Safety and stability of underground mine openings, coal pillars and water dams in the near vicinity of operating surface mines are endangered from excessive blast induced vibrations. This paper deals with the investigations carried out in four coal mines. Simultaneous measurements at equal distances from the source indicated higher level of vibration on the surface than those produced in the underground workings. The values of peak particle velocity (PPV) measured on coal pillars, body of water dam were lower than those measured on roof and junctions of the roadways. The parting of coal (3-4.5 m) between two sections vibrated with higher PPV compared to the roof of top section and floor of bottom section. In one case the influence of total charge fired in a round was significant in generation of vibration compared to the maximum charge/delay where monitoring was done vertically below the source.

Moist Adiabatic Benchmark (MAB) and R70 testing have been applied to core samples of a multiple seam sequence from a borehole at the Doyles Creek Project. The coal samples range in rank from high volatile B bituminous to high volatile A bituminous, with a general increase in coal rank as depth increases in the borehole. The intrinsic coal reactivity to oxygen decreases with coal rank as indicated by the R70 values. The time taken to reach thermal runaway shown by the MAB testing however is strongly modified by the interaction between the intrinsic coal reactivity, the moisture content of the coal and the retained gas content of the coal. This is clearly demonstrated by the lowermost seam of the sequence. The MAB test for coal from the Whynot Seam took 20 days to go to thermal runaway, which projects to heating issues taking between eight to 12 months to occur for loosely piled coal found in coal roof falls or a longwall goaf and uncompacted stockpiles, assuming sufficient air is available for coal oxidation. Carrapateena is a copper-gold deposit hosted in a brecciated granite complex, located 500km North of Adelaide, South Australia. The deposit is being mined using the Sub Level Caving (SLC) Mining method at a rate of 4.25 MTPA. The Carrapateena SLC construction was completed in Q4 2019, with ramp up to a mine production rate of 4.25 MTPA completed within 12 months; ~ 6 months earlier than originally planned (OZ Minerals, 2020b). Traditional SLC designs have had issues with safety interactions on production levels, namely at the perimeter drive, as well as presented challenges for the application of automation due to frequency of activity required to achieve ring turnover rates. Safety in design provides an opportunity to learn from experience at recent modern SLC operations and by considering hazards early in the design process minimise exposure and improve safety, productivity and automation of mining activity. This paper discusses the work carried out during the Carrapateena feasibility study and optimised during project execution; to update the SLC production level mine design, with a layout known as the Carrapateena Crows Foot Level Layout. This paper focuses on: • An introduction to the Carrapateena Operation and mine plan. • An overview and historical challenges of traditional level layout. • An introduction to the Carrapateena Crows Foot level layout, including production level design parameters as well as development metres and productivity comparisons. • Outlines the benefits of the Crows Foot design for safety in design of SLC operations. Provides a roadmap for improved production efficiency, level operational philosophy and the application of automation within the SLC.

Downhole Assay tools are a geophysical method to collect an instigated response from the material surrounding a drill hole and deliver a multielement proxy-assay. They were first tested in the Pilbara at the turn of this century, however since 2011 they have seen a more focused testing and implementation regime with multiple companies across multiple Pilbara mine sites. The increase in the volume of data has led to advances in the measurements and significant improvements to the efficiency of the calibration process. Pulsed Fast and Thermal Neutron Activation Analysis (PFTNA) downhole assay tools collect gamma photon spectra which are characteristic of elemental signatures. One of the key components of the technique is calibrating the spectral signatures to lab assays. Each tool is slightly different due to the organic nature of the crystal detector and therefore responds slightly differently. Environment and hole conditions as well as ore characteristics are among other external influencing factors. Thus, a unique calibration is required for each tool. In addition, not all elements are measured directly, but some are actually characterised by proxy, meaning that if the signal-to-noise ratio for an element is small, it may be easier to identify the mineral or geology in which that element is found and thus infer the concentration of the element. These proxies may differ for each site or geology type within a site. There is a large advantage to build a unique calibration per tool at each site rather than a universal one to be used across the whole province. This then delivers the accuracy and precision of measurements that mining companies require for modern operations. Early work with the tool required several thousand metres of calibration data and several weeks of analysis to build each calibration. This process has now been streamlined to significantly reduce the amount of data required and the analysis time to make it much easier to introduce new tools to a site with an existing model or to create new models. This paper details the calibration process, illustrating the increasing accuracy of the models as training data are acquired as well as the methods for transferring a calibration from one tool to another.

