"INTRODUCTION In the course of a general investigation of mines and mineral deposits in the Upper Mississippi lead and zinc field, attention of the Bureau of Mines was first directed to the Coker mines area by the presence of large tonnages of old mill tailings containing economically recoverable percentages of lead and zinc. Later, the results of extensive geologic studies of the area were presented to the Bureau of Mines by the Federal Geological Survey, directing attention to the possibility of extending the known ore limits of the area to the north and northeast of the old Coker No. 1 mine workings.With this end in view, the Bureau of Mines undertook a program of churn drilling and sampling. This report describes the work done and presents the data obtained during the period of the Bureau of Mines investigation.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The mechanical properties of coal are often represented by the orthotropicmaterial model, which consists of nine elastic constants. The material symmetries involved are found in coal primarily because of the natural process by which it was formed. In this thesis the material properties of five U.S. coals, as obtained from cubical testing, are examined, using as a basis for comparison the assumption of the orthotropic material model. An analysis is performed on each set of coal material data in order to examine its conformability to other, less complex material models, these being the transversely isotropic model consisting of five elastic constants and the 'isotropic model consisting of two elastic constants. In addition, the material properties of two American shales are analyzed, based on the assumption that they comply with the transversely isotropic model. An analysis similar to that performed on the coal material is applied to the shale in order to determine the conformity of its material properties to the isotropic model.

Progress of Bureau of Mines research related to oil and gas during the past fiscal year has been marked by the publication of more than 40 reports on the various phases of the work . These include papers dealing with the production of oil and gas , transportation of gas , chemistry and refining of petroleum , thermodynamic properties of hydrocarbons , and the processing and utiliza- tion of helium . As an additional service to Pennsylvania oil operators , a new suboffice was opened in Bradford , Pa . , during the year . With this addition , the work of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Branch of the Bureau of Mines is now conducted in two large stations , the Petroleum Experiment Station , Bartlesville , Okla . , and the Petroleum and Oil Shale Experiment Station , Laramie , Wyo . , and three field offices and laboratories at San Francisco , Calif . , Dallas , Tex . , and Franklin, Pa., and two suboffices, Wichita Falls, Tex., and the newly opened suboffice at Bradford, Pa. In addition, this Branch operates large-scale helium-production plants in Texas, Kansas, and New Mexico, and maintains ex- tensive helium-bearing gas reserves in Texas and New Mexico. All helium opera- tions are supervised from headquarters at Amarillo, Tex. A small headquarters staff is in Washington, D. C. A backward glance at the road traveled during the past several years by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Eranch of the Bureau of Mines brings out a general background for the events of the fiscal year 1949. Throughout the fiscal year 1945, the activities of the Branch were still mainly concerned with such war activities as making special field studies for the Petroleum Adminis- tration for War, finding ways of increasing rates of production, and supplying data pertaining to the manufacture of aviation and jet-propulsion fuels. A period of adjustment came in 1946, characterized by a turning from war to peace procedures and efforts to give wide distribution to technical facts ob tained in wartime research; also, there came a realization that the demands of war had broadened the horizons of research. This was emphasized in 1947, when a peacetime program was restored, based upon the long view of the Bureau's place as a research agency in oil and gas. Close attention was given to tech- nical detail in 1948, and emphasis was placed on maintaining a balance between the industrial need for technical knowledge and Governmental-research possi- bilities in the fields of (1) withdrawal of petroleum from natural deposits, (2) utilization of petroleum and its products, and (3) commercial utilization of helium. Studies of petroleum production and utilization and helium production and utilization are the normal functions of the Branch. These functions (sometimes expressed in different words) have been the mainstay of this organization since initiation of the work. The details of approach vary with changing conditions, but, fundamentally, the functions have been the same in both peace and war. The work of the past fiscal year has emphasized the advantages that accrue when Government and industry join in a wise use of technical and scientific knowledge gained through research. Outstanding evidence of the beneficial results of cooperative effort by the Bureau of Mines and various organizations is found in the following typical examples, the details of which are discussed in the body of this report. Working in close cooperation with operators along the Gulf Coast, the Natural Gasoline Association of America, and the National Association of Cor- rosion Engineers, the Bureau found, through field testing, that corrosion protection by means of chromates in high-pressure gas-condensate wells costs less than $1 per million cubic feet of gas produced. Laboratory experiments to measure the corrosion effects of carbonic and propionic acids on various steels and alloy steels gave data that will serve as guides in the selection of new. materials for the construction of well equipment to be tested by industry under actual service conditions.

