Drilling and blasting is an every day, sometimes routine activity, that is always fraught with catastrophic capabilities. Under the best conditions it is hazardous, time consuming and expensive. Under the worst conditions it may be impossible to perform by any but the most skilled specialists. Under all conditions drilling and/or blasting jobs are relatively difficult and require specialized equipment, materials and skills that are uncommon. This paper reviews some-of the jobs and problems handled by one drilling and blasting specialist to show the many varied types of problems requiring the services of specialists.

This paper summarizes blasting accident data for over a quarter of a century (1978-2004) for all types of surface and underground mining operations in the United States. Although many billions of pounds of explosives and blasting agent have been used by the mining industry, the accident safety record has improved significantly in the past 25 years. Over the past decade, approximately 5 billion pounds of explosives and blasting agents were used annually in the United States. Coal mining has been and continues to be the dominant user of blasting agents.

There are more than 4,000 oil and gas structures present in the U. S. Gulf of Mexico. Approximately 100 structure removals occur each year and 66% of these are removed with explosives. From 1993-1995 an intensive study was conducted on the fish kill resulting from the explosive removal of 6 platforms off the Louisiana coast in water depths from 14-28 m (45-92 ft). After explosives were detonated, all floating fish and a sample of the dead fish which sank to the sea floor were collected.

Hercules Incorporated has developed and introduced a totally new non-electric delay blasting cap system which utilizes a low energy gas detonation to activate the caps. Unlike any other initiation system, there is no hole-to-hole connection other than empty plastic tubing until the blast is to be set off. Only at that time, when all personnel and equipment are in the clear, is the special gas mixture introduced through the tubing. The actual time of firing is completely under the control of the operator, by pressing the fire button on the blasting machine.

Burden of drill hole is third most sensitive parameter effecting the ground vibration in blasting apart from maximum charge per delay and distance. Various types of burdens can be seen in practical bench blasting situations. Burden can be expressed as drilled burden and initiation burden. Drill holes may have various front row burdens (toe burden), which may be different from the designed burden. In order to ascertain the impact of front row burden as well as the initiation burden on intensity of ground vibration and air overpressure experiments were conducted in sandstone overburden benches of an opencast coal mine and limestone quarry. Blast trials were carried out in cognisance of both drill and initiation burden while keeping all other parameters constant. Effect of front row burden was also extensively studied by keeping almost all other parameters constant. The results of the study reveal that there is substantial influence of front row burden on the vibration and air overpressure. The statistical analysis of vibration and air overpressure data with drilled burden and initiation burden gives significant evidence that the level of peak particle velocity of vibration (Vmax)) is reduced by reducing effective burden with modification of initiation. Data analysis carried out for air overpressure versus initiation burden shows that reducing effective burden with modification of initiation results in increasing the level of P. The study reveals a qualitative assessment of the influence of burden on the blast induced vibration and air overpressure. The study also recommends to modify the initiation pattern to reduce the effective burden in order to reduce the vibration, without disturbing the fragmentation.

Because of greatly increased timing accuracy, electronic detonator systems are a well-known and widely accepted major tool to control and reduce ground vibration. At a Southeastern quarry the authors found that the use of electronic detonators improved the reliability of the well known cubed root scaled distance equation for determining air blast. In addition, the authors noticed significant correlations between selected major peak particle velocity frequencies and air blast magnitudes. The major peak particle velocity frequency alone is a close approximation to air blast magnitudes. This relationship is not as significant or not always evident when standard pyrotechnic initiation systems are used.

