The conditions under which vanadium is rendered insoluble by silica in the alkali-roast process have been investigated starting with both slag and reagent-grade materials. The inert phase is a glass formed slowlyfrom soluble NaV03 produced at lower temperatures. It contains approximately 30 per cent V in a partly reduced state; iron is not a principal component. Some of the vanadium in the inert phase is slowly returned to a soluble form by heating in an oxidizing atmosphere below the temperature at which the glass is formed (750°C). As the reaction leading to the required, soluble form of vanadium is also slow between 600 and 750° optimization and control of the temperature profile and atmosphere in the furnace, and the residence time of the solids, are necessary to ensure high vanadium extraction during subsequent leaching.

Gold recovered on the strikes at the Central Norseman mill, Norseman, Western Australia, has an approximate assay fineness of 850. Bullion recovered from the cyanide plant at the mine is of much lower value, and occasionally its assay fineness has been as low as 250. This indicates either that the fine gold particles in the ore consist of an alloy richer in silver than the coarse particles or else that a silver mineral, as well as the gold, is dissolved by the cyanide solutions.It had been observed at the mine that the amount of silver in the bullion appeared to increase when galena appeared to be more abundant in the stoped ore. Interest was, therefore, attached to the possible occurrence of a silver mineral associated with galena and, at the same time, soluble in cyanide.Four specimens of ore from different horizons in the mine were collected by the mine staff for examination as to whether any marked difference in the fineness of gold was apparent on a polished surface and for determination of the silver minerals. As the Norseman ore-body is a quartz reef containing a very small percentage of sulphide, the specimens were selected either because they cont;:lined free gold or because they were, relatively rich in sulphides. They were obtained from the following localities at the Phoenix shaft.1. Level 16, section 28.2. Level 16, section 31.3. Level 8, section 31.4. Level 14, section 38.Specimens Nos. 1 and 2 were thus obtained from different positions at the same mining horizon, while specimens Nos 2 and 3 were obtained from different levels in the same vertical section of the mine.All the specimens consist of quartz characterized by thin, discontinuous seams of sericite and the presence of a little ankerite. Gold and sulphides tend to be localized along these seams, but particles of gold and sulphides are also scattered throughout areas of white quartz. This scattered distribution of the sulphides in relatively wide areas of quartz has involved the preparation of two or more polished sections from each specimen.The outcome of the microscopical examination of these specimens has been to determine that there is no appreciable variation in the colour of the polished particles of gold and, therefore, no marked difference in the amount of silver alloyed with the coarse and fine particles. The presence of small quantities of the tellurides sylvanite, hessite and altaite has been revealed, and found to vary in abundance with the abundance of galena.

