The Bushveld platinum group metal deposits in South Africa are the largest in the world. These deposits occur as two distinct stratiform tabular ore bodies and strike for many hundreds of kilometres. Mining is extensive, with depths ranging from close-to-surface to 2300 m. The mining method is a variation of planar open stoping. Crush pillars are widely used to support the open stopes. These pillars are designed to fail and the residual strength provides the required support resistance to stabilize the stoping excavations. This paper describes the in situ measurement, of stress within a Merensky pillar from Impala Platinum. These measurements were used to derive a stress-strain curve that includes pre and post failure behaviour. 2D FLAC modelling, with strain softening, was done to investigate how damage expands into the hanging- and/or footwall. Although the so-called ?squat? effect is always present, the modelling suggests that it does not dominate the pillar system behaviour at larger width to height ratios. Punching of the pillar into the hanging- and/or footwall increasingly controls the pillar system behaviour with larger width to height ratios. The paper investigates the behaviour of a system that incorporates the immediate hanging- and footwall, as well as the pillar itself.

This note considers the most fundamental concepts of support design for deep underground openings and discusses them briefly in the context of tabular stoping and deep hard-rock tunnelling. It concludes that the conventional re-bar, mesh, and lacing methods that have been widely used in deep gold mines are quite inappropriate for the support of highly stressed tunnels. The following is suggested as the criterion for adequate dynamic support: the energy absorbed by a support unit (yielding through some acceptable limited displacement) should exceed the kinetic energy generated by the mass of rock that is intended to be retained by that unit.

When coal properties are estimated geostatistically for mine planning in the hardcoal industry, there is one important supposition which influences the reliability of prediction of economically profitable parts of the deposit. This is the fact that activities in hardcoal exploration and mine planning are characterized by distinct levels of information and knowledge upon which decisions of economic import must be based, for example, whether exploration should proceed or not, or which methods and strategies should be used to maximize search efficiency. To get more reliable results for mine planning, in particular, advanced kriging methods (e.g. conditional simulation) have to be introduced and checked for their reliability in historical analyses (post-mortem studies). By using this feedback, kriging results from underground samples or production data can be compared with results gained by advanced geostatistical methods from exploration boreholes.

The improved design of support systems and stoping strategies when changes in depth, stratigraphy, or mine layouts are considered must rely on the designer's fundamental understanding of the deformation mechanisms adjacent to underground openings so that he can extrapolate and predict expected mining conditions. This paper presents a numerical approach to the modeling of the growth and interaction of mining-induced fractures near the edges of deep tabular excavations in brittle rock. Fractures are represented by displacement-discontinuity elements that are allowed to propagate according to prescribed growth rules. This procedure is justified by the reproduction of several features observed in laboratory simulations of fracturing around openings in blocks of rock subjected to uniaxial and biaxial compression. An attempt is then made to explain some of the attributes of the fracture zone surrounding tabular stopes. Particular questions of interest are the sequence in which fractures form and are mobilized in front of the mining face, the effect of parting planes parallel to the plane of the excavation, and the distribution of stress parallel to the hangingwall and footwall.

The techniques used in this study of the non-oxidative dissolution rates of high- and Iow-grade nickel mattes in hydrochloric acid involved leaching and the use of a rotating ring-disc electrode. It was found that the rate of metal dissolution depends on the potential at which the matte dissolves, a maximum rate of dissolution being observed at -0,2 V to 0,3 V (relative to a saturated calomel electrode). The results are comparable with those obtained in work on the dissolution of synthetic nickel and iron sulphides. The adverse effect of excess sulphur on the rate of nonoxidative dissolution is explained in terms of the mixed potential of the reaction. The leaching studies showed the feasibility of processing a high-grade nickel matte by non-oxidative dissolution, and indicate that maximum rates can be obtained in the presence of fairly Iow concentrations of oxidant. A relative selective dissolution of iron can be obtained from the Iow-grade matte under reducing conditions, thus resulting in a significant upgrading of this material. The discovery of the gold-rich Main Reef Group of reefs on the farm Langlaagte in 1886 marked the opening of the richest and most extensive goldfield in history. Mining of the narrow reefs progressed from the outcrops to more than 3,5 km, and has made South Africa the foremost mining country in the world. Changes in the political and socio-economic climate create a new challenge to the gold-mining industry. The most significant of these is the emergence of Black trade unions, with their demands for higher wages, improved safety, job advancement, and abolition of discriminatory legislation. Industrial conflicts on gold mines have risen significantly in the past ten years, and are likely to continue in the future, although the causes of these conflicts may change. Events largely outside the control of the gold-mining industry, such as the improved dollar price for gold and the depreciation of the value of the rand relative to major currencies, have enabled the industry to meet the demands for higher wages and to narrow the wage gap. However, labour productivities have improved insignificantly and are a cause of major concern for the future development of the industry. Continued pressure in the industrial-relations area, the inflation of working costs, and the extension of mining operations to greater depths and more difficult areas create major challenges to mine managements and mining engineers. Significant improvements in mining technology, environmental control, and safety will have to be made to ensure the long-term survival of the industry. The unavoidable introduction in deep gold mines of mechanization on a larger scale to meet the requirements of higher labour productivities and a better and safer underground environment will have a major impact on the cost and management structure of these mines. Engineering will assume a more important role on deep gold mil1es, and management styles and structures will have to be adapted to accommodate these changes. The supply of suitably qualified engineers, technicians, and artisans will be a crucial factor controlling the rate of technological change. The industry is well-geared through its Group system to meet these challenges, and to benefit from the experience gained in the operation of highly mechanized mines. However, changes take time to implement and there is very little time left.

