Day-to-day operations on the Broken Hill mine of the Black Mountain Mineral Development (BMMD) Company require a detailed knowledge of the distribution of the ore minerals within the orebody. The data are acquired by systematic underground diamond drilling of the orebody and subsequent geological and analytical borehole logging. These data are then captured onto a database, available for further analysis. Before mining commences in a mining block, copper, lead, zinc, silver and bismuth assay values, and the specific gravity of each sample, are extracted from the database. 3-dimensional variogram and kriging calculations are performed for each geological zone; for all the metals of interest. A computer representation of the mining block in the form of an ore model is then built using these kriged data. From these ore models information is extracted as required by the Geology Department on the mine, and used in numerous operations. These include: daily grade control to supply optimum feed grades to the treatment plant; the compilation of short, medium and long term production schedules; orebody outline definitions for the detailed planning of mining operations; ore resource calculations. The system has been modified and updated since its inception and provides timely information in a production environment.

The advent of relatively cheap computing power has precipitated a rapid growth of computer usage in the mining industry. In order to obtain most benefit from this development a need is recognised for the future mining graduate to be trained in computer literacy. This paper outlines the type of training required and describes progress to date with such a programme at the University of the Witwatersrand. Certain challenges concerning the teaching effort are discussed.

In the survey "Analysis of South African raw bullion" the distribution of trace elements within the bullion have been shown to be distinctively dependent on the extraction process. In general the amalgamation process produces the more impure bullion with respect to trace elements. Some chemical and physical explanations are given for the differences that have been observed in the raw bullion as received at the Rand Refinery. The value of the spark source mass spectrographic technique in the study of the elemental impurities in bullion is demonstrated.

Overexposure to noise remains a widespread, serious health hazard in the US mining and other industries despite 25 years of regulation. Most categories of illnesses and injuries associated with mining have improved, with the exception of hearing loss. The drilling of rock in a confined work environment contributes to high levels of noise exposure in mining. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to reduce the noise exposures of jackleg drill operators and to prevent additional cases of noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) by developing and evaluating low-cost retrofit noise controls for equipment. This report describes the procedure for the measurement and reporting of noise from portable pneumatic tools such as jackleg drills. The technique used in this research allows for the determination of the source A-weighted sound power levels and the radiation patterns in octave and 1/3 octave bands. Overall sound power level is also determined. This paper also reports the results obtained by using this procedure to evaluate a SECO S215 standard production drill and a CSIR Miningtek prototype rock drill incorporating engineering noise control measures. It was found that by using the manufacture?s recommended operating pressure of 496 kPa (72 psi) that the CSIR prototype?s sound power was 10 dB(A) less then that of the SECO S215.

The use of fill in deep-level gold mining presents the possibility of achieving considerable economic and operational benefits if conventional support can be eliminated. Unfortunately, the combination of the properties of tailings from gold reduction plants and the narrow, flat, tabular reefs being exploited make conventional hydraulic filling very unpractical. Laboratory tests indicate that, with careful control of water content, these tailings can provide an adequate fill material. A variety of bonding agents have been investigated, and the most practical seems to be ordinary Portland cement. Even at very low cement contents some cohesion is achieved. The design and layout for a complete fill support system using hydraulic transport, dewatering, and pneumatic placement are discussed, and a surface field trial indicated that the principles involved are correct and that acceptable results can be achieved. This system and material would completely eliminate conventional timber and brick support, and a preliminary economic analysis indicates that filling is cost competitive on a direct replacement basis. All the operations for a full-scale operation are available or have been developed to a stage sufficient to indicate that the system is practical, although certain operations require further refinement.

(Rand), Ph.D. (Sheffield) Energy is the life blood of the modern technological era in which we live and it was, I think, Benjamin Franklin who said that the manipulation of energy was the basis of all science and technology. This is perhaps an oversimplification, but there can be little doubt that our life today, and the improved standard of living we aspire to, are governed almost entirely by our ability to generate and manipulate energy. This ability has made it possible for Man - each specimen a feeble twentieth of a horsepower - to travel to the moon, to recover valuable minerals from the depths of the earth, to do arithmetic at unbelievable speed, to lessen the drudgery of manual labour. For these and virtually every aspect of our life we are dependent on energy from external sources. It is, therefore, not surprising that the per capita consumption of energy, and more particularly electricity, has become one of the most reliable criteria by which to measure the standard of living and technological advancement of a country.

