The effect of fabrication variables on the creep-rupture properties of TZM (Mo-0.5 pct Ti-0.08 pct Zr-0.03 pct C), Cb-TZM [columbium-modified TZM (7140-1.5 pct Nb-0.5 pct Ti-0.8 pct Zr-0.05 pct C)], and TZC (Mo-1.2 pct Ti-0.25 pct Zr-0.15 pct C) has been studied at 982º. 1093º, 1204º, and 1315°C for rupture times up to 1000 hr. The creep tests were performed in vacuum creep furnaces, employing cold-trapped oil-diffusion pumps, operating at pressures 2 X 10-7 tory. After-test chemical analyses showed no significant changes in interstitial content. The creep-rupture properties of TZM, fabricated according to current mill practice, were determined in the stress-relieved and in the re crystallized conditions to provide control data. Specimens of TZM, Cb-TZM, and TZC fabricated according to each of two experimental fabrication schedules were then tested. The schedules differed in terms of in-process annealing temperatures and warm -working temperatures. The data make several conclusions evident. Fabrication variables do indeed have a profound effect on the long-time creep-rupture properties of molybdenum alloys. Strengths of these alloys compare very favorably with those of other refractory metal alloys in the temperature range studied. FOR several years we have been engaged in the evaluation of the creep-rupture properties of promising refractory metal alloys. We consider the determination of these properties to 1000 hr at several temperatures necessary for a valid comparison. Such an evaluation indicated that the creep strengths of Mo-0.5 pct Ti and TZM (Mo-0.5 pct Ti-0.08 pct Zr-0.03 pct C) compare favorably with those of other refractory metal alloys. Tensile and recrystallization data of other investigators1,2 show an effect of fabrication variables. More specifically, those fabrication schedules which produce high strength through work hardening exhibit the least thermal stability. A similar conclusion was reported by perkins3 for Cb-TZM. This would lead one to expect that, in terms of creep, those materials showing higher strength at short times and low temperatures would exhibit lower strength at long times and high temperatures. If these expectations were fact, a substantial improvement could be made in these alloys by optimizing their fabrication schedule in terms of their anticipated service temperature. We therefore undertook a study of the effect of fabrication variables on the long-time creep properties of TZM, Cb-TZM (Mo-1.5 pct Cb-0.5 pct Ti-0.08 pct Zr-0.05pct C) and TZC (Mo-1.2 pct Ti-0.25 pct Zr-0.15 pct C). MATERIALS All materials used were supplied by the Climax Molybdenum Co. of Mich. Our original intention was to test the same heat of each alloy in different conditions. Fabrication difficulties prevented this; however, heats with nearly identical analysis were selected. The compositions of the materials used are listed in Table I. All materials were supplied in the

Evidence has been accumulating in recent years, in part from the work of the Coal Research Laboratory, that coals belong to a family of natural polymers and that even in complex reactions the differences between coals are quantitative and not qualitative. This point of view leads to the expectation that if a series of coals were subjected to a closely controlled set of experimental conditions the results obtained should be related to the chemical analyses of the individual coals. The data accumulated over the past 10 years by the Bureau of Mines in its ('Survey of Coke-, Gas-, and By-Product-Making Properties of American Coals," in what has come to be recognized as the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) carbonization assay test,l-l2 offer an unusual opportunity to check this conclusion. The present paper reports an analysis of the data on the first go coals and coal blends— including coals numbered I to 55B, inclusive —which have been carbonized according to a standard procedure at intervals of 100°C. from 500° to 1100° in either or both 13 or 18-in. cylindrical retorts.13 In Table I are given the name of the seam from which the sample was obtained, the analytical data used, and the reference to the original publication of the Bureau of Mines. The coals range in fixed carbon from 46.2 to 79.0 per cent, in volatile matter from 15.4 to 41.3 per cent, in ash from 2.1 to 15.9 per cent, in moisture from 0.8 to 19.7 per cent, and in total sulphur from 0.40 to 4.44 per cent; therefore the entire gamut of bituminous coals is represented. The petrographic nature of the individual coals is not considered in the following analysis, although both "normal" bright coals and splint coals are included in the samples studied. For information on the petrography of the coals and for further information characterizing the coals the original papers should be consulted. Although the coals that are included extend over the whole range of bituminous coals, they do not cover this range entirely adequately. In particular, only 13 of the 90 coals have moisture contents greater than 3 per cent. This concentration at low moisture values means that the effect of moisture, which is an important factor, cannot be determined with as much certainty as would be desirable. All the coals were not tested at every temperature and in both retort sizes. Only the first 30 coals were tested at 1100°, and only about 50 at the other temperatures, except at 900°, where nearly all of them were included. In the accompanying tables the actual number of observations entering into each correlation is given. In this study equations are given for calculating analyses, yields, and properties of coke and by-products from the coal analyses. To decide whether these equations are satisfactory it is necessary to know the accuracy with which these quantities were measured in the assay tests.

