IN 1945, Illinois produced 75,210,000 bid. of oil, or 4.4 percent of the total for the United States, and ranked sixth in the nation in oil production for the third consecutive year. Production decreased about 3 per cent from that of 1944, when the total Illinois production was 77,413,000 bbl. This is the smallest percentage of decrease in production in the state for any year since a peak was reached in 1940. Daily average production for 1945 was approximately 206,000 bbl. In 20 years of commercial development, nuclear reactors have demonstrated that they are a safe, dependable, and economical source of power. Operating experience with commercial power reactors has firmly established nuclear power as a practicable source of energy. For both boiling-water (BWR) and pressurized-water (PWR) reactors, performances to date have generally met design predictions. Furthermore, it has become possible to analyze and understand the nuclear, chemical, and physical behavior of this class of reactors. The United Kingdom has had similar success with gas-cooled reactors. The Experimental Boiling Water Reactor (EBWR), the first United States experimental power reactor, began operation in 1956. It proved to be capable of supplying 4500 kw (kilowatts) of power. This reactor was followed in 1957 by the Pressurized Water Reactor at Shippingport, Pa. It was the nation's first full-scale central-station nuclear power plant and the first in the world designed exclusively for the production of civilian electric power. The Shippingport reactor was originally designed to produce 60 megawatts (MW) of electricity, and it was increased to 100 MW in 1964. In 12 years of operation, this reactor generated over 4.5-million MW-hr of electricity in spite of many shutdowns for experimental alterations. By 1969, a total of 15 central-station nuclear power reactors were operable in the United States with an aggregate electrical capacity of over 4200 MW. Early in 1964, Jersey Central Power & Light Co. announced plans for constructing a 515-MW nuclear plant at Oyster Creek, N.J., to be built without government financial assistance. The company stated that a nuclear plant had been selected competitively with fossil fuel. Their economic analysis stated that the plant would generate electricity at less than 4 mills per kw-hr, competitive with coal at 200 per million Btu (British thermal units). Coal cost in 1964 for that region averaged 26.00 per million Btu. The Jersey Central report created wide interest in public-utility circles; nevertheless, no other nuclear plants were announced in 1964. However, in 1965, six nuclear plants were announced by utilities, followed by 26 in 1966, 29 in 1967, and 10 in 1968. By Sept. 30, 1969, 97 reactors were operable, being built, or planned. The cost of these, all committed by electric utilities, was estimated at about $12 billion. When constructed, they will have an electrical capacity of 72,000 MW. The transformations in eutectoidal systems have been extensively studied as they occur in steels.&apos; As a consequence of these studies the martensite, bainite and pearlite reactions found for most steels are widely recognized. Further, because of the work of Smith and Lindlief2 and of Greninger and Troiano3 these reactions, except for the bainite reaction, are considered as typical for all eutectoidal systems. The primary alloy studied by Smith and Lindlief2 was a CuAl alloy of near eutectoid composition as was the alloy more recently studied by Mack.4 The transformations in these alloys were, for the most part, studied metallo-graphically, while an X ray analysis of structures was essentially wanting. It has appeared desirable, therefore, to investigate selected CuAl alloys at and slightly away from eutectoid composition. For this purpose three alloys were prepared containing 10.5,11.9 and 13.5 pct A1 respectively. The results of a metallographic and X ray analysis of structures obtained for isothermal transformation of the ß-phase are reported here for the 11.9 and 13.5 pct A1 alloys. Introduction The phase equilibria in the CuAl alloys of immediate concern are indicated in the equilibrium diagram section presented in Fig 1.5 The equilibrium and transition structures which have been reported in this system are as follows: a = copper rich terminal phase (f.c.c.) ß = high temperature eutectoidal phase (b.c.c.) r2 = aluminum-rich intermediate phase (r-brass structure) a&apos; = modified a-phase postulated by Bollenrath and Bungnrdt.26 ß1 = ordered ß (b.c.c.) ß&apos; = martensite structure: A1 < 13 pct (near h.c.p.) ß" = ß&apos; of Smith and Lindlief2 7&apos; = martensite structure: A1 > 13.5 pct (h.c.p.); ß2 of Bollenrath and Bungardt.26 The eutectoid transformation can be suppressed at sufficiently high cooling velocities. The ß-phase is then retained to about 500°C where ordering sets in. The ordering interval is not satisfactorily known but indirectly appears to be non-suppressible. Subsequent to the ordering reaction and consequently at lower temperatures, the ordered ß1 decomposes to a marten-sitic structure. The kinetics