Anglo American Platinum has adopted a strategy of Best Practice Principles (BPP) for sampling, mass measurement, analysis and metal accounting for more than a decade now. When new plants are designed, the most suitable sampling equipment and sampling protocols are implemented and material flows and plant layouts are designed around sampling strategies. A few years ago, a crushing plant for a high-grade matte stream was commissioned.The design called for the high-grade material to be crushed to 95 per cent passing 2 mm and the design allowed for a single cutter primary Vezin sampler, increments taken from a gravity flowing stream at regular intervals, whilst filling a tanker for the pneumatic offload at our base metal refinery. This was a single point of sampling and analysis that would measure the wanted output from our smelting complex and the input to our refineries. In addition, the design incorporated the functionality to collect increments in an ‘interleaved’ fashion from the Vezin sampler for internal precision checks.The metal accounting strategy for Anglo Platinum is the ongoing measurement of all inputs, outputs and stock levels for all our operations for platinum group metal (PGM) and base metal (BM) content. Included are yearly stocktakes, usually done on 1 February every year, across the smelters and refineries (at least the base metal refinery). A trend was developing in the accounting period immediately following the introduction of the new crushing and sampling facility, whereby the absolute difference between the physical stock and theoretical stock (PGMs predominantly) increased for the two respective sites on an ongoing basis. The smelter (sender) showed an increase in physical stock compared to the theoretical stock and the base metal refinery (receiver) showed that their theoretical stock increased against their physical stock. Because of this anomaly, an additional stocktake was held in September for the period in question and it was confirmed through the physical stock measurement results, that the PGM accounting problem was indeed pointing towards the evaluation of the high-grade matte stream.This paper showcases parts of the process that took place to explain the poor accountabilities for the respective sites. Previous results from the sampler ratification process (of the interleaved sampling design) were analysed again, a physical inspection was carried out on the sampling system again and the sampler performance was monitored (quality control parameters) for the period.From these investigations, it was found that airflows present inside the Vezin introduced the sampling bias and a change in sampling protocol was introduced as well as physical changes to the sampling equipment were made to eliminate the airflow and thus the bias conditions significantly. The accounting period which followed, after a phased upgrading process, showed that the accounting between our smelter and base metal refinery had been restored to within statistical limits (difference between physical and theoretical stock below five per cent relative to theoretical stock).CITATION:Kruger, C J and le Roux, E, 2017. Geochemical projects in progress or recently completed in the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology, and Geophysics (BMR) cover a wide range of topics and include research projects, regional studies, and prospecting programmes. However, in these notes emphasis is given to projects which are directly relevant to mineral exploration.FIELD INVESTIGATIONSStream sediment sampling, rock and soil sampling, and geobotanical surveys have been used by the BMR in a number of areas, partly in attempts to locate specific zones of mineralization, and partly to investigate the effectiveness of the various methods under different conditions of climate and topopraphy and in different geological settings.Stream sediment sampling has been most successful in the Territory of Papua and New Guinea. For example, in the South Sepik area, zones of disseminated su1phide mineralisation were found to give rise to anomalies with peak values of up to 1,000 p.p.m. copper, compared with background values of about 40 p.p.m. (Dow et al., 1968). By contrast, the results of rather limited work in the Northern Territory and in the Kimberley district of Westen Australia were inconclusive.Rock and soil sampling, on the other hand, was successfully used in a number of areas in Northern Australia, particularly at Rum Jungle and Tennant Creek.Rum Jungle area In the Rum Jungle area, where uranium and base metal mineralization is mainly associated with a Lower Proterozoic black slate sequence, samples, of c-horizon soil or weathered 'rock are generally collectedfrom the bottom of drill holes, usually 15 to 20 ft deep, bored with a power-operated auger.Surface sampling indicates that such a technique would probably have shown up all the major geochemical anomalies delineated by deep sampling, but the latter gives slightly more consistent and slightly

A mineral grain finder is described which is easily constructed to fit onto the stage of a standard reflected light ore microscope.The device is most useful in relocating particular grains or mineral associations on 30 mm diameter polished sections. The use of the grain finder in the teaching of ore microscopy is outlined.

As the chief field of the gold dredging industry in Otago is the district traversed by the Molyneux River (called above Cromwell the Clutha) and its tributaries, a brief reference to the geology of that region and the origin of its alluvial gold will not be out of place. The prevailing rocks are metamorphic schists, chiefly mica and quartz schists, pr.obably of Silurian age. Though these rocks do not contain many payable quartz reefs, gold appears to be distributed in small quantities all through them,chiefly associated with the quartz lamime and lenses. The river drift, however, contains numerous pebbles of quartzite, quartzoze conglomerate, and fme-grained slate. Seeing that these rocks are hardly known to occur in situ within the watershedof the Molyneux River, though Devonian and carboniferous rocks of similar character occur to the north-east and south-west, it seems probable that the schists were at one time overlaid by carboniferous and Devonian rocks, and that these have been removed by denuding agencies. Be this as it may, it is certain that the schists themselves have been greatly eroded by the action both of water and of ice, and that the resulting drifts have themselves, in many cases, been sorted and re-assorted by the same agents.Consequently the drifts are very varied in character and often developed on a grand scale. In geological age they vary from Early Tertiary (though some may be older) to Recent.