This paper presents the results of a complete reservoir studv designed to determine a sound economic program for the conservation of oil and gas in the Pickton field, Hopkins County, Texas. The Pickton field produces from the Bacon Lime with all indications of the study being that production is predominately by dissolved-gas drive. Calculations of the total ultimate recovery to be expected under primary operations indicated only 16.7 per cent of the oil originally in place would be recovered. This unusually low recovery is due to the type of drive operating and the extremely high dissolved gas-oil ratio and shrinkage. Results are presented for six plans of returning gas to the reservoir, evaluated to determine (1) comparative recoveries and economics of (a) returning gas at a constant rate by supplementing Pickton gas with extraneous gas during the early portion of the operation, and (b) conventional gas-return operations without using extraneous gas, and (2) the optimum size of compressor plant for each type of pressure maintenance. The over-all economic program considers, for either type pressure maintenance operation. a gasoline plant to process the unusually rich casinghead gas. Since pressure maintenance will disturb equities, pooling of royalties is in the case of Pickton a prerequisite to conservation of oil by this type of operation, both from an economic and legal standpoint. In the event pooling of royalties cannot be achieved, the study considers a gasoline plant to operate under a modified primary production operation which will make the conservation of gas possible. INTRODUCTION The Pickton field, located in Hopkins County, Texas. was discovered in November, 1944. by the completion of Humble's C. D. Nichols 1, in the Bacon lime of the Lower Glen Rose formation, through perforations from 7,888 to 7.896 feet. The well initially produced 50.2 API gravity oil with a gas-oil ratio of 1,350 cubic feet per barrel. Subsurface samples of the reservoir fluid obtained soon after completion of the discovery well showed that the Pickton crude is unique in that it has an extremely high dissolved gas-oil ratio and is subject to very severe shrinkage. Calculations of the future behavior of the Pickton reservoir indicated that ultimate oil recovery by primary operations would be 3,269,000 barrels, representing only 16.7 per cent of the oil in place (19,577,000 stock-tank barrels), and that recovery could be substantially increased by returning the produced gas. The cumulative production of 1,382,694 barrels on November 1: 1947, amounted to 42.3 per cent of the estimated ultimate oil recovery from primary operations. The purpose of this study is to determine and evaluate the optimum program for conservation of oil and gas in the Pick-ton field, including the desirability of conducting gas-return operations and of installing a gasoline plant. INTRODUCTION RECENT work by the authors1 on the oxide films formed on alloys of titanium and zirconium with nickel and copper indicated that an investigation of the oxides which form on alloys of copper and nickel might permit the relative rates of formation and diffusion of the ions of. these metals to be determined. This binary system is of further interest since the alloys which form are of the solid solution-type over-the entire range. In addition nickel is much more oxidation resistant than copper. A comparison of the free energies of formation of the simple oxides which may occur on these alloys indicates that nickel oxide should be observed over the entire time and temperature ranges of oxidation for all alloy compositions.1 In. order for nickel oxide to predominate on the surface, it is necessary that nickel ions form and diffuse to the surface. Two factors which may influence the formation of nickel oxide may be the ionic sizes, where Cu+ is 0.96Å and Ni-++ is 0.70Å, and the charges on the ions. On the basis of size, Ni++ should diffuse more readily than Cu+ while on the basis of charge, Cu+ should form more readily than Ni++. According to Uhlig2 passivity to corrosion in an alloy appears at a critical composition which for copper-nickel alloys is related to the tendency of the d band of electronic energy states to fill with electrons. This composition in the copper-nickel alloys corresponds to 40 at. Pct nickel at which composition Uhlig2 (quoting La Que's data) states that the alloy system becomes passive. Magnetic and specific heat data indicate that the d band