For many years the scrubbing of roaster gas carrying sulphur dioxide has been carried out at the plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd. at Risdon, Tasmania, using long horizontal tubes. in which the gas stream crossed a shower of water. In order to provide for increased roaster capacity, it was evident that additional gas scrubbing capacity would be required to prevent pollution of the atmosphere.This provided an opportunity to review the whole operation of gas scrubbing and an investigation was initiated to determine the characteristics of a counter-current type of scrubber. It was hoped that a change to this type of scrubbing would also reduce the sulphur dioxide concentration of the gas delivered to the atmosphere to a negligible amount. This, paper outlines results obtained from an experimental tower which was operated under a wide range of conditions, the packing height, gas flow, water flow, water temperature, and concentration of S02 in inlet gas being varied independently. A description is given of the leading features and operating characteristics of the plant units, which are designed on the basis of the experimental results. Operation of the new scrubbing system commenced on October 5th, 1948.THE PROBLEMThe gas which is handled carries S02 which may vary in concentration from 2% to 5%, and reaches the scrubbing system at a temperature of approximately 180 deg. The reduction of geological risk for planning of high production longwall faces is essential. Geological and geophysical techniques applied at Huntly West Mine before 1989 were unable to reduce the geological risk to an acceptable level. The success of a trial long-hole directional drilling programme at Huntly West Mine (Fowke et al, 1989) has encouraged the Coal Corporation of New Zealand to use the technology long-term, for seam definition. Initial drilling in 1989 completed a total of 3543 metres, with the longest borehole length being 369 metres (limited by number of rods available). A major re-interpretation of seam structure resulted from the drilling, which was able to fill in seam details between surface exploration boreholes. The undulating thick seam conditions at the mine require a refinement of drilling strategies used overseas. Long-hole directional drilling also displays potential for inseam gas drainage. Gas flows of the order of 1000 L/min were initially indicated in individual boreholes. Other gas parameters of the seam have been studied by Beamish et al (1991), and highlight the significance of the natural gas resource in the Huntly Coalfield.   The continued development of drilling technology will be of major benefit sustainable development, particularly in policy.

In this case study we compare the sampling quality of diamond drilling (DD) and reverse circulation (RC) drilling at the high sulfidation Purnama gold–silver (Au-Ag) deposit located in northern Sumatra, Indonesia.There was a systematic bias of 23 per cent gold metal under-call in the diamond drilling based Ore Reserve estimate compared to the mill reconciliation over three years of production. The RC based Grade Control data and mill production data were in much closer accord. Investigation led to quantification of the significantly reduced sampling imprecision (or improved precision) of RC drilling samples relative to diamond drilling samples and the determination of a grade bias between the drill types caused by sample volume and metal distribution in the mineralisation. An infill RC drilling program was undertaken to improve data density across the pit for inclusion in the Mineral Resource estimate. This subsequently increased Au metal in the estimate by 16 per cent.The sampling imprecision of primary diamond drill sampling is rarely tested. Duplicate sampling can be used to quantify sampling imprecision at each stage of subsampling. In diamond drilling it is tested at the primary sampling stage via second half core sampling, while RC sampling is tested with field duplicate sampling at the rig. Duplicate data can be compared in a number of ways to determine imprecision including Thompson-Howarth plots which quantify imprecision to allow comparison between different methods and protocols. With depth, many gold ores become sulfidic with minerals such as pyrite, pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite becoming prevalent. In addition, many underground gold mines use tailings backfill to bind and store the waste. In these cases, acid mine drainage (AMD) can become an issue. One approach to the control of AMD is desulfurisation whereby the sulfide minerals are removed prior to disposal. Four sulfide tailings samples, representing different ore types and gold and base metal operations, were selected for assessment and testing using simple physical beneficiation techniques. The aim was to determine the extent to which mineral processing methods were suitable for separating sulfides from non-sulfides and for extracting potentially marketable by-products from the tailings. In order to streamline the testing procedure a simple diagnostic separation technique was developed to enable quick screening of bulk sulfide tailings for suitability for reprocessing. The testing procedure involved detailed characterisation and a sequential set of testing regimes based on simple unit processes including water washing, classification, gravity concentration, magnetic separation and bulk flotation. The preliminary test results indicate each unit process can play an important part in producing effective sulfide/non-sulfide separations and in generating useful by-products from the tailings. Potential valuable products identified include coarse, benign silica sands, bulk iron sulfide products rich in pyrite and/or pyrrhotite, high-grade iron products (magnetite) low in silica, low-volume bulk sulfide concentrates and low-grade molybdenite and talc products. The work presented shows how sulfide tailings can be viewed as a resource rather than a waste stream, and identifies a pathway for developing a more sustainable approach to the environmental management of sulfide tailings for the future.

