In the course of work being carried out in the Lubricants and Bearings Section of the Council lor Scientific and Industrial Research on the production of copper4ead 'bearings for 'use in aircraft, it has been found necessary to develop special metallographic methods. For proper control of the production of steel-backed copper-lead bearings it is necessary to adhere to rigidly controlled conditions, and it is essential that a method of examination be adopted which will readily detect actual defects or any variations in quality. Some defects can be observed with the naked eye, whilst others are detected by radiographic examination. This latter method is invaluable as a rapid, reliable test in the production of aircraft bearings, but it is necessary to observe the structure of the alloys under the microscope, both to be able to interpret the radiograph correctly and to determine what has occurred to the metal during and after solidification. The use of a sound metallographic technique is'particularly important in developmental work and research connected with these bearings.Polishing TechniqueCopper and lead are practically immiscible in the solid state, but whilst they are miscible only in certain limited proportions in the liquid state; consequently "alloys" of copper and lead consist of a mixture of the constituent metals. The metallographic difficulties are obvious. Copper is a relatively tough metal, although it readily scratches, whilst lead is extremely soft and easily deformed. It wouId be expected if any normal polishing technique were applied that the lead would be readily torn out of the surface being prepared, and, in addition, that the lead would tarnish very easily.Grange(2) has described a method by which these difficulties can be overcome. The method involves an etch-polish procedure using "chrome regia" as an etchant for the copper. The chrome regia was a solution of chromium trioxide and hydrochloric acid in water. This type of etchant has been adopted, but it was found necessary to make certain changes.The method now adopted in this laboratory is as follows: The specimen (which is usually mounted in bakelite) is wet ground in a series of successively finer Hydro-Durexsil emery papers down to 60.0· grit paper.The specimen is then etched in the chrome regis, etchant (the composition of this etchant will pe discussed later) for approximately five seconds.Most efficient etching is obtained by swabbing the surface of the specimen...

The Porgera Joint Venture commenced production during September 1990. A small tonnage underground mine extracts high grade gold ore using small scale stopes. Conventional drill and blast methods are used for development and production mining. Ground support is effected with Splitset anchors, grouted rebar bolts and grouted cable bolts. Splitsets and grouted rebar can be installed by mechanised means. Vertical crater retreat, slot and massfire, and modified VCR stoping tech- niques are used at Porgera. Stopes are backfilled with a relatively strong cemented rockf ill. Future stope sequences require recovery of pillars beside and under filled stopes.

WHEN making comparisons of the efficiencies of different grinding and crushing machines it is desirable to be able to estimate the work actually done in crushing the ore from a given size of feed to a given size of product, the screen analysis of both feed and product being determined. Messrs. Klug and Taylor, in a paper on this subject, published in the monthly journal of the Chamber of Mines of WA, 31st January, 1906, have described a method adopted by them in calculations made in connection with a series of trials of grinding pans. Their methOd is based upon the assumption that if a quantity Q of material consisting of particles of average diameter x be crushed down until the average diameter of the particles is y, then the work done in grinding is proportional to Q x. There is no theoretical basis for this assumption that the writer is aware of, and it does not appear to satisfy the fundamental conditions necessary. If the material be further crushed until the diameter 2 becomes Z, the additional work done is measured. The work done in crushing from diameter x to diameter Z in one operation is proportional to Q x:, and therefore we ought to have zx2 y2 x2 Q-+Q-=Q-. y2 Z2 Z2But these expressions are not in general equal to one another. Powder metallurgy has been developed rapidly in the last twenty years by overseas metallurgists. The technique of making the powders and their subsequent pressing and sintering into useful forms has' only been introduced into Australia under the stress of war-time economic conditions.The technique involved has very little in common with our usual methods of fabricating engineering alloys by melting the ingredients to a homogeneous mass, followed by casting to shape or casting to ingot form and shaping by application of pressure-so-called mechanical working. On the other hand, the technique includes operations, such as milling and sizing, familiar to the primary metallurgists.The compacting of metal or other powders finds important application in two outstanding fields of engineering production: (a) in making porous bearings and contact brushes, in which such a material as powdered graphite can be incorporated; (b) in making cutting tool tips of hard -carbides, which have a melting point too high to make casting feasible, and which would be too brittle in the cast condition in any case. In both these cases; the final article can be made of the desired shape and size (subject to shrinkage allowances) whilst the compact is in a soft and readily machined condition a consideration of great importance in connection with the hard carbides.In order to develop the necessary equipment and technique and at the same time to assisil in the war effort, it was decided to divert the research work of the Metallurgy Department of the University of Melbourne to the problems associated with the production of hard carbides from local raw materials and the sintering of such into tips for cutting tools. Since this work was started at least two industrial concerns have started to produce these materials in the Commonwealth.The work. to date has included (a) the purification of crude cobalt oxide from Risdon and the reduction of this to metal Particles of less than 10 p. diameter; (b) the production of tungsten powder from King Island scheelite and its conversion into tungsten carbide with particle size less than 4 p. diameter; (c) the sintering of the latter product, using the former as a bond; (d) the production of titanium carbide from titanium dioxide; (e) the separation of columbium and tantalum oxides from a Northern Territory tantalite, and the conversion of these into the respective carbides.