of copper-nickel alloys is filled at 6o at. pct copper or 4o at. pct nickel. Mott and Jones3 have shown that if, on alloying nickel with copper, one considers a copper atom to be identical with a nickel atom except for an extra electron (nickel -has the-configuration: 3d8 4s2 and copper: 3 d10 4s) then at 60 at. pct copper or 4o at. pct nickel enough electrons are contributed by copper to fill the d band of the alloy. At this composition the magnetic susceptibility approximates zero according to Grew.4 Although the electron diffraction data will not determine the rates of the several reactions which may occur during oxidation, yet a determination of the structures of the surface oxides may yield information concerning the relationships, if any, which may' exist between the oxide structures which form and that composition where the magnetic susceptibility approximates zero. It is quite possible, of course, that the mechanisms of the oxidation and corrosion reactions may be so widely different that no correlations between them may be possible. SURVEY OF LITERATURE The metals, copper and nickel, which are face-centered cubic, form solid solution alloys which are face-centered cubic with no superstructure for all compositions. An examination is made of the various factors influencing drilling rate and drill bit life in various diameter holes. It is concluded that drill bits in the size range 4% to 6 1/4 in. can be used to attain substantially the some daily drilling progress as conventional size bits in soft rock drilling operations. An examination of the most important factors influencing "hazard of losing the hole" in the different hole size results in the conclusion that the smaller hole sizes can probably be drilled at reasonably low risk. However, this risk will be somewhat greater in the smaller diameter holes, requiring that special drilling and mud engineering practices be used to make small diameter holes practicable in soft rock drilling operations. An engineering analysia is made of the power and hydraulic requirements of several drill string-hole combinations to test the feasibility of drilling .small diameter holes in soft rock areas. Large econormies in rig power requirements appear possible by drilling .smaller .size holes in these operations. INTRODUCTION The industry now is re-examining the utility of small diameter holes in the light of substantial technical advances made in recent years. Faced with increasing cost of finding reserves and with proration after developing them, the industry must either develop methods of economizing or receive a lower rate of return on investments. Small diameter holes appear to involve an attractive method of economizing. Our objective is to determine if this is technically possible in soft rock operations. Soft rock, as used in this report, refers to those formations of a "drill-ability" corresponding to that of all Gulf Coast formations shallower than and frequently including much of the Eocene rock system. An important phase of technology which we shall examine is relative drilling rate and bit footage which may be obtained with various size bits. Rig operating efficiency, particularly as influenced by hazard, is also discussed in detail. The technical conclusions resulting from these examinations are used to develop sample drill string design and rig horsepower requirements for drilling holes as smaH as 4 3/4 in. and larger. The principal criterion used for the drill string design is that approximately the same daily drilling progress would be possible in all size holes in soft rock operations. This facilitates a comparison of rig size required for drilling the hole sizes in the range between 4 3/4 and 8 3/4 in. BROAD PROBLEM OF DRILLING RATE AND BIT FOOTAGE The three factors controlling daily drilling progress are: (1) drilling rate of bit while on bottom turning, (2) bit footage, and (3) rig operating efficiency. Let us look now at the first two of these factors. Drilling technology has progressed to the point that a semi-quantitative analysis of the effect of various operating variables upon these factors can be made. Those factors which apparently limit both drilling rate and bit footage for bits now in use are: (1) bit design, (2) weight on bit, (3) hydraulic cleaning capacity for bit cutting surfaces and hole bottom, and (4) rotary speed. (We neglect the effect of mud and formation properties because these factors arc the same for the various size bits.