A dynamic simulator of the leaching and adsorption cascades of a gold plant was developed and used to compare the effect of various disturbances on the overall efficiency of the plant. These comparisons show which disturbances most critically need to be controlled to optimize plant performance. The simulator was based on an existing gold plant. Dynamic and steady-state data were collected on the plant and were used in the modeling of the process. Simple dual-rate models are used to describe the leaching and adsorption processes. Mole-balances of various species take into account the changes of concentrations in the leach, and also the movement of pulp and carbon up and down the adsorption cascade. Fluctuations in the flow rate, density, and cyanide concentration of the feed to the leach have a negative effect on the efficiency of the leach, while carbon attrition was found to be an important factor in decreasing the efficiency of the carbon-in-pulp (GIP) section. Badly regulated transfers contribute towards the decreased efficiency of the GIP section, but overflows and carbon leakage have only a limited long-term effect. Various carbon profiles and transfer schemes were studied, and the results indicated that a slightly heavier loading at the bottom of the cascade is beneficial, while the type of transfer is relatively unimportant.

As a result of the rising electrical energy costs in South Africa, a method was sought to reduce the overall electrical consumption of typical shaft systems. A typical shaft configuration was analysed and the primary energy consumers were identified. The ventilation fans for this system were found to consume 15% of the total energy of the shaft system. It was calculated that more than 50% of this energy is consumed by the shaft itself, more specifically, by the pressure losses that occur in the shaft as the ventilation air passes through it. In order to ensure that the theory being used for the evaluation of these shaft systems is accurate, a total of five shafts were instrumented and the actual pressure losses over the shafts plotted against time. These shafts were then analysed from a theoretical perspective. Finally, in order to ensure a thorough understanding of the behaviour of the ventilation air in shaft systems, the systems were simulated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques. There were significant discrepancies between the theoretical analysis and the CFD simulation during the initial comparisons. This discrepancy lessened as the complexity of the CFD models increased, until when the complete shaft was modelled using the full bunton sets, the pipes, and the flanges, the difference between the theoretical evaluation and the CFD simulation was small. This result demonstrates that the theory is insufficient and that the interrelated effect of the buntons and fittings has not been fully appreciated by current theory. The final phase of the work presented here was to evaluate the costeffectiveness of using different bunton shapes and shaft configurations. It is shown that the increase in the pressure losses and therefore the direct operating costs of the shaft can vary by as much as 80%, depending on the bunton configuration chosen. The placement of the piping in the shaft can increase the pressure losses, and therefore the direct operating costs of the shaft, by as much as 12%, depending on the placement of the piping in the shaft; this effect includes the use of flanges. The use of fairings on a large cage can reduce the resistance that the cage offers to the ventilation flow by as much as 30%. This, however, does not translate into a direct saving because as the cage moves through the shaft, the overall effect is transitory. Suggested thermal stress limits for safe physiological strain in underground environments by J. M. STEW ART M.Sc. (Eng) (Witwatersrand) (Visitor) and C. H. WYNDHAM M.B., D.Sc. (Land) (Fellow) A comparison of safe temperature limits, based on Mitchell and Whillier's equations for specific cooling power (SCP), with similar limits determined experimentally shows the SCP-based limits to be unnecessarily conservative. It is argued that, while a small part of this conservatism may be attributed to an erroneous extrapolation of the heat transfer dependence on wind speed, the major part is probably due to the use of too Iowa limiting mean skin temperature in the calculation of SCP. A combination of Mitche/l's basic data with results available in the literature permits the derivation of modified heat transfer equations based on data that fully cover the range of wind speeds of interest. These equations, using a mean skin temperature of 36°C as the basis for the calculation of safe temperature limits, are then shown to agree favourably with those determined empirically. Furthermore, values of SCP based on these equations are shown to correlate reasonably well with wet kata readings, giving positive support to the wet kata thermometer as a heat stress meter.

