Process control limitations have led to suboptimal performance of the crushing section of Sishen MineÆs Jig Plant. The performance of the PID (proportional-integral-derivative) controller implemented during commissioning was hampered by the relatively small buffer capacity between the crushers and screens. The inability to maintain the tertiary crushing chamber under full choke conditions lead to inefficient crushing and reduced crusher product cubicity.Model predictive control (MPC) was implemented in the tertiary crusher plant in May 2012 and resulted in a throughput improvement of six per cent in its first month. The controller was further optimised and indicated a throughput improvement of 16 per cent during on/off testing in July 2012. The throughput improvement is attributable to the finer crusher product resulting from operating the crusher under full choke conditions and controlled feed rate to the tertiary crusher plant screens. The next step is to couple the model predictive controller, automated gap control system and an economic optimiser to ensure maximised throughput and value from the resource.CITATION:Leeka, E K, 2013. Effective land-use planning requires accurate knowledge of mineral resource potential. Mineral companies during reconnaissance exploration, feasibility investigations and mine development also use this type of analysis. The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences is undertaking a two-year project reviewing the resource potential of the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Spatial prospectivity models have been developed as part of this resource assessment process, using computer based statistical pattern recognition techniques to delineate areas that are prospective for mineral deposits and to test deposit genesis models. Digital GIS data-sets of mineral occurrence were correlated against geology and exploration information. The distribution of mesotherrnal shear zone gold deposits in the Reefton Goldfield, were examined against geological data-sets from both the regional (QMAP) and local prospect-scale mapping. Weights of evidence analysis generated a correlation matrix that highlights relationships and degrees of association that might otherwise not normally be recognised.   Mesothermal shear zone gold deposits have strong positive spatial correlations with Greenland Group host rocks and areas with moderate to high quartz vein densities; moderate-strong positive correlation with regions <500 m from folds, with regions <600 m from faults and five to eight kilometres from granite contacts; moderate correlations with Ntrending fault and fold segments; and no/weak/poor correlations with fault intersections, fold-fault intersections, bends in regional structures and magnetic and radiometric data. The regional and prospect scale data sets give different results, with the more detailed prospect scale mapping giving generally better correlations. This emphasises the value of detailed geological mapping in the exploration process.   Maps generated by prospectivity modelling consistently highlighted areas of known mineralisation and generate targets where follow-up investigation is warranted. The prospectivity per unit area provides a measurable value that should change as new information comes to hand and, in addition to highlighting targets, can be used to measure the impact of increased exploration expenditure and assess the effectiveness of exploration investment.

One would anticipate that after 40 years in the mineral industry it would be simple to project the trends at least 5 or 10 years into the future. However the last 20 years, 1950-1970, have been so different in the mineral industry from the years 1930-1950 that I suggest only 20 years or so are relevant to any forward projection.Those, of us that have been about during the last 40 years find it hard to relate the two periods.The first with the depression, low base metal prices, attempts to revive the gold industry, very little export of minerals, and finally World War II and the recovery period.The second, a period of unimagined discoveries and the reappraisal of a wide variety of minerals and metals-iron, coal, bauxite, beach sands, manganese, oil and gas, and nickel, to name but a few.The second period started early in the 1950s and was triggered off by the search for oil in Australia.Rough Range No. 1 was an important milestone in our history because it initiated a series of speculations and the re-examination of much of our thinking about our mineral resources. It lead to the discovery of bauxite and the start of a flourishing aluminium industry.The realization of the extent of the iron ore resources was another, major step and the influx of overseas capital and competence started the large wave of development made effective by the Japanese markets.The momentum of the late 1950s has carried us to where we are today and will undoubtedly carry us further forward in the next few years.All this development in the mineral industry has come at a time when our pastoral industries have reached a difficult period. When conducting gold leach tests on free milling gold ores which method is the best, bottle rolls or the stirred beaker test? Recently, a client requested that gold leach tests be conducted using the stirred beaker methodology. When asked why, because the laboratory was set up to conduct tests using the bottle rolls technique the reply was that the stirred beaker leach test would replicate the plant more closely. Not wishing to upset the client, the instructions were followed. However, the opportunity was taken to complete additional tests so that the two leach procedures could be compared. Further, this comparison was completed on two different gold ores as well as a number of different grinding media types.This paper provides a description of the two laboratory techniques employed, and presents the results of these parallel tests. Interestingly, the assertion that the stirred beaker methodology more closely replicated plant performance was not validated. In fact, the results obtained using this procedure were noticeably different from those observed in the plant, with lower recoveries and significantly higher cyanide consumptions. The bottle rolls test however more adequately replicated plant performance in terms of recovery and cyanide consumption. A method for the detection and analysis of tin in cassiterite ores is discussed. An empirical relationship was established between the tin content of an ore sample and the percentage absorption that this sample produced in a Mossbauer experiment. The time taken to complete an assay with this method is much less than with any of the methods currently in use. The equipment can be adapted readily for use in the field.