The trace element geochemistry of the cherty clay-rich carbonate residuum cover in much of southern Missouri and adjacent parts of Arkansas was investigated during the earl 1970's as part of a statewide geochemical survey of Missouri.1-8 The study was environmentally oriented and focused on the character of the "natural" geochemical environment of the state. A great deal of effort was made to collect samples that would represent the geochemical variability of the near-surface environment in an unbiased way. In general, this was accomplished by use of randomization procedures in both collection and analysis. Most of the sampling sites were selected randomly to prevent personal bias from entering into sample selection. In the laboratory, samples were analyzed in a randomized sequence to circumvent the effects of any systematic bias that may have entered into the laboratory procedures. Several residuum samples contained 1000 parts per million (ppm) or more of lead, zinc, and barium. All these samples were collected in Washington County in or near the barite district. The frequency distributions shown in [Fig. 1] indicate just how unusual the residuum in Washington County is with regard to these three metals and copper. The shaded parts of the histograms represent the samples from Washington County. The histograms are based on analyses of 141 samples from 38 localities scattered over the subcrop of the Cambrian and Ordovician formations of southern Missouri and northern Arkansas. Eight localities were selected randomly from over each of four bedrock units-Bonneterre dolomite; Potosi and Erninence dolomites; Roubidoux formation; and the Jefferson City, Powell, and Cotter dolomites. Six localities were selected randomly from over the Gasconade dolomite. The geochemical "background" for these elements in residuum is defined by samples from outside of Washington County (unshaded part of the histogram); lognormal distribution curves have been fitted to the corresponding parts of each histogram. Clearly, these lognormal models (curves) describe well the background distributions of zinc, barium, and copper. The background histogram of lead concentrations is notably skewed to the right compared to the model. Lognormal distribution curves were also fitted to the data on lead, copper, and zinc in the residuum of Washington County. No model was fitted for barium in Washington County because of the distinct bimodality in the data. All samples containing more than 1000 ppm were collected in the barite mining district and obviously reflect the elevated levels of barium in the district. The frequency distributions for Washington County are clearly anomalous with respect to the background data, those for lead, zinc, and barium being exceptionally so. The models for anomalous lead, zinc, and copper seem to fit reasonably well, although the scatters in the lead and zinc anomalies are considerably larger than the scatters in the corresponding background data. The copper anomaly, although probably real, is greatly subdued compared to that of lead and zinc. Also, it has a scatter similar to that of the copper background, rather than being enhanced like the scatters of the lead and zinc anomalies. Cyril Stanley Smith in his classic 1948 Institute of Metals Lecture&apos; noted in the case of annealing twins that: "It is well known that approximately the same number of twins per grain and the same general geometry are maintained in large grains as in small ones, a fact that certainly suggests a mechanism such as the above where boundaries and twins grow proportionately together. If this view is correct, a spherical grain should have no mechanism for keeping its twins." Such a constancy of twins per grain would be of particular interest as a tool for the study of the origin of annealing twins. It has been proposed by Mathewson2 and later by Barrett3 that in face-centered cubic metals slip occurs in the {111} Plane by <112> shears which combine in pairs to produce the macroscopically observed <110> movement. This proposal is schematically inviting since <112> slip permits the atoms of one plane to move along the interatomic valleys of its neighbor rather than up the hills across the atom sites. There is strong experimental evidence? that annealing twins result from the growth of nuclei in the form of "twin faults" produced by single <112> shears. It is possible that more twin faults would form at low deformation temperatures than at high ones, because the more rigid lattice may increase the tendency to "freeze" the twin faults and prevent their dissipation in slip. This is suggested by (1) the greater resistance to slip at low temperatures and (2) greater tendency toward mechanical type twinning at low temperatures (a summary of these factors is presented by Seigle and Brick5). These considerations would suggest the following: a. Constant twin/grain ratio for specimens deformed constant amounts at a constant temperature, but annealed at various temperatures above the recrystalliza-tion temperature. b. Larger twin/grain ratios for re-crystallized specimens previously deformed constant amounts at lower temperatures. The purpose of this investigation is to test these considerations. One half in. rods of phosphorous deoxidized electrolytic copper and 70-30 alpha brass (68.36 pct Cu, 0.005 pct Pb, 0.01 pct Fe, 31.62 pct Zn remainder) were rolled to a thickness of 0.350 in., milled to specimens 0.350 X 0.437 X 2 in., and annealed at 700°C to an average grain size of 0.065 and 0.090 mm, respectively. These specimens of each metal were then rolled 50 pct reduction in thickness and annealed one hour under conditions which were all combinations of the following: Rolling Annealing Temperatures. Temperatures. °C °C -70 400 25 500 200 600 Standard metallographic techniques&apos; were used to prepare specimens. By the method of lineal analysis7 using a minimum of ten samples of fifty grains each for each specimen, the ratios of twins* per total grains, twins per twinned grain, twin families* per total grains and twins per twin family were determined. Recrystallized grain size was determined by A.S.T.M. comparison methods.8 All observations were made on the rolling plane. The results are tabulated in Table 1.

