"The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response (MINER) Act included the need for improved chemical technologies to address respiratory protective device inadequacies and refuge alternative development. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL) invests in research and development to improve the carbon dioxide (CO2) scrubbing technologies built into these mine safety systems. Testing at NIOSH NPPTL is performed using a custom-designed test system containing a chemical reactor and sensors in a constant flow of simulated expired breath to evaluate chemical performance for the scrubber materials. Current testing procedures focus on device duration or capacity, but do not report criteria needed to effectively optimize chemical performance. In this presentation, testing results which identify the chemical performance roles for CO2 scrubber components will be reported, and specific component chemical activities will be linked to both duration and CO2 absorption capacities. Chemical components being evaluated include hydroxyl, superoxides, metal, and amine active sites, distributed in salts, zeolites, metal-organic frameworks, and microporous materials. INTRODUCTION CO2 absorbents and oxygen sources are at the heart of closed circuit breathing air supply systems used in mining escape and rescue operations. CO2 absorbent technology was first developed for diving rebreathers and has been in use for over a century. Typically these devices include a soda lime formulation of pellets in the 8-12 mesh range. Larger 4-8 mesh particles are used in medical grade “low-flow” applications, since these particles present a lower flow resistance regime more amenable for use with resting individuals. Potassium superoxide and lithium hydroxide formulations are also used, where in each case the formulations involve bulk solid pellets or materials affixed to surfaces. CO2 capture technologies are now under intensive study in the energy and automotive industries, where the pursuit of optimal combustion processes has led to the development of new materials to capture, convert and store CO2, oxygen and carbon monoxide gases. Recent advances in nano-structured and high surface area catalysis have produced novel materials demonstrating chemical performance improvements in these industries, and these improvements may now also be adapted to enhance chemical efficiency and performance in escape and rescue devices. Higher surface area materials offer promise for improving the efficiency, or decreasing the burdens associated with the use of closed circuit respiratory protective devices containing CO2 absorbents. Novel chemicals that display advantages in chemical performance or decreased burden will be examined for inclusion in developing systems such as the next-generation closed-circuit mining escape respirator or refuge alternatives."

"Float coal dust is produced by various mining methods, carried by ventilating air and deposited on the floor, roof, and ribs of mine airways. If deposited float dust is re-entrained during a methane explosion, without sufficient inert rock dust quantities, this float coal dust can propagate an explosion throughout mining entries. Consequently, controlling float coal dust is of critical interest to mining operations. Rock dusting—adding inert material to airway surfaces—is the main control technique currently utilized by the coal mining industry to reduce the float coal dust explosion hazard. To assist the industry in reducing this hazard, NIOSH’s Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) initiated a project to investigate methods and technologies to reduce float coal dust in underground coal mines through prevention, capture, and suppression prior to deposition. Field characterization studies were performed to determine quantitatively the sources, types, and amounts of dust produced during various coal mining processes. The operations chosen for study were a continuous miner section, a longwall section, and a coal handling facility. For each of these operations, the primary dust sources were confirmed to be the continuous mining machine, longwall shearer, and conveyor belt transfer points, respectively. Respirable and total airborne float dust samples were collected and analyzed for each operation and the ratio of total airborne float coal dust to respirable dust was calculated. During the continuous mining process, the ratio of total airborne float coal dust to respirable dust ranged from 10.3 to 13.8. The ratios measured on the longwall face were between 18.5 and 21.5. The total airborne float coal dust to respirable dust ratio observed during belt transport ranged between 7.5 and 21.8. INTRODUCTION During the extraction of coal, various dusts are produced that can be classified into two categories of interest: respirable and float coal dust. Respirable dust (diameter 10.0 = µm) has the capability to penetrate beyond the terminal bronchioles and become deeply embedded into the human lungs, leading towards respiratory disease complications (Potts et al., 1990). Float coal dust is defined as coal dust having a diameter less than 74 µm (Harris et al., 2009). During the mining process, float coal dust can be deposited on the floor, roof, and ribs of mine airways. With the proper mixture of methane gas (between 5% and 15%) and an ignition source, a methane gas explosion can occur (Barker and Humphreys, 1996). The resulting explosion can develop a pressure wave which lifts the deposited float coal dust material into the air, propagating a disastrous coal mine explosion (Harris et al., 2010). The current technique to safeguard against the propagation of a coal mine explosion is to treat the mine airways with incombustible rock dust (typically limestone), maintaining an 80% total incombustible content of the deposited material. NIOSH initiated a project to investigate control technologies that could be aimed at reducing the amount of float coal dust allowed to deposit in the mine airways using three approaches: prevention, capture, and suppression prior to deposition. Reducing the float coal dust being generated during the mining processes and capturing or suppressing airborne float coal dust prior to deposition would in turn increase the efficiency of the applied rock dust used to prevent mine explosions."