This report summarizes the Bureau of Mines noise-control research program from 1972 to 1982. Each segment of the mining industry--under- ground coal, underground hardrock, surface mining, and processing plants--has different noise-control problems because of vast differences in working procedures, equipment, and workplace design. The Bureau has identified the most serious noise problems in each segment and has developed strategies for attacking these problems. This publication points out the need for noise control in the mining industry, discusses Federal regulations governing worker exposure to noise, and describes the Bureau's overall approach to mining noise- control research. It traces the history of noise overexposure in each segment of the mining industry and discusses the major noise sources. It provides detailed information on noise-control research efforts in the Bureau's major areas of emphasis, including the results of these efforts. Finally, the report discusses the Bureau's future role in research on mining noise control, emphasizing the need to expend more effort on long term in-house investigations into the noise problems that have been identified in past programs as the most serious ones.

Data presented on the physical characteristics of the reservoir oil, Aneth field, represent the initial phase of a study of Paradox basin reservoir oils being made by petroleum engineers of the Federal Bureau of Mines, Petroleum Research Center, Laramie, Wyo. The purpose of the study is to determine the original reservoir-oil characteristics in several important new discoveries in the Paradox Basin and to investigate correlations between the properties of these reservoir oils and structural or areal position within the basin, If migration is limited and oil accumulates near its source, then it seems probable that few differences should be found in the composition and characteristics of reservoir oils occurring in given age rocks and within the confines of a geological basin. Within these limits, conditions that effected the formation of oil and its transfer from parent to storage rocks probably were rather uniform in an area the size of most of our geological basins. However, if oils should migrate considerable distances, it seems logical to expect that the relative quantities of gas and liquid components may differ in traps occurring along the direction of migration, corresponding with the theory of differential entrapment (5).4/

In the fiscal years 1946 and 1947 the number of mine explosions decreased compared with the preceding years. However, the loss of life was so serious during the fiscal year 1947 the period when the Government administered bi- tuminous-coal and lignite mines that from April to June 1947 extraordinary measures were taken in mines then under Government possession to obtain com- pliance with provisions concerning rock dusting, ventilation, and blasting that had not been followed. The great loss of life in explosions during the fiscal year 1947 as compared with 1944, 1945, and 1946 is not easy to explain, but the necessity for maintaining adequate protection has been definitely demonstrated. Management, workers, and inspection agencies alike must keep the mines reasonably safe against explosions or allow them to lapse into a condition where chance is the principal protection against disaster. The at- tention given to protecting coal mines and the men employed in them against mine fires, following the disastrous fires in 1944 and 1945, has at least tem- porarily controlled this hazard loss of life from coal-mine fires was re- duced to 1 fatality in 1947. The number of fires was also less, and progress has been made in reducing the heavy losses in both life and property from un- derground coal-mine fires that occurred in the two years mentioned. Fatalities from mine explosions during the past 6 fiscal years, July 1942 to June 1947, totaled 674, and there were 149 explosions; during the preceding 6 years there were 655 fatalities in 132 explosions. The 6 fiscal years 1942- 47 cover the active period of Federal coal-mine inspection. During the fiscal year 1947, there were 154 fatalities from explosions compared with 58 during the fiscal year 1946, 64 in 1945, 94 in 1944, 152 in 1943, and 152 in 1942.

