The Palaeozoic rocks of north-eastern Laos are an attractive target for gold explorers due to the complex tectonic history and lack of past exploration in the region. Alluvial workings along the Nam Xiang River and its tributaries have highlighted the potential for gold mineralisation in the Vieng Kham region. The Nam Xiang River follows a regionally-extensive NNE-striking thrust fault. Adjacent to the Nam Xiang fault, the dip of the main foliation steepens, and in many places the stratigraphy is overturned as a result of this faulting.United Minerals and Mining Company conducted a regional exploration program to explore for gold. This included stream sediment and rock-chip sampling, and airborne geophysics. Geochemical anomalies were followed up with more detailed exploration, including geological mapping and soil sampling. Despite the relatively deep weathering profile, gold mineralisation is associated with a low-level but well-defined gold-in-soil anomaly. Drilling has shown that gold mineralisation occurs on structures and fabrics parallel to the main Nam Xiang fault. The highest gold grades are associated with brecciated sandstones that have experienced strong carbonate alteration. This suggests that late-stage structures such as the Nam Xiang fault are the major control on gold mineralisation in the region.CITATION:Greentree, M, Cunningham, M J M and Liu, J H, 2015. The Hamersley Iron ore resources are geologically complex with fluctuations in mineral chemistry. From this resource Hamersley Iron must produce consistently high quality direct shipping products and have the ability to evaluate the effects of changes in demand. In order to achieve these objectives an incremental long term planning technique has been developed. This method reduces the total geological resource statement into a simple, logical sequence of events. A logical sequence of mining increments is defined within individual areas based on a final pit and access system. Increment characteristics are derived manually and from a computer based orebody model. The end product of the technique, an optimum mining schedule, is readily developed from the incremental information. Among its many benefits, this simple technique rapidly provides management with information for policy formulation.

This paper describes the programing and specification requirements which affected the choice of excavation methods on the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop (M.U.R.L.). The various methods that were chosen are briefly described, and the three most used are compared in more detail. Excavation rates, cycle times and other statistics are compared for full face tunnel boring, full face drill and blast, and heading and bench using a road header excava- ting machine. The length of tunnel excavated is sufficient to enable meaningful statistics to be presented and the significant specifi- cation and geological factors are described to weight the statistics where necessary for purposes of comparison. Average tender prices are given for excavation and primary support to indicate the reimbursement sought by contractors to carry out this type of tunnelling.

Displacement Discontinuity Method (DDM), which was originally developed by Crouch,S.L., is a powerful tool to calculate mechanical disturbances due to tabular excavations. Three topics on DDM applications to strata control problems in Japanese deep coal mines are described. First, is numerical simulation of microseismicity induced by longwall mining in Horonai Coal Mine. Microseismicity in the mine had been monitored by a mine-wide seismic ar- ray. Location of microseismic events and in- tensity of seismicity were well simulated. In the simulation procedure based on DDM, first, zones where a failure condition is satisfied by the advance of mining are detected. Then, the seismic moments, which indicate the inten- sity of seismicity, at the failure zones are evaluated. Second, is prediction of the shaft damage due to mining in Sumitomo Akabira Colliery. In this mine, the limit angle of the shaft pillar was changed from 600 to 800 to increase the amount of minable coal volume without increas- ing mining depth. Displacement of the shaft axis has been measured to assess the damage due to mining around the shaft pillar. In the calculation based on DDM, a fault intersecting the shaft and the ground surface are con- sidered. Observed and predicted displacement of the shaft axis agreed well.

The selection of the ore haulage system is a key decision made in the development of an underground mine. The haulage system is one of the components that define a mineÆs ability to respond to changes in mining inventory and market conditions. The complexity of this decision for Telfer Deeps was affected by the realisation during the feasibility process that the true scale of the potential underground mineralisation at Telfer was still to be quantified. This paper provides an overview of the process used in the Telfer Project Feasibility Study to select an ore haulage system for Telfer Deeps. The purpose is to highlight the value of impartially approaching tasks of this type with a robust process. The process should be able to respond to issues identified as the task progresses towards the objective of finding the best solution for an ore haulage system for the mine. For Telfer Deeps, this process resulted in the selection of a haulage system built around a shaft. The systems considered during the feasibility are discussed and the components of the haulage system constructed for Telfer Deeps are described.