The term geochemistry - chcmbtry' of the earth - is almost limitless in its implied subject, but of recent years a major trend of research in this field has been towards economic application in the search for mineral deposits, and in particular for those of some ofthe less common elements for which a demand now exists.Geochemistry is in a state of slow transition from a purely descriptive subject to a fundamental science concerned with the relationships that exist between the distribution of the elements in the earth's crust and the physical characteristics of the atoms of those elements. The progress achieved promises a set of basic principles which will relate the atomic characteristics of an element to the physico-chemical conditions that make for its dispersion or concentration. This means that, given a geological map of an areasufficiently detailed for the physico-chemical conditions existing in past geological eras to be deduced, there is the possibility that the relative distribution throughout that area of any element present, and its likely mode of occurrence, could be predicted from a consideration of its atomic characteristics.Since the atomic characteristics of the elements are becoming increasingly well defined by physical research, the attainment of this ideal of prediction depends upon:(a) the strengthening of geochemical theory; and(b) the development of petrological and mineralogical methods of assessing the conditions of temperature and pressure prevailing in geological formations at various stages in their history.The other prime requirement is a d.etailed geological map - a requirement that is all too often lacking.The fact that there has been very little "geochemical approach" to problems of economic geology in Australia should not be taken to mean that there is little point in trying to develop such an approach here in as active and as rigidly scientific a manner as possible. The degree of success that has attended the attempts so far made, to which reference is made below, suggests the reverse, particularly in view of the relatively slight cost involved if the investigations were properly organised on a centralised basis. There are three aspects of geochemistry that are directly applicable to the search for economic minerals.(a) The classic technique of the prospector can be made more sensitive and reliable by the use of modern equipment coupled with the application of geochemical theory to geological and structural data. The case of the rare alkali elements (see below) is givenhere as an illustration of the way in which the distribution of elements can be predicted from the first principles of geochemistry, thereby replacing the prospector's dependence on his "sixth sense" that enabled him to suggest that a certain area of formation was"favourable" for the occurrence of a certain type of mineral deposit.At its best, this sixth sense amounted to an almost subconscious correlation of all relevant associations and typical occurrences of the particular mineral experienced by the prospector during his...

E. W. Stutchbury (Internationa~ Oombustion Aust. Ltd.) : Mr. Callcott made particular mention in his paper of erosion in primary air fans which are placed after the mill discharge. He adds that subsequent reduction in plant performance and resulting increased maintenance costs occur. It is generally assumed that this statement is substantially correct as the fan handles the complete output from the mill, but with modern materials, reduction in performance and subsequent .maintenance are not now a problem. This consideration of handling the pulverised coal in the fan is more than offset by the advantage of operating the mill under suction which results in cleaner operating conditions, simpler feeder arrangements and elimination of complicated seals on the mill.and feeder unit. The case study has identified and characterised additional subsidence arising from longwall mining above or under existing longwall goaf. It suggests that the magnitude, mechanisms and prediction methods for such additional subsidence are different between the two mining configurations. This paper presents a proposed method to predict maximum vertical subsidence due to longwall mining under existing longwall goaf. It suggests that, unless different results from further new cases become available, the findings presented in this article, including the aforementioned prediction method, be applicable to the majority of sites in New South Wales, where multi-seam longwall mining is to take place. This article also presents an important concept of 'overburden modification' due to multi-seam mining. A causal relationship between the above-mentioned additional subsidence and 'overburden modification' has been identified as a result of the case studies. Further investigations into the physical processes that cause such overburden modification will be fundamental to the understanding and management of multi-seam subsidence.

