In spite of this ;;renter use, very little consideration has been given to the hazard that might be occasioned by the toxic vapors of mercury unavoidably spilled' of otherwise exposed to the atmosphere during the normal procedure of laboratory open at ions. A simple visual examination ).'.' son-,, r° the laboratories reveal the presence of a considerable quantity of mercury in the cracks of floors, on work tables, and on ark, around equipment stands. Usually this mercury is contaminated with oil3/ and dirt so that it remaining in a finely divided state and a ;mall amount pre presents a relatively large surface for evaporation. "Domestic Situation:The greatly increased use of lithopone as a base for paints, particularly for interior use, has timulated the demand for barytes to such a degree that the supply cannot keep pace with the demand. Lithopone is an artificially prepared compound composed of about 70 per cent barium sulphate and 30 per cent zinc sulphide, precipitated together. Its most important use is in paint, but it is also used in oilcloth, linoleum, rubber goods, shade cloth, etc.Prior to the war large quantities of barytes were imported from Germany, but during the war imports were negligible, domestic production increased very greatly and is still increasing. Ground barytes as used in paints/ formerly regarded as an adulterant, but now it is generally recognized as a valuable paint constituent. Mile domestic sources have expanded rapidly they have not overtaken the demand and there is need for still greater expansion. Stocks are low, little is being sold on the open market, and prices are high. Since barytes is a gangue mineral associated with metallic ores now being mined in the west, it is suggested that more attention be given to its recovery as a by-product.The following tables compiled from reports of the U.S. Geological Survey and the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce, indicate the growth of domestic consumption."

A high-Btu gas was made at the Bruceton, Pa., laboratories of the Bureau of Mines to demonstrate the feasibility of using the gas as a nonpolluting fuel for automobiles. The pilot plants at Bruceton were revised to combine the processes of coal gasification, gas purification, and catalytic methanation in one overall system. Tests in the Bureau's test automobiles at Bartlesville, Okla., showed the Synthane gas was less polluting than natural gas.

The Bureau of Mines analyzed the structure of a high-grade metallurgical coke, carbonized at different temperatures in the range 500° to 1,000° C, through X-ray diffraction studies. Growth in the crystallite size with increasing coking temperature was calculated from profile analysis and compared with values obtained from the radial distribution function. The carbonization temperature appeared to have little influence upon the stack height, whereas the layer diameters more than doubled in size between 500° and 1,000° C. These results are comparable to those obtained from other studies of poorer quality cokes.

Physiol. 13): L165-Ll 70, 1995.-Infiammation and fibrosis subsequent to the inhalation of certain mineral dust particles has been suggested to result from the activation of eicosanoid synthesis by the alveolar macrophage (AM). To determine if surfactant modifies dust-induced generation of eicosanoids by the AM, we evaluated the effect of the surfactant lipid dipalmitoyl lecithin (DPL) on the production of eicosanoids by rat AM exposed to respirable silica dust in vitro. During the first 24-h exposure period, DPL alone significantly increased basal production of eicosanoids but completely inhibited silica-induced thromboxane A2 synthesis. In contrast, leukotriene B4 (LTB4 ) production was only partially reduced by DPL. During a second 24-h exposure period, LTB4 production in response to the highest dose of silica remained significantly elevated in the presence of DPL. Similar results were obtained when the surfactant preparation Survanta was evaluated. These results suggest that 1 ) DPL and Survanta independently activate AM eicosanoid production, 2) DPL and Survanta modulate the response of the AM to silica dust, and 3) L TB4 may be the most important eicosanoid mediator of the long-term effects of silica dust exposure on lung pathophysiology. THE OXYGENATED METABOLITES of arachidonic acid (AA) (here collectively termed eicosanoids) have been implicated as important regulators of lung physiology and are thought to be involved in pathophysiological sequelae such as acute respiratory distress syndrome, asthma, and the pulmonary complications of sepsis (20). This role is manifested through both direct effects on lung physiology as well as through an indirect modulatory effect on the release of other mediators of lung injury, in particular profibrotic cytokines such as the interleukins and tumor necrosis factor (15). Recently, exaggerated eicosanoid production by both the alveolar macrophage (AM) and the type II epithelial cell has been demonstrated to result from the exposure of these cells to several particulates, including crystalline silica (quartz) dust (5, 9, 17). These observations have led to the suggestion that eicosanoids play a major role in the etiology of pneumoconioses.Another secretory component of the pulmonary environment, surfactant, has been shown to modulate crucial AM functions, such as bactericidal activity and the recruitment of circulating immune cells (25). Indeed, an important feature of the lung's reaction to inhaled mineral dust is an increase in surfactant production, perhaps as a compensatory or protective response (1, 16). In addition, the alteration of the surface properties of mineral dust by surfactant or its components has been shown to influence the biochemical response of the AM to the dust, perhaps by altering the surface charge of the dust particle (11, 29, 32). And recently, Wallace et al. (28) have shown that the coating of mineral dust with surfactant, and its subsequent removal by lysosomal phospholipase, unmasks differences in dust cytotoxicity that are not apparent when AM are exposed to uncoated dust. Thus it appears that the inclusion of surfactant in in vitro exposure studies may be important in evaluating both the absolute levels of eicosanoid production by the normal and dust-exposed AM and the temporal relationship between dust exposure and the production of inflammatory mediators by the AM. Therefore, we characterized the effects of the surfactants dipalmitoyl lecithin (DPL; the primary lipid component of natural surfactant) and Survanta (a commercially available surfactant derived from bovine lung) on basal and silica-induced AM eicosanoid production during two 24-h periods after exposure to dust particles to both allow the enzymatic removal of surfactant from the particle surface and evaluate the k"

