The paper describes the design options available for the simultaneous production of liquid sulphur dioxide, via cryogenic condensation, and sulphuric acid in a sulphur-burning sulphuric acid plant. The impact of the operating conditions of the cryogenic condensation on plant capital and operating costs are discussed, with the main focus on the optimization of the most important economic and operative drivers of the non-ferrous mining industry, such as energy efficiency, reliability, and availability. A case history relevant to an integrated sulphurburning plant producing liquid sulphur dioxide and sulphuric acid, recently started up in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is described. For the Gold Fields Foundation National Engineering Awards, each university affiliated to the South African Federation of University Engineering Students (S.A.F.U.E.S.) selected a candidate who, in their opinion, presented the most outstanding design project in their final year during 1984. Microwave technology has for decades been a tool for astronomers to map and understand the complexities of the universe its composition and extent. It is also used on a laboratory scale by spectroscopists to examine properties of atomic and molecular compounds. In this novel work we will introduce microwave technology to be used for the investigation of liquid slag structures. The preliminary results indicate that the alteration of the slag composition could be correlated to the measured microwave refractive index. "Low-cost calcium lignosulphonate (CL), which is a byproduct of the wood pulping industry, was investigated as a potential binder during laboratoryscale pelletization of inertinite-rich high-ash coal fines from the Highveld Coalfield of South Africa. Coal-binder mixtures containing between 1 and 15% calcium lignosulphonate were prepared, pressed, and ultimate, proximate, porosity, XRD, and XRF analyses obtained. It was found that increased pressure during pelletization results in increased attractive forces, due to increased interparticle contact areas. FTIR analysis showed that chemical interactions occur between coal fines and the binder, as evidenced by the formation of new C-O ether-type bonds. The presence of moisture during pelletization enhanced surfactant activity of the binder. Chemical interactions between the coal and the binder seem to be mainly electrostatic, driven by Ca2+ from the calcium lignosulphonate, which may act as a bridge between the anionic parts of the binder and the surface of the coal. IntroductionCoal has over the years remained South Africa’s major energy source, with over 90% of the country’s electricity being produced via coal-fired processes (Arndt et al., 2016). Sasol’s coal conversion technology alone provides more than 40% of South Africa’s liquid fuel requirements (van Dyk, Keyser, and Coertzen, 2006). The production of high-grade coal requires the processing of run-of-mine (ROM) resources by a combination of processes which include crushing, screening, and washing (Radloff, Kirsten, and Anderson, 2003). These processes result in the generation of coal fines (< 0.5 mm) which, until recently, have been discarded into slimes dams (le Roux, Campbell, and Smit, 2012). Several issues are associated with slimes dams, among which are the costs of transportation of these fines from the place of origin to the discard point (often a considerable distance), and the potential environmental effects due to seepage of toxic materials into surrounding ecosystems (Clausen, 1973).Consequently, utilization of these coal fines is an area of great interest. Mechanical densification of fine coal by means of pelletization and/or briquetting to larger sizes for use in technologies that require lump coal, such as chain-grate stokers and fixed-bed gasifiers, has been shown not only to reduce environmental risks (Mangena et al., 2004), but also to significantly reduce storage and transportation costs (Mani et al., 2001). Pelletization is the process by which solid particles are consolidated into uniform, usually hard, impact-resistant agglomerates, rendering them useful as a fuel with sufficient calorific value for domestic and industrial utilization (Finney, Sharifi, and Swithenbank, 2009)."

