Mining of As-bearing minerals had resulted in the release of arsenic species predominantly As(III), which is known to be more toxic, and undue exposure to it is detrimental to human organ systems. Many materials have been examined for As(III) removal, but it is still challenging to advance sustainable materials for effective removal of As(III). In this paper, a more eco-friendly and superparamagnetic Fe0-Fe3O4 composite was synthesised and evaluated for heterogeneous catalytic oxidation and removal of As(III) with peroxymonosulfate (PMS, KHSO5). The kinetic removal studies showed that removal of As(III) was probably through a chemical process and the Elovich model best represented the experimental data. The removal capacity for As(III) on Fe0-Fe3O4 with PMS (1.76 mmol/g) is superior to that without PMS (0.83 mmol/g). Combined results from XPS and ESR showed that As(III) was fully transformed to As(V) through catalytic oxidation by Fe0-Fe3O4/PMS and afterwards enhanced its removal. The removal mechanism of arsenic was ascribed to the formation of outer-sphere (electrostatic attraction) and inner-sphere complexes. The adsorbent can be separated easily from water due to its excellent magnetisation (64.5 emu/g) and also has good reusability potential as more than 85% of the initial concentration of As(III) was immobilised after five consecutive cycles. Decision making can be defined as the selection process of the best routes from the alternatives in order to achieve a goal, and mostly involves uncertainty. Additionally, mostly qualitative variables (weak rock, massive ore deposit, etc.) are in question. Mine planning engineers often use their intuition and experience indecision making. As fuzzy set theory has been used since 1970, these uncertainties are easily evaluated in the decision-making process. Real world study is decision making under vague constraints of different importance, involving uncertain data (qualitative variables), where compromises between antagonistic criteria are allowed. This paper presents a new approach in the selection of an underground mining method based on fuzzy set theory for the Ciftalan Lignite Site located close to Istanbul in Turkey. The physical parameters such as geology and the geotechnical properties of ore, hanging and foot wall, economic effects, environmental effects, are established with field and laboratory tests together with the determination of other qualitative variables. Meanwhile, some qualitative variables dealing with the matter was described according to the view of a number of experts. Then fuzzy set theory is applied to these parameters, considering the available underground methods in order to choose the proper method. At the end of the evaluations, the room and pillar method with filling was determined as the most suitable method for the test site. Ferrochrome (FeCr) is a vital ingredient in stainless steel production and is commonly produced by smelting chromite ores in submerged arc furnaces. Silicon (Si) is a componrnt of the FeCr alloy from the smelting process. Being both a contaminant and an indicator of the state of the process, its content needs to be kept within a narrow range. The complex chemistry of the smelting process and interactions between various factors make Si prediction by fundamental models infeasible. A data-driven approach offers an alternative by formulating the model based on historical data. This paper presents a systematic development of a data-driven model for predicting Si content. The model includes dimensionality reduction, regularized linear regression, and a boosting method to reduce the variability of the linear model residuals. It shows a good performance on testing data (R2 = 0.63). The most significant predictors, as determined by linear model analysis and permutation testing, are previous Si content, carbon and titanium in the alloy, calcium oxide in the slag, resistance between electrodes, and electrode slips. Further analysis using thermodynamic data and models, links these predictors to electrode control and slag chemistry. This analysis lays the foundation for implementing Si content control on a ferrochrome smelter.

Practical mining aspects should be considered when conducting pillar designs for bord-and-pillar layouts. The current methodology for pillar design will result in increasing pillar sizes with depth. This affects the extraction ratio and will result in onerous ventilation requirements when cutting large pillars. A holistic approach, including all mining engineering requirements, is required to ensure that the rock engineering designs are optimized to ensure efficient mining operations and sustainable production. Bord widths should not only be a function of the rock mass ratings, but should also be selected to fit the specifications of the mechanized equipment. The use of a ‘squat pillar’ formula for hard rock is discussed in the paper and the formula based on the exponents of the Hedley and Grant pillar formula, is explored. The effect of abutments and geological losses on average pillar stress is also explored. These factors must be considered when designing layouts at increasing depths.

This paper describes the extraction of gold, as the anionic aurocyanide complex, from solution by strong- and weakbase anion-exchange resins. The effects, on the rate of extraction and the loading capacity for gold, of parameters such as pH, temperature, ionic strength, agitation, and the presence of competing anions are reported. The elution and regeneration of strong- and weak-base resins will be examined in a second paper. A third paper in this series will present the results of several smallscale pilot-plant investigations carried out with strong- and weakbase resins In cyanide pulps from various South African gold mines, and will compare the metallurgical performance of resin-In-pulp with that of the carbon-in-pulp process.