This is one of a series of papers dealing with mining methods and costs prepared under the sponsorship of end in cooperation with the United States Bureau of Mines. The mining methods described in this paper are those used in one of the large mines producing fluorspar in the Kentucky-Illinois fluorspar field, located in southern Illinois and western Kentucky on the Ohio River. The occurrence of ore and the methods of wining are similar to those in other mines in the district; therefore information regarding methods and the results obtained should be of interest. Improvements in methods have been made as experience developed the need of them. The trine is situated at Rosiclare, Ill., on the Illinois Central Railroad, and shipments are also made b r barge on the Ohio River.

ALTHOUGH the contribution of Algeria, including the Sahara, to the local economy and to world mineral supply was small for many years, the spectacular development of an important petroleum and natural-gas industry has changed the position of the country. In 1963 there were decreases in output of most mineral commodities, however oil and gas production forged ahead and established new records. The impact of adverse market conditions and especially the competition from lower cost producing areas was felt by both the metals and nonmetals industries. This and the general economic conditions related to the recovery of the country following the years of strife attending its emergence as an independent state combined to hold back production and development commensurate with resources. The principal events of the year were in the petroleum sector and included the first commercial production from several new fields, some new discoveries, the virtual completion of the first petroleum refinery in the country, and installation of additional pipelines. Progress was made toward the further utilization of the vast resources of natural gas and the provision of additional transportation and refining facilities. In the mining domain the government took over two iron-mining operations, and progress was made towards expanding production of phosphate rock and determining methods of upgrading the Tindouf Iron ores. Completion of the iron and steel plant near Bone was further delayed. The only coal mine reportedly closed down in late 1963.

The computer program XRF4 was designed by the Bureau of Mines to provide for the calculation of several different interelement correction procedures in X-ray fluorescence analysis, including Lachance-Traill, Rasberry-Heinrich, and Claisse-Quintin procedures. The program was written in the BASIC language for timesharing application, and a conversational interaction with the computer is employed during operation. This report presents test problems using data for iron-nickel-chromium alloys and aluminum alloys and directions for use of the program.

During the course of the work: it was found desirable to investigate the sensitizing action of nitrostarch in mixtures of ammonium nitrate containing low percentages of this material. Data were derived as to the sensitivity to decomposition by heat and the completeness of detonation and,of detonation of straight ammonium nitrate, as compared with ammonium nitrate-nitrostrarch mixtures containing 1 to 10 per cent of nitrostarch.The ammonium nitrate was a sample of coated material obtained from the salvage of amatol shells. As part of its effort to develop ways to maximize resource recovery, the Bureau of Mines investigated the extraction of vanadium from Western phosphate beneficiation tailings with H2S04 and/or H3P04. Dissolution of the vanadium was accomplished by digesting a mixture of acid and a 50-pet-solids, tailings-water slurry. In the most effective method investigated, vanadium and phosphorus were leached by digesting the slurry at a constant boiling temperature (1000-1100 C) in a stirred reactor. In batch tests, maximum vanadium dissolution was 95 pet. In continuous-circuit tests designed to further evaluate vanadium dissolution at con-stant boiling temperature in a continuously stirred reactor, vanadium dissolution ranged from 70 to 85 pet. An economic evaluation of the process demonstrated that H2S04 consumption is the major cost factor. Based on the value of the vanadium product with no allowance for a phos-phate product, the cost of producing the V205 is more than twice its value. The potential for profit would depend upon the value of the phosphate fertilizer produced from the impure H3P04 remaining after vanadium extraction.

"INTRODUCTION As a byproduct of its mineral investigation program, the Bureau of Mines has developed a number of operating devices and techniques worthy of note. This paper, prepared under the direct supervision of Paul T. Allsman, chief, Salt Lake City Division, Branch, and under the general supervision of Lowell B. Moon, chief, Mining Branch, reports upon one such device. A simple device has been developed for measuring angles of deviation from the horizontal as recorded on a glass tube by acid etching. The device has facilities, also, for measuring the angle between the long axis of the ellipse and the north-south reference points established by a Maas compass or from an established axial lamina, on the tube, which was ori¬ented to a specific direction in the hole by rod alinement.The device was found accurate within half a degree on repeated orientations of the same tube. However, the degree of accuracy is dependent on the accuracy of personal manipulation in orienting the tube to the correct plane."

