Fire suppression systems are now recognised by both NFPA 502 and PIARC as legitimate tools for both life protection and asset protection. The effectiveness of these tools for life protection demands extremely rapid and accurate incident detection coupled with rapid response. This rapid response must be integrated with other emergency systems such as emergency ventilation. The March 2007 fatal Burnley Tunnel incident in Australia graphically illustrates the potential of effectively integrated fixed suppression systems to protect people from harm and save infrastructure from damage. Despite the raft of technology available in that instance to the operator it was the human operatorÆs ability to effectively control the emergency equipment and not the equipment itself which so positively influenced the threat to life and property.

Several drilling programs at Maldon have produced 7790 core samples, which were assayed for gold, with 2825 of the samples assayed for nine other metallic elements. There is a lack of correlation between gold and all other elements. The situation, however, changes dramatically when sorted according to the abundance of arsenic. In the populations where As >200 ppm, there are strong, positive correlations between gold and several elements. There is also a strong positive correlation of Au with the weighted sums and products of all elements with the elemental averages as a weighting factor, and Bi*Sb and Bi*As elemental products. In these populations, there is also a strong positive correlation between the logarithms of Au and logarithms of each element, as well as the elemental sums and products described above. The correlation coefficients increase with higher As cut-off values.All elemental distributions but especially gold show a high-nugget effect and display high skewness and dispersion, low kurtosis, and common outliers. The distributions of their logarithms are several magnitudes less scattered and without outliers. Thus, the logarithmical distribution correlations are best for practical use.Correlation coefficients were T-tested and are statistically significant. The elemental correlations, particularly those of logarithmic values of weighted sums and Bi, could be used as a gold path finding tool at Maldon. After a preliminary assay for gold and arsenic, only samples with As > 200 ppm should be assayed for other elements. Higher values of gold-correlated elements or elemental ratios, in samples with low gold grades, may increase confidence that gold is under reporting due to its highly nuggetty nature.CITATION:Krokowski de Vickerod, J and Ebsworth, G B, 2012. Mineral resources all over the world are often heterogeneous and have variable ore properties and ore grade. As a result the ore processed in concentrating plants varies over the life of mines. Consequently the circuits often suffer from bottlenecks typically at the stages of crushing, semi-autogeneous (SAG) and ball milling. Bottlenecks may be remedied with equipment retrofits, however, design engineers should consider a phased approach to the circuit design that delays initial capital expenditure over the life-of-mine. This paper deals with the debottlenecking of existing mineral processing plants by means of high pressure grinding roll (HPGR) applications. It also deals with the use of innovative flow sheet designs using HPGRs for the design of Greenfield plants by engineering or mining companies. In the case of Greenfield plant design an analysis with respect to energy efficiency and operating cost (OPEX) is presented. The analysis compares the performance of SAG based circuits against HPGR circuits that may be influenced by variable ore properties. Globally about 600 HPGRs are installed in various applications in the cement and minerals industries. In excess of 100 of these HPGRs are used since the mid 1980s for crushing and grinding of various ore types including æhard rockÆ applications. HPGR technology is mature enough to be considered as an ideal debottlenecking device. HPGRÆs are versatile, they have a low installation footprint and they are flexible in its machine settings (pressure, roll speed), which can be adjusted to react to ore variations whilst maintaining a high throughput. Examples for the benefits of using HPGR in terms of energy efficiency and operating costs are presented by this paper. æEco-efficientÆ flow sheets and sustainable development initiatives are linked to energy savings as an æenergy costÆ and benefit to the environment. Energy savingsÆ can also be analysed in terms of the ædollar costÆ (OPEX) savings. This paper demonstrates that HPGR is more energy efficient and may reduce the overall grinding energy requirements in the order of 16 per cent depending on the target grind size and ore properties. The HPGR is more cost efficient and may reduce overall grinding costs by as much as 19.3 per cent depending on the cost of energy, grinding media and the rate of grinding media wear in the comminution circuit.

IN all wet concentration processes it is of primary importance to determine to what degree the crushing must be carried in order to obtain the maximum profit per ton of ore milled.To effect a clean separation, either by gravity or flotation treatment, between either one valuable sulphide from another, or a sUlphide from the gangue, the ore must have been subjected to grinding to such an extent that the particles to be separated are completely liberated from each other.Insufficient crushing will result in either an incomplete separation of the sulphides from each other, and thus a loss of the one sulphide in the other, or else a loss of the valuable sulphide in the gangue.This being so, the question arises whether the added cost of extra crushing would be economically warranted by the increased recovery consequent on such a step.

