The paper presents a brief history of endeavours to start a mining education programme which began in the days when Papua New Guinea's first large mine, at Panguna (Bougainville), was coming into production. The status of the Public Investment Programme in Mining Engineering and the facilities being created for the education and training of Papua New Guinean citizens in mining and mineral processing are also described. Future expansion plans are also detailed including those for the commencement of petroleum engineering and geological engineering which would include courses in mining geology, exploration geology, engineering geology and petroleum geology. The paper also looks at the manpower training requirements in the lower levels of mining industry such as pit foreman, blasting foreman and other similar positions. It stresses the need to start mining technical training programs at pre- employment level and at certificate level in a technical college, possibly Lae Technical Colleqe.

An account is given of experimental apparatus for generating a short duration high velocity water jet and the effect of its impingement on various rock samples under air or water cover. The penetration was found to be highly dependent upon the rock structure; in general material with closely interlocking grains was resistant.The damage sustained by a stationary sample held close to the jet did not vary greatly whether the sample was in air or confined under a water layer; but when the sample was translated under the jet there was a marked increase in the damage sustained.Some consideration was given to the possible practical application of a water jet for deep hole drilling and an estimate made of the power requirements and transmission losses for such a system.

This paper describes the excavation of No. 1 Power Station Lift Shaft at the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Project. The advantages and limitations of the borehole method are outlined, and general principles of plant design are discussed.INTRODUCTIONFor many years, attempts have been made to reduce mine development costs by various methods. Some of the, techniques of tunnelling have been adopted in horizontal headings, and in main vertical shafts, mechanical plant has displaced hand labour with notable success. However, in the field of small rises and winzes, improvements have largely been effected by attention to details of procedure. The most promising avenues for' substantial reductions in cost relate to:(a) Long-hole drilling(b) The borehole method(c) Calyx drilling.Whilst each of these methods has its peculiar advantages, the borehole rising method is probably most useful, and capable of wide application.In brief, the borehole method of rising requires a, drill hole parallel to the axis of the rise. Operating experience with the pilot Lurgi carbonization plant at Morwell showed that under conventional operating conditions, although the thermal efficiency of the plant was very' high, the physical quality of the char produced was extremely poor. By variation of operating conditions to produce the slow drying rate developed by the laboratory research at the University of Melbourne, an improvement in the size of the char was achieved. A similar approach in the carbonization stage where severe breakage of the briquettes still occurred was not possible due to insufficient control over the heating in this stage. Theoretical analysis of the heat exchange process has shown that severe heating of the briquettes entering the carbonizer is a characteristic of the Lurgi system and cannot be controlled by modified operation. The plant has been closed down for reconstruction of the heating system to enable it to be used to produce hard char.INTRODUCTIONAn experimental carbonization plant was operated at the Morwell Works of the 'Gas and Fuel Corporation from November 1958 until July 1959. This plant was built as a pilot plant by the Corporation to designs supplied by the Lurgi Gesellschaft fur Warmetechnik and had the nominal capacity to carbonize 25 tons of brown coal briquettes and to produce 11 tons of char per day. The ore, as sent to the sulphide mill, is a mixture, in varying proportions, of oxidized ore from above the 450-ft. level and sulphide ore from above and below (to date mainly from above) that level. The oxidized ore consists essentially of quartz, with varying amounts of kaolin and clayey material which passes into the slime and, in excess, creates a serious problem in settling. Pyrite may be present in small amounts. The gold is free and extremely fine.The ore, classed as sulphide, consists of pyritic material in a quartz gangue. The sulphides have been exposed to weathering, leaching by descending solutions and attack by ascending gases and actual burning. The alteration products occur in widely varying proportions and this variation adds to the difficulties in settling and control of grinding and flotation.Copper Minerals.-Chalcopyrite is the principal copperbearing mineral with smaller and varying amounts of covellite, which is sometimes associated with chalcocite, both these minerals being apparently of secondary origin.Examination of tailing by Dr. Stillwell has revealed all stages between clean chalcopyrite, chalcopyrite tinged with covellite, covellite with residual cores of chalcopyrite and clean covellite.The chalcopyrite is free floating, very few particles of clean chalcopyrite being observed in the tailing from granular flotation. A simulation model was used to study the performance of various types of screen cloth on industrial vibrating screens. The model takes into account the effect of loading upon screen performance and predicts both themass flow rate and size distribution of the screen products.It was found that the use of the simulation model allowed the reconstruction of data for identical conditions and hence has simplified the analysis of the comparative performance of the screens. The dependence of performance upon operating conditions was found to vary markedly with screen cloth type.

