This paper is a brief record of the State's involvement in the problems that have faced Iow-grade mines in the South African gold-mining industry for a period of more than sixty years. Not all the recommendations made by the various commissions are recorded here, but those which are included highlight the fact that many of the problems that plagued the industry during those years, whether economic or labour matters, are still troubling the industry today.

Final mine sealing of BMA’s Crinum North mine, near Emerald, Queensland was undertaken in December 2015. Due to the benign atmospheric environment at Crinum North, the Queensland Mines Rescue Service (QMRS) Górniczy Agregat Gasniczy (GAG) unit was utilised to reduce oxygen levels throughout the underground atmosphere as part of the final sealing process.The GAG was utilised by way of a vertical borehole from the surface to seam to successfully reduce oxygen levels throughout the underground mine workings. Application of the GAG unit enabled the underground mine to be classified as stable and inert within days of the GAG operation, and subsequently cease gas monitoring at Crinum North. The data and information obtained from this activity provides valuable information to the underground coal mining industry on successful application of the GAG in realistic situations.This paper discusses the strategy used for sealing, the assisted inertisation and the results obtained from the application of the GAG unit. It discusses both the overall results and gives a detailed review of the gas monitoring data obtained via the tube bundle and real-time system, both during and following the use of the GAG unit.Gas monitoring results obtained and the strategy used are critical to share with the industry to obtain a better understanding of how the GAG unit works, and how it can be applied for emergency preparedness, emergency response or planned inertisation.CITATION:Westthorp, E, 2017. The stratigraphy of the central Pine Creek Geosyncline has been simplified into a three-fold subdivision comprising the Batchelor, Frances Creek and Finniss River Groups. The Batchelor Group consists of a sequence of shallow water coarse clastics and crystalline carbonates and is conformably overlain by the marine carbonaceous shale dominated Frances Creek Group. Interbedded within the carbonaceous shale are turbidites, iron formation, tuffs, carbonate and non carbonaceous shale. The Finniss River Group is a flysch sequence of greywacke and mudstone. The stratigraphic and structural evolution and igneous history are all interrelated. Although the Batchelor Group may have formed in a tensional regime, it is likely that regional compression and accompanying thin skinned deformation began during deposition of the Frances Creek Group. Continued compression resulted in D2 folding d6collement deformation, wrench faulting in compressional zones and thrust faulting. Occasional relaxation of compression is marked by a number of periods of basic intrusion and perhaps distal volcanism. The style of deformation within sediments varies away from granitic basement highs and is similar to that observed around salt domes and found in experimental diapiric models. Sedimentary facies changes also indicate local emergence of basement highs during sedimentation. As compression continued, the deposition of thick sequences of the Finniss River and El Sherana Groups brought about regional metamorphism. Relaxation of compression and waning of associated subsidence resulted in a relative increase in the rate of uplift and partial melting of diapiric sialic basement. In places, granitic magma moved upwards and crystallised forming grossly concordant bodies. Other masses moved laterally and formed extensive granitic sills. Later compression periods caused mainly brittle deformation which may have been strongly influenced by underlying basement fabric.

The question of the desirability of recovering cullet from MSW in order to recycle it into the manufacturing of glass containers remains a controversial one. The main factors appear to be: 1. The position of the Glass Container Manufacturers Institute (GCMI), as the trade association for most container manufacturers, is that post-consumer cullet is a vital source of raw material. Present requirements are for: a) Flint cullet b) Non-flint cullet of known mix proportions c) Mixed unsorted cullet of known mix propertions c) Mixed or non-flint cullet of unknown mix proportions. A market balance for these products exists, and this might somewhat limit the outlets for (b), (c) and (d), or severely limit the outlet for (d) alone. 2. The color specifications are rather strict. With cullet admixtures of 20% of the melt or more, and the use of decolorisers in a flint furnace discouraged because their action is reducing in a process which requires an oxidising environment, color contamination in a flint furnace is serious.. For amber and green furnaces (reducing) it is less serious, but in order that the quantity of decolorisers may be controlled, the color balance (as a measure of the Fe and Cr content) of the admixtured cullet should be known. 3. Why not simply color analyze, either by a continuous on-stream or off-stream: photo-electronic analysis, or by systematic batch sampling (with some kind off electronic surveillance of the mainstream) and just send mixed, color measured cullet to only amber and green furnaces? The flint would-be simply included in the mix. This is probably technically feasible, but is subject to the market limitations noted in point1.

