On grinding in pure water, zirconium, tantalum, iron, and stainless-steel powders were extensively comminuted and simultaneously oxidized with hydrogen release, whereas nickel, copper, and silver powders did not react with water and their particle sizes increased. On grinding nickel, copper, and silver in water pressurized with oxygen, nickel and copper became extensively comminuted and were oxidized, whereas silver did not react with oxygen and its particle size increased. From these results and other considerations , it is hypothesized that for extensive comminution of ductile metals and alloys to occur on grinding they must react with the grinding media. UlTRAFINE metal and alloy powders are finding an ever-growing number of applications in metallurgy and in other fields.' Of particular interest are ultrafine metal and alloy powders suitable for dispersion strengthening.2'9 Various research programs on dispersion strengthening are being carried out and in some of these programs the ball-milling method is being used to produce dispersion-strengthened materials. This method usually involves the simultaneous grinding of metal or alloy and a dispersoid followed by consolidation of the resulting powder mixture. To obtain the ultrafine powders required for dispersion strengthening,' grinding is carried out in many liquids, including aqueous and nonaqueous media, with or without grinding aids.4'5 Nonaqueous liquids usually contain water as an impurity and some grinding aids may contain water of hydration.5 The water present may affect the grinding process. The writer has shown5 that. on ball milling chromium in water, the chromium is oxidized and hydrogen is released. It was surmised that the same reaction may occur on ball milling other metals and alloys in waterbearing liquids. Therefore, the investigation of ball milling in water was extended to metals and alloys other than chromium. In the course of the investigation, however, it became apparent that the data-to-gether with the results from a few additional experi-ments—could be used to postulate a comminution mechanism for ductile metals and alloys. A well-known comminution theory is that of smekal.7 According to this theory, comminution is possible because of the weakening effects of surface cracks and other imperfections in materials. This theory imposes a lower limit of about 1 µm for the ground particles. The beneficial effects of liquids and additives on the rate of grinding are well known.8 Mechanisms by which liquids and additives may aid in grinding were reviewed by Rose and Sullivan.' One aspect of these effects is based on Rehbinder's theory of crack propagation in materials under stress.9 According to Reh-binder's theory, liquids or additives may promote the spread of cracks in stressed materials by lowering the surface tension at the crack tip. Rose and Sullivan surmise that the same mechanism may be operative during grinding, thereby facilitating comminution of the particles. In addition, Rose and Sullivan reviewed how additives may act as dispersants as a result of their being adsorbed on the surface of the particles being ground. This concept has been suggested by Quatinetz, Schafer, and smea15 to explain from their experiments the major role of additives that enabled them to grind metal down to 0.1 µm. Discussions of other comminution theories and additional sources of material on the subject will be found in Ref. 10. None of these previous suggestions and theories, however, can account for all phenomena encountered during ball milling of metals to submicron size in this and in a previous investigation by the author.6 The objectives of this investigation were to determine the behavior of metal powders during ball milling either in pure water or in oxygenated water and to gain an insight into the grinding mechanism. Zirconium, tantalum, iron, nickel, copper, and silver powders were ball-milled in pure water. These metals were selected because their oxides cover a wide range of free energies of formation. For comparison purposes, an alloy-type 430 stainless steel-was also ball-milled in pure water. The pressure of the hydrogen released during ball milling was monitored in order to determine the oxygen that combined with the metal or alloy. In order to obtain more information on the nature of the grinding process, nickel, copper, and silver powders were also ball-milled in oxygenated water (water pressurized with oxygen). The oxygen that reacted with the powders was determined from the pressure decrease in the mills. The powders resulting from ball milling in pure water and in oxygenated water were subjected to surface area, optical microscopy, and X-ray diffraction analyses. With these data, the oxygen calculated to be combined with the metals during ball milling, and comparison of the free energies of formation of the oxides of the milled powders with that of water, a comminution mechanism was postulated. MATERIALS, EQUIPMENT, AND PROCEDURES The materials used in this investigation were powdered metals, deaerated distilled water, high-purity helium, and commercial grade (99.5 pct purity) oxygen. The powdered metals used were zirconium, tantalum, iron, nickel, copper, and silver. A 16 pct Cr, ferritic stainless steel, type 430, was also used. The purities (or nominal compositions) and the surface areas of these metals and the alloy are given in Table I.

