Two of the most important economies in coal-washing are in the actual washing of the coal and in a proper lay-out to reduce to a minimum the cost of labour for handling and washing. A guarantee is usually required for turning out a washed coal containing not more than 2% of free dirt and a resulting refuse with not more than 2% of free coal; any plant that gives results within such guarantees can he considered economical, provided that there are no other losses during the washing process. Various drainage arrangements and washery lay-outs are illustrated and discussed with respect to drainage, bunkers, sieves, settling tanks and conveyors and two further points considered: siding accommodation, which may become quite important with washeries of large capacity especially when the coal is brought in railway-wagons; and the irregularity with which the coal arrives. In 1903, seventeen years after mining of the Witwatersrand gold-bearing reefs started, the findings erf the Miners' Phthisis Commission (Transvaal) resulted in the initiation of measures with the object of controlling dust production. The substance of these measures was as follows: Removal of persons from places where they would be exposed to blasting fumes; use of water to suppress dust made in drilling and in other operations; supply and control of air to working-places; filtration of dusty air; and determination of the amount of the dust in the air. Broadly speaking, progress in dust control has followed these four lines with increasing success as the nature of the problem has become better known. Complete success has not, however, been achieved, partly because increasing mechanization of mining has intensified the problem and partly because the application of these measures is not infallible, being subject, in many cases, to human control. A brief summary of the development of these measures will lead to a description of present-day practice.

"The Trojan nickel deposit occurs within a pile of ultramafic lavas subjected to a lower amphibolite grade of metamorphism. The lavas form part of the Upper Greenstones (Bulawayan Group) of the Mazoe greenstone belt. The nickel mineralization occurs as disseminated, massive and near-massive sulphides. The massive and near-massive ore occurs along the basal contact of the serpentinite units and is overlain by the more abundant disseminated ore, which occurs within the serpentinite. The main sulphide minerals are pyrrhotite. pentlandite and chalcopvrite. Minor amounts of millerite and pvrite are present. The Ni : Cu ratio in all three types of ore averages 15:1.The intercumulus nature of sulphides in the near-massive ore and similar textures occasionally seen in the disseminated ore indicates a magmatic origin of the mineralization. The basal position of the near-massive and massive ore suggests that the sul­ phides settled out under gravity during the emplacement and crystallization of a peridotitic magma. The deposit has been deformed and some of the primary massive ore has been remobilized into veins and breccias. The disseminated mineralization now occurs mainly as blebs of sulphides intergrown with silicate minerals or as stringers of sulphides between foliation planes in the serpentinite."

"Most of the discoveries of nickel sulphide deposits in Western Australia have followed the search for gossans. The chances of further discoveries depend on improving our understanding of the cover of strongly leached and transported materials that obscure approximately 85% of the area of the Yilgarn Block that has nickel sulphide mineralization potential. The lateritic profiles that are observed on the Yilgarn Block today were formed over a period of more than 100 m.y. of warm and humid climates. This lateritized land surface has been preserved by induration during subsequent arid climates as well as by the structural stability of the Yilgarn Block.In geochemical surveys of lateritied terrain samples have to be taken from at least the saprolite zone usually by drilling so that confident predictions can be made of the significance of analytical data. Account must be taken of the mineralogy of samples, as well as the nature of the horizon of a laterite profile that is being sampled, owing to the concentrating effects on trace elements of Fe and Mn oxides.Multivariate techniques have been applied successfully to analytical data in gossan recognition when textural evidence is ambiguous. Pathfinder geochemistry has also been used in gossan recognition and the most significant recent advance has come from studies of platinum group metals in nickel sulphides and their dispersion during weathering."

Sequences in open pit mining must be planned and regularly revised to incorporate changes in the variables which affect profitability. Interactive computer planning with colour graphic facilities is an effective tool for this purpose in the short and medium term. An interactive computer planning system for medium-size, low grade porphyry copper-molybdenum open pits is described. The planning system proved especially valuable during the critical stages of pushback mining when deep, inner pit ore was nearly depleted and the erratic grades of the next pushback provided ore and marginal material at a time of depressed metal prices.

The reduction of naturally weathered ilmenite concentrate occurs in two steps: reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+, followed by reduction of Fe2+ to Fe. Small amounts of a magnetic phase were also observed and may correspond either to an Fe3O4-FeTiO3 ilmenite phase or to an Fe3O4-Fe2TiO4 spinel phase. The total amount of metallic iron produced after 12 hr was only 50% of the total iron present in the sample.

Trackless battery powered haulage vehicles have been in operation in British coal mines principally for longwall face transfer and personnel transportation. Changes within the industry have resulted in the introduction of room and pillar coal mining methods and the introduction of increasingly heavier longwall roof supports This has resulted in the introduction of: • Battery powered coal haulage machines, which, without the need for trailing cables, increase productivity within room and pillar mining. • Battery powered longwall shield haulers which are capable of carry ing the heaviest shield supports currently being utilised within the British coal mining industry. The conventional machines have been adapted from an American design to meet the requirem ents of European legalisation. This has seen the- emphasis being placed upon the supplier with the European M achinery Directive being introduced, necessitating the assigning of a 'C E ' m ark to each vehicle. Battery vehicle technology has advanced to meet the demands of the ever changing market and will no doubt he further adapted to meet the requirement of the British coal mining industry.

In northern Vietnam Ni-Cu sulphide deposits associated with ultramafic rocks are located in several continental rift zones of Permo-Triassic age. In recent years a number of ultramafic bodies have also been discovered in southern Vietnam, but detailed work on sulphide occurrences within these bodies has still to be undertaken. A brief description is given of some N i-C u sulphide deposits that are located in the northern part of the country. Of the depos­ its that have been examined in any detail, those in the Takhoa region are of the greatest economic interest. Ni and Ni-Cu sulphide bodies have, however, also been found in association with the ultramafic rocks.

Cemented fill was first introduced at the Keretti mine in 1952, but entailed high cement costs, the need for stope preparation, slimes handling, clean-up and maintenance, increased mine dewatering, segregation of fill and long setting times. In the 1970s research began into the use of iron blast-furnace slag as a binding agent and by 1989 Pyhasalmi, Vihanti, Keretti, Vammala and Enonkoski had saved US $11 000 000 by using slag binders instead of cement. Viscaria in Sweden and Tara in Ireland also use slag as 90-100% of total binder, although their backfilling methods vary. The main area of interest in slag research is determining the activation methods for initiating the binding reactions; it is also important to achieve other characteristics such as resistance to corrosion by sulphuric ion. New backfilling techniques developed during the 1980s included the use of high-density cemented tailings fill at Vammala and porous cemented rockfill at Enonkoski and Viscaria. Future developments focus on concepts such as integration of mining and milling with backfilling and the achievement of total underground disposal of wastes