Qiagong skarn iron (copper) deposit is located in Xietongmen County of Tibet, China (N 29¦52Æ14.9ö, E 88¦24Æ10.3ö). It is situated at the middle-western Gangdese porphyry copper-belt. Mineralisation is related to a Himalayan porphyry intrusion, with the mineralised body occurring at the contact zone between the Tertiary Takena Formation carbonate rocks and Himalayan monzonitic granite porphyry. The melt, melt-fluid and fluid inclusions were observed in early quartz, with most abundant fluid inclusions in quartz, calcite and garnet from the skarn. The geology and inclusion assemblage show a close relationship between iron (copper) mineralisation and a Himalayan porphyry intrusion. Based on preliminary inclusion studies, this paper discussed the characteristics, evolution of ore-forming fluid and affiliation to the Himalayan porphyry intrusion. Gas velocity (Jg) measurements conducted close to the froth-pulp interface over the cross-section of a flotation cell reveal how efficiently the incoming air is being dispersed throughout the volume of the cell. Furthermore, measurements of Jg at deepest locations in the cell provide valuable information about air recirculation and dispersion conditions in the bulk volume of the cell. Gas velocity in flotation cells has predominantly been measured by a transient capture of gas in a graduated probe. In this project, a new sensor for measuring gas velocity in an on-line manner was developed. A probe is partially immersed in the flotation machine, below the froth-liquid interface. The probe is used to collect the rising air bubbles from the liquid phase. The liquid-froth interface is shifted into the probe under vacuum. A controlled vacuum is kept inside the probe. As air bubbles burst inside the probe, the excess of air is continuously removed from the probe via suction. The removed air is measured using a mass flow meter. The fully automated sensor allows us to continuously measure Jg at different location in a flotation machine. An experimental programme was carried out in a 10 cm diameter laboratory flotation column to determine the accuracy and repeatability of the automated sensor. The new sensor was used for evaluating gas dispersion conditions in a 215 litre transparent laboratory scale flotation cell. Gas velocity distributions along the radial and axial directions of the cell were measured over a wide range of operating conditions. The operating conditions in the cell were modified by altering impeller speed and air flow rate. Two different rotor-stator mechanisms were utilised to disperse the air in the cell, the MultiMix and the FreeFlow mechanism. In this paper, a description of the gas velocity sensor is given, and the results of the experimental work are discussed in detail.

When Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) purchased its fleet of 18 CaterpillarÆs dump trucks in 1999, as part of its change to owner operated mining, five CaterpillarÆs Computer Aided Earthmoving Systems (CAES) were also commissioned on Komatsu PC8000 hydraulic shovels and Caterpillar D10R bulldozers. Since then the CAES system has been installed and operational on Komatsu PC3000 hydraulic shovel, CaterpillarÆs D10R dozers and Cat 994 front-end loader while Cat 854 wheel dozer has been fitted with CAESbasic. This investment in advanced machine guidance and control technology has proven very beneficial over the years for the Super Pit with improved safety and increased operating efficiency and productivity. The paper brings into focus how the CAES system adaptation in unique mining conditions assists in production gain, equipment operatorÆs safety, flexibility and independence, personnel removal from hazardous areas, acquisition of operational information and improvements in mine planning and design, benefiting the entire mining operation.

The granitoid rocks in Burma can be subdivided into three main belts viz. (1) Eastern Granitoid Belt, (2) W-Sn related, Central Granitoid Belt and (3) Porphyry Cu (Au)-related, Western Granitoid Belt. The W-Sn related, central belt Granitoids were interpreted to have generated during the continent-arc collision and the Porphyry Cu(Au)-related, western grantioid belt was emplaced in a magmatic-volcanic arc above an east-dipping subduction zone. In the past year, two very innovative gold ore processing plants have been designed, built and commissioned by Gekko Systems Pty Ltd. The first plant in Vietnam utilises conventional crushing and ball milling followed by gravity concentration (Inline Pressure Jig (IPJ) and Falcon concentrator), flotation, intensive leaching (GFIL), the first industrial scale use of AuRIX«100å ion exchange resin and a cyanide destruction circuit. The second plant, in Australia, uses a three-stage crushing circuit to crush the gold ore to minus 1 mm, followed by gravity concentration utilising a rougher, scavenger, cleaner circuit of IPJs and a Falcon concentrator. A direct smeltable gold concentrate is produced as well as a lower grade concentrate for future intensive leaching or sale. Both plants were designed and built within very tight time frames and budgetary constraints. The experience gained during the plantsÆ design, commissioning and operation are discussed.