It is an accepted procedure to represent oil field displacement problems in which the pressure is relatively constant by a potentiometric model. Variations in reservoir permeability thickness product are represented in the model by proportional variations in electrolyte depth. It is shown that significant errors are present wherever these variations are of such magnitude that the consequent differences in the electrolyte depth in the model or any regions therein are appreciable in comparison with their respective horizontal dimensions. To demonstrate the order of magnitude of this error, a hypothetical linear oil field in which permeability varies linearly with distance was treated both analytic.ally and by potentiometric model. The results obtained from the model are compared with the exact solution for various configurations of linear geometry. Deviations in flow times up to 11 per cent were observed. It is confirmed that these discrepancies can be reduced by increasing the areal scale and/or decreasing the vertical scale of the model. It is the purpose of this work to assist in the design of potentiometric models by indicating the relationship between this error and the chosen scale factors. INTRODUCTION The fundamental geometrical criterion which determines whether the pressure distribution in an oil or gas reservoir may be simulated in a conventional potentiometric model is the requirement that all reservoir parameters be constant along any vertical line between its upper and lower boundaries. This situation never obtains exactly; nevertheless, it is usually assumed that there is no permeability stratification within the section of interest, that all wells completely penetrate the sand, that there are no gravitational effects, and that variations in thickness of the sand are small compared to the horizontal extent of the field. In these ways the reservoir problem is reduced to two dimensions in which there is no variation of pressure in the vertical direction within the limits of the sand. Variations in sand thickness and/or horizontal pesmeability may be taken into account as described by Muskat, by considering the fluid conductivity of the reservoir in its horizontal plane to be proportional to the product of permeability and sand thickness. If the variations in sand thickness are small compared to the horizontal dimensions of the reservoir, then it is a good approximation to consider the reservoir problem to be essentially two dimensional. The same approximation, however, is made in the simulation of the assumed two-dimensional reservoir by the electrolytic model. The model, if it is to take into account variations of permeability-thickness product, must of necessity be made in three dimensions, that is, with variable depth. Most potentiometric model studies and theoretical treatments reported in the literature to date2,3,4,5,6,7,8 are those in which either an average permeability was used or a constant permeability was assumed. Recent works by Plaksh et al.,1,2 Glembotsky,3 and others have renewed interest in the effects of oxidation on the surface activity of the sulfides. Since considerable supporting data are available on galena-potassium ethyl xanthate, this system is being studied at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology by contact angle measurement, using the technique of McGlashan and McLeod.4 The contact-angle method is well adapted to investigation of the influence of small amounts of oxygen on the establishment of a stable contact angle on galena in potassium ethyl xanthate solution. Samples of massive galena containing less than 0.001 pct Cu, 0.001 pct Ag, and 0.01 pct Zn are mounted in castable plastic and ground and polished manually in a glove box containing the desired proportions of oxygen and purified nitrogen. Oxygen and nitrogen contents of the test atmosphere are determined with an Orsatt analyzer. In this way a reproducible surface is created in contact with whatever oxygen concentration is desired. Water and all reagents are prepared and stored in the test atmosphere. An absorbent is used to control carbon dioxide that might be present. Final polishing is done with levigated alumina on a glass plate. The prepared sample is placed in the test solution and transferred to the contact angle apparatus in a sealed box, and the test is conducted while both sample and solution are maintained under a slight positive pressure of the test atmosphere. Table I gives the results of contact angle measurements made at various 02-Nz concentrations.5 Each value of contact angle is the average of at least six individual measurements