The objective of the study is to examine the apparent influence of soil and near surface rock strata on the severity of damage experienced by surface structures subjected to mine subsidence. The report discusses: 1) modes of ground movement that might complicate or be confused with mine subsidence; 2) prevailing concepts concerning mine subsidence in the Northern Appalachian Coal Field and Illinois Basin; 3) apparent influences of soil and near surface rock strata on the character of subsidence-related ground movements; 4) classifications and criteria for characterizing damage due to ground movements; and 5) types of subsidence damage experienced by homes above active mines in western Pennsylvania. Presented is a damage classification system incorporating a severity index for characterizing subsidence damage to homes with basements above active mines. A series of case histories illustrate subsidence damage to structures above active and abandoned mines.

"In November 1942, a preliminary report on the Swartz Mining District by John H. Soule, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, recommended an exploratory program of diamond drilling. The existence of zinc and lead deposits in this region had been known for many years. In 1943 and 1944, the Federal Geological Survey made a detailed study of the same area. Later work done by the Bureau of Mines in this district followed the suggestions made by these geologists.3/In the latter part of 1944, Felix A. Vogel, Jr., another Bureau engineer, made a study of the Grey Eagle mine in the Kingston Mining District, a few miles northeast of the Swartz district, and his recommendations for diamond drilling were followed in so far as funds permitted. Drilling was started in October 1943 and was completed in June 1945.4/In its program of exploration of Mineral deposits, the .Bureau of Mines 'Ms as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution t national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples of ore and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director.With respect to this report, special acknowledgment for assistance is due to C. H. For more than 10 years coke-oven technologists have been investigating the expanding properties of coal on a scale larger than that afforded by laboratory test tubes. Koppers 4/ was among the first to realize that coals can not be differentiated satisfactorily with respect to expansion in coke ovens by the simpler test-tube methods; in his first method 80 grains of fine coal were coked in a cylinder heated from the bottom, so that the zone of fusion (plastic layer) advanced from the bottom to the top. The scale of test was too small; it has been modified by other investigators, but without significant improvement in practical application of the results. Somewhat later Koppers and Jendne 5/ experimented with a small-scale coke even, one wall of which was movable, in which the layer-coking in a coke oven could be simulated closely. This oven was heated from both sides. Their results with this oven showed a peak in the time-pressure curves near the end of the coking, period when the two plastic layers, advancing from opposite walls, meet. They also found that although the smaller oven was heated from one side only and did not show the Pressure peak characteristic of two-sided heating, it still gave results entirely too high. Russell built an oven similar to the movable-wall oven of Koppers and Jenkner and compared results obtained in it on Beckley expanding coal with these obtained on the some coal in the Altieri 7/ small-scale apparatus. Both tests were conducted at the same constant pressure, but heating was from two sides in Russell's oven and from one side in the Altieri tester. Russell found that the two types of test gave comparable results under constant pressure conditions even though the heating procedures were quite different. He showed later, however, that a "borderline" coal 8/ that contracted in the Altieri tester at constant pressure developed a peak pressure of 4 pounds per square inch in the movable-wall oven heated from both sides at constant volume. He concluded from this that testing at constant volume gave results more accurately indicative of dangerous expansion tendencies than those at constant pressure. He also found that heating from both sides in this oven gave higher pressure than heating from one side only.

In Europe and in certain other foreign countries studies have been made, extending over a period of years, relating to the winning of oil from oil shale. More work has been done in these countries than in the United States, for the reason that a supply of natural petroleum has not been so generally available there as here. Information has been obtained relating to present practices in these foreign lands in the development of a shale-oil industry. It is realized that in the past there has been very little inducement to invest capital in shale-oil enterprise in the United State's because the supply of petroleum has been plentiful; however, the time possibly is not far distant when the utilization of oil shale may be cons¬idered a desirable and financially sound venture, as it may be necessary before long to augment our supply of oil with that recovered by processing shale. The data presented herein portrays at least some of the thoughts of those engaged in obtaining oil from oil, shale in Europe, and they depict some of the results thus far obtained as well as certain plans for further efforts to win oil from shale; it is hoped that those who undertake the development of a shale-treating industry in this country will find useful information in this report.

