GENERAL INTRODUCTION The object of this paper is to discuss those aspects of open pit mine design which are affected by geotechnical factors. The temptation exists for some practitioners of geotechnical engineering to believe that this relatively new engineering discipline is the ‘be all and end all of mining.’ In the opinion of the authors, this is fallacious but, as our ability to put numbers to the behaviour of rocks and soils improves, it is clear that geotechnical engineering will become an integral and important part of designing and operationg mines success- fully. Open pit mines in the context of this paper also includes open cast mines, where the 'ore" is extracted and the waste material is immediately replaced or ' backfilled in the mined portion of the pit. Open pit mines operating today move from very small tonnages a day to in excess of 400,000 tons per day. Several mines are operating and are being designed to capital expenditure for such projects in some cases exceeds five hundred million dollars and in a few cases will exceed one billion dollars. The size of this investment means that financing will have to be provided from banks or joint partnerships. This financial environment means that planning will be carefully scrutinized by experienced representatives of financial institutions or other mining companies. All too often a project has been put in jeopardy because the personal desire of one or two men to make a project proceed has caused incomplete planning or perhaps in some instances deliberately leading observers 'down the garden path.’ In our opinion the day is rapidly arriving when the quality, logic, practicability and completeness of the planning will make the difference between securing financing or not and, in the cases of existing open pit mines, of the difference between survival and closure.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research with the goal of automating underground coal mine roof bolters for greater mine safety. In the project described here, the Bureau has focused on automating the drilling portion of the drilling and bolting cycle. A drill monitoring system designed and developed by Parvus Corp. of Salt Lake City. UT, was placed on a Bureau model roof- bolting drill. The drilling parameters of torque, thrust, rotation rate, penetration rate, and position are monitored through sensors connected to an asynchronous, control-oriented local area network (LAN) that communicates with data-accumulating and data-processing nodes. By placing microprocessors at the two data nodes and at the valve control nodes, and combining these nodes with a personal computer (PC), the monitoring and control system can achieve parallel processing capabilities. Such capabilities are referred to as locally intelligent distributed processing. Only data that have changed significantly are reported through the LAN to a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system mounted on an IBM- compatible 80286 PC. The SCADA system displays the values of the drilling parameters and calculates the specific energy of drilling, which is then used as an indicator of the type of rock being drilled. Besides monitoring the drilling process, an operator at the computer can control the rotation and thrust of the drill from a remote location through the SCADA program and can set drilling parameters on the basis of observed values of the specific energy of drilling.

Self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchangers are conquering the world for reason that they are able to solve any severe fouling problem in indirect heat transfer due to the circulation of cleaning particles through the tubes of vertical shell and tube exchangers. In most cases, these particles consist of chopped metal wire. Moreover, self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchangers perform with excellent heat transfer at very low liquid velocities, which enables completely new designs of conventional shell and tube configurations. This article explains the principle and application of this self-cleaning heat exchange technology and also pays attention to an actual case of a revamp of the severely fouling exchangers of a conventional multi-effect evaporator into a self-cleaning configuration. Possibilities for the revamp of conventional exchangers suffering from massive and very hard scale deposits are found in a variety of metallurgical processes, such as: The refining of nickel, the production of alumina from bauxite and many others.

ABSTRACT The presence of gold in lateritic crusts over mafic and ultramafic volcanogenic complexes in / and greenstohe belts, has called the attention in several parts of Brazil and also in Australia. Recent studies reveal the variety of structures and mineralogy of such crusts, and their importance in correlation with host(bed) rock types, as exploration guides, specially for greenstone belt metallogeny. The expected nature of growth of plates and/or nuggets in such crusts is under detailed study, and is considered as possibly due to dissolution and reprecipitation phenomenae of disseminated-fine-low grade ore in the host rock, in this investigation, laterite geochemistry, though incipiently discussed todate, is of fundamental importance and significance. Lateritic gold can be classified texturally as: dusty and diffused, fine, thin platy, taDular, and nuggets. Such gold is pure, and is often restricted to nodular (pisoliths, ooliths, concretions) forms or the matrix, that constitute the crusts or lateritised gravel beds which have an essentially goetnitic nature. Further this gold is recovered directly by mining the crusts or the adjoining placers with the metal derived from them. The thickness and extension of laterite crust zones is extremely variable depending oh the paleoclimatic conditions, and is conditioned to the favourable lithology and its structural expression. However, the "growth" of gold in these laterites will be conductive , without doubt, to several small scale mining activities, specially in the developing countries and regions limited to latitudes 309N and 309S.