of these reactions and in particular those of the martensite reaction have an important bearing on the results obtained in this investigation. Since some confusion exists concerning certain reported aspects of these reactions, they will be considered in some detail. THE experiments of which the results and significance are set forth in this paper do not by any means cover the whole subject of the heat-treatment of the material referred to, yet they constitute a contribution to that general subject, rather than to the special department of annealing. The material here considered is acid open-hearth steel, containing from 0.50 to 0.80 per cent of carbon, with a nearly uniform percentage of other elements. This class of steel is rapidly increasing in commercial importance. It is even rumored that the rail-specifications of some railroads will hereafter require open-hearth steel. Yet this particular grade seems to have received less study and description from the standpoint of the metallographist than many others. The investigation here described was directed to the following points:-Steel containing about 0.50 per cent, of carbon : 1. The structure as related to the temperature, at the same rate of cooling; 3. The structure and physical properties as related to temperature at different rates of cooling; 3. The structure and physical properties as related to different finishing-temperatures and different rates of cooling; 4. The bearing of these observations upon the statement of Prof. Albert Sauveur.1

SOME months ago one of the authors was asked to write a paper on the heat treatment of steel castings that would be more comprehensive than other matter lie had published; this is an attempt to present in condensed form the results of experimental work and actual practice carried out for the most part in 1907, 1908; and 1909. It is not a laboratory research and the work done was carried out for the express purpose of putting in practice the processes discovered as fast as possible. Most of the tests are the result of commercial practice and not of bars annealed in our laboratory; most of the micrographs were made for our own records and not for publication. Certain of the micrographs, therefore, are not as clear as we may wish but they were good enough for our purpose at the time they were made. The tests and micrographs are selected from several thousands in our files. All of these micrographs are magnified 60 diameters. These experiments were conducted almost entirely on steel made in a 3-ton bottom-blown converter, and most of the steel illustrated analyzes about 0.05 in phosphorus and sulfur. Unfortunately, a certain number of specimens are shown of which we do not have the complete analysis, but in most cases in which the phosphorus and sulfur vary much from the figure just given that fact is noted. For purposes of comparison, we have included a certain number of micrographs and tests of steel made in the electric furnace, some of which were from specimens made in other shops and some in our own shop, and some tests of acid open-hearth and tropenas steel.

From 1955 to 1958 the Phillips Petroleum Co. conducted a series of small scale counterflow combustion field tests in a tar sand about 60-ft deep and 6 to 12-ft thick near Bellamy, Mo. A total of seven different well patterns, including conventional five-spots and seven-spots plus a 15-well line drive pattern and a 10-well radial pattern, were employed. Electric heaters, gas burners and wellbore fuel packs were tested as counterflow ignition devices. Direct drive ignition followed by reversal to counterflow operation was not possible in this case because of formation plugging by the semi-solid tar during the direct drive phase. Sustained counterflow burning was achieved with wellbore fuel packs under conirolled conditions which permitted close correlation of fire front velocity, air velocity, air-oil ratios and yields for a wide variation in process parameters. The tar in place was about 10&apos; APl with a reservoir viscosity greater than 500,000 cp. The composite oil prodlcct was 26&apos; API with a viscosity in the range of 5 to 15 cp. Vertical sweep efficiency in the line drive pattern was essentially 100 per cent, with no evidence of gravity segregation. Original tar in place ranged between 800 and 1,000 bbllacre-ft, specific rock permeability averaged about 800 md before burning and effective air pemeability with residual oil and water in place (at the time of ignition) averaged 250 md. The volume of oil recovered during stabilized line drive counterflow burning represented about 67 per cent of the volume of tar originally in place in the burned out zones. A minimum was found when air-oil ratios were plotted against formation air velocities, and a limiting air velocity existed below which the counterflow fire front reversed and burned back over its own trajectory, using the residual coke left behind. INTRODUCTION Early in 1955 the Phillips Petroleum Co. began preparations to field test counterflow underground combustion as a method for producing oil from high