Six different types of blasting caps, mainly of the type used in coal mines, were evaluated to determine both their 1lF and DC characteristics. Two of the caps were of foreign manufacture. All the American made caps had "no-fire" (0.1% firing probability with 95% confidence, as determined by the Bruceton test) levels above 0.04 watts. One of the caps of foreign manufacture had a "no-fire" level of 0.023 watts. A worst case analysis of blasting cap pick up of RF power in coal mines was performed and safe distance curves were generated.

This Bureau of Mines report presents data on the changes in the use of steel in motor vehicles over the past 35 yr. Sources of supply of steel for the automotive sector have shifted from almost all domestic in the 1950's to about 50% domestic and 50% foreign in the 1980's. Downsizing, design changes, and substitution of lighter weight materials to achieve energy efficiency also contributed to the market loss of the domestic steel industry. Although plastics and aluminum have displaced some steel in motor vehicles over the years, heavy low-carbon steel is now being replaced most rapidly by lightweight high-strength steel. If the percent of domestic steel used in motor vehicles had not declined since 1950, domestic industry would have supplied 9.3 million more short tons of steel than it supplied in 1985. Downsizing and design changes accounted for 43% of the loss; steel imports, 32%; and substitution of plastics and aluminum, 25%. In 1985, the total value of market share lost by U.S. steel producers was $5.1 billion, of which $1.6 billion was lost to foreign steel producers and automobile manufacturers. Through aggressive marketing and increased efficiency, however, the domestic steel industry may be able to recapture some lost markets, as applications for high-strength steels expand, and as foreign-owned automotive plants in the United States provide fresh sales opportunities.

An analysis of the geologic structure of an area of Buchanan County, Va., was made by the Bureau of Mines using imagery from an airborne AN/APQ-97 side-looking radar system to evaluate that mapping technique for delineating structural features that may cause mining problems. Side-looking airborne radar (SLAR) was found to be a useful remote sensing tool for geologic structural analysis, Fault and joint systems identified by lineaments and linear patterns in the imagery were verified by surface and in-mine observations. Little Paw Paw fault was extended 10 miles by SLAR lineament analysis. A 22-mile fault, here named the Bishop-Bradshaw Creek fault, was mapped by lineament analysis and verified by observation of the fault on the Bishop Coal Co. mine map and on offset patterns of commercial gas production along the fault and surface observation of lineament along the fault. Three major super-imposed joint sets and several fault or fractured zones were identified by SLAR lineament analysis, showing more complex structure than earlier mapping indicated. SLAR imagery accurately delineated structural features that are known to affect gas migration and accumulation and that weaken the rock forming the immediate roof to mine workings, causing mining problems and potentially hazardous environment in the mines.

[In July, 1924, the Bureau of Mines, through its Petroleum Experiment Station, undertook a field study of methods used in oil-field shops for dressing and tempering fishtail bits. The purpose of this work was to suggest chances that would be helpful to the bit-dresser in turning out better treated, harder, and tougher bits, and thus cut down the excessive loss of time caused by too frequent changing of bits. It was the intention to eliminate as much as possible the guess work connected with dressing and tempering bits under the method of judging temperature by eye, by developing; practical methods of controlling temperature. If there were some possible means of accurate temperature control, then it would be an easy matter to bring all bits to the proper temperature for maximum hardness rued toughness, thus doing away with the source of most of the trouble experienced in the present method of bit tempering. Shortly after the Bureau of Mines began its study, a chop In the Stroud, Oklahoma, oil field announced method for tempering fishtail bits that Would increase the drilling footage of each bit treated. The method accurately regulates, by the use of a bath of molten salt, the temperature to which a bit is heated before being quenched to produce hardness. There is nothing new in using silt baths for the, heat treatment of steel, but this was the first attempt to introduce it into the oil fields for use in hardening bits, and for this purpose it proved to be admirably adapted. In tempering, by the old system it is not possible to measure the temperature of the heated bit by means of an electrical instrument for that purpose, whereas this is an easy matter with the now method. If heating steel to slightly above the critical point rind quenching suddenly will bring out its best properties, their here is a method of accurately bringing the steel to that point.]

The work described in this Bureau of Mines report was undertaken to fill a need of industry for high-temperature heat-content data for uranium tetrafluoride. Without such data, heat balance evaluations of processes involving this substance are seriously hampered. Measurements of the heat content of uranium tetrafluoride were conducted at temperatures from 298° to 1,350° K. The melting point and heat of fusion were determined. The results are presented in suitable tabular form, and representative heat-content equations are included.