SOME notes on the works of the Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Company of Australia will no doubt be of interest to members of the Institute, more especially as much of the work is new to Australasia. As many of the members who may read this paper have not been in a position to visit works of this kind, and are consequently not thoroughly acquainted with all the operations carried on, the author has taken the liberty, in some cases, to enter into explanation which would otherwise be unnecessary. The works are situated at Port Kembla (New South Wales), about fifty miles south of Sydney, and are approachable both by rail and water. The Government has recently built a low-level jetty upwards of five hundred feet long, and intends installing at an early date an electrically operated portable crane to facilitate the handling of material to and from the boats. This will mean: a considerable reduction in the length of time that boats are laid up at the jetty. Project cost control procedures and computer systems have enjoyed a successful and simple relationship over the past decade, thanks primarily to the proliferation of portable computers or PC's. Prior to the introduction of this technology, project control was largely a manual and somewhat onerous task of historical data compilations, with little time available for dynamic forecasting, staged planning, or pre-emptive cost control. Automated systems developed during this era were resident on "Heavy Iron" or mainframe computers and were expensive to maintain and operate. Use of these early systems was limited to large engineering, construction, and industrial concerns with the economies of scale and funding required for their successful application. Systems were either designed for critical path analysis or task scheduling, but rarely integrated with the other, much less cost control.

The present study 'of pure ZnS and NiS and ZnS (marmatite) by detailed electrokinetic methods has shown that by careful control of experimental parameters much new' information on sulphide-water interfaces can be obtained. Time-dependent processes of alteration of sulphide surfaces are foHowed by electrokinetic methods and indicate that the isoelectric point of the surface depends on elemental sulphur coverage, oxidation product coverage, and the conditions which promote or minimize such reaotions in the presence and absence of activator.

Two of the problems long associated with the complete extraction of level pillars in the wide ore bodies of Broken Hill have been: (1) The high cost of maintaining level gangways through areas of slow subsidence to provide adequate trucking roads for the transport of sand filling; and (2) The difficulty and high cost of completely filling depleted areas. This paper deals with the experiments conducted to devise an apparatus for transporting, with the aid of compressed air, sandfill from the underground sand passes to the stopes and describes the sand blower which has been developed. This apparatus has to a large degree overcome the difficulties and removed much of the hazard associated with the rapid extraction of level pillars.Special attention is drawn to the sizing analysis of the sand and to the fact that it is not dry material. Close spatial relationships between the deposits of the Etheridge Goldfield (23 000 kg of bullion) and various regional geological and geophysical features suggest that genesis of the ore deposits was a multi-stage process that started with magmatic and metamorphic stages in the mid-Proterozoic, climaxed with structural and hydrothermal stages in the late Palaeozoic and terminated with an oxidation enrichment stage in the Cainozoic.This hypothesis permits classification of the Georgetown region into areas likely to contain deposits of the Etheridge type and those unlikely to do so; it is concluded that there is little scope for the discovery of extensions of this field.However, the stratigraphic interval between the postulated source rocks of the Etheridge field and stratigraphically higher host rocks of the Croydon field may contain disseminated replacement gold deposits of the Carlin type. The potential host (Pyritic carbonaceous, and locally dolomitic siltstone of the Candlow Formation) is locally faulted and cut by granitoids and the extension of a mineralised, long-standing zone of structural weakness.