To meet the growing need for CO2 capture and storage technology, Michigan Technological University is researching CO2 capture and storage using carbonate solutions. The objective of the present study was to increase the absorption rate of CO2 into the carbonate solution without reducing the absorption capacity of the solution. This approach used a polypropylene glycol methyl ether (PPGME) as a surfactant to chemically alter the gas bubble size. Experiments were conducted to study the absorption rate of CO2 at varying surfactant concentrations of 0, 0.12, 0.24, 0.36 and 0.48 g/L. Results showed that as the concentration of surfactant increased in solution, the absorption rate also increased. The CO2 absorption rate increased from 3.45 mmol/min CO2 at 0 g/L PPGME to 3.92 mmol/min CO2 at 0.48 g/L PPGME. This amounted to a 14% increase in the CO2 absorption rate with no decrease in absorption capacity of the solution.

Cohesive clay soil poses a significant risk to earth pressure balance tunnel boring machines (EPBM) due to unstable face pressure, clogging potential, high cutterhead torque, poor muck flow, low advance rate, etc. This paper details the performance measures desired when EPBM tunneling in clay soil, and the scientifically-supported conditioning methods to transform in-situ clay to a muck with such characteristics, giving particular attention to ground conditions. The paper then examines TBM data from multiple clay soil projects in the context of these performance measures to demonstrate the influence of cohesive soil conditioning on EPBM performance.

The Westerschelde Tunnel is located in the south of the Netherlands and links the two parts of the Provinces of Zeeland, Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and Zuid-Beveland, which are separated by the Westerschelde. Road traf?c has up till now taken the detour via Belgium or crossed by ferry. This unsatisfactory transport link signifies major economic disadvantages above all for Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. The first fixed link for road traffic between the communities of Terneuzen and Borsele are to be created by means of the two 6.6 km long tunnel tubes down to 65 m below sea level.

In 1961. American Smelting and Refining Company was conducting exploration for lead in southeastern Missouri using several geophysical methods. Electrical methods were used in almost every hole drilled during this period. These methods met with only limited success, with one exception. This paper deals with that exception: An Electrical Potential Method used at a single hole to indicate direction to better mineralization. This method was notably successful in the program.

Prior to April, 1961, the coal charge to Clairtonts coke oven batteries was 3" x 0" mine waslied coal having approximately 6.0% to 7.0% moisture. Even at this size and moisture content, the arching, rat-holing and hang-up was excessive and the effective live storage of coal was only 60% to 70% of the rated capacity of the coal bunkers, depending upon the moisture of the coal. In addition, many production delays were encountered in the time and methods required to fill the larry cars. The need for an improved metallurgical coke led to the introduction of pulverized coal to a portion of the plant in 196 1. When the full potential of the pulverizing equipment was realized, we were able to serve seven batteries in our second unit of batteries with pulverized coal through two coal bunkers. The discharge hoppers of these bunkers were equipped with air vibrators to assist the flow of pulverized coal into the larry cars. The vibrators were helpful in this respect but required considerable maintenance and caused damage to the bin plates.

