The removal of sulfur from steel has been studied by many investigators, but the quantitative relationships between the factors involved have not been determined. This is undoubtedly due to the number of variables encountered in practice, an attempt to study any one reaction or relation being affected by other reactions the relative importance of which cannot be estimated. The factors that affect the extent of removal of sulfur in the basic open-hearth process are generally considered to be: 1. Basicity of the slag: (a) Iron oxides in the slag; (b) carbon in the metal or carbide in the slag; (c) temperature. These factors affect the reactions: FeS + CaO = CaS + FeO FeS + CaO + C = CaS + CO + Fe. 2. Amount of sulfur in the gas. 3. Amount of manganese in the metal. The factors which affect the rate of removal of sulfur include, in addition to these: 4. Fluidity of the slag: (a) Normal changes in fluidity with temperature; (b) changes in fluidity because of the addition of special reagents such as fluorspar. 5. Agitation of the bath. Within the past two years, two papers have been presented dealing with the influence of sulfur in the gas on slag and metal. Electrical ad thermal-conductivity measurements have been made on titanium and 6 titanium alloys. The following expression was derived for calculating thermal conductivity from electrical conductivity: K = 0.626 s T x 10-8 + 0.00497 where K = thermal conductivity, cal sec-1 cm-2 cm0C-1 s = electrical conductivity, ohm-]cm-1 T = temperature, deg Kelvin This expression gives calculated thermal conductivities that are not in error by more than 10 pct from the experimental values for A-55 titanium and the 6 alloys measured; namely, A-110AT, C-110M, C-130AM, Ti-6A1-4V, Ti-140A, and Ti-155A, which are representative of the presently available commercial a and a-ß titanium alloys. THERMAL conduction in a gas, liquid, or amorphous solid is accomplished by energy diffusion from molecule to molecule, a relatively slow process. For this reason, such materials have a low thermal conductivity. When a material is crystalline, there is in addition a heat transfer by a vibratory motion of the crystal lattice. It is the contribution of this lattice conduction that makes a crystal a much better conductor than a gas, liquid, or amorphous solid. Lattice conduction, however, does not account for the relatively enormous thermal conductivity of a metal. This is explained by the freedom of movement of valence electrons. These valence electrons drift in a metal in a direction toward a drop in electrical potential and, to a lesser degree, in the direction of a temperature drop in the metal. Since both the electrical and thermal conductivities of a metal depend upon the presence of free electrons, there should be some relatively simple relation between the two. Wiedemann and Franz in 1653 first discovered an approximate empirical relation between the electrical and thermal conductivities of metals at the same temperature. This ratio varies appreciably with temperature, and Lorenz later showed that by adding a temperature factor to the Wiedemann-Franz ratio the value of K/(s T) is constant, where K is the thermal conductivity, a the electrical conductivity, and T the absolute temperature. This Lorenz constant shows a greater variation for alloys than it does for pure metals, the ratio increasing slightly as the proportion of alloying elements increases. It has been found that a closer correlation between electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity can be obtained by means of an equation of the form K - A s T + B [1] where A and B are constants. In this equation the term AsT is the contribution of electronic conduction and B is the contribution of lattice conduction to the total thermal conductivity. EXPERIMENTAL MEASUREMENTS Electrical-resistivity and thermal-conductivity measurements on titanium and 6 titanium alloys serve as the basis for determining an equation of the K = AsT + B type for titanium alloys. Specimens—Table I shows nominal compositions of the 7 metals on which electrical and thermal conductivities were measured. The electrical and thermal-conductivity specimens for each alloy were taken from stock of the same heat and usually from adjacent sections of the same bar. A new and unique logging tool, called the Borehole Televiewer (BHTV), has been developed to inspect boreholes and to evaluate formations. Even though geologists and engineers have had only about 3 years' experience with the BHTV, the thinking of many of them has been radically influenced by the fascinating and revealing "log-picture" recorded with the tool. The BHTV fills a need for a logging tool that can produce a direct and descriptive record of the physical properties of the borehole environment. Although