Anglo Platinum is in the process of introducing a number of initiatives, varied in nature, on a scale that will impact operations in the short, medium and long-term. The advent of mechanization on a large scale and the introduction of new mining technologies therefore require a different approach to the design of ventilation and cooling systems. In addition, the ventilation and cooling systems serving increasingly deeper operations will place a greater demand on electrical power consumption?this in an environment where power generation is limited and increasingly expensive. Ventilation and cooling systems currently being employed in platinum operations have evolved from practices first pioneered in deep level gold mines. However, in modern and future platinum mines, deepening of operations will take place in a somewhat different environment?particularly in terms of geothermal settings and electrical power utilization. This provides the opportunities to devise novel and energy-efficient ventilation and cooling strategies tailor-made to meet these challenges. The need for refrigeration and cooling at depth will increase the capital and operational cost component of ventilation systems and the medium-term limitations on the availability of electrical power will require the provision of innovative systems. The increased use of diesel-powered vehicles underground, the viability of energy recovery and feasibility of thermal storage opportunities are discussed in this paper. Some of the challenges and the solutions currently proposed in terms of ventilation system design, refrigeration plant selection and chilled water distribution methodologies are described. Changes in strategies core to this discipline that affect the health and safety of employees and the profitability of modern operations are deemed necessary to support the transformations that are envisaged.

This note describes an investigation into the most cost-effective material for mil-shell liners in large-diameter pebble mils with lifter bars. This is part of a project being conducted at the gold plant of East Driefontein near Carletonvile in the Transvaal. It was found that manganese-steel and chromium-steel liners are more cost-effective than liners of cast mild steel or white iron.

SYNOPSIS Certain disadvantages associated with the use of Anfex have been raised on previous occasions. This interim investigation shows that by loading at lower pressures the sensitivity to initiation of Anfex can be improved. Associated with this is a reduction in velocity of detonation and charge density which should lead to more desirable fragmentation. The effect of lower loading pressure on other factors is also considered. INTRODUCTION Discussion at the Symposium on the use of Anfex in Underground Mining, conducted by the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy during May 1968 showed that there was considerable uncertainty and diversity of opinion on the characteristics of Anfex and its method of application. Some of the disadvantages associated with the use of Anfex were: Inadequate sensitivity to initiation; Excessive fragmentation of the rock and damage to the hanging and footwalls; Wastage as a result of blow-back; Poor water resistance. As a result of this, further investigations on the properties of Anfex have been carried out and, although these have not reached finality, it is considered that a progress review may be of interest and assistance to the mining industry. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE The work was carried out on a laboratory-scale where, for test purposes, the explosive was loaded into 1 in. (nominal) internal diameter steel pipes unless otherwise stated. Charging was conducted with a 1 in. (nominal) Schutte-Koerting eductor having a 0.2 in. internal diameter venturi nozzle, the Anfex being fed into the eductor from a conical hopper fitted directly above it. A 5 ft long copper loading tube with outside and internal diameters of 3/4 in. and 5/8 in., respectively, was fitted to the discharge end of the eductor. The remote end of the loading tube was inserted into the test pipe so that it was about 6 to 8 in. from the closed end of the pipe. The loading apparatus was withdrawn as the pipe filled, maintaining approximately the same stand-off distance throughout the operation. REVIEW Sensitivity to initiation Sensitivity of Anfex to initiation was found to deteriorate when the dynamic pressure of the air to the eductor was increased. The Kupol mill facility processed a high grade free milling gold/silver ore containing 28.2 g/t Au, 324.8 g/t Ag and approximately 0.5% pyrite during 2008 operation. Gold predominantly occurs a selectrum in the ore and silver is predominantly present in the forms of acanthite, stephanite, pyrargyrite and proustite. Mill start-up was in mid-May 2008 and the mill reached the design throughput of 3 000 tpd in October. The ore was ground to approximately 70%?53 microns. A Knelson Concentrator recovered 9.8% gold and 0.5% silver. The gravity tails reported to a cyanidation circuit that has 14 hours pretreatment and 116 hours leaching. The slurry from cyanidation was then processed by counter current decantation (CCD) thickening to wash and separate the leach residue from the pregnant leach solution. Precious metals are recovered fromthe pregnant solution using the Merrill-Crowe process. The washed CCD leach residue slurry is treated with calcium hypochlorite to destroy cyanide and then sent to the tailings impoundment. Leaching is performed with a new technology called ?CELP? (CANMET Enhanced Leach Process). The Kupol mill overall gold and silver recoveries for 2008 were 95.4% and 85.6% respectively, which were 2.8% and 7.5% higher than targets. Gold and silver extractions in the leach circuit were 94.2% and 84.5% respectively. Leach profiles indicated that gold extraction reached a plateau in the 4th tank while minor silver dissolution occurred in the 5th tank. With the CCD circuit included, total gold and silver extractions increased to 95.4% and 86.6%, respectively. Optimization of the leaching strategy made it possible to reduce sodium cyanide concentration to as low as 410 ppm without compromising precious metals extractions. Silver was effectively leached from the refractory silver minerals because CELP produced more oxidized mineral surface relative to the conventional cyanidation leached mineral surfaces. The average cyanide consumption for 2008 was 1.3 kg/t. The new leaching technology proved to be very robust and performed efficiently even with changes in feed grade and ore mineralogy. Laboratory experiments produced results that were indicative of plant performance. The robustness of the technology and the laboratory test work contributed to the success of the Kupol mill start-up.

