Macraes Mining Company Limited operates a 2.1 million tonnes per annum gold processing plant at Macraes Flat, Otago. This uses a conventional CIL route to treat oxide ore, and a flotation, grind, CIL route for sulfide ore. This paper describes the design and operation of this process plant.

Zinc smelting is frequently termed a backward art. The term is hardly true, for great progress has been made in recent years in the design and in the thermal efficiency of the retort furnace, in the quality of retorts, in the recovery of zinc, and in the ability to treat more impure and complex ores. The fact remains, however, that the peculiar physical and chemical properties of zinc have delayed such immense advances-large smelting units, high recovery, low-unit costs, and ability to treat low-grade ores-as have been made in the metallurgy of lead and copper. In current retort-smelting practice, the ores, if carbonates, are calcined to remove carbon dioxide; or, if sulphides, are roasted to remove sulphur. The sulphur must be eliminated as completely as possible, usually to less than 1 per cent. This means that the roast must be continued for a long time at a high temperature, with resulting high cost and small capacity per furnace. The roasted ore is mixed with about 50 per cent of its weight of reducer, which may be fine coke, anthracite, or nonbituminous coal. This mixture is charged into horizontal fire-clay retorts. The retorts used in this country are about 8 inches in internal diameter by 4 feet in length and hold 50 or 60 pounds of ore. The diameter of the retort is limited by the time required for the heat to penetrate to the center of the charge; the length by the strength of the retort, which at the high temperature employed can not support the weight of the charge if the span is more than about 50 inches. The retorts are heated externally by coal, natural gas, or producer gas to a temperature of 1,200° C. or more. The zinc oxide is reduced to zinc, which is volatile at this temperature, and passes into a conical fire-clay condenser attached to one end of the retort, where it condenses to liquid zinc and is removed. Twenty-four hours are required for distillation, and because of the low heat conductivity of the retort walls and of the ore charge itself, the heat efficiency even of the most modern regenerative furnaces is only about 12 per cent. Introduction Hydrometallurgical solvent extraction (SX) processes – featuring large quantities of combustible or flammable organic solvents - are common in the mining industry for recovering non-ferrous metals such as copper, nickel, cobalt, uranium, tungsten, iodine and lithium. Recent fire loss incidents and the widespread use of sub-grade tank farms and piping trenches, plastic piping, poor drainage, and closely spaced buildings demonstrate opportunities to improve the use of Inherent Safety (IS) in this industry. The mining industry has designed and constructed facilities with an emphasis on personnel safety, production efficiency and cost effectiveness. The use of IS to eliminate or minimize property fire exposures has not seen widespread practice. Lessons learned from the mainstream CPI have not been communicated or applied. As an example, copper SX plants have consistently used design of gravity flow as a cost and production-effective solution for transferring liquids and minerals through the process. In fact, Jergensen1 recommends to “utilize gravity to the fullest extent possible” in design of SX plants. This philosophy has been achieved by laying out SX plants with process equipment at different grade levels so that solutions can flow “downhill”. Because of the use of large quantities of flammable liquids and the potential for these liquids - if released – to flow unimpeded into other areas – gravity SX processes represent severe inherent fire consequences unless costly barriers, drainage and channeling are also provided. It appears that little thought has been given to the fire protection consequences and challenges of this design feature during the evolution of SX plants and most copper SX plants constructed today use some form of a sub-grade processing area (tank farm) and one-way gravity flow. While this layout is used to assure a cost effective operation it has resulted in significant exposures to high value production. The use of sub-grade production units is an inherently unsafe layout where flammable liquids are used and is a layout that would rarely if ever be used today by the mainstream CPI. Gravity-assist layout is only one example where copper SX plants have been designed and constructed without IS in mind. The use of combustible and frangible corrosion-resistant materials – such as glass, wood and plastic - for flammable liquid storage, processing and piping systems has significantly increased the hazards of these facilities. These materials of construction are not rigorous and allow for rapid failure and release of flammable contents during fire exposure. The use of combustible or frangible systems to handle or transport flammable liquids is not a practice seen today in the CPI.