primarily developed to evaluate fractured reservoirs, the BHTV has been used successfully to solve a variety of problems related to formation evaluation and borehole inspection. Geologists and petroleum engineers have been confounded for many years by the problems of locating and evaluating fractures. Interpretation of the usual resistivity, acoustic or radioactivity logs, as well as the analysis of cores, for evaluation of fractured reservoirs is extremely difficult and often not definitive. This is understandable since analysis of cores from fractured formations has reported variously: (a) low porosity, (b) no effective permeability, (c) lack of any matrix oil saturation and (d) oil stains on fracture planes as the only indications of potential production.14 In recent years acoustic amplitude logs have been introduced and used with varying degrees of success to locate fractures.8'9'11"13 Conventional amplitude logs at best give only qualitative answers where quantitative ones are desired. The logs reveal nothing of the orientation of the fractures. In addition to these logs, various types of cameras, television, and rubber impression packers have been used for borehole inspection. (See Appendix.) The BHTV logging tool supplies both the quantitative and the orientation answers about fractures. The borehole can be filled with any homogeneous, gas-free liquid such as fresh water, saturated brine, crude oil or drilling muds. This tool takes an "acoustic picture" of the borehole wall. The resulting log is a representation of the borehole wall as if it were split vertically and laid flat. The log is oriented with respect to magnetic north. Any physical changes in the borehole wall are seen as changes in picture intensity. In this way, fractures, deformation or pits are reflected on the log. Tool Description The fundamental parts of the BHTV are shown in Fig. 1. A piezoelectric transducer probes the borehole wall with bursts of acoustic energy. A flux-gate magnetometer senses the earth's magnetic field and provides the means for determining the orientation of the log. A motor rotates the transducer and mag-

THE {120}(001) texture has been reported in near 50 pct Ni-Fe alloys <0.004 in. thick1,2 and in copper 0.014 in. thick.3 This texture is one of two types of secondary recrystallization textures observed to replace a cube texture matrix and is desirable in Fe-Ni alloys because of its unique magnetic characteristics.1,2 However, the conditions for and mechanism of the {120}(001) formation are not well understood.3 During an investigation of the influence of alloying elements on the magnetic characteristics of 49 pct Ni-Fe alloys with a sheet thickness of 0.014 in., we have observed the growth of {120}(001) secondaries when strong deoxidizers such as aluminum and calcium were present. It is believed that this observation in unique and provides additional insight with regard to the mechanism for {120}(001) texture formation. Three alloys were prepared with electrolytic iron and nickel and contained a nominal 49 wt pct Ni. Alloy A was a straight binary Fe-Ni alloy, whereas intentional additions of 0.013 wt pct Ca to alloy B and of 0.59 wt pct A1 to alloy C were made. Ingots were forged at 1100 C, hot-rolled to 0.150 in. gage, pickled, and cold-rolled to 0.014 in. Standard U-shaped magnetic test specimens were punched, deburred, sprayed with MgO, and annealed in ~50°C dew point hydrogen. Textures were identified with the aid of etch pits, the

The Huntington Beach oil field is on the Pacific Coast, southeast of the City of Los Angeles (Fig. 1). It lies both onshore and offshore. Most of the onshore section is operated by Standard Oil Co. of California, WOI. The Tar reservoir is of upper Pliocene age, about 200 ft thick, and consists principally of fine-grained, unconsolidated, somewhat shaly sand, with thin inter-bedded shale stringers throughout (Fig. 2). The reservoir is a broad, highly faulted, elongated anticline, with an areal extent of about 370 acres. Most of the faults bisecting the structure are normal, trend north-south, and are the main cause of reservoir discontinuity (Figs. 3 and 4). From 1964 to Dec., 1967, 259 steam stimulations were performed on a total of 125 Tar sand wells. Eighty-six new wells were drilled and steam stimulated. Of the total, 96 have been stimulated twice, 34 three times and 3 four times. During this same period, a two-injector steam drive pilot has been in progress. The response obtained from this project has been compared with the response to cyclic stimulation. This paper presents an analysis of the field observations for the two methods of thermal recovery. History of Development Drilling to the Tar pool commenced in 1924 with an initial well production of 40 to 50 B/D of 12o API