This paper looks at the design of the Bentayga raisebore with subsequent back analysis using a LiDAR survey. A search for LiDAR raisebore assessment publications shows little work has been done on this subject. The paper examines the empirical design and RS2 modelling assessment with the bored condition. The high resolution of the LiDAR enabled mapping of weak structures that were located on the geotechnical investigation hole the orientations of which could not be determined. In addition, the scan showed were water ingress was occurring, potential stress overbreak and structural controls on stability. The LiDAR results were able to confirm no additional support work such as a shotcrete liner is necessary. The LiDAR results have been analysed in one metre increments as volume of overbreak against the empirical stability criteria (McCracken & Stacey 1989). The future use of LiDAR mapping over a range of rock mass conditions will provide quantification of the established empirical assessment improving its reliability. It is also a useful and accurate tool to monitor long term stability of a raisebore due to stress change or ore pass due to wear.

The Kiirunavaara mine is a large-scale (28 Mt/a) iron ore mine located in northern Sweden. The mine is owned and operated by Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag (LKAB) using sublevel caving (SLC). The SLC area underlies an open pit decommissioned in the 1950s, the current main SLC haulage level is situated at an depth of 1100 m. The main orebody dips 60 degrees to the east with a distinct boundary defining the hanging wall to the east and footwall to the west. Since the 1980s damage has been observed both in the footwall rock mass as well as on the footwall crest of the open pit. Recent investigations indicate that the underground footwall damage is primarily controlled by large-scale slope failure mechanisms. Structurally controlled near-vertical planar shear failures in the upper footwall appear to be driven or facilitated by a step-path like curved shear failure situated in a zone starting ca 250 m, and intersecting the SLC about 100 m above the active mining level. To confirm this failure evolution a pilot underground measuring system has been designed and installed to monitor the expected rock mass displacements indicated by numerical models based on the above mechanisms. The systems consists of 50 m time domain reflectometry (TDR) coaxial cables installed in the footwall both across and away from an estimated damage extent boundary to monitor shear movements along natural joint surfaces. The TDR installation is combined with long extensometers to facilitate differentiation between diffuse shear and rock mass normal expansion. Additionally, a low-tech system of tape extensometer lines are installed in drifts and stopes running perpendicular to the ore strike to monitor horizontal displacements in the infrastructure as the footwall ‘slope’ loses confinement during mining advance when the mined out areas are replaced by caved rock from the hanging wall.CITATION:Svartsjaern, M, Saiang, D and Mäkitaavola, K, 2016. In the 1990s round flotation tanks were introduced as a result of the lower fabrication costs for larger cells. It was soon observed that round tanks held a number of further advantages over the traditional rectangular cells, such as better hydrodynamics, lower costs and reduced footprint per unit volume.In the last twenty years flotation cell sizes have increased almost exponentially and designs of 250 to 300m3 are a well established standard with plans for full scale pilot installations of 500m3. The option to install these large cells gives flexibility in circuit arrangements and allows efficient and economic matching of flotation lines with modern mill designs. The benefits of scale up are well known with reduced numbers of cells required, lower power costs per unit volume, etc. These benefits will be briefly reviewed with specific reference to the installation of 300m3 to 350m3 flotation cells at the Copperton Concentrator of Kennecott Copper in Utah, USA.The sophisticated techniques required to model these ‘supercells’ have led to a critical review of the fundamentals of flotation science and engineering. In addition to outlining the advantages of large flotation cells, this paper will review the science which supports, and occasionally challenges, the ongoing trend to larger flotation cells.

