"INTRODUCTION This report embodies the results of a detailed statistical microscopic examination of the ore and the mill products of the Silver King Coalition Mines Co., Park City, Utah.The study was conducted under the joint auspices of the United States Bureau of mines is cooperation with the University of Utah at Salt Lake City, Utah. The work was done in the cooperative Microscopic Service Laboratory, which was equipped by contributions from the following companies: Utah Copper Co., International Smelting & Refining Co., American Smelting & Refining Co., United States Smelting, Refining & Mining Co., Tintic Standard Mining Co., Silver King Coalition Mines Co., and Park Utah Consolidated Mines Co. The salaries and the other costs involved in operation of the laboratory were met by contributions from certain supporting companies. In addition to the regular personnel of the laboratory the Bureau of Mines contributed the part-time services of a microscopist-consultant to direct and assist with the technical work.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSThe authors acknowledge the courtesies extended by the Silver King Coalition Mines Co., through its general manager, M. The U.S. Bureau of Mines, Department of Labor, and United States National Committee of the CIE hosted the TC4.10 Mine Lighting Committee Meeting and Second International CIE Mine Lighting conference at the MSHA Academy in Beckley, WV from October 12-16, 1981. This was the first time the meeting and conference had been held in the United States. The TC4.10 Mine Lighting Committee, chaired by Dr. Adam Peretiatkowicz of Poland, was attended by 15 committee members and six guests representing eight countries. Discussion during the meeting covered mine lighting instrumentation, open cast (surface mine) lighting, and lighting sources. The committee also reviewed a draft of proposed lighting terminology and suggested changes to make the definitions more acceptable to representatives of the nations present. The mine-lighting conference featured 20 papers presented by 18 speakers representing six countries. The papers covered all phases of mine lighting, including research, hardware development and application, personnel acceptance, and requirements for system maintenance. The conference attracted 126 attendees and also included displays by eight lighting hardware manufacturers and four mining machine manufacturers. Papers from the conference are being published by the Government Printing office, with copies presented to the conference attendees. Copies will be available to others interested through the NTIS. During the course of the TC4.10 meetings and conference, committee members toured three mining equipment assembly plants, and six of the foreign representatives visited a longwall installation in an underground mine. "Wireless communication in the mineral processing environment is not as simple as it is in the home or office environment. The correct design of a wireless network in the mineral processing environment can offer a more flexible and lower cost installation than the transitional fiber networks. However with the flexibility of a wireless solution, also comes some limitations. By reviewing the plant requirements along with weighting the wireless benefits and limitations it is possible to design a network that combines the robustness of a wired solution with the mobility of a wireless solution. This paper addresses some wireless design considerations and it looks at some real life examples in the following areas: •,Meshed wireless network for high levels of redundancy •,Wireless instruments (such as HART, Modbus and others) •,Portable devices for mobile operators •,Network monitoring for plant personnel (it’s no longer just for IT people) INTRODUCTION Typical networks used in the mineral processing environment consist of a fiber network infrastructure with industrial switches used to connect the network devices. These fiber networks can be redundant or put into a ring topologies to offer a higher level of availability. Fiber networks have the benefits of: •,Immunity to noise from power and grounding issues •,Ability to span long distances (2km for multimode fiber and 20km for single mode fiber) •,Maintainable “off-the-shelf” technology Fiber networks however have some drawbacks, such as: •,Relativity high initial installation cost for cable trays, poles, trenches and pulling and termination of cable. •,Fixed geographic topology, adding future fiber drops may be challenging and expensive. •,Mobile users are not considered. Integrating a wireless network with a fiber network can offer the best of two worlds, a reliable high speed backbone for mission critical activities and a wireless network for remote applications and mobile users."