DURING an investigation of high-strength manganese bronze by the Engineering Division of the Air Service, at McCook Field, Dayton, Ohio, particles of a "blue constituent" were noted in the microstructure of most of the bronzes examined. The constitution of the simple copper-zinc base alloy is still a matter of dispute in spite of the fact that the copper-zinc series is one of the oldest industrially important groups of alloys, and has received the early consideration of scientific research. The diagram, according to the most recent work,1 is shown in Fig. 1. The disputed questions involve the termination of the beta field and the line at 470° C. The earliest experimenter, Roberts-Austin, detected an arrest in some of his cooling curves at approximately this temperature and ascribed them to the formation of a eutectic; it has since been proved that there are no eutectics in this series. Shepherd2 was unable to detect any thermal arrests at this temperature; his diagram was essentially as shown in Fig. 1, except that the line at 470° C. was omitted and the beta phase carried down to normal temperatures. Later, Carpenter and Edwards,3 by a very painstaking research, definitely established the authenticity of the line but attributed it to the breakdown of the beta constituent into a eutectoid of alpha and gamma. Microscopic evidence of the formation of the eutectoid is doubtful and it seems more likely to be due to an allotropic change in the beta constituent as shown by Fig. 1. At least for practical purposes, it is more convenient to think of the structure of a 60-40 brass as a mixture of alpha and beta prime crystals rather than alpha plus an unresolvable eutectoid of "apparent beta" as it has often been called.

A graphic method has been devised for three-di-mensional analysis of hot deformation and for correlating the amount and directionality of the deformation with resulting directional properties. Deformation is evaluated in terms of dimensional change ratios referred to three orthogonal axes. Since all combinations of the three ratios can be represented in a triangular coordinate field with logarithmic scales, a two-dimensional chart of extent of deformation and degree of asymetry is possible. The entire gamut of shape changes from upsetting through flat-rolling to rod-rolling is accommodated. The resulting coordinate system is a base upon which can be represented the properties of the wrought products measured in the directions of the axes employed fir evaluating the deformation. When property data are available for many types and amounts of deformation, a three-dimensional figure can be constructed, and the projection of this figure is referred to as a ''3d'' chart. Experience in using such charts to plan fabricating operations for a variety of thick-section forged and rolled products of heat-treated aluminum alloys has verified its practical value for optimizing directionality relationships. MechANICAL anisotropy of thick section products of heat-treatable aluminum alloys is recognized by producers and users of these products, and the extent of the directional differences is apparent in property tabulations included in handbooks, standards, and specifications.' Attention has also been directed to the existence of important directional differences in the resistance of these products to stress-corrosion cracking. Metallurgical structure factors responsible for these directional differences include, among other possibilities, shape and alignment of grains, voids and nonmetallic inclusions (when present), volume fraction and spatial distribution of secondary phase particles and solid-state precipitates, crystal-lographic textures, and Bauschinger effect. The contributions of the individual factors vary with alloy composition, heat-treated temper, type of working process (forging, rolling, extrusion), and the amount and directional nature of the deformation. In general, the cast ingot used as the starting material for producing these wrought products exhibits only a modest degree of directionality. A monotonic and continuous transition from this nearly isotropic state with progressive hot deformation would appear probable, assuming that the working temperature is sufficiently high to cause continuous dynamic recovery. Several years ago a project was undertaken to evaluate the effects of hot deformation and metallurgical structures on the directionality of thick wrought aluminum alloy products, and the method to be described was developed as an analytical tool in this investigation. DIRECTION NOMENCLATURE The nomenclature system adopted by industry for the three mutually perpendicular directions employed in testing aluminum alloy products includes four terms: "longitudinal", "transverse", "long transverse", and "short transverse". These terms are conventionally related to the external geometry of the product but also by implication to the deformation and resulting metallurgical structure. Occasions arise in which through use of unusual fabricating methods, intentional or otherwise, the structure does not have the usual relationship to external geometry or may be very complex because of inhomogeneity of deformation throughout the piece. The longitudinal direction is generally parallel to the primary rolling direction or to the direction of extrusion. In the case of forging, it is parallel to the direction of maximum extension (not maximum "working" or "flow", as frequently stated). The term transverse is applied to any direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction in a product having symmetry about the longitudinal axis, and generally, although not always, the deformation to produce these forms is nearly symmetrical in the transverse plane. This term then may be applied to a round, square, hexagon, or other polygonal, symmetrical shape produced by extrusion or rolling or by forging, if produced by a simple, symmetrical drawing procedure. The objective of this paper is to present practical methods of applying radioactivity logs to problems of interest both to those engaged in evaluating fundamental reservoir data as well as to those engaged in subsurface structural work. The basic theories underlying the operation of radioactivity logging methods are briefly discussed along with some of the problems arising in the interpretation of the log. Relative methods of quantitative interpretation are described, with a discussion of relative reference lines and specific examples are given showing the application of these relative quantitative interpretation methods. To show the variation of the methods described, specimen wells penetrating formations widely divergent in point of geologic age were selected to demonstrate the application. A relative reference line is determined for the Neutron Curve and by comparison to known petrophysical data such as porosities from diamond cores, a direct quantitative relationship is developed. The application of this relative