The advantages to be gained from the use of a high-density ion-exchange resin in a uranium recovery circuit are shown. It is concluded that, in existing fluidized-bed plants, the throughput of solution can be increased by up to 40 per cent at the same uranium recovery. Alternatively, the values in the barren solution can be improved at the same flow-rate of solution.

AngloGold Ashanti?s Obuasi Mine, in Ashanti Province, Ghana, operates a plant utilizing bacterial oxidation technology. The mineralization consists predominately of arsenopyrite with gold associated in the sulphides. The plant was commissioned in 1994, at that time was the largest BIOX® plant in the world, and has been operated by AngloGold Ashanti since 2004. The constraints identified in the plantwere the flotation capacity, BIOX® feed size and disruptions to the BIOX® process. This paper focuses on the practical steps that were followed in order to increase the recovery of the plant. The original plant design was based on a head grade of 10 g/t and an overall recovery of 86.5%. In 2007 the plant was operating at an overall recovery of 79.2% at a head grade of 5.6 g/t and this has improved to 80.6% at a head grade of 5.8 g/t during the last quarter of 2008. Additional improvement to 81.5% are expected by the end of April 2009. Improvements that have been implemented include: ?Replacement of the regrind mill ?Installation of additional float capacity ?Installation of a scavenging circuit ?Installation of a complete water treatment plant. In addition we have focused on the effect of the water circuit on the BIOX® process and the steps involved in correcting this problem. The water circuit was originally designed as an open circuit and through environmental considerations the circuit was closed towards the end of 2007. The bacteria in the BIOX® are particularly sensitive to cyanide and cannot tolerate levels above 0.05ppm (free cyanide), this required extensive modifications to the water circuit. The plant improvement project is ongoing and the current scope of work should be complete by the end of April 2009. Further research and development work is being planned, which includes a ?white rot bacteria? that can consume the preg-robbing carbon and oxidize the sulphide in a single pass.

A risk evaluation model has been developed, that enables the quantification of expected injuries and economic losses resulting from rockfalls associated with a support system in a given geotechnical environment. This enables the comparison of different support systems based on the expected frequency of injuries and the total cost of the support system, including the expected economic losses. The model takes into consideration the variability in joint orientations and joint strength within the geotechnical environment and the variability and quality of support systems. The quantification of the benefits of other rockfall risk-mitigating strategies, such as the effectiveness of barring or monitoring, are also incorporated in the model. The risk model is described in this paper and the validation of the model and case studies are described in Part II.

Design criteria and recent developments in large-capacity Wemco flotation cells by P. KIND, Ph.D. (Clausthal), B.Sc. (Visitor) The scaling-up of the large flotation cells that have been developed during the past few years has been based on hydrodynamic considerations and has resulted in a 500 ft3 cell unit. Plant results on a porphyry copper ore show that the 500 ft3 unit is equivalent to the previously used 300 ft3 model.. . Plant tests on the use of 300 ft3 flotation cells for the recovery of phosphate, particularly from the coarse size fractions, are also described.

Froth flotation is well-established and efficient in the selective separation of valuable particles from unwanted material with sizes ranging from 10 μm to 200 μm. However, when it comes to the separation of ultrafine particles (< 10 μm) there are still some challenges, or rather opportunities. This research aims at developing a method for the separation of ultrafine particles based on multiple particle properties. Amongst such properties are wettability, morphology (shape or roughness) and size with applications not only in mineral processing but in general chemical engineering. In this study, three differently shaped fractions are used as valuables for testing: spherical particles, elongated particles and irregularly shaped particle fragments; together with ultrafine magnetite as the gangue material, in order to investigate the effect of particle morphology on ultrafine particle flotation, as well as wettability, which is varied by esterification using alcohols. Flotation tests are carried out using a novel flotation device that was designed especially for the flotation of ultrafine particles, combining advantages from machine-type froth flotation and column flotation. The results showed that, in contrast to previous studies, recoveries for ultrafine spheres were higher than for ultrafine fragments for all wettability conditions, and hydrophobisation generally increased particle recoveries for said morphologies. Tests using fibres showed different behaviour as hydrophobisation had negative effects on their recovery, despite increased selectivities and kinetics. These findings suggest that apart from influences of particle properties within the suspension zone, their effects on the froth characteristics should be studied in more depth. The lift system is the main part in manganese nodule mining on the ocean bed. It connects the nodule collection system (miner) with the surface platform (mining vessel) and transports the nodules from the ocean bed to the surface. China started the research on lift technology in deep ocean mining in 1991, and a slurry pump hydraulic lift method has been developed for the nodule mining system. The detailed slurry pump hydraulic lift experiments have been undertaken with crushed nodules in the vertical pipe. The lift parameters to lift coarse particles in the lift pipeline have been discussed, including the pressure drop, the solid concentration, and the mixture velocity. The author of this paper not only took part in all these studies on the lifting technology, but was also responsible for some of this research. This paper will present the component parts of the lift system and the research results of coarse particle mixture flow in the vertical lift pipeline. An account is given of a study on the non-oxidative dissolution in aqueous acidic solutions of nickel sulphides of different stoichiometric composition, in which a rotating ring-disc electrode was used. The rate of dissolution was found to depend on the potential of the sulphide and the nickel-to-sulphur stoichiometric ratio. A maximum rate for the dissolution of nickel from nickel sulphides containing an excess of nickel was recorded at potentials around -0,2 to -O,3V. The rate decreased markedly at more anodic potentials. For nickel-deficient nickel sulphides, the nonoxidative dissolution rate increased with a cathodic shift in potential. Under open-circuit conditions, a nickel sulphide of a composition approximating Ni ,S. reacted most rapidly. The dissolution rate was controlled by either a chemical or an electrochemical reaction at the electrode surface, had an activation energy of between 50 and 65 kJ.mol-1, and was independent of stirring speed.