Mine planning includes equipment selection as a subprocess because aging equipment must be replaced to maintain or improve productivity levels. The criteria used for decision-making in mine planning and equipment selection are often inextricably linked and inherently contradictory. For example, financial wisdom demands that development, which is an expense and locks up capital, be deferred as far into the future as possible yet on the contrary technical knowledge suggests that developing well ahead of stoping is practically desirable because it generates additional geological information required to improve planning of the unmined portion of the orebody and create better operating flexibility. Consequently, mine planning professionals have to delicately balance all decision criteria when executing mine planning in order to achieve optimal mineral extraction or when selecting equipment, so that capital is optimally deployed. These two processes can therefore be characterised as belonging to the multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) type of problems. MCDA problems are alternatively referred to as multiple attribute decision-making (MADM) problems and belong to a broader group of problems called multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM). There is now a gradual recognition and application of MCDA techniques in the minerals industry. This paper explores the theory, current and potential application of these techniques in decision-making in the minerals industry.

The Wamum and Idzan Creeks Prospect, located 79km W of Lae, Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea (PNG) was discovered by the exploration arm of Conzinc Riotinto of Australia Pty Ltd (CRAE). The detailed surface exploration and 11 vertical holes drilled by CRAE, combined with the recent work by Highlands Gold Limited, indicate the occurrence of porphyry copper-gold mineral- isation and associated alteration. The prospect occurs within andesitic volcanics of the Middle Miocene Langimar Beds. It is bounded by NE trending faults to the NW and SE. The alteration and mineral- isation is hosted in the andesitic tuffs adjacent to high level quartz diorite and hornblende diorite stocks. A NW trend to alteration and mineralisation is obvious in Wamum and Idzan Creeks. The main alteration type is propylitic with minor zones of potassic alteration. A late sericite-quartz-kaolinite-pyrite alteration overprinted the earlier alteration and mineralisation. Copper and gold mineralisation is related to a quartz-carbonate-chalcopyr-ite-pyrite (¦ bornite) vein stockwork and biotite ¦ K-feldspar alteration. The mineralisation system at Wamum and Idzan creeks is low in total sulphides. It is considered as a high- level fracture-controlled system with limited low grade Cu-Au mineralisation.

The purpose of this paper is to cover in a general way the extent, geology, quality of product, working methods and trials of the coal mining industry. of New South Wales from 1946 to the present day, with particular reference to the Western field.It must be clearly understood that any opinions expressed are those of the author and not necessarily those of the Joint Coal Board.The extent of the Western coal field at the present stage of investigation may be said to be from a few miles east of Katoomha to a few miles north-west of the township of Ulan, the total distance being 150 miles.To the west of a line from the Western Highway from Lithgow through Wallerawang, PortIand, Tyldesley, Ben Bullen, Kandos and Rylstone, there are no signs of coal except for one or two outiiers in the neighbourhood of Portland. Tower Mills are used at Aberfoyle's newly commissioned Hellyer base metal sulphide concentrator. Hellyer ore is particularly fine grained. To achieve adequate liberation fine grinding is necessary. Three Tower Mills are used on regrind duties, grinding to less than 20 microns. The physical arrangement, material flows and grinding characteristics for the Hellyer Tower Mills are described. The mills have performed satisfactorily, both in size reduction and power efficiency. Wear parts must be inspected and changed more often than with ball Mills. To date, 92 per cent availability has been achieved. As parts and maintenance routines are rationalised, this is expected to improve to 96 per cent. Modifications to wear parts for the Hellyer Tower Mills are discussed.lhc Tower Mill grinding environment is highly reducing. The impact of Tower Mill regrind on downstream flotation is discussed.

Tunneling in carbonate sedimentary rocks such as lime stones and dolomites can be difficult when solution channels or voids are anticipated. Addressing the risk aspects associated with these formations can be done effectively through the Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) by properly characterizing the ground and ensuring that the Owner?s and the Contractor?s interests are represented and protected. This paper presents a review of tunneling difficulties in these rocks and includes a review of site investigations, geologic characterization, and presentation in the GBR. Key construction issues are also discussed, including appropriate excavation technology, mechanisms of face support and groundwater control, and quantifying grout takes.

Rapid growth in the rate of surface mining for coal has caused many states to increase the rigor and complexity of their surface mining codes. The promulgation of Federal surface mining standards may cause those states containing Federal land to amend their codes also. Presented is an up-to-date review of these codes with tabular summaries that divide the codes into operative functions. These summaries will be of use to new operators, multiple-state operators, and state officials. Suggestions are made for industrial efforts to present workable and acceptable amendments to these codes.

Heavy structures in central Cleveland, Ohio, are supported on raft foundations, driven piles, or caissons. Settlements can be predicted and structures are designed to accommodate such settlements. On one project the settlements were not provided for in the design of the structure. Soils are sands, silts, and varved clays to shale. A rift in a central area is 600 feet deep. Solutions to problems, and results, are detailed.

