The incorporation of low cost technology transfer to increase the ability of locals to acquire and maintain long term employment are key ingredients for sustainable industrial development. Alcoa’s Alumar plant on the island of Sao Luis is the largest and most modern refinery/smelter complexes in northern Brazil. The plant has one of the most advanced Environmental, Health, and Safety management process in the aluminum industry. Technical assistance, training and financial support were made available to Alumar to address social sustainability issues. Through several programs led by employees on a voluntary basis and applying intensive and extensive training programs, Alumar has enabled local people to develop skills on agriculture and land management, wastes minimization, small business development and administration, all based on sustainable development and social responsibility concepts.

Sodium sulfate is one of the larger tonnage industrial minerals. A little more than half of this tonnage — 3 Mt/a (3.3 million stpy) of natural product— is recovered from ore deposits. Most of the rest is produced as a byproduct from other manufacturing operations. Sodium sulfate is mined in a variety of ways. These include conventional room-and-pillar mining, strip mining, in situ leaching of thick ore beds, solar evaporation and cooling-crystallization of lake brine, and the pumping of brine from complex salt deposits. There is also a variety of commercial sodium sulfate ore sources. They include thenardite (the mineral form of sodium sulfate, or Na2SO4), mirabilite (glauber salt,Na2SO4•10H2O), glauberite (Na2SO4•CaSO4), astra-kanite (bloedite; Na2SO4•MgSO4•4H2O), burkeite(2Na2SO4•Na2CO3), sodium sulfate-containing caliche and various brines.

An intelligent supervisor using expert system tools and applied to a crushing plant has been developed with a structure based on a model of a human operator. It consists of a knowledge base containing a qualitative model of the process and a rules base with the heuristic logic used by an operator when supervising a plant. The simulation results obtained show the potential of this type of system to supervise the automatic operation of a plant. There has been very significant development in artificial intelligence over the last two decades. Within this development, two approaches can be distinguished, (Winston, 1984). The "model approach," in which the main objective is to understand and model the be¬havior of living systems. The second approach is the "engineering approach." Here, systems capable of performing tasks usually requiring human intelligence are created. As part of this latter approach, knowledge engineering and its main achievement, expert systems, have been developed. Expert systems arose from the need to incorporate the abilities of a human expert in solving realistic problems in which the conventional approach has great difficulties. The first successful applications of expert systems were in medical diagnosis, geophysics, and fault detection. However, since 1971, when Fu (1971; defined intelligent control as the inter action of artificial intelligence and automatic control, some significant developments in the use of artificial intelligence tools for process control have been achieved (Astrom, 1986; Pinto 1988; Fahrenkrog, 1988; and Porter 1987). The modern control theory has made important advances. And, although successful in some applications, it has failed to cope with the practicalities of many industrial processes. As a result, the automatic operation of a plant has been confined to a small region around a normal operating point and to periods without any great disturbance. One of the main reasons for this is the lack of accurate and structured knowledge of the processes involved. Despite this, operators applying their knowledge, experience, and a little intuition, often obtain good results controlling the plant in such situations. Considering the above, the next obvious step is to include similar reasoning capacities in a computational system. Mining Ventures are considered as high risk projects and therefore managing the risks is inevitable. Risk assessment is an important part of the complex process of risk management, hence applying appropriated and practical methods for ranking the risks associated with projects, can help to perform a better risk management. In this research the applicability of using Techniques for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method for risk ranking in an underground mine, extracting by block caving method, was studied. Via this method, the risk associated with reserve estimation ranked as the first while in conventional method (P-I Matrix method) located in the sixteenth. Also there were significant differences in ranks of the other risks. Considering the more criteria, with different weights, in comparison with conventional methods, the results comprised from TOPSIS method are more reliable. By implementing this method risks are ranked better and more realistic and consequently then will be managed more efficient.