The Rocklands copper project is a multilode, iron oxide copper gold (IOCG) + cobalt mineralised system located in the Eastern Fold Belt of the Mt Isa Inlier. Rocklands orebodies cover a range of oxidation zones from oxide, to supergene and primary. Each zone contains different economic minerals of interest. The supergene zones contain significant amounts of native copper and the primary zones are dominated by chalcopyrite. The juxtaposition of these oxidation zones and minerals make it an interesting mineralisation system.Current mine production sampling collects a nominal 3 kg drill chip sample from a 1 m composite, RC drilled interval. A site specific sampling procedure was needed to quantify introduced sampling error when taking grade control samples. Due to oxidation and mineralogical variation in ore zones we needed to develop a practically achievable sampling methodology that ensures minimum sample mass and sample error requirements are achieved to ensure ‘representative’ samples for all ore types.These issues are planned to be resolved using an experimentally derived method using principles from the Theory of Sampling. This method uses an experimental calibration of parameters K and a for Gy’s fundamental sampling error formula using a modified 32-piece sampling tree experiment to compile sampling nomograms for the primary and supergene ores. This paper demonstrates the process undertaken to improve the quality and standard of existing mine production sampling procedures at the Rocklands operation.Results indicate a sample mass of 5 kg for RC drill chips is appropriate for both the primary and supergene ores to achieve a fundamental error below 0.01 or 10 per cent relative error, which is slightly higher than the existing sampling protocol of 3 kg. An additional experiment is recommended to compile sampling nomograms using the exact laboratory comminution and mass reduction stage information to assess the use of a 3 kg sample. The results also indicate no changes are required to existing sampling protocols when sampling RC drill chips in primary and supergene ore at Rocklands.Sampling nomogram results also provide a useful ‘rule of thumb’ reference guide to other mining and exploration companies to help understand minimum sample mass requirements and sampling error during exploration drilling, resource evaluation and mining production stages when targeting similar IOCG mineralised systems. A sample mass of 5 kg is recommended when RC drilling similarly IOCG mineralised prospects and deposits in the Cloncurry area. Future test work is recommended when additional open cuts become active as well as including resource drilling drill core to provide better three-dimensional sample representivity.CITATION:Hawtin, M G, 2017. Geomembranes selected for various applications often start with considering target properties developed by industry organisations such as Geosynthetic Research Institute (GRI), and test methods developed by ASTM and other Standards organisations The geomembrane types are typically, initially selected based on manufacturers recommendations and chemical resistance data from the manufacturer or industry knowledge. Geomembranes considered for this project included materials with material properties that exceeded the minimum target values of various test methods. The difficulty is in selecting which parameters are most important for a particular application and also what service life can be expected for the geomembrane under various chemical and environmental exposure conditions. Accelerated aging testing of candidate geomembranes in simulated exposure conditions can be useful to select the preferred geomembrane and predict the service life of the geomembrane under different exposure conditions. The exposure conditions of immersion in acidic tailings liquor, splash zone and freeboard zone were considered for evaporation ponds on a site with significant heat and UV radiation. Candidate geomembranes considered a range of different types of polyethylene liners. The results of the accelerated aging testing have allowed the selection of the geomembrane for the range of exposure conditions and evaluation of the expected service life of the geomembrane.