On a world scale, many Mid-Proterozoic fluvial sediments are prospective for low grade, large-tonnage gold deposits. A significant area of the Northern Territory is covered by such Mid-Proterozoic sediments, the gold potential of which has been barely tested. The geological knowledge of these sediments is summarised. The Westmoreland Conglomerate, the basal Mid-Proterozoic formation of the McArthur Basin, has been subjected to detailed sedimentological studies in order to determine the paleoenvironments and to assess the possibility of paleoplacer occurrences. The results indicate that the sandstones and conglomerates of the formation were deposited by braided rivers and debris flows as an alluvial fan which originated in source areas to the north east. The formation contains several upward-fining cycles of sedimentation, which are related to repeated periods of uplift in the source areas. The formation of placer-type gold occurrences is possible in such depositional environments. Very limited heavy mineral sampling has indicated a cassiterite- wolframite-gold suite in the sediments of the Westmoreland Conglomerate. Disconformities at the base of sedimentation cycles are deemed to be the most likely sites for large-tonnage paleoplacer concentrations.

Research into cemented rock fill at Mount Isa Mines Limited since 1992 is described. The key mechanisms controlling segregation during stope filling with cemented rock fill are described and include the gravity flow mechanism which is described in detail. Examples are provided to demonstrate these mechanisms. Comparisons are made between Mount Isa MinesÆ cemented rock fill and slurry-based cemented rock fills. Recent backfill stability modelling using a three-dimensional finite element program is described.

The Bendigo goldfield is centred on the urban area of Bendigo (population approximately 60 000) in central Victoria, 130 km north west of Melbourne, Australia. Gold was discovered at Bendigo in 1851 and production continued through to 1954. The Bendigo goldfield is the second largest goldfield in total gold produced in Australia, after KalgoorlieÆs Golden Mile with a total production of 22 million oz. The geology of the Bendigo Field consists of a series of tightly folded, interbedded sandstone and shale sediments. Within the sediments the gold mineralisation is hosted in quartz reefs or ribbons closely associated with anticline axes and reverse faulting. The gold within the quartz reefs is typically both coarse grained and erratically distributed.

Modem blast initiation systems allow users many options for connection and application in the field, and have resulted in more innovative and complex uses of sequencing to influence blast outcomes. However, no tool existed which allowed the blaster to easily and quickly assess the effect of different options. The original requirement was for a computer program which allowed the easy input of blast patterns and the associated initiation sequence, and then permitted the evaluation of different options with respect to established criteria such as the number of holes per delay and angle of initiation. The implementation of this goal saw the development of the SHOTPIan blast sequence design software, with particular emphasis on an easy-to-use menu driven interface and visualisation of the blast sequence. Extensive trialling during development saw the incorporation of additional features requested by industry such as the ability to import from established mine design software packages, and further features such as the calculation of burden relief times. Case studies of the use of the program are provided, where the rapid evaluation of a number of options has enabled blast results to be optimised. Three major and two minor uranium deposits 'have been worked by open out mining since the discovery of ,the Rum Jungle field in 1949. Total production has been about 9679000 tons of uranium ore at 7;39 lb U308/ton and 4029000 tons of copper-uranium ore at 6.27 lb U308/ton and 2.7% Cu, with significant tonnages of base'metal ores. The deposits occur in or near black pyritic slates of the Lower Proterozoic Golden Dyke Formation, near the contact with the under- lying Coomalie Dolomite. The mineralization is probably younger than the grahite complexes in the area, and a structural-stratigraphic control of ore deposition is used as a basis for uranium exploration.\