made with different bubbles at different locations on the sample surface. A period of 20 to 25 min has been found by preliminary tests to be sufficient to permit develop- ment of maximum angle, and all measurements are made after at least this much time has elapsed. Exposure of prepared samples to pure water under the test atmosphere before exposure to the xanthate results in a small but measureable and consistent reduction in contact angle. This is particularly true in the oxygen-deficient atmospheres; for example, at 2.2 pct O2 such water contact reduces the average angle about 8" from that obtained by immediate testing in xanthate. The general trend of increasing contact angle with increasing oxygen concentration corresponds to the results of Plaksin et a12 The absence of diminish-ment of contact angle at very high oxygen concentration has been attributed to the high concentration of xanthate per unit of galena surface: At oxygen concentrations below 1 pct (the limit of accuracy of the Orsatt analyzer), no contact angle is obtained. Furthermore, no contact angle is obtained at any oxygen concentration in the absence of xanthate. This result seems to be in disagreement with those cited by Plaksin.1 Further work on the interaction of galena and potassium ethyl xanthate or a similar collector as influenced by oxygen is contemplated. The true nature of the interrelation is as yet unknown. For example, it is not known whether the governing oxygen reaction is with the mineral, with the reagent, or with both.

Five or six alloys each in the systems Ni-C.v, Ni-Mo, and NL-W, spaced to cover the single phase areas as well as a part of the adjacent two-phase field, were prepared as uacuum-melted alloys. Tensile tests at room temperature and stress rupture tests at 1200° and 1500°F we.ve run for time periods to give fracture in 0.1 to 500 hr. Observations mere made of solid-solution and second-phase strengthening or uleakening, coupled with studies of ductility and the role of structure on the noted behavior patterns. THE development of stable creep-resistant alloys while broad and systematic is also highly empirical. A number of simple rules have been suggestedL-" but these are based on scant data. Whereas rules for low-temperature alloy strengthening can be applied with some success in more simple systems, the extension to behavior at high temperatures (greater than about 0.4 of the absolute melting temperature) is very poorly understood and has encountered important exceptions and deviations in terms of atom size or valency effects. In particular, the occurrence of both solid-solution weakening4,5 and second-phase weakening2 at high temperatures is of interest. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE Nickel was chosen as the base material because of its important role in current high-temperature alloy applications, because of its freedom from a phase transformation, and because of wide solubilities for many elements of interest. The selected alloys were single- and two-phase structures in the Ni-Cr,6 Ni-Mo,7 and Ni-w 8 systems. The alloys were vacuum melted and cast, utilizing high-purity raw materials, in the form of 15 lb ingots. They were readily forged into 1/2-in. bar stock (except the two highest chromium alloys). The alloy compositions are shown in Table I. Typical impurity values are: Carbon: Max 0.03 pct (except for 30 and 35 pct Cr alloys which had 0.07) Nitrogen: Max 0.005 pct (except for two of the Cr alloys which had 0.05) Sulfur: Max 0.004 pct Silicon: Max 0.05 pct Each alloy was solution treated (air quenched) to produce comparable grain size. The two-phase alloys were then overaged in an effort to produce a stable structure for testing at 1200° and 1500°F, The results are summarized in Table 11. Following the heat treatments outlined in Table 11, the bars were machined to a gage section of 1.25-in. long by 0.250-in. diam. In addition to room-temperature tensile tests, stress-rupture tests were run at 1200" and 1500°F for time periods from 0.1 to about 500 hr. RESULTS Room-Temperature Mechanical Properties—The ultimate tensile strength, total elongation, and reduction of area values for all the alloys are plotted vs atomic percent of the solute element in Fig. 1. It can be seen that for the same amount of solute element the ultimate tensile strength increases in the order chromium, molybdenum, tungsten. Elongation increases (reduction of area decreases) with increasing amounts of solute for all the solid solution alloys, the values ranging from 50 to 70 pct. SINCE the Saar started. the real progress in scrap-metal recover is in the change