Mountaintop removal (MTR) mining started in West Virginia nearly 30 years ago. This surface mining method can extract multiple coal seams as thin as a few inches in whole and minimum rock dilution in very steep mountainous terrain. MTR is highly efficient, even if coal seams are in close proximity and small in a real extent. Consequently, MTR has been widely used in the Central Appalachian coalfield (mainly Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia) with great success. In that respect, there has been no demand for research and little scientific research has been performed to investigate its impact on the surrounding area. During the past two years, however, the debate over MTR mining has grown quickly and has become very intense. This article describes chronologically issues raised by various parties, legal actions, impacts on mining permit applications and research projects developed to address the issues.

On Friday, May 27, 1983 at about 6 p.m., an avalanche occurred at the Revenue-Virginius Mine. Six mine personnel and two contract diamond drillers were trapped when the avalanche covered and blocked the portal, the only access into the mine. The San Juan Mountain Range in southwestern Colorado is an old volcanic caldera. It has dikes and other intrusions, many of which are mineralized with sulfide ores rich in silver, gold, lead, zinc and copper. Several peaks rise above 4,260 m (14,000 ft) and the district has been the location of avalanches dating back to prehistoric times. This is evidenced by the numerous snow-slide chutes that are infamous enough to be named on topographic maps.

In 2004, management at Unimin’s Gleason, TN operation began implementing ergonomic interventions specifically targeted to reduce risk of musculoskeletal injuries (MSIs). Together with corporate and site management, Unimin identified work site hazards and began to modify work practices/equipment. Some interventions were relatively simple and were implemented immediately. Others, like improvements to a mobile shredder, were more complex but were eventually resolved through a participatory approach with employees, management, manufacturers and NIOSH. This paper discusses ergonomic interventions that were successfully implemented using a bottom-up approach to reducing the risk of injury.

Noise is one of the most pervasive health hazards in mining. A compilation of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) noise survey data for Fiscal year 1990 shows that approximately 40% of the total samples taken for longwall occupations exceeded the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) of 100% [Gigliotti et al. 1991]. In order to properly determine workers’ exposures on longwall coal mining systems, it is necessary to provide accurate baseline measurements for these mining systems. This research was designed to develop guidelines and test procedures for identifying all noise sources that are major contributors to the underground noise exposure of longwall coal mining system workers. Once the high noise sources are identified, promising engineering controls can be tested and evaluated to reduce the noise of the sources. The measurement system used to analyze the noise sources included stationary dosimeters in a documented repeatable pattern and a time-motion study of the cutting cycle and operator’s work cycle. Significant results from the underground measurements show that the highest sound levels recorded are at the stageloader discharge segment and tailpiece controls and remained at about the same level throughout the test.

When the 2008 Olympic Games begin in Beijing, China is September it will not only mark the end of the journey for the Olympic torch and the thou-sands of participating athletes, but the games will also mark the culmination of a massive amount of construction in the city. On display for the world to see will be 31 new and refurbished venues including the 91,000-seat National Stadium called the ?Bird?s Nest? and the aquatics center, called the Water Cube. What will not be featured as prominently on the television cameras broadcasting the games around the world will be the network of tunnels built beneath the city. But that infrastructure of rail lines will be of critical importance to the games. While preparing to host the world, China added a subway tunnel that will include four stops in the Olympic Park. The 4.4-km (2.7-mile) subway line that runs through the complex of stadiums, gymnasiums and parks began trial operations in June. Prior to the opening of that line, Beijing's No. 5 subway line, which runs through the heart of the city from north to south, opened in October. The raw-coal feeding system and the upward medium current flow in a dense-medium vessel (DMV) are, in addition to the residence time of particles in the separator, important factors for efficient coarse particle separation. The feed material from a raw coal screen and/or pre-wet screen merge with the major volume of circulating medium as push medium, guided by an adjustable submergence baffle plate deep fed into the separator for effective separation. The remaining volume of the circulating medium enters from the purge and drain hoppers at the bottom of the DMV. This generates a gentle upward medium current flow in the separator, which prevents dense medium stratification/settling and merges as part of the push medium. A two-dimensional, two-phase model developed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is used to describe the flow pattern and evaluate the function of the dip plate for understanding the mechanisms of particle separation in the separator. The particle movement in the DMV is also tracked to investigate the major operating parameters affecting the separation performance of the DMV. The simulation results of the DMV separation performance are validated by in-plant test data.

