A survey of the literature on ELF and VLF atmospheric noise has been made. Most measurements have concentrated on the vertical electric field and the horizontal magnetic field rather than the vertical magnetic field which is of interest in transmission between horizontal loops. The limited vertical magnetic field data indicates that the vertical component is generally 10 to 20 dB below the horizontal component. Three laterally inhomogeneous earth models have been analyzed for conversion of horizontal to vertical magnetic field. The rough surface model examines surface effects, the inhomogeneous thin sheet model treats volume effects, and the buried cylinder model treats localized man-made effects. All three models predict the possibility of significant conversion from horizontal to vertical magnetic field. A thin sheet model has also been used to examine transmission from a buried magnetic dipole source. It is found that the pre- dicted fields more nearly model the measured data than does the homogeneous half-space model.

The Mary Arnold Mining Co. in 194.3 owned 292 acre s of mineral land in Christian County, Mo., and was one of two companies with milling facilities in southern-central Missouri. Production from this property between 19.37 and 1941 amounted to 1,718 tons of zinc in the form of zinc concentrate. Because of the urgent war requirements for additional zinc and the existing facilities for treatment of zinc-lead ores at these mines, in the winter of 1943-44, the Bureau of Mines investigated the deposits by churn drilling in an endeavor to outline enough ore to maintain production of zinc from this district. Five holes aggregating 1,043 feet were bored.

One of the most difficult, longstanding engineering problems associated with coal mining is the catastrophic failure of cog mine structures known as bumps. For more than 70 years, researchers and practitioners have assembled a wealth of technical information on coal bumps in an attempt to understand and control them. However, many technical issues raised long ago are still being debated today. This paper examines past experiences and recognizes achievements in the realm of coal bumps. U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) researchers collected and analyzed 172 coal bump incident reports and compiled the pertinent statistics into a database. Actual field studied are also discussed. Examination of past experience has shown that there is no one set of defining characteristics that is responsible for coal bumps. In all cases, bumps occur when complex arrangements of geology, stress, and mining conditions interact to interfere with the orderly dissipation of stress. However, it is evident from the database that a tremendous reservoir of knowledge has been established from past experience that has unquestionably limited the severity of coal mine bumps in the United States.

The underground mining industry is presently using the fluid network analyzer and digital computer to analyze ventilation systems. The availability of the digital computer and ventilation programs to mining companies has escalated its use, permitting the design and modification of new or existing mine ventilation systems to be projected completely and thoroughly with consistent precision. Because the analog computer has been analyzing ventilation systems accurately for many years, a comparison of the analog and digital methods was warranted. This report summarizes a detailed comparison for one mine, based on parallel analyses by the two computer systems.

"INTRODUCTION The manganese deposits of the Drum Mountain area were investigated as two separate projects. The first was begun in November 1940 and completed in August 1941, and the second began in January 1945 and ended in May of the same year. The first project was initiated as part of the Bureau of Mines program for development of strategic minerals for national defense. Subsequent operations disclosed conditions somewhat different than were expected, and it was decided that additional drilling should be done to delimit the ore bearing horizons further.The more promising manganese deposits in the Drum Mountains are situated on properties known as the Staats manganese mine and the Pratt manganese mine. The property controlled by the Pratt interests is under lease to the Ward Leasing Co. The 1941 project investigated the deposits on both properties, whereas the 1945 project was planned to explore further the oxidized ore bodies of the Pratt mine, although one hole was drilled in an attempt to extend the carbonate ore body on the Staats property (fig. 1).ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The 1963 performance of the United States economy was impressive. The year was one of continued growth unmarred by a recession. By the end of 1963 the economy's expansion had already lasted almost as long as the 1954-57 upswing, and the net gain in output since the trough in activity in early 1961 compared favorably with most earlier postwar cyclical advances. There was no indication of any slow- down at yearend. Both gross national product (GNP) and national income in 1963 were 5 percent higher than in the previous year. GNP totaled $584 billion, a gain of $28 billion over 1962. Real output of goods and services rose 3.4 percent over the year. Price increases continued to be moderate. Production, employment, personal income, and corporate profits all registered new but unemployment continued high at 5.5 percent and the prospects for improvement remained poor. The economy again failed to use its full potential. Current value of mineral production kept pace with the economy. The constant dollar value of mineral production gained more than real GNP because of the relatively stable price of minerals. Mining production achieved a new high in 1963. Steel production totaled 110 million tons, 12 million tons above 1962, making 1963 the first 100- million-ton year since 1957 and lifting the steel-associated minerals group upward. The gain in ferrous metals mining was insufficient to compensate for the decline of nonferrous metals mining resulting in an insignificant decline in the metal mining total as a whole. In this Bureau of Mines investigation, the electrochemical polarization behavior of Fe and Fe-1BCr has been characterized in rigorously controlled 1[N] H2S04 solutions stirred with oxygen or an inert gas. Samples that under-went various levels of corrosion or passivation were examined using Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and ion sputtering. Passivation of iron occurred at a potential of approximately 0.6 volt (1) in poorly stirred, oxygen-saturated solutions for forward polarization (scanning from cathodic to anodic potentials); (2) in pH-adjusted (increased), well-stirred, oxygen-saturated solutions for forward polarization; and (3) in well~ and poorly stirred, oxygen-and helium-saturated solutions for reverse polarization. Passivation of Fe-18Cr occurred at a potential of approximately -0.1 volt in helium-, nitrogen-, and oxygen-saturated solutions for all cases of forward polarization and most cases of reverse polarization. Elemental depth profiles obtained from AES sputtering measurements indicated that films or adsorbed species were present on iron samples in solution subjected to open-circuit, active, and transpassive corrosion, cathodic reduction, and passivation. This conclusion was reached by considering the distribution of the solution species, primarily sulfur, in the films, which were composed primarily of iron and oxygen. Sulfur was present throughout the films on actively corroding samples, in the outer regions of films of passive and transpassive samples, and on the film surfaces of open-circuit and cathodically reduced samples. For Fe-18Cr, sulfur was found on the surfaces of films on passive samples only, indicating that only the passive samples had films on their surfaces in solution. The films on electropolished and passive Fe-1BCr samples had the largest chromium concentrations, estimated to be approximately 45 at. pct, with less chromium in films of cathodically reduced, active, and open-circuit samples, in that order.

