Vanadium slag production in the shaking ladles started in April 1968, steelmaking was begun in July 1968 and the first continuously cast blocks were produced soon after on the 29th July, 1968. Nominal monthly production of over 20 000 tons was reached in seven months and by December 1970 about 12 000 heats were cast and a monthly production of 35000 tons has been achieved.

After the introduction of mechanized bord-and-pillar development at Dumacol in 1958, pillars were being developed at a much faster rate than they could be extracted by hand loading methods. Efforts were therefore made to increase the rate of pillar extraction by mechanization. Following two partially successful mechanized stooping trials in 1964 and 1971, it was decided that mechanized pillar extraction with 1 m3 cable-reel front-end loaders should be introduced. The first section to employ the new equipment started production in May 1979, and the mine now has four mechanized pillarextraction sections in operation. Considerable improvements in production, productivity, safety, and percentage extraction have been achieved.

Frank Michael Gowar Egerton was educated at Jeppe High School for Boys and the University of the Witwatersrand, both in Johannesburg. He holds a B.Sc. degree in mining engineering, and has attended numerous courses on management, finance, and industrial relations. In the Executive Development Programme run by the University's Business School in 1981, he was voted the student who had made the greatest contribution to the programme.

Mostert This publication records the proceedings of a con¬ference convened to deal exclusively with prospecting in areas of desert terrain. The meeting, organized jointly by The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy (London) and the Ministry of Energy and Mines, Morocco, was held in Rabat from 14th to 17th April, 1985, and generated considerable international interest. Exploration cam¬paigns and case studies of successful discoveries in the desert areas of more than 14 lands are described. Since large areas of South Africa, Botswana, and Namibia are characterized by and and semi-arid terrains, this publication should be of considerable interest to explorationists and mining engineers engaged in the search for and development of mineral deposits in southern Africa. The fact that the desert terrains of southern Africa are host to a number of important base-metal (Aggeneys, Gamsberg, Prieska, and O'Okiep) and diamond deposits (Orapa, Jwaneng) has ensured continued interest in these areas from the viewpoints of exploration and mining.

Improvements in the drilling and blasting techniques used in the stopes of narrow reefs have caused the clearing of broken rock to become the major cause of delay in the achievement of a regular cyclic operation. This paper discusses the development of a scoop in accordance with a predetermined set of performance parameters. The test results obtained to date have shown that the basic objectives have been achieved within tolerable limits of variation.

The analysis of angular atypicality of lineaments as an aid to mineral exploration by J. P. G. PRETORI USc, M.Sc. (Pret.) (Visitor) and T. C. PARTRIDGE, Ph.D. (Natal) (Visitor) In an exploration project, data pertaining to 84000 lineaments in an area of 25 000 km2 were recorded. The total length of lineaments in intervals of one degree was determined. Angular intervals with Iow length densities were regarded as atypical. The proportion (by length) of lineaments with such atypical orientation was calculated for 5 km X 5 km grid squares. This index of angular atypicality was contoured and, used in conjunction with conventional photogeological techniques, contributed in a large measure to the success of the investigation.

Owing to the strategic value of organic solvents, an investigation was conducted on the reduction of solvent losses at the Buffelsfontein solvent-extraction plant. It was established that the major cause of the high solvent losses was the high content of suspended solids in the uranium pregnant solution. To improve the clarification of the pregnant solution, it was decided to replace the conventional sand clarifiers that were being used at that stage. After pilot-plant tests had been conducted, a circulatorclarifier 16 m in diameter was installed to treat 9000 m3 per day of pregnant solution containing approximately 500p.p.m. of suspended solids. The clarifier was commissioned successfully, and yielded an overflow containing approximately 80 p.p.m. of suspended solids compared to the previous value of 250 p.p.m. This reduction in suspended solids immediately resulted in a decreasing trend In losses of organic solvent, finally yielding a reduction in these losses of approximately 50 per cent.

It has a capacity of 5 ft3t and was named the No. 20. Next in line was the No. 24. Built in 1933, it had twice the capacity of the No. 20 unit. Then, in 1934 and 1939 came the No. 36 (22,5 ft3) and No. 48 (40 ft3) respectively.