"INTRODUCTION The producing iron-ore ranges in the Lake Superior district are the Marquette and Menominee in Michigan, the Gogebic in Michigan and Wisconsin, and the Cuyuna, Mesabi, and Vermilion in Minnesota. These ranges produce about 85 percent of the iron ore mined in the United States. The accident experience in connection with this production is better than that of the regions producing the remaining 15 percent. Production and shipments vary slightly from year to year owing to stockpiling underground ore during the winter, or nonshipping, season but closely approximate each other over a period of years. This information circular supplements, combines, and continues the data contained in Information Circulars 7321 3/ and 7410 4/, including statistics for 1946 and 1947.Whereas the title ""Accident Experience"" is used for uniformity and logical indexing throughout this report, ""injury"" will be used as a general term to apply to disabilities of all degrees.During the 8-year period 1940 to 1947, inclusive, 619,054,023 long tons of iron ore was shipped from the Lake Superior district. 5/ Michigan and Wisconsin shipped 117,828,939 tons, or 19.03 percent of the total, and employed approximately 9,260 men. Minnesota shipped 501,225,084 tons, or 80.97 percent of the total, and employed an approximate annual average of 12,260 men. The tons produced and shipped per man employed in Minnesota is much greater than in Michigan and Wisconsin, owing to the large open-cut production in Minnesota."

To pinpoint dust sources and to improve dust control on longwalls. Approach Use short-term gravimetric sampling to determine the severity of various dust sources, and to evaluate dust control techniques used in longwall mining. Short-term gravimetric sampling can be used to isolate dust levels produced by various dust sources. How It Works Traditionally, gravimetric samples have been collected over an 8-hour shift, yielding time-weighted, average dust concentrations. This method gives a good indication of the full-shift respirable dust exposure of underground workers, but is less than satisfactory for identifying dust sources, determining their severity, or for evaluating the effectiveness of dust control techniques. Short-term gravimetric sampling uses equipment available to all mine operators. Two individuals composing the survey team each collect multiple (three to four) gravimetric samples during selected segments of the mining cycle. Multiple samples are necessary to insure accuracy, and to obtain a valid average measurement of the respirable dust concentration when sampling for short periods of time (typically 20 to 30 minutes). The gravimetric instruments may be carried in a sampling package or in a "sampling vest." A fishing vest with four large pockets can be used for this purpose. The sampling pumps are carried in pockets and the sampling head assemblies arc hung across the front of the vest.

In connection with its researches on the crude petroleums of the United States, the Bureau of Mines has made a particular study of apparatus for the distillation of hydrocarbon mixtures. While this study is still incomplete it has already resulted in the development of considerable laboratory and semi-plant equipment, motet of which has been described in various publications of the Bureau. The laboratory apparatus (Hempel distillation) and method gives satisfactory comparative results in the laboratory examination of crudes and have been found applicable to crudes of all types, but the agreement of laboratory and plant distillations is not as close as might be desired. This is due, in part, to limitations in size and construction of the laboratory apparatus. Some refiners claim that the Bureau of Mines&apos; laboratory method (Hempel distillation3) for distilling crude petroleum, does not show the full gasoline content of the oil, while others have stated that it indicates more gasoline than can be obtained from the crude commercially. This difference of opinion among refiners results largely from the great variation in stills used and methods of operating them. The Bureau&apos;s experience has shown that crude oils from different fields vary widely in character; in fact, that it is not yet possible to classify crude&apos;s adequately on the basis of their Down chemical and physical characteristics. As a result of the differences that exist among crudes, and of the difficulty of designing refinery equipment, no standard practice has yet been adopted for the commercial distillation of petroleum, and ma" types of stills are used in the refineries of this country. Dewatering of typical Florida phosphate rock slime by electro - osmotic techniques was investigated to determine if a compacted , plastic solid product could be obtained with simultaneous recovery of the water for re - use . Tests with porous cathodes and rod - type anodes imbedded in dilute slime charges of up to 4 tons in weight showed that the slime could be dewatered to about 35 percent solids . The dewatered products had the consistency of modeling clay . In the large - scale tests using 2.5 - foot electrode spacings , about 21 kilowatthours of power were consumed per ton of water removed in thickening the slime from 17 to 25 percent solids , but the rate of water removal was so slow that the process was not considered commercially feasible . Other tests made with electrode spacings of from 2.5 to 8 feet showed that more rapid dewatering could be obtained but that the power required was excessive . However , for special uses such as stabilizing slime pond dikes where the cost of dewatering might not be a prime requisite , high voltages could be used to rapidly remove the water . Tests of 400 - pound slime charges using a combination of electroosmosis and vacuum filtration showed that the rate of dewatering could be expedited . The average power required to thicken a ton of slime from 15 to 35 percent solids was 5 and 50 kilowatt - hours when operating the electroosmotic filtration cell at potentials of 20 and 100 volts , respectively . calculated filtration area of about 10 square feet per ton of slime treated per day was required to thicken the slime from 15 to 35 percent solids .