Ausmelt is supplying commercial quantities of an alkyl hydroxamate flotation collector AM28 for flotation of oxide and supergene base metal ores and tailings. AM28 is a non-hazardous product used as a ten per cent to 50 per cent solution in dilute potassium hydroxide. It is a selective flotation collector for oxide or oxidised base metal minerals and replaces conventional sulfidisation for oxide mineral flotation. At Radio Hill, the AM28 is used in conjunction with traditional sulfide collectors, which allows simultaneous flotation of oxide and sulfide copper minerals. The Fox Resources Radio Hill copper concentrator near Karratha, Western Australia, is currently configured to treat supergene copper ore sourced from the West Whundo open pit. This Archean VMS type copper deposit has been deformed and remobilised with uplift, erosion and weathering to form a significant supergene zone. The sulfide copper minerals present in the upper zone are digenite and chalcocite with lesser chalcopyrite and covellite. Oxide copper minerals present include cuprite, with lesser malachite and azurite. Gangue minerals include quartz, talc and chlorite. Plant trials at Radio Hill are reported for supergene West Whundo ore, where the AM28 was stage added into the circuit at nominally 80 g/t. Plant data over three months shows the copper recovery increased consistently from around 50 - 60 per cent to above 70 per cent when AM28 was added. This has been proven statistically. The grade of the concentrate was consistent with and without AM28, at nominally 22 - 24 per cent copper.

Northparkes is located 27 km north of the township of Parkes in central New South Wales, Australia. The operations consist of underground block cave mines and an ore processing plant that produces high-grade copper and gold concentrate. Production is currently sourced from the E48 Lift 1 block cave mine and open cut stockpiles. Mining commenced at Northparkes in 1994 as an open cut operation. Underground block cave mining began in 1997. Northparkes was the first mine in Australia to use the highly efficient block cave mining method, which relies on gravity and natural rock stresses to fragment the ore.The occurrence of air blasts is one of the principal mining hazards in block caving operations between the time of first undercutting and breakthrough of the cave to surface. As such, it needs to be managed continuously, and risk assessments need to be reviewed on a regular basis for applicability to changing conditions. Unfortunately, there is little literature on how to practically approach air blast risk assessments in a way that can be incorporated in the day-to-day operation of a mine. Previous methods of assessing air blast risk were tedious and results were often unrepeatable.With the extension of the E48 Lift 1 extraction level, it was necessary to assess the air blast risk for the extension drives and develop operational guidelines for production from the extension. A review of the methodology for assessing air blast risks revealed substantial improvement opportunities.This paper outlines the principles used for air blast risk assessments at Northparkes Mines and the methodology employed to achieve efficient, repeatable and auditable results.CITATION:Vejrazka, C, 2016. During operations, mining and metallurgical processes may generate effluents such as tailings water, acid mine drainage (AMD) and seepage and process acid streams. Depending on the type of ore and the metallurgical process, these effluents may contain one or more toxic compounds (eg acidity or alkalinity, cyanide, ammonia and/or nitrate, heavy metals, total suspended solids (TSS), sulfate) in elevated concentrations requiring treatment before their discharge to the environment or recycle/reuse in the process. Natural oxidation of sulfide minerals present in mining wastes (eg tailings and waste rock) at mining sites may generate AMD, which is characterised as a low pH, high acidity effluent containing heavy metals and sulfate. If generation of AMD cannot be controlled and/or prevented, AMD needs to be collected and treated for neutralisation of acidity and reduction of metals and TSS to meet regulated water quality standards. It is important to note that some of these compounds may persist in run-off from mine sites, even after the mine and processing facilities are decommissioned. Treatment of mining and metallurgical process effluents can be accomplished by means of various physical, chemical and/or biological methods. The mode of process application may vary from the use of either specifically designed, controlled and automated facilities or passive systems. Lime neutralisation and precipitation is the most common method used in the mining industry to treat AMD. To reduce the problems associated with disposal and long-term storage of the resulting sludge, the use of a high-density sludge process (HDS) has become a preferred option. The use of other chemical reagents, waste or by-products from other industries, and biological sulfate reduction methods can also be considered as viable options for site-specific situations. Recently, several passive treatment systems have been designed and successfully operated, even in the cold North American climate. This paper will discuss available options and provide insights for selecting a suitable method for a given situation using case studies from projects conducted by Golder Associates around the world over the last decade.