viscosity hydrocarbon deposits, such as bituminous (tar) sands. At that time all published information on the use of underground burning io increase oil recovery was based on the direct drive process, in which the fire front moved through the formatim in the same direction as the injected air stream. Such direct burning is not applicable to many heavy oil sands or to most tar sands because the heat-thinned native hydrocarbon congeals in the cold rock ahead of the fire front forming a gas permeability block which smothers the combustion. Laboratory experiments first demonstrated that this permeability blocking would not occur if the fire front and the air stream moved in opposite directions. In this counterflow (reverse) burning process the heated heavy oil or tar is driven back through the combustion zone. Here thermal cracking produces relatively light hydrocarbon products which pass through the heated rock behind the fire front (largely in the vapor phase) and are incapable of causing a gas permeability block.&apos; Exploratory wring revealed that consolidated bituminous sandstones with a combination of tar saturation, permeability, thickness and depth favorable for experimental field testing existed at several points in western Missouri. By the fall of 1955, a test site for determining technical feasibility of the counterflow process under field conditions had been selected near Bellamy, Vernon County, Mo. — about fifty miles north of Joplin. The pay zone was too thin and too shallow to constitute a commercial prospect, but these same factors permitted controlled experimental operation with a small compressor installation and with a large number of monitor wells. These were needed for adequate observation of the underground phenomena at reasonable cost. RESERVOIR CHARACTERISTICS The reservoir chosen for the experimental field tests was a 124 thick section of tar sand extending from 49 to 61 ft subsurface, with shale and siltstone laminations sealing the top and bottom. This section was part of a larger 30-ft thick tar sand deposit which extended both above and below the test zone. Core analyses showed that the 12-ft sand was effectively subdivided into two approximately equal sections, with the lower zone being consistently more permeable than the upper zone. The most significant laboratory core data are summarized in Table 1. The line drive test which is the principal subject of this report utilized only the lower 6-ft thick zone, with the upper zone regarded as part of the 55-ft overburden. WELL PATTERNS The over-all field test program involved a total of seven different well patterns, including conventional five-spots and seven-spots plus a 15-well line drive pattern and a 10-well radial pattern. I regard it as one of the most important papers that have been presented on this subject, and worthy of complete study. I started out, on the limited time I had, on a system of study which I would recommend to any one else who has leisure to complete the investigation. I took the original report presented at the Cincinnati meeting, and selected from it&apos; such tests as had the analyses reported along with the physical tests, giving the amounts of carbon, phosphorus, manganese, etc., taking only those in which all these elements are given.

ACIDIZING, as the terns is used in the petroleum production industry, involves the use of hydrochloric acid in predominantly limestone formations, resulting in the lowering of resistance offered to the flow of oil and gas through the oil-bearing formation, usually with resultant increased production. A number of articles have been written on the chemical treatment of oil and gas wells; a bibliography of these works will appear in Volume 123 of the Institute&apos;s TRANSACTIONS (1937), and a few other references are appended to this paper.

At the meeting of the Board of Directors of the Institute on Jan. 26, 1917, the following actions were taken: Messrs. A. C. Clark, Lawrence Addicks and G. D. Van Arsdale were appointed Tellers to count ballots for Officers and Directors. Messrs. T. T. Read, V. S. Harper, and. E. J. Hall were appointed Tellers to count ballots on revised spelling. The Finance Committee&apos;s audit for the year 1916 was approved and ordered filed. The Report of the Finance Committee upon the method of raising this Institute&apos;s share of the deficit on the additions to the building was approved and accepted. Upon the recommendation of the Secretary, increases in the salaries of some of the employees were approved. The St. Louis Section received an appropriation of $200 for the year 1917. The Columbia Section received an appropriation of $150 for the year 1917. The Montana Section received an appropriation of $100 for the year 1917. The Colorado Section received an appropriation of $175 for the year 1917. The Utah Section received an appropriation of $125 for the year 1917. The Puget Sound Section received a set of Transactions in standard binding. The International Engineering Congress received a loan of $300 until the Congress can realize upon some of its assets.