Of the approximately 6,500 kimberlites known to date, less than 3% are diamondiferous and less than half of those are economically viable. Admittedly, this is a global figure and varies from area to area much depending on geological, logistical, and political circumstances. The number of diamond-bearing kimberlites is an important geobarometer, and an age-frequency profile has been compiled in order to identify diamond metallogenic epochs and provinces. Four primary diamond clusters have been recognized: Siberia (332-370Ma), Kaapvaal South(114-144Ma), Kaapvaal Southwest(84-95Ma), and Slave (52-55Ma). In addition, three secondary clusters are the Kaapvaal Central (S06-S38Ma), the Man Craton (139-lS3Ma) and the Kasai Craton (120-130Ma). The Kaapvaal is the only area where kimberlites with diamonds were discovered between 1870 and 1925, except for the Prairie Creek discovery in North America in 1906 and Colossus in Zimbabwe in 1907. Between 1906 and 1940 no major diamondiferous kimberlites were discovered, but many of Africa's alluvial deposits were found and exploited in that period. Advances in scientific prospecting in the 1940's rapidly accelerated the discovery rate that peaked in the 1990's; 39 diamondiferous occurrences were found in the 1980's, of which 8 became mines and 5 are in feasibility, and nearly 450ha of kimberlite was added to the global resource base. Despite the accelerated exploration expenditure, the last decade (e.g. 2000-2009) has been the leanest since the 1940's. The most important reason for this decline in exploration success is that any undiscovered deposits are largely buried by younger cover. Understanding complex and geophysical noisy basement geology, as well as decomposition of path-finder minerals are major challenges to further exploration success. Major investments in basic geological expertise and field research will have to be made in order to secure future diamond resources. Integrated geophysical studies, geochemistry diamond forensics, and improved imaging of Earth's upper mantle are perhaps foremost in this requirement, but the costs of these activities are such that government support will be required if countries are to sustain their diamond mining industry.

A small static bed was used to study the thermal cycles required for the heat hardening of pellets based on synthetic magnetite concentrates and a naturally fine hematite. This apparatus can be employed to yield broad process data for the design of a recuperative strand system operating on the magnetite concentrates.Various alternatives are given for a process to heat harden the hematite ore but a preference is given to the production of a self fluxing pellet. Bond types and general mineralogical structures are interpreted against the optimum firing cycle necessary to produce a defined quality of pellet.INTRODUCTIONThe work reported in this paper extends that on the "Heat Hardening of Artificial Magnetite Pellets", which was described at the International Symposium on Agglomeration, sponsored by the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers at Philadelphia, U.S.A. in April 1961. Whereas that work was of a more basic nature, serving to illustrate the suitability of artificial magnetites with various admixtures, to the application of heat hardened pellets, on this occasion the aim is to illustrate the procedures which were used to establish the dimensions of commercial recuperative strands for Australian raw materials.The nature of the pellet feed, Le. relatively uniform spheres of + i in.-Yi6 in. diameter, makes it possible to use small scale static pots for test work. WHEN the writer resided at Zeehan, qn the West Coast of Tasmania, some years ago, he took a keen interest in the geology of the district and availed himself of the opportunity to investigate occurrences, of the varied minerals in which the field abounds. The following notes were compiled as a result of one of his periodical visits to the outlying mining districts, when an examination was made of the bindsay Reward tin mining property, which has an area of 140 acres. This is most easily reached from Renison Bell, the centre of the North Dundas tin-fields, on the Emu Bay railway, 'about' eight miles north east of Zeehan. Thence a pack track some 14 -miles long connects with the mine, crossing the Piemah River by a fine suspension bridge.The mine itself is situated on the main south leading spot of the Parson's Hood Range, at an altitude of some 1600 ft. above sea level. The Parson's Hood Range is composed of granite and is an extension of the rugged Meredith Range. A remarkable feature is the uniform topography of the surrounding country when viewed from the peaks. Except where dissected by the rivers and creeks, the surface is practically level and, indeed, affords a striking illustration of an ancient uplifted peneplain.The mine has been opened by means of trenches and adits, and the ore-body proved to extend for a length of 30 chains, with an average width of about 100 ft. Its general trend is west-north-west, and its dip, which is steep, corresponds to that of the country-rocks. These latter, which are of sedimentary origin and generally regarded as of pre-Silurian age, have been tilted at high angles, consequent, no doubt, on the crustal movements produced by the intrusion of the huge granitic masses which now form the high ranges in the vicinity.It may be here remarked that it is not Within the scope of this paper to deal with the sequence of events leading to the geological structure...