of point of view regarding secondary metals. The tendency had been to regard scrap as the normal outgrowth of obsolescence, fluctuating somewhat from periods of depression to periods of prosperity. but nevertheless an unwieldy economic factor more to be contended with than embraced. Now, metals above the ground are being looked upon as semi-permanent reserves or stock piles in various stages of repeated use or revolving life cycles. The change in point of view is due to the forced realization that domestic supplies of new metals are limited and many foreign sources are at least temporarily closed. The stock piles must be cultivated. The reserves must be made more nearly permanent. Steps are being taken : (1) develop methods for recovery of scrap metals heretofore not recovered, and (2) restrict strategic metals to uses ensuring a large percentage of re-use, which in turn means substitute materials in the dissipative uses.

COAL research during 1941 had a marked increase in activity on problems bearing directly on furthering the increased and improved use of coal in homes and industry. Coal producers and fuel engineers expressed a greater interest in its practical possibilities and the coal laboratories have shown an increased interest in applied research, of value at once or in the near future to industry and the public. A large volume of accomplishment in mining, coal analysis, and the fundamentals of coal constitution and coal chemistry also continued to fill the storehouse from which applied research and fuel engineering of the future can draw valuable data.

MAGNETITE mining and milling in the Eastern States was sharply curtailed in 1938, production showing a decrease of 36 per cent from 1936 and 57 per cent from 1937. Six mines, one in Pennsylvania, two in New York, and three in New Jersey were in operation, either part or full time, during the year. In recent years ten Eastern magnetite mines have been more or less active but since the World War the market for Eastern ores- has been spotty. The scrapping of Eastern merchant pig iron furnaces, imports of cheaply mined duty-free foreign ore, and high freight cost have been contributing factors.

In diamond or churn drilling for the prospecting of ore bodies, two products can be used for quantitative analyses; i.e., the core and the cuttings, or sludge. Some operators prefer an assay of core; others insist that the sludge be sent for analysis. Both must recover the sludge for check samples or for assays if there is no core recovery for any particular section of the diamond-drill hole. The Freeport Sulphur Co. found that numerous cumbersome sludge boxes or barrels were inconvenient and delayed drilling. The sludge settled slowly in the ordinary shallow, rectangular diamond-drill boxes and its total removal from the container was difficult, time-consuming and unsatisfactory; and sampling of deposits of which the metal contents are easily concentrated, as in ores containing cinnabar, gold and silver, is subject to error if the boxes are not thoroughly cleaned. Mr. Charles Ballard, dredge superintendent at Freeport&apos;s operation at Grande Ecaille, Louisiana, developed a portable cone while he was in charge of prospecting a mercury property near Tonopah, Nevada, in 1940. Ballard later improved the design while the settler was being used at a manganese property in New Mexico. The operation is based on the "free settling" of comminuted particles in a quiescent liquid. The ordinary sludge box discharges over a lip 8 to 12 in. wide and consequently the water has sufficient velocity so that the discharge water is never clear. The cone settler used by Free-port Sulphur Co. discharges over the entire circumference, which gives a discharge ltp of 9 ft. in the size of cone used at the cinnabar and manganese prospects. Consequently, the velocity of the discharge water is slow enough so that all fine material settles and the discharge water is clear. When the drilling of a sample interval is complete, the sludge can be drawn off by the time the driller is ready to cut another sample. Thus, only one cone is needed per drill. The cone has been used by Freeport successfully in churn-drilling a manganese deposit, in diamond-drilling a mercury deposit, and in diamond-drilling a deposit of ore containing tin, copper, gold and silver. The cone is greatly superior to the old methods of collecting sludge and is now used on all Freeport drilling campaigns in the western states, both for surface and underground drilling. Fig. I shows the important details of a cone designed for average operating conditions, 30 in. in diameter and 