The problem of disposing of' petroleum wastes is not easy to solve, and although many operators are to be commended for the efforts they have made, much work remains to be done before the problem can be considered solved. Petroleum wastes include emulsions of petroleum and brine or mixtures of petroleum and sand that cannot be "broken down" or treated economically by known methods of separating petroleum from deleterious matter; crude petroleum that escapes from pipe lines, fittings, and tanks because of holes in the lines, leaky connections, or some accident; and oil-saturated materials that accumulate accidentally or otherwise an the normal operation of an oil-producing property.

A linear array of shot and gage holes 30 feet deep in a granite outcrop was used to compare the size and shape of radial strain pulses produced in the rock when short cylindrical charges of cast composition B were detonated axially or at one end. The axially detonated charges produced radial strain pulses that had shorter rise times and larger peak strain than the strain pulses produced by end detonated charges.

The blast -hole method for drilling and breaking ground is not new to the mining industry . For several years it has been used rather extensively in Canada , particularly in the gold mines , where it was first developed and where the major advances in the technique as applied to present - day mining problems have been made . At present , 40 mines in Canada and the United States are using the method in one form or another , and from all indications its use will increase in the future . In two California mines , blast -hole diamond drilling is now used for a part of or for all stoping operations , and in one of these it is used to some extent in development work . At the Mountain Copper Co.'s Hornet mine in Shasta County, about 50 percent of the pyritic sulfide ore produced is mined by the blast - hole method , and the U. S. Vanadium Corp. mines 80 percent of the ore produced at its Pine Creek tungsten mine in Inyo County by this method . At Pine Creek , long -hole drilling and blasting is used for mining pillars also , and in pre - stoping development . The blast -hole diamond - drilling method is not applicable to all types of ore bodies . A third property in California , the El Dorado Limestone Company , El Dorado County, tried the method for several months in 1943 and 1944 , but , owing to certain factors that greatly increased mining cost , the company soon returned to conventional mining methods .

A reduction roasting/magnetic separation/flotation process for beneficiating oxidized taconite from the western Mesabi iron range in Minnesota was evaluated in a Bureau of Mines research program to insure an adequate supply of raw materials for future ironmaking and steelmaking needs. The research was performed on a sample containing 35.4 pct iron and representing a deposit of approximately 2 billion tons of raw materials. An average of 1,419 lb of oxidized taconite and 37 lb of lignite reluctant per hour were fed to a 35 -foot rotary kiln in which the iron oxides were converted to artificial magnetite. The kiln was heated with pulverized lignite and natural gas. Most of the dust collected from the kiln exhaust gas was pelletized and recycled to the kiln. Magnetic separation and cationic flotation of the roasted material in a 900-lb/hr pilot plant produced a concentrate analyzing 67.9 pct iron and 4.9 pct silica and containing 69.2 pct of the iron in the kiln feed.

Relative enthalpies of high-purity disodium hexatitanate (Na2Ti6013) were measured at the Bureau of Mines to provide new thermodynamic data needed to advance the technology of materials. Measurements from 298.15 to 1,478 K were made by drop calorimetry with a copper block. Tabulated values are listed for the standard relative enthalpy, heat capacity, en-tropy, and Gibbs energy function between 298.15 and 1,500 K. Enthalpy data are also given in equation form and are combined with thermodynamic data from the literature to derive values of standard enthalpies of formation, Gibbs energies of formation, and logarithms of the equilibrium constants of formation. Similar calculations were made for the reaction of Na20 with Ti02.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study to evaluate the effect of underground mining conditions on the activation of automatic sprinkler heads. Sprinklers were exposed to liquid fuel fires in a rectangular tunnel at airflows of 0, 45, 90, 150, and 250 m/min to determine the effect of ventilation and fire size on the time to activation. As the airflows were increased, the time to activate the sprinklers for a given fire size increased. Also, as the fire size increased, the activation time decreased. Temperature profiles of the tunnel showed that the maximum temperature near the roof was shifted downstream as the airflow increased. Experiments to determine the effect of rated activation temperature and response time index (RTI) value on activation time showed that the time to activate increased with increasing activation temperature, and decreased with decreasing RTI value. Exposure to the mine environment showed little effect on the activation times in large-scale experiments, and no significant effect in laboratory experiments. The results showed that airflow can have a significant effect on the activation times of automatic sprinklers. This needs to be considered in the design of effective sprinkler suppression systems for ventilated areas.