gravity oil. Complete primary development of the pool has been spread over several years. Approxi- mately 40 wells were drilled during the first phase of development, which was completed in 1945. The subsequent primary development started in 1960 with initial well productions of 30 to 40 B/D oil. Thirty-seven wells were completed in the Tar pool during this phase. For the most part, slotted, gravel flow packed liners have been used in the wells in this pool. A cyclic steam stimulation pilot was initiated in March, 1964. Based on the very successful stimulation in the pilot area, the cyclic stimulation project was expanded to include all of the Tar pool wells producing at the end of 1965 (Fig. 5). Also, a development drilling program was begun at this time. To date, 86 new wells have been drilled under this program. The number of wells drilled each year in this secondary phase of development is also shown in Fig. 5. New Well Completion Practices Most of the new wells have been completed to produce from both the Upper and Lower Tar zones. Generally, a casing stub is cemented from the top of Lower Tar to the base of clean Upper Tar sands to exclude intermediate water-bearing sands. The water string is then cemented from the top of Upper Tar to about 1,500 ft with neat cement and 30 percent silica flour. The annulus from 1,500 ft to surface is then filled with a petroleum-based gel through a high-temperature port collar. In 1933, R. paris1 published a phase diagram for the entire Mg-Ca-Zn system. He reported the existence of a ternary intermetallic phase, Mg5Zn5Ca2, which formed a quasi-binary with the magnesium solid solution. Since then, no extensive work has been reported on the system. Recently however, indications of the existence of a second ternary in-termetallic phase in equilibrium with the magnesium solid solution led to a reinvestigation of the solid phase equilibria involving the magnesium solid solution. The 335°C (635°F) isothermal section was chosen for study. Metallography and powder X-ray diffraction were selected as the best mutually corroborating methods for determining the solid phase constitution. Seventy-six alloys were prepared from singly sublimed (99.95 pct) magnesium, electrolytic (99.95 pct) zinc and USP calcium. The analyses of some of the alloys are shown in Fig. 1. The alloys were melted in a graphite crucible under a chloride flu and chill cast in a split graphite mold. Dif-fusion couples (see Fig. 2) were prepared by casting molten Mg-20 wt pct Zn alloy around a cylinder of Mg-30 wt pct Ca alloy. The alloy samples and the diffusion couples were sealed under argon in Pyrex vials and annealed in a furnace capable of controlling within 1/2°C of 335°C. At the conclusion of the anneal, the alloy samples were quenched in ice water and the diffusion couples were air cooled. Procedures standard for magnesium alloys were used for metallographic examination. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns were taken on a G. E. camera with a 14.32 cm dim using nickel-filtered copper radiation. The redetermined 335°C (635°) section of the Mg-Ca-Zn phase diagram is shown in Fig. 1. Laboratory experiments simulating rock drilling were conducted on a number of commercial grades of tungsten carbide in order to determine their wear rates when they are used as inserts in percussive rock drill bits. The test rock was Barre granite and tests were made at conditions similar to those of the carbide buttons near the periphery of a large, down-hole, button bit. In addition, some wear rate measurements were made at a low blow energy. Wear rates of these carbide buttons were an extremely sensitive function of their cobalt contents and hardnesses and were proportional to e-°.57Hup to a hardness of about 91 RA. The point of minimum wear rate, which occurs at about 92 RA, corresponds to the point of maximum compressive strength. Modern percussive rock drill bits have inserts of cemented tungsten carbide on their wear faces. These inserts have drastically reduced bit wear in comparison to that of earlier all steel bits. The most common cemented carbide grade used in percussive rock drill bits contains about ten weight percent cobalt, although grades containing more or less cobalt are also used. Contrary to the case with carbide in metal-cutting tools, alloying materials are rarely used in mining grades. There are a number of designs of rock bits in current use. The most common form is an X bit which has four chisel-form radial wings. The button bit is another important design and one which has been recently developed. This design uses a flat steel face studded with relatively small hemispherically tipped carbide buttons. These types are illustrated in Fig. 1. Studies have been made of the sliding wear of cemented tungsten carbide on rock 1-4 and multiple-impact fracture&apos;, 5-6, b~t there has been comparatively little published on the percussive wear of this material although the wear of the impact face is the most important. There is some available data on the rate of dulling of rock bit inserts in actual drilling 7 but no laboratory studies. Sliding wear studies are useful for understanding the wear of coal and mineral cutting tools and gauge wear of percussive drill bits. but the