These annual reviews are guide's to the current work-and publications of the Bureau but do not replace the more complete reports published under the authorship of the individual investigators on specific problems in Bureau of Mines bulletins, technical papers, reports of investigations, and information circulars and in the technical press. The Annual Report of the Director of the Bureau of Mines to the Secretary of the Interior for the Fiscal Year ended June 30, 1945, summarizes the year's work on coal as follows: Coal and Coal Products The United States maintained its No. 1 industrial position in supplying fuel for war and in preparing for peace through more complete mining, improved preparation and up-grading of coal for special uses, and better utilization of coal in industrial establishments and homes.

The coal measures of the South Wales coalfield contain at least 50 horizons at which coal seams are known, to occur. More than 300 samples of coal were collected from these coal measures and this paper outlines thefindings of an investigation of the pattern and distribution of 12 trace elements in South Wales coals. A comparison of trace element contents of the South Wales coals is made with trace element values found elsewhereand an attempt was made to establish the organic affinity of the elements in different seams and in the coalfield 'as a whole. An important function of such an analysis is to determine the order of abundance of trace elements and this was performed for individual seams and for the whole coalfield.The interrelationship of certain elements in some seams is also examined with a view to understanding the effectiveness of such an approach to seam correlation.Ranges of values are quoted together with the mean values of the various elements. Variations of elemental values within a seam section and over the coalfield as a whole are discussed.

The author would like to refer to his contribution to the paper `Design of pillar systems in South Africa' by Ozbay et al. 1. The authors agreed `wholeheartedly that further research, together with carefully planned field trials, in pursuit of this potentially highly rewarding concept' of the small span small pillar method is warranted. On 30 September 2010 the author went underground at the Kroondal Chrome Mine to observe how the concept of smaller spans was being applied. He was pleasantly surprised to find that the typical coal mine bord and pillar sytem was being used very successfully. Although the deepest mining was taking place at a depth of only 450 metres, Kroondal would be an ideal mine to do further research together with carefully planned field trials. At Crown Mines Gold Mine, where the author worked, he was informed that the first recorded rockburst took place at a depth of 635 metres below surface. The depth of the platinum and chrome mines is increasing, with the risk of an excalation in injuries and fatalities due to 'backbreaks' and siesmic activity. The rock engineer at Kroondal was not aware of backbreaks occuring on the mine. It is important that the rock engineers of the base mineral and gold mines get together and give more serious attention to the host rock environment in which the pillars are situated.

It is shown that a differential colorimetric technique can be used as a routine method for the estimation of titanium in beach sands, and their ore dressing products. The method will tolerate the presence of most of the other elements usually found in beach sands. The accuracy is shown to be within the limits of ±0ò31 per cent for concentrates containing more than 95 per cent titanium dioxide and ±1 per cent for tailings containing 0ò2 per cent titanium dioxide. The method is described for use with a Hilger "Spekker" absorptiometer.

At the Palabora Mine, the transition to caving 400 m below the bottom of the 800 m deep pit resulted in a slope failure of the North wall that began in 2003, and is still mobile. This failure can be explained by the daylighting into the cave zone of a prominent joint set. The failure was modelled by the 3-dimensional code 3DEC, which is capable of modelling the nonlinear behaviour of discontinuum materials with large displacement.

"Advances in technology provide educators with valuable tools to enhance their teaching and efficiently deliver content to larger audiences. University educators are often encouraged to become more “research intensive” and to increase student enrollment. Faced with these pressures, there is a tendency to use technology to improve teaching efficiencies rather than to enhance existing teaching approaches. Practical learning in applied engineering courses would suffer greatly if hands-on experience is not emphasized. This paper discusses advantages and limitations of new technologies applied to learning, and methods to incorporate more hands-on experiential teaching techniques to applied mining engineering courses.RÉSUMÉ Les avancées technologiques fournissent aux éducateurs des outils intéressants pour rehausser leur enseignement et livrer efficacement de la matière à de grands auditoires. Les éducateurs universitaires sont souvent encouragés à devenir plus « axés sur la recherche » et d’augmenter l’inscription d’étudiants. Face à ces pressions, il y a une tendance à utiliser la technologie pour améliorer l’efficacité d’enseignement plutôt que de rehausser les approches existantes d’enseignement. This paper presents a dynamic analyses of heap leach pad stability under high phreatic levels and various levels of seismic loading. The dynamic analysis were conducted as fully non-linear two dimensional analyses with fully coupled liquefaction triggering using the Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua (FLAC) computer code. Also, the geotechnical parameters, appropriate earthquake record selection and modification, model calibration, numerical analyses and results are discussed.

