technical University of Berlin-West during the last seven years. The efficient dispersion of gas in a liquid and its dissolutions as well as the events at the phase boundary when leaching ZnS are reported. At the end two examples are given for the use of pressure leaching in the processing of smelter by-products. INTRODUCTION About 20 years ago, experiments were independently started in Canada and in Berlin on the subject of dissolving sulfidic ores without preliminary treatment by means of leaching under increased oxygen pressure. In Canada ammoniacal solutions were mainly employed, and F. A. Forward and his co-workers were successful in applying this process on a large industrial scale1, 2. This process is used in Fort Saskatchewan to produce about 15,000 tons of Ni per year. In Berlin, investigations were started on leaching with acid solutions3, 4. This process had also been used on a large industrial scale in the D.S.A., but the choice of unfavourable working conditions led to great difficulties, and to giving up this process for industrial use. Later on in Berlin work was carried out especially on the kinetics of pressure leaching 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and its applications to the processing of smelter by-products, in particular of mattes and speisses10, 11, 12, 13, 14. The dissolution of ores and by-products can be subdivided into four steps: 1. the efficient dispersion of the gas, so that its dissolution occurs over as great a surface area as possible, since only the dissolved oxygen reacts with the solid, 2. the suspension of the solid, so that the entire surface can take part in the reaction, 3. the phase boundary reaction, 4. the removal of the reaction products. The first two steps belong to the field of process engineering and will be discussed from this point of view. The aim of these experiments15 was to find out first of all the limits of efficiency of self-sucking stirrers in solutions of low viscosity with regard to the mass transfer. In addition, the effect of ultrasonics in the same reaction system was studied. The experiments were carried out in a lucite container as shown in Fig. 1. Four baffles of 0.1 d width were in the stirring vessel. The height of these baffles was adjustable. For every experiment one litre of liquid was used. An infinitely variable direct current motor, which was fixed with a hollow shaft, served as the driving power for the stirrer.