"The Stoddard mine, Cheshire County, N. H., was explored by the Bureau of Mines in 1944 as a source of the strategic fluorite. Y.Property titles were not investigated.The fluorite deposits of Cheshire Count', H. H., have been known for many years, being reported by Jackson, (Geology and Mineralogy of New Hampshire, by Charles T, Jackson, 1844) and by Hitchcock, in1878 (Geology of Now Hampshire, vol. 3, 1878, by Charles H. Hitchcock). A large pit on the largest or east vein was mined by Lovat Frazer from about 1908 to 1917, This operation is reported to have produced approximately 3,500 tons of fluorspar. In 1917, the American Steel & Wire Co, took over the mine end is said to have produced 3,500 tons of fluorspar before relinquishing the lease in 1923.From 1935 to 1937 the New Hampshire Fluorspar Cc. operated the Stoddard mine, working chiefly on the most westerly of the three known veins on the property, as well as doing some preliminary work on the small central vein. In 1938, the United Feldspar 6 Minerals Corp. leased the mine, and less than 100 tons of fluorspar was produced from exploration and development work, No mining has been done since that time."

This circular presents Part III-A of a series reviewing the literature on effects of breathing dusts with special reference to silicosis; it deals with the economic and legal aspects of dust diseases in industry; Part III-B will contain data on the status and cost of compensation for silicosis, Parts I and II of the series have been issued as Information Circulars 6835, 6840, and 6848; Part I defines and classifies dusts, indicates sources of exposure, and describes the physiological effects of breaching dusts; Part II-A discusses the principal dust factors producing pulmonary pathology and methods of determination of dust in air; and Part II-B presents data on the engineering and medical control in the prevention of dust diseases and general recommendations for their control in industry. A summary and general conclusions will complete the series.

"INTRODUCTION The South Hecla mine, one of the principal mines of the Alta United Mines Co., is situated at Alta in thee Little Cottonwood mining district, about 30 miles southeasterly from Salt Lake City, Utah. The mine has produced copper, lead, zinc, gold, and silver, and is reported to have been one 'of the principal sources of this country's bismuth from 1912 to 1925. The tungsten mineral, scheelite, has been found but has not been recovered. The extreme need for these minerals during World War II prompted an examination of the property by the Bureau of Mines and resulted in an unpublished report entitled ""The South Hecla Mine, Salt Lake County, Utah"" (fig. 1).A Bureau of Mines project 3301 was initiated, and operations were started early in 1943. The primary purpose of the project was to increase substantially the reserves of bismuth and tungsten ores. The critical situation in regard to lead, copper, and zinc developed during the early stages of the operation, and the work was expanded to include the development of ores 'of these metals.An investigation of 'the Albion, Rustler, and Greeley workings adjoining the South Hecla mine was made, and this work is also described (fig. 2); ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSIn Its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. This report presents the results of an investigation of hookworm infection in the deep gold mines of the Mother Lode, California. In this investigation 1,440 miners of the Mother Lode have been examined for hookworm infection; 444 miners were found to be infected; and 91 miners have taken the treatment and have gotten rid of the infection. ·Within a short time after this preliminary examination, an industrial strike started, which gradually scattered the miners and made it difficult to institute the treatment of many of those who had been found infected. ·With the completion, however, of the State survey all these will eventually be identified and treated. In 1906 Dr. F. F. Sprague, of Jackson, Cal., and formerly of the Philippine Islands, recognized the prevalence of hookworm infection in the gold mines of California. He treated many cases of the infection and brought the prevalence of the disease to the attention of his colleagues. Following closely this pioneer work of Dr. Sprague was that of Dr. E. E. Endicott, health officer of Amador County. In 1911 Dr. Endicott a related his experience in a paper before the American Medical Association. In 1909, Dr. Herbert Gunn, under the auspices of the California State Board of Health, made an investigation to determine the prevalence of the disease among miners. b He reported on the blood and stool examinations of groups of men from three large mines in Amador County. The high eosmophilia verified by stool examinations in many of the cases, and the demonstration of larvae in soil from the workings led Dr. Gunn to the following conclusions: 1. Hookworm disease is endemic in certain mines of California. 2. From 50 to 80 per cent of those working in these mines are infected. 3. The infection undoubtedly is present in practically all the gold mines of California and in those of Nevada just over the border. vYhen it was definitely determined by the California State Board of Health to make an investigation, in cooperation with the Industrial Accident Commission of the State of California and the Federal Bureau of Mines, as to the prevalence of hookworm infection among the miners of California, the following procedure was planned: (1) To encourage the superintendents of the various mines to cooperate in the campaign; (2) to diagnose fecal specimens from the miners and determine the percentage of infected miners; (3) to reach an agreement with the superintendents that all infected men must be treated; (4) to make reexaminations of all treated men; (5) to issue "hookworm certificates"; and (6) to eventually reexamine all California miners. A visit to several of the mines on the Mother Lode made it evident that the mine operators would cooperate most cordially in this campaign; in fact, several superintendents had already considered the advisability of such an undertaking.

