"Recent advances in technology and the growing environmental concern have laid emphasis on the usage of fine clean coal. Coal fines are also generated in large amounts during various coal processing operations and are difficult to be treated, handled and disposed. Since most of the operations use water as the carrying medium, the fines so generated contain lot of moisture. Conventional technique for processing coal fines includes flocculation by a polymeric reagent followed by moisture removal using a rotary drum or a pressure plate filter, which produce a product with more than 30% moisture. Polymeric flocculants though required in small amounts, need high shear mixing for good performance and operate only in a narrow pH range. Moreover they increase the viscosity of the solution by many folds. Hence it becomes imperative to emulate newer methods for efficient fine coal processing. One such method is the novel use of microorganisms in coal processing.The present investigation deals with the utilization of two gram-positive microorganisms, Mycobacterium phlei and Bacillus subtilis, as bio flocculants and dewatering aids in fine coal processing. Preliminary characterization done on J-coal and M.phlei showed that they are negatively charged over most of the pH range. B.subtilis was found to possess positive charge below pH 4.7. The adhesion studies proved the high potential of microorganisms for adsorption to surfaces. Adhesion tests were conducted at various experimental conditions by varying parameters like pH and ionic strength of the suspension. Results obtained showed that adhesion is always higher in the presence of an electrolyte like KNO3 and most of the adhesion takes place in 15 minutes. With change in pH the amount of B.subtilis adhering on to J-coal remained almost constant and for M.phlei it decreased at higher pH values. Increase in ionic strength did not increase the adhesion of bacteria. Flocculation experiments confirmed the ability of the bacteria to act as bio flocculants. It was seen that about 98% of the coal settled in about 2 minutes on the addition of bacteria along with the addition of the electrolyte. The electrolyte was found to be indispensable for efficient flocculation of the coal suspension and for the attainment of a clear supernatant after flocculation. Also the optical micrographs revealed the formation of large, tight flocs when the electrolyte is present along with the bacteria. Further, flocculation tests were done in the pH range of 2-10 and the flocculation efficiency was found to be independent of pH."

"Karagedik Chromite Concentrator of the ETI Holding Co., which is located in Fethiye (south Turkey), has been producing chromite concentrate assaying 47-48 % Cr2O3 from the chromite ores containing 30-35 % Cr2O3 by using gravity separation methods since 1920. The tailings having 13-14 % Cr2O3, which had been removed from this plant, were accumulated at the stockpiles amounting about 1.2 million tons. In order to recover the ultra fine chromite particles from the Karagedik Concentrator tailings, the new process including Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation and column flotation, was developed and the Karagedik Research Pilot Plant based on this process was commissioned in 2000. At this plant, the final concentrates assaying 46-48% Cr2O3 were produced and overall plant recoveries are about 60-65%.At the chromite concentrators using gravity separation methods, if their material size is about minus 1.0 mm, chromite particles especially pass to fine fractions according to their mineralogical structures and the ore-genesis (Önal and Güney, 1990). Generally, after crushing and grinding, the shaking tables and spirals are used at the chromite concentrators; therefore fine size chromite particles (-0.038 mm) are removed as tailings. Cr2O3 content of the -0.1 mm size fraction with 52.3% of the total amount is 19.58 % with Cr2O3 distribution of 82.6%.In order to upgrade the minus 0.1 mm size fraction of the tailings, assaying about 20% Cr2O3, Karagedik Research Pilot Plant (KRPP), which includes Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separator (WHIMS) and Column Flotation units, was installed by Istanbul Technical University (ITU), Mineral Processing Section in 2000.Feeding material of the KRPP having 5 tons per hour capacity is obtained from stockpiles amounting 1.2 million tons. After attrition scrubbing, the feed is sent to a screen with aperture of 1.0 mm. The screen overflow, assaying 5-6 % Cr2O3 is removed as tailings. Screen underflow is classified to –1.0+0.1 mm and minus 0.1 mm size fractions by using cyclone and sieve bend. –1.0+0.1 mm size fraction assaying 6-7 % Cr2O3, is sent to existing gravity separation plant. Minus 0.1 mm size fraction is firstly fed to WHIMS for pre-concentration and non-magnetic product assaying 10-11 % Cr2O3 consisting of serpentine, talc and olivine minerals are separated as tailings. Also magnetic product (25-30 % Cr2O3) obtained from WHIMS is fed to the two stages conditioners after dewatered to 30 % solid ratio."