WHAT is a die-casting and what is the die-casting industry? From the literal translation of the words "die" and "casting"&apos; one concludes that a die-casting is a casting made in a die. The casting may be of any metal or alloy or, for that matter, may be of some nonmetallic material capable of being cast, such as plaster of paris or glass. The die may be of any material that will take successive casts so it need not necessarily be metallic in nature. The term "die-casting," therefore, is indeed broad, though in practical usage it has come to mean the casting of metals and their alloys in metallic molds or dies. Even this limitation of the term leaves -a broad field, for castings may be made in a number of different ways. For example, the molten metal may be allowed to run into the die by gravity it may be sucked into the cavity of the die, it may be forced to take the contour of the cavity in the die by centrifiugal force, or it may be forced into the cavity under hydrostatic pressure. DURING the past 20 years the advantages of reinforced concrete as a substitute for timbering in so-called permanent mine openings have been fully recognized, and its use has become almost general practice in the larger mines. The term "permanent mine openings" is used advisedly and is assumed to embrace such openings as ventilation shafts, material shafts and main hoisting shafts, with their adjacent stations, ore pockets, etc. In the concreting of such openings, the actual cost as compared with that of timbering has been of secondary consideration, the support of large openings, elimination of fire hazards, and prevention of inter-ruptions to production being the primary objectives. The ultimate economy, however, of lining such openings with concrete when they are to remain in use during the entire life of the mine, and especially when they are in bad ground, will seldom be questioned. During this 20-year period there have appeared in engineering publi-cations a number of interesting articles on the use of concrete in mines, nearly always describing some specific project of major proportions, such as the concreting of ore pockets, large stations or main hoisting shafts. Such articles are unquestionably of interest, since the projects require considerable engineering thought, not only in the method of excavating large openings, but in their engineering design as well. Concreting of main hoisting shafts, particularly when this is done with the least possible interruption to production, provides some interesting problems. The concreting of haulage drifts of the dimensions commonly found in mines, on the other hand, soon develops into a routine operation, there-fore it is with some hesitancy that the author attempts to prepare an article on this subject. The writer can recall only one article on the concreting of mine haulageways, although several articles have been written concerning the concreting of tunnels considerably larger in dimensions than those required in general mine practice.

Preheating Feature of Leyner Oil Furnace for Heating Drill Steel The No. 3 Leyner oil-burning furnace, used for heating drill steel, is now made with a preheating chamber. By this addition it is claimed that the heating capacity and, effeciency of the furnace are increased about 50 per cent. This preheater is a section which fits between the body and cover of the furnace of the old design. It may be attached to an old furnace by simply changing a few bolts. Referring to the illustration, it will be seen that the lower chamber is used for the final heating and the upper one for preheating. The type of burner now furnished with this furnace is suitable for either high- or low-pressure air. It hats merely to be throttled for high pressures and when this is done, it, is as efficient as burners designed especially for high pressures and eliminates the noise common to such burners. This furnace burns petroleum or any of its oils, such a, gasoline, kerosene, distillate, etc. Oil heating has many advantages. The steel cannot be injured by absorbing injurious elements such as sulphur, phosphorus or other impurities which :ire present in nearly all coals, nor from unequal heating since the flame imparts a uniform temperature; further, o lie steel is in full view of the operator at all times.

