Three main genetic types of hematite can be recognised at Quadrilßtero Ferrffero (QF): Micaceous or schistose hematite derived by metamorphic/metasomatic process during regional metamorphism, increasing eastward, formed under temperatures ranging from 250¦C to 500¦C in CO2-rich aqueous carbonic, high- to medium-salinity fluids. Hematite in shear and mylonite zones, showing a wide variation of fluid and temperature conditions, between metamorphic and hydrothermal conditions. Deformed quartz-specular hematite veins formed during the late phases. Hydrothermal, compact and isotropic hematite developed during a brittle-ductile regime, forming the cement of the boudinage-kink breccia and jacutinga-type of gold mineralisation, under temperatures ranging from 80¦C to 140¦C in aqueous, low- to medium salinity, oxidant fluids, resulting from the interaction of meteoric and metamorphic/metasomatic fluids. Quartz-carbonate-sulfide veins were formed slightly later, through reducing fluids.

High pressure abrasive water jets have been shown capable of cutting a wide range of materials including steel, stone, rock and concrete. Acceptable performance can be achieved using relatively low pressures and expendable abrasives. The cutting head can be made small and abrasive feed systems have been developed that allow reliable pumping of slurries over long distances to supply such cutting heads. These features make abrasive water jets ideally suited to automated control in remote areas.Another major advantage of abrasive entraining water jet cutting heads is that they may be operated safely in potentially explosive environments due to their cold cutting ability. Therefore there are many possible applications for such equipment in mining.This paper gives an introduction to the abrasive water jet process and includes results of trials carried out at BHRA on a range of hard materials. Work is also described which investigated the operational safety of abrasive water jets in explosive environ-ments. In a special environmental chamber, cuts were made on steel and sandstone with atmospheres of methane/air and hydrogen/air, without caypsing ignition.

The Maddingley brown coal seam at Bacchus Marsh, where mined and bored, tends on the whole to a higher content of volatile matter than the Latrobe Valley brown coals, and this masks the presence of lignitic or earthy coal bands in the bore core analyses. Visits to the Lucifer Open Cut, at Bacchus Marsh, during 1948, revealed, however, a banded condition in the coal seam, as shown in Fig. 1. This banding showed in a face that had been exposed for a considerable period of time, permitting partial drying out and oxidation of the surface coal. The bands consist of different coal types, ,comparable with those found in the Yallournand Latrobe brown coal seams(l).The' light coloured bands in Fig. 1 consist of a buff to light-brown earthy coal of low specific gravity, that closely resembles the pollen coal, that occurs, as similar thin bands in the Yallourn and Latrobe seams. The 40 ft. of coal above the uppermost of these light coloured bands dries out on exposure to a black, closely cracked surface, composed of small dice-like fragments of a lustrous vitrain-like substance, and in every respect resembles the lignitic coal bands of the Yallourn and Latrobe seams.The coal between and below the light-coloured bands develops fewer and more widely spaced shrinkage cracks on drying out, and remains brown in colour and earthy in appearance, resembling the earthy coal of the Yallourn and Latrobe seams.Representative samples were cut of these coals, taking care to exclude surface coal, and analyses were made of them by the Metropolitan Gas Company, through the kindness of Dr. R. S. Andrews, Chief Chemist to the Company...

Environmental leaching methods such as the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) test or the ASLP test are used to assess wastes including mining and mineral processing by-products. These tests were initially designed as regulatory tests simulating conditions in a co-disposal municipal landfill waste facility and do not allow leaching performance to be predicted in site specific scenarios. Further, the assumptions underlying these tests tend to define worst-case scenario leaching conditions for by-products from the mineral industry disposed of outside a co-disposal scenario.   Recently some characterisation leaching test methods have been issued as ISO/TS standards (ISO/TS 21268-3:2007 and ISO/TS 21268-4:2007) that aim to define the leaching performance of soil type wastes and to predict the leaching performance of these wastes over long time frames. In this preliminary work these standards are trialled for by-products from the mineral industry and the quality of information that can be obtained from them compared to TCLP/ASLP tests.   Where clear comparisons were possible, the TCLP/ASLP tests were typically found to extract a similar, or often greater, amount of component than (i) tests conducted at the same pH but without the acetate buffer or (ii) for test conditions aimed at simulating long-term leaching in an eluate defined by the waste type. While further work is required, the preliminary results indicated that the tests may provide reliable long-term estimates of leaching performance of wastes in soil types of variable pH and provide a suitable basis for long-term planning for optimal waste handling, treatment or even re-use.