Perhaps one of the most important conferences or symposia which our Institute has conducted, was the joint Aus. LM.M./AJ.M.E. meeting held in Canberra in May 1978, with the theme International Resource Management (Woodcock, 1978).We were privileged to witness active participation in the meeting by outstanding personalities from the mining and metallurgical industries of Australia and New Zealand, the United States of America, Canada and the United Kingdom and to hear addresses on subjects of international significance to the mining and metallurgical industries.Our Institute is one concerned with professionalism.The principal objects of The Institute as described by our founders include, "promoting the arts and sciences connected with the economical production of the useful minerals and metals, and the welfare of those in the industries, by meetings for social intercourse, and the reading and discussion of professional papers, and to circulate by means of publications amongst its members and associates, the information thus obtained".Sir Maurice Mawby (1968) said in his Presidential Address to the Institite, "the most important aspect of these objects was the promotion of the arts and sciences of the mining industry".Why is it then, that a large proportion of the papers given at the meeting in Canberra dealt with world wide social aspects of the mining and metallurgical industries, rather than the technology, the arts and sciences of mining and metallurgy as principal factors in international resource management?The answer is quite simple of course, and that is that the social and political factors are the principal factors which create the demand for basic raw materials and in the long term determine the costs and prices of the commodities which our professional abilities are drawn upon to produce.

NATURE OF ORETHE Edna May ore consists mainly of clean quartz of a moderately hard and tough nature. The gold content is "free" and fairly coarse, so that a large percentage is recovered by amalgamation. The ore is practically free from metallic minerals.GENERAL OUTLINE OF PLANT AND TREATMENTThe ore, received from underground in trucks, is broken by a jaw breaker, then stamp-milled, follow~d by partial filie-grinding in pans. Mercury is used both in the mill boxes and pans. The pulp, on leaving the pans, passes over amalgamating tables and is then elevated by tailings pulp to cone classifiers and separated into a sand and slime product, each product receiving a separate cyanide treatment-sand by leaching in vats and slime by agitation and decantation in a "Trent" plant. Gold solutions from both sand and slime are precipitated together by zinc shavings in the usual type of precipitation boxes. Accumulated slime is trucked from the dam to a vortex mixer and from this point receives with the cement slime the same treatment.ORE BREAKING AND TRANSPORTThe ore is trucked from the brace of the shaft along an overhead line to the breaker station. Few, if any, reliable thermodynamic data are available for the activity of tin oxide in slags. In this work, the activity of the oxide in silica saturated iron silicate slags has been measured at 1573 K using the equilibrium Sn (alloy) + Y2O2-SnO (slag).Slag and a Ag-Sn alloy were sealed in a zirconium oxide crucible to prevent the escape of volatile tin oxide, and the oxygen pressure at equilibrium measured in situ using the zirconium oxide as a solid electrolyte. Activity of tin was calculated from known data for the Ag-Sn system and activity of tin oxide calculated from free energy data. The results have been extrapolated to predict the industrially important distribution of tin and iron between Fe-Sn alloy and iron silicate based slags.