The area around Big Bell was actively explored and sporadically mined for gold from 1904 onwards. The lease was named Big Bell in 1913. The property became established as a major mining centre with the development of the Big Bell underground mine in 1936. Mining operations commenced in late 1937 and ceased in January 1955, after milling 5.56 million tonnes of ore and producing nearly 21 tonnes of gold. In 1969 Australian Consolidated Minerals Ltd (A.C.M.) acquired the deposit then explored it alone and in joint venture until the current joint venture agreement with a subsidiary of Placer Pacific Limited (PPL) was negotiated in 1984. Following exploration and evaluation of near surface mineralisation, and a reassessment of the remnant pillars underground, the concept of a large open pit in conjunction with an underground mine evolved. The feasibility study was completed in October 1987, and the decision to go ahead was formally announced on 2nd December 1987. Placer Dome Technical Services Ltd were contracted to be the Project Managers, commencing construction on site early in January 1988 and handing the plant over to the operators 13 months later. The capital cost of the project at handover was estimated to be $133 million. The operating team commenced pre-production stripping of the open pit on 1st May 1988. By 31st January 1989 almost 16.0 million tonnes had been stripped and 350,000 tonnes of ore stockpiled.

AngloGold Ashanti Ltd nominated Sunrise Dam Gold Mine as a case study via their involvement with the long-running Australian Mineral Industry Research Association (AMIRA) International P9P research program (AMIRA, 2015) . A group of researchers from the Global Comminution Collaborative (GCC) conducted a comminution circuit survey and review together with a large group of graduate metallurgists, senior metallurgists and operators. Fundamental and applied research understanding was used to identify productivity and efficiency improvements around the crushing and grinding circuits. The limitations of current scientific knowledge were identified through this process and this will allow future research to be more focussed on what is required by industry.The comminution circuit at Sunrise Dam comprises three stages of crushing followed by two stages of ball milling. The secondary crusher and primary ball mill classification were identified as the primary limitations of the circuit. The secondary crusher was found to be underperforming through overall equipment efficiency (OEE) analysis and an improved chamber design was identified by Chalmers University. This improved design will promote higher power utilisation, choke feeding and a finer crushed product for the milling circuit. The primary ball mill product is classified by a combination of a trommel, 3 sieve bends and a hydrocyclone. The combination of poor classification and coarse, competent feed led to a situation where the primary mill was overfilled with rocks, reducing grinding rate due to cushioning of impact. The essential features of the zinc concentrate roasting installation at the Risdon Works by the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Ltd. are given.The problem of maintenance of ignition in down-draught zinc concentrate flash roasters is discussed, and a solution offered.A successful and economical method of using by-product oxygen for raising the roasting efficiency of hearth roasters is described. Three methods of utilizing oxygen for the same purpose in flash roasting are detailed, and their relative merit, considered.INTRODUCTIONThe zinc sulphide concentrate used at the Risdon Works is roasted autogenously for removal of sulphur in two hearth roasters, and four flash roasters. The hearth roasters are of modified Skinner type with eleven hearths. They were designed, and are used, for roasting mixtures of relatively low sulphide content. Their design and operation have been described elsewhere (Forster, 1949).The flash roasters are down-draughted furnaces with cross-section and rabbling equipment based on the hearth roaster design, and the process is similar to that developed by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Ltd. (Cominco) at Trail, B.C. (Stimmel, Hannay, and McBean, 1936).These furnaces are 20 ft. in diameter. They have three drying hearths through which hot gas is drawn from the combustion chamber by the burner fan. The combustion chamber is 2'1 ft. high above the collecting hearth (27 ft. in No. 4 unit), and the discharge hearth below it is 6 ft. high, so that a large gas offtake is possible. Isa): I found many ideas to interest me in Haddon King's paper "Notes on Ore Occurrences in Highly Metamorphosed Precambrian Rocks" (Stillwell Anniversary Volume).At Mount Isa I have not been happy about some of the longstanding appreciations of the geological evidence as fresh data accumulated, and as more and more knowledge has been building up outside Mount Isa in recent years of sedimentary deposition of sulphides.Accordingly, I organized a small section of the Geological Department at Mount Isa at the beginning of 1958 under Senior Geologist, W. J. Murray to reappraise our geological record and investigate old interpretations and new ones that arise. The work is expected