Occupational illnesses and diseases tend to be chronic and are generally characterized by temporary or permanent physical dysfunction. With the exception of some symptoms, they are not generally visible. Therefore, safety overrides health in mining because occupational ailments take years to develop and management observes less physical trauma, if they witness anything at all. Occupational health issues need to be addressed systematically, encompassing all aspects of the interaction of employees within the work environment. Risk assessment is central to the management of occupational health. This should not be seen as a complex process and may involve little more than simply considering the consequences of one?s actions before starting work. Competent risk assessment provides the starting point and defines the scope of further action. The objectives and final use of an occupational health risk assessment determine the process and the method by which it is carried out. The occupational health risk assessment is therefore a systematic procedure to identify potential health hazards, evaluate the extent of exposure subjectively and/or objectively, and to establish the need for, and effectiveness of existing control measures. Furthermore, it facilitates the drafting of occupational exposure monitoring, medical surveillance and occupational health education programmes. Various models for conducting occupational health risk assessment provide step-by-step guidance for the identification and assessment of significant occupational health hazards and assist in producing suitable and significant occupational health risk assessments. The paper gives an overview of an occupational health risk assessment model based on the basic principles of occupational health and the legislative requirements, which will simplify the occupational health risk assessment process and ensure a sound base for the development of all other occupational health systems.

A relatively simple rate equation for the kinetics of the absorption of gold from cyanide solutions onto activated carbon was lI5ed as the basis in the development of a model for multistage carbon-in-pulp and carbon-in-Ieach absorption circuits. The model was used in the prediction of both the steady-state and the transient behaviour of the absorption process, and the results were found to be in reasonable agreement with those observed in an extended pilot-plant campaign. A number of practical implications of the model are discussed, and an assessment is made of the economic consequences of the various process options available for the design of a carbon-in-pulp plant.

In the chloride process for Ti02 pigment production, various titania feedstocks (i.e. rutile, synthetic rutile, slag, and upgraded titania slag (UGS)) are chlorinated in a fluidized bed reactor with petroleum coke at temperatures between 1000°C and 1100°C to yield gaseous metal chlorides. Although feedstock preference is largely based on Ti02 content, feedstock physical properties (i.e. density, sphericity, size distribution, and porosity) differ; these differences will affect fluidization behaviour and can inadvertently affect conversion efficiency. For example, a high carryover from the reactor reduces particle residence time and decreases conversion rates. Owing to dwindling rutile reserves in the world, most chloride producers are forced to feed blends of feedstocks to their chlori¬nators; and so it becomes important to understand whether blends have an effect on the hydrodynamic properties of the bed. This paper describes the physical characterization of different feeds and the determination of the elutriation constants for slag, rutile, synthetic rutile, and a blend (i.e. 50 wt% rutile, 50 wt% slag). A common feature of the tests was that particles finer than 75 Km tended more than any other size to be elutriated. The tested rutile, classified as a Geldart Group B material, had the lowest carryover, whereas the slags had the highest. Interestingly, the elutriation constant (ki) of the blend is lower than those of either of its individual components.

A fuel cell is an electrochemical engine that converts the chemical energy of a fuel, such as hydrogen, and an oxidant, such as oxygen, directly into electricity. The emerging fuel cell industry may represent a major opportunity for the global platinum mining industry. This is because low temperature fuel cell systems use platinum group metals as catalysts. Fuel cell vehicles may become the most important driver of future platinum demand within years of their commercialization. A great number of factors impact on and drive the diffusion of fuel cell vehicle innovation. Such drivers range from energy security to environmental concerns and the technological development of fuel cells and systems. Such factors and drivers of fuel cell vehicle diffusion are combined with the generic ?body of knowledge? on ?technology forecasting? and ?diffusion of innovation? to design a framework that provides a holistic approach to the analysis of this complex enterprise. An attempt is made in this paper to address the following questions: Which types of fuel cells require platinum group metals? Which types of fuel cells will achieve dominant design status? Will fuel cell vehicles diffuse successfully? How big will the impact of successful fuel cell vehicle diffusion be on future platinum demand? How well do fuel cell vehicles compete with incumbent technologies such as spark-ignited and compression-ignited internal combustion engine-driven vehicles? How soon will oil depletion start to drive the diffusion of fuel cell vehicles? How important is hydrogen as a fuel? What impact does the inadequate hydrogen fuelling infrastructure have on fuel cell vehicle diffusion? The paper contains some initial results of a research project that has the aim of producing a schedule of future platinum demand generated from fuel cell vehicles. The susceptibility of experimental low-nickel Cr-Mn-N stainless steels to hot cracking, sensitization, and pitting corrosion in the as-welded condition was investigated. These steels were developed for deep-drawing applications and are similar in composition to type 201 stainless steel. In order to obtain good formability, the rapid rate of work-hardening (characteristic of the 200-series steels) was decreased by the addition of copper. The behaviour of two sets of alloys during fusion welding was investigated: 17Cr-7Mn-4Ni-o.5Cu steels containing 0.001 to 0.27 per cent nitrogen, and 17Cr-7Mn-2Ni-o.1N steels with copper contents varying between 0.01 and 3.11 per cent. Al the steels in these two sets initially solidify as d-ferrite, which transforms partially to austenite during cooling. As the nitrogen level increases, the microstructure of an autogenous-weld metal ranges from large amounts of d -ferrite, martensite, and Widmanstätten austenite, to austenitic structures with small amounts of vermicular d -ferrite. The formation of d -ferrite during solidification and the presence of ferrite retained in the weld metal indicate that the experimental alloys will not be susceptible to hot cracking during welding. Except for the alloy with 0.27 per cent nitrogen, the resistance to pitting corrosion of the experimental steels in the as-welded condition is inferior to that of type 304 stainless steel. None of the experimental steels is susceptible to intergranular attack in the as welded condition. The alloys with 0.19 and 0.27 per cent nitrogen have properties (corrosion and microstructure) similar to those of type 304 stainless steel in the as-welded condition.