At 14 per cent, the representation of women working in the mining industry is the lowest among primary industry categories in Canada. Despite an increase in research and industry commitment to advance and retain women in the mining industry, the gender gap in mining organisations persists.This paper is based upon a recent Canadian survey of 163 highly qualified women (HQW) working in the mining sector. For the purpose of this research, HQW were defined as women with a BachelorÆs degree or higher. This research sought to identify career progression and retention patterns of women who in theory have the educational qualifications to advance into positions of leadership in mining operations. We considered why womenÆs advancement in mining organisations has stalled; examined the career development pathways of HQW; and investigated the interactions of mining workplace culture on HQWÆs career development and retention within the Canadian mining industry. Results?indicated two distinct career pathway trends for HQW. æThe specialistÆ; a career characterised by multiple professional scientific and technical positions, and æthe corporateÆ; a career characterised by professional administrative roles and roles in mid-level management. It was found that neither æcorporatesÆ nor æspecialistsÆ systematically progressed into senior management and executive roles. These findings suggest that HQWÆs careers in mining are stalled, despite a strong indication by respondents of interest in their professional career advancement. With regards to?workplace?culture, respondents indicated that blatant forms of gender discrim-ination have been reduced in mining workplaces; however, exclusion from informal networks, implicit bias and subtler forms of workplace discrimination persist. Consistent with previous mining sector research, improving work-life balance, work flexibility and mentorship were found as key drivers for HQW to advance and remain in the industry.CITATION:Hughes, C, Scoble, M and Roberts, M, 2012. Through an ambitious but relatively low-cost program of marine fieldwork, laboratory investigations and technology-transfer and training activities, three Indonesia-Australia-led marine expeditions were undertaken aboard KR Baruna Jaya VIII between 2001 and 2003. These IASSHA (Indonesia-Australia Survey for Submarine Hydrothermal Activity) cruises have sought to discover and investigate a variety of potential ore forming hydrothermal systems in a range of tectonic settings. All cruises have been successful, both scientifically and from the point of view of training, creation of capabilities and capacity building for such research in Indonesia. Over 60 scientists and technicians from Indonesian and Australian institutions and agencies have been involved. Three new sites and a possible fourth site of hydrothermal activity were discovered in the Sangihe arc in northern Sulawesi. Surveys in the Tomini basin tested a hypothesis based on previous data which suggested this might be an isolated anoxic, brine-filled basin over 2000 m deep where igneous heat sources existed to generate hydrothermal mineralisation. The bay, however, was found to be open to adjacent deep ocean circulation, and there was no evidence of massive base metal sulfides. Subdued evidence of hydrothermal activity was found in the Sunda Strait associated with the famous Krakatau volcano and the extension of the seismically active Semangko Fault. The BANDAMIN program (Indonesia-Germany) covered a portion of the Banda arc in eastern Indonesia, and also found evidence of recent hydrothermal activity and epithermal sulfide mineralisation.

Admixture use in cement products is commonplace in the construction and mining industries. Many Australian mines have an operational concrete batch plant and stock hydration control and water reducing admixtures. The benefits of admixture use, especially in shotcrete is understood and well documented. Cemented rock fill (CRF) is used to fill stope voids and create stable vertical and undercut surfaces at some Australian mines. These mines generally mix rock fill with a slurry of cement and water without the use of admixtures. Recently published work on optimisation of CRF mixes has mainly focused on the strength increases associated with changes to the mix grading proportions by the addition of fines, but not focusing on the potential benefits of admixture use. Admixture use in CRF may be the simplest CRF optimisation method, as the admixtures will often be added by the push of a button at the batch plant. A CRF testing program was undertaken to test the benefits of admixture use in terms of strength gain, using hydration control additives (HCA) and high range water reducer (HRWR) admixtures. Rock fill gradings were strictly controlled in the test process to allow clear definition of the difference admixtures provide in compression at 28 days. The testing results define admixture associated strength gains in a 6 per cent general purpose (GP) cement by dry weight CRF mix (131 kg of cement/m3). Costings have been developed to allow a mine operator to understand the cost benefits of admixture use in CRF due to reduced operating costs. Operational efficiency advances and a suggested admixture implementation plan for CRF optimisation is offered.