The construction mineral aggregates industry--the largest industry on a tonnage basis--is threatened with large shortages in the near future. Ironically, these common minerals which include sand, gravel, and stone are among the most plentiful in the earth's crust. However, as these minerals are low in value and used in large volumes, they are extremely sensitive to transport cost, e.g., a haul of 20 miles doubled the delivered cost of mineral aggregates. Consequently, these minerals must be located close to points of demand to have economic usefulness. But the development of new deposits is virtually impossible near many urban areas for legal, sociological and economic reasons. The spector of unfinished urban transport systems, curtailed residential construction, and a general deterioration of the physical urban plant, looms as a direct consequent of future mineral aggregate shortages in the U. S. metropolitan areas. The shortages of mineral aggregates in the Greater New York Metropolitan Area (G.N.Y.M.A.) are prototypical of the shortages faced by the U. S. Metropolitan areas. This paper presents an economic analysis of the consequences of not considering the broad aspects of conservation economics as a major component of resource management. The needless annual cost for the G.N.Y.M.A. is shown to be $30 million.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a group of chlorinated chemicals that were used in many different fire resistant hydraulic fluids, heat transfer fluids, and in electrical equipment as dielectric liquids. PCBs were manufactured primarily by Monsanto Chemical Company under the tradename Aroclor, and were used by many different electrical equipment manufacturers. PCBs are noted chiefly for their extreme chemical inertness. This resulted in exceptional fire resistance and long life in applications involving exposure to high temperatures and intense electrical fields. This combination of properties resulted in PCBs being widely used in electrical equipment used in mines, including transformers, capacitors, and some electric motors. PCBs were also used as working fluids in some heat transfer and hydraulic sys terns. The same chemical resistance that gave PCBs long life in industrial applications give PCBs essantially eternal life when they are released into the environment. PCBs are not highly toxic in the sense that exposure does not cause immediate health problems. However, PCBs accumulate in the human body and neither degrade nor are eliminated from the body, and long-term exposure to PCBs can result in changes in liver function which may increase susceptibility to the carcinogenic effects of other chemicals. PCBs also accumulate in the food chain; the concentration of PCBs in fresh water fish may be several hundred thousand times as high as in the water the fish are taken from.

The establishment of a retreat system of longwall mining in this submarine coal field has been under study for many years and, although in special cases there have been limited local applications of this method of mining, there has been no attempt until quite recently to establish a uniform system of longwall retreating' in this area (see Figure 1) Where retreat walls were established, it was strictly as a result of physical, rather than economic conditions. In some of the operations- of the Corporation, where the coal was liable to spontaneous combustion- or the area subject to bumps as in No. 2 Mine of the Cumberland Railway and Coal Company in Springhills the recovery of the coal on a retreat system was more or less a necessity.

This paper presents the results of 18 high-G centrifuge tests performed at the Electric Power Research Institute's Coal Cleaning Test Facility in January 1985. These tests, using -28 mesh (0.6mm) froth flotation product, show that the high-G, solid-bowl centrifuge can produce clean-coal moistures of less than 12 percent at solids recovery rates exceeding 98 percent. The high-G centrifuge achieved these low moistures by applying centrifugal forces up to 2,000 times gravity. Because these forces are two to three times the forces used in a screen-bowl centrifuge, the high-G centrifuge can use a solid bowl and still produce a low-moisture product. The solid bowl captures ultrafines that would pass through a screen bowl, and thus obtains higher recovery rates than a screen-bowl centrifuge.

These improvements allow manufacturers to increase the speeds of the impacting members Most of the more common forms of size reductions, such as percussion, pressure, friction and sectioning, or cutting were at one time accomplished by human hands. These actions were transferred to machinery. Originally of limited application, their use widened as industrial materials and construction became more sophisticated.

In today's world coal market, coal quality is becoming increasingly important. Often the coal quality parameters are one of the crucial considerations in the development of a coal mine. Because of the user's tighter specifications and because of strict environmental regulations, coal producers are being called on to predict with increasing accuracy, not only the quality of their product but also the variability of that quality. This area of reserve evaluation is naturally receiving a great deal of scrutiny. Consolidation Coal Company has developed reliable and sophisticated methods for predicting coal quality, but the company's efforts continue to search for even better techniques. One third of the world's and most US kaolin is produced from Late Cretaceous and Early Tertiary sedimentary strata in Georgia and South Carolina. The kaolin is part of a belt extending to Arkansas of aluminous lateritic deposits, including bauxite. Original sediments were profoundly altered by chemical weathering during Early Tertiary time. Mining exploits those uncommon deposits where extreme leaching and chemical recombination have produced a clay of nearly pure mineral kaolinite. . Its whiteness, brightness, fine particle size, platelet shape, surface chemistry, and chemical composition make kaolin an important pigment, filler, extender and chemical compound in the paper, paint, plastics, ceramics and catalyst industries.