Models of cone crushers and vibrating screens are described. These models have been constructed from actual plant data using a systematic model-building technique. Included in this technique is regression analysis using multi-dimensional spline functions. The models have been used too simulate complete crushing plants and hence to design and evaluate a control system for crushing plants.

In recent years, the quality of iron ores has decreased due to the increase in the content of impurities, namely quartz, aluminum, phosphorus, and sulfur. It indicates that the removal of impurities from iron ore is an extremely challenging task. In particular, the high amount of phosphorus in iron ore could be a problem for energy consumption and CO2 emission in the steelmaking process. To reduce the impact of phosphorus, mainly two approaches: the utilisation of low-phosphorus iron ore, or dephosphorisation of high-phosphorus iron ore using mineral processing technology, have been suggested. In this paper, the removal of phosphorus from a low-grade high-phosphorus iron ore containing 0.1 mass% P and 57.5% Fe by alkaline roasting and wet grinding is discussed. The iron ore consists mainly of hematite, goethite, and quartz. Effects of sodium hydroxide concentration used as an alkaline source, roasting temperature, grinding time, and particle size on the dephosphorisation of highphosphorus iron ore were investigated. The dephosphorisation efficiency, iron loss, and mineralogical components of low-grade high-phosphorus iron ore under various experimental conditions were characterised by using XRD, SEM-EDS, and particle size distribution analysis. Results showed that the phosphorus content was lowered from 0.1 mass% to 0.034 mass%, while the iron grade reached 59.8 mass% from 57.5 mass% by alkaline roasting with 0.05 w/w NaOH at 300 °C for 2 h, followed by wet grinding in an attritor with water for 30 seconds at room temperature. Under the experimental conditions, the dephosphorisation rate was about 54.7%, and the solution obtained by wet grinding contained 22.7 mg/L of phosphorus and 21.5 mg/L of iron. This. paper indicates how the South African Iron and Steel Industrial Corporation Limited (Iscor), as a major consumer of raw materials, determines the tonnage and quality of essential raw materials required to satisfy an increasing demand for steel and how this led to the establishment of a coal mine with a highly sophisticated beneficiation plant in the Waterberg coalfield, near Ellisras in the Transvaal. The planning of the project, with specific reference to the limited reserves of metallurgical coal in South Africa, the quality and quantity of the coal to be produced, and the way in which the project was managed is discussed briefly.

It is generally accepted that alkalis attack and degrade the carbon fraction of coke in a blast furnace. Because South African cokes contain relatively high amounts of ash, the influence of alkalis on the ash fraction was investigated, the carbon and ash fractions being separated and studied separately. Potassium engenders the formation of liquid, with a resultant expansion of volume and a decrease in the strength of the coke ash. However, the ash did not play a significant part in the degradation of the coke, and it was found that the catalytic effect of potassium on the Boudouard reaction was the overriding factor in the coke-degradation process.