Operational effectiveness is fundamental to any operation, becoming highly topical in those experiencing less than optimal output from their fleets. It is all encompassing aiming to identify those factors that could be improved within production and suggesting solutions in order to optimise the existing fleet and obtain the greatest capital return on expenditure.Argyle Diamond Mine (ADM) is a large open cut diamond mine located in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia, approximately 180 km south of Kununurra. It is owned and operated by Rio Tinto on a two week on/two week off roster fly-in/fly-out from Perth or drive in/drive out from Kununurra. Through benchmarking the operation between January and June 2002, a study was undertaken allowing identification of areas falling below target. Following this, analysis of annualised hours and production downtimes were undertaken to quantify the potential gains of improvements in these areas. Strategies were then identified as stated in the 2002 mine plan, in operational effectiveness meetings, and by staff members. This project aimed to maximise direct working hours through determination of the main issues hindering performance. External and internal factors were considered and a continuous improvement program (CIP) was developed. The CIP aimed at internal site-based improvement teams to identify and implement solutions for improvement on a day-to-day basis.

The Resource Management Act 1991 provides for activities to be classified as permitted, controlled, restricted discretionary, discretionary, non-complying or prohibited in district and regional plans. This paper looks at the use of the prohibited activity status to restrict, in particular, mining. Often the use of prohibited activity status for mining appears to have no basis other than the negative perceptions that the local community and/or the planner drafting the plan has toward mining and quarrying.   The paper will address the current appeal regarding the use of prohibited activity status now before the Court of Appeal, and the history to the litigation. The relevance of the outcome of the appeal to the minerals sector will also be explained.

THIS paper is the outcome of experiments carried on and experience gained. at the Waihi-Paeroa Gold Extraction Company's tailings plant at Waihi, New Zealand. The plant was erected to treat accumulated tailings which had been discharged into the Chinemuri River by the Waihi batteries.The Chinemuri River is a common sludge channel for all mining debris, tailings, and ashes from the power plants, the last being the cause of occasional high residues, which gave so much trouble to the management. The tailings were dredged from the bed of the river into barges by means of a Pohle air lift, the power being supplied: by a 13 b.h.p. Tangye oil engine driving an air compressor and a centrifugal pump. The sands were elevated from the barges by bucket-belt elevators over screens, to eliminate large particles and rubbish, into storage hoppers, and from there fed direct into four C. Judd Ltd. tube mills.The method of treatment was fine grinding in a weak cyanide solution, agitation in B. and M. tanks, filtration with turn-over vacuum filters, and precipitation with zinc shavings. The comparatively high values of the residues in gold gave a great deal of trouble, 'and it was not until repeated experiments were carried out that the cause of the trouble was located. Major operating aspects of the Mary Kathleen Uranium Ltd. treatment plant are discussed with partkular reference to those which are peculiar to this operation.Problems associated with the production of a penalty free uranium oxide product are examined and the methods developed to overcome them are described in detail.INTRODUCTIONMary K,athleen Uranium Ltd. is the largest of the Australian uranium producers. The flow-sheet is based on fine grinding, standard sulphuric acid leach, ion exchange concentration, and magnesia precipitation of the final product, with certain modifications introduced as the result of pilot plant investigations at the South Australian Department of Mines Research Laboratories in Adelaide.The plant commenced operations in June, 1958, attained design tonnlige of 1,120 tons per day in September of that year and has since operated continuously with a throughput in excess of 1,000 tons per day. Pilot plant recommendations generally have been followed, and predicted results have been attained. The only exception has been the silica and rare earth content of the product produced during the early months of operation. Considerable modification of the early resin regeneration techniques resulted in the reduction of the silica content of the product to within specification limits. Research work in the ion exchange section has also resulted in the reduction of the rare earth content of the product to below specification levels. All product now being produced is completely within the agreed specification limits of impurities.

The Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA) and the Crown Minerals Act 1991 (CMA) both came into force on 1 October 1991. The purpose behind RMA was to integrate the existing laws dealing with town and country planning, land subdivision, water and soil, minerals and energy resources, coastal management, air pollution and noise control into one omnibus Act. Originally, there was a section in RMA dealing with minerals. However, this section was taken out of RMA and a companion piece of legislation - namely CMA - was passed with RMA.