The SDSU tunnel and underground station are the first of these type facilities to be constructed by the Metropolitan Transit Development Board. Because there is no previous experience, and because tunneling activities are associated with some risk, he MTDB has undertaken a very proactive and wide reaching program to identify and control risks during construction. Finally, because the tunneling activity and underground station is on the San Diego State University, MTDB is working closely with their staff to identify construction impacts and mitigation’s, and thus ensure a quality project for both agencies.

The East Side Access (ESA) project is the largest underground rail infrastructure project under construction in New York City, USA. The Manhattan segment of the project is to be mined through rock and consists of 4.1 miles of Tunnel Boring Machine tunnels for track work and mined excavations to house rail switches, air plenums, and other rail facilities. This paper considers different methods for concrete lining, such as the use of fixed forms, adjustable forms, and pneumatically applied shotcrete. The advantages and disadvantages of these methods are discussed and the basis for considering one over the other are illustrated. Further discussions on design development and preparation of documents to facilitate quality and constructability in the field are presented.

The ordinary Portland cement (OPC) is the key pozzalonic component of the concrete mix, widely used as the construction material world-wide. Billions of tons of OPC are used in the construction industry each year. However, calcinations of limestone and silica that produce OPC also produce almost an equal amount of CO2 during the cement manufacturing process. Thus, OPC production accounts for nearly 7% of all anthropogenic CO2 emission each year. The main objective of this study was to develop a geopolymer-based composite to be used as a substitute for OPC in concrete application to significantly lower the carbon foot print of the construction industry. A waste material produced during the coal combustion process was used as the main raw material for the geopolymer-based composite. It was mostly the non-metallic content of the F-type fly ash produced from the combustion of bituminous coal. The authors envisioned to extract some of the valuable metal oxides from fly ash prior to using the major non-metallic portion of the fly ash for geopolymer concrete application. The results obtained from this study exhibited that the compressive strength of the geopolymer concrete compares favorably with that of the conventional concrete prepared using the OPC.

In this study, a process to separate manganese and iron from manganiferous iron ores by reductive acid leaching followed by magnetic separation was conceived and experimentally tested. In the leaching process, sulfuric acid was used as lixiviant and oxalic acid was used as reductant. The experimental results showed that the manganese and iron separation was optimum when the concentration of the sulfuric acid and oxalic acid were 0.75 M and 30 g/L, respectively, at a temperature of 80 °C, a solid/ liquid ratio of 67 g/L, stirring speed of 400 rpm, and leaching duration of 60 min. Under this condition, 90.49% and 6.78% of Mn and Fe were dissolved, respectively, from the ore sample with a size fraction of − 106 μm. It was determined that the leaching of manganese from the ores was a second-order reaction with an activation energy (Ea) of 53.38 kJ/mol. The leaching residues obtained under the optimum condition were subjected to high-intensity wet magnetic separation tests to recover the remaining iron content. This separation process produced a concentrate containing 56.20% Fe and 1.79% Mn with iron and manganese recoveries of 56.83% and 66.73%, respectively. A magnetic separation test from an unleached ore sample was also carried out as a benchmark. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that a magnetic separation process was used to a residue obtained from reductive acid leaching of manganiferous iron ores to recover iron.