Automation of coal mining activities at the face offers improvements in worker safety, health, and productivity. Introduction of integrated computer-sensor systems to current mining machines will enable these machines to perform some of the most hazardous tasks through supervised teleoperation. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is pursuing the development of the enabling technology necessary to achieve this goal. The research program consists of both basic and applied research, each focused on the fundamental issues of computer and sensor technologies. Short-term research is directed to providing computer-assisted, remote supervisory operation of present underground equipment; the long-term goal is the development of progressively more intelligent mining systems. The research program includes a review of robotic machine and autonomous vehicle technologies and of current mining technology, which provides a base for developing innovative mining methods; research in navigation and guidance technology, emphasizing control of a continuous mining machine; research on coal-rock interface sensing technology for horizon control, and rib thickness control in highwall mining; the development of computer systems and hierarchical architectures for real-time control; and development of expert systems for machine system fault diagnostics and predictive maintenance. This report presents a brief background and the current status for each of these research areas.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed and tested a teleoperating system to control a new highwall mining system. A remote operator was provided out-of-sight sensory information and control of coal extraction and haulage equipment. Surface and production testing proved that the teleoperating system supplied the operator with sufficient sensory information to operate the mining system. Details on the teleoperating system provided in this report include (1) sensor selection, (2) a description of the electronic control system, (3) equipment selection and modifications, (4) the positive test results, and (5) recommendations for system improvements.

Provisional values for the heat of formation of europium trichloride and europium sesquioxide were determined by solution calorimetry utilizing europium metal of more than 99-percent purity. The resulting values for the heats of formation of Eu203 (cubic) and EuCls (hexagonal) were -386,970 ±l,200 cal/mole and -218,740 ±650 cal/mole, respectively, measured at 298.15° K.

"During recent months much criticism as to the efficiency of mine labor has been heard from various, sections of the country. No doubt much of this criticism has been well founded. The present lack of efficiency and of stability is due primarily to a spirit of restlessness and partial irresponsibility engendered during the transition from war conditions to peace time conditions. This spirit or unrest not only among the laboring classes but in every branch of the human family following a period of intense nervous tension in a nation appears to be a natural sequence of war and beyond the control of man. This condition will gradually disappear, and the majority of our people will again assume their natural order of living, but labor will for a considerable period be sensitive to these influences, whether they be exerted for good or for evil. Employers of labor should take cognizance of this fact and bend every effort towards the development of measures that promote efficiency and permanence of the working force.Labor efficiency depends upon many and varied factors. Some of these factors as applied to mine labor are briefly enumerated in the following paragraph:Selection and Placement of Manpower:In the selection of men the two main considerations are physical ability and adaptability. The laws of mechanics should be applied in the selection of men as in the selection of machinery. If a machine is required for a certain class of work, the type of machine known to be mechanically fit for such work is selected. Likewise, men should be selected with regard to their physical and temperamental fitness for the kind of work expected of them."

The major developments of the world&apos;s Mineral economy in 1955 were the continued rise in production and consumption of practically all major minerals. the sharp increase in output of the fertilizer minerals in response to demands for greater food output, the cutback, in new investment for steel capacity in Europe and Japan, Europe&apos;s continuing decline as a producer of primary minerals, and the emergence of nuclear power as an economically competitive factor in the energy economies of the United States and Western Europe. In resource development, discovery of new natural gas deposits in the North Sea and the continued development of Australia&apos;s bauxite and iron ore resources, making this country a major source for these commodities, were significant.

How It Works Current fire warning systems for underground mines, such as stench, audible alarms, and messengers, arc slow, unreliable, and seldom achieve total mine coverage. An ultralow-frequency electromagnetic fire warning alarm system with true through-the-earth signaling capabilities was developed to solve these problems. The system was originally designed for high-back room-and-pillar mines where stench systems are unusable due to the low velocity of mine air flow. However, the system has an application to all underground mines.

This report (An Introduction to Safety) is the first in a nine-part series of recommendations addressing the functional safety of processor-controlled mining equipment. It is part of a risk-based system safety process encompassing hardware, software, humans, and the operating environment for the equipment&apos;s life cycle. Figure 1 shows a safety framework containing these recommendations. The reports in this series address the various life cycle stages of inception, design, approval and certification, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning. These recommendations were developed as a joint project between the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Mine Safety and Health Administration. They are intended for use by mining companies, original equipment manufacturers, and aftermarket suppliers to these mining companies. Users of these reports are expected to consider the set in total during the design cycle. • 1.0 Safety Introduction.—This is an introductory report for the general mining industry. It provides basic system/software safety concepts, discusses the need for mining to address the functional safety of programmable electronics, and includes the benefits of implementing a system/software safety program. • 2.1 System Safety and 2.2 Software Safety.—These reports draw heavily from International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard 61508 and other recognized standards. The scope is "surface and underground safety mining systems employing embedded, networked, and non-networked programmable electronics." System safety seeks to design safety into all phases of the entire system. Software is a subsystem; thus, software safety is a part of the system&apos;s safety. • 3.0 Safety File.—This report contains the documentation that demonstrates the level of safety built into the system and identifies limitations for the system’s use and operation. In essence, it is a "proof of safety" that the system and its operation meets the appropriate level of safety for the intended application. It starts from the beginning of the design, is maintained during the full life cycle of the system, and provides administrative support for the safety program of the full system. [ ]