The abundances and abundance relationships of lead, zinc, copper and silver in the major sulphide lenses at Broken Hill are examined, and their possible geochemical significance discussed.When expressed as atoms per cent, zinc is the most abundant base metal throughout the whole .group of orebodies, the highest average lead: zinc ratio (No. 2 lens) being about 0·45, the lowest (No. 1 lensZinc Lode group) being in the 0·12-0 ·14 range. Lead and silver are clearly higher in the lower two orebodies, but the abundance of zinc shows no apparent relationship with stratigraphical position. Among the base metals copper is conspicuously low and remarkably uniform, a feature noted in other conformable orebodies.Although, as has been recognised for many years, abundances of silver and lead, and lead and zinc, are sympathetically related, correlation within the pairs is variable and generally of low degree. Silver and lead show distinctly the better correlation, particularly in No. 3 lens. On the basis of lead: zinc ratios, No. 2' and No. 3· lenses, on the one hand, and the No. 1 lenses, Rhodonitic and Siliceous Zinc Lodes on the other, constitute two groups. However on the basis of silver : lead ratios, No. 3 lens stands alone, No. 2 lens showing clear affinities with the higher layers. Ternary relationships between copper-zinc-Iead and silver-zinc-Iead emphasize the very close constitutional relationship between the No. 1 lenses and the two "zinc lodes".The possible implications of these relationships are then discussed in the light of the' two principal theories-hydrothermal replacement or chemical sedimentation-held for the formation of the Broken Hill ores. It is pointed out that the ratios of the four metals in the ores are rather different from those found in most igneous and sedimentary rocks, and in seawater. For 'example, whereas copper and zinc are present in almost equal amounts in most terrestrial materials, copper in the ores is only about one-hundredth of the amount of zinc. Lead has increased somewhat, but the ratio of silver to lead has fallen; in spite of its recognition as a source of silver, the Broken Hill lode is impoverished in silver with respect to lead as compared with most common terrestrial materials.No solutions are offered to these prob'lems of abundance. Suggestions have been made at various times that there may be a recurrence of lodes similar to those at Kalgoorlie in the country to the south of the Golden Mile, but, so far as is known, there has been no geological evidence to support these suggestions apart from the possible extension of the younger quartz-dolerite greenstone in this direction.Geological mapping carried out by the writer in the Coolgardie district in 1946, provided some additional geological evidence to support this claim, and the ideas then held have since been expanded and are now considered to be sufficiently advanced to present them as concrete suggestions. As will be seen from the following pages, the critical area for lode prospecting is Hannan's Lake, where the basement rocks may include younger quartz dolerite greenstone, which, although perhaps distributed over a smaller area than at Kalgoorlie, could, on structural grounds, have a similar fracture system and similar ore deposition.There is little need to stress the importance discoveries in this area would have in prolonging the life of the field, and stimulating the post-war gold mining revival.Previous Work: Only the publications having a direct bearing on the preparation of this paper are given in the list of selected references, but the writer is very conscious of the fact that much other geological work has been carried out in the Kalgoorlie district since its discovery, by the W.A. Department of Mines, by mining companies, and others, all of which has contributed to the present knowledge of the field, and acknowledgment of the value of this work is given herewith. In presenting the suggestions in this paper a broad structural control of ore deposition is assumed, but this has already been established in other parts of the goldfields of Western Australia, including adjacent areas. In the early nineteen thirties, the Western Mining Corporation commenced work on the basis that there was a close relationship between geological structure and auriferous ore deposition, and a similar approach was first made by the Geological Survey of Western Australia in the South Yilgarn in 1935. These ideas were further developed during later surveys, particularly in the North Yilgarn and the Mount Margaret Goldfield.During the Coolgardie Survey in 1946, broad structural mapping was done in greater detail than before, and the structural ideas were implemented and further developed, leading to some success.Other work to which particular acknowledgment is given is that of Stiltwell, Gustafson and Miller, Forman, Prider and Finucane, at Kalgoorlie, and that of Honman in the Kalgoorlie-Coolgardie district, references to which are given at the end of this paper.Valuable constructive criticism of this paper has been given by Professor E. de C. Sedimentary pyrites from Tasmania have Se contents that are high for it province showing no overall Se enrichment. Sulphides from Devonian granitic rocks, and related cassiterite-sulphide deposits, Sn-Wand PbZn-Ag fissure veins have similar and relatively low Se contents, and pyrites from Devonian gold-quartz veins have very low Se contents. The high concentrations of Se at Mount Lyell are consistent with enrichment in pyritic Cu deposits in volcanic rocks elsewhere, and the dispersion of Se is consistent with a surface volcanic origin for several of the orebodies. In contrast, sulphides from Cambrian volcanic rocks and associated granitic rocks, and from the Rosebery and Hercules pyritic PbZn deposits, also believed to be of volcanic origin, are impoverished in Se.In the Mount Bischoff cassiterite-sulphide deposits there is no relationship between Se content of sulphides and temperature of formation as indicated by fluid inclusion studies, and sulphides from Devonian ores with different temperatures of formation have similar Se contents.The Se content of Tasmanian sulphides appears to be an unsatisfactory discriminant of their genesis and temperature of formation but in volcanic terrains may be a useful pathfinder for Cu concentrations.