Table I contains the production figures for each of these commodities in the United States and the world. Specifications for concentrates or final mineral product are also summarized as well as prim for them at the time the section was written. In each chapter an attempt has been made to provide the reader with information on the common commercial mineral or minerals involved with the commodity, some of the uses. the processes used to recover and concentrate the minerals, as well as geographical areas where these process are utilized.

Utah produces a wide variety of industrial rock and mineral commodities, valued in 1998 at $534 million (28 percent of the total non-fuel mineral production of Utah). Major commodities produced in 1998 include: halite; potash and magnesium chloride; Portland cement; sand and gravel; car- bonates including lime, limestone, and dolomite; phosphate; crushed stone; clays; perlite; gypsum; and sulfur and sulfuric acid. Commodities produced in lesser amounts include: diatomite; pumice; silica; lightweight aggregate; gemstones, ornamental stone, and mineral and fossil specimens; byproduct sulfur and sulfuric acid; silica; and building stone. The years 1993 through 1998 were a period of steady growth in industrial rock and mineral production. However, some commodities have grown much more rapidly than others. The robust western U.S. economy has stimulated production of construction-related commodities like sand and gravel, raw materials for Portland cement, lime, and building stone, resulting in exploration for raw materials, development of new quarries, and expansion of existing plants. Noteworthy specific developments include: (1) opening of new aggregate operations and buyouts of small aggregate operations by large national and international firms, (2) expansion of a lime operation and two cement plants, and (3) development of several new gypsum mines. The future of the industrial minerals industry in Utah looks promising despite a more restrictive regulatory environment and a growing anti-development attitude among its citizens. While Utah has become less pro-development than it was prior to the 1990s, it is still moderate compared to strongly anti-development states, so companies have some motivation to choose Utah in their strategic mineral development plans. As long as the western states' economies continue to grow, Utah's industrial minerals industry should thrive.

Nature of Empirical Calculations The size reduction of large tonnages of ore and rock is an operation of great magnitude. It is a necessary and important part of industry. Its development has been motivated by practical need and has followed the path of an industrial art without much help from theoretical science. Knowledge has been accumulated from experience. Trial and error established the methods; then collected data were tabulated and served as the basis for empirical equations that have been continually modi¬fied and amplified as new data became available. These equations now constitute the bulk of our present knowledge of comminution. There is no accepted scientific theory that is basic to comminution. In electrical, mechanical, and civil engineering, as well as in many other industrial activities, such theories exist and are extremely help¬ful, but rock is essentially heterogeneous, and the zones of weakness that control its breakage are thoroughly diversified. No theory has yet been discovered which can account for the variability of rock, although many attempts have been made. Empirical equations tell nothing of the why of a phenomenon, but if they are properly derived they can tell much about the how. They always represent only an approximation of behavior but never a law. In a proper empirical equation a symbol is assigned for each of the variable quantities that obviously affect the relationship. In a grinding mill these include mill diameter, mill speed, and feed rate among them. In setting up and revising an empirical equation the cardinal princi¬ple in establishing and modifying it is this: any change must be strictly ascribed to the variable which caused it. A useful empirical equation is rendered useless when a change in any convenient coefficient or exponent is made to make it fit a particular set of data, without certainty that the altered coefficient or exponent is the responsible variable in the new data. Such indiscriminate revisions have brought the use of empirical equations into some disrepute. When existing equations are changed to accommodate new data it is a good rule to make a change which gives results intermediate between the new and the old. A halfway point is usually a good choice.

Computer controlled drilling is now proven technology. It was first introduced by the development of the Furuholmen system for a prototype three boom tunneling jumbo in Norway in 1978. Now, 13 rigs with this concept are in operation in Europe, 3. in mining in England and. 10 in tunneling elsewhere in Europe. The system is also adapted to roadheader guidance. Practical experience has shown that the computer control system makes it possible to drive tunnels with a more accurate contour thus reducing the total amount of rock excavated, and where a full concrete lining is required a reduction in concrete volume is achieved. The total tunneling economy is improved. In the future we expect to see a wider range of instrumentation on jumbos, from the simple direction instruments to computer guidance systems for monitoring only, as well as fully automatic drilling to a programmed drilling pattern. More compact and reliable electronics will be available. Systems with low power consumption will fit easily into flameproof applications. Cabling complexity will be reduced by connection of sensors to serial signal lines.