calibration curve to logs of unknown wells will permit a reasonably accurate determination of porosity in limestone and dolomite formations. Specific examples are given showing the application of these relative methods of interpretation to logs of the Smackover limestone in Louisiana, the Edwards limestone and dolomites of South Texas, and Permian dolomites of West Texas. Radioactivity logs have been used extensively by the petroleum industry for a number of years and recognition of their value has grown steadily, not only as tools to aid in the solution of specific stratigraphic problems, but also as potential sources of the basic data necessary for the estimation of net pay and reserves. The value of radioactivity logs for stratigraphic work has been pointed out in the literature,1,2,4,5,6 and now has long been recognized by the industry, but the quantitative application of the logs has advanced but little beyond the stage of a strong conviction that radioactivity logging curves will some day provide the information on such important quantities as the porosity and the liquid saturation of the formations. During the past few years the staffs of the Lane-Wells Company and Well Surveys, Incorporated, have devoted a great deal of time, thought, and experimentation to the relationships existing between radioactivity curves and the lithologic conditions encountered, and this paper is, in a manner of' speaking, intended as a progress report of this work and includes suggestions which the authors have found useful in the interpretation of radioactivity logs. The section on theory is not intended as a complete exposition of the physical processes involved, but rather as a brief introduction to the reader of these processes so that he may acquire a better understanding of the behavior of the radioactivity curves under the varied conditions encountered in normal well logging. Three relative methods for using neutron logs for the quantitative estimation of porosity in limestone or dolomite are presented. These methods are based on the comparison of logs and porosity data from wells in Louisiana, South Texas, West Texas, and New Mexico. These areas were selected because not only were there more core data available from these areas but also the majority of these data were from limestone or dolomitic zones. The correlation between core data and logs is simpler for limestones and dolomites than it is for sandstones due to the fact that sandstones are more complex than limestones and differ more widely among themselves as to composition of cementing materials, siltiness, etc. When data applicable to the various types of sandstones are available, the authors hope to present a discussion similar to this paper covering sandstones or possibly a more general discussion covering all types of reservoir rocks. The relative methods for estimating porosity which are presented in this paper fall short of the absolute method sought. However, these methods possess the advantage that they can be applied to almost any neutron log as long as the range of application is held within the limits imposed by the local lithologic conditions which prevailed during calibration, i.e., these methods are for short range application only. A RECONAISSANCE of the chrome and manganese'1ore deposits of Culm was made in the spring of 191s by Albert Burch representative of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the writer representing the U. S. Geological Survey. The object of the study was to obtain authentic information for use of the: United States Government as to the location, character, size, and availability of the Cuban deposits of the ores of these important steel-alloy metals. The Cuban Government courteously detailed Sr. E. I. Montoulieu, a mining engineer connected with the Treasury Department, to act as escort and associate throughout the work on the Island. Mr. George A. Wright, of Baracoa, Cuba, a mining engineer especially familiar with the chromite deposits of Oriente Province, was a member of the party from Feb. 25 to Mar. 20. It was possible to visit most of, the chrome-ore deposits that seemed to be of promise, but there was not sufficient time to visit all that were brought to our attention, some of which may have merit. Furthermore, no attempt was made to examine the extensive chromiferous iron-ore deposits of the Mayari, Moa, and Cubitas districts, as these deposits cannot be regarded as sources of chromium except indirectly. At the close of the field work the essential data concerning the quantity and quality of ore probably available for shipment during 1918 and 1919, in the event of the continuation of the European war, and of the tonnage of ore in reserve, were furnished to such Government bureaus as were interested, including the Shipping Board and the War Industries Board, and as soon as chemical analyses of the chrome ores could .be obtained, a press bulletin on the subject was published by the Geological Survey. In the present paper the engineering data, and tonnage estimates contained in the unpublished notes of Mr. Burch have been freely used, and their helpfulness is hereby gratefully acknowledged. Many thanks are due Senor Montoulieu and Mr. Wright for their valuable work in the field; to the officials of the Spanish American Iron Co. and of the various other companies; and to individuals holding chromite claims, for courteously facilitating the work of the party. E1 Teniente made blockcaving look easy. Ore rolling out the Teniente 5 level has the appearance of nicely screened riprap ready for road dressing. Actually it has been mostly size-reduced by nature abetted along the way by the occasional nudge of a double jack wielded by a buitrero (grizzly-man). It is the famous upside-down mine at Sewell, where the ore flow is down and the people flow is up. Sewell (rhymes with jewel) is the impossible cluster of dwellings clinging to a high Andean spur where 13,000 inhabitants find that staircases must substitute for sidewalks. There is no mining man who is not familiar with the picture of Sewell-by day a pyramid of barracks huddled on the high ground out of harm's way and by night a surprising Christmas tree against the mountain top. Until April 1967, Kennecott's Braden Copper Co. rocked along producing a not inconsequential amount of copper, 180,000 tpy (all tonnages cited here are short tons), attributable to its not unspectacular mountaineering and engineering achievements. These latter included expertness in building avalanche-control fencing; operation of a 35,000-tpd concentrator on the Sewell mountain spur; a spectacular aerial tramway to move 1600 tpd of concentrates to the smelter at Caletones, and occasionally to provision Sewell when snow blocks the road; a cliff hanger of a railroad 43 miles down to the rich bottom land at Rancagua; and last but not least, a 40-mile tailing launder that sweeps across deep valleys on trestles that rival those of the Romans.