Mount Isa Mines Limited first installed electronic data processing equipment in 1959. The decision to replace this equipment with a computer was motivated by the need for greater processing power and the availability of new and less expensive computers. Consideration of hardware software and delivery features of available equipment, resulted in the selectIon of an ICT 1900 series computer which was installed in March 1966. Special air-conditioning and power stabilization equipment was also required.Systems design and programming was carried out by personnel recruited from within the Company and trained by the computer manufacturer. Early work was hindered by the problems of remote location.Initial applications were basically accounting functions whIch were taken over from the EDP installation. Subsequently computer applIcatIOns of a more complex technical nature have been undertaken. Future work will include both "scientific" and data processing applications.

The latest outcome of science is that aII bodies are composed of vibrating atoms or molecules. In almost all mineral bodies when changing from the gaseous or liquid condition to the solid, if the vibrating molecules are allowed free play, they arrange themselves in a symmetrical manner, and at a definite angle to each other: This angle varies with each system of crystallization. In a great many bodies this process may be brought about artificially, and the growth of the crystal watched. The most common method is to dissolve some substance in water or some other liquid, on slowly evaporating the liquid, the substance dissolved will solidify and the molecules will arrange themselves in their particular crystalline form.The element carbon crystallizes in two forms; as graphite in the form of a short six-sided prism', and in the diamond generally as the octohedron in the cubical system of crystallization. Orystalline bodies, as a rule, have plain faces but what is remarkable in the diamond is that in a great many cases the faces are rounded. Its great beauty as a gem when cut, and the high artificial value placed upon it by fashion, as well as its value as a cutting and boring instrument-it being the hardest body in nature-has caused many attempts to be made to form it artificially. These attempts have met with fair success as a scientific experiment, but as a commercial speculation they have been a complete failure. The most noted of these experIments was carried out by Mr. Hannay, of Glasgow.Paraffin spirit with lithium was submitted td prolonged heating in strong wrought-iron tubes securely welded. In most of the experiments the tubes exploded; but in a few cases the experiments were successful, and on cutting open the tubes small crystals of diamonds were found embedded in a black mass.Despretz produced minute diamonds under the influence of a powerful electric current from coal.

Up until 1990 CoalCorp North Island's accident record was six times that considered acceptable in those NSW operations with good accident prevention programmes. This was an obvious avoidable burden on the company in both human and cost terms.   Late in 1989 an accident prevention programme was implemented with the objective of achieving a 50 per cent reduction in the lost time accident frequency rate within 12 months. The key to achieving this objective was recognised as being an attitude change in the total workforce from General Manager downward. Management commitment and action were seen to be critical to the success of the programme.   Through very basic and simple training programmes in accident investigation, analysis and reporting, communication, on-the-job coaching and in focusing on improving supervision skills, the original objective was achieved.   During 1991 the application of methods improvement and hazard recognition techniques are seen as the logical step to achieving a further 50 per cent reduction in the accident frequency rate.

Grinding and Flowing Investigation on Dry Stirred Ball Milling in Order to Determine the Influence of Grinding Aids Huge difficulties of the great ultra fine ground material production in dry stirred ball mill are the cohesion and agglomeration of the particles. During grinding the material stick on the grinding wall and the grinding media furthermore the grinds start cohere, making aggregation and agglomeration to appear. Due to these effects the particle size will not decrease after a certain value during grinding and the energy demand increases significantly. According to experience on fine grinding in ball mill, it is well known that these effects can be reduced with the use of grinding aids. The influence of grinding aids has three different effects: due to the adsorption strength reduction (Rebinder effect) the grinding resistance of the material decreases; the surface energy diminishes and the agglomeration liability decreases; and the flow properties of material improve. The aim of this study is to investigate the flow properties of fine grinds and the effect of grinding aids on flow properties in case of dry stirred ball milling. In addition, the influence of grinding aids was investigated based on the particle size distribution and specific surface area of grinds and the specific energy demand of grinding. The examinations were carried out with three different model materials (limestone, clinker, quartz) using the usually applied grinding aid. The flow properties were measured by the Jenike shear cell; the particle size distribution and specific surface area were measured by laser particle size analyser (Fritsch Analysette 22), grinding energy demand was measured with microcomputer controlled digital energy meter. It can be said that under certain measuring circumstances the influence of grinding aid on flow properties can be demonstrated by Jenike shear cell, so the grinding result is in correlation with the flow properties of grind.

