Intensive work on the deoxidation of steel with manganese-silicon alloys by the U. S. Bureau of Mines has shown that the use of those alloys, which may be produced from our domestic manganese ores, would decrease the ferromanganese requirements of a very large tonnage of our steel by from 60 to 80 per cent and in some cases by 100 per cent. The open-hearth heats made with these alloys have been of excellent quality. The tonnage of our ferro-grade ores Which has been made available by the bureau's ore-dressing studies, combined with the products resulting from such processes as those developed by the bureau and by Bradley for Cuyuna ores, should easily fill our reduced ferromanganese requirements when manganese-silicon alloys and ordinary Spiegel are used in the way described in this report. There are no technical difficulties in the application of this practice, and any difficulties involved in its wide and immediate application would only be those arising from habituated ideas of the necessity of ferromanganese. General acceptance of this practice and development of the available sources of domestic ferro-grade material by already proven processes should make this country independent of foreign ores. UPTREND in value of mineral production in the Commonwealth of Australia continued in 1963, again pacing the country's general economic growth rate. Increases occurred in output of most raw and processed mineral products, including bauxite, copper, iron ore, pig iron, steel, lead, zinc, cement, gypsum, pyrite, coal, and refined petroleum products. Although the economy of Australia has been traditionally based on wool and agricultural products, in recent years the country has become highly industrialized. Nearly one-third of the 3.6 million total civilian labor force is engaged in manufacturing. Employment in mines and quarries occupies 1.4 percent of the national labor force.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL), in collaboration with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), the mining industry, and seal manufacturers recently conducted a series of full-scale experiments within the underground experimental mine at PRL’s Lake Lynn Laboratory. The purpose of the experiments was toe valuate the explosion-resistant characteristics of several new seal designs for rapid deployment during mine emergencies. These seals can be deployed in 6 to 10 hr and are capable of with standing explosion overpressures in excess of 140 kPa (20 psi). These novel seal designs use available mine materials, do not require conventional rib hitching, and, most importantly, can substantially reduce exposure time for coal miners during sealing and mine recovery operations.

In a Bureau of Mines study, unsteady, spherically symmetric, one-dimensional, compressible-flow (finite sound speed) equations were solved numerically for a spherical deflagration propagating concentrically in a spherical vessel with Mach numbers ranging from 0.2 to 0.7; trajectory histories agree with the infinite-sound-speed theory developed by Perlee, Fuller, and Saul (PFS). A preliminary result of this study shows that flames propagating with speeds greater than 20 pct the speed of sound in the unburned gas mixture generate a complex history of aerodynamic waves distributed throughout the spherical vessel. Although the average pressure and flame radius agree with those predicted by the PFS models, the aerodynamic waves have a pronounced effect on the flame velocity, differing appreciably from that predicted by the PFS model.

This Bureau of Mines report deals with water infusion of coalbeds, which can control methane emission at face areas during developmental mining and which may sometimes suppress dust. Studies show that water infused into the coalbed flows through the fracture system and displaces the methane in the fractures and prevents migration from the solid coal. Displaced gas migrates away from the face area that has been water infused and enters the return ventilation airways. A gradual decrease in methane emission is observed from the start of infusion until the infused zone is mined through. Depending on the permeability of the coalbed, infusion pressures ranged from 300 to 2,200 lb/in2. Face emissions in the Upper Kittanning coalbed were reduced by 89 pct; reductions of 38 to 79 pct were measured in the Pittsburgh coalbed depending on the relationship between the face cleat direction and mining direction. Respirable dust levels were reduced by about 75 pct on a longwall section in the Pocahontas No. 3 coalbed and by about 50 pct on a development section in the Upper Kittanning coalbed, but no statistically reliable reduction was found in the respirable dust levels in the Pittsburgh coalbed.

Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Spokane, WA, have collaborated with three Western longwall coal mines in an on going effort to develop technologies that will aid in providing safe and stable working areas. The goal of the research described here is to develop a stress monitoring system that will provide immediate information to mine managers for making daily safety decisions as areas of poor ground are mined through. Initial work has focused on answering preliminary questions regarding the reliability and use of stress change patterns. Research is concentrated on monitoring horizontal stress because horizontal stress is transmitted over long distances through stiff strata, thus allowing an extended length of entry to be monitored. This paper presents an explanation of the concept, key results from field tests at two mine sites, and a proposed process for implementing a monitoring system. System design layouts, instrument use, data collection and interpretation methods, and processes to present findings to mine staff are described. Additional validation and correlation with actual failure mechanisms are required before this approach can be recommended at ongoing operations. However, initial results indicate that this approach shows promise in mines prone to bumps and roof falls associated with large stress changes. In particular, analyses of measured changes in horizontal stresses appear useful.

THE MILDEST recession of the postwar period ended in the first months of 1961, and the economy climbed steadily during the remainder of the year. The Federal Reserve Board (FRB) Index of Industrial Production climbed from a low point of 102 (1957=100) in February to 115 in December, a rise of 12.5 percent. But economic activity for the year as a whole was only 1.5 percent higher than the 1960 level, as measured by real gross national product (GNP). Although activity increased throughout 1961, much of it was merely regaining ground lost in the decline during the second half of 1960 and the first months of 1961. The FRB index did not re ain the July 1960 high of 110 until June of 1961. Mineral fuels did not fully share in the economic recovery. The (FRB) crude oil and natural gas index rose only 5 percent between February and December. Although the index of monthly coal production increased 11.5 percent during the year, the February level was so low that total production for the year was the lowest since 1954. Total production of energy measured in Btu's was up slightly (1 percent) during the ear. Coal production was down; production of crude oil and natural gas was up. Calculated consumption paralleled production-total up slightly, coal lower, and crude oil and natural gas higher. The most interesting product developments were in coke and residual fuel oil. The increasing concern for dust control in metal and nonmetal mining prompted the Bureau of Mines to investigate the dust suppression technique of applying foam to face drilling and crushing operations in a gypsum mine. Previous attempts to achieve effective dust control on face drills using other techniques, such as dry collection and boom-mounted external water sprays, have not been successful. The largest problem encountered when using these techniques has been the lack of sustained effective dust capture at the face. Results for two faces studied show that injection of the foam through the drill steel provided an average dust reduction of 95 pct. However, the use of foam on the crusher provided no dust reduction at the operator's position (because of good local ventilation) and a 27-pct average dust reduction for two feeders at a location midway between the operator's position and the crusher. The conclusions obtained from this study are that (1) foam can be an extremely effective dust control technique when used on localized dust sources such as dust generated within a blasthole during drilling, and (2) foam is only marginally effective as a dust control technique when used on nonlocalized dust sources such as dust generated during the feeder-and-crusher operation.