A pilot scale experimental investigation of the condensation of zinc vapour from smelter off-gases was performed in conjunction with a mathematical modelling study of the system. The work investigated the feasibility of using the high heat and mass transfer rates associated with a fluidised bed to condense zinc directly from smelter off-gases containing zinc vapour. Of particular interest was whether zinc would revert to zinc oxide during the process of condensation, and whether a zinc fog would form and be carried out of the condenser. A 0.1 m diameter fluidised bed condenser was mounted on the top of a 200 kVA DC electric arc furnace in which mixtures of vapours and gases were generated at 1150 - 1300¦C. The gas/vapour mixtures investigated included Zn/N2, Zn/N2/CO/CO2 and Zn/N2/H2/H2O. Greater than 90 per cent of the zinc was deposited on the zircon sand bed of the condenser, and there was no sign of zinc oxide formation, suggesting that the rate of heat transfer was faster than the reaction rate for zinc oxide formation. There was also no evidence that fog was being formed in the condenser. Using the methods of Kunii and Levenspeil (1991), a mathematical model was developed to predict the behaviour of the fluidised bed condenser. The model enabled the distribution of gas/vapour temperature and bed temperature to be determined as a function of distance from the condenser inlet. Similarly the partial pressure of zinc vapour in the gas mixture, and hence the mass transfer rate of zinc to the particles, was determined. Experimental data allowed validation of the predicted bed and gas/vapour temperatures.

During October 1947 an Authority to Prospect was granted by the Minister of Mines to lVIount Isa Mines Limited over an area of approximately 75 sq. miles to the north of Mount Isa.Application for the Authority to Prospect had been made after Zinc Corporation Limited had been granted prospecting rights over two areas, one of 1,265 acres immediately to the north of the Mount Isa Mines leases and the other of 1,960 acres adjoining the south end of Mount Isa Mines leases.METHODSAs a means of providing a cheap map of sufficient accuracy on which to plot geological features, both Mount Isa Mines Limited and Zinc Corporation Limited agreed upon aerial photographs and the two companies shared the cost of an aerial photographic survey by Adastra Airways of 130 sq. miles which covered the prospecting areas held by both companies.The photographs were on a scale of 800 ft. to I in. with 60% overlap on the north-south runs and 25% overlap east-west. A set of alternate prints enlarged to 400 ft. to 1 \in. were obtained for field work. The 400 ft. to 1 in. scale unglossed photographs (size 18 in. x 18 in.) were taken On to the field and rock outcrops, and uncorrelated structures were plotted directly on to them in red crayon pencil. The geological observations were then transferred in the office to a tracing on which accuracy of azimuth and scale was controlled by use of a photo mosaic and ground surveys.

Australian mining companies are actively exploring for and developing mineral deposits throughout the world with interests in emerging markets such as Africa, Asia and South America. It is important to understand emerging market risk as this will affect the willingness of mining companies and financial institutions to invest in a country, especially with reference to their key asset, the mining licence or operating/concession agreement. Mining companies looking to develop new projects in emerging markets have different risk profiles than projects in countries such as Australia and Canada. Examples of key risks faced in emerging markets include: political û expropriation, nationalisation, contract frustration, currency inconvertibility, war, terrorism, strikes, riots and civil commotion; and legal û mining legislation, arbitration and dispute resolution, trade agreements. There is a problem in the difference in risk perceptions between mining companies, financial institutions and insurers. This can cause different stakeholders to carry out different evaluations of the risks faced by a project, resulting in confusion about the risk margin attached to any project. In a time where resource nationalisation and energy security are prompting governments to become more involved in the mining sector we run through some recent examples of mining companies that have had problems due to the key risks highlighted earlier. Importance of carrying out the right due diligence to replace perceptions with reality: early identification of risks û detailed due diligence on emerging market risks that may arise will help with their identification and mitigation, make use of companies that can help identify risks and suggest solutions, control the cost of financing û risk margin applied to a project finance loan will be influenced by the risks faced, and risk management and using political risk insurance. There are plenty of opportunities in emerging markets but it is important to recognise the associated risks. Detailed due diligence at an early stage will provide long-term benefits.