The structure of a comprehensive research project into mine fires study applying the Ventgraph mine fire simulation software, preplanning of escape scenarios and general interaction with rescue responses is outlined. The project has Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) funding and also relies on substantial mining company site support. This practical input from mine operators is essential and allows the approach to be introduced in the most creditable way. The effort is built around the introduction of fire simulation computer software to the Australian mining industry and the consequent modelling of fire scenarios in selected different mine layouts. Application of the simulation software package to the changing mine layouts requires experience to achieve realistic outcomes. Most Australian mines of size currently use a ventilation network simulation program. Under the project a small subroutine has been written to transfer the input data from the existing mine ventilation network simulation program to æVentgraphÆ. This has been tested successfully. To understand fire simulation behaviour on the mine ventilation system, it is necessary to understood the possible effects of mine fires on various mine ventilation systems correctly first. Case studies demonstrating the possible effects of fires on some typical Australian coal mine ventilation circuits have been examined. The situation in which there is some gas make at the face and effects with fire have also been developed to emphasise how unstable and dangerous situations may arise. The primary objective of the part of the study described in this paper is to use mine fire simulation software to gain better understanding of how spontaneous combustion initiated fires can interact with the complex ventilation behaviour underground during a substantial fire. It focuses on the simulation of spontaneous combustion sourced heatings that develop into open fires. Further, it examines ventilation behaviour effects of spontaneous combustion initiated pillar fires and examines the difficulties these can be present if a ventilation reversal occurs. It also briefly examines simulation of use of the inertisation to assist in mine recovery. Mine fires are recognised across the world as a major hazard issue. New approaches allowing improvement in understanding their consequences have been developed as an aid in handling this complex area.

BUCKETT (Lake View and Star Limited) : At the outset I should like to add my congratulations to those already extended to Mr..Norwood on his excellent paper, which has given us all an inspiration to strive further to improve our plant recoveries. In some respects this paper has left us so little to discuss without considerable time spent on. further research work. At all points one is met by a baffling array of facts which leave one feeling hesitant to speak.The careful and methodical way in which Mr. Norwood went along step by step until all channels of research presenting themselves were tested to his own satisfaction leaves me with but a few comments to make. Particularly striking to me is the explanation of the residual gold values in calcines by recrystallization of haematite and here is a line to be attacked by future studies. This will be mentioned again later.Particularizing on the paper, the first point that struck me was the method of change of pyrite through to the final haematite. I have never been able to satisfy myself that a sample taken from various positions along a roaster when cooled, as described on p. 397, represented a fair sample of the conditions at that point, but I must confess that I have not found a substitute that did satisfy me.However, the following figures are illuminating... But to fill dry a receptacle of known volume with calcines, as described by Mr. Norwood, gives the following apparentspecific gravities:

This paper is intended partly as a summary of the conclusions that have been arrived at by various authorities on this matter, and also with a view to initiate some discussion on the subject, especially as most of the quartz gold mines in Victoria are operated without having any proper assay plans or any idea of the real values other than those given by the mining managers, who, from experience in the particular cases, are supposed to be able to arrive at a correct idea of the true values of- the ore, and, in many cases, oppose any other methods than their own, holding the view that no sampling is equal in correctness to the bulk sample of the battery. The necessity of properly sampling and estimating the ore in a mine in every case, perhaps hardly needs to be urged on the members of the Institute, but is not, apparently, so obvious to others.It is proposed to confine this paper to the sampling of ore reserves in a mine, and the various points which have to be taken into consideration in arriving at values, from the assayer's point of view, leaving the methods of sampling metallurgical products out of consideration for the present. "It is advisable to define" ore reserves" as ore exposed on three sides at least, and accessible to the sampler on all three. "Prospective ore" would include all ore not so fully exposed; but which may, from the nature of the case, and the geological conditions prevailing, be reasonably supposed to exist.

The Pajingo gold operation in Queensland is approximately 55 km south of Charters Towers and 134 km south-west of Townsville. The gold deposit was discovered on the northern end of the Drummond Basin in 1983 and first open pit production began in 1986. Mining progressed underground in the 1990’s and gold production peaked in the early 2000’s as the main Vera/Nancy lodes were extracted, producing 330k oz in 2003 (a record at the time). More recently, as Ore Reserves and grade have diminished, the mine has had to develop innovative mining practices to maximise recovery of the remaining Mineral Resource. This has included a modified sublevel caving method against previously mined/backfilled zones. The method has been coined modified sublevel shrinkage (MSLS). Full scale trials of the new mining method have been successfully completed. This has allowed the site to revaluate the Mineral Resource and include areas into the Ore Reserve that were once deemed sterilised, adding significant value to the operation and extending its life-of-mine. This paper describes the first of two large scale MSLS trials and key operational learnings from it.