The Inter-Island Tunnel is one of two undersea tunnels which are part of the Boston Harbor Clean-Up Program. The tunnel is 7.7 km (25,160 ft) long, bored to a 4.3 m (14 ft) diameter in the Cambridge Argillite Formation and was finished to a 3.5 m (11.5 ft) diameter final concrete lining. The owner is the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) who is a regional authority responsible for overall design and construction. The tunnel's primary purpose is the transport of untreated effluent from Nut Island facility in Quincy, MA to the new treatment plant at Deer Island. Two sludge lines are installed for the transport of sludge from Deer Island to Nut Island. During construction the contractor encountered fault zones, fractured strata, and soft ground tunnel sections which liberated more ground water than was originally anticipated by the project designer. Ground water was controlled during mining and the placing of the final lining. The final lining of cast-in-place concrete had to be backfill grouted to cut off water inflows and provide contact for equal tunnel loading which is critical in long-term design. This paper deals with an engineered backfill grouting system which was the first of its type to be used in North America. It discusses the geological conditions encountered, the design criteria used in the evaluation process, and an indepth review of the various system components. It demonstrates how contractors can use knowledgeable and professional industry suppliers to solve difficult construction problems.

The air in three U.S. underground coal mines has been sampled. The data developed show the relative importance of the various pollutants and quantify the need for control. Total respirable particulate matter (TRPM) was found to be the critical pollutant (the one requiring the most dilution for control). TRPM is considered to be "respirable coal dust" by procedures approved for sampling in U.S. underground coal mines. However, this "respirable coal dust" also includes diesel particulate matter (DPM) and particulate from other sources. While "respirable coal dust" was the critical pollutant, Raman spectroscopic analysis showed that more than half of this "respirable coal dust" was DPM. The DPM in the samples ranged from 22 to 152% of the 2 mg/m3 limit for respirable coal dust. Thus DPM was the critical pollutant using the 2 mg/m3 respirable coal dust limit. SO2 gas produced by the combustion of diesel fuel containing sulfur was the second-most critical pollutant. Characteristic curve slope (CCS) values were calculated to determine the quantitites of the various pollutants generated per unit of diesel haulage activity. Mine 1 had the highest TRPM CCS values with 29 mg/m3/%C02 for the Ramcar and 57 mg/m3/%C02 for the Haulageway location. The highest coal particulate CCS measured was 30 mg/m3/%CO2 and the highest diesel particulate CCS measured was 27 mg/m3/ %C02. Both of these high values were measured in the Mine 1 haulageway location. Calculations were made to determine the controlling CO2 concentrations (CCC) at which all other measured pollutants would be within their limits. These CCC values, which, for the mines sampled, were based on TRPM, varied from a low of about 0.07% for the Mine 1 haulageway location, to a high of about 0.15% for the Mine 2 Ramcar and haulageway locations. Weekly average CO2 concentrations measured in these mines ranged from 0.09 to 0.11 % for the Ramcar, from 0.05 to 0.09% for the haulageway, and from 0.08 to 0.11 % for the return. The concentrations of TRPM ranged from 1 and 2 mg/m3 in mine areas frequented by personnel, and to greater than 4 mg/m3 in returns where personnel are not exposed.

Native sulfur deposits in Poland occur in Upper Miocene strata on the northern (platform) border of the Carpathian foredeep. Systematic exploration since 1953 has resulted in the discovery of seven stratifom-stratibound sulfur-bearing limestone deposits that together contain about 0.6 billion tons of demonstrated sulfur reserves and about 0.5 billion tons of inferred and hypothetical resources. One open pit and three Frasch mines are currently in operation; another is under construction and one has been abandoned. Total production is about five million tons per year from ore containing on the average about 25% sulfur. Field, isotope, and micropaleontological data indicate that the sulfur-bearing limestone was formed through the bacterial reduction of gypsum in the presence of methane discharged from source beds and traps in the Carpathian foredeep. Subsequent recrystallization of the sulfur-bearing limestone, tectonic activity, jointing, karstification, and partial leaching of the sulfur has transformed the sulfur deposits and has altered the thickness and content of the sulfur-bearing strata, and their porosity and permeability, affecting the productivity and water consumption of the sulfur wells. Caputerized borehole logging techniques and geostatistical reserve estimates are used in mine planning. Great environmental impact constrains the development of sulfur mines.