GERMANIUM is an element that has come into widespread use in the electronics industry in recent, years. So far this increasing demand has been, met by ample supply: however, the future balance is uncertain, and the need has been recognized to discover additional domestic sources of germanium. This investigation was conducted to study the possibility of obtaining a potential supply of germanium from coal or coal ash. It has been known for some time that coal contains germanium; the discovery that By ash from coal-fired boilers often contains appreciably more germanium than the original coal suggested the possibility that coal ash might be an abundant and economical source of this element. In this study the concentration of germanium was determined in numerous samples of coal and ash. A number of miscellaneous waste materials also were examined in the course of the investigation; the results are reported as a matter of general interest. The methods and equipment employed are discussed in detail. Sample-preparation and analytical techniques are described in the appendix. Spectrographic analyses were made on a total of 639 samples, including coal, coal ash, slap ash from lignite and peat, wood ash, and various inorganic materials. Qualitative analyses were run on all samples, and quantitative determinations were made on those samples that contained enough germanium to be measured by this method The lower limit at which germanium can be determined quantitatively by spectrographic analysis is 50 parts per million (p. p. m.), but concentrations of less than 20 p. p. m. can be detected qualitatively.

Leaching column techniques and microbiological methods have been described in detail in Madgwick and Ralph (1980) and Madgwick, Ralph and Sadler (1981).Sixty-nine kilograms of copper porphyry ore (0.4 per cent Cu, 2.7 per cent Fe) (particle size 2.4-11.2 mm; 60 The effect of sodium chloride (O.6M) irrigation on bacterial leaching of Bougainville copper porphyry ore was studied.Viability of suspended Thiobacillus ferrooxidants was reduced to less than 10 cells/ml in NaCI (O.6M) compared with 10' eells/ml in dilute II,SO, (0.01 M, pll 2). Salt irrigation had no significant effect on heterotrophic and sulphur oxidizing bacteria. Increascd short term recovery of copper (145 g/tonne/ 15 days) was followed by a marked decrease in tenors to less than 20 mg/litre/day compared with an acid leach, steady release, of 110 mg/litre/day. Resumption of acid leaching restored average solution copper to 46 mg/litre/day and the viability of suspended T Ierrooxidates to 10 cells/ml.Quantitative removal of sodium ehloride from ore particles was difficult and t races of NaCI remained for more than 200 days.

A review of technical literature of the last quarter century discloses that much experimental work has been carried on in an effort to develop commercial processes for making sponge iron. In addition to the work that has been recorded, other work has been done the results of which have not been published. The degree of success or failure of these investigators does not detract from the fact that the problem has its challenging aspects and practical possibilities that encourage further investigation. The purpose of this report is to record information derived from recent experimental work that .had its 'objective the development and demonstration of one method of producing sponge iron. Work of other investigators was studied and applied wherever possible.

The results of investigations of the oil-shale resources of the United States were first published by the United States Geological Survey in 1915.1 Other reports 2 have followed. These reports, investigations by private individuals and corporations, and the beginning of the development of an oil-shale industry in this country have aroused considerable interest in the possibilities of these shales as a commercial source of hydrocarbon oils. The Bu- . reau of Mines bas appreciated these possibilities, and since 1916 one or more of its engineers have given all or part of their time to investigations relating to the treatment of oil shales. A short pamphlet a containing general information on the possibilities of oil shale in this country, particularly the shales of the Rocky Mountain district, has already been published. This pamphlet gives methods for assaying the shales of oil and ammonia and contains a bibliography for the use of those desiring to search the literature.