Coal mining has been occurring on the Stockton Plateau for over 100 years. As a result of both natural conditions and mining activities, surface water on the plateau is known to have low pH and elevated metals concentrations, a condition known as acid rock drainage (ARD). Solid Energy New Zealand Ltd (SENZ), as owners of the current mining operations at Stockton desire to understand the nature and causes of ARD at Stockton to determine whether commercially viable options can be developed to improve the water quality to levels acceptable to the local community and regulators. A series of integrated water quality investigations have been performed towards developing a characterisation of the water quality on the Stockton Plateau and receiving waters. The investigations performed include: design and implementation of a water quality monitoring program to collect a satisfactory base of water quality data from which to develop an understanding of the water quality and its variability, and to collect data regarding the range of flow rates that occur in the principal streams; development of a hydrological model for the Plateau with the ability to predict flow rates at key locations on the plateau and on the Ngakawau River; field investigations of the bio-diversity of the plateau and surrounding areas, to develop a snapshot of the health of aquatic communities and whether streams draining mine workings are æadversely impactedÆ; eco-toxicology; waste dump seepage water quality monitoring at selected basal springs, drilling, investigations and permeability and geochemical testing; data processing of a range of historical data and the newly acquired data for the development of empirical relationships that describe the water chemistry system and its relationship in turn to flow rates in the streams; simulation of the long term water quality record for the measured parameters (pH, acidity and metals concentrations), based on the hydrological model and the empirical relationships developed from the new database; and preliminary development and examination of mitigation options for the ARD issues at the mine. The study has progressed towards design of pilot studies of options for mitigation of the generation of the ARD as well as treatment of the discharges. It is the integrated approach adopted by SENZ from an early time in the investigations, that has enabled fast-tracking of the pilot engineering trials. This paper presents the results of the field investigations and eco-toxicology studies and demonstrates the value of predictive modelling of water quality in the study area, even at a very early stage in the remedial engineering design process.

Ore control systems at Ridgeway have been designed to deliver gold and copper metal production through focussing on the ore characteristics that impact on mine and mill performance and ultimately metal delivery. This is achieved using data collection and management systems which allow data to be collected digitally with æat captureÆ validation routines. This data forms the basis of forecasting systems which aim to accurately assess local in situ and drawn ore characteristics. Physical attributes of ore such as draw characteristics, brow conditions and visual grade estimation are rountinely recorded. Ore tracking and accounting systems monitor gold and copper grade, copper mineralogy, host lithology and ore sizing. These have material impacts on concentrator throughput and metal recovery. Routine reconcilation and check sampling allow calibration of these systems.

The iron ore mining operations carried out by Goldsworthy Mining Limited at Golds- worthy, Shay Gap and Sunrise Hill, in the Pilbara region of the North-West of Western Australia, are unusual insofar as the ore reserves occur in a number of widely separated and relatively small deposits, requiring deep mining below the water table, and even below sea level at the Goldsworthy pit. This paper has been prepared to describe some of the problems associated with these deep open cut mines, and the technology employed to overcome them, in order to provide an efficient and economical operation. The problems discussed are: 1. Development of the Dewatering System for the Goldsworthy Mine. 2. The Stability of Pit Slopes at the Goldsworthy and Shay Gap Mines. 3. Development of Diesel Electric Trucks for Lonq Uphill Hauls.

The provision of electrical power is an important consideration in project development. The first step to be taken in this area is to assess the power requirements of the project. The alternatives of laking a supply from a power authority or providing local generation can then be considered. This requires additional defmition of the probable characteristics of the supply.The availability of authority power in Australia is limited by the extent of the state power grids. Recent developments now allow these grids to be extended and their load capacity increased to meet major load increases at less cost than was previously possible.The options for local generation include diesel, gas turbine, steam, hydro, solar and wind, each having its particular performance characteristics and costs. The choice of fuel for diesel, gas turbine, and steam plant likewise involves consideration of a range of factors. The arrangements adopted for five recent Australian remote development projects indicate how some of these aspects influence the decision on power supply.

The basement contact zone, a major fault structure underlying the copper orebodies at Mount Isa, has a significant influence on orebody extraction. The zone is comprised of a variety of weak, barren lithologies which often create very difficult mining conditions, contribute to stope dilution, and have an adverse effect on concentrator recoveries.The geological characteristics of the contact zone are described, and the importance of timely, accurate geological information emphasized.A variety of mine design strategies have been employed to reduce the impact of the contact zone on orebody extraction. Some of these are discussed, together with current trends in the southern areas where orebody geometry and hence mining methods change markedly.Recent developments in ground support techniques, such as cable dowel reinforcement, have significantly improved ground conditions in the contact zone. An example of the methods employed to improve knowledge of ground behaviour is presented. The trend towards increasing automation and larger equipment requires larger excavations; consequently ground support practices and knowledge of ground behaviour must continue to advance. Rock mechanics investigations will remain an essential part of the mine design process.
