Thermal method of diagnostic as a nondestructive monitoring is based on data logging of infrared radiation from heated surface or from the associated thermal field. Monitoring of gearcases and motors hidden faults, such as, bearing degradation (deep-seated wears and tears, fretting wear, spalling and jamming solids of revolution) is closely related to high variations in temperature. The use of portable thermal imaging devices provides considerable advantages due to: easy remote access to the unit under test even when it is operating; minimum time required to obtain information and an opportunity for a real-time diagnosis of the tested subject's condition.

At Neavesville gold-silver (electrum) mineralisation occurs in steeply-dipping zones of intense fracturing, brecciation and quartz veining within rhyolitic pyroclastics, carbohaceous shales and andesites. Hydrothermal alteration extends over an area of greater than 3 by 1.5 km. In rhyolitic tuffs, highly silicified zones containing quartz-adularia-illite assemblages are flanked by less silicified assemblages composed of albite, illite-montmorillonite and chlorite. The mineralogy and sequence of alteration are comparable with the alteration zones which envelop the steam-producing fissures of the active Wairakei and Broadlands geothermal fields. Primary fluid inclusions in quartz from five fissure veins in the Neavesville field show maximum homogenisation temperatures ranging from 220 - 260¦C and salinities of 0.0 - 1.1 wt per cent NaCl equivalent, which cover a similar range to actual measured temperatures and salinities in geothermal fluids at Wairakei and Broadlands. The age of the rhyolitic pyroclastics and related alteration and mineralisation is probably Pliocene and Neavesville therefore represents a fossil geothermal system. The intensely fractured zones containing the gold-silver mineralisation were probably produced by hydraulic fracturing generated by accumulation under pressure of hydrothermal fluid in blind fault zones. Study of fluid inclusions indicates that hydrothermal quartz associated with electrum was deposited under boiling conditions. High grade electrum mineralisation at Graces workings appears to be localised by reaction of hydrothermal fluid with sedimentary marcasite in black shale.

Self-cleaning fluidised bed heat exchangers have demonstrated unparalleled performance internationally for the implementation of indirect heat transfer in severely fouling fluid environments. Recent advances in equipment design have increased the scope of application to include indirect heat transfer in slurry environments, including fouling, scaling and viscous slurries. The ingenious configuration of recirculated cleaning particles through the tubes of vertical shell and tube heat exchangers provides the ability to solve heat transfer problems that arise as a consequence of tube-side fouling during indirect heat transfer to process fluids or slurries. In most cases, the cleaning particles consist of chopped metal wire, however other process-specific materials may be used.

Platinum-group minerals (PGM) are recorded from a number of localities along theWaiau River, western Southland, and the south coast of the South Island, New Zealand. At each locality, small amounts of PGMs were recovered as by-products of historical gold mining operations. During the period 1890-1950 an estimated 1000-2000 oz. of æplatinumÆ were recovered from the region, the only area within New Zealand where PGM have been commercially exploited. The PGM suite of southern New Zealand consists of Pt-Fe alloys, IPGE (iridium subgroup, platinum-group elements) alloys, sperrylite (PtAs2), cooperite (PtS) and braggite ((Pt,Pd)S). The composition of Pt-Fe alloy exhibits considerable variation and two compositional populations are recognised. Some Pt-Fe alloy grains are chemically zoned. Iridium is the most abundant IPGE alloy phase and often contains considerable Pt, in contrast to osmium and ruthenium alloys. Cooperite and braggite grains are characterised by extremely low concentrations of Ni.   Exsolution of osmium and iridium from Pt-Fe alloy and Pt-Fe alloy from iridium is observed Several PGM host mineral inclusions which vary from single to poly-phase, display rounded to equant outlines and range in diameter from greater than 100 ¦m to less than 5 ¦m. Olivine and Ni-sulphide inclusions are only present within IPGE alloys. Pt-Fe alloy, cooperite, braggite and sperrylite host Cu-Fe sulphides, a wide variety of PGM, clinopyroxene, amphibole, magnetite and plagioclase within inclusions. Sperrylite also hosts Pd bismuthiotellurides, gold and several potassium-rich silicate phases. Similarities in inclusion phases and mineral chemistry from several localities suggest that the PGM are derived from a single (as yet unidentified), probably calc-alkaline magmatic source. This source is situated somewhere along the margins of the western Southland sedimentary basin where PGM liberated by erosion are transported down the Waiau River and dispersed eastwards along the coast by strong longshore currents.