"The Anglo American Platinum Rustenburg Base Metals Refiners (RBMR) is the largest producer of nickel cathode in South Africa. It treats slow-cooled matte to recover a platinum group metal-containing magnetic fraction for downstream processing and a nonmagnetic fraction to produce nickel and copper cathode, cobalt sulphate, and sodium sulphate. The refinery was recently expanded from 21 to 33 kt/a nickel. During the ramp-up phase, the sulphur removal section was found to be a constraint to throughput. Nickel hydroxide is precipitated from nickel spent electrolyte by addition of sodium hydroxide, and filtration of the nickel precipitate allows sulphur to be removed from the circuit as aqueous sodium sulphate in the filtrate. The filtration fluxes were found to be limiting the circuit’s capacity. An obvious solution would have been to install additional filtration capacity at significant capital cost and long lead times. RBMR chose rather to first initiate a collaborative project with Anglo American Technical Solutions to better understand the impact of process conditions on filtration characteristics and to evaluate whether the filtration flux could be increased by improving the quality of the nickel precipitate.A deeper understanding of nickel hydroxide precipitation chemistry and kinetics in the context of high nickel and sodium hydroxide concentrations was developed, guided by precipitation theory and confirmed by laboratory tests and plant observations. It was found that the filtration rate could be significantly improved by modifying the precipitate characteristics. A new precipitation process was engineered and retrofitted into the existing plant. Since start-up of the new precipitation system, the available capacity of the sulphur removal section has more than doubled, and control of the process has improved with the better agitation. This paper describes the theory and results used to design the new agitation system, as well as the impact of the change on capital investment, operability, and process efficiency."

A description is given of the design of the continuous ion-exchange demonstration plant at Blyvooruitzicht Gold Mine, including details of the process design, the column construction, and the control system. The operating and process results gathered over a period of seventeen months are summarized, and development work and modifications to the process are discussed. It is concluded that the system comprising continuous loading and continuous elution is technically feasible and can be scaled up with confidence.

The ?Poisson effect? is defined and characterized. It takes place even when the material to sample is not liberated. Gy, Pitard, Ingamells, and others, including the author, recommend that a minimum average number of particles of mineral of interest characterize the recommended sample size. How many? Recommended numbers range from 6 to 40 particles depending on authors, corresponding to standard deviations of 41% to 16%. Some guidelines are proposed, and the often alleged ?double-Poisson? effect is examined.

Dr H. J. van Eck (Honorary Life Member): "Mr President, I regard it as a signal honour that I was invited to address the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy on its 75th Anniversary. I also wish to add my congratulations and good wishes to the many you have already received on this memorable occasion. Seventy-five years is indeed a good age and the achievements of your Institute certainly justify this special celebration. South Africa owes her present prosperity largely to the technological ability and determination of her own people. Members of the Institute contributed in large measure to this great development of our country and through the years have upheld their high reputation for scientific integrity, dynamic enterprise and dedicated service. It was their knowledge which provided the key to unlocking the mineral wealth which lay dormant for countless ages. The history of world mining dates back many centuries. We know of the mercury mines of Spain, the tin mines of Cornwall and the zinc mines of Poland, but it was not until colonization of the western hemisphere started in about 1500 that mining of any consequence began in North America. It is true that the peoples of South America and Mexico had accumulated wealth out of gold and silver, but industrialized mining was not a feature of these agrarian cultures. The mining wealth that eventually developed in North America was based on advances in the technology of processing minerals and served as an incentive to people in other new countries. Big mines were opened elsewhere in the world. From Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Rhodesia, Australia, Burma and India, to name but a few, there has been a steadily increasing production of an expanding range of minerals and metals. By the middle of the 20th century the trend was to increase the production and use of such comparatively uncommon metals as cobalt, nickel, titanium, and others, and a great mining rush started to search for, and develop, the deposits of uranium, and related radio-active minerals. It is worth pausing a few minutes to reflect that most of early mining was based on the recovery of virgin metals like gold and silver or easily treated high grade ores of copper, tin and zinc. Today, much of this type of mining would be regarded as picking the eyes out of the mine. With the development of improved ore separating, ore concentration and recovery processes, we developed into bulk mining and bulk treatment and in South Africa we have some very big mines, also outside the gold mining industry at Phalaborwa, for instance. Mining techniques are applied which compare with the best in the world. These large mines could only develop because of the perfection of new concentrating techniques and, of course, because of the development of markets. We have mentioned nickel and cobalt. These names were given to those mischievous mining sprites called nickels and kobolds to whom the suspicious miners ascribed their inability to smelt copper from copper nickel or arsenious copper ores. In South Africa, the presence of minerals was known to the modern Western world as far back as 1497 when Vasco da Gama found the native &apos;strandlopers&apos; at the St. Helena Bay wearing copper rings. In 1669, after the British East India Company had formed their settlement, they employed miners and assayers in prospecting for minerals and in 1685 found traces of copper in the copper mountain of Namaqualand where some 170 years later a rich deposit of copper was to be opened up. This paper discusses pilot and laboratory-scale metallurgical test work conducted on bulk samples from a low grade heavy mineral deposit and provides an overview of basic practical metallurgical techniques applied to ascertain the suitability of existing production plants to process material from this orebody. Previous investigations have shown this specific orebody to be more challenging in terms of mineral beneficiation as it has a high gangue mineral content. Test work was conducted on targeted stratigraphic units based on lithology and assay results to enable identification of the stratigraphic units portraying quality issues. Unit specific metallurgical pilot work has never been conducted on any of the RBM orebodies and is a new field currently being explored. During this investigation focus was placed on potential quality and yield issues for ilmenite product, with particular reference to CaO quality. A basic evaluation of zircon and rutile separability was also conducted. The test work was conducted using a comparative baseline methodology with metallurgical test work methods specifically aiming at mimicking the existing production plant as closely as possible. This enabled not only the likely metallurgical performance to be assessed but also indicated whether current plant design would be suitable to process the low grade ore types into products of acceptable quality at acceptable yields. The methods and findings discussed in this paper indicate that although there is considerable variation between different units, a blended feed can be successfully processed. With unit specific metallurgical data applied to the existing geological block model, expected yields and recoveries using current plant designs could be predicted.