Metso Minerals Process Technology Asia-Pacific (MMPT-AP) has been working with many mining companies worldwide performing `Mine to Mill' or Process Integration and Optimisation (PIO) studies. MMPT-AP has developed a proven methodology to improve the efficiency of the mine-mill interface and gain maximum benefit. The PIO methodology involves rock characterisation, mathematical modelling and simulation to generate a list of operational and control changes for both the mine and concentrator. Following the methodology, the list of recommendations is developed relatively easily; the more challenging part depends on the company. Success of a PIO project relies on the ability of an organisation to implement change - both operationally and culturally: the human element. When a PIO project is started, there is initial interest and commitment from the company. But how can this be maintained? How does an operation know if the benefit continues? MMPT AP is now developing long-term relationships with clients to ensure that the increased production and improved efficiency continues. Direct and indirect measurements are used to determine the key factors involved and to understand the cause/effect relationships. Simulation tools also can be used to compare current with recommended practices - so when material properties vary over time, the benefits can still be quantified. PIO is about empowerment: by measuring and understanding what parameters affect concentrator performance, the site personnel now have the knowledge to make a difference. Rather than simply reporting variable or poor concentrator performance, operations can predict when production will be affected and put controls in place to prevent it from happening. This requires support and commitment from the company or `buy in'. Ensuring this buy in continues is the challenge facing every company involved in PIO work - but the benefits are well worth it. This paper will review MMPT-AP's experiences in implementing PIO projects in the long term: from both the consulting and operational viewpoints. MMPT-AP's involvement with a number of companies will be discussed as examples of what works and what does not.

Drying, calcination, prereduction, and smelting are the main steps in conventional crude ferronickel production. Industrially, these steps are conducted using the rotary kiln-electric arc furnace (RKEF) process. In this paper, calcination characteristics of Sivrihisar laterite ores from the Central Anatolia region are investigated. The extent of elimination of chemically bound water and other volatiles was studied by experiments conducted at various temperatures in the 250?800°C range. Phase changes were examined using X-ray diffractometry. For the particle size used in the study, 300°C was determined to be almost sufficient for complete transformation of goethite to haematite, and 700°C was required for effective elimination of all volatiles in the ore.

Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is the particulate component of diesel exhaust, which includes diesel soot and aerosols. When released into the atmosphere, DPM can take the form of individual particles or chain aggregates, with most in the invisible sub-micrometer range of 100 nanometres. The main particulate fraction of diesel exhaust consists of fine particles and because of their small size, inhaled particles may easily penetrate deep into the lungs. The rough surfaces of these particles make it easy for them to bind with other toxins in the environment, thus increasing the hazards of particle inhalation. DPM is a significant health hazard in underground mining operations, where the use of dieselpowered equipment in confined spaces can lead to high levels of exposure among people working in these environments. Classified as a carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), DPM has been linked to severe health effects, including respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, as well as an increased risk of lung cancer. Effective management of DPM is essential not only for protecting people’s health but also for ensuring regulatory compliance, maintaining operational efficiency, and safeguarding the long-term viability of mining companies.

The aim of this study was to examine the effect of grain size distribution control of the raw material mixture on the permeability of the green sinter bed and the properties of the produced sinter. This was achieved by evaluating the granulation characteristics of the sinter mixture (moisture content, granulation time and mean granule diameter) in terms of its green bed permeability, and evaluating the productivity of the sinter bed, the coke rate, tumble index (TI), abrasion index (AI), reduction disintegration index(RDI) and reducibility (RI) of the produced sinter. The raw sinter mixtures contained combinations of Thabazimbi iron ore, Sishen iron ore, coke, lime and return fines. The grain size distributions were controlled by removing the ?0.5 mm size fractions of the return fines and coke, and the ?1 mm size fraction of lime. Of the examined mixtures, a mixture of 20 mass% Thabazimbi iron ore, 80 mass% Sishen iron ore and fluxes where the coke, lime and return fines were all sized had the highest granulation effectiveness and permeability. The sintering properties of the mixtures in which the grain size distributions were controlled, were very similar for all the mixtures, but superior to the base case mixture in which the grain size distribution was not controlled. A brief history of channel sampling in South African gold mines is followed by a chronicle of different sampling events and sampling methods that used the traditional ?hammer and chisel? approach as well as diamond core extraction of the sample. The problems associated with each method of sample collection are documented and the use of a laser scanner to measure the exact volumes of sample material extracted from a correctly delimited sample site are considered. Areas where increment delimitation errors (IDEs), increment extraction errors (IEEs), increment weighting errors (IWEs), and increment preparation errors (IPEs) occur were investigated. A ?simulated chip sample model? is introduced and provides the basis for comparing the percentages of error introduced as a result of improper sampling. The heterogeneity experiment showed that reefs that are more homogenous tend have lower extraction errors than the more complex carbon-rich reefs, which may contribute to understanding the poor mine call factor on mines exploiting the latter types of reef. First of al, it should be emphasized that the object of the paper is not to address the validity of ERR as a tool for the assessment of seismic events or rockbursts, but to determine an in situ modulus for the rockmass with the aid of backfil measurements. Although the De Beers group has a long history of placer mining on land, the group only became actively involved in deep water marine diamond exploration and mining in1983 with the formation of De Beers Marine. Full-scale commercial mining commenced around 1991. Since then, the group marine mining capability has grown into a formidable fleet of 8 large deep water (>70 m) mining vessels, as well as other special purpose geo-survey platforms. Marine diamond production by the group is expected to be just short of 1 million carats in 2006. DeBeers operates across the entire value-chain spectrum from geology and geo-survey, through sampling to mining, and finally ore processing into high value concentrate. Supporting these operations involves significant service activities such as maintenance, security, logistics and environmental management. Specific challenges exist in terms of developing or acquiring appropriate technology for marine mining. These challenges have resulted in DeBeers operating extensive in-house R&D and projects departments, as well as drawing extensively from technology partners. An array of computational and test facilities are also available to support R&D and projects activities. Hydro transport in various guises is key to the current approaches to marine mining and ore processing. Use is made of airlift and centrifugal pumping for hydraulic hoisting of very coarse gravel, while splitters, launders, dewatering, elutriators, jet-pumps, centrifugal pumps, dense medium circuits, pipeline systems, and instrumentation for coarse abrasive particles are used extensively in the ore processing plant.