36 in. high. Abnormal conditions may require some revisions in design. Fig. 2 shows a working drawing. A hose or pipe larger than the one used to convey water from the pump to the swivel head of the string of rods is connected to the stuffing box at the collar of a diamond-drill hole, The usual T-connection is used. It is not necessary to use a stuffing box if the top of the cone can be placed lower than the collar of the hole. Then the return water and cuttings can be made to flow by gravity. Bentonite, designating a distinct type of clay, is a young name in mineral nomenclature in the light of the age-old names of most other useful nonmetallics. The earliest references in literature are to "soap clay" (1873) "taylorite" (1888) and finally "bentonite" in 1897, from its occurrence in the Fort Benton series of rocks near Rock Creek, Albany County, Wyoming. Bentonite is a rock term and consists largely of montmorillonite clay. The latter name was proposed in 1847 for a plastic clay found at Montmorillon, France. A clay of apparently identical properties was described by Cronstedt of Sweden in 1788 and a number of other similar clays found in France were given other names in publications from 1853 to 1856. The mineral name montmorillonite was recognized by Dana in 1892. The recognition of "clay mineral" distinctions which led to the present-day classifications of clays by their chief mineral content, dawned in the early part of the twentieth century. Grim6 has aptly said: About 1924, Ross10 and some colleagues of the U. S. Geological Survey began a study of the mineral composition of clays that led to a series of monumental papers on the subject. By the early 1930&apos;s what has come to be known as the clay-mineral concept became firmly established in the minds of a great many people actively studying clay materials. The clay mineral concept designates the major clays as kaolins, montmorillonites and illites and by this concept bentonites are now defined as "fine-grained clays containing not less than 85 pct montmorillonite" and a wide variety of clays found all over the world are included in that classification. They could all properly be called "montmorillonite clays" but the common commercial name is bentonite. For a period of over forty years from the time of the earlier discoveries, bentonite was thought to be only the sodium type highswelling clay produced principally in Wyoming. By the clay mineral concept, non-swelling montmorillonite clays also became known as bentonite. In the trade there are two broad divisions-sodium bentonite, often called Wyoming or "western," which expands in water and carries sodium as its predominant exchangeable ion, and calcium bentonite often called "southern," which has negligible swelling and carries calcium as its principal exchangeable ion. There are many intermediate gradations. Properties The mineralogy and chemistry of the clays are so complex that the subject cannot be summarized briefly. The reader is referred to Chapter 12 of this volume in which the subject is treated at some length. Grim6 gave the formula for montmorillonite as (OH)4Si8AL4020.nH2O. He wrote: Montmorillonite is composed of units made up of two silica tetrahedral sheets with a central alumina octahedral sheet. . . . Exchangeable rations occur between the silicate layers. . . . The words "tetrahedral" and "octahedral" refer to the coordination number of the cations in the unit cell in the crystallographic lattice. Carroll5a stated: That the montmorillonite structure is the same as that of mica, but the layers are not held together by K+ ions; and water and other polar molecules, such as organic molecules, can enter between the unit layers and cause expansion. THE British are worried about the postwar possibilities of their coal mining industry. Indeed, there are causes for this worry, with the aver- age 1943 cost of production at about $5.40 per long ton, compared to $3.20 in 1938. Average production per man day has dropped from 1.12 in 1938 to 1.03 long tons in 1943. As a comparison, production per man day in the United States is approximately 5 long tons. The average day wage in the British mines is now a little aver $4; in 1938 the average day wage was about $2.25. Great Britain produced 227 million long tons in 1938 from their deep mines, and in 1943 production was 194.5 million, with an additional 4.5 million from strip mines. To meet present wartime needs, output is being supplemented by the production of strip- mined coal, an industry that did not exist prior to the war. Strip mining is now producing at the rate of 15 million long tons per year.