Disasters are often tragic outcomes of high-risk technologies such as mines. In Australia, more mines are being developed every day, and the risk of disasters is ever increasing. No matter how effective our conventional safety devices are, there is a form of accident that is inevitable. These relate to accidents that result from æinteracting failuresÆ in a way that could not be foreseen by the designers. In so-called ætightly coupled production systemsÆ (processes that happen very fast, such as on a high producing mine) the risk is even higher and our risk controls mostly introduce some sort of a technological fix. While we are at the one hand attempting to control the risk, we are also introducing another level of complexity. Are we really controlling the risk? This is one of the fundamental questions that will be addressed in this paper: Do we have the ability within the mining industry and other industries to effectively prevent these catastrophes, or are we, on the contrary, faced with an increasing risk as a result of increasing complexities of our technology, management systems and practices. This paper will contend that perceived improvement in risk control is an illusion of activity, and that the likelihood of mining catastrophes may be exponentially increasing. Although the paper focuses on the mining sector many aspects may be applicable across a range of industries. This paper will further contend that we are applying the right solutions to the wrong problems. Our focus is technological and procedural, while our problem is one of production cultures ripe for error and failure.

The Gippsland Basin, southeastern Australia, has an Upper Cainozoic history of episodic change of hydrology and the related environment, reflected in the geomorphology and surficial deposits of the onshore basin and the hydrodynamically controlled accumulations of petroleum of the offshore basin. Succeeding this episodic pattern, man through a number of activities, has had a sudden and major impact on the hydrology and the related environment. Activities include those directly affecting the groundwater system, such as extraction of fossil fuels with the consequent threat of land subsidence; irrigation and clearing of vegetation and the consequent effect of salinisation; change of land use and installation of septic tanks with resulting nitrate pollution; damming of streams and the consequent reduction in the frequency of floods with degradation of the biological Environment; de-snagging streams and construction of cutoffs with increased stream erosion, modifying wetlands including drainage, with the consequent degradation of their ecosystems; and increase in phosphate and nitrate inputs to the coastal lakes with the risk of their eutrophication.

The discovery and delineation of significant mineralisation in the Eliwana region continues Fortescue Metals Group’s strong exploration success. In the decade after the first hole was drilled into Christmas Creek in mid-2004 a total of over 11 Bt of hematite-goethite mineralisation have been delineated supporting the raising of $13 B, construction of five mines, 620 km of rail and a five-berth port. As of June 2014, Fortescue was shipping at the rate of 155 Mt/a. The area including the Eliwana and Flying Fish deposits is one of a number of future growth opportunities that Fortescue is currently evaluating.The Eliwana and Flying Fish deposits occur on the south dipping limb of the Brockman Syncline/Jeerinah Anticline. The Eliwana group of deposits are hosted by the Brockman Iron Formation with the Flying Fish/Broadway group hosted by the Marra Mamba Iron Formation.Structurally the area is dominated by moderate southerly dips of the regional dome and keel style folding. The regional limb is locally cross-cut at a small angle by asymmetric north facing Ophthalmian folds trending 110°. These fold sets, in part, preferentially host subsequent supergene mineralisation. Faulting is only locally apparent.Early phases of exploration commenced in 2006, with mapping of Flying Fish and reconnaissance drilling in 2007. However, due to the concurrent discovery (Clarke et al, 2009) and subsequent fast tracked development of Solomon channel iron deposit and Firetail bedded iron deposit (Simpson et al, 2011) priority was placed on developing Solomon due to its relative proximity to existing Fortescue infrastructure. Staged follow-up drilling of both Marra Mamba and Brockman targets at Eliwana was progressively undertaken from 2008 onward.As of 20 May 2014 a total of 1494 reverse circulation (RC) holes for 54 248 m and 13 diamond holes had been completed, resulting in the delineation of a Mineral Resource of 740 Mt. Previous methods for measuring the flow of solids in Jnrdraulic conveying have not considered the important effects of slip velocity and particle concentration. In this paper an extension of the method proposed byShirato et al. (J. Chem. Engng. 'Japan, 1: 164-167) for determining mass flow in a vertical conduit is outlined.The present method consists of measuring' the volumetric flow of the slurry (by a magnetic flow meter for instance) and the density of the slurry in two pipe sections of different diameters. Effects of variation of slip withparticle concentration, not previously considered, are allowed.Problems involved in estimating the density of a slurry from differential pressure measurement are discussed.The major problem is the uncertainties in estimating frictional losses due to the wall in two-phase flows. The greater reliability of a more "direct" technique, such as by 'Y-ray absorption, for measuring solid concentration is emphasized.