This report is submitted in accordance with the provisions of the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of April 5, 1944 (30 U.S.C. 321-325, as amended), which require that: "The Secretary of the Interior shall render to Congress on or before the first day of January of each year a report on all operations under this Act." Owing to the broad scope of the content and the diversity of interests represented, the Annual Report for 1953 has been divided into two separate publications. Each has been published by the Bureau of Mines as a Report of Investigations, and the respective titles follow: R. I. 5043, Part I - Oil From Coal. R. I. 5044, Part II - Oil From Oil Shale. Identical in each report, the introduction summarizes research progress made in 1953 under the entire Synthetic Liquid Fuels program. The froth foam seal topping system is part of a system for remote sealing of mine passages using flyash transported pnuematically from the surface. Making the final 5 percent of the seal with a foamed-in-place fire retardant polyurethane reduces the required flyash volume by 50 percent and provides a more reliable seal. Foam components are held at the surface under proper conditions of temperature and pressure; then conveyed down the borehole through individual hoses and mixed at the bottom with a static mixer. The polyol component is pre-mixed with fluorocarbon-12 which, when released from system pressure in the mixer, boils and causes the foam to expand. Difficulties in handling this particular foam formulation are offset by a flame spread index well below the 25 level by ASTM E-162 normally required for under-ground applications. Isocyanate, polyol (TDI) and catalyst are conveyed to the downhole package by three separate lines. Five additional lines operate the valving and convey solvent so that the mixer and package lines can be flushed immediately after foaming. The eight-hose bundle is provided in segments of several lengths so that bore-hole depths can be matched. Cast-in-place plastic cylinders hold the bundle together and transfer the weight of the hose through a special quick-release clamp to the crane's wire rope. The downhole package and hose bundle are deployed using a specially designed winch and crane system capable of borehole deployment to 1500 feet.

One phase of Bureau of lines work in health and safety is promotion of the use of safe, satisfactory, and reliable respiratory protective devices. To insure that devices embodying these features will be available the Bureau has established schedules of minimum requirements for oxygen breathing apparatus, gas masks4/, supplied-air respirators (hose mask, air-line respirators, and abrasive blasting helmet hoods, or masks)5/, and dispersoid (dust, fume and mist) respirators6/. Approval test, of oxygen¬-breathing apparatus are conducted by the Safety Division; approval tests of other types of respiratory protective equipment are conducted by the Health Division. These divisions comprise the Health and Safety Branch.

The Bureau of Mines sponsored a study of the impact of changing technology on the demand for metallurgical coal and coke to 1985. Individual technologies were analyzed to determine what effect each had on the demand for and the consequent consumption of metallurgical coal and coke in the steel industry. The domestic steel industry demand for metallurgical coal and coke for the production of hot metal will probably increase through 1985. Formcoke if implemented on a worldwide basis could begin to supplant the U.S. export market for metallurgical coal. The major technologies that have contributed to the decline in demand for metallurgical coke per ton of hot metal are (1) the increased usage coupled with higher iron content of agglomerates, (2) modification of blast furnace practices such as high top pressures and blast temperatures, and (3) increases in the injection of supplemental fuels. The projected demand for metallurgical coal and coke under current technology for 1985 are 109.4 and 76.0 million tons, respectively. With future technology implemented, the demand for metallurgical coal and coke will be 82.0 and 56.9 million tons, respectively. The projected domestic demand for metallurgical coke could further decrease by as much as 15 to 20 million tons by 1985 if formcoking proves technologically and economically feasible.

The Bureau of Mines and the Alabama. Power Co. jointly conducted a first experiment in underground gasification of coal at Gorgas, Ala., during the fall and winter of 1946-47. This preliminary experiment showed that it was not difficult to maintain combustion of coal underground, and that coal in place could be completely gasified. It was noted that the high temperature developed by the gasification of coal in place brought about changes in overlying strata that appeared to be favorable to the process. The high temperatures caused the roof rock to become plastic, to expand, and to settle down on the mine floor directly behind the reacting coke face. These results were promising enough to warrant further investigation of the process. It was believed that if this action could be controlled properly with roofs of similar composition, it would tend to force the gas-making fluids underground against the coal faces. Plans for the second experiment were based in part on this favor-able roof action, and the successful operation of the planned initial straightline passages depended on this fact. Gorgas was chosen as the site for the second experiment for the following reasons: A tract of coal land of sufficient size was available and isolated from the main body of coal; the roof rock was similar in composition to that encountered in the first experiment; and the overlying strata were thick enough to eliminate some of the operating difficulties that had been encountered, In addition, power, water, and machine-shop facilities as well as an adequate supply of labor were available in this area, and the friendly cooperation of the Alabama Power Co. further recommended this site for the planned experiment.

In a previous report results were given and a method outlined whereby from a knowledge of the composition of the natural gas and of the inflammability limits of the individual constituents composing the natural gas, the limits of inflammability of natural gas and air mixtures could be closely calculated. This method is based on the application of Le Chatelier's law as modified by Coward, Carpenter and Payman, to apply to a mixture of any number of combustible gases. This law must not be used indiscriminately, because many exceptions have been found. For example, when ethylene, acetylene, hydrogen sulphide, or chlorinated hydrocarbons are present the law may not hold. For a discussion of the rally exceptions which have been found, reference should be made to a report by Coward and Jones. Before this method can be used the inflammable limits of the individual constituents must be known. Also, the composition of the complex combustible mixture, and representative mixtures besides, must be tested both experimentally and by calculation to prove whether Le Chatelier's law may be applied.