In mining coal, the Nation's principal mineral fuel, loss of life has been much lower recently than in earlier years when coal mining contributed so heavily to the industrial-accident death toll in the United States. Particularly notable has been the relatively small number of deaths during the past few years compared with the number that occurred 20 or 30 years ago. Reports received by the United States Bureau of Mines, covering all commercially operated mines that were active during all or any part of the calendar year 1935, showed that accidents during that year had resulted in the loss of 1,242 lives. This death toll, although regrettable, represents a material improvement over the industry's experience during most years prior to 1935, and especially over the industry's worst year, 1907, when 3,242 men were killed. Fewer lives were lost in 1933, when 1,064 men were killed at work, than during any year for which complete figures are available.

Extractive metallurgy techniques currently employed to recover silver from primary ores and secondary scrap were reviewed and evaluated to identify and delineate metallurgical problems whose resolution would increase the supply of silver from domestic materials. The survey revealed that practically all primary silver is recovered by froth flotation concentration of various types of ores, followed by smelting and refining of the separate lead, copper, and zinc concentrates. Silver losses during the complex processing are, with rare exception, inconsequential. Furthermore, any silver production gain from base metal ores, which contribute about two-thirds of the total primary silver, is directly dependent no improvement in the market for the base metals. Statistical data on new and old silver scrap are wholly inadequate to make reliable conclusions about scrap processing problems and the possibility of increasing the recovery of silver from the many forms of secondary silver-bearing materials. The available information indicates (1) that efficient silver reclamation practices are employed by the larger users of silver, and (2) that recovery of additional secondary silver involves solution of problems of collection rather than of processing. Several possibilities exist for limited increases in silver production from primary ores by improvement in metallurgical practices. Specifically, research is needed to (1) solve the problem of recovering silver from the copper ores of the Copper Range district, Michigan; and (2) devise economically feasible methods for recovery of silver from presently marginal or submarginal ores char because of grade, location, and frequently complex nature cannot presently be exploited by conventional techniques.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes the implications of in-mine ground control on the automated or remotely controlled operation of longwall mining equipment, Perhaps the greatest challenge to longwall automation researchers is the development of systems that will continuously function in the complex and unpredictable underground environment. The high degree of environmental variability, together with conditions brought about by the extraction process, makes complete automation of longwall mining a difficult task. The intellectual thought processes and split-second decision making required to avert disasters are lost when workers are removed from the face. As many mine operators can attest, minor problems, left unresolved, can eventually accumulate and lead to catastrophic consequences. The automation process will have to assess and manage various routine problems that are otherwise resolved through worker observation and experience.