During the seventeen years Fairchild has been making aerial surveys and aerial photographic equipment many changes and improvements have been made in the equipment and in the technique of using it. Aerial photographic operations have been developed from the crude methods and apparatus of wartime to a science upon which exact engineering calculations can be based. In the early days there was no airplane specially designed to meet aerial photographic requirements. One type of camera was used in all types of operations. Projects were made to conform to the products we could make and deliver. Obviously this entailed definite limitations. We now have airplanes designed specially for aerial photographic operations in accordance with the conditions encountered in actual service experience. We have cameras for every photographic purpose and our laboratory technique and equipment have been developed to the point where it is possible to make contour maps from vertical aerial photographs with contour intervals as close as five feet. Therefore, the selection of equipment now can be made in accordance with the time at our disposal, the justifiable cost, the scale desired, and the general requirements of the client. This does not mean, however, that arbitrary deliveries can be set for aerial photographic products. The factors in each project vary and each job must be considered in accordance with the factors involved. This accounts for the fact that products of aerial surveys may readily vary from $1.25 to $200 a square mile. Sherman M. Fairchild became interested in the design of a radically different aerial camera during the war. At its close he was about ready to demonstrate his design to the War Department. By 1920, he was able to bring out his first completed model. It had a number of radical features, one of which was the first dependable high-speed between-the-lens shutter, which makes for accuracy in aerial photographic work. Another feature was the use of metal throughout, eliminating the wooden parts that had been employed in wartime cameras. Another feature was the interchangeability of parts.

The effect of Group VIII transition-element additions on the sintering of tungsten powders is shown to be dependent on the phase relationships of the particular tungsten-Group VIII metal alloy system. The acceleration of sintering with nickel additions is diminished by alloying nickel with copper which is known to diminish both the tungsten solubility in nickel and the solid-vapor surface energy. In work previously published on the effects of additions of Ni, Pd, Pt, Rh, Ru, and Ir, which form solid solutions or intermediate phases of wide composition width with tungsten, sintering behavior is independent of element concentration beyond that concentration necessary to form a continuous layer on the surface of the tungsten powders employed. The sintering behavior of tungsten with additions of iron or cobalt, which form intermetallic compounds with tungsten, is highly dependent on addition-element concentration. Additions in excess of amounts necessary to form continuous layers lead to successively decreased sintering rates. The effects of certain Group VIII transition metals on the sintering rates of tungsten at temperatures below those at which a liquid phase would be predicted have recently been investigated by the present authors1-4 It was found that small additions of palladium, nickel, rhodium, platinum, and ruthenium accelerate the rate of tungsten sintering. Additions of iridium decelerated the rate of densification compared to that of pure tungsten in the same temperature range. In all cases the rate of densification changed with increasing amounts of these additions, up to those compositions at which a continuous layer was formed on the surfaces of the tungsten-powder particles. The rate of densification was then independent of further increases of the compositions of any of these addition elements. These observations were consistent with a sintering model in which the addition element formed an interface with tungsten in which tungsten dif-fusivity was either greater or less than its grain boundary self-diffusivity. M OST operators of open-pit mines in the Lake Superior iron ore district are quite familiar with the use of fuel oil in the heavy-duty Diesel engines commonly used in truck-haulage service but some operators, including my own company, Pickands Mather, have had butane-engine trucks in service for several years, and less is known of their operation. One of the first installations of trucks for iron-ore haulage was in 1939 at a deep open-pit mine on the Cuyuna Range. These superseded standard-gauge steam haulage. Trucks then obtainable were equipped with 150-hp Diesel engines, and the speed of these units on an 8 % grade would have been so slow, considering the depth of the pit, that plans for an all-truck haul out of the pit were rejected. The 1963 Jackling Award lecturer describes the founding of Banner Mining Co. and its trials and tribulations before becoming an established firm. Such aspects as geological description of Banner mining areas, history of exploration and production, areas of present interest to the company and research work conducted by the company are included. Several years ago a wealthy Chinese business friend of mine purchased an interest in a proposed oil well to be drilled a great distance from his home. A few months later it came in as a producer and proved to be a huge success and materially added to his resources. I asked him why a man of his wealth should be so lucky in a venture outside his sphere of knowledge when most people of modest means never seemed to get ahead. His answer was, "Fat Hoy takes a chance." Even though this