The commonly used Stopes-Heerlen coal petrographic classification and nomenclature has over the years been subject to variable interpretations. This paper discusses the problem with specific reference to the inertinite maceral group. The effect of various interpretations of the Stopes-Heerlen system on maceral analysis is discussed and illustrated by means of comparative analyses conducted by a number of laboratories in Australia.An attempt is made to define the reflectance thresholds used by the authors to subdivide the inertinite group; the genetic and technological significance of these thresholds are compared.The difficulties of distinguishing structured and nonstructured macerals of the inertinite group are discussed in terms of possible improvements to the present StopesHeerlen system by extending the classification to include transitional maceral types.

This paper uses the results of research trials by Landcare Research and Forest Research Institute and assessments of reclamation plantings at mines and other drastically disturbed sites to describe methods of enhancing restoration of native forests. The characteristics of mine and forest environments are compared to highlight the difficulties facing restoration and techniques which result in successful restoration are described. Selection of the most appropriate technique is illustrated by describing restoration of lowland beech-podocarp forest at a West Coast coal mine. The key to successful reclamation is to understand the factors controlling and limiting plant establishment and growth, then to design rooting media, surfaces and management regimes to create a favourable environment. This paper concludes with a summary of the planning and technical factors which are critical for successful restoration of native forest.

This paper introduces a new coal-based rotary kiln process of DRI production - the CRIMM process, which is developed by Changsha Research Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in the past years. Its main features are the use of composite pellets (in rotary kiln). The process consists of preparation of pellets from iron concentrate and coating of coal on their surfaces. The new process is able to overcome a series of defects of the conventional coal-based rotary kiln processes. A continuous test was conducted using an experiment rotary kiln (-0.6;, x 3 m). TFe of the magnetic iron concentrate used in the test is 67.25 per cent. TFe of the product DRI is 88.54 per cent, MFe is 84.11 per cent, S and P are less than 0.02 per cent. The metallisation ratio of pellet is 95 per cent. The pellet power ratio is less than 0.3 per cent. The utilisation coefficient of rotary kiln is 1.3 t/m'-d. The overall recovery of iron concentrates is 99.7 per cent. Two small industrial plants using the CRIMM process are being set up in China. Their coal consumption can be decreased to 520 kg standard coal per ton DRI respectively.

Mining law has developed in Great Britain (GB) over centuries, mainly in response to lessons learned after disasters and other major incidents. This has led to a culture of preventing repeat accidents, rather than predicting and controlling unsafe acts or conditions.This paper explains how, initially in response to a government drive to reduce the burden on industry, the opportunity was taken to review and reform all 48 sets of GB mining-specific law into a single document. This technical note describes a problem with WANG82, a ventilation network analysis programme. The problem was highlighted by Renison Ltd when using the programme on large, complex networks. Under certain circumstances the programme produced incorrect results or failed to converge to a solution.

The case study has identified and characterised additional subsidence arising from longwall mining above or under existing longwall goaf. It suggests that the magnitude, mechanisms and prediction methods for such additional subsidence are different between the two mining configurations. This paper presents a proposed method to predict maximum vertical subsidence due to longwall mining under existing longwall goaf. It suggests that, unless different results from further new cases become available, the findings presented in this article, including the aforementioned prediction method, be applicable to the majority of sites in New South Wales, where multi-seam longwall mining is to take place. This article also presents an important concept of 'overburden modification' due to multi-seam mining. A causal relationship between the above-mentioned additional subsidence and 'overburden modification' has been identified as a result of the case studies. Further investigations into the physical processes that cause such overburden modification will be fundamental to the understanding and management of multi-seam subsidence.

A bulk mineral analyser (BMA) suitable for the determination of Cu or Ni in bulk ore samples has been developed at the Lucas Heights Research Laboratories. This analyser, which uses the nuclear resonance scattering technique, is highly specific to the wanted element. The technique has previously been extensively field tested for copper at Mount Isa, Queensland.The present paper discusses the field trial in 1982 of a commercial prototype BMA for nickel. The trial was undertaken at the lateritic nickel mine at Greenvale, Queensland. The BMA and its shielding, together with a laboratory spectrum analyser, were sited in the sample shed adjacent to the workings. Two hundred and thirty-eight ore samples taken directly from the mine blastholes were assayed by the BMA. The average mass of sample was 12 kg, metal contents varied from 0.2 to 3.5 wt/per cent Ni and 4 to 43 wt/per cent Fe and free moisture varied from 11 to 55 wt/per cent. A measurement took 10 min to complete, although this time could have been reduced at the higher nickel grades. The r.m.s. deviation between BMA and chemical assays was 0.09 wt/per cent nickel. Iron and bulk density were also determined by the BMA, r.m.s. deviations being 1.7 wt/per cent and 0.03 g/cmJ respectively. Similar results could be expected from a BMA in routine industrial use at other nickel mines.