Sulphur-rich minerals such as authigenic pyrite (FeS2) are commonly associated with coal mine workings. Metallic elements such as arsenic (As), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) are enriched in the pyrite relative to their concentrations in the surrounding environment. Exposure of pyrite and coal to air and water results in a series of oxidation and hydrolysis reactions that are commonly catalysed by species of Thiobacillus bacteria. These reactions lead to a lowering of the pH in the drainage waters (acid mine drainage, AMD) and subsequent mobilisation of trace metals in environmentally significant concentrations. This study assesses the spatial distribution of As, Zn and Cu concentration in water in relation to pH and Eh (redox potential) downstream from the tailings at the Wangaloa opencast lignite mine in southeast Otago. This mine was abandoned in the late 1980s due to a decrease in the economic viability of mining the lignite. The area is showing the characteristic symptoms of AMD, which is detrimental to the health of several Pinus radiate growing on some of the tailings. The pH of the drainage waters can get as low as 2, and in some instances, lower, but it returns to near neutral (pH 6.5) up to 200 metres down stream from the base of mine waste piles. It is well documented that the atmospheric oxidation of pyrite is catalysed microbially, causing a substantial decrease in the pH of the drainage waters. Acidification is then counteracted predominantly by natural abiotic remediation processes occurring downstream.

Developments in the technology of explosive production and deliveryallow a greater amount of flexibility in rock fragmentation by blasting. The rock fragmentation efficiency of an explosive is currently given by a rating which is determined by the explosive manufacturers using proprietary formulae and methodology. Hence, comparison of explosives from different manufacturers may be misleading. Modeling of explosive energy, using a thermochemical code such as CHEETAH provides an objective standard by which the likely performance of different explosive formulations can be determined. Such modeling can be used for optimisation of explosive composition to match specific rockfragmentation objectives.

The use of discrete element modelling (DEM) is widespread in the materials handling field, and is used for many applications. One of the important limitations in using DEM is the number of particles that can be modelled, with this limitation often resulting in increasing the minimum particle size in the simulation. This restriction on minimum particle size is usually accommodated in the calibration process where the parameters in the simulation are chosen in such a way as to reflect the presence of smaller sized particles, and in typical applications such as transfer chutes this is standard practice. However, in the application of vibrating screens the inclusion of the ‘fines’ is critically important due to their influence on the screening efficiency. In reality, the presence of fines reduces the screening efficiency for a number of reasons; however, the main mechanism that will be addressed in this study is the effect of adhering fines. This is where the fines adhere to the larger particles and are carried over into the lump stream. The approach for this study will be to firstly consider the relatively simple mechanical sieving process used in the determination of particle size distribution, and then this will be expanded to consider the application of vibrating screens.CITATION:Donohue, T J, Chen, W, Katterfeld, A and Reid, S, 2017. Massive hematite ore (MHO) is a special high-grade iron ore used as lump ore in the process of obtaining direct reduced iron (DRI). The influence of porosity on the reducibility was investigated using optical and scanning electron microscopes. Hematite is the main component of the samples and occurs as granular crystals (10 ¦m), microplates (1 ¦m) and euhedral martite (10 to 30 ¦m). Quartz, maghemite, kenomagnetite and goethite are minor components. Primary micropores (+ to 1 ¦m) are associated with microplaty crystals that fill cavities between granular hematite. Secondary micropores (+ to 5 ¦m) related to euhedral martite crystals are the most important. The total porosity of weathered samples, measured using nitrogen adsorption and mercury injection, attains values up to 18 per cent, whereas unweathered samples have a porosity less than 2.5 per cent. Varajpo et al, 2002 showed that reducibility is strongly enhanced by porosity and this work shows that reducibility can be indirectly evaluated by bulk density.