Interstitial compounds of iron, cobalt, and nickel, and their binary and ternary mixtures with silver, gold, palladium, and platinum were prepared and tested as fuel cell catalysts. The first step in the preparation of the interstitial compounds consisted of preparing finely divided metals. This was done either by the Raney method or by reduction of precipitated hydroxides of the metals. The finely divided reduced metals were then treated with carbon-and/or nitrogen-containing gases to prepare their carbides, nitrides, and nitrocarbides. The materials were tested for cathodic activity towards O2 and for anodic activity towards H2, C3H8, NH3, CO, and N2H4 in acid and alkaline electrolytes at 25° to 90° C in half-cell assemblies. Samples of carbided and nitrocarbided INi-lAg-1Au were about one fifth as active as Pt-black in the reduction of O2 in 35 percent KOH solution, whereas the activities of several interstitial preparations exceeded the activity of Pt-black in the reduction of O2 in 12M KOH containing N2H4. Nitrocarbides of x-Fe2C, 3Ni-1Au, and 1Ni-3Au were effective catalysts for oxidizing N2H4 in liquid NH3 containing NH4SCN. Corrosion of the catalysts by electrolytes was severe in many cases.

Persons interested in th_e study of petroleum and allied substances have long felt the need of a bibliographic index to the literature. This bibliography, which is intended to be the first elf a yearly series, has been compiled by the petroleum division of the Bureau of Mines with a view to satisfying this need. The references include only the more noteworthy writings that appeared during the year 191.5 in both ·the United States and foreign countries. Only patents plainly applicable to the industries in point have been included, although, of course, a close scrutiny of the great volume of patent literature might reveal many other patents of possible value. The references are arranged according to the subject classification on pages 3 to 11. This classification, which is to be followed in the succeeding bibliographies of this series, is offered as a guide for further study and classification of the pertinent literature.

"Dry cells are modified wet primary cells in which the electrolyte is held by absorbent material so that it does not spill aid the cell jars are sealed to prevent evaporation of the absorbed electrolyte. Most dry cells in commercial use are modifications of the Leclanche wet cell. In their usual form they have a hollow cylindrical zinc negative pole that constitutes the containing vessel. An absorbent material, either as a lining in the zinc jar or a bag, separates the zinc cylinder and a rod or flat plate of carbon placed axially inside. A mixture of crushed coke, graphite, and manganese dioxide is tamped about the carbon rod, and the whole mass is saturated with salaanoniac-zinc chloride solution.Dry cells are suitable for services that require minute currents continuously or larger, though limited, amounts of current intermittently. Though limited in this way, they have a wide use, even in underground mining. This paper details some of the applications of dry cells in mines, particularly from the standpoint of greater safety through their use.APPLICATIONSThere are four fields of application of dry cells to mining: (1) Electric shot firing; (2) auxiliary lighting; (3) signaling; and (4) testing.SHOT FIRINGFiring an electric detonator requires very little electrical energy because although the current flow may be 1 to 3 amperes the duration of flow is so small (1 to 4 milliseconds) that the energy withdrawal per shot is almost negligible. Batteries for shot firing need not be large; they may be used for firing either single or multiple shots."

The burning of coal without smoke is a problem that concerns the Government directly because of the advantages of smokeless combustion both in public buildings and on naval vessels. In addition, smoke abatement is a factor in conserving the fuel resources of the United States. Hence, as part of its general investigation of the best methods of utilizing the coals of this country, the Bureau of Mines, which is in charge of the fuel-testing work formerly carried on by the United States Geological Survey, has made extended tests to determine the conditions necessary for the smokeless combustion of bituminous coal in boiler furnaces. Bulletin 39,¢ a preliminary report, treats the smoke problem from a theoretical point of view, detailing the steps that are being taken by municipalities, manufacturers, and citizens to abate smoke, also showing the possibility of a clean city. The present bulletin not only shows that bituminous coals high in volatile matter can be burned without smoke, but also that large plants carrying loads that fluctuate widely, where boilers over banked fires must be put into service quickly and fires forced to the capacity of their units, can be operated without producing smoke that is objectionable. Proper equipment, efficient labor, and intelligent supervision are the necessary factors.