To have been invited to deliver this second CMMI lecture is an honour that I deeply appreciate. But, when I contrast my qualifications for delivering it, with those of Sir Alistair Framet, who delivered the inaugural lecturet in the series, or with those of other members of the Council, I feel rather an imposter. Far from having been a miner al my life, I have been associated with the mining industry on a part-time basis for a mere eight years. However, I encourage myself with two recollections. The first is the admission of the great Sherlock Holmes that he was often guided to the truth by the erroneous opinions expressed to him by Dr Watson. I may be able to perform a similar service for you. Secondly, I recall that, when I was a member of the Diplomatic Service, I was quite often asked to address representative gatherings of such professional people as the police, architects, dress designers, teachers, doctors, funeral directors, bird fanciers, and so on. Since it would have been pointless to pretend that I was expert in any of their businesses, I used to resort to the technique of announcing as my theme&apos; A diplomat looks at the police&apos; or whatever profession it was. They fortunately took it as a compliment that their profession was apparently one that diplomats spent a lot of time brooding over. They could also afford to laugh of any criticism that I might make because it could be ascribed to ignorance rather than informed malice. I hope that you will do the same.

The paper briefly outlines the history of the successful development of vegetating techniques for mine-residue deposits. It seeks to place on record the major roles played by M.J. Mrost, who initiated and systematically developed the concept, and W.H. Cook, who continued the trials and successfully directed a stupendous large-scale project. The vegetating techniques currently practised are outlined, and it is concluded that vegetating is still the only surface-stabilizing technique of any significance that is employed throughout the world.

Preg-robbing activity of the carbonaceous matter negatively impacts the process of precious metals recovery from gold-bearing ores and concentrates. In this paper, ore heap leaching (HL) using a blinding agent which inhibits ‘preg-robbing’ is a promising method. A carbonaceous ‘preg-robbing’ gold ore with head gold grade of 1.92 g/t from a Russian deposit was studied. Corg was 1.12%. In accordance with the Irgiredmet technique, preg-robbing activity was 65.3%. Surfactant reagent DN was used as the blinding agent. Column tests on the ore HL were conducted using two options. They were: a conventional flow sheet (Column 1) and a flow sheet with the reagent addition (Column 2). Gold recovery in Column 1 was 55.39% while gold recovery in Column 2 was 68.48%. Occurrences of hazardous events (explosions of methane or coal dust, fires, outbursts) have been investigated and presented as a flow of events in time. It has been shown that flows of hazardous events in a long time span are homogeneous, stationary and no-after effect flows and can be considered as stationary Poisson flows. A flow of CH4/coal dust explosions that had happened for the last 27 years in Ukraine was analyzed. The explosions have been statistically processed. Practicability of agreement of statistical and theoretical data on mathematical expectation and mean square deviation of time interval between explosion and the explosion intensity has been stated. Probability of an emergency event in time is expressed through an exponential function, while mathematical expectation of an accident and mean square deviation of time interval between successive explosions are in inverse proportion to the accident intensity. Accident probability for practical purposes can be determined as a product of accident intensity by calculated time interval.