Electrical apparatus because of its flexibility and its adaptability to all classes of service has become essential to the mining industry. Hence the problem of providing electrical equipment that is safe for use in explosive mixtures of methane and air is of prime importance in coal mining. Ilwestigatorsand experiment stations early recognized this fact and much work has been done in the investigation and the development of electrical apparatus for use in atmospheres containing fire damp. The term "fire damp" as applied throughout this bulletin means an explosive mixture of methane and air. Direct-current motors and alternating-current motors of the slipring type when running usually give off electric arcs or flashes that will ignite fire damp. Other 'motors that ha,'e no moving electric contacts may become dangerous through accident, deterioration, or neglect. Auxiliary apparatus such as fuses, switches, rheostats, and controllers may arc, flash, or become heated to snch a degree that fire damp can be ignited. Such equipment is still more dangerous when worn or out of repair. In the United States the development of apparatus for use in gaseous mines has been associated largely with coal-cutting equipment run by electricity. This is undoubtedly due to the use of such equipment at the face of the mine workings, where the chance of igniting fire damp is necessarily greatest. One American manufacturer built a coal-cutting equipment of the totally inclosed type for use in firo damp atmospheres in 1903. Another built similar equipment with special protective devices in 1906, for export. During the years 1910 and 1911, the Bureau of Mines at its Pittsburgh experiment station conducted a preliminary investigation of the safety of such protection as was then in use or under consideration. Five motors were submitted for this investigation, each having somewhat different methods of protection. The results of this investigation were published in Bulletin No. 4G.a

Six different chemical explosives were detonated in a test series to com-pare their relative performance in granite. From 5 to 255 feet from the detonation point, strain, acceleration, and particle velocity were recorded and analyzed for amplitude and pulse shape. Strain energy was calculated from strain data, and displacement data were obtained from particle velocity data by integration. The results show that explosives which have a characteristic impedance more closely matching that of the rock generate larger peak amplitudes than explosives with a lower characteristic impedance. The results also show that as the ratio of characteristic impedance of exp1osive-to-rock approaches unity, more rock is crushed and a larger percentage of the avail-able explosive energy is transferred to the rock as seismic energy. The effect of characteristic impedance is shown to be greater than the effect predicted from acoustic theory and is believed to be indicative of shock wave effects at the explosive-rock boundary.

The deed of an Indian allottee whose mind was unsound, but who was not entirely without understanding, is voidable if made before the grantor's incapacity has been judicially determined; and a purchaser of the original grantee who interposes the defense of a bona fide purchaser has the burden of showing a purchase for value and on failure to do so can not claim the benefit of a bona fide purchaser. A deed conveying lands subject to an oil and gas lease under which the lessee had the right to drill or pay money in lieu of drilling at his option, and reserving to the grantor a share of the royalties under such lease, and expressly authorizing the grantee to lease the land for oil and gas purposes and to take the rentals, authorizes the grantee to extend the existing lease before the expiration thereof in consideration of the annual payment of money in lieu of drilling, as contemplated by the lease.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the significant coalbeds in Harrison County, W. Va. It is one in a series of Federal Bureau of Mines reports planned to determine coals suitable for the production of metallurgical coke, either as mined or after beneficiation. Over 6.5 million tons of coal was produced in Harrison County, W. Va., in 1958, of which over 3.7 million tons was cleaned mechanically in seven preparation plants. All of the coal cleaned was from the Pittsburgh bed. It has been estimated that more than 1,816 million tons of coal remains in the county in beds 12 inches or more thick. The Pittsburgh and Redstone beds were selected by the Bureau for a study based on current production rates and estimated minable reserves. Sample locations were selected following a study of the literature, conferences with mining engineers and mining company officials in the field, and examination of the available sites. Six samples were collected from the Pittsburgh bed, and three samples came from the Redstone bed, Float-and-sink tests of the samples collected from the Pittsburgh and Redstone beds showed that neither coal could be upgraded to a metallurgical fuel under the standards set up for this study, even after intensive preparation. Finer crushing of the samples moderately increased the yields and slightly reduced both the ash and the sulfur contents in the 1.30-specific-gravity float fractions. Finer crushing slightly decreased the yields in the 1.58-specific-gravity float fractions, whereas it reduced the sulfur content 0.11 percent for the Redstone sample and 0.46 for the Pittsburgh sample.