The major operational objectives of a mine water resource management system (WRMS) are to supply the water needs of the mine and mill, to minimise disturbance to mining due to rainfall flooding or seepage and to dispose of excess water. Historically, company management have placed a significantly lower emphasis on managing the WRMS as compared to managing production. Changing Government legislation concerned with the disposal of water from mine sites is, in many cases making mining companies look more closely at how they manage their water. For example, within the next few years it is likely that prior to mining approval by the Government, mining operations will have to submit water management plans/budgets and contingency strategies in addition to operational plans. While the formulation of a comprehensive water management plan/budget is an additional cost to the company at the mine establishment stage, such plans can be beneficial to the operation in the longer term.The two keys for the efficient design, operation and development of a WRMS are the establishment of written goals which have managerial priority and secondly, access to appropriate good quality data. Managerial priority towards the WRMS will increase as a consequence of the education of mine operators in the benefits to the operation of good WRMS management or less desirably as a requirement to meet Government legislation. The collection of appropriate WRMS data is a more complex issue and to obtain information efficiently and cost effectively relies on the clear definition of the data application.

The iron ore deposits in India are rich in iron content but usually contains high alumina and silica. The current industrial practice results three products namely lump, fines and slimes. The lump and fines with or without beneficiation are directly fed to the blast furnace and sintering plant respectively while the super fines or slimes are presently discarded as tailings. Around eight million tonnes of iron ore slimes estimated as being 15 - 20 per cent by weight of run of mine ore containing ~48 - 62 per cent Fe, is discarded every year causing huge loss to the Indian iron ore industry. In addition, these slimes stored in massive tailing ponds pose enormous environmental and ecological problems. Extensive investigations have been carried out on three iron ore slimes generated at Barsua, Bolani and Meghahatuburu iron ore mines of India. The studies include physical, chemical, mineralogical characterisation and beneficiation studies adopting conventional hydroclyclone and wet high intensity magnetic separator. The characterisation studies have indicated that most of the gangue minerals are accumulated in finer fractions. The studies on hydrocyclone and magnetic separation had indicated that an iron concentrate of 61 - 65 per cent Fe could be obtained by recovering 59 - 78 per cent of the iron values present in the slimes. Depending on the nature of the slimes the alumina and silica levels have been brought down to 2.5 and 1.0 per cent respectively. The effects of different operating and design variables along with detailed characterisation studies have been highlighted.

Australis Mining N.L. operates a continuous mode carbon-in-pulp (CIP) gold plant, processing sand and slime tailings from previous gold mining operations in the Norseman area. Plant design is that of conventional countercurrent contact between pregnant pulp and activated carbon. Gold desorption is achieved by the Zadra process using near boiling tempera- tures and atmospheric pressure. Process water is drawn from nearby Lake Cowan (saline). The plant operates at, or above, design specification of 400 dry tonnes per day. This paper describes the plant design and operating processes utilised in optimising throughput and gold recovery. TNTDnPTTnmTnM Favourable world gold prices and substantial reserves of sand and slime tailings prompted Australis Mining N.L. to construct a gold extraction plant during 1981. The projected plant throughput was set so as to complete treatment of available tailings over a three year period. Metal- lurgical tests indicated that, with a regrind facility satisfactory gold recovery could be achieved using a countercurrent CIP process. Reflecting the entry of Australis Mining N.L. into its first large scale treatment operation, the plant design emphasised simplicity but effectiveness of Operation.

Although there are sound principles used in the world recognised methods of gas emission prediction, results based on these methods applied to several Australian longwall extractions have yielded unacceptably high discrepancies. With the development of mining in new seams and at higher rates of extraction, the need has grown for a methodical approach to predicting gas emission levels specifically for local Australian mining conditions. Such an approach is developed from results of recorded emission readings during longwall mining at Appin and Pacific Collieries over the past 6 years.

The Islamic Republic of Mauritania is a large country of over 1 000 000 square kilometres situated on the Atlantic coast of north-west Africa. It is bounded to the north by Western Sahara and Algeria, to the east by Mali, and to the south by Mali and Senegal. With the exception of a narrow strip in the south along the Senegal River valley, the country lies entirely within the Sahara. The north of the country is largely devoid of vegetation, and it is estimated that 90 per cent of the population of 2.1 million people live in the southern quarter of the country. From about the turn of the century, Mauritania was ruled by the French from Dakar in Senegal and, until 1960 when it obtained independence from the French, Mauritania did not have a capital. Today, the capital is Nouakchott, home to an estimated 600 000 Moors of mixed Arab, Berber and African descent. After independence in 1960, disputes over Spanish Sahara to the north led to a military coup in 1978 and it was not until 1991 that a democratic constitution was adopted. The new constitution declares Mauritania to be an `Islamic, African, and Arab Republic.' It provides for an executive president, elected for a six-year term, and for a bicameral legislature, consisting of a national assembly and a senate. The first presidential and legislative elections were held in 1992 under United Nations' supervision. Mauritania's economy is predominantly pastoral, and the country depends heavily on foreign aid. Its principal export industries are iron ore mining (about ten million tonnes per annum from mines near Fderik in the north) and fishing. Mines d'Or d'Akjoujt SA (MORAK), a company in which General Gold Resources NL (GGR) has 42.5 per cent equity, produces over 50 000 ounces of gold per annum, which represents the third largest export industry in the country.