"INTRODUCTION This paper describes a method for the rational sorting of particles by means of a laboratory batch jig. Its purpose is to show that a material can be reliably appraised for gravity concentration without the drudgery of sink-float fractionations.Development of the batch- jig method of testing was incidental to a study of the Birmingham, Ala., red-iron ores now being conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the University of Alabama and the ore-producing companies.APPLICATIONOres and coal are commonly tested for their gravity-concentration characteristics by specific-gravity dissections in heavy liquids. The heavy liquid most commonly used for coal is zinc chloride and for ores they are benzene, carbon tetrachloride, acetylene tetrabromide, methylene iodide, and thallium malonate formate. The last is poisonous and corrosive to the skin but is essential for separations in the 3.3 to 4.4 specific gravity range. The last two of these liquids are expensive, and several of them are hard to obtain now.Although it is not suggested that heavy-liquid dissections be eliminated entirely, sometimes a more reliable evaluation of coal and ore can be obtained by other and more simple means. For example, sink-float data were unsatisfactory as a guide to commercial gravity concentration of a red-iron ore because they did not take into account the difference in particle shape of the hematite and gangue and the differences in true and apparent specific gravity of the hematite grains, some of which were porous. For this ore, the batch-jig method of testing herein discussed proved advantageous. Not Only did the batch-jig data give a truer picture of the concentration problem, but only about one-tenth the time of the conventional sink-float tests was required."

To quickly and more reliably measure the alignment and deflection of mine guides used to run skips and cages into a mine shaft. The Problem Conventional mine guide alignment measuring systems require the use of a plumb bob and tape measure. This method is not only laborious, but it is time consuming as well. Approach Aware of the drawbacks of the current measuring method, the Bureau of Mines designed a self-contained instrument system that can accurately perform vertical guide alignment and deflection measurements by remote control. How It Works The Bureau-developed instrumentation system, called the Guide Alignment Measuring System (GAMS), is based on conventional mechanical electronics using inclinometers and displacement transducers. The instrumentation system is attached to an operating skip or cage where it functions as a completely self-contained measurement system, operating in conjunction with nor-mal travel of the skip or cage. An on-board tape recorder or a mini-computer with memory can be used to record all telemetry.

In its investigation of deposits of strategic minerals, the Bureau of Mines did some diamond drilling at the Almedia deposit In an endeavor to find an additional source of supply of lead and zinc. It is reported that in 1816, lead and zinc minerals were found in the limestone quarries near the boundary line between Scott and Center townships. In an attempt to develop these minerals in paying quantities, an alit was driven for several rods into a bluff Just west of the present Almedia mine, This is believed to be the Web mine, mentioned briefly by Parker Cleaveland in 1816. In 1901 the Almedia mine was developed by an open cut and three shafts. The hoisting shaft at the time of drilling by the Bureau of Mines was sounded to a depth of 115 feet. A concentrating plant reportedly made shipments to Hamburg, Germany, for reduction. The deposit is in a somewhat slaty limestone. The ore occurs in a northeast fracture zone along the strike of the limestone and dips to the southeast. Old miners state that the ore appeared as large chunks of galena and sphalerite. In 1949, to investigate the downward extension of the oreshoot, the Bureau of Mines drilled four holes aggregating 1,126.3 feet.