was his answer, I knew from my association with him that there were other tempering considerations which Mr. Hoy applied before making up his mind to enter any transaction. First, he was a cautious individual. He was also a great believer in details and insisted on knowing everything possible about a situation, and finally, he was what we call a very solid individual with good basic instincts and judgment. This philosophy of Mr. Hoy may be applied to most any business but especially to those engaged in a search for natural resources such as mining where great risks are involved. This article concerns events in the history and growth of Banner Mining Co., with which I have been associated for 27 years in capacities from mine surveyor to vice president. Mr. Hoy's philosophy has played a significant role in the exploration projects of this company over the years, but what is more important, the officers, directors, and controlling interests in Banner have been aggressive in their search for ore reserves. THE BIRTH OF BANNER Banner Mining Company was incorporated in September 1935 by a group of Oklahoma and Texas oil men for the purpose of exploring and developing the Bonney-Manilla mines at Lordsburg, N.M. These properties had a history of intermittent production since the first ore discoveries as far back as 1870. Most of the production from the district has come from four mines, namely, the Eighty-Five, the Atwood, the Bonney-Manilla, and the Misers Chest. The last two are now owned by Banner Mining. The Eighty-Five mine operated between 1885 and 1931, and production totalled 1,494,287 tons averaging 0.11 oz of gold per ton, 1.23 oz of silver per ton, and 2.80% copper. The vein extended for a distance of about 3000 ft northeast and was mined to a depth of 1650 ft. The Atwood mine, adjoining the Eighty-Five mine, to date has been of lesser importance as a producer, but it has been operating for several years producing high silica flux ores for a smelter. Production totalled 352,828 tons up to January 1, 1962 From the Bonney-Manilla and Misers Chest mines, owned by Banner, production through 1961 totalled 2,006,343 tons with an average grade as mined of 0.0192 oz of gold per ton, 0.760 oz of silver per ton and 2.63% copper. Banner built a 150-tpd flotation mill in 1936 after almost a year of development on the 600 level of the Bonney mine. After less than one year's operation, it became apparent that the 150-tpd rate was not sufficient to make a reasonable profit due to the marginal grade ores. The low tenor of the ore, mainly chalco-pyrite in a highly siliceous gangue, made mandatory the close control of costs in order to make ends meet. A 300-tpd unit was added to the mill in 1937, and it is still the operating unit today. The clean sulfides presented no problems in milling. A metallurgist doing research on it at the time stated that the copper minerals seemed to have a built-in desire to float. Mill recovery of copper throughout the 27 years of operation has averaged 96.23%. A PERIOD OF FORCED GROWTH World War II brought many hardships to Banner. Labor and supply shortages caused drastic curtailment in development work. Rapidly rising costs far outdistanced any relief from pegged prices which we received from Government agencies. Finally, a branch of the Government asked us to stop all devel-

The conditions that govern the selection of a suitable type of detachable bit for the small, isolated mine, for rock work and tunnel contracting and for the large mine are quite dissimilar, therefore intelligent recommendation of a particular make of detachable bit must involve consideration of many factors. Small, isolated mines may find advantageous a detachable bit that a larger mine cannot afford to use, because of more efficient conventional steel sharpening and steel-distribution practice, but a small mine may not be able to adopt the practice of large mines because of necessary capital expenditures for equipment for detachable-bit sharpening and . shanking. The perfect detachable bit, suitable for all conditions, has not yet been developed. Conventional Drill Bit in Use That drilling speed increases as the bit gauge decreases is well known, but since small-hole drilling is the exception rather than the rule the rate of such increase is probably not so generally recognized. Tests carried out by Holman Brothers Limited1 with 7/8-in. steel show that when bit sizes are reduced from I½ in., I3/8 in., and I3/16 in-; to I3/8 in., I1/4 in.., and I1/8 in., respectively, the volume of the hole is I 5 per cent less and the drilling speed 49 per cent higher. Recent tests by the United States Bureau of Mines2,3 in hard, uniform basalt showed that a reduction in average gauge from 2.077 to I,826 in., a difference of o.25I in., gave an increased drilling speed of 65 per cent. The limits to which a drill hole may be extended depend upon the loss in gauge. Since the conventional bit with 5° and 14° clearances did not possess sufficient reaming edge to permit the smaller gauge changes that were required for small-hole drilling, experiments were made in bit construction with a view to correcting this deficiency. This resulted in the adoption of the full reaming cross bit (having full Carr charac1erist.i~~) by some mines4 In order to drill holes having a minimum taper from the collar to the bottom of the hole, full reaming center-hole cross bits with 90° cutting angles, 5° and 14° wing tapers, forged on 7/8-in. quarter-octagon drill rods, are used in the conventional drill-steel practice at Hollinger. In the steel shop close attention is given to the condition of the dies and dollies, which, combined with a rigid inspection of the finished bit, ensures as nearly a perfect bit as call