A process was developed based on the thermal hydrolysis and precipitation of iron from solutions resulting from the leaching of zinc plant residue. A study was made of the hydrolysis of iron, at temperatures in the range 140-220°C, in both pure solutions of ferrie sulphate and in leach solutions derived from plant spent electrolyte.At 200°C hydrolysis of pure ferric sulphate solutions results in the precipitation of ferric oxide, Fe2O3, at low acid. concentrations, and a basic salt, Fe2O3.2S03.H20, at hIgher acid concentrations. At 180°C ferric oxide is precipitated at low acid concentrations, but at higher acidities. carphosiderite, 3Fe203.4SO.3.9H20, is the stable phase. Frequently a mIxture of ferric oxide and carphosldente IS produced at 180°C, the ratio of phases being dependent on the non-equilibrium experimental conditions.With solutions derived from plant spent electrolyte hydrolysIS at elevated temperatures results in the precipitation of jarosite compounds of the type NaFe3(S04)2(OH)6 The precipitation of natrojarosite jarosite, and ammonio-jarosite was studied in detail. Temperature, free acidity, and the concentration of sodium potassium, and ammonium ions are critical factors which affect the extent of precipitation.A process based on ammonio-jarosite precipitation was tested in a pilot plant.An alternative method of iron removal based on the addition of zinc oxide calcine, to neutralize excess acidity, and the precipitation of ferric oxide was also tested in the pilot plant. An extended Kalman Filter is used to build an on-line estimator of total ore, fine ore and water hold-ups in a SAG mill. In addition, an equivalent grinding rate from coarse to fine ore, as well as the discharge rates of solids (fines) and water are also estimated as part of the adaptation procedure of the model used for the Kalman Filter. The measurements used in the Kalman Filter estimator are the total mill weight provided by load cells, and inferred discharge flows of fines and water from flow and density measurements performed downstream. The net ore and water feed to the SAG mill are used as inputs to the estimator, and also the proportion of fine ore in the feed. As an example of how to introduce robustness in the estimation in the face of sensor bias errors, an estimation of the load cell bias error is introduced in the estimator, thus providing self calibration. The estimator presented in this paper has been tested by simulation using a detailed SAG mill mechanistic dynamic model comprising 27 size fractions well fitted to a pilot mill. The maximum error in the estimation of the operational variables - total and fine ore as well as the mill contents under different operating conditions - is about ten per cent.

King Island is situated at the western approach of Bass Strait and approximately mid way between Victoria and Tasmania. The scheelite orebodies lie within the south east of the island. Ore bearing horizons from 10 m to 40 m thick occur in south and east dipping stratiform deposits. The orebodies occur in skarn formed by contact metasomatic replacement of carbonate rocks by granite intrusives. The scheelite is deposited as fine disseminated grains in and along the margins of andradite garnets in the skarn. King Island Scheelite operates two under- ground mines from which 350 000 tonnes per year are obtained. The Dolphin mine produces almost two-thirds of the total. See Figure 1. The Dolphin orebody lies beneath the sea and an area of reclamation. The orebody is inter- sected by zones of major dislocation. A chequerboard post pillar cut and fill stoping system has been chosen to provide the necessary support to the hanging wall. Because the stability of the pillars is critical to the economic welfare of the mine, considerable attention is given to the reduction of overbreak.

Mine planning is difficult. Even for small operations, it involves reasoning with complex variables and the practical difficulties of mining. It is also about predicting and planning the future in an unpredictable physical and economic environment. Yet we rely on a handful of individuals and their spreadsheets to tell us how to do it û planning the business and activities of mining to hopefully produce results that will please stakeholders. Does it work? Not as well as it could. Planning affects everyone in the organisation. Company executives are demanding more reliability and stability in cost and revenue forecasts from their operations. Management want to explore ways of being more cost effective. Miners and contractors want more useful plans and realistic targets. And the planners have to describe the method that will translate business objectives into implementable plans. Even with the use of computer technology a lot of effort is expended to produce plans that are largely qualified by the level of knowledge and experience of individuals. Better use of information and the application of Intelligent Technologies can improve the quality and reliability of mine plans and schedules. By capturing the knowledge within the organisation and speeding up the planning process, Intelligent Technologies allow more options to be considered more rigorously. But it is not just about technology. It is about how technology is implemented and embodied in the way the business is managed for performance. When this happens, the real benefits of better planning start to flow.