In focusing on open pit mine scheduling, one of the biggest areas that a mining engineer can add value is in the area of cut-off grade optimisation. It is not atypical to add up to an extra 20 per cent in value by bringing forward higher-grade ore and deferring costs into the future.There are many techniques available to maximise net present value (NPV) when applied to open pit mine scheduling. That in itself raises the question of why so many of these techniques exist. The short answer is that none of these techniques are robust. Every time the problem changes, the algorithms also have to change.Instead of trying to make a problem fit the constraints of an existing technique, there is much to be said for usefully hybridising different approaches. This paper describes an innovative approach where evolutionary algorithms are combined with both local search and linear programming. The goal is maximising NPV through optimisation of cut-off grade policy and extraction sequence for an open pit mine. The occurrence and deportment of manganese in a number of ferromanganese and Mn-bearing iron ore samples from supergene-upgraded deposits, as well as from magnetite banded iron formation (BIF) and magnetite skarn deposits, was characterised in order to provide a basis for improved understanding of the processing characteristics of different ore types and investigate the potential for development of a robust geometallurgical classification for Mn-oxide ores. An understanding of the Mn mineralogy in mixed Fe-Mn deposits is necessary to inform any attempt to separate the Fe and Mn during beneficiation and to understand and predict the behaviour of lump and fine ore products during processing.A suite of analytical techniques was utilised, including hand sorting of lump ore particles, optical microscopy, X-ray fluorescence (XRF)/inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) chemistry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and gas and solid phase pycnometry, in order to elucidate manganese mineralogy, mineral chemistry and mineral textures. Manganomelane group minerals (eg cryptomelane, hollandite), pyrolusite and lithiophorite were the most common manganese oxides in the samples examined. From the microprobe work, there was evidence of probable substitution of Mn, as well as Al and Si, into the structures of goethite and hematite. Manganomelane minerals were often intimately associated with goethite, in particular, and a clarification of this association and the associated Si and Al impurities is fundamental for improved understanding of beneficiation and sintering behaviour of Mn-oxide ores. Due to the poor or very fine crystallinity of some supergene manganese deposits and of some Mn oxide minerals, in particular the extent of overlapping peaks and their variable mineral chemistry, XRD was a problematic technique to equivocally determine Mn mineralogy.For lower-grade, earthy, poorly microcrystalline ores the mineralogical and textural association between mixed Mn, Fe and Al (¦ Si) phases was also critical. The deportment and potential separation of these elements in these deposits, especially Al, was complex, as they were characterised by forms of æhydrousÆ cryptomelane with higher levels of Fe-Al-Si substitution, as well as intimate intergrowths of ochreous-earthy goethite (probably aluminous in part) with cryptomelane, lithiophorite and/or kaolinite.Trace amounts of alkali elements in ferromanganese deposits were considered likely to be preferentially structurally associated with Mn oxides, while lateritic deposits with significant amounts of lithiophorite could contain elevated levels of deleterious impurities; Co and Ni in particular.A combination of solid and gas phase pycnometry proved to be a useful technique for broadly discriminating hematitic, goethitic and mixed Mn oxide-goethite lump particles based upon differences in their envelope and apparent densities. Based upon these preliminary results and ongoing Raman spectroscopy work on manganese deposits sensu stricto, Raman spectroscopy is a technique considered to have promise during targeted research to better link the optical and compositional properties of ferromanganese ore particles. CT-scan (computed tomography scan) analysis could also be combined with Raman spectroscopy and pycnometry to link mineral composition, mineral texture, ore particle textures and particle porosity/permeability to the high-temperature processing behaviour of lump and fines products.CITATION:Peterson, M J, Hapugoda, S, Manuel, J R, Donskoi, E and Poliakov, A, 2013.