be forged economically. Shop practices and costs have been discussed in earlier paper.5,6 The method by which the radii for the special dies used for forging bits of different gauge diameter are obtained so that the points and reaming edges cut circles of the same diameter has been discussed by Hibbert. The conditions that govern the selection of a suitable type of detachable bit for the small, isolated mine, for rock work and tunnel contracting and for the large mine are quite dissimilar, therefore intelligent recommendation of a particular make of detachable bit must involve consideration of many factors. Small, isolated mines may find advantageous a detachable bit that a larger mine cannot afford to use, because of more efficient conventional steel sharpening and steel-distribution practice, but a small mine may not be able to adopt the practice of large mines because of necessary capital expenditures for equipment for detachable-bit sharpening and . shanking. The perfect detachable bit, suitable for all conditions, has not yet been developed. Conventional Drill Bit in Use That drilling speed increases as the bit gauge decreases is well known, but since small-hole drilling is the exception rather than the rule the rate of such increase is probably not so generally recognized. Tests carried out by Holman Brothers Limited1 with 7/8-in. steel show that when bit sizes are reduced from I½ in., I3/8 in., and I3/16 in-; to I3/8 in., I1/4 in.., and I1/8 in., respectively, the volume of the hole is I 5 per cent less and the drilling speed 49 per cent higher. Recent tests by the United States Bureau of Mines2,3 in hard, uniform basalt showed that a reduction in average gauge from 2.077 to I,826 in., a difference of o.25I in., gave an increased drilling speed of 65 per cent. The limits to which a drill hole may be extended depend upon the loss in gauge. Since the conventional bit with 5° and 14° clearances did not possess sufficient reaming edge to permit the smaller gauge changes that were required for small-hole drilling, experiments were made in bit construction with a view to correcting this deficiency. This resulted in the adoption of the full reaming cross bit (having full Carr charac1erist.i~~) by some mines4 In order to drill holes having a minimum taper from the collar to the bottom of the hole, full reaming center-hole cross bits with 90° cutting angles, 5° and 14° wing tapers, forged on 7/8-in. quarter-octagon drill rods, are used in the conventional drill-steel practice at Hollinger. In the steel shop close attention is given to the condition of the dies and dollies, which, combined with a rigid inspection of the finished bit, ensures as nearly a perfect bit as call be forged economically. Shop practices and costs have been discussed in earlier paper.5,6 The method by which the radii for the special dies used for forging bits of different gauge diameter are obtained so that the points and reaming edges cut circles of the same diameter has been discussed by Hibbert. IN recent papers on interface energies in metals¹,² the concept of an equilibrium of forces has been used in the measurement of interfacial tensions. Mathematically the equilibrium of three forces is given by the relations: where the 2's are the interfacial tensions (interface energies per unit area of interface) of three phases or grains meeting at angles 21 22 and 23 (212 relates to the 1-2 boundary formed by grains 1 and 2;223 to the 2-3 boundary, etc.). If these relationships are valid, one can calculate relative values of the interface energies from measured boundary angles on specimens which have been brought to equilibrium. Since Eq 1 may be derived through a mathematical process of minimizing the grain boundary energy under the restriction that the ?'s be independent of boundary orientation: the concepts of surface tensions and equilibrium of forces are not particularly essential. To deal with the general case involving dependence of boundary energy on boundary orientation, it becomes desirable to drop certain concepts formerly held (namely that energy per unit area is identical with force per unit length or surface tension) and to use the energy concept alone. It is appropriate, therefore, to use E in place of ? in deriving and using the more general equations that express the anisotropic nature of the grain boundary energy. Herring3# ' recently has derived the required general equations using the principle of minimization of energy. Specifying the boundary orientations in terms of angles (4) measured with reference to crystal axes within the grains, Herring's equations take the form E23 + E21 cos?8 + E12 cos?2 — sin ?12 + sin?2-?E12/?12 =O [2] where the partial derivatives are measured in the direction of counterclockwise rotation of the boundaries. Eq 2 implies that an infinitesimal displacement of the triple point along the 2-3 boundary produces no change in the boundary energy. Similar equations apply for infinitesimal displacements along each of the other two boundaries. It is apparent that Eq 3 reduces to Eq 1 when the c's vanish. Eq 3 also reduces to Eq 1 when the E'S are all equal. Shockley and Read' have pointed out one limitation to these equations. When E plotted versus 4 appears as an energy cusp, as their theory requires, for example, for the energy near a twin boundary position, then Eq 3 (and therefore Eq 1 also) no longer applies if one boundary is in the minimum energy position. One of the equations of form Eq 2, however, applies if the infinitesimal displacement is along the boundary associated with the energy cusp. From the foregoing treatment it will be apparent that equilibrium angles alone are not sufficient in general for calculating relative interface energies.