While effective in treating refractory sulfide ores, pressure oxidation leaves carbonaceous matter unscathed and able to adsorb gold from cyanide solutions. Barrick Goldstrike's strategy to mitigate this problem is to minimize contact between dissolved gold and native carbon in advance of the carbon-in-leach (CIL) process. Measures currently in use include limiting carbonaceous matter in the plant feed by meticulous blending of ore, controlling the degree of oxidation in the autoclaves and blinding native carbon surfaces with lauryl sulfate. The presence of residual cyanide and thiocyanate in the process water remains to be a cause of premature gold dissolution and loss of gold by adsorption on carbonaceous matter. This cyanide is introduced by water that is recycled from the tailing pond. Of several treatment options considered, oxidation by peroxymonosulfuric acid, also known as Caro's acid, is deemed to be the most effective. Laboratory and pilot plant tests show that Caro's acid can oxidize free cyanide, weak¬acid-dissociable (WAD) cyanide and thiocyanate, resulting in significant improvements in gold recovery downstream. The process requires Caro's acid at 125 % of the stoichiometric requirement and pH in the range of 9.5 to 10 to accomplish the desired destruction in about twenty minutes. A cyanide destruction plant is currently being designed and construction should be completed by the end of 2005.

Researchers from the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and personnel from Coeur Silver Valley, Wallace, ID, conducted tests using rock strain strips and Split-Set rock bolts instrumented with strain gauges to monitor wall rock strain at the Galena Mine, Osburn, ID. The objective of the test was to identify whether strain on the rock bolts increased prior to a rock burst. Although results were inconclusive, researchers learned that the Split-Set rock bolts yielded in stick-slip fashion in the highly jointed walls of the stope. The bolts were also bent as stress was redistributed following blasting and subsequent movement along joints in the wall rocks.

Microindentation testing using the square–pyramid–shaped Vickers indenter is a well-established technique to determine the microhardness of minerals and materials. However there is a paucity of published microhardness data from Fe ore samples. It is acknowledged that an iron ore’s particle mineralogy and texture is critical to its processing properties, and it is therefore considered that the microhardness of different mineralogical/textural types may also relate to these properties. Mineral microhardness potentially provides inputs to the modelling of breakage characteristics during comminution, as well as the relationship between mineral chemistry and microhardness, and mineral microporosity and microhardness. Microhardness can be determined as single crystal microhardness, for more coarsely microcrystalline samples, or as ‘aggregate microhardness’ for cryptocrystalline or finely microcrystalline samples.Variations in the texture and mineral chemistry of common Fe ore minerals (eg martite and microplaty hematite, ochreous and vitreous goethite etc) are well established and this study provides microhardness data on different textural forms of Fe (oxyhydr)oxides from a variety of different Fe ore deposits. The data indicated that in general, the mineral grain size, microporosity and texture were the main influences on Fe (oxyhydr)oxide microhardness. There were no apparent systematic variations between microhardness and minor element mineral chemistry, with the possible exception of Al content in goethite (for goethites with Al content >0.5 wt per cent), and for goethite total element contents >90 wt per cent (determined by electron probe microanalysis, EPMA). Higher Al concentrations and lower total element concentrations in goethite EPMA analyses correlated with lower goethite microhardness. Microporosity and grain size were more important than texture to hematite microhardness. Different textural forms of dense hematite (eg martite, recrystallised interlocking hematite and specular hematite) with similar grain size exhibited comparable microhardness. Microhardness values for hematite and hydrohematite with little or no evident microporosity were also similar, whereas more porous forms of martite, microplaty hematite or hydrohematite exhibited lower microhardness.CITATION:Peterson, M J, Manuel, J R and Hapugoda, S, 2017. Ordinary portland cement (OPC) is the key pozzalonic component of the concrete mix widely used as a construction material worldwide. B illions of tons of OPC are used in the construction industry each year. However, calcinations of limestone and silica that produce OPC also produce almost an equal amount of C O2 during the cement manufacturing process. Thus, OPC production accounts for nearly 7% of all anthropogenic C O2 emissions each year. The main objective of this study was to develop a geopolymer-based composite to be used as a substitute for OPC in concrete application to significantly lower the carbon footprint of the construction industry. A waste material produced during the coal combustion process was used as the main raw material for the geopolymer-based composite. It was mostly the nonmetallic content of the F-type fly ash produced from the combustion of bituminous coal. The authors envisioned extracting some of the valuable metal oxides from fly ash prior to using the major nonmetallic portion of the fly ash for geopolymer concrete application. The results obtained from this study showed that the compressive strength of geopolymer concrete compares favorably with that of conventional concrete prepared using OPC.