This report summarizes the results of a research project entitled "Fatal Accident Data Base Development." This project is the last project under Contract No. S0110601. Volumes I and 1I, "Industrial Engineering Study of Hazards Associated with Underground Coat Mine Production," summarize the original industrial engineering project and the Fatal Accident Report Analysis project. These projects were completed and accepted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines on December 10, 1971. Both volumes of the report have been made available by the Bureau to the public through the U. S. Department of Commerce technical information service. Another project under the same con tract, entitled "Equipment Operations Safety Study, ' was completed in January 1972 and the report was accepted by the U. S. B. M. at that time. The analysis in this Natal Accident. Data Lose Development report is closely related to analysis in both of the earlier reports. The original project involved an industrial engineering and safety of production operations for a representative sample of underground bituminous coal mines. The contactor was required to make recommendations 'in work practices, mining methods, equipment, and safety practices which can effectively reduce the fatality rate from rib and roof falls.' (Longwall mining methods were excluded from the study.) Time study and work element analyses were performed in over 50 mines as part of the field data gathering effort. Another requirement of the study was to develop sets of multiflow. Process charts, which are diagrammatic illustrations of the time-related interaction of mining, cycle job elements.

Some of the investigations conducted by the Bureau of Mines have for their object the collecting and disseminating of information regarding methods by which the fuels of the country may be most efficiently used. As the analysis of flue gases tends to develop better methods of firing, which in turn reduces waste of fuel, the Bureau of Mines in this bulletin presents for the benefit of those in charge of boiler plants and all other persons interested detailed information on methods of sampling and analyzing flue gases, and on the utilization of the analyses in promoting boiler-room economy. This bulletin is intended to be a companion to Technical Paper 80,a and is written in plain and nontechnical language, as far as possible, so that it may be readily understood by persons who have not had the advantage of a technical education. Whenever possible, illustrations of apparatus and methods of handling have been used rather than elaborate descriptions.

These volumes report on the study initiated by the U. S. Bureau of Mines to develop and apply a methodology to quantitatively assess the probability and potential benefits of technological innovation over the next twenty-five years. The potential was recognized for new technology to solve copper industry problems in the United States. Objectives of the study were to: (1) Develop a methodology to obtain the opinions of mineral experts about future events -their likelihood of occurrence, and, conditional on occurrence, when and to what extent they are likely to occur; (2) Identify, select, and describe potential technological innovations which would have significant impact on copper production; (3) Implement the methodology and obtain the opinions of the mineral experts regarding selected copper technologies; and (4) Analyze the expected future benefits of successful technological innovations :n the copper industry. Although individual technologies are continuously examined throughout the copper 'community', this study is the first known comprehensive forecast of future copper technology. This study is also believed to be unique 1n that it represents the consensus opinion of over sixty expert copper technologists on the expected use of innovative technology in the industry over the next 25 years. The report is contained in three volumes.

IN THE HALF-CENTURY that has passed since the Bureau of Mines was established in July 1910, the research and technologic investigations conducted by the Bureau's scientists, engineers, and other personnel have helped significantly in improving health and safety in the mineral industries and have contributed substantially in conserving the Nation's mineral resources through improved techniques in the mining, treatment, and use of mineral commodities. From Bureau laboratories have come new materials for industry and better methods of extracting and processing minerals and mineral fuels. Bureau safety investigations-complemented by equipment testing and by programs of mine inspection and education-have brought about safer and more healthful working conditions.