"For a long time, the recultivation of depleted opencast mines and operating systems was aimed at restoring the original state. The focus, as desired by policy-makers and the local population alike, was on restoring high-quality agricultural land and on creating reforested areas of value that suit their location. Until the turn of the millennium, recultivation measures were only rarely the subject matter of public planning processes beyond these general objectives. They were never regarded as nucleus and origin of sustainable structural developments. The rehabilitation of inactive lignite opencast mines in central and eastern Germany brought about a change in mind-set that understood recultivation to be a unique opportunity to completely redesign a landscape and gear it towards the future in the Rhenish mining area as well. The ""Inden residual lake"" and ""terra nova"" projects, planned in the last 10 years in cooperation with policy-makers and authorities, are two undertakings that provide sustainable structural impetus for the future today."

3.1 INTRODUCTION As heap leach precious metal projects become increasingly common in the United States, federal, state and local regulatory agencies are beginning to take a closer look at the short- and long-term environmental consequences of this recovery technology. From an operator's point of view, there is seemingly a confusing regulatory maze to be navigated and a plethora of permits and approvals to be obtained prior to commissioning a heap leach operation. The degree of difficulty associated with obtaining permits for a heap leach project depends largely upon the state in which the project is located. Permit acquisition is generally easiest in those states most familiar with heap leaching technology. For example, heap leaching is well understood in Nevada, and heap leach operations are relatively easy to permit, although permitting conditions in Nevada have recently become more stringent. However, many states are just beginning to become familiar with heap leach operations. Many of these states such as Idaho, Colorado, South Dakota, Oregon, Montana, Washington and South Carolina are in the process of drafting regulations and establishing guidelines for heap leach projects. In most cases, these regulations specify design and operating criteria as well as reclamation and decommissioning procedures. This chapter provides an overview of the regulatory and permitting aspects of heap leach operations. Permitting requirements for projects developed on federal land are discussed in detail. 'The state and local regulatory atmosphere and permitting requirements for various states are also presented. The chapter concludes with a generic permitting strategy. 3.2 KEY ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS The primary concern of most local, state, and federal regulatory agencies is the use, storage and transport of sodium cyanide (NaCn), and potential cyanide contamination of surface and groundwater resources. The toxicity of cyanide to people, fish and wildlife is also an important issue. Unfortunately, in the public eye, cyanide heap leaching has some emotional impacts similar to those associated with radioactivity and uranium mining. This perception and the general lack of understanding of cyanide can lead to unnecessary concern about cyanide contamination, further complicating the regulatory environment.

Situated in Ireland’s capital, the three mile long, 40 ft diameter twin tunnel project encounters a range of ground conditions using TBM, Shield, Cut & Cover with diaphragm walling and major slope stabilisation and Multi-jacked pipe techniques. During the past decade, since the appearance of Popoff's (1966) review of grade tonnage calculations, it has become evident that defining a new method which could be followed step by step by a technician and which would improve reserve estimation was not a simple thing to do. Some concepts have emerged though, and most definitions of ore reserve now require a statement of reliability (USGS, 1975; and Zwarten-dyke, 1976). Exactly how the reliability should be computed is not a straightforward process. It also became apparent that not only was reliability a requirement but that additional questions such as how to predict mining re- serves from geological reserves were to be asked. In fact what became obvious is that specific models have to be designed for each type of mine and for each type of question which is asked. Most methods can be encased within a unique general geostatistical, model, but it takes considerable custom tailoring, and there are still questions that are left unanswered. In this chapter, before giving techniques, we intend to first review what should be required from a grade tonnage calculation done at the exploration stage. If the final objective is still to specify a tonnage and grade, with eventually a reliability, many qualifications have to be made before quoting, and of course, calculating these two numbers. Then the currently avail- able methods will be reviewed and future trends will be shown; finally a few case studies will be given and recommendations about the choice of a model will be made.