The advancements achieved in rapid tunnelling in the 60's and 70's have been notable. It is unfortunate that shaft sinking has not enjoyed equivalent advances and there are many good reasons why this is so. Technical and commercial considerations have held back development and continue to do so despite the increasing urgency in the search for minerals and energy. By the careful selection of an appropri- ate project and the application of specialist engineering the Bdard took advantage of a unique opportunity to apply a mechanised shaft borer in field conditions.

The magnesite deposits near Young, N.S.W., occur in decomposed serpentine rock below a soil. and alluvial cover. They show considerable variation in both quality and depth which greatly hampers mining operations. Seismic refraction techniques afford methods of conducting detailed and reconnaissance surveys which yield a depth and velocity analysis of the serpentine/magnesite refractor. The measured seismic velocities may be used as an index of the presence and quality of the deposits. The Seismic Timer which was used in the test surveys is a simplified seismograph which makes use of seismic reciprocity by replacing the conventional seismic shotpoints with geophone stations and the conventional geophone stations with impact points of a sledge hammer. Thi,s enables the use of detailed seismic refraction techniques which yield the depth and velocity analysis of the refractor.INTRODUCTIONThe magnesite deposits near Young, N.S.W., were produced by a process of leaching and enrichment of magnesium in serpentine rock. The magnesite occurs in nodular form emplaced in decomposed rock at shallow depths below soil and alluvium. The depth ranges from close to the surface down to some tens of feet. The deposits are patchy and show considerable variation in both quality and depth, giving riseto considerable difficulties in mining operations.Due to the thorough leaching of the surface material, geochemical tests carried out so far have not proved satisfactory for locating the pockets of magnesite enrichment.It was decided to test the application of detailed shallow seismic refraction methods to the investigation of both the depth and quality of the deposits. Australian wheat belt agriculture is causing a decline of its natural resource base. The major problem, salinity, arises from a small reduction in water consumption by agricultural crops compared to what prevailed under the prior native vegetation. This causes groundwater accumulation which, in the low relief landscapes of the wheat belt, is leading to extensive surface saturation in low landscape positions and dramatic, destructive change in the hydrological behaviour and habitat of streams and rivers. The ability of agriculture to invest in salinity control is severely limited by its long-term decline in its terms of trade. Extensive planting of perennial vegetation has the potential to increase water use and arrest the salinisation process. If these perennials were also commercially attractive, the cost of salinity treatment could be minimised. Given the difficult commercial position of food commodities, it is logical to develop ænon-foodÆ perennial crops, in particular woody crops suitable for industrial products. This paper looks at the example of Sweden, where there has been a generation of investment in developing forest harvest residue recovery, and short cycle woody crops for bioenergy, but with only limited success. In contrast, secondary residues (processing wastes) from forestry industry are readily saleable for low value uses like bioenergy. This suggests that the model woody crop must have a higher value fraction to facilitate delivery and commercial use of its lower value fractions. This model is being emulated in the development of native mallee eucalypts as short cycle woody crops in Western Australia. Some $50 million has been expended on mallee development in the past decade and this has culminated in an engineering demonstration of integrated processing. The putative high value products are activated carbon and eucalyptus oil and the residue (plus waste heat) will be converted to electricity. The potential scale on which crops of this type would be required to achieve salinity control means that many more high value and residue products will have to be developed. Metallurgical charcoal appears to be a promising product option.

A novel approach is suggested for the solution of planning and development problems in the coal, mining industry. The formation of coal measures depends to a significant extent on sequential geological processes and events which are probably best defined in a "system of processes and responses." The great number of variables in such a system is a characteristic feature of geological environments. Research work over the past two decades, in particular, has successfully established analytical procedures for the identification and definition of relevant and irrelevant variables for mining developments in specific geological situations. Such situations are typifiable within the regional geological setting of coal deposits. Scale gaps can be bridged by reliance on common symmetrical attributes and pervasive geometric features. Depositional processes and their resulting attributes are responsible for the development of mechanically significant rockmass "defects" and anisotropies; such features have to be identified and assessed for the selection of colliery design criteria. It is suggested that the procedural frame- work of systems engineering analysis is a most appropriate tool for the assessment of those geological features that can influence the mechanical behaviour of the "floor-seam-roof" system in "high technology" mining operations of the future.