Twin-roll continuous casting technology is rapidly approaching commercialisation. Fundamentally different than conventional continuous casting, heat transfer and hence solidification during twin-roll casting are governed by the interfacial melt/mould thermal resistance, as opposed to the resistance of the solidifying shell. Under these conditions the interface resistance is predominantly controlled by the melt/substrate wetting behaviour. The very early stages of melt/mould contact are characterised by highly transient heat transfer conditions. The overall melt cooling rates prior to the formation of the first solid are reported to be in the range of 1000 - 50000 K/s with melt undercoolings of up to 300 K. At the points of intimate melt/mould contact the thermal resistance is approaching zero, where cooling rates and undercooling much larger than those reported in the literature are probably occurring. Improved wetting will reduce the energy barrier for nucleation while at the same time increasing the cooling rate of the liquid. Since the overall nucleation rate is controlled both by the rate of cluster formation and the rate of atom transfer to the nucleus, a critical cooling rate will exist above which the nucleation rate is expected to be reduced. Under these conditions, it is possible that the first solid phase to form is a metastable glass which subsequently transforms into a crystalline phase. The implications on nucleation and early growth are also discussed.

Thermodynamic properties of the components of this system have been obtained, and it has also been found that the calculated miscibility gap of this system exists over a very narrow range of temperature (1041 to 1058°C).

The Oblaga Cu-Au skarn deposit and porphyry prospect is located in the south-eastern edge of the Gobi Desert in western Inner Mongolia. The deposit occurs within metamorphosed middle Paleozoic volcanic, plutonic and sedimentary rocks.   Ivanhoe geologists recognise eight main rock types in the area. Calcareous sediments include conglomerate, interlayered siltstone-sandstone, and limestone. Covering the calcareous sediments is a slab of thrusted biotite granite, and above it is rhyodacitic lithic tuff which, in places, is overlain by alluvial sediments. Various plutonic rocks and related intrusion breccias have intruded these units. Monzodiorite, quartz-monzonite and monzonite tend to form thin, high-angle intrusions and the youngest andesitic intrusions are generally wider and subhorizontal.   The Oblaga Cu-Au skarn, which occurs in the calcareous sediments, shows typical prograde and retrograde mineralogy. Petrographic studies show that prograde skarn minerals have been overprinted by retrograde skarn minerals, and original host rock minerals have been texturally obliterated and completely replaced. The mineralogy of the Oblaga skarn deposit is very similar to other Cu-Au skarn deposits worldwide.   Sericitic and minor chloritic alteration occurs throughout the study area and may relate to porphyry-style mineralisation. Generally, this alteration is not intense and most rocks have retained their original texture. Geochemical analyses suggest that K-metasomatism is not widespread at Oblaga. XRD analyses suggest an upward and outward transition from sericitic to chloritic alteration.   Comparisons between Oblaga and other porphyry Cu-Au deposits worldwide show that Oblaga has very similar characteristics to deposits that have undergone sericitic alteration. However, Oblaga is special because it also has relatively intense chloritic alteration, which is uncommon in other porphyry Cu deposits described in the literature.

Six years ago it was my responsibility to give the presidential address, and now that privilege has come my way again. On that occasion we were gathered atWhyalla and I took the opportunity of putting before members some observations on the problems we then faced in Australia, and some gains we had been able to chalk up during those early postwar years. You may recall that we were then just beginning to emerge from the difficulties of postwar reconstructions - of fuel and power shortages, and a grossly inadequate manpower for the tasks facing us. The expansion of manufacturing industry in Australia greatly stimulated by wartime activities, and by the postwar developments of many institutions - ran ahead of the supporting services and of the supply of labour to do thejobs. For many industries this unfortunate state of affairs had meant operating at rates well below their installed capacities and therefore levels of output insufficient for Australia's rapidly growing needs. When I last spoke to you these problems were still with us, though their intensity was beginning to lessen as a result of vigorous efforts by industry and governments to reduce them. But I must confess that my thoughts on that occasion were full of those problems and of the effect they were having on the iron and steel industry of this country-of the coal shortage, the labour shortage, and the many other difficulties we were then faced with - and all at a time when the stepping up of our postwar expansion programme was of vital concern to all of us.What a different picture it is six years later! Kalgoorlie is the main mining centre of the Western Australian Goldfields. Its famous Golden Mile' has been noted for the exceptional width and richness of its goldtelluride lodes. Since the mid-1890s production on the major mines has been maintained practically continuously.Rich ore, though not as plentiful or as rich as formerly, is still (1948) being mined in places. Unexplored areas still remain within the main auriferous belt which offer reasonable chances of success with intensive exploration.Much detailed information has accumulated in recent years through the geological mapping of underground workings by some of the larger mining companies. The purpose of this paper is to correlate observations made in most of the accessible old and recent workings in the mines of the Lake View and Star group and elsewhere.GENERAL GEOLOGYRock TypesThe rock formations are:-1. Fine-grained (older) greenstones, locally referred to as calc schists. There were originally pillow lavas and other flow rocks of basic composition, now extensively chloritised and/or carbonated. Pillows and fragmental flow- tops are recognisable. Intercalated with flows near the top of the series are several beds of sediments.2. Graphitic slates and other more arenaceous sediments.Although referred to as slates, they are rarely more than well-bedded shales with poorly developed fracture cleavage:Thick bands of felsitic rock are found in places.