1. INTRODUCTION. AT the Lake Superior meeting, September, 1904, Messrs. A. Gibb and R. C. Philp presented a paper entitled " The Constitution of Mattes Produced in Copper Smelting,)&apos; in which they concluded that ferrous and cuprous sulphides formed the chemical compound, 5 Cu2S, fee. They arrived at this inference from the observed fact that a matte containing Cu2S, 90.4, and Fee, 9.6 per cent (or, in round figures, Cu2S, 90, and Fee, 10 per cent.), did not contain any metallic copper, while one with more than 10 per cent of FeS readily dissolved copper, and with less than this amount retained copper in mechanical suspension. Although they determined the melting-points of five mattes containing from 32.6 to 80.1 per cent of copper, they did not draw a freezing-point curve, as the necessary apparatus was not available. A microscopical examination of 11 polished samples, gave them a grayish-black field of very uniform appearance, except that 5 of the specimens showed the presence of metallic copper. The object of the present investigation was to supplement the above paper by drawing the freezing-point curve of the series ferrous sulphide cuprous sulphide, and to see how the constitution could be further, revealed by microscopical work. The results obtained lead to conclusions very different from those of Gibb and Philp. While their paper bears the date 1904, it was published only in 1906.2 In the meantime, Bolles3 had presented his paper, "The Concentration of Gold and Silver in Iron Bottoms." The raw material which formed the basis of the research was a matte containing Fe, 61.68, and Cu, 11.20

Prospectors were digging silver in the Ray mine area in 1873, and by 1880 high-grade copper ore was feeding a 30-ton copper furnace. In 1910, D. C. Jackling and his associates organized the Ray Consolidated Copper Company, known in mining circles as Ray Con, to exploit the Ray orebody. For 50 years, all mining was underground and the Ray mine was known the world over for innovations in mining methods. It was the first to mine important tonnage (8,000 tpd) by block caving methods. The mill at Hayden, 26 miles (41.6 km) from the mine, kept pace with the new mining methods developed at Ray and in the early 1920&apos;s flotation replaced gravity concentration by the vanner machines. First mining by open pit methods began in 1950 and in January 1955 all underground mining was discontinued. The new primary crushing plant, installed in early 1967, featured design simplicity with a low capital cost. The 54 in. gyratory crusher was installed within a total height of 6 1 ft (18.65 m) from the truck dump road bed to the floor beneath the feeder-conveyor under the surge pocket. The crusher is fed by 120-ton trucks dumping from one side only into a 200-ton hopper equipped with a horizontal splitter bar to protect the crusher spider. The crushed ore pocket, of 120 -ton live capacity underneath the crusher, discharges to a 0 to 200 fpm (61.2 mpm), variable-speed, 72 in. by 80 ft long (1.83 m by 24.4 m) sloped belt feeder, probably a first in the industry. Wood-picking stations are provided on either side of the belt so that old mine timbers and tramp iron can be removed from the crushed ore and the wood can be dropped into Dempster containers located below the belt. Counter-weighted finger gates control the bed depth on the belt at 14 in. (356 mm) and a low- level radiation unit automatically maintains a minimum of a 3 ft bed (900 mm) of material on the belt directly under the surge pocket. The conveyor is skirted for its full length and is approximately 60 in. (1.52 m) wide inside its metal skirt liners. Ten impact idlers at 12 in. (305 mm) spacing are provided under the loading pocket and remaining idlers are spaced at 18 in. (457 mm). The belt is 1 ¼ in. (31. 8 mm) thick; and, while it has occasionally been damaged by tramp material, belt life averages 11 million tons. DOUBT in anyone&apos;s mind that this is the age of metals, industrially speaking, could easily have been dispelled by attending the National Metal Congress in Chicago, Sept. 22 to 26. Iron, copper and aluminum; zinc, lead and nickel, often alloyed with each other or with some of a dozen minor metals, make the materials without which the modern world could not run. Science, pure and applied, is doing marvels in finding new mixtures, new alloys to meet new needs; in developing new means of rolling, fabricating, casting and welding metals cheaply-and effectively. These and related matters were the subject of 100 papers presented at 33 seperate sessions of the organizations that participated in the congress.