Spodumene was recovered from pegmatite by flotation in laboratory and pilot-plant tests using an anionic collector emulsion. A similar process applied to beryl pegmatite gave encouraging results.INTRODUCTIONOver the past two decades lithium and beryllium have aroused increasing interest in the metallurgical world. Both these light metals have potential uses in nuclear shielding and cooling and in lightweight alloys, and there is a growing demand for lithium chemicals for ceramics, air conditioning and lubricants. The use, technology and history of lithium has been surveyed by Schreck (1961).For many years, the only commercial production of lithium and beryllium was from pegmatite deposits amenable to hand cobbing. The most important minerals of these ores are spodumene and beryl, which are respectively lithium aluminium silicate and beryllium aluminium silicate. Norman and Gieseke (1940) investigated the treatment of lithium ores by froth flotation. The process of flotation of the pegmatite constituents away from the spodumene was applied commercially in 1951, and the operation has been described by Goter, Rainey and Hudspeth (1953). Subsequently, the flotation of the spodumene from the pegmatite was studied by Munson and Clark (1955) and Browning and McVay (1961), and this method has superceded the reverse flotation process commercially. Muskett, Tasker and Hobson (1962), in applying the method of Browning and McVay in pilot-scale tests, reported difficulty because of activation of quartz and felspar by iron salts introduced during milling of the ore.The flotation of beryl, reported by Ashton and Weir...

In the early stages of opening up a mine, when there is some uncertainty as to its future career, necessitating caution in laying out works of a permanent character, the want is often felt of an assay furnace, easily built and easy of transportation, should the" mine " prove to be " no mine." Again, cases occur in which parties buy the right to treat comparatively small heaps of tailings, and then shift their plant to other localities. Under these circumstances it is necessary to restrict the plant to the barest necessaries, to suit, so to speak, the nomadic character of the work.An assay furnace that is really portable, easily transported, erected, taken down, of little weight, always ready for action on short notice, is indeed in these cases a desideratum which has long been wished for. The gasoline furnaces introduced intothe Australian market some time since practically fulfil these conditions; but they have the fatal drawback of being dependent on a constant supply of the liquid fuel, gasoline, which is seldom, if ever, obtainable locally in' any wayback mining township...

A President, soon after he is appointed, sees looming ahead of him the Presidential Address; and in something approaching despair wonders what he can possibly talk about which might hold the interest of his audience. After various casts about, it occurred to me that perhaps prospecting, and more particularly prospecting in Australia, might provide a subject. This is because, 'in the first place, 'prospecting is passing from the stage of chance surface discovery to that of systematic search applying scientific methods to theproblems involved, and in the second, it is the section of the industry with which I have been concerned through much of my: working life. As it makes an address of this sort more interesting if it includes specific reference to actual experience, I hope you will bear with me in such references to actual prospecting as I may use to illustrate the argument. Prospecting has always carried the glamour of sudden wealth. The picture of the prospector engaged, perhaps for years, in fruitless search suddenly coming on riches beyondhis hopes is, deeply etched in the Australian imagination. In few other places has the fervour of prospecting run higher than it did in Victoria in the generation beginning little more than a century ago following the discovery of gold.People arrived from overseas in great numbers. Most of them proceeded to: the goldfields. They moved in thousands from new find to new find. In 'so doing' they determined much of the course of the State's development. The experience of prospectors led them to formulate all sorts of theories little impeded by awkward facts, to account for the apparently unpredictable occurrence of gold.The ideas which men followed, occasionally to success, and which they were prepared to back with all they had were strange and, various, many stories are told of them.

Particles of nickel flash furnace malle (45 per cent i) were oxidized in a dropping-particle furnace. The particles melted and the molten drops simulated those produced by the atomization of molten matte. The partly oxidized droplets were quenched and then reacted with silica flux to form high-grade matte (70 per cent i) and a fayalite slag. This paper describes the experimental equipment and deals with chemical aspects of the investigation such as volatile impurity distribution and thermodynamic considerations. The overall behaviour of minor elements such as Cu, Co, As and Pb was similar to that observed in conventional converting.

Although these earths were actually weathered basalts, the term is now applied to weathering profiles developed upon a wide range of bedrocks. The Ni-laterites are a special class within the broad laterite family.