The epithermal Au-Ag deposits of the Hauraki Goldfield have formed in the convergent plate margin setting of the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). The deposits form as siliceous lodes in the upper parts of geothermal systems associated with andesitic and rhyolitic volcanism. Two types of low sulphidation epithermal mineralisation are recognised in these volcanic terranes. Vein deposits within the rhyolitic terrane in the east and south of the CVZ (Whitianga Province) are typified by Chalcedonic Silica-Adularia-Illite type mineralisation. The veins are hosted by both rhyolite-dacite volcanic rocks and the underlying andesitic basement. The mineralisation formed by episodic violent decompressional boiling of deeply circulating meteoric water, with some magmatic fluid contribution; this boiling was associated with hydraulic fracturing and hydrothermal eruptions in geothermal systems where the piezometric surface of the deep geothermal reservoir lay near-surface. Such episodic boiling provides chalcedonic veining, banding and brecciation textures, adularia stability, bladed calcite, and extreme loss of H2S gas from the fluid to cause major gold deposition.   Crystalline Quartz-Illite-(Adularia-Kaolinite) type mineralisation is widespread in the andesitic terrane forming the northern and western portions of the CVZ (Kuaotunu Province). There is a spatial association with weak mineralisation of the high sulphidation (Vuggy Silica-Alunite-Kaolinite-Illite) epithermal type and porphyry eu-Au type. Crystalline Quartz mineralisation is probably formed by the mixing of shallow acidic groundwaters with the ascending deep geothermal fluid in geothermal systems beneath andesitic stratovolcanoes. The piezometric surface to the deep geothermal reservoir in these systems is likely to lie at considerable depth, with acidic gases rising from the geothermal reservoir condensing within the overlying vadose zone. The cooling effect, oxidation and pH decrease accompanying mixing apparently overcomes the dilution effect, and results in quartz deposition, illite (and locally kaolinite) alteration, and precipitation of gold. A high level of base-metal sulphide precipitation also enhances gold deposition. Violent boiling of the mixing fluids may occur at local structural dilation sites, producing high grade "bonanza" gold mineralisation.