The Vale’s Serra Sul mine, also known as S11D project, is one of the world’s largest open pit iron ore mines, located in Brazil’s Amazon region. The mine produces around 90 Mt of high-quality iron ore annually. Its unique orebody enabled the S11D project to adopt a truckless mining system with In-Pit Crushing and Conveying (IPCCs) for ore exploitation and waste stripping. The IPCCs system requires crushing the waste, mainly composed by the jaspilite lithology, and is also conveyed to waste deposits several kilometers away from the mine. Due to Amazon’s environmental restrictions, the project was designed with preliminary geological knowledge, leading to the installation of primary crushers not designed for the hardest jaspilite, with uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) up to 500 MPa. This resulted in low waste crushing performance, affecting stripping ratio and threatening future production. A project was developed to improve the fragmentation of the jaspilite, allowing higher waste IPCC production, and reducing the risk to the production due to low performance of waste crushing and conveying. The first challenge was the independence of the geological and the geomechanical models, while only the geological model was considered in blast designs, the geomechanical model describes six waste groups of jaspilite classified according to their strength. A new geological model was then created to incorporate the geomechanical classification, allowing different blasting design according to the rock strength of the jaspilite. The blasting pattern on most compact jaspilite was reduced 27%, from 22m² to 16m² in 9 7/8” diameter holes, with a proposed theoretical reduction of 23% of the P80, from 326mm to 250mm. The second challenge was the implementation of the new design, as this pattern size and the high powder factor (2.9 kg/m3) were paradigms for such a large iron ore mine. The measured results have shown 25% reduction of the P80, the crushing rate was increased by 17% (230t/h), saving around $2.4 million annually in crushing and conveying system maintenance.

Thunder strikes terror in the hearts of man and has since the advent of time. We all fear the unknown; even the Greeks created a god, THOR, to be responsible for the thunder and rain. Thunder, by itself, can't hurt anyone; it is simply hot air moving very fast. Thunder, however, is caused by lightning and lightning is what we need to fear and rightfully so. Annually, lightning kills hundreds of Americans, injures another 2,000, damages or destroys approximately 30,000 structures, 1 starts thousands of forest fires and strikes mine properties over 100,000 times.

D. in Marcona Mining Company, 12/12/1968, where in that investigation also worked Carlos Agreda Ph.D. as assistant of the mentioned inventor."

This paper will discuss the recent and on-going drill and blast optimization measures at the Sparkhule Limestone Quarry, which have resulted in a 44% reduction of drill and blast unit costs per ton of broken limestone. This amounts to approximately $240,000 of drill and blast saving per year at current annual production rates of about 2.5 million tons (2.3 million tonnes) total material shot. The reduction of drill and blast costs were accomplished by a detailed and controlled in-the-mine drill/blast experimentation and cost evaluation using 8 different blast pattern designs and shots totaling approximately 267,000 tons (242,200 tonnes) of shot and mucked material. A careful review of the geology of the deposit was performed to determine the different rock classification/strengths/structural properties and to adjust blast designs to optimize fragmentation for the different rock types. Equipment loading productivity and crusher throughput performance were monitored as part of the evaluation process to assure that an optimal fragmentation of broken rock was achieved with the new blast designs. The study included the review of bulk explosive and accessory selection criteria (ammonia nitrate/fuel oil mix - ANFO, mini prills (high density ANFO), sensitized and un-sensitized emulsions at a 30% emulsion/70% ANFO blend), blast pattern design, charge diameter and the cost of drilling. Laser profiling technology was used to assure proper bench heights, stemming and sub-drill footage and front row burdens. High speed photography, video and still photos were taken of the different designed shots to assist in the evaluation of the performance of each blast. Powder density checks, size distribution, back break, detonation velocity and pressure measurements were taken. Different borehole diameters were used for the drill optimization study and drilling cost and productivities determined. A detailed cost comparison between in-house blasting and complete shot service was prepared to evaluate if shot service is a cost effective alternative to current in-house loading and blasting including a review of the new and pending United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Fire Arms (ATF) regulations and associated owner costs/risks and potential benefit of shot service.

Question: When it comes to demolition projects, what could be more demanding than asking a blaster to explosively demolish a stubby, heavily-reinforced concrete structure in the heart of a third-world country? Answer: Asking them to fell only half. Such was the charge recently put forth to Controlled Demolition Group (CDG), Yorkshire, UK when they were called to Casablanca, Morocco to provide a stunning demolition effect for the upcoming Universal Pictures film Spy Game, starring Robert Redford and Brad Pitt. Director Tony Scott (True Romance, Enemy of the State) contacted the renowned demolition firm after seeing their work on television and receiving recommendations from explosives manufacturers. The film’s producers then asked the CDG team if they could bring down half of an apartment block as part of a dramatic suicide bomber sequence.

