Indian Creek Mine, newest of the St. Joseph Lead Co. properties, is located in southeast Missouri on the flanks of a buried porphyry ridge. Here the orebodies are very irregular in size and shape and have a regional pitch of about 15°, which may vary locally from 0 to 90°. To maintain an economical grade of ore, selective mining is imperative. The room and casual pillar method is employed with 20-ft diam pillars 35 ft apart where possible. Stopes vary in height from 10 to 55 ft. All are too small to supply a loading unit continuously.

Work measurement is the most common of many titles given to determining the amount of human work required to do any job. A new technique-like most modern management tools-it still needs years of constructive research. Yet despite known imperfections, it is probably the most enthusiastically used tool of cost control developed in the last hundred years. Over 85 pct of all companies employing more than 100 workers in one of the major industrial areas use work measurement. For a good reason, however, this has not been true in the mining industry until very recently. The facts make an interesting story.

One of the first all-hydraulic crawler drills in service at a US open-pit mine has significantly exceeded the penetration rates of comparable pneumatic crawler rigs, according to Atlas Copco Inc. Overall production with the hydraulic unit has been double that of pneumatic crawlers in use. The installation is at the Foote Mineral Co. surface mine at Kings Mountain, N.C., where the company is engaged in mining spodumene, a combination of lithium, aluminum, and silicates. The ore is found in pegmatite dikes, a tough and abrasive host rock with compressive strength of tip to 5800 kPa (40,000 psi).

Deformation studies were performed on tuffaceous rocks fran Yucca Mountain, Nevada Test Site to determine the strengths and coefficients of friction under confining pressures from 10-50 MPa at room temperature. Frictional strengths of 30ºsawcut samples increased with pressure and reached values of around 150 MPa at the higher confining pressures. However, the failure strengths of the intact samples were quite unpredictable. The coefficients of friction ranged between 0.7 and 0.9 for all specimens. These data can be used in conjunction with in situ stress measurements at Yucca Mountain, to evaluate the potential for earthquake activity in the region.

Activity in coal preparation in 1967 was on the up-swing and all indications are that demands will be greater in the future. Feed tonnages to plants are increasing and a significant factor is that the top size being fed to plants is decreasing. This has been brought about by market demands, better cokability in some cases and emphasis on sulfur reduction in others. New plants are being built and some are in operation in the coal fields of southern Illinois. These plants are producing metallurgical coal in circuits that contain heavy medium cyclones and froth flotation on the - ½ mm x 0.

The recently completed liquid sulfur dioxide plant at American Smelting and Refining Co.'s Tacoma copper smelter in Washington last April is one step by the firm to meet ambient air quality standards in the vicinities of its three US copper smelters. At a capital cost of $18.5 million, the liquid SO2 plant will work together with an existing sulfuric acid plant to treat all gases generated by the copper converters. Designed to handle up to 45,000 cfm of converter gas utilizing the Dimethylaniline (DMA) process, this plant is expected to recover about 51% of the total smelter input.

Annual production of more than 4,000,000 tons of 0.74 percent copper ore and coincident handling of over 5,000,000 tons of waste at the open-pit mine of Castle Dome Copper Co. near Miami, Ariz. takes a lot of power. Manufacturers have ever co-operated with mining companies in providing the required equipment to suit the problem. Power equipment suppliers have done much to make possible the economic and profitable production of copper from low-grade ores. In the future, as mining operations will necessarily handle even lower-grade ores, the ability of the manufacturer to supply the power and mechanical equipment to produce more metal at a fair and reasonable price will be the good right arm of the miner. About 27,000 tons of concentrate is produced from the 4,000,000 tons of ore.

The greatest objection to be brought against the present methods for estimating phosphorus in iron and steel, is the time consumed in the operation. The following method, originated and perfected by Mr. E. D. Campbell, assistant in the chemical laboratory of the University of Michigan, will, 1 think, if carefully followed out, give results that are sufficiently accurate for technical purposes, and will give them in less time than they can be obtained by any other process. The process consists in comparing the color obtained by the action of stannous chloride upon a solution of the phospho-molybdate precipitate obtained from the solution of iron or steel, with that obtained from a standard solution of molybdie acid which represents a given amount of phosphorus. The operation is as follows : Take of ordinary steel 1 grm. and treat as in any of the wellknown processes until the phosphorus is precipitated as ammoniumphospho-molybdate. When precipitated, the phospho-molybdate precipitate is filtered out, thoroughly washed with an acid solution of ammonium nitrate, and, finally, twice with water, to remove most of the ammonium nitrate. The precipitate is then dissolved in about 1 c. c. of 10 per cent. potassium hydrate, which is let fall drop by drop on the filter till the precipitate is dissolved ; the filter is now washed with about 25 or 30 c. c. of water, and the potassium hydrate solution, which now consists of 25-32 c. c. of solution, is boiled until the peculiar frothy appearance, which first appears on boiling, is entirely gone. The solution is then cooled until perfectly cold, and about 10 or 15 c. c. of strong hydrochloric acid added ; if the solution is kept cold this will form no precipitate, but a light yellow or colorless solution. The solution is now ready for the addition of stannous chloride, and the subsequent comparison of color produced with that obtained from the standard molybdie acid. The comparison is made in tubes that are calibrated like carbon-tubes, but which are larger, about 5/8-inch bore, and graduated to 100 c. c.; this makes them about 18 inches long. Belting worth thousands of dollars can be ruined in a few minutes because of careless maintenance or lack of maintenance. Proper belt conveyor maintenance means having a clean conveyor system at all times. The belt line should be visually inspected during each shift. Equipped with proper maintenance instructions, one belt man can patrol a belt line of 2 to 3 km (1.5 to 2 miles). His duties would be to lubricate drives and idlers (except sealed-for- life type), maintain belt and conveyor frame alignment, detect sticking idlers, and maintain an unobstructed right-of-way.

Grad, the abbreviation for Graduate Resume Accumulation and Distribution, is a computerized information retrieval system operated on behalf of college placement officers around the country by the non- profit College Placement Council, Inc. Grad is free to all engineering candidates (regardless of the number of years of experience) and is a means of getting together college alumni who are seeking new employment and prospective employers. Who is Qualified? Candidates must have at least a bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university, or. in lieu of this, be accredited by a professional institute such as AIME as a full Member.

Data about shipments in this county are more plentiful than in most others. Canal records, although not complete, are available for 1837-1840, 1856-1857, 1859 and 1864. The census figures, and those of the reports of the Secretary of Internal Affairs, are very evidently too .low. Local consumption within the county has always been large, mainly due to the Cambria Iron Company, and other manufacturing plants, in Johnstown; here a large coke supply was made from coal directly from the mines, neither coal or coke being handled by any outside transportation agency. All available data is shown in Table 35.

SEAMSYS and CSD/SMP are sets of computer programs that assist geologists and mine engineers in modeling and evaluating coal properties. The systems are tailored for treatment of waste and coal quality data, including metallurgical coal product capabilities. The gridded SEAMSYS model honors all drillhole data and incorporates user- defined mining parameters, losses and dilutions, and operational constraints. A variety of reserve reports and graphic displays are available from the model. Preliminary mine planning is accomplished through automatic cut generation and production targeting. CSD/SMP refines the preliminary plans to help anticipate the consequences of various mine schedules and evaluate equipment capacity requirements.