"Frothers offered by different manufacturers are marketed with some information on their chemical and physical properties (e.g. density, viscosity, color, water-solubility, safety/toxicity, etc.). But frothers are used in flotation to generate fine bubbles and to stabilize the forth, and this information is only provided in a very qualitative description of the visual appearance of bubbles and froths. The terms “powerful” and “selective”, which have been commonly used to characterize frothers, have intuitive rather than scientific meaning.This paper introduces the DFI (Dynamic Foamability Index) plotted vs. CCC (Critical Coalescence Concentration) diagrams to classify flotation frothers (Fig. 1). The frothers characterized by low CCC and high DFI values have properties of strong flotation frothers, while those with high CCC and low DFI values are more selective. The proposed frother classification system, based on simple CCC and DFI measurements, provides, for the first time, a solid ground-work for characterization of the flotation frothers."

Bubble collisions with ore grains and a selective formation of the bubble-grain aggregates are necessary steps for flotation separation of useful and gangue components of an ore. For the attachment of valuable mineral grain to the colliding bubble a liquid film, separating the bubble and the grain needs to rupture during short time of their collision. High hydrophobicity of the grain surface is favorable because stability of the separating (wetting) film is much lower at such surfaces, that is, the film ruptures faster and at greater thickness. Simultaneously, it needs to be kept in mind and taken into consideration that high affinity to air is a typical feature of hydrophobic surfaces. Thus, when the hydrophobic surface is immersed into aqueous phase the air can stay attached to such surfaces and affect kinetics of the bubble attachment. The paper presents results and analysis of dynamic phenomena occurring upon the collision of the rising bubble followed by its attachment to hydrophobic (Teflon) plates of different roughness. The influence of the Teflon surface roughness, solution concentration, bubble size and impact velocity on bouncing of the colliding bubble, time of the three phase contact (TPC) formation and drainage time of the liquid film, formed between the solid and bubble surfaces, is described. High hydrophobicity, as showed earlier (Malysa et al, 2005), does not assure that each collision leads to the TPC formation and attachment of the colliding bubble. Roughness is the parameter of crucial importance for kinetics of the bubble attachment to hydrophobic surfaces (Krasowska and Malysa, 2007; Krasowska et al, 2009; Kosior et al, 2011). Enlarged roughness of the Teflon plate, from ca. 1 to 80µm, results in shortening the time of the TPC formation (bubble attachment) by over an order of magnitude - from 105 to a few milliseconds only. Higher surface roughness means that larger amount of air can be entrapped in bigger scratches and cavities of the Teflon plate during its immersion into aqueous phase. Results documenting importance of the air presence are showed and mechanism of the air facilitated TPC formation and bubble attachment to hydrophobic surfaces is described. A high-grade fluorite ore is converted into hydrogen fluoride to produce many kinds of materials containing fluorine. Recently, it is becoming necessary to use low-grade fluorite ore due to the depletion of high grade ore. The low-grade fluorites usually have impurities such as SiO2, P, CaCO3 and arsenic. The most impurities such as SiO2, CaCO3 and P can be removed by using flotation method. However, the removal of arsenic is difficult, and the arsenic contamination decreases the hydrogen fluoride production percentage. The novel technologies for processing low-grade fluorite ore are urgently needed, in order to lower the arsenic concentration to less than 100 mg/kg. In this study, the removal of arsenic from low-grade fluorite ore has been investigated by means of an autogenous grinding using tower mill in sulfuric acid aqueous solution and 0.3 mm zirconia balls in water. The nano grinding in water can prevent the dissolution of 0.3 mm size zirconia balls as grinding media by sulfuric acid solution. Experimental results showed that the arsenic concentration was reduced from 260 mg/kg to 90 mg/kg and CaF2 recovery reached 90% by this process.

In metallurgical processes, more and more usage of hydrocarbons is encouragedto bring down the carbon emissions. In this regard, numerous investigations onreduction of oxides by C-O-H-N gas mixture have been reported. Attempts to simulatethese reduction processes using shrinking core model, one of the commonmodels used for such studies, have under predicted the reduction rates. This maybe owing to the fact that the homogeneous reaction in the gas phase is not being considered. If the reaction temperatures are above 1000K, generally so for manyreduction processes, the homogeneous gas reaction rates are expected to be sohigh that one can assume local equilibrium in the gas phase. In the present study,reduction of wustite in a C-O-H-N gas mixture has been modeled using shrinkingcore model considering the water gas shift equilibrium in the gas while it diffusesthrough the product layer.