It is known 1,2 that the equilibrium between titanium metal, TiCl2 , and TiCl3, in a solvent of molten metal chlorides, is influenced both by the total amount of dissolved titanium and by the type of solvent. Assuming that the trivalent titanium forms the complex ion Ti111 Cl4, the equilibrium reaction may be expressed by the following equation, (Me) TiIII cl4+ 1/2 Ti = 3/2 TiII cl2+ (Me) Cl The ideal ionic equilibrium constant for this reaction is, Where the N&apos;s are the molar ionic fractions in the equilibrium melt, and (Me) the different types of cations present in the equilibrium mixture. The following thermodynamic relation is derived between Kand the concentration of cations in the equilibrium melt, mix The N"S are the equivalent ionic fractions, and so forth are constants corresponding to the standard changes in free energy for reactions in melts where only the cation indicated is present, and f (y1) is a function of the activity coefficients in the equilibrium mixture. When this term vanishes, a simplified linear relationship between In Kideal and the concentration is obtained. The simplified relationship has been applied with satisfactory results to the experimental data of Mellgren and pie,&apos; and Kreye and Kellogg.2 MANY existing methods for the production of light metals involve the reduction of their respective metal halides in the presence of salt melts composed of alkali or alkaline earth chlorides. In such a solution phase, the light-metal halide may undergo stepwise reduction from a higher, to a lower valence, and finally to a zero valent state. In this connection, the disproportionation equilibrium is of great interest. In the case where the higher valence is three and the lower valence is two, the disproportionation equilibrium may be written as follows, 3 Me11 = 2 Me111 + Me [I] If this equilibrium occurs in a salt melt containing a large excess of alkali chlorides, a typical ionic melt is obtained. Large deposits of manganiferous iron ores, representing several million tons of metallic manganese, occur in the United States. The Minnesota deposits of such ore are of outstanding importance because of their size, state of development, ease of mining and proximity to the Great Lakes, which permits water transportation to steel centers. In view of the fact that our steel industry requires large quantities of manganese, for which no satisfactory substitute has been found, and because our reserves of ferro-grade ore are comparatively small, the development of methods that will make our large deposits of manganiferous iron ores available as a source of ferromanganese is an important problem. Realizing the importance of this problem, some years ago the North Central Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the Minnesota School of Mines Experiment Station undertook jointly the development of methods for recovering the .manganese content of manganiferous iron ores in a form suitable for the production of ferromanganese, the 80 per cent. alloy indispensable in producing steel. Two types of manganiferous iron ores have been described in previous reports.&apos; The brown ores are higher in iron and lower in manganese than the black ores; the black ores are more siliceous but contain less phosphorus. The utilization of the iron content of the brown ores in the production of steel appears to furnish the best basis for their treatment. The method of attack has been to work out modifications in iron and steel practice so as to recover manganese in the form of slag comparable to ferro-grade ores. The greater part of the experimental work has been conducted with a 6-ton blast furnace and a 1/2-ton basic open hearth. I. INTRODUCTION. THE results of the cyanide-operations, given in detail in the following paper, show the progress that is being made at the Minas del Tajo. The old pan-amalgamation process, in operation up to and including 1905, while paying a profit on high-grade ores, was no longer able to treat profitably the ores in sight at that time, hence an alteration in the process was imperative. WISH to call the attention of the Institute to a curious subject, brought to my notice last summer by Mr. Begger, the accomplished metallurgist of the smelting-works of the Boston and Colorado Company at Black Hawk, near Central City, Colorado. At these works, the richest auriferous sulphhrets of Colorado (particularly copper pyrites) are smelted in reverberatories, together with roasted tailings (iron pyrites), and the gold and silver are concentrated into a new, artificial sulphide, or copper matte, containing $1500 and upwards of the precious metals per ton, and this is shipped to Swansea. I will say in passing, that this shipment of an unrefined product, like the similar shipments from Utah and Nevada to San Francisco, Chi¬cago, St. Louis, Newark, New York, and Europe, of crude argentiferous lead or "base bullion," is not a sign of incomplete metallurgy here, but has a sound business reason. The separation of the precious metals in the West would be more expensive, to begin with ; and then it would necessitate the movement of these metals by express, at high rates and risk, to commercial centres or coining mints, while the base metals having no home market, must be shipped and sold at little or no profit. At present, the gold and silver, safely packed, as it were, in the base metals, are transported with safety as ordinary freight; and the base metals probably more than pay cost of shipment and separation.