The Hillendale mine (situated between Richards Bay and Empangeni) and Mineral Separation Plant were approved in 2000. The smelter, just outside Empangeni, consists of two 36 MW DC arc furnaces that were commissioned in 2003. Experiences gained during the initial commissioning of the furnaces proved valuable in later commissioning work, as shown by the increase in ramp-up rates. The capacity of the plant is 250 kt/a TiO2 slag and 145 kt/a of pig iron.

"Carboxymethyl cellulose is an organic binder used in the iron ore pelletizing industry. The basic principles of how carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) solutions behave during the pelletizing process and how these principles affect the drop and compression strengths of the pellets are poorly understood. The aim of the investigation was therefore to gain knowledge on the behaviour of CMC during the pelletizing of haematite concentrate.Haematite pellets with different additions of CMC (0.1–0.4 wt%), were subjected to drop tests, compression tests, and free moisture content analysis. The relationship between the drop strength, compression strength, free moisture content, elapsed time, and CMC concentration was analysed.The drop strength had a strong correlation with the free moisture content of the haematite pellets, with a correlation coefficient of 0.94. The compression strength of the CMC-bonded haematite pellets increased as the free moisture content decreased, reaching a maximum upon depletion of the free moisture content. Haematite pellets with CMC concentrations of 0.1 and 0.2 wt% developed most of their strength within the first day after pelletizing, whereas pellets with concentrations of 0.3 and 0.4 wt% developed most of their strength between one and two days after pelletizing. The time within which CMC-bonded haematite pellets develop most of their strength is therefore dependent on the CMC concentration. IntroductionFines are produced during the beneficiation of iron ore. These fines are separated from the lump ore and can be upgraded to produce a concentrate, which is used as a raw material for the production of pellets. Pellets in turn form a key burden material for direct reduction processes as well as the blast furnace (Zhu et al., 2015).Inorganic binders such as bentonite have been used predominantly in the iron ore pelletizing process to obtain pellets with suitable properties (Eisele and Kawatra, 2003). These binders, however, have the disadvantage of introducing impurities into the pellets. This has resulted in organic binders being pursued as suitable replacements for inorganic binders, of which carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) shows good potential. Although CMC has been used as an organic binder in iron ore pelletizing, the fundamental principles of how it behaves during pelletizing and how these impact on pellet properties are poorly understood."