Micro-bubble flotation is considered to be an ideal method for the separation of fine or ultra-fine particles, which are difficult to be separated with conventional flotation and other solid separation technologies. Micro-bubble flotation can increase the probability of bubble-particle collision more than conventional milli-bubble flotation. However, there are also some problems. For example, it is known that the rising velocity of micro-bubble is quite low; therefore, the flotation rate reduces. And also, the bubble-particle adhesion probability becomes lower than that of milli-bubble flotation, which is proved in our prior research. In this paper, we applied ultrasonic irradiation to the micro-bubble flotation system in order to solve the above problems and focused on the bubble-bubble and bubble-particle interactions. For clarifying the behavior of bubble-bubble interaction, bubbles behavior was recorded by high-speed camera under irradiation of various ultrasonic frequencies. As a result, in the case of bubble-bubble interaction, it is proved that bubbles are highly coalesced by ultrasonic irradiation especially in the lower frequency and it can enhance more precise separation. In the case of bubble-particle behavior, it is found that the floatability become higher with the ultrasonic irradiation of higher frequency, and it is indicated that ultrasonic irradiation might improve the bubble-particle adhesion probability. Additionally, it is also found that the apparent CMC of the micro-bubble flotation under the ultrasonic field become much lower with higher frequency than with lower frequency, and it is suggested that the dramatic improvement of hydrophobization is achieved.

The use of continuous discharge centrifugal concentrators introduced in the early 1990’s for recovery of gold associated with sulphides has introduced a novel application niche for gravity concentration which could not be realized with the low mass yield batch and semi-continuous concentrators. A typical application is scavenging gold associated with sulphides from flotation tails which has potential to increase productivity by reducing gold loss to tailings and lower grinding cost by using a coarser grind. However, the full potential of this technology has not been fully exploited partly due to the lack of reliable small sample procedures to demonstrate applicability. This paper introduces a bench-scale procedure developed to characterize the Knelson Continuous Variable Discharge concentrator (CVD) for scavenging gold from flotation tails. The procedure code named gravity release analysis was derived from standard flotation release analysis. It is a modification of the gravity recoverable gold and gravity amenability test in order to best simulate continuous centrifugal concentration. Based on this iterative procedure, a gravity release index similar to the flotation rate constant, for measuring individual mineral gravity susceptibility for an ore is introduced which can be a useful quantitative measure to both predict application of centrifugal concentration and for plant design. The gravity release analysis procedure was tested on a polymetallic flotation plant tailing at Myra Falls, BC, Canada and results show that it can predict CVD performance. The gravity release index for gold was observed to decrease with each successive cleaner stage showing that the initial stages recover liberated gold whilst successive runs recover gold associated with sulphides and or gangue. The difference in magnitude of the gravity release index for different mineral species shows the species separable by centrifugal concentration.

Gangue minerals can often have severe adverse effects on selective value mineral separation. Such effects can be mediated through a variety of pathways or mechanisms. One popular mechanism is that of ?slime coating? or heterocoagulation, wherein the gangue mineral fines are believed to coat the value mineral surfaces and thereby reduce selectivity and floatability. Another pathway that has received relatively little attention is that mediated through the effect of gangue minerals on pulp rheology, and consequently selective separation. Our recent work in developing a scientific understanding of these effects has highlighted the prevalence and importance of this pathway. In this study, the impact of shape and morphology of serpentine gangue minerals on suspension rheology and selective Ni flotation from ultramafic ores was investigated. We found strong evidence for micro- and macro-network formation in the presence of acicular (needle-shaped) or fibrous minerals, which impacted pulp rheological properties. Results also supported the hypothesis that morphology has a greater role to play than mere shape. The size of the network ranged from 5 microns to 2 cm depending upon the amount and aspect ratio of fibrous minerals. These networks impede many flotation sub-processes, such as gas dispersion and bubble-particle interactions. Additionally, the small pore size of the networks prevents bubble penetration leading to a large transport of the gangue minerals to the concentrate via lifting of the entire network by bubble flux, which resulted in a significant grade dilution. Based on the scientific insights generated in this study various techniques have been developed to improve selective value mineral separation.