Searles Lake, CA, contains the largest known domestic tungsten resource. The brines in this near-dry lake bed, located in the Mojave Desert 130 mi northeast of Los Angeles, contain an estimated 135 MMlb of tungsten. However, the low concentration of tungsten (0.080 g/L W03) in the supersaturated brine makes selective tungsten extraction very difficult. Although many brine chemicals are extracted from the lake, tungsten recovery was an elusive goal prior to Bureau of Mines development of an ion-exchange technique. This publication describes the Bureau process. The following subjects are ad-dressed: ? The Searles Lake tungsten resource. ? General problems associated with tungsten recovery. ? Bureau research objectives. ? Synthesis of ion-exchange resins. ? Development of a two-stage ion-exchange tungsten extraction and concentration procedure. ? Product recovery and purification. ? Economic evaluation. Flowsheets for recovering three products (calcium tungstate, sodium tungstate, and tungstic oxide) are presented and evaluated, as well as a summary of the research effort and potential applications.

This publication covers the work of the Division of Coal Mine Inspection, Bureau of Mines, as performed under provisions of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act. It presents background information and data since 1952 when the Act became effective and includes up-to-date statistics for the calendar year 1962. During that year, approximately 9,704 coal mines were active in the United States, and the Bureau made 12,810 regular inspections. BACKGROUND The Federal coal-mine inspection program was established to carry out the provisions in Public Law 49, 77th Congress, (H. R. 2082) approved May 7, 1941. This act has since been amended as Title I, Advisory Powers Relating to Health and Safety Conditions in Mines, under Public Law 552, 82d Congress, approved July 16, 1952, which also included Title II, Prevention of Major Disasters in Mines. Public Law 552 is known as the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act.

As sponge iron is much like porous, coarse sand, it is a tempting material to use in place of coarse scrap iron as a precipitant of metals, for scrap iron is relatively awkward to handle and exposes only a small amount of surface to pregnant solutions. The results of the experiments described in this bulletin are largely a record of the behavior of sponge iron as a precipitant of lead and copper under laboratory conditions comparable to those that would obtain in a commercial plant were it attempted to secure the maximum contact of surface between solution and precipitant. Physically, the study is largely one of the rates of diffusion of the metal ions in the solutions and through the metallic coatings surrounding the sponge iron particles. The practical objectives are to remove completely the valuable metals from solution and at the same time to obtain a precipitate of good grade. In order to fulfill this latter requirement, the precipitant should be almost completely consumed. These practical ends are usually secured by having the two substances involved pass each other counter-currently-that is, in such a manner as to have the strongest precipitant in contact with the most impoverished solution, and vice versa. EXPERIMENTS WITH LEAD SOLUTIONS In nearly all of the schemes involving the leaching of lead from its ores the metal has been put into solution as the chloride, and fairly concentrated liquors have been employed. The solubility of lead under such conditions is comparatively small at best; the hot pregnant liquors from which the metal is to be precipitated are then made nearly saturated with respect to lead, and only a very small amount of acid is used. Therefore it was not as necessary to learn the behavior of the sponge iron in precipitating lead from solutions of widely differing composition as to learn under what conditions, and with what mechanisms, this precipitation might be carried out most readily.

Determining the change of stress in rock based on measurements of the deformation of a drill hole is a procedure that is increasing in popularity. A closely related procedure involves the applicat10n of this principle to determine the existing stresses in a rock medium, by cutting free (core drilling) an annulus containing the drill hole. In this Bureau of Mines report, expressions are derived from which one can calculate the stress ellipsoid--the three-dimensional change of stress, or the existing three-dimensional stress field, as the case may be. Study of these equations shows that the stress components in three dimensions can be determined by measurements in only two drill holes, and yields general principles that are useful in planning an efficient program of drilling and measurement. Procedures are given for calculating the least squares estimates of the stress components and their standard errors, and for evaluating or comparing calculated values by means of standard statistical inferences.