The effect of liner wear on SAG mill performance has gained much attention in recent years. It is commonly observed that the three key performance criteria of SAG milling; throughput, power and product size all improve as the liner wears.The increase in throughput is generally ascribed to the increase in the grate apertures and the increase in mill volume due to the wear of these components. Whilst the decrease in product size is attributed to the reduction in lifter height and angle, resulting in more breakage by means of attrition and abrasion.Though it is widely acknowledged that the wearing of liner components such as Lifters, Plates and Grates have a significant impact on mill performance, their individual contribution to changes in mill performance has been unclear, and resultantly lead to questions like; what percentage of the throughput increase can be attributed to the increase in mill volume (plate wear)? and how much can be attributed to the increase in grate aperture (grate wear)?It has been found that through the use of grinding surveys, analysis of production data and JKSimMet it was possible to separate the effects of changing liner profile, increasing mill diameter and increasing grate aperture on the mill performance allowing for the quantification of each.The outlined methodology allows for both troubleshooting of problem liner components which reduce milling efficiency in their wear life as well as providing a basis for a more quantitative approach to liner design and reline scheduling.CITATION:Toor, P, Powell, M, Hilden, M and Weerasekara, N, 2015. Increasing demand for fine grinding to improve mineral liberation and metal recovery and the need for stricter control of the environmental impact of tailings deposition poses problems for tailings disposal. This has led to an increasing number of investigations of properties of tailings and their disposal. This paper describes laboratory model testing undertaken on Macraes mine flotation tailings to provide information on tailings behaviour under conditions of subaerial deposition. The in-place density or 'dry density' of the impounded tailings and the impoundment depth relationship are important for utilisation of the available impoundment storage facility and results of dry density to depth relationships are given for the Macraes mine tailings impoundment.

The Australian glass sand industry produces some 2.8 million tonnes per annum of silica sand, of which about 2.0 million tonnes are exported and the rest is for the domestic market. Approximate production rates for each Australian state are listed. The variety of processing methods used in the currently exploited deposits reflects the size, location, and characteristics of the various deposits and the requirement of the end market/s. The industry uses to a large extent equipment developed for the separation of mineral sands, particularly as it applies to low grade heavy mineral deposits, where low cost, high capacity and metallurgically efficient equipment has proved eminently suitable for the production of the low value glass sands. The requirements of the domestic market, as well as those of the present and potential export markets are discussed covering quality requirements, distribution channels and other factors critical to success.

At Sams Creek a gold-bearing, peralkaline granite pophyry dike intrudes Ordovician-Silurian metapelite and quartzite. These metasedimentary rocks have undergone three phases of folding: a first phase of recumbent folds (F1), a second phase (F2) of northerly-trending inclined folds with a prominent crenulation cleavage, and a third phase (F3) of steeply plunging folds. The granite porphyry dike has a thickness of up to 40 m and intrudes thin lamprophyre dikes along its contacts. Deflection of the crenulation cleavage around the granite dike, shearing within the dike and its sinuous outcrop pattern indicate that the granite dike has been deformed during F2 and F3. The granite has been hydrothermally altered, with a first stage of magnetite-ankerite alteration. This first stage is cut by a second stage of quartz-pyrite veins and a third stage of sulphide, quartz and ankerite veins, accompanied by pervasive silicification represented by quartz-perthite-albite-rutile¦pyrite-ankerite-sericite assemblages. Lamprophyre is altered to an ankerite-chlorite-sericite assemblage. The sulphide veins are composed of arsenopyrite + pyrite ¦ gold ¦ galena ¦ sphalerite ¦ chalcopyrite ¦ pyrrhotite. The altered granite and the veins have been deformed and recrystallised. The competent sulphide minerals pyrite and arsenopyrite are fractured and brecciated, with fractures locally filled by galena, a ductile sulphide mineral. Vein quartz shows local cataclastic and mortar textures and develops pressure shadows around arsenopyrite. Alteration and mineralisation are confined to the granite porphyry and adjacent lamprophyre. These features together with the style of veining and the sulphide mineralogy indicate that the mineralisation was formed from a magmatichydrothermal fluid that was sourced from the granite. Oxygen, carbon and sulphur isotope values of the vein minerals (quartz, ankerite and sulphides) are also consistent with a magmatic source.

Separation of Minerals Using Electrical Fields The mineral processing industry requires alternative separation techniques to help deal with rising energy costs and decreasing ore grades. Dielectrophoresis is one possible technology. It uses non-uniform electrical fields to separate particles on the basis of their permittivity. In order to determine its viability, the dielectrophoretic force was measured for individual chalcopyrite particles in ethanol. The measurements were made by attaching the individual particles to glass fibres and measuring how far they were deflected by a non-uniform electrical field. Six sizes of chalcopyrite particles were tested and the force was found to increase as a function of particle radius cubed. The particles were also positioned at different points in the field in order to determine the effect of the electrical field gradient. The force was found to increase with the inverse cube of the distance from the centre of the particle to the pin electrode. With the effect of these parameters fully characterised, the single particle test cell can be used to determine the permittivity of single particles of various composition.