"Szaibelyite–suanite type ore is rich in magnesium oxide and boron oxide. We propose a new method to extract both metallic magnesium and valuable residues rich in boron by reduction using metallic aluminium.Thermodynamic analysis of the reactions between aluminum and MgO, Mg2B2O5, and Mg3B2O6 was carried out. The effects of CaF2 addition, temperature, mass of Al, and pellet formation pressure on the extraction of magnesium were also investigated experimentally.The results indicate that the magnesium oxide phase can be displaced from 2MgO-B2O3 and 3MgO·B2O3 by CaO in the reduction system. The reduction ratio of magnesium oxide was 38% without calcium fluoride addition, increasing to 94% with 5.1% calcium fluoride. The reduction ratio increased with increasing temperature and mass of Al. To obtain a higher reduction ratio, the reduction pellet should be formed under a reasonable pressure.IntroductionBoron and its compounds are widely used in textiles, borosilicate glass, metallurgy, fertilizers, and nuclear shielding. Boron resources are mainly found in Turkey, the USA, Russia, and China. In Liaoning, China, there are abundant szaibelyite–suanite type ores that are rich in magnesium oxide and boron oxide. Szaibelyite and suanite ores are used to produce borax by a carbon dioxide– soda process. Annually, 2 Mt of waste materials containing 3–20% B2O3 and 2–25% MgO are produced during the process. It is necessary to make use of these waste materials containing high concentrations of boron oxide and magnesium oxide to avoid environmental problems as well as for economic reasons (Ozdemir and K1pcak, 2007)"

For years urethane screen surfaces have been used in a wide range of wet screening applications where openings as fine as 75 microns and coarser have been used. In dry screening operations these same urethane screen surfaces have been relegated to only the coarser separation ranging from 1.0 mm and larger. The purpose of this paper is to expose the reader to new developments in both screen surface and screening equipment technologies, which allow an end user to consider urethane screen surfaces for dry screening operations where separations as fine as 75 microns are required. These technologies allow an end user to realize the inherent advantages of urethane in wear resistance while also realizing the benefits that a high open area urethane screen surface can bring. These benefits include non-blinding characteristics and feed capacities, which rival that of traditional stainless-steel woven wire mesh screen surfaces. The paper will highlight the features of this patented urethane screen surface technology and the screening machines in conjunction with which they are used. There will also be a presentation of several case studies of commercial installations where these technologies are utilized. These case studies are from the mineral sands industry; therefore relevance to the conference is direct and not inferred. Included in the paper will also be constraints, which must be taken into account when considering urethane screen surfaces such as temperature and chemical attack. This paper will expose potential end users to a possibility of using screens to achieve extremely accurate size separations in applications where screens were previously not considered. The paper will explain and demonstrate that prior concerns of screen surface blinding, high screen surface consumption rates and large screen surface area requirements can be eliminated by proper utilization of high open area urethane screen surfaces.

The Australian Institute of Geoscientists (AIG) held their fifth successive annual seminar at Observation City, Scarborough, in Perth on 15th November, 1990. The title of the seminar was 'Strategies for Grade Control'. The Seminar attracted 158 delegates, including 10 speakers. In addition to geoscientists, the attendees included mining engineers, metallurgists, and mining analysts. The welcoming address was given by Rob Duncan, Chairman of the Westem Australian Branch of AIG, who said there is a strong demand for this type of seminar in Western Australia (WA). It helps geoscientists to keep up with former colleagues and to keep abreast of technical developments.

The modelling, simulation, and design of processes for the recovery of gold from solution by absorption on carbon require the combination of a suitable rate expression with a description of the flow conflguration of the system. By the use of a suitable rate expression from the literature, methods are presented for the design of multi-stage countercurrent absorption systems corresponding to the commonly used carbon-in-pulp and carbon-in-column contacting systems. The sensitivity of the recovery to various design parameters is illustrated. These results have important implications in the choice and design of equipment.

With the increased variability of today's large-scale mining operations, consistent flotation performance is important to improving and sustaining overall recovery through the circuit. The Newcrest Telfer Mine has implemented advanced process control technology to obtain stable level operation and consistent mass pull in the copper rougher and scavenger flotation circuits. The final result has been an overall reduction in variability, which impacts on both copper and gold recovery. This paper describes the methodology and implementation of the improvements in control at the Newcrest Telfer Mine as being an essential part of the business for minerals processing.

Measurements of the rates of penetration at various throttle air pressures are presented as a function of thrust for three different rockdrills when drilling quartzites with strengths of 45 000 lb/in2 and 39 000 lb/in2, The rate of penetration at optimum thrust is shown to agree well with the predictions of theory and curves of air consumption as a function of throttle air pressure are presented. Man-held machines are shown to be under-thrusted at throttle air pressures above 40 lb/in2g. Measurements of bit wear as a function of distance drilled are presented graphically and discussed in terms of the theory developed in Part 1.