Since 1964, Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines, Ltd., has been developing and using production scheduling methods for optimizing its metallurgical operations in the short term (up to one year). Medium-range metallurgical planning has been possible only by successive evaluations of a single-year LP. A modified version of Rosenbrock&apos;s direct search technique has now been developed to allow multi-year optimization of both mining and metallurgy for medium-range planning. The modifications to the search technique have produced a marked increase in computational efficiency for this heavily constrained problem in many variables and the system is a usable planning tool, given a reasonably powerful computer. The plans are &apos;optimum&apos; in the sense that they yield the maximum present value of the operations. Each of the resulting five-yearly mine plans forms the basis for further detailed metallurgical evaluation by the established production scheduling system.

This paper discusses the possible use of petrological data and proximate analyses in the prediction of cutting forces for coal. It is restricted to the development of univariate predictors based on data from thirteen collieries in five major Transvaal and Orange Free State coalfields and three coal provinces. The aim of the work was the identification and development of the best predictors of mean peak cutting force and Hardgrove grindability index from among the independent variables evaluated. The data, which were obtained by use of the penetrometer developed by the Chamber of Mines Research Organization, were processed according to the SPSS computer package. The analysis revealed reasonable correlations between the Hardgrove grindability index and (1) the volatiles and vitrinite content in the Vereeniging-Sasolburg and South Rand Coalfields, (2) the contents of vitrinite, vitrinite plus exinite, and minerals plus inertinite in the Eastern Transvaal Coalfield.

"The sizing, designing, and costing of copper electrowinning circuits requires an in-depth understanding of the fundamental relationships between circuit parameters and the practical operation requirements. The aim of this investigation was to optimize total copper electrowinning project cost by mapping the operating limits of key mechanical equipment. The model was compiled by mapping various cellhouse layouts in terms of number of cathodes per cell, crane productivity, stripping machine productivity, and rectifier–transformer (rectiformer) sizing using data tables for sensitivity analysis. These parameters were then collated and evaluated on a cost by size basis. The model provides an optimum band of operation for cellhouse productivity and project capital cost for a typical range of production throughputs, from 10 kt/a to 200 kt/a cathode copper. The information may be used as a high-level selection guide to assist with identifying a costeffective copper electrowinning circuit design for a specific production rate. The data was validated and compared with existing copper electrowinning cellhouses around the world that typically install no more than 84 cathodes per cell. IntroductionThe sizing, designing, and costing of copper electrowinning (EW) circuits require an indepth understanding of the fundamental parameters as well as the practical requirements to optimize cellhouse productivity and capital cost. Although a significant amount of work has been done designing new copper electrowinning circuits, an in-depth evaluation of world operating data reveals that the number of cathodes per cell, which affects cellhouse layout and productivity, is not consistent for a specific production rate (Anderson et al., 2009; Robinson et al., 2003, 2013). Based on this premise, Kafumbila (2017) suggested that there are unanswered questions, such as ‘why are the numbers of cathodes per cell different for copper production rates of 20 kt/a and 40 kt/a?’In this paper, data tables are employed to map the operating limits and costs of key Cu EW equipment. Three groups of unacclimatized men were subjected to five-day climatic-room procedures at wet-bulb temperatures of 29,30, and 31 C respectively. The findings indicated that individuals reach a satisfactory level of heat acclimatization for work in environmental temperature conforming to those at which they were acclimatized. It is, therefore, superfluous to acclimatize men at wet-bulb temperatures that exceed those at which they are destined to work. These methods of acclimatization can be linked advantageously to heat-tolerance testing at mines with suitable underground temperatures.