In this study, a newly developed plaster stemming method is studied and compared with the usual dry drill cuttings stemming method for surface blasting in mines and quarries. Drill cuttings are generally used in open pits and quarries as the most common stemming material since these are most readily available at blast sites. However, dry drill cuttings eject very easily from blastholes without offering much resistance to blast energy. The plaster stemming method has been found to be better than the drill cuttings stemming method due to increased confinement inside the hole and better utilization of blast explosive energy in the rock. The main advantage of the new stemming method is the reduction in the cost of blasting. In one series of blast tests, blasting costs per unit volume of rock were reduced to 16 per cent by increasing burden and spacing distances. Also, better fragmentation was obtained by using the plaster stemming method. Blast trials showed that plaster stemming produced finer material. In the same blast tests, +30 cm size fragments reduced to 5.4 per cent of the total, compared to 37.7 per cent in the conventional method of drill cuttings stemming. With this method of stemming, vibration and air shock values increased slightly due to more blast energy being available for rock breakage, but these increased values were small and under the permitted limit for blast damage criteria.

During the period October 2003 to June 2004, a containerized optical sorting pilot plant was operated at Kloof Gold Mine on a waste rock dump. In this paper, we describe the test work and its results leading to the decision to operate this pilot plant. This paper presents the operational data and financial figures achieved during this project, in particular, for the month of June 2004 when the plant was run at full capacity on three shifts, 24 hour operation. These results are also extrapolated and presented to show the profitability of such an operation at today?s gold price levels and cost structure.

Most coal plants must run under conditions of varying feed conditions or are asked to produce qualities different from that used in the design. This can cause overloaded conditions as the ?bottlenecks? within the plant, depending on plant operation or as the feed changes. During plant design, geological information can be used to determine washability envelopes and blends that may be expected. Historical data can also be used to develop a size distribution envelope as well as to assign reasonable models for each of the unit processes. In operation, a plant can be sampled to determine changes and to refine process models. The information obtained can then be used in an accurate simulation to define how the plant can deal with the changing environment. This paper uses Limn: The Flowsheet Processor to simulate the coal plant in detail and will produce an accurate model, in terms of equipment sizing as well as water, medium, and solids balance, for each change in feed condition. It will show examples of running the simulation through complete density and size ranges and will determine the equipment required to address each part of the performance envelope.

The exploration of deposits generates geological data which are suitable for creating a preliminary tectonic and stratigraphic model. Linked with the topographical map and analysis data from exploration drillings, this information forms a numeric representation of the deposit. The following example demonstrates an expert system which connects chemical quality requirements and quarrying criteria, and develops a quarrying strategy based on the calculated model. Additional constraining factors like process technology, quarrying methods, landscape protection regulations, etc. are included. The goal is to guarantee a long-term, homogeneous material flow from the quarry at acceptable production costs - even in the case of an extraordinarily inhomogeneous deposit. In order to fulfil this requirement it is necessary to consider a large number of rules, criteria and instructions which can be structured as an expert system and programmed with LISP at a comparably low cost. The chosen strategy is not necessarily final, but can be changed any time by altering or varying the framework of conditions. The output consists of a block-working sequence which best satisfies the set requirements for appropriate points of quarry opening.

In this publication he identified the need for a basic, simple book on miningpractice to provide new students of mining with a backgroundto their studies. He also designed the book to providea background to persons operating on the fringesof the industry such as students of economics and journalists.The text extends to only some 120 pages, and containsa sufficient number of monochrome sketches, diagrams,and photographs. It is written in a straight-forward, easyto-read style. The book contains an index and elementarytable of conversion from imperial to SI (metric) units,and there is also a glossary of mining terms that mostreaders would find useful.The author has succeeded in keeping the contentssimple, as indicated by the title. However, after each chapter, there are references to further recommendedreading. The book could be useful in the South African context, although the coverage of coal and opencast mining operations is slender.