"Seafloor mining provides significant potential economic benefits for many Pacific nations that may be "land poor" but "coastline rich," meaning they have the potential to utilize and profit from the mineral wealth within their Exclusive Economic Zones that extend 200 nautical miles (360 km) out from their coastlines. The Independent State of Papua New Guinea (the State) recognizes this tremendous opportunity and is taking a leadership role in this emerging industry by becoming a 15% partner in Solwara 1 (with an option to increase their investment to 30%).The Solwara 1 Project has been gaining momentum since Nautilus Minerals and the State signed an Agreement on April 24. This new agreement with the State in which they have staked a minimum 15% interest as a meaningful partner, underscores the State’s continued and widespread support for the Project. Signing of this Agreement was a historical occasion and a milestone achievement for Nautilus Minerals and the people of PNG.The machinery being built for the Solwara 1 Project is taking shape. The Seafloor Production Tools are now over 90 percent complete. Assembly of the biggest tool, the Bulk Cutter, was completed in April this year and assembly work on the Collecting Machine and the Auxiliary Cutter commenced in May and June this year respectively. The Riser and Lifting system, which will be used to transfer the mined material from the seafloor to the surface within an enclosed system, is over 50 percent complete. The critical path for the Solwara Project is to secure a suitable vessel arrangement. Nautilus aims to have this completed by the end of this year."

The ever-increasing depth of mineral extraction presents a challenging environment for hard-rock underground mines. High in situ stresses and associated seismicity with potential rockburst hazards are the major decisive factors contributing to the choice of a ground support regime. Conventional ground support systems, designed primarily for static loads, are not always capable of providing safe working conditions for underground personnel in seismically active mines. Systems specifically developed to resist dynamic loading and allowing for larger deformations are therefore preferred alternatives. High-tensile chain-link mesh has a proven record of successful use in open cut operations in various rockfall barrier installations due to its high energy absorption capacity. It has also been used in underground operations in various parts of the world. Its application in South African underground mining, however, is limited due to the high labour intensity. This paper describes a method of mechanized installation of a chain-link mesh as evaluation at Gold Fields' South Deep Gold mine situated some 45 km south-west of Johannesburg. A purpose-built mechanized roll mesh handler, developed in Australia, was used in this trial. The handler is compatible with all standard multi-boom underground drill rigs and is operated utilizing the hydraulic circuit normally used for the feed arrangement. A number of key performance indicators have been specified as success criteria by Gold Fields: ? A 30% faster installation compared to the conventional methodology ? The mesh should sustain any blast damage when applied to the blasting face ? No unravelling of the mesh when cut ? No failure of mesh under normal conditions ? Reliability of the MESHA® installation handler (availability >90% ? Compatibility of the MESHA® installation handler with AC 282 boomers. Although the energy-absorbing mesh combined with yielding rockbolts is a ground support system of choice for rockburst-prone conditions, the operational upsides recognized during the trial imply that this product can also be competitively used in less demanding ground conditions where weld mesh or shotcrete are customarily used as a primary surface support.

The purpose of the development described in this report and as stated in the contract work statement is to "design, develop, fabricate, test and demonstrate, and deliver to the government permissible low cost cylindrical stress gauges and associated components capable of measuring change of stress as a function of time in underground coal mines. The cylindrical stress gauges shall be suitable for installation in bore holes". The technique adopted for measuring rock stress changes is to preload a steel cylinder diametrically across the sides of a 1-1/2 in diameter bore hole and detect deformation of the cylinder from stress changes in the rock, by means of a vibrating wire transducer. By calibration, changes in the period (time for one wire oscillation at the natural frequency) of a high tensioned wire stretched diametrically across the cylinder in the direction of load application are related to stress changes in the rock. To completely evaluate the stress field change in the plane of the bore hole, three gauges set at an angle to each other are required.