The question of earth models has repeatedly arisen in our work. An accurate representation of the seismic properties is required for three reasons: 1.To be able to determine from a set of received arrival times, the location of a seismic source in the earth, and secondly the degree of accuracy required in the model used for calculating source location from the set of arrival time differences. 2. To be able to determine the expected arrival times at an array of geophones produced in response to a hypothetical source in the earth. 3. To be able to estimate received signal strengths more accurately. The work reported here on earth models is based on information from sever- al consultants and from others who expressed an interest in the problem and supplied information to us. II. COAL MINE GEOLOGY On one of our earlier assignments for the Bureau of Mines, Earth Science Research Inc. of Cambridge, Massachusetts prepared for us a short description of the lithology to be expected at coal mine sites. This description follows, together with the ranges of compressional seismic velocities (Figure I*) associated with typical materials comprising the layered structure of a coal mine area. Coal is primarily associated with fresh water sediments including sandstones, shales, and clays, and occasionally may be metamorphased to varying degrees. In the Appalachian Basin the coal beds occur within cyclical sequences of non-marine shales, sands tones, conglomerates, limes tones, and clays. The beds range in thickness from a few inches to 60 feet, averaging between 2 feet and 10 feet. They have generally broad areal extent, occasionally up to 5,000 square miles, and have an overall tabular or lens-like shape. Within a particular lens, local changes in thickness are normal.

The Bureau of Mines has successfully tested a method to simulate methane (CH~) flows from face areas through the returns of noncoal mines. This technique' involves releasing a small quantity of tracer gas at a working area and sampling for that gas downstream in the re- turn airways. By measuring the dilution of the tracer gas, the dilution of any volume of CH4 released at the face can be calculated. This information is useful in selecting locations for CH4 monitors and in deciding the necessity for permissible equipment in the returns.

This report describes an instrument system developed by the Bureau of Mines to continuously monitor and record changes in roof displacement during underground mining activity. The instrument consists of a single-wire extensometer coupled to a mechanical-drive chart recorder mounted in an aluminum frame installed in the roof. The unit is small and simple to install and meets safety requirements for use in underground coal mines.

Avoid errors in determining the amount of trace elements in overburden when core drilling samples, particularly as required by PL 95-87, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977. Reason Metal additives present in certain drill stem joint lubricants appear to contaminate overburden samples. Analysis of the size consist of broken coal has been extended in recent years beyond the mere representation of the relative quantities of the various sizes present in a given lot of the material. Fundamental characteristics of the coal related to the process of breakage fix the distribution of sizes, and it has been found by Rosin and Rammler4/ that a relatively simple law-governs this property. Benhett5/ has described a graphical method of expressing the relationship, and by its use considerable simplification in the expression of size distribution is possible.

Provide a means to (1) rapidly disconnect a multifunctioning signal channel from a multichannel data collection system, (2) protect electronic devices from damage while causing the minimum amount of data collection disruption, and (3) operate electronic devices under gassy mine conditions. Background Data collection system instrumentation and cables are often located in hazardous areas of underground coal mines. As a result, frequent damage to the instrumentation cables occurs from roof falls, heavy equipment, and the relocation of air, water, and power lines. A similar problem exists in surface areas where cables and instrumentation can be damaged by animals and by vehicle traffic. Without a circuit-breaking feature, the damaged cables could cause instrumentation to be ruined, cause power supply failure, and otherwise disrupt data collection in some situations the lack of a circuit-breaking feature might cause an ignition in a methane atmosphere.

A medium-frequency (MF) communication system has been built and has been tested in underground mines. It provides radio coverage to vehicles and personnel anywhere in the mine via parasitic coupling into existing mine conductors. The system consists of base stations, repeaters, and vehicular and personnel transceivers. Air-core antennas for vehicles and clamp-on antennas for base stations and repeaters were designed for maximum coupling efficiency using existing mine wiring. Personnel transceivers are of a unique vest design that features a low physical profile, good user comfort, and efficient antenna design. In-mine tests show impressive results. Range between rubber-tired vehicles and base stations is often measured in miles. With repeaters, greater range is possible.

To reduce front-end loader (FEL) collision accidents by detecting obstacles in the rear blind area. The Problem Federal regulations require an audible backup alarm to activate when an FEL is backing. Since the device is constantly being activated, the warning soon becomes a normal part of the mine environment and is less effective as a warning device. Also, when several machines are working together, it is difficult to detect by ear alone just which machine is backing. Approach The Bureau defined the location for hazard detection to include an area extending 15 to 20 ft behind the rear bumper of an FEL. Then, existing surveillance and detection technology was assembled, ruggedness, and applied to the FEL's rear blind area to form a new discriminating backup alarm system employing either infrared light, ultrasonics or radar