The Bureau of Mines performed laboratory research into the effects of a barium-based fuel additive (the "postflame" type) on diesel particulate matter (DPM) emissions. The 5.6-L, six-cylinder test engine is typical of types certifiable for use in underground mines. Test parameters consisted of additive concentration and engine loads, speed, and air intake restriction. DPM emissions, including condensed volatiles, were measured gravimetrically. Also measured were gaseous emissions including carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons. The fuel additive was effective, reducing DPM up to 75 pct, when used at a concentration of 0.09 wt pct (one-fourth of the concentration recommended by the manufacturer). The additive was most effective at the highest fuel-air ratios, reducing DPM from 400 mg/m3 for untreated fuel to 120 mg/m3. At light loads, 25 pct of full rated, no DPM reductions were measured. Based on these results, the additive is recommended for use in diesel fuel, at a concentration of 0.09 wt pct, to power underground mining equipment as long as certain conditions are met: that a beneficial DPM reduction is verified, that the minimum required quantity of additive is used, and that potential adverse effects such as increased nitrogen oxides are checked.

For 1991, the aggregate value of world international export trade in mineral commodities was roughly estimated at $685 billion in current 1991 dollars. The estimated level was about 6 % higher than that for 1990, but still more than 3 % below the record high set in 1980, and the year was the fifth in a row in which the value of exported minerals advanced. Table 8 provides a data series for the estimated value of world export trade in all mineral commodities from 1979 through 1991, as well as a breakdown of this total into fuel and non fuel commodities. The data shown are based on the historically more traditional and realistic (from the viewpoint of data availability) practice of reporting trade values for the year before the year of review. Despite the considerable increase in the dollar value of mineral commodity exports, their share of total export merchandise trade declined to 19.1 % in 1990 from 19.7% in 1989. At 19.1 %, this share was very near the recent year record low of 19.0% reached in 1988. Comparable 1991 figures were not available in time for inclusion here, but it is expected that the mineral commodity share of the total will be little altered from that of 1990.

On January 1, 1960 there were 310 petroleum refineries in the United States, with a crude-oil capacity of 9,901,424 barrels daily, according to the Bureau of Mines' annual survey. Compared with a year ago, this represents a net decrease of three in the number of refineries and an increase of 81,578, barrels per day in crude-oil throughput capacity. Continuing the trend to fewer units with greater individual throughput, the capacity of the average refinery in the United states increased during 1959 from 31,373 barrels per day to 31,740 barrels per day. Compared with the previous year, total crude-oil capacity of refineries on January 1, 1960 was lower in the Appalachian No. 1, Other Rocky Mountain, and Texas Gulf refinery districts. All other districts showed slight increases in capacity. At the beginning of 1960 the industry had under construction facilities that would increase the crude-oil capacity in the United States by 70,947 barrels per day. This was the smallest capacity increase under construction at the beginning of the year since 19460 Included in this construction of additional capacity were two new refineries, one in Michigan and another in Hawaii. In addition, the industry was constructing facilities to replace 50,250 barrels per day of existing crude-oil capacity.

A mineral survey of a 12,350-acre portion of the 13,150-acre Juniper Creek Wilderness Study Area (WSA) in southwestern Idaho was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1984. The area is entirely underlain by thick flows of Banbury Basalt. Rhyolitic tuff of Little Jacks Creek is exposed in the walls of the Owyhee River canyon beneath the basalt. Minor units of lacustrine sediment occur between the volcanic layers. No mines or claims occur in the area, and no mineralized zones were found. The study area is covered by oil and gas leases or lease applications; there has been no known exploration.