The Mathews et al (1981) stability graph was developed to provide guidance in the determination of stope sizes to control dilution in bulk mining of large orebodies. Longhole and sublevel open stoping (LHOS and SLOS) are the lower end in scale of underground mass mining with panel and block caving (PBC) at the higher end. Currently, the stability states of stopes in the stability graph are described qualitatively as stable, unstable or cave. The alternative quantitative option to the qualitative stability graph is the Equivalent Linear Overbreak Slough (ELOS) stability graph. The ELOS stability graph only applies to narrow vein orebodies. It is easy for the Mathews et al (1981) and the ELOS stability graphs to be applied outside the limits of their databases. What is currently referred to as ‘stable’ in the present stability graphs has diverse interpretations at different mines depending on their acceptable dilution values. In 2014, a research program was conceptually conceived at the UNSW Australia School of Mining Engineering to develop a quantitative dilution-based stability graph independent of orebody width to address some industry concerns on the use of the stability graphs. A dilution-based stability graph provides the mining engineer the flexibility to determine open stope sizes based on what dilution amounts are acceptable. The graph also unifies both the Mathews et al (1981) and ELOS stability graphs for wide and narrow vein orebodies, thus, eliminating their potential misapplications. To date, the concept is proven with case studies from metalliferous underground mining operations located across Australia. This paper presents the dilution-based stability graph concept, the initial results and future plans to account for other critical factors and increase confidence in its application with the addition of more data outside Australia.CITATION:Suorineni, F T, Papaioanou, A, Baird, L and Hines, D, 2016. The Dugald River zinc-lead deposit is located 60 km northwest of Cloncurry. It was discovered prior to 1881, and since 1937, has been the subject of several drilling programmcs which have outlined a resource potential of 60 million tonnes grading 10 per cent zinc, 1 per cent lead, and 30 g/t silver.The deposit is a classical example of stratiform zinc lead mineralization in a black shale host. It occurs within a restricted clastic sedimentary basin within the Corella Formation of Carpentarian (Middle Proterozoic) age. Sabkha, lacustrine and fluvial sedimentary environments have been recognized within this basin. Each environment is characterized by suites of evaporite mineral pseudomorphs, after both shortite and gypsum, indicating that both alkaline and hypersaline environments prevailed at different times during basin evolution. The Dugald Slates which host the zinc-·lead mineralization are lacustrine in origin. Thin Mount Isa-type K-rich tuffite beds occur in the Dugald Slates and in the sabkha sequences.The basin as a whole appears not 10 have been marine, and 10 have had strong tectonic controls on its depositional history.The mineral deposit itself is conformable within the Dugald Slates and many primary sedimentary and soft-sediment deformation structures are preserved. It has a strike length of 2 km, average width of 10 m, and a westerly dip of 50-80 . Drilling suggests continuity to 1000 m vertical depth. The predominant sulphides are pyrrhotite, pyrite, sphalerite and galena in graphitic slate and quartz-carbonate ganguc. Anomalous concentrations of barium, manganese, cadmium, mercury and antimony are present in the ore.The deposit crops out over a distance of 2 km as a gossan ranging from 5-15 m in width. There is a striking vegetation anomaly over the gossanous outcrops. The gossan is enriched in lead, silver, antimony, barium, titaniulll, silica and iron, with respect to the primary mineralization. The depth of total oxidation reaches about 20 m.Cieochemical and geophysical test surveys over the deposit give pronounced anomalies.

The rapid advance in the adaptation of scientific knowledge to the treatment of ores, resulting in improved chemical and metallurgical processes, has enormously increased the possibility of working lodes profitably, which a few years ago were passed over as unpayable. By the discovery of chlorination, and later of "Cyanidation," by the highly improved methods of concentration, and by the rapid advance in our knowledge of smelting (for which we are greatly indebted to Americanmetallurgists), and by the gradual replacement of scientifing principles and enlightened management, for rule-of-thumb methods formerly in vogue, many large low grade bodies have been opened, and are now paying dividends, which were,twenty years ago, looked upon as hopelessly unpayable. It has been more especially in these large low grade ore bodies, that modern methods have been benefical; for small lodes must be rich to pay at all, as they cannot be worked on the same gigantic scale, but even in these a percentage of metal is saved which formerly was absolutely lost.To make these large deposits remunerative it is, however necessary to try and find the point of greatest economic advantage, to handle the ore in vast quantities, to erect huge plats to treat it, to substitute automatic appliances for hand labour as far as possible, and to combine several processes supplementary to one another, so that ore which is not amenable to one process, shall be saved, by another; and by doing...