Keywords: Sphalerite, Bio leaching, Chemical leaching Sphalerite concentrates were prepared from tailings dam samples obtained from Rosh Pinah Mine in Namibia. The samples were subjected to froth flotation and concentrates containing between 7% and 14% Zn were prepared. Leaching of these froth flotation concentrates were studied in ferric chloride solutions at different Fe3+ concentrations for different times at different temperatures with the influence of other species on the kinetics in mind. Complementary to this research, GeoBiotics, LLC and Exxaro Resources have developed proprietary bioleaching technology for the oxidation of base metals concentrates using GEOCOAT bio heap leaching technology in a sulphate medium. The ferric chloride laboratory work was performed in a fluidising leach reactor. The studied material was obtained from flotation concentrate produced during an investigation into the recoverability of a tailings pile at Rosh Pinah mine in Namibia. The optimum conditions for the laboratory investigation were found to be a Fe3+ concentration of 0.3 mol/dm3 at 80°C. A control was performed by using synthetic zinc sulphide. GEOCOAT evaluation tests are performed for the purpose of evaluating the bioleaching of ore and flotation concentrates by means of mesophilic bacteria, Column tests were carried out on the flotation scavenger concentrate from Rosh Pinah to assess the application of the GEOCOAT® process for the oxidation of a low grade zinc concentrate. In this study an attempt was made to demonstrate the relationship between the Kinetic models and the experimental data by plotting the fraction of Zinc leached against time and applying the different equations to the data. The kinetic models were applied to the data obtained from both the test regimes. Habashi (1999) proposed that if a process is controlled by a chemical reaction at the interface (phase boundary controlled reaction), the following equation applies. kCt =1 ? (1-R) 1/3 Alternatively a process is controlled by diffusion through the product layer the following equation applies: [kt = 1 23- X (1 ? X) 2/3] As the anodic dissolution reaction progresses, reaction product forms either a more or less dense reaction product layer on surface As this product layer forms, a diffusion problem develops governed by the nature of the product layer. The conclusion from the study was that the kinetics is very dependent on the type of ore processed relating to the mineral composition of the ore body.

Austenitic stainless steels are welded using low-heat inputs. However, owing to differences in the physical metallurgy of austenitic stainless steels and duplex stainless steels, low-heat inputs should be avoided for duplex stainless steels. This paper highlights the differences in solidification mode and transformation characteristics of these two types of alloys. Recent work on the effect of heat input on the properties of weldments of duplex stainless steels is reviewed.

The role of viscometers for rheological characterization in the hydraulic transport of solids is discussed, and rheological models and phenomena pertinent to the hydraulic transport of backfill material are reviewed. The two main branches of viscometry (rotational and tube) for the measurement of mining slimes rheology are compared. The effects of solids concentration, particle size and chemical additives and the practical application of rheology in backfill system design are presented.

The reduction of fluxed and non-fluxed manganese, ores by ferromanganese silicide by W. P. CHANNON, B.Se. (Eng.), M.Sce. (Eng.) Wits. (Visitor) and J. B. SEE, B.Sce. Hons., Ph.D. (New South Wales), M.I.M., M.I.M.M. (Member) In South Africa, medium-carbonferromanganese is produced by the silicothermic reduction of slags containing MnO. Because of its importance in the production of refined ferromanganese, a study was made of the reaction between a premelted South African Mamatwan manganese ore and various ferromanganese silicide reducing alloys, with and without fluxing agents. Because the reaction is highly exothermic, temperature appeared to have little effect on the rates of manganese transfer to the metal and silicon transfer to the slag, and an apparent equilibrium was rapidly approached. Limits were determined for the favourable effects of fluxing additions, and manganese recoveries were found to decline as the ratio of CaO to MgO decreased as a result of the addition of basic flux. The recovery of manganese passed through a maximum, and subsequently decreased for variations in the ratio of alloy to ore. The results obtained, when used in conjunction with other physicochemical data related to this slag-metal system, suggest optimum slag compositions for the efficient manufacture of medium-carbon ferromanganese from Mamatwan ore.

In mid-1984, SAIMM reached an agreement with the South African Region of what is now the Institute of Metals to combine the physical-metallurgical activities of the two organizations. This was the outcome of several years of informal collaboration, and followed the recognition in 1982 by the SAIMM Council that applied physical metallurgy had grown in importance to South African industry and should have a place alongside the two areas already well-established for SAIMM commitment and support-mining and extractive metallurgy.