Much crude oil, as produced from the well, carries varying amounts of water, which may be present as free water in globules sufficiently large to settle out, in time, if the fluid is allowed to stand, or as an emulsion formed by myriads of minute water particles, each surrounded and entrapped by a film of oil through which it cannot break under the action of gravity alone. Such an emulsified mixture of oil and water is commonly termed "cut oil." When such an emulsion is subjected, under proper conditions, to the influence of a high-potential alternating-current field, the minute water particles rupture the enveloping oil films and coalesce into larger water droplets this procedure continuing until all the water is freed into drops of such size that they readily settle out. This action has been photographed by the micro-moving-picture camera; under the microscope, the breaking-up of the emulsion, as described, is seen to be accomplished in a few seconds. The low power requirements of the process, from records of commercial plants, substantiate the theory that the action is that of a multitude of electrical condensers in series, rather than that of a number of conducting paths. The minute water particles serve as the metallic elements, or plates, of the condensers and the separating oil acts as the dielectric. Such surface charges as the particles may have are removed, and the intervening oil is broken, probably electrically by the voltage and mechanically by the attractive force between adjacent oppositely electrified particles. The principle of breaking up an emulsion under the influence of an alternating electric field was discovered by F. G. Cottrell and Buckner Speed, through experiments conducted, at the University of California, which resulted in a plant being installed on the property of the Lucile Oil Co. in the Coalinga field, California, early in 1909. This plant was able to reduce 14-per cent. emulsion to less than Pper cent. with commercial success. MANY engineers currently are working harder than usual, in part because of the demands being made upon them for increased production in the war effort, and in part because engineers are in short supply so that there is more to do for those who are available. In some instances the question has come up as to what additional payment, if any, should properly be made for overtime work, and to what extent is such payment legally permitted under the rules of the Salary Stabilization Board. Most engineers employed in an executive, administrative, or outside salesman capacity are not paid for overtime. They are paid for doing a job instead of for the hours they put in, and are free to do all the unpaid home work they feel they should do after dinner, as well as to do a bit of thinking and worrying during wakeful hours in bed. But engineers employed in a strictly professional capacity normally have standard office hours. Some employers pay for overtime and some don't. Their practice as it existed on Jan. 25, 1951 may be continued. In the absence of such practice at that time, the Salary Stabilization Board says that the engineer may now receive additional compensation up to his straight-time rate for an extended work week. No formal approval of the Board is required. "A professional engineer," in the mind of the Board, "is a person employed in a professional capacity, who, by reason of his special knowledge of the mathematical and physical sciences and the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design, acquired by professional education and practical experience, is qualified to practice engineering." Inducted Engineers A letter from a young man just inducted into the service and fearful that his engineering training is not going to be utilized reached us last week from Fort Riley, Kan. The AIME, cooperating with the other Founder Societies, is doing what it can, through the Engineering Manpower Commission, to see that engineers are not being wasted in the military establishment. So we passed this young man's letter along to T. A. Marshall Jr., executive secretary of that Commission. Mr. Marshall tells us that the normal procedure now being followed by the Army in handling Selective Service inductees is to have them first complete 16 weeks of basic training before assignment to specialized categories. During that time they are classified. If one has an engineering degree he should be classified as scientific and engineering personnel at the end of the basic training period. He should then be transferred to a technical detachment and assigned an MOS (Military Occupational Specialties) reflecting his education. If a young man is looking for a commission, it might be added that the current policy in the Army is to transfer to OCS (Officer Candidate School) applicants for commissions in the infantry only. The local unit commander can give information on this point, based upon the aptitude shown in tests. In view of the current shortage of engineers, it is believed that a young man should seriously consider remaining in enlisted status unless he can obtain a commission in a branch of the service that can make full use of his technical skills. His work may thus be more to his liking even if his uniform is not. New York or Atlantic City? In which place is it preferable to hold the annual meeting of a professional society like the AIME-New York or Atlantic City? That is, a winter meeting. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers has held its recent meetings at Atlantic City, with increasing attendance and satisfaction. The American Institute of Chemical Engineers chose Atlantic City for its recent December annual meeting. Only twice has the AIME ever met in this famous seashore resort: in 1898 and 1904. Chief advantages of going to Atlantic City over New York are that technical sessions are better attended, there being little else to do there in Winter; the cost to members is less, and hotel facilities are better adapted to a large meeting. As to cost, take a banquet, for instance. The Chalfonte-Haddon Hall, which caters especially to winter conventions, charges about $7 for a banquet dinner of standard quality. A similar dinner at the Statler in New York would cost about $8.50, and about $10.50 at the Waldorf-Astoria. (The charge for tickets is somewhat greater than this because of the cost of music, programs, flowers, and other incidentals.) Rooms, too, are somewhat less at Atlantic City, two in a room being accommodated for about $7 per day each, compared with $7 to $10 at a headquarters hotel in New York. On the other hand, AIME headquarters is put to some extra expense for staff travel, food and lodging, and members living in New York and environs are forced to pay a hotel bill. New York, of course, has more varied amusements to offer, plenty of big stores, and the glamour of a big city. The choice may be discussed at the forthcoming meeting in New York. In the meantime if any reader cares to express an opinion one way or the other we shall be glad to hear it. College Scholarships Most parents of children in the later stages of high school find it necessary to give some consideration to the cost of a college education. Although salaries have increased substantially it seems that the cost of the necessities of life, such as food, housing, and maintaining the family automobile, have gone up even more, so the problem of financing the children's education is as acute as ever. Many overlook the possibility of scholarships, or feel that only a student at or near the top of his class has a chance to get one. As a matter of fact, close to 150,000 scholarships and more than 15,000 fellowships, worth some $42,000,000, are available in 1200 American colleges and universities. Those who are interested should send 55¢ to the Superintendent of Documents, Government Printing Office, Washington 25, D. C. for a 248-page publication just issued by the U. S. Office of Education, entitled "Scholarships and Fellowships Available at Institutions of Higher Education."