FEW people realize the tremendously important part that Saline and Pulaski Counties in central Arkansas have played in the winning of the war. The present favorable war situation might have been very different if we had not had the bauxite produced during the past two years from these two small areas, a total of about 15 square miles. As a general statement, it can be said that the Arkansas bauxite deposits are, individually, relatively small, irregular in thickness, somewhat scattered and, therefore, compared with coal or iron-ore or open-pit copper deposits, relatively ill adapted to a rapid and drastic expansion in output. A few years ago it would have seemed an impossibility for these two counties to produce over six million long dry tons of bauxite in one year. However, with the cooperation of the operators, that is what happened in 1943, when the state of Arkansas achieved the seemingly impossible with a production of 6,020,684 1 long tons (dried equivalent) of bauxite ore during the calendar year, compared with an average annual production of 323,725 2 tons in the period 1931 to 1941. It became apparent early in the year 1941 that the United States soon might be drawn into the war, and, therefore, that an immediate study of the domestic metal situation was necessary. Aluminum is by far the most important metal used in the manufacture of aircraft and many other implements of war and it was evident that there would have to be a tremendous increase in the domestic production of bauxite, which is practically the only present source of this metal. As more than 95 per cent of the known bauxite reserves of the United States was in Arkansas, careful preliminary studies were made in that state by representatives of the United States Bureau of Mines, the United States Geological Survey and the War Production Board in the summer of 1941. Reserves in other states also Were studied. The result of these studies was a recommendation by the War Production Board that mining in the bauxite-producing areas of Arkansas be geared for maximum production, in order to supply sufficient ore for this country&apos;s war requirements and, if necessary, to supply the war needs of Canada as well. The annual goal of eight million long tons (dry Weight) set for Arkansas by the War Production Board Was exceeded in 1943, when in August the output reached a rate equivalent to more than 8,300,000 long tons, dry basis. Because of the comparatively small tonnage of bauxite reserves, Congress appropriated funds for an extensive drilling program to be carried out by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Geological Survey. Drilling began in May 1942 but owing to delay in delivery of drills, and trucks upon which the drills were mounted, the program did not get into peak operation until early in 1943. DIATOMS are microscopic aquatic plants of the order Bacillariaceae. They are unicellular plants with skeletons made up of amorphous opaline silica. The skeletons show highly ornate, complicated geometrical designs. Diatoms live in water virtually everywhere. They are found in clean sea water, brackish water, and fresh-water lakes and ponds. When conditions are right, diatoms propagate by subdivision in huge numbers. Alkalinity, temperature, and the presence of high concentrations of silica in the water largely control diatom life. When the diatoms die the skeletons drop to the bottom of their habitat to form oozes of vary-ing thicknesses. DIATOMITES Diatomite, or diatomaceous earth, is composed essentially of the siliceous remains of the diatoms, although other organic skeletons are also present, especially in sea-water deposits where radiolaria, sponges and silico-flagellates are common. Impurities are generally carbonaceous material, fine-grained silt, volcanic ash and dust, and occasional coarse grains of sand. Diatomites are marine, brackish, or fresh-water, depending upon types of diatoms and their method of deposition.

GOLD was discovered in Alder Gulch, Virginia. City, Mont., on May 26, 1863. In a short time some 6000 people flocked to the new discovery, and on the banks of Alder Gulch six settlements sprang into existence, the principal one, Virginia City, alone surviving. This town today has a population of 800, and is the county seat of Madison County. It is estimated that between forty and fifty million dollars in gold was produced up to 1904. Virginia City is situated at the mouth of Alder Creek where that stream leaves the narrow canyon that cuts the steep foothills flanking Old Baldy Mountain, elevation 9572 ft., 12 mi. south. Virginia City itself is 5700 ft. above sea level.