Controlled drilling and blasting continue to be an important method of block production and for block splitting. Drill and blast technique has disadvantage that sometimes, it produces cracks in uncontrolled manner and also produces micro cracks in the block as well as in remaining rock, if not carefully carried out. Recovery by this method is low compared to other methods. Therefore, attempts have continued to develop controlled growth of crack in desired direction. In this paper a series of tests are described using detonating fuse in marble. Economics of different methods is also compared. In comparison to conventional use when holes are lined with inexpensive cardboard or plastic liners with a slit, the cost and damage is the least and development of crack is in desired direction.

This report is in partial fulfillment of Contract S0241051 awarded to COMINEC on June 27, 1974. 'Me purpose of the work under this contract is to develop a conceptual design for an automated longwall mining system. The conceptual design will serve as the basis for future design and development of an automated longwall mining system capable of sustained production in excess of 2,500 tons per shift with reduced manpower which will ultimately be demonstrated in an area where conventional longwall mining has been successful. 1.2 DEFINITION OF THE PROBLEM 1.2.1 Why An Automated System The most obvious benefit of automation and remote control in a longwall mining system is the reduction of accidents consequent upon a reduced working force in the hazardous face areas. However, another important aspect of the problem is the skilled labor shortage which is being compounded by the need for vastly increased coal production. The United States coal mining industry had a working force of almost 600,000 miners in 1928 but was able to muster only 145,000 miners in 1970. The miners required to staff the additional working sections and the new mines necessary to meet our energy needs are simply not available. Only automation and remote control will permit a reduced work force with increased production by keeping the face equipment operating continuously.

"INTRODUCTION When nations throughout the world are pitted against each other in a war in which petroleum plays a major role, scientist and engineers of the petroleum industry must give serious thought to ways and means for recover¬ing greater percentages of oil from natural reservoirs than in the past. Petroleum and its products are vital to highly mechanized modern warfare, and the victorious nations will be those whose armies, navies, and air forces are supplied with adequate fuel oil, gasoline, and lubricants until the war is won.Efficient recovery of oil from underground reservoirs depends on many interrelated techniques; evaluation of the producing performance of wells upon the basis of their productivity indexes is one such tool. Oil wells usually yield oil at a maximum rate when first ""brought in"". The rate of production begins to decline soon after the first oil is delivered to the tanks, and although part of the decline usually can be attributed to natural reduction of reservoir pressure as oil and as are withdrawn from the reservoir, a larger proportion frequently is caused by greater saturation of water and as in the producing formation about wells and clogging of the pores of the sands by silt, organic salt, and insoluble hydrocarbons. If the maximum quantity of oil is to be recovered from reservoir sands and rocks by wells, it is then imperative that the ability of wells to produce oil be watched closely and all adverse influences that affect the case with which oil can flow to wells be corrected if possible."

"At the end of 2010 the AMSA Esperanza Concentrator started commissioning. Located in the Atacama Desert this project is the first of several large size concentrators developed recently to operate in Northern Chile. In addition to the new operations to be implemented in the short term, many existing installations are planning expansions. The use of large size equipment is one of the common characteristics of the new concentrators, but also new technologies are being considered and innovation is present in most cases. Sea water or desalinated water will be required to process large tonnages of sulphide copper ores as well as gold bearing ores, since process water supply from the Andes will no longer be available. The high cost of sea water or desalinated water supply and the high cost of energy are not a limitation as the current metal market scenario allows obtaining an attractive NPV even from installations designed to process relatively low grade ores. A review of the current concentrators being developed in Chile is presented, including a description of the main design issues related to technology and innovation. An analysis of the Chilean mining industry is also presented, detailing mine and plant capacities as well as expected final products.INTRODUCTION The mining sector in Chile has become a reference when analysing the large concentrator plants projected or currently in operation all over the world. At present and as a consequence of the high price of metal commodities, most South American countries have an active mining sector. Chile is known as a major producer of metals. First records of copper production exported to Spain are dated to the early XVII century. Since then Chile has produced over 13% of the total copper ever produced in the world. After 1990 Chilean mining and the associated cluster of activities has substantially grown to levels never reached before, especially in the production of copper, gold and other non-metallic minerals. This dramatic increase is the result of an economic policy based on delivering comparative advantages and incentives for the admission of foreign capital to offset the weak domestic investment in previous decades. Massive mining of its huge mineral resources has allowed Chile to be a world leader in the production of copper and other base metals and mineral products."