The history of the activities, both in teaching and research, is outlined, as well as some of the perceived research opportunities that the University of Stellenbosch is currently focusing on. During 2015 and 2016, the authors conducted a number of surveys, workshops and reviews of ventilation and gas management practices in Australian underground coalmines. The study was funded by ACARP with a brief to identify gaps in ventilation and gas management practices for current and future needs, and to prepare a road map for change that would assist in delivering improvements.The study found that despite many examples of leading practice, gas and ventilation management is not afforded the attention and priority that is warranted and that this must be remedied if future operational performance targets are to be achieved and the safety of the industry protected. The wetting behavior of liquid polymers at solid surfaces and the adhesion forces involved at polymer-filler interfaces should always be considered in the fabrication of high quality polymer composites, including those made with mineral fillers. Spontaneous polymer spreading over the filler surface is a basic condition in the fabrication of the polymer-mineral composites. In this regard, the wetting and adhesion characteristics of polymer-mineral systems are reviewed in this contribution. It appears that several aspects of wetting phenomena at mineral filler surfaces are not well described in the literature and require further systematic study. Specifically, it is clear from this review that efforts should be made to determine the effects of mineral surface contamination (including surface hydration) on wetting and adhesion phenomena, and to determine the wetting characteristics of molten polymers at mineral filler surfaces. It is expected that any improved fundamental understanding of wetting and adhesion phenomena for the polymer-mineral composites will provide the basis for further technological development.

In this paper we review work-based placement as done at the four South African mining schools: the University of Johannesburg, the University of Pretoria, the University of the Witwatersrand, and the University of South Africa.Key aspects of past and current WIL (pre- and post-graduation) practices that may need attention are highlighted for consideration by all universities that provide professional qualifications. Work-directed theoretical learning, problem-based learning, project-based learning, workplace learning, and simulated work experiences are discussed as legitimate approaches to WIL.Regardless of the choice each institution makes, commitments of universities, preparedness of university teachers, and the desire for equity and excellence will play an important role in the provision of WIL.DefinitionsAccredited Qualification: a qualification awarded on successful completion of an accredited programme.Advisory Boards (or Committees): are essential infrastructure for a WIL curriculum that is built on the integration of the workplace and the university. Crown ethers are gaining importance in separation technology specifically for rare earth elements (REE, La to Lu plus Y) and precious metals (Au, Ag, Pt, Pd, Rh and Ir) due to their specific binding ability, metal complex stability and high extraction efficiency. The selectivity of crown ethers in extraction of these metals depends on different factors, including the cavity diameter and nature of a donor atom of the crown ether, size and charge of the metal ion, diluents and counter ion. Demand for strategic REE and precious metals are consistently increasing in the world while the separation of these metals is most challenging tasks. In this paper, the use of crown ethers in separation of REE and precious metals, reaction mechanisms and simplified process flowsheets will be elucidated. New reagents with high selectivity for the separation of these metals are further expected to produce high purity metals.

Dramatical increase in the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere has led to the climate change, which poses a significant threat to human life on Earth. CO2 sequestration via mineral carbonation is the one of the most effective method for mitigating global warming, and is the only way that could store CO2 permanently. In recent years, integrating mineral carbonation via ultramafic mine deposit has received significant attention due to its high potentiality towards commercial application. This review compiles the work conducted by various researchers over the last few years on integrated mineral carbonation processes in mining industry, which use the mine waste materials as CO2 feedstock for mineral carbonation. This paper initially introduces the basic theory of mineral carbonation, with a brief description of various techniques that enhance the rate of mineral carbonation. The enhanced mineral carbonation strategies include pre-treatment of feedstock by thermal, chemical and mechanical activation, and carbonation in a direct or indirect carbonation routes under gas/solid phase or aqueous phase. This paper then introduces the scope of application of integrated mineral carbonation. This includes the types of mine suitable for integrated mineral carbonation, the properties of mine waste materials preferable for CO2 sequestration, and the worldwide locations potentially viable for integrated mineral carbonation. Moreover, this paper critically reviews and discusses the integrated mineral carbonation process in mining industry. The integrated mineral carbonation processes include modified passive carbonation techniques at tailing dams, and ex-situ carbonation routes using fresh tailings. The focus of the discussions is the role of reaction condition on the carbonation efficiency of mine waste with various mineralogy, and the drawback of each integrated mineral carbonation process. All the discussions lead to the suggestions on the technology improvement in the integrated mineral carbonation process. Finally, this paper reviews the economical assessments on the existing integrated mineral carbonation process. Literature to date indicates that the value-add by-products (i.e. recovered metals, valuable carbonated products) play an important role in commercialization of an integrated mineral carbonation process.

Iron separation from rare earth elements has always been an essential operation in almost all steps of rare earth element recovery and purification processes. As RE3+ and Fe3+ behave similarly in many operations the separation can sometime be either difficult or cost-inefficient. This article attempts to review the methods and options for removing the iron content within the process, with the focus on the existing or proposed precipitation and solvent extraction technologies. The precipitation of iron from REE solution as iron hydroxide, jarosite, goethite, hematite, or phosphate are briefly introduced. Methods for precipitating REE from solutions leaving iron impurities in the aqueous phase are discussed. Some proposed solvent extraction flow sheets for separating iron from REE are conceptually reviewed in this article.