An International Ferro-alloys Congress, arranged by the Ferro Alloy Producers' Association of South Africa, the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and the National Institute for Metallurgy, will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, in April 1974. The technical programme, occupying five days, will cover the following topics in relation to all ferro-alloys: 1. Burden preparation, blending, pelletization, handling, reducing agents. 2. Electric smelting furnaces-design, operation, management,- smelting optimization, shop practice, refractories. 3. Mineralogy, reduction behaviour, smelting reactions, slags. 4. Automation, Pollution control. 5. Applications, trends in comsumption, trends in composition specifications. There will be no parallel sessions. Papers in the above topics are invited; review papers will also be welcome. Proposed titles and abstracts in not more than 200 words should be submitted before the 30th of November, 1972, to The Chairman, Programme Committee, INFACON 74, Private Bag 7, AUCKLAND PARK, South Africa. The abstracts will be considered during January 1973, and papers accepted for the Congress must be submitted in final form before the 31st of July, 1973. The proceedings of the Congress will be published as a special volume. There will be a series of post-Congress tours to ferroalloy plants and other places of both technical and scenic interest. The design and operation of a double- V compartment vertical-flow settler by B. N. SOUTAR, B.Sc. (Mech. Eng.) Wits. (Visitor) This paper describes the development of a vertical-flow settler for underground pumping installations in the mines of Gold Fields of South Africa Ltd. The recommended settler employs the principle of 'dynamic filtration': the solids that are in suspension in mine water are filtered through a stable horizontal bed of flocculated particles, a technique that was established in about 1958.

A retrospective study was conducted on the Rand Mutual Assurance (RMA) noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) compensation claims from 1998 to 2008 to determine if the 2008 milestone agreed at the 2003 Mine Health and Safety Summit was achieved. The number and costs of NIHL compensation claims in different commodity sectors and workplaces were collated. A secondary analysis of the ages of employees compensated after 2008 was conducted. A complementary retrospective analysis of audiogram data investigated the percentage loss of hearing (PLH) shift in different homogeneously exposed groups and occupations at two gold mines. The compensation claims analysis indicated a significant decrease in NIHL claims from 1998 to 2008, but the milestone was not achieved. The reason may be either that claims have not been submitted timeously as required by Instruction 171 and that the current submissions are a result of pre-2003 noise exposure, or that employees who were baselined are still developing NIHL owing to ineffective hearing conservation programmes in place in the mining industry. On the basis of best practice for hearing conservation, recommendations are made for leading indicators in hearing conservation programmes and for reducing the risks of NIHL in order to achieve the 2013 milestone.

The Third International Conference on Coal Research was held in Sydney, Australia, in October 1976. The papers and proceedings of the Conference will be published in Australia on behalf of the International Committee for Coal Research in April 1977. The papers deal with the economics and practicability of coal conversion, coal winning, resources assessment, safety and dust, and coal and power generation, together with an appreciation of coal potential by the deputy chairman of the U.K. National Coal Board. This paper describes the results obtained from a rock-engineering monitoring programme carried out at West Driefontein gold mine, where dewatered and classified tailings have been used as backfils for local and regional support. The in situ behaviour of these backfils and the surounding rockmass were determined, and it was found that the backfil used on this mine has provided significant regional support. The underground observations also showed less rockburst damage in backfiled panels than in unfiled panels, provided the backfil had been placed properly in the stopes.

The South African socio-economic history started with pastoral and agrarian communities which had low levels of industrialization and small needs for energy. The discovery of diamonds (in the Northern Cape in 1867) and of gold (in the Transvaal in 1886) heralded economic and industrial development, with a concomitant demand for energy. The energy needs of the fledgling mines, and mining towns, were met by the combustion of wood, cut locally, or by coal, hauled laboriously from the primitive collieries, and sold to the mining companies and townships at high prices.

In 1994, Nkana smelter commissioned a Multimillion US$ Dollar Chilean Teniente converter (CT) in its operations in order to improve its smelting technological base. The main objective was to reduce the overall smelting energy costs and increase the sulfur capture for sulphuric acid production to support the company?s leaching operations at Nchanga Tailings Leach Plant. A decade of CT operations have since ensured following its installation and startup. This paper provides a Technical and Operational Audit of the performance of the CT in the first 10 years of its operations at Nkana smelter.

At the Annual General Meeting of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa, held in Johannesburg on 29th June, 1982, the following leading members of the mining industry were elected to office for the 1982-1983 term: Mr W. W. Malan President Mr C. T. Fenton Vice-President Mr G. Y. Nisbet Vice President William Wouter Malan was born in Springs on 7th November, 1928, and was educated at the Springs High School and the University of the Witwatersrand, where he obtained a B.8c degree in mining engineering. Diamond Mines. Mr Nisbet became a consulting engineer of the Anglo American Corporation in 1972, and a deputy managing director of the Gold Division in 1974. George Young Kisbet was born in Benoni in 1923 and was educated at Pretoria Boys High and the University of the Witwatersrand.