Asbestos crystallizes within rock formations undergoing intense deformation characterized by folding, faulting, shearing, and dilation. Some of these conditions have prevailed during formation of the taconite iron ore deposits in the eastern Mesabi Iron Range of Minnesota. This range includes the Peter Mitchell Taconite Mine at Babbitt, Minnesota. The mine pit is over 8 miles long, up to 1 mile wide. Fifty three samples were collected from 30 sites within areas of the pit where faulting, shearing and folding occur and where fibrous minerals might occur. Eight samples from seven collecting sites contain significant amounts of ferroactinolite amphibole that is partially to completely altered to fibrous ferroactinolite. Two samples from two other sites contain ferroactinolite degraded to ropy masses of fibers consisting mostly of ferrian sepiolite as defined by X-ray diffraction and TEM and SEM X-ray spectral analysis. Samples from five other sites contain unaltered amphiboles, however some of these samples also contain a very small number of fiber bundles composed of mixtures of grunerite, ferroactinolite, and ferrian sepiolite. It is proposed that the alteration of the amphiboles was caused by reaction with water-rich acidic fluids that moved through the mine faults and shear zones. The fibrous amphiboles and ferrian sepiolite collected at the Peter Mitchell Mine composes a tiny fraction of one percent of the total rock mass of this taconite deposit; an even a smaller amount of these mineral fragments enter the ambient air during mining and milling. These fibrous minerals thus do not present a significant health hazard to the miners nor to those non-occupationally exposed. No asbestos of any type was found in the mine pit. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. Recent, detailed mapping, (Allibone, 1986; Peden, in prep.) of north west Stewart Island, has shown that the Rakeahua Granite (Watters et al, 1968), is comprised of a wide range of granitoid bodies ranging from diorite to leucogranite. As a result of the wide variation in granitoids Allibone (1986), suggests renaming of the Rakeahua Granite to the Rakeahua Granitoid Complex. Names were also proposed for the individual granitoid bodies mapped.

Handling materials in underground mines continues to be a major safety problem. To help reduce materials-handling injuries, researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are investigating those materials-handling tasks in underground mines that appear to generate a high number of injuries. Data from the Mine Safety and Health Administration for the years 1989-1999 were studied to find out if there were any trends in materials-handling accidents and if so, to determine what tasks were involved and the sources of injuries. Several underground coal and metal mines were visited to document innovative materials-handling technologies. Considerations for safety training and mechanization needs for continued reduction in materials-handling injuries are described.

THIS REVIEW contains abstracts of the technical literature and patents dealing with the history, development, and commercial application of the Bergius and related processes for the hydrogenation, under greater than atmospheric pressures, of liquid and solid carbonaceous materials such as coal, lignite, their distillation and extraction products, pitches and tars, and petroleum and its distillation residues. An attempt has been made to include abstracts of all the published information on this process and of as much of the captured foreign documents and reports compiled therefrom as could consistently be reviewed during the time allotted for the work. Contact with the current literature and patents and review of the foreign documents will be continued and the information will appear in Synthetic Liquid Fuels Abstracts, which is being issued bimonthly as a Bureau of Mines publication. The material in this review is divided in two sections-literature (part I) and patents (part II)-and each of these is arranged alphabetically by author or patentee with further chronological arrangement under each author or group of authors. Secondary authors and patentees as well as assignees are cross-indexed to the main entry. In serial articles or reports the complete series appears in the alphabetical arrangement according to the author of the first member of the series. Succeeding members as well as secondary authors are entered as cross references; Titles of the journals are used as the authors in anonymous references. By following such a procedure, an author index is not required. However, a detailed subject index and a numerical patent list by countries are given as part III.