The purpose of this paper is to summarize the role of water resource monitoring in mining activities and to discuss the considerations that go into designing and implementing a monitoring program. The design of a monitoring program is invariably based on sound engineering and scientific judgement since no design formulas exist that can be universlly applied to the monitoring of all activities. As discussed in this paper, however, a methodology of designing a water resource monitoring program does exist. In order to cost-effectively monitor the water resource impacts of mining activities, the following three monitoring related items should be understood: 1. the role of water resource monitoring in the planning, construction, and operational stages of mine development, 2. the available water resources monitoring methods and the proper role of each method in the various scages of mine development, and 3. the strategies that should be followed in designing and implementing a water resource monitoring program.

"Mining makes civilization possible. It also creates socio-environmental liabilities forcing us to ask how much more of this mining can our planet support. It is clear that the future of mining differs from mining in the future. The laws of nature are being compromised by mining. This paper studies the problems at the core of the mining business which need to be addressed. What kind of mining will serve our existence with nature on this planet? What kind of mining perspectives are we able to formulate without having negative effects for future generations? Is mining technologically sustainable? The values of predictions, imagination, and creativity must be integrated to define what mining should be. Those values should be in the technologies necessary to restoring equilibrium of nature (Geomimic) as well as in complete extraction of metals, better utilization of the mineral reserves, and design the usage of metals to recycle. The purpose of this research is to examine many views and perspectives for future generations and to accelerate the pace of innovation of having mining without socio-environmental liabilities by design and by understanding nature. INTRODUCTION The future of mining is being stifled by many antiquated and stagnant attitudes and policies by the industry and society as a whole. The time is now or never for real action and education against these attitudes and to upgrade them to meet the current needs of this planet if we are to survive. Doing this will prove that we understand and respect nature for us and our posterity. It will also show a positive assessment that the mining process can be reversed before the point of no return. And that is to say, only if reversibility is still an option. It may not be anymore but it’s worth a try. We need to use our imagination and engineering know-how to come up with new proposals to change the core of mining. It would entail re-engineering. There is a profound difference between the future of mining and mining in the future. The future of mining is the continuation and persistence of past practices in the industry and expecting new results. Mining in the future requires a paradigm shift for extraction through modern thinking about mining as it pertains nature. The new paradigm for mining in the future would restore equilibrium with nature. Always keep in mind the connection of mining to nature. What is the future of nature? To predict mining in the future we need to use past experiences in mining and our knowledge of modern science and engineering to formulate a prototype that will enhance mining while maintaining equilibrium with nature. Mining and protecting nature are not mutually exclusive. This new prototype has nothing to do with the level of bonding or insurance that the mining industry can legally provide. The goal of this paper is to contribute some new ideas to help transform the mining industry based on the laws of nature and its limitations. Using this new prototype we will develop the following 1. Extraction of minerals Reserves-Dimensions-Technologies 2. Usage of mineral resources-Manufacture’s products designed to be reused and recycled 3. Nature- Equilibrium (physical, chemical and biological)"

In the Western Coal Region, successful reclamation of surface-mined areas includes the protection of groundwater sources. To accomplish this, a complete understanding of the geohydrology of the affected area is imperative. Successful mine design also calls for careful attention to geohydrology. Because the Western Coal Region is semi-arid land used mainly for farming and grazing, groundwater is a particularly sensitive topic. It is especially sensitive where the lignite scheduled for mining is itself the aquifer supplying the farms and ranches. Such is the case throughout much of the Western Coal Region, particularly where there are no near-surface sand and gravel aquifers that are commonly found in the glaciated portions of the Region. Just as mining can adversely affect groundwater supply, so can groundwater adversely affect mining. Mine flooding and highwall instability are examples of this. But, mine operators must realize that procedures they use to remedy geohydrologically-related mining problems can have a dramatic effect upon ground- water conditions in areas adjacent to the mine. A logical precaution is to require the acquisition of complete baseline data prior to making the first cut. We recommend that the mining plan not only incorporate the reclamation plan, but that they be developed as one plan.