Technology is playing an increasingly large role in the operations of our mines. There is a temptation to regard the implementation of technological systems as the objective itself when, in reality, systems are used to support a business process. Only when the process succeeds will the systems be seen to succeed. Understanding the distinction between system and process is critical. This understanding, together with the resultant holistic approach, is considered to be critical to successful implementation and operation of Mine Control process. This paper examines the critical factors essential to success in establishing and sustaining a Mine Control process that maximises benefits to an operation. These factors have been developed during the author's experience of nearly 30 years in Mine Control projects across over 50 sites. Each factor is discussed in relation to real world examples at well-known mines.

A substantial proportion of current and historic West Coast gold production comes from deposits situated around the margins of æice ageÆ glaciers. Gold has been eroded and transported by glacial ice then deposited in till and outwash gravel. The interplay between fluvial and glacial processes, climate, basement geology, tectonic uplift, sediment supply and sea level dictates many aspects of the development of the West Coast landscape. The way in which the external forcing factors interact is crucial in determining the gold content of placer deposits in this region. The following is an outline of some of the factors that influence the gold distribution in vicinity of glacial margins.

It is a pleasure and a privilege to be with you for the Annual Conference of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.The inaugural meeting of The Institute was held in Adelaide in April, 1893. Through the kindness of your President, who passed on to me several publications concerning The Institutute I have been able to glance back over the eighty years in which The Institute has served both the profession and Australia.In that record, many names of great distinction caught my eyes. When one reads the list of past presidents of the The Institute since 1893 and the list of those to whom The Institute Medal has been awarded, one reads the headings of a biographical dictionary of the Australian mineral industries. Many famous names are there-men from the great mining companies, engineers, scientists, metallurgists and geologists. Simply to read the names is to recall great enterprise and great achievement. Going over those names one hears the echoes of the inspiring story of the establishment of the Australian steel industry, the electrolytic zinc inq.ustry, all the major developments in the mining of coal, gold, copper, silver and lead, the treatment of difficult ores, the geological exploration of a cqntinent, the discovery of uranium, bauxite, petroleum, nickel, the establishment of the alumina industry and finally the mammoth earthmoving operations of today. The list of names is a chronicle of great men who did a mighty work. They stand like milestones in the progress of a nation.When one reads further and runs down the titles of some of the papers published in the Proceedings of The Institute even a layman like myself can appreciate the dramatic developments in mining and metallurgy that have transformed the whole practice of the mineral industries in our land. Recovery of Fine Gold Particles from Philippine Gold Deposits by Enhanced Gravity Concentration and Flotation The objective of the study is to determine the applicability of enhanced gravity concentration (EGC) and flotation for gold recovery. While gravity concentration methods have long been applied to gold ores, especially to free-milling types that requires minimal beneficiation, flotation for gold recovery has not yet taken hold as a major operation in the Philippine setting. In this study, the application of EGC and flotation for gold is applied and compared to the existing methods for gold recovery. Two samples, with assays of 7.315 and 5.333 g Au/MT (samples 1 and 2, respectively) are used for this study. These samples are subjected to mineralogical studies and is found to have a gold-particle size ranging 10 to 200 microns. To verify the separation size, the mesh-of-grind (MOG) is used as the primary parameter for experimentation. Initially, the samples are stage-crushed, ground, and subjected to EGC using a Falcon SB40 Concentrator. Based on the results, the two samples showed that recovery increases with a finer MOG. The ratio of concentration (K) decreases with a finer MOG. This shows that there should be sufficient liberation of the gold values for EGC to be effective. The effect of the enhancement is to pronounce the difference in specific gravity of the minerals, promoting better separation. This is validated by the high recovery values of 86.97 per cent and 98.73 per cent exhibited respectively for samples 1 and 2 (at 54 microns). For the flotation runs, sample 2 with an average particle size of 80 per cent passing 74 microns is examined using thiocarbamate-based collectors for roughing and subsequently exhibited a recovery of 96.32 per cent. At this point, the concentration ratio (K) is noted as an important efficiency indicator for flotation process since it yielded a very low-mass and high-metal content concentrate.