The two candidates in the upcoming presidential election in the United States each say that they have their own solution to the nation?s energy problems - solutions that will increase the amount of energy available, lessen the nation?s dependence on foreign sources and reduce the amount of pollution released to the atmosphere. Democratic nominee Sen. Barack Obama and Republican candidate Sen. John McCain both advocate research funding for coal-to-liquids and clean coal technologies. McCain also supports increased oil and gas drilling offshore. And Obama has even made some noises in that direction, although his plan leans heavily on the increased use of renewable energy sources. The energy debate is not new to this election. Congress and whichever party is in the White House has for years been trying to craft a comprehensive energy policy. One difference in this latest debate is that the increased use of nuclear energy has gained more attention. Current President George W. Bush has said he favors the increased use of nuclear power as part of the nation?s energy package. And McCain said he supports the building of more nuclear power plants. Obama has not said much about that. The American public is also showing signs of changing its stance on nuclear energy. To be sure, images of Three Mile Island and Chernobyl are still alive in some minds. However, the American public has said it wants cheaper energy and they want it produced more cleanly. With nuclear, the nation can have both. In the United States, nuclear accounts for slightly less than 20 percent of the electrical power used (see interview with Gary Steele of Energy Fuels on page 27). Globally, that figure is about 15 percent. And there are several nations that derive better than half of their power from nuclear sources. Add to that the world?s increasing need for more energy and the future of nuclear is bright.

"The mineral raw materials industry is a key-component of the Gross Domestic Product of industrialised economies, closely related to both the building and the industrial sectors. Despite this, at local level mining and quarrying are associated with both irreversible environmental damage and several visual alterations affecting the natural landscape. In this sense, SIA (Social Impact Assessment) has become a strategic tool that can not only improve the prediction but also the assessment of the social impact by involving the local communities in a participatory process. Taking into account the SIA experience, together with the examination of some relevant international case studies, it is possible to draw up a list of good practices for mining project management, from exploration through to closure and beyond, with quarry restoration. Such good practices will complement the existing studies, focusing on environmental issues, with the social issues arisen considered in SIA application."

The phenomenon of surfactant adsorption at mineral surfaces is of significant importance in many particulate processes ranging from mineral flotation and enhanced oil recovery to pharmaceutics, paint technology and the casting of high quality ceramics. Stability of the dispersions is related not only to the amount of adsorbed surfactant but also to the structure of the adsorbed surfactant molecules at the interface. This structure greatly depends on the type of surfactant and the hydrophobicity or hydrophilicity of the surface. On hydrophobic surfaces surfactants adsorb regardless of surface charge by van der Waals/hydrophobic inter-actions with hydrocarbon chains accommodated at the surface. On the other hand, on hydrophilic surfaces the surfactants adsorb through electrostatic interactions with their polar moiety fixed at the surface. In the latter case, the electric charge of the surface and surfactant plays a crucial role in the surfactant adsorption process. The recently developed soft-contact Atomic Force Microscopy technique has revealed images of adsorbed surfactant structures at various interfaces. The adsorbed structures of a cationic surfactant (CTAB) and an anionic surfactant (SDS) are presented in this work for different concentrations at hydrophobic graphite and hydrophilic mica surfaces. Different types of micellar arrangements have been observed at these surfaces for surfactant concentrations around the critical micelle concentration. The structures are more ordered and well defined at the graphite surface than at the mica surface. These results have been correlated with the hydrophobicity of the surfaces as revealed by contact angle measurements.

This paper gives a brief overview of impacts of coal blending on coal-fired power plants performance and discuses the preliminary results of an on-going study aimed at evaluating the effect of coal properties on the effectiveness, compatibility and thermal reactivity of coal blends. Plant survey studies reported no significant impacts on an existing plant designed for a high rank coal when switched to a blend of low- and high- rank coal. However, slight modification of some aspects (handling, fuel storage/stockpile, transportation, preparation, and general housekeeping) of plant design and operation may be necessary. The preliminary results of an on-going study at the Mineral Industry Research Laboratory shows that more compatible and better blends could be made from coals where ranks are closer than from those where ranks are far apart.