In 2005, Solid Energy New Zealand Limited obtained non-notified consent for the disposal of 1Mt of coal ash at the Rotowaro minesite, forming part of a coal supply agreement with the Huntly Power Station. A non-notified resource consent was sought which necessitated that environmental effects be shown to be æless than minorÆ, and resulted from robust science and a pragmatic approach to design. As part of the assessment of environmental effects, there was a need to understand the effects of boron concentrations on aquatic organisms (ie algae, plankton, plants and invertebrates) in the receiving environment. Boron is a naturally occurring element that is found in the form of borates in the oceans, sedimentary rocks, coal, shale, and in some soils but Waikato coals and ashes have particularly high boron content. Boron is an essential micronutrient for higher plants with interspecies differences in the levels required for optimum growth. As aspects of the ANZECC (2000) derived boron limits are based on toxicity of aquatic algae and plants to boron it was important to assess these components in the environment. The effects on the receiving environment of the Awaroa Stream were assessed using predicted water chemistry and comparing actual boron concentrations in a comprehensive and multifaceted reference-condition approach of catchment ecological indicators. In addition a toxicological-based assessment of boron and a re-calculation of the ANZECC trigger levels were undertaken and applied to the ecological indicators. The reference-condition approach revealed that habitat and overall water quality attributes at and between sites was more influential in determining the aquatic biotic communities than boron concentrations alone. There was no evidence of any gradient of changes in ecological indicators with changing boron concentrations, nor evidence of any residual effect of high historic boron concentrations on the aquatic biota.

The term slag has been used to define a wide variety of material including mine spoil and slag produced at steel plants. The present paper is concerned only with the non-metallic alumino-silicates developed simultaneously with iron in blast furnaces.The control of iron quality by slag has long been appreciated but here aspects of slag control based on concurrent iron production are indicated. Consideration is given to the basic composition of slags relative to the type of allotrope required. Up to a point, the plant conditions, under which a particular slag type is processed, have some effect, but these conditions only widen the range of a given allotrope.They do not convert one slag type into another. The nature of the slag types and experiments with additives to convert one slag type into another are discussed.The various uses for allotropes of blast furnace slag are considered.Their use in air cooled slag, foamed slag, slag wool, cements, soil stabilization, glass bottles, and building bricks and blocks, is explored in some detail.INTRODUCTIONWithin recent memory, blast furnace practice has been solely concerned with the production of iron. The slag make at this time had not reached embarrassing proportions. In Britain, unlike Germany, no legislation existed to prevent the growth of unsightly slag banks. Generally slag found limited use as fill and road material in the immediate plant vicinity. This is broadly the case in Australia today. In Europe and America, where the slag make is of the order of several million tons annually, the room problem and the cost of dumping slag has stimulated commercial and scientific research on the disposal problem. Currently, most iron plants in Europe can profitably dispose of at least 95 per cent of their slag make.

An accurate measure of the earth's magnetic field can be made in a few seconds with the portable proton precession magnetometer. Such an instrument increases the applicability of the long successful method of magnetic prospecting for minerals. As an example of the usefulness of the proton magnetometer, a survey over volcanic rocks near Apsley (Tas.) was made.INTRODUCTIONA completely portable magnetometer whose operation is based on the free precession of polarized protons in the earth's magnetic field, is now available on the market at a price competitive with magnetometers based on the classical physical principles. The ease, accuracy, rapidity, and reliability with which measurements of the earth's total magnetic field can be made with the proton precession magnetometer, led to the try-out of the instrument in an actual field problem so as to evaluate fully the capabilities of the instrument. Such evaluation is important, because the history of magnetic prospecting has shown that whenever significantly improved instrumentation has been introduced, prospecting costs have been substantially cut and many areas in which the prospecting costs were formerly considered excessive in relation to probable returns, have become economic mineral prospects. In the Archaean of the Kalgoorlie-Norseman area, the layered rocks have been subdivided into two sequences, both containing basic igneous rocks and sediments. The lower sequence is distinguished by the presence of acid volcanic flows and large acid sills. The upper sequence is unconformable on the lower one.In some areas, clastic sediments become coarser and pass into conglomerates. Th:s passage is accompanied by thinning of the beds.These features and their distribution suggest a basin of subsidence flanked by areas of shore-line conditions.Repeated igneous activity, including vulcanism, has occurred along the flanks of this basin. These different igneous and sedimentary environments have played an important part in the primary distribution of metals.A chronology of all basic and acid igneous activity, as well as sedimentat:on, has been established for the Precambrian of this area.INTRODUCTIONThe subdivision of Archaean rocks into those of basic igneous or of sedimentary origin has formed the basis for the nomenclature appearing in past literature.