The oxidation of sulphide minerals in aqueous suspension is discussed from several viewpoints. Limitations of our present knowledge are pointed out, and several points where further information would be of special interest are mentioned.Firstly, some properties of minerals and their effect on oxidation are discussed. Properties of different species, such as crystal structure, lattice bonding, and "metallic" properties are mentioned, and then the effect of variation within a given species is discussed. The effect of physical factors, especially particle size, is also considered. Other variables discussed include the importance of solution composition, and its effect on the nature and rate of reaction, and the use of various oxidising agents. Some factors concerned with the whole system, such as temperature, pulp density and stirring rate are then considered.Finally, the nature of various oxidation products is discussed with reference to the kinetics of reaction and the nature of the rate limiting step. It is suggested that more attention should be paid to electrochemical explanations of the reaction mechanism.INTRODUCTIONKnowledge of the factors governing the rate of oxidation of sulphide minerals in aqueous suspension is a prerequisite for the effective control of many ore treatment operations. Rapid oxidation of sulphides is usually desired during the leaching of sulphide ores and concentrates, but in the cyanidation of gold ores, or in the leaching of uranium ores, any oxidation of sulphides may be regarded as an undesirable side reaction. A process for the recovery of cobalt from a speiss produced at Sulphide Corporation is presented. The speiss is leached in oxygenated sulphuric acid to dissolve the metallic iron at a pH of around 4. The resultant iron (11) is subsequently oxidized in the leaching vessel and precipitates as goethite. Acid is regenerated in the precipitation allowing dissolution of further speiss. Subsequent to the conversion of most of the iron in the speiss to goethite, conditions become sufficiently oxidizing to dissolve cobalt. Cobalt is not co-precipitated under the leaching conditions, yielding a pregnant solution containing the cobalt and some iron (11). The principal advantage of such a process is the significantly lower acid consumption over that obtained by complete dissolution followed by selective precipitation. An impure product of cobalt hydroxide can be obtained from the pregnant solution by neutralization.

Mesothermal quartz lodes in Paleozoic Greenland Group metasediments of the Reefton area have produced 67 t of gold up to 1951, and recent exploration has identified new gold resources in several deposits, including the largest past producers, Blackwater and Globe Progress. The metasediments consist of alternating sandstone and argillite, metamorphosed to lower greenschist facies and hydrothermally altered near the quartz lodes. We examined and sampled drill core from four prospects, Globe Progress, General Gordon, Merrijigs and Blackwater, to determine the mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of hydrothermal alteration in the sandstone units. The sandstones are feldspathic litharenites averaging Q65, FlO and R25, with detrital grains of quartz, feldspar, rock fragments, muscovite, biotite (mostly altered to chlorite), and trace quantities of graphite, apatite, zircon, tourmaline and titanite. Hydrothermal alteration has developed a secondary mineral assemblage of K-mica (muscovite, sericite and illite), carbonate, chlorite, pyrite, arsenopyrite and limonite. The abundance of secondary chlorite is greater at Blackwater than at the other locations studied. Features in the sediments associated with increasing hydrothermal alteration towards quartz lodes include, the development and increasing intensity of colour bleaching and carbonate spotting, increasing quantities of disseminated pyrite and arsenopyrite, and the appearance and increasing quantity and size of thin carbonate, quartz and sulphide veins. This is accompanied by increasing concentrations of sulphur, arsenic and antimony as shown in assays, and of volatiles (loss on ignition) and iron as seen in XRF analyses. We were unable to identify consistent trends in the behaviour of potassium, sodium, and calcium that are exhibited by similar mesothermal quartz lode deposits inVictoria, Australia.

The method of investigation was to study the distribution of ore in great detail, to make a thorough structural study of the lode and the mine area, and then to compare the results of the two studies. Such a comparison usually reveals a very close relationship between geological structure and ore distribution, and can often lead to important conclusions which would not be reached in the ordinary working of a mine.The Triton mine lies 30 miles E.N.E. of Cue, or 380 miles N.W. of Kalgoorlie, in typical pre-Cambrian rocks, consisting of gTeenstone lavas and tuft's, interbedded with slates and some sediments, and intruded by granite and porphyry. Fig. 1 (at end of paper) is a longitudinal section of the mine and shows that the workings consist of the main North Emu and the smaller South Emu, separated by a distance of about 1 of a mile. Both orebodies occur on the same lode, which strikes north and south and dips practically vertically. On the same line, and of 1/2 a mile and a mile respectively to the north of the North Emu, are the small Rand and North Rand workings, where a big width of lode material has proved to be very low grade. In the North Emu the lode width averages 12 to 15 feet; it is seldom less than 5 feet and in places reaches 30 feet. In the South Emu the lode is wide, but only portion of it is payable.The lode is a mineralised bed occurring between massive lava flows on the east and a mixed series of tuft's and thin lava flows on the west. The lode material is hard, fine grained, and dark coloured, and generally has a faint banding which is believed to indicate a tuft'aceous origin of the original lode rock. Microscopic examination shows that the original lode rock has undergone considerable albitisation;' there has also been considerable formation of biotite which gives the lode material a characteristic sheen. The mineralisation consists of abundant fine pyrite, which is auriferous, and a lesser development of pyrrhotite which is, however, barren of gold.THE OREBODIES AND THEIR CHARACTERISTICSThe distribution of ore is best studied from gold contours, as these reveal features that cannot be detected in an ordinary assay section. Gold contours (see Fig. 3) are developed' by plotting the width and grade of all development and stoping assays throughout the mine on a longitudinal projection, representing each sample by a coloured dot according to a suitably chosen range of assay values, and then outlining areas of similarly coloured dots (see H. J. C. Conolly, Econ. Geol., April, 1936). Both width and grade must be taken into account and the simplest method of gold contouring is to use dwt.lft. values, but difficulties arise here with big widths of low grade and small widths of high grade ore. To choose an extreme case, 30 ft. of 2 dwts. and 2 ft. of 30 dwts. both equal 60 dwts.lft., and would therefore be given the same value in dwt.lft. contouring...