to take several years to complete, but it is hoped that sufficient will be done before then to permit the most plausible story on the ore genesis to be chosen. In the meantime, W. J. Murray has proposed, in a Company Report, that the.epigenetic features of the silver,lead-zinc deposits, which are essentially conformable with the shales, could have resulted from remobilized syngenetic deposits.Haddon King, on p. 159; has listed six assumptions that are required by a magmatic-hydrothermal theory of, origin for conformable deposits. THE art of mine surveying has made very great progress in recent years, and is still advancing, perhaps faster than any other branch of surveying. The scope of the mine surveyor's duties has greatly increased, his instruments and methods have improved, the responsibility of his position is greater, and the end is not yet in sight.It might be supposed that such a steadily growing subject would have an adequate literature, but this is by no means the case and outsiders commonly judge mine surveyors by their text-books. Hardly any condemnation can be too strong for most of these books. The English books truckle to the antiquated and crude methods apparently still in use in England, and thereby largely aid in perpetuating them; they commonly in illustrative examples give the distances in fathoms, feet, and inches; they spend page after page discoursing on instruments that should have been forgotten long ago; they try to antagonize theory and practice by detailing such calculations as that a certain vein will contain 2,003.907 pounds of galena per square fathom, and then reduce this amazing quantity to hundredweights, quarters, and pounds. Nothing can be more unscientific, or, for that matter, less businesslike, than unwarranted assumptions of accuracy; it is, perhaps, the greatest curse of applied science. Here we have a calculation to thethousandth part of a pound, when there is probably an unavoidable error of two hundred pounds. The ocean floor is increasingly being discussed in terms of its resource potential. New discoveries, improved knowledge and access to unexplored areas of the deep sea and continental shelf are some factors contributing to a renewed interest in the seafloor exploration and mining industry. The industry has been referred to as the ænext minerals frontierÆ. To date, much of the research has focused on proving economic and technical viability of the industry, with environmental issues addressed locally. However, there is limited research internationally, and none known in Australia that considers the social viability of the industry, addressing issues such as regulatory contexts, international precedence and public acceptability. Does the nascent seafloor exploration and mining industry have a social license to operate? Does it have support amongst the wider community? If not, why not? The Wealth from Oceans National Research Flagship explored these questions by scoping the social issues that would surround an expansion. Two desktop studies provide insight into the current level of activity in seafloor exploration and mining, recent developments and the regulatory regimes on which the industry is based. One study focused on the situation in Australia, while the other was internationally focused. A series of workshops were held with key stakeholders from government agencies, industry and other interested parties, such as environmental groups and the fisheries industry. These workshops identified and explored the different stakeholdersÆ perceptions of the benefits, concerns, opportunities and key questions associated with an expansion of the seafloor mining industry. The desktop studies revealed that Australia is one of only a few countries with legislation specific to seafloor exploration and mining. Nevertheless, barriers to licence approval exist because of lack of precedent in applying this legislation. Consequently, the decision process can be vulnerable to political issues and subjective judgements. The outcomes from the stakeholder workshops suggest this inconsistency may be influenced by the high levels of concern and uncertainty over environmental impacts. Uncertainty over environmental impacts can influence the acceptability of an environmental impact assessment (EIA) and also mean the perception of risk is variable. Overall, this research suggests that the future of the seafloor exploration and mining industry will be highly dependent on AustraliaÆs ability to:improve the knowledge-base underpinning the regulatory regime,generate open and transparent communications between stakeholders, andimprove the understanding of policy and regulatory processes.

Samples of a refractory copper ore were examined to test their response to segregation roasting, flotation, and acetonitrile leaching. Recoveries in the segregation roasting stage were between 60 and 100 per cent, while flotation recoveries varied between 60 and 85 per cent in cleaner concentrates assaying 25-40 per cent copper.The fraction of the copper which could be leached from the concentrate by an acetonitrile/sulphuric acid/cupric ion leach solution varied from 16 to 97 per cent, the lower recoveries being correlated with the presence of sulphide in the concentrate.