Ilmenite production in Western Australia commenced in 1956. There are now five producers, all in the Bunbury-Capel district, and current total production capacity is about 450,000 t.p.a.The deposits occur near the surface and average between 10 and 50 per cent heavy mineral. About 70-85 per cent of the heavy mineral is ilmenite. Other heavy minerals present include leucoxene, zircon, rutile, monazite, and garnet. The ilmenite contains 52-60 per cent Ti02. and is very low in chromium (0·03-0·04 per cent CrS03)Mining is done by sluicing, drag line excavation, or dredging. Primary concentration of the heavy minerals is achieved by spirals, revolving cones, or Reichert cones. After drying and screening, ilmenite is separated from the heavy mineral concentrate by various types of magnetic separator.Separate leucoxene, zircon, rutile, and monazite concentrates are also produced. Each plant uses a different technique and the processes used include chemical attritioning, screen plate electrostatic separation, high tension rolls, air tables, and dry launders.INTRODUCTIONThe treatment of beach sands in the Bunbury/Capel area for the extraction of ilmenite is a very recent development in the mining industry in Western Australia. Nevertheless, since the commencement of production in 1956, ilmenite has become the sixth most important mineral produced (Table 1).The increasing world recognition of Western Australia as a major producer of ilmenite (Table 2) is due primarily to the low chromic bxide content of the mineral (0' 03-0' 04 per cent Cr203), combined with a medium to high titanium dioxide content (54-60 per cent Ti02), supported by large reserves, a stable government, and close access to good shipping facilities. Ilmenite is. produced from these deposits at low cost which enables the industry to compete on world markets despite high rates for sea freights because of the distance from major markets.

The Wamum and Idzan Creeks Prospect, located 79km W of Lae, Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea (PNG) was discovered by the exploration arm of Conzinc Riotinto of Australia Pty Ltd (CRAE). The detailed surface exploration and 11 vertical holes drilled by CRAE, combined with the recent work by Highlands Gold Limited, indicate the occurrence of porphyry copper-gold mineral- isation and associated alteration. The prospect occurs within andesitic volcanics of the Middle Miocene Langimar Beds. It is bounded by NE trending faults to the NW and SE. The alteration and mineral- isation is hosted in the andesitic tuffs adjacent to high level quartz diorite and hornblende diorite stocks. A NW trend to alteration and mineralisation is obvious in Wamum and Idzan Creeks. The main alteration type is propylitic with minor zones of potassic alteration. A late sericite-quartz-kaolinite-pyrite alteration overprinted the earlier alteration and mineralisation. Copper and gold mineralisation is related to a quartz-carbonate-chalcopyr-ite-pyrite (¦ bornite) vein stockwork and biotite ¦ K-feldspar alteration. The mineralisation system at Wamum and Idzan creeks is low in total sulphides. It is considered as a high- level fracture-controlled system with limited low grade Cu-Au mineralisation.

It is the purpose of this paper to produce some evidence on the accuracy to be expected from normal assay procedure using the usual first class equipment, and to examine the effect that many assaying inaccuracies have on reported metallurgical recoveries.Generally speaking, the evaluation of the gold content of a mineral ore sample by the fire assay method is a relatively simple process.A weighed quantity of finely ground ore is fused with suitable fiuxes including litharge and a reducing agent to give a button of lead and a quantity of slag. The shower of lead produced by the reduction of the added litharge collects the gold and silver present in the ore, concentrating the values into the lead button.The button of lead, after separation from the slag, is, on heating in an absorbent cupel in a current of air, reoxidised to litharge and absorbed into the cupel leaving a gold and silver bead in the cupel. This bead' is heated in a solution of nitric acid to dissolve the silver, leaving the gold undissolved to be dried and weighed. Knowing the original weight of the ore and the weight of the gold prill the value of the ore is easily calculated.Summarising1. Fusion Process.-Ore plus fiuxes give a slag plus lead button.2.