The Ministry of Commerce has been carrying out an evaluation of the resources of the Northwest Nelson region. In part this was to revisit the issues covered in the earlier proposal to close part of Northwest Nelson to mining under section 24 of the Mining Act (1971) initiated in 1990. In addition, the option of using GIS to integrate a variety of spatial data sets to aid policy formulation could be tested. The Northwest Nelson assessment would be a useful trial. The subsequent national park proposal provided a major impetus to the project and resulted in the scope of the study being broadened to include all energy and minerals resources.

The Mount Isa property has been in operation since June, 1931; during this period operations have changed from the production and treatment of carbonate ores to the mining, milling, and smelting of sulphide ores. This change involved revision of ore-extraction methods.Stoping methods have been designed to apply to parallel lodes ranging from 10 ft. to over 100 ft. in width and dipping at 50° to 60°. The hardness and strength of the ore and enclosing wall rocks, together with the strength and thickness of the country rock between lodes, have permitted the selection of a sub-level stoping method for mining the sulphide ores.

IT has often been stated in the past that the materials known as inert fillers were merely adulterants nsed in the manufacture of paint, and that their purpose was to cheapen paints made from more expensive pigments, such as zinc oxide or white lead. In recent years, however, practical tests in various parts of the world have proved that many of the inert fillers, when used with wisdom, possess very definite and advantageous properties.Another oft-repeated statement which had a far-reaching effect in the past, and which is not without influence to-day, is that the very best paint must always be made from a pure pigment, without admixture with either a fellow pigment or an inert filler. Both or either of these statements may be true in a few isolated instances, but for the vast majority of ordinary painting conditions there is an abundance of experimental evidence to prove that neither is true.With the desire to further investigate these points and po 'determine the best combination of pigments and fillers for use as an outside white paint on plant buildings, a number of panels were prepared in the laboratory of this company.

Results of laboratory studies on the flotation of marmatite (zinc sulphide) with new reagents, which were developed to avoid the use of copper sulphate, are presented.Episulphides were chosen as the basis for the reagents because of their reported special chemical affinity for zinc and cadmium. Attempts were made to solubilize and introduce functional groups to episulphides with organic and inorganic acids, ammonia, phenol, aniline, diethylamine, and pyridine. As a class of reagents, the episulphide-amine combination was generally found effective in zinc sulphide flotation to a greater or lesser degree. Best results were obtained with ethylene sulphide-aniline combination. Although anilino-ethyl mercaptan is the reported reaction product of aniline and ethylene sulphide, it was concluded that the effective zinc sulphide flotation with ethylene sulphide-aniline combination is not entirely due to the formation of the mercaptan.The economics of the possible usage of ethylene sulphide-aniline reagent are discussed.

Thermodynamic calculations based on the ideal system NiO - Fe203 - H2(g) - CO(g) - H2O(g) - CO2(g) show that it is not possible to selectively reduce nickel oxide in the presence of hematite because ferronickel is the zero-valent nickel-containing product. The calculations show that temperature, reducing atmosphere composition and oxide to reductant ratio have a marked effect on the nickel content of the ferronickel alloy and the amount of nickel reporting jn the alloy. The general trends based on the calculations correlltte well with experimental observations.

Experience is reporled in the operation of the pilot Lurgi carbonization plant at Morwell, afler it had been reconstructed to obtain better control of the heating of the briquettes in order to produce a strong char suitable for use as a metallurgical fuel. The theoretical Ideal Heating Cycle, which had been designed from earlier laboratory research, was closely approached in the carbonizer, and up to 97 per cent of the whole dried briquettes entering the carbonizer were recovered unbroken in the char.The strength of the char produced in the pilot plant was limited by the performance of the drier where the cracking and breakage of the briquettes was more severe. Theoretical studies have indicated that this limitation could be removed by using a hot briquette feed to the pilot plant. Experience indicates that with a hot briquette feed to the drier and with ideal heating in the carbonizer, hard char could be produced from Yallourn briquettes in continuous operation.The project has been terminated for economic reasons...