INTRODUCTION Gaudin (1), considered that "the mechanism of mineral collection is the central problem of flotation theory". From their work on adsorption phenomena in flotation for more than fifty years (2), Gaudin and his co-workers have made major contributions to the elucidation of this mechanism, a fact acknowledged by their contemporaries in the field (e.g. (3)). Their investigations in a number of areas, e.g. demonstrating that submonolayer quantities of adsorbed collector species can induce flotation, or identifying the influence of substances which can activate or depress (1), have helped to provide the basis for and the development of a theory to account for the interaction between mineral and collector. It was established in the late fifties (4) that the presence of oxygen is a prerequisite for the flotation of metal sulfides with thiol collectors. This fact rendered inadequate the concept of simple ion adsorption being responsible for rendering these minerals hydrophobic. The requirement for oxygen has been explained (1) in terms of this species being a component in chemical reactions between the sulfide surface and the collector. Gaudin has been instrumental in identifying the products of chemical reactions at sulfide minerals (1.5), a line of work which has been continued particularly by Finkelstein and co-workers in South Africa (6). "The mining industry is a tough business. The obstacles faced in attempting to run a mine - much less build a new one - go beyond an orebody’s geology. There was a time when commodity prices dictated whether or not to build or expand a mine. Today, though, the challenges faced by miners include social responsibility, environmental regulations and a myriad of needed permits on several governmental levels that every miner knows will be challenged by opponents every step of the way. With all of those challenges, and others not mentioned here, it’s a wonder anyone would stay in the industry. But they do. In fact, more than 2,100 mining professionals from around the world gathered in Reno, NV last December for the American Exploration and Mining Association’s (AEMA) annual conference. That is an impressive number, considering that commodity prices remain in the doldrums, preventing companies from building many new mines and limiting expansions at existing ones. Even so, attending such a conference allows these mining industry pros to learn new and more efficient ways to operate their mines and plants through the dozens of technical presentations the conference offered. And mingling with their peers provided another avenue for learning. The AEMA conference also attracted many of the industry’s leading equipment and service providers (228 exhibitors in 246 booths). Technical presentationsThe AMEA meeting is known for its variety of high quality technical presentations and the 2014 conference was no exception. Some of the topics include new technologies in surface and underground mining, explorers and emerging producers, mine closure and remediation, regulations and reserves reporting, hydrology and new innovations in mining. This paper presents the results of an investigation into the effect of pore pressure regime on the factor of safety (FS) and the anticipated critical failure mechanism for a fly ash storage facility. In this study, pore pressure measurements from standpipe piezometers and pore pressure estimated from seepage analysis were used for a comparison of the estimated FS for a fly ash slope. This comparison was applied for static and seismic scenarios. To account for the uncertainties resulting from the limited data available and support a qualitative risk assessment evaluation, a probabilistic analysis was performed. The slope stability analysis was conducted in 2D and 3D, adopting the limit equilibrium analysis approach, and a finite element seepage analysis. The results suggest consistency of failure surfaces for 2D and 3D and an increase in FS values of 5 percent for the 3D approach, limitations of standpipe piezometers. The study demonstrated the sensitivity of the FS value, and the implication of adopting representative material properties, and water table levels, especially in cases where limited data are available, and assumptions need to be made to assess the long-term stability of a fly ash dam facility.

"With decades of development and exploitation of coal resources, the first batch of coal-based cities in China are faced with the challenge of economic shrinkage and environment deterioration due to the rapid resource exhaustion and single industrial structure. Nowadays, as a policy instrument for sustainable development, a nationwide circular economy mode has been implemented during the design and planning of new coal mines to address the challenges arising from economic depression, energy shortage and environmental pollution. It should be mentioned that several national coal bases and most of constructing and planning coal mines are located in the underdeveloped areas in the Midwest of China which means that the distance between supply source for energy resources and the demand market is significantly increased. Moreover, the eco-environment vulnerability in these rural areas should be taken into serious consideration. Therefore, after comparison and analysis with several successful coals based and diversified circular industry chains, this paper presents a case study on the circular economy park (CEP) in the northwest of Shanxi Province. Through discussion and evaluation of ‘1+3’ mode in the CEP, this paper aims to enhance the understanding of coal mine sustainable development and shed light on the relationship between resources exploitation and local economic development.1. Introduction Earth's fossil energy resources are crucial to both economic prosperity and human well-being. Taking coal mining and consumption as an example, coal has been widely used to generate electricity since the 1880s, and more than 40% of the electricity globally is provided by coal nowadays. However, as one of the largest worldwide anthropogenic sources of carbon dioxide releases (39% of global CO2 emissions), the extensive excavation and utilization of coal have brought a series of side effects to both natural environment and human health (Wikipedia 2017). As the largest coal producer and consumer in the world, China is leading the list over the past decade (as shown in Figure 1) (BP 2016). The excavation and utilization of coal resources have made a crucial impact and irreplaceable contributions to China’s industrial development and economic prosperity (Long and Zhang 2009). However, most of the air pollution in China are also attributed to the simplified and extensive exploitation of coal resources, e.g., 90% of SO2, 67% of NO, 70% of smoke ashes, and 70% of CO2 in 2016. In recent years, most of North China and the developed coastal areas were wreathed by smog due largely to the oversimplified extensive utilization of coal, suggesting that the development patterns of coal utilization need to be reshaped so that both the biosphere and humanity could thrive equally."