The Lafarge Ravena Cement Plant in Ravena, New York demonstrated continuous and extraordinary improvement in productivity during the past several years. The factors driving continuous improvement at the Lafarge Ravena Plant include: 1) Management techniques including regular scheduled and effective Blasting Optimization Team meetings. 2) A real time blasting database to guide blasting product and procedure decisions. Key decisions involved all levels of quarry and blasting supplier personnel and a close working relationship between production and blasting areas of expertise was demonstrated. 3) Blast optimization and optimization of quarry operating parameters such as blast location relative to crusher location, hours worked, etc.

During the last few years, there has been a flood of local, state, and Federal government regulations concerning blasting. Many of the laws and regulations were written by individuals who know little about explosives, the purpose of blasting, or blasting vibration and damage. I feel that the special interest groups responsible for some of these regulations are not trying to regulate blasting, but to stop it completely by unreasonable, non-flexible, regulations. The most recent being the Office of Surface Mining regulations that are already spreading to the quarry industry and will, no doubt, spread to all blasting involving disturbance of the surface.

Increasingly, electronic blast initiation systems are being made available to the mining and construction community, both in South Africa and internationally. Indeed, in some parts of the world, perhaps half a dozen electronic products are being used, with a choice also of shock tube, electric and fuse and igniter cord systems. As these developments have taken place, improvements have been made in safety, reliability and accuracy, so much so that high performances in all these areas are now expected. However, disadvantages often seen by customers, other than : higher price, are decreased user-friendliness and loss of flexibility.

"During a routine belt tightening of all cost centers, the management at the Martin County Coal Surface Mines, located in Martin County Kentucky felt that a thorough investigation of the drilling and blasting program could possibly pinpoint areas where the cost could be cut without sacrificing production. Upon close inspection of the drill benches it was noted that the actual layout of burden,spacing and stemming varied a bit from the actual blast design that the management had outlined for the blasters. This paper will outline the method of reducing the drilling and blasting cost at the Martin County Coal Operation."

Air transport is limited to 1.4 explosives on cargo aircraft and 1.4S classified explosives on passenger aircraft, so most samples cannot be transported by air. Ocean transport is a possibility, but due to stowage and segregation regulations of the IMDG code, a very expensive one. Road transport is often the only solution, but high explosives require special trucks with licensed drivers. The solution to these logistic problems is solved by creating a 1.4S (Class C) classification for all high explosives, when packed in special containment vessels.

This paper is a case study showing the assembly of available rock property parameters for the purpose of blast design. Blast optimization now includes subsequent milling and requires a full knowledge of the rock mass. Individual blast holes should be designed using all available data. The parameters include: geologic layer from diamond drilling, shovel performance, crushing plant experience from that area, drill monitoring, magnetic susceptibility from a downhole probe, size analysis history from digital image analysis, compressive strength tests of problem areas and cross hole sonic testing. Bedding thickness observed from drill core appear to have a strong influence on fragmentation.

Description of Project: The four photos show a chimney blasting operation in Vienna’s district of Floridsdorf on May 4 2011. The blasting was done with two types of charges. An internal charge provided a force of blast which resulted in 135 single electrical blasting caps initiated detonations on the basic ensured the straight collapse of the chimney. The preparation work was done by reserve force military engineers. The series of photos were shot by Elisabeth Zechmeister. She works in the Austrian DOD but not as a professional photographer; much more she did all activities in her spare time.

With the advance of science, rise of public interest in environmental matters, and continuing erosion of air quality, Federal and state regulators are demanding an increasing complex array of data concerning emissions produced by burning and detonating energetic materials. The U.S. Department of Defense, one of the world's largest consumers of energetic materials, now must characterize combustion products resulting from open burning/open detonation disposal operations. The catch-all phrase "below detection limits" no longer satisfies the regulators who now want testing to delve into the ppt level for volatile organic compounds and ppt level for semivolatile organic compounds.

Blasting activities in all four pits at Thunder Basin Coal's Black Thunder Mine are focused on cast blasting. With widths varying from 190 feet to 265 feet and bench heights varying from 90 feet to 175 feet, casting efficiencies vary with different geometry's. For example, the percent cast to final in the 200 foot pit is on the average higher than the 270 foot pit. The powder factors are somewhat higher in the narrower pits, thus increasing the cost of blasting. This leads to a very detailed look at the actual benefit of cast blasting and the associated cost of these benefits.