The paper covers many literature reports of processes using nitrogenous species as an oxidant for processing refractory gold ores, especially development in the pretreatment of refractory gold minerals by nitric acid. These processes include the high-pressure and the atmospheric-pressure oxidation methods. High-pressure oxidation processes are difficult to carry out, because they require high-capital cost autoclaves. Atmospheric-pressure oxidation processes are easier to manipulate, but complete absorption and reuse of NOx is difficult or multiple-stage absorption must be established for its reuse. So, some new methods were developed, such as catalytically oxidizing technology of NOx to allow subsequent recovery of gold. Keywords: nitric acid; pretreatment; refractory gold

The Relix process is based on direct contact between an ion-exchange resin and undiluted pulp, thus avoiding prior solid-liquid separation. The resin particles float near the surface of the pulp, forming an inverted fluidized bed with the pulp flowing downwards. The basic idea was demonstrated on a full-scale pachuca tank at Stilfontein Gold Mine in 1970, followed by a small-scale demonstration run in a laboratory at the National Institute for Metallurgy. A pilot plant based on a throughput of 60 tons of ore per day was subsequently operated at West Driefontein Gold Mine for several periods over two years. Although the plant proved operable from a mechanical point of view, the metallurgical performance was not up to expectation. The basic cause of the poor metallurgical performace was shown to be backmixing of both the resin and the pulp between stages. The values obtained for resin losses were inconclusive. Further development of resin-in-pulp processes for the recovery of uranium should be focused on the performance of various techniques for the screening of resin from pulp.

This paper reviews the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Royalty Bill of 2006, identifies potential areas that require further consideration by the National Treasury and, where appropriate, offers alternatives. At its basic level a royalty regime consists of two elements: the base and the rate that must be applied to the base. Deciding on an acceptable royalty rate is a complex matter and can be done only after extensive analysis of all variables affecting the competitiveness of the regime. The proposed royalty rates are in the range of zero to five per cent and are based on sales revenue. It is argued that future investment patterns are more likely to be influenced by market cycles and commodity prices than policy events. Inevitably the current boom in the minerals sector will come to an end and the success of the proposed regime will be known only when profit margins are under pressure. Policy makers must therefore have the long run in mind when developing policies that affect the ability of industry to do business, without the need to renegotiate each time there is a change in the market. A long-run policy must be sufficiently flexible to allow for consistently fair sharing ratios and splitting of revenues between government and industry. Although broadly in line with international practice, the current version cannot be regarded as internationally competitive and efficient. In order for the royalty bill to become internationally competitive, promote beneficiation of mineral production and adequately compensate the State for the loss of a national resource, the National Treasury should heed the following main recommendations in this review: 1. Abandon the notion that each mineral product must have its own royalty rate; 2. Introduce an NSR type royalty that allows for value-addition costs to be deducted from the base; and 3. Provide for automatic relief through the use of a sliding-scale mechanism based on ability to pay, e.g. the X-Factor used in the gold mining tax formula.

The influence of Iscor coke and Delmas coal on the reduction of Mamatwan manganese ore to ferromanganese was examined by use of a variation of the &apos;stationary charge in controlled environment&apos; (SCICE) technique. The charges of Mamatwan ore and the appropriate reducing agent were heated to temperatures between 1300 and I600 °C and either allowed to cool immediately the required temperature had been reached or held at that particular temperature for periods of up to ... hours. The heating rate was 350°C per hour, the particle size of the ore was between 2,83 and 12,7 mm, and the particle size of the reducing agent was between 2,83 and 6,35 mm. After being allowed to cool in air, the reacted charges were examined by optical microscopy, X-ray-diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and electron-microprobe analysis. No significant difference was found between the changes observed during the reduction of Mamatwan manganese ore by Iscor coke and by Delmas coal. A hypothesis is advanced to explain the mechanism of formation of the Fe-Mn-C alloy.