BRASS rod for use in automatic screw machines is one of the major products of the brass mills. A large tonnage is consumed each year in the manufacture of an endless variety of finished articles and parts for assembly into other products. The machines that do this work have been developed to a high degree of efficiency, and their manufacturers are still striving for higher production speeds. This development has brought with it a demand for brass rod to meet the increasingly difficult machining conditions. This paper is a report of the results of tests undertaken in an effort to obtain a measure of the effects of such variables as lead content, microstructure and cold work on the machinability of brass rod. It is realized that the term "machinability" has never been well defined. Power, finish and tool life all should have a place in such a. definition. In practice it is sometimes found necessary to sacrifice some of these in order to obtain a rod that will not tend to throw up a burr, or will give a burr which is easily tumbled off. Again a specially stiff rod may be necessary because of long overhang from the chuck or a rod of special characteristics is needed to take a given broaching operation without chattering. It is only through an understanding of the effect of basic mill operations on the machinability of the rod that such problems as these may be solved most economically. It is hoped that this paper, together with the discussion it may evoke, will prove to be a basis for such an understanding.

Injection of gas to increase oil recovery has been considered for almost all important discoveries during the past ten or fifteen years. However, the number of gas injection projects having sufficient history and data is too limited to permit valid generalities of effectiveness of gas injection. Management and engineers are faced with a difficult problem of selecting those reservoirs which are susceptible to profitable application of gas injection. Injection of gas to maintain high pressure favors some factors affecting reservoir performance such as viscosity, surface tension, and formation volume factor of oil by keeping gas in solution and favors some operating features such as extending flowing life of wells and storing part of the produced gas for future use or sales. Injection of gas at low pressure involves lower compression ratio, or at least a single gas-gathering system, larger displacement volume in the reservoir per unit of gas handled, and permits effective utilization of the naturally existing energy and agent for oil displacement that is gas dissolved in oil. Each program is thus a compromise to meet optimum economic conditions while striving to attain maximum recovery of this important nautral resource. The statement has often been made that pressure maintenance would greatly increase oil recovery by permitting abandonment of formation oil inflated with gas in solution rather than abandonment of the same liquid volume of tank oil, if the same terminal oil saturation could be attained. Simple calculations indicate increases in oil recov- ery as high as one hundred per cent on this basis for high formation volume factor oil encountered in current deep drilling. Electrical prospecting is the art of exploring the structure of the subsoil in regard to conductivity variations and interpreting the results of such exploration as to their geological meaning. Electrical prospecting has been applied during the last few years with outstanding success, not only to prospecting1 for ore but also to structural studies.2 Both applications have proved helpful to the geologist, and the latter application especially promises to become of still greater importance in the future. The mapping of structures is the most important function of the oil geologist. Oil is lighter than water, therefore in water-bearing beds it will migrate upward until the migration is stopped by a bed impermeable to the oil. Geologic structures such as domes, anticlines, faults and terraces, offer good prospects in the search for oil accumulations and can be traced easily by electrical prospecting, provided they are composed of a series of sedimentary layers of which at least one possesses fair electrical conductivity and follows the general trend of the structure. Conditions for Successful Mapping The first condition, fair electrical conductivity, is met in almost any oil-bearing series, because generally the electrical resistance of a sedimentary bed is identical with the resistance of the more or less saline waters, filling partly or entirely the pores of the rocks.3 Briefly, the electrical resistivity of a bed can be expressed for all practical purposes by the product R X P, where R is the specific resistance of the waters in the rock pores and P a factor depending upon the percentage of water by volume in the rock.