Distinguished guests ladies and Gentlemen. As many of you know, before I became a Labour Member of Parliament, I had an unusual career path for a politician, in that I spent quite a few years working in the business community. In other words, I was mainstreamed before I was institutionalised. Given that some of this time was spent working for the then Macraes Mining Company Limited, now Gold and Resource Developments NL, I feel that I may have a perspective on how things are seen, on both sides of the fence. In terms of public perception and esteem I am not sure which career option was the step up and which was the step down. So far what I have found very familiar, is that in both roles there is a gulf between the reality and the perception of that reality - a gulf that is both huge and hard to bridge. I think it is a point worth making here amongst another busy industry cluster, that we can all too easily get so embroiled in the day to day activities, that we lose sight of how this might look to those running on a different treadmill. I can still remember scratching my head at the beginning of some days, as I worked to get new mining projects started that I knew were going to bring real jobs and economic benefit to New Zealand, but ending the day feeling like I may instead have been proposing bringing back both strip mining and slavery. If I learnt one valuable lesson out of that time it was this: .... mining has become so publicly demonised on the road to ecological nirvana, that even attempting a lucid dialogue on mining issues, with some, is incredibly difficult.

Currently, two multispectral remote sensing satellites are providing regular data over New Zealand; aircraft scanner services are available from Australia.; operational radar satellite services are yet to materialise. The advantages and disadvantages of the various data types are compared and contrasted. Some image processing considerations are outlined.

There has been a strong trend over the past decade in hard rock mines towards the use of very high powered auxiliary (or secondary) fans; in many mines, the installed power for the secondary ventilation system now exceeds that of the primary ventilation system. This also reflects the trend to use two-stage auxiliary fans pushing air into a single ‘trunk’ duct that in turn splits into multiple branches with multiple outlets feeding multiple workplaces. This often produces a poor result in terms of face flows due to the high resistance, high leakage and badly managed duct outlets, as well as high fan capital and operating (power) costs, which in turn also results in a higher cost for the underground power reticulation/distribution systems. This paper explores the reasons why this trend exists and what ventilation practitioners can do to utilise less expensive systems that simultaneously deliver better workplace conditions. The Brisbane Airport Link Project (AirportlinkM7) includes the design and construction of more than 12.5 km of tunnels, with the Kedron interchange including four ramp tunnels that intersect with mainline tunnels and result in caverns with spans of up to 26 m. These caverns are in highly variable ground conditions with less than 35 m of cover underlying residential neighbourhoods and commercial properties. The Kedron caverns were constructed using the sequential excavation method (SEM). Owing to complex geometry and excavation sequence, the caverns were designed based on numerical modelling methods, including both two- and three-dimensional models. These numerical methods were used to develop a suite of support types with excavation sequences for the expected range of ground conditions. A combination of methods that included in-tunnel monitoring (convergence monitoring and extensometers), probe holes, endoscope probes, face mapping and ground settlement measurements were used to verify performance of the tunnel support systems and to select and refine the appropriate support system for each section of the caverns. The construction monitoring data indicated that numerical modelling can provide a good basis for predicting the performance of large-span underground openings in highly variable ground conditions. At New Zealand Steel MiningÆs Waikato North Head operation a Bucket Wheel Excavator û shiftable conveyor mining system is used to excavate titanomagnetite bearing sand and clay. The system utilises two Bucket Wheel Excavators and two Beltwagons with a two shiftable bench conveyors and two common trunk conveyors to deliver material to a processing plant. The original system was commissioned in 1984 as a high capacity, low cost method of excavating. In 1996 a second Beltwagon was purchased, increasing the flexibility of the mining system.

This paper reviews recent positive developments in Europe on the regulation of gold mining. However, it also examines the problem that while gold projects may be bankable and technically and environmental defensible, the odds tend to be stacked against granting of an environmental permit. The historic background to this situation is examined and current developments and initiatives are critically analysed. Standards and benchmarks for the industry have been established across the community and these have a strong influence in European Union accession (and aspiring) states as well. While this is welcome in regard to improving environmental performance, it also represents a significant milestone with mining (and particularly gold mining) now æon the mapÆ as a legitimate enterprise, a situation that was patently not the case prior to 2003. At the project level, very frequently, the difficult biophysical problems are addressed and satisfactorily dealt with according to the new regulations, but still there are problems regards trust and acceptance that underpin a æsocial licenceÆ. What goes wrong and how can companies deal with the social/environmental issues that lead to entrenched views and concerns, irrespective of any amount of demonstration of good practice and corporate social responsibility? What is the role of the non-governmental organisation (NGO) and are they as accountable and responsible as they should be? The findings presented draw upon recent experience with the environmental permitting of projects in Spain, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia on behalf of Australian, Canadian and British companies as well as international funding institutions.