For achieving bulk economic excavation, large dump trucks are being used in majority of the earth moving operations resulting in high impact shovel loading operations (HISLO) which exposes the operators to high levels of whole body vibrations (WBV). As the truck ages, hydro-pneumatic suspension struts loses their capability to effectively attenuate the vibration. A system is required to monitor and predict the performance of the suspension struts in real time. Machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) has been applied for modeling and predicting the suspension system performance for lighter/smaller vehicles. However, no work has been done to implement machine learning or AI for modelling and predicting the performance of hydro-pneumatic struts in large dump trucks. Therefore, current work is going to be a pioneering effort towards developing machine learning and AI models for solving this problem. Support vector machine (SVM) and regularized dual non-linear regression has been implemented in order to achieve the goal. 3D virtual simulator for CAT793D was used to conduct experiments in MSC.ADMAS environment. The two main recorded outputs were the RMS accelerations in the vertical and horizontal directions at the operator seat for characterizing the performance of the suspension system. During the development and the training of the models, eighty percent (80%) of the total experimental data was used and the remaining 20% was used during the testing and validation of the developed models. SVM model showed the desired accuracy in terms of hydro-pneumatic suspension system performance prediction for large dump trucks. These models can be implemented in the dump truck controller which can then be used to monitor the performance of the suspension system in real-time, and with that proper maintenance and/or replacement can be scheduled by the maintenance personnel. Workplace safety, operator’s health and the overall system efficiency can be greatly improved with an implementation of such an intelligent system. INTRODUCTION Large capacity dump trucks are being employed in any earth moving operation throughout the world for achieving bulk economic excavation [1, 2]. A large dynamic impact force is produced with large capacity shovels dumping material weighing 100 tons or more in to the dump truck under gravity. This dynamic impact force generates high frequency shockwaves which travels throug0068 the truck body, chassis and reaches the operator’s cabin and thus exposes the operator to severe levels of whole body vibrations (WBV). Recommended safe limits have been listed by the International Standards Organization (ISO) in sections 1, 2, 4 and 5 of ISO 2631 (1997, 2003, 2001 and 2004). An operator can got through a long term back, shoulders, arms and neck disability and disorders if exposed to the WBV levels beyond those limits. The dynamic impact force generated as a result of the high impact shovel loading operations (HISLO) was modelled by Ali and Frimpong [2]. Furthermore, the complete methodology for optimizing the dumping process and reducing the impact force has been provided by Ali and Frimpong [1]. The vibration attenuation system present in the dump truck requires improvement in addition to the dumping process optimization. The vibration attenuation system in the dump truck commonly consists of hydro-pneumatic suspension struts. As the dump truck ages, its suspension system deteriorates and therefore loses its capability to effectively attenuate the shockwaves and the resulting vibrations produced by the dumping process. The deterioration tales place due to the contamination of the hydraulic oil or oil and nitrogen mixing or due to the gas accumulator diaphragm rupturing. The monitoring of the output vibration levels can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of any suspension system. During in situ uranium mining using ammonium bicarbonate lixiviant, the ammonium exchanges with cations on the ore's clay. Mter mining is complete, the ammonium may desorb into post-leach ground water. For the particular ore studied, other chemicals (i.e., uranium and selenium) which are mobilized during the leach process, have also been found in the post-leach ground water. Laboratory column tests, used to simulate the leaching process, have shown that aluminum chloride can rapidly remove ammonium from the ore and thus greatly reduce the subsequent ammonium leakage level into ground water. The aluminum chloride has also been found to reduce the leakage levels of uranium and selenium. In addition, the aluminum chloride treatment produces a rapid improvement in permeability.