"The Workman's Compensation Law of Indiana, enacted in 1915, amended in 1917, 1919, 1923, and 1927, and in 1929 named the Indiana Workmen's Compensation Act of 1929, provides for a weekly compensation for disability due to accidents of 55 per cent of the average weekly wage of the employee, to start on the eighth day of disability. Compensation is computed from a maximum and minimum weekly wage of $30 and $16, respectively. Thus, the maximum weekly compensation is $16.50 and the minimum $8.80; the total compensation paid is not to exceed $5,000.In addition to the compensation the employer is required to pay all medical, surgical, hospital, and nurse fees for a period of 30 days and may be required to pay such fees for an additional 30 days at the direction of the Industrial Board of Indiana. In the case of fatalities the employer must contribute $100 toward funeral expenses.The law also stipulates that ""the employer shall keep a record of all injuries, fatal or otherwise, received by his employees in the course of their employment,"" also that the employer shall report within one week of their occurrence all accidents that cause either the death of the employee or the loss of more than one day's work. However, no standard form is furnished or required by the industrial board on which the employer shall keep a record of accidents, neither is he required to report the time of return to work of the injured employee unless the period of disability exceeds seven days and the accident thus becomes compensable. Hence, no record is kept of noncompensable accidents other than the first report sent to the industrial board by the employer.If the employer were required to keep a complete and concise record of all accidents, in duplicate, on a special form either furnished or required by the board, giving all of the essential data in regard to the accidents, and if he were required to submit a copy of this record to the board at the end of the fiscal year, the data thus assembled would not only be of material assistance to the board, particularly in making up its annual report, but would also furnish information of much value in the study of accident causes and what may be done to remove them.Those industries that have made marked progress in reducing accidents keep such records, as it is only through a full knowledge of how accidents occur that intelligent steps can be taken to prevent their recurrence. Unfortunately, the mining industry as a whole in Indiana has not kept pace with many other industries in reducing accidents, and it is urged as an aid to improvement that a thorough and complete record of mining accidents be kept."

This report presents a discussion of the spectra of 39 condensed thiophenes in which the structure includes at least 1 benzene ring. The vibrational bands present in three regions of the infrared spectra of these thiophenes were interpreted by comparing the similarities of the spectra of condensed thiophenes with the spectra of substituted benzenes. In the overtone-combination region 23 of the 39 condensed thiophenes had spectra which contained sufficient detail to be usable for correlating this region of the spectrum with the appropriate benzene spectrum. In the in-plane deformation region it was possible to make correlations for the vibrations of 18 of the 39 condensed thiophenes whose infrared spectra were studied. In the out-of-plane deformation region the C-H out-of-plane vibrations for hydrogen on benzene rings in the condensed thiophenes can be correlated using known data from substituted benzenes.

The Rex mine is one of several zinc deposits in Ozark and Howell Counties, Mo. It is the second of these deposits investigated by the Bureau of Mines in an effort to demonstrate reserves of sulfide ore underlying the shallow carbonate ores from which the district's major production has come. The initial investigation was made during 1945-46 on the Alice mine, Ozark County, Mo.21 The investigation reported herein was conducted during 1947. The Rex open pit is about 250 feet long, 100 feet wide, and about 25 feet deep (average). Three caved shafts are evident in the bottom of the pit, but the extent of the workings from these shafts is not known. The Bureau of Mines drilled five churn-drill holes in and around the Rex pit to test the grade and the vertical and lateral extent of the deposit. Two of the holes indicate notable zinc mineralization ranging from less than 1 to more than 10 percent metallic zinc, but largely in the oxidized condition.

Electrical conductivities and densities of molten fluoride systems were measured as functions of the melt temperature and composition. For any given mixture, the two properties change linearly with temperature. Three alkali metal fluorides were selected as solvents for melts of the type LiF-, NaF-, and KF-MFx, where M is a metal selected from the alkali metal or alkaline earth groups, or from the lanthanide or actinide series of elements, and x = 1-4. Heats of activation for conductance were calculated from the experimental data and varied from 2.3 to 9.2 kcal/mole at 1,000° C. Some relation between position in the phase diagram and the conductivity changes was suggested.

The Bureau of Mines undertook a research program to insure an adequate supply of iron raw materials for future iron and steel making needs. A sample was obtained of oxidized taconite from the western Mesabi Range in Minnesota, and the metallurgical response of the taconite to beneficiation by a process that included selective flocculation-desliming-cationic flotation was evaluated. The sample contained 35.3 pct iron and represented approximately 2 billion tons of crude material. Selective flocculation and flotation were evaluated in a pilot plant with a feed rate of 900 Ib/hr. Concentrates averaging 61.7 pet iron and 5.1 pet silica were obtained, with an accompanying iron recovery of 67.2 pet. About 83 pct of the process water requirements were reclaimed from the slime and froth tailing and then recycled.

1. The Pocahontas No. 3 and Pocahontas No. 6 ere the two most important beds in Mercer County from the standpoint of present production and recoverable reserves. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 188 million short tons as of January l, 1953. Of this total, 80 million short tons are in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to make an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.
