What is your assessment of the current state of the minerals industry? It is no understatement that domestic mining is facing a severe crisis at this time. The sharp decline in commodity prices and demand is putting a great strain on domestic and worldwide mining, causing major declines in profits and market capital of mining companies. This, in turn, has lead to major production cuts, layoffs, shut-downs of operating properties, and the deferral of new and expansion projects. These changes in the minerals industry have played a major role in the health of the economy. Operationally, the industry continues to develop new technologies that are making our work more efficient, more cost effective and more environmentally acceptable and safe. During downturns like this, companies generally pay closer attention to operational efficiencies and process optimization. Historically, new technologies and processes tend to be developed during down markets, and I believe we will see the same thing as companies strive to preserve liquidity and maintain or improve their margins. On the positive side, the drop in commodity prices has resulted in a reduction in operational costs, as the costs for fuel supplies and construction materials have decreased.

INTRODUCTION In 1979 the Committee on Radiological Protection and Public Health of the Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD) defined a programme of work needed to improve radon dosimetry and monitoring. A Group of Experts in this field was established by the NEA and at the first meeting of the Group the authors were designated an initial task with the following terms of reference:- To review dosimetry of radon, thoron and their daughters, and in particular:- - to examine analytical models for the assessment of dose to individuals who are exposed to aerosol mixtures of these nuclides; - to examine the state of knowledge of the characteristics of aerosol mixtures of these nuclides and other factors that influence the dose to the lung, and identify those parameters which should be measured for dosimetric purposes in radiological surveillance programmes; - to identify areas where further study or research are needed. In this presentation we attempt to examine, with these objectives, the relationship between exposure to radon and thoron daughter aerosols expressed in terms of the working level month l (WLM), or its SI equivalent, and dose accumulated by sensitive tissues of the lower respiratory tract. Over the past two decades many attempts have been made to calculate the lung dose equivalent to l WLM exposure in mine atmospheres, usually in terms of the maximum dose to basal cells in a small part of the bronchial tree. The calculations have employed variously detailed models of airway anatomy, aerosol deposition, ciliary clearance and dosimetry of tissue at the bronchial surface, and are well reviewed elsewhere (Walsh, 1970; UNSCEAR, 1977; Jacobi, 1977; Fry, 1977). They agree in the conclusion that basal cells in segmental bronchi (between about the third and fifth bronchial generations) receive the highest dose, although estimates of this dose differ by more than an order of magnitude, ranging from about 0.2 to 12 rads per WLM (2 mGy to 120 mGy). The most critical parameters of these models are the assumed depths of basal cells below the bronchial surface and the fraction of the WL carried by free ions. When more realistic values of these parameters are substituted (Jacobi, 1977), the dispersion in calculated maximum doses to basal cells is reduced to give a much smaller range from about 0.3 to 1 rad/WLM (3 to 10 mGy/WLM). The parameters and methods employed in these various models, however, remain too diverse to infer the sensitivity of the dose conversion to practical variations in aerosol characteristics and the additional factors determining lung deposition and clearance. We have therefore taken the approach of developing newer models (Jacobi and Eisfeld, 1980; James et al, 1980) that can encompass the range of available experimental data on the physical and biological behaviour of radon and thoron daughters and also accommodate the different interpretations that can be put upon them. To accommodate the new Pier A expansion at BWI airport, a 1.8 m (6.0 ft)diameter stormwater pipe was constructed below active Runway 15R-33L. The jacked tunnel alignment runs east/west below the runway, and the depth the crown was 6.1 m(20 ft). Soil conditions consisted of very loose to medium sand and gravel, with some medium stiff clay and silt. Super Jet Grouting was selected as the ground treatment system, creating large diameter columns. All work was performed from the surface of the runway between the hours of 12 am and 6 am. Monitoring points along the tunnel in the grout zone indicated zero settlement during tunneling. Tunneling operations in front of and beyond the treatment zone experienced significant settlement. Super Jet Grouting in the treatment zone provided a low permeability continuous stable soilcrete that was readily mined while the runway remained in service.

This paper describes the geology and geotechnics associated with construction of the Thames Tunnel, part of the UK’s Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL). The 2.5km long twin tunnels run beneath the river Thames at depths of up to 40m and are currently under construction. They pass through varying geology comprising alluvium, terrace gravels and chalk with flints and are currently being bored using Herrenknecht mixshield slurry tunnel boring machines (TBM’s). This paper outlines the lithology and engineering properties of each geological formation and describes the geotechnical processes, potential hazards and difficulties experienced in the works. A summary is given into the extent of the investigative work in terms of route selection, tunnel design, TBM optimisation and further details are provided on the geotechnical aspects associated with the construction of the tunnel approach structures and the tunnels.

A number of important studies, ongoing environment monitoring efforts and mining and road construction projects in the lignite based electrical power production area of Amyntaio ? Ptolemais in North West Greece require an accurate and up to date model of the topography. In recognition of the importance of such a model, a project was initiated by the Laboratory of Mining Information Technology and GIS Applications in the Department of Geotechnology and Environmental Engineering of the Technological Educational Institute of Western Macedonia. A massive surface triangulation model was generated from vector data using an optimized Delaunay based method. Combined with aerial and satellite imagery, the triangulation model provides a complete 3D terrain model of the area characterized by high levels of accuracy, detail and realism. The generated model is easy to modify with new data in order to improve its detail and keep it up to date with ongoing earth moving and development operations in the area.

Traditionally, water removal has taken a backseat to many other coal mining functions. However, it is a vital part of the total mine support system. In many US coal mines, more tons of water are removed each year than tons of coal. An excellent discussion of general drainage characteristics can be found in Chapter 8 of Elements of Practical Coal Mining, published by SME-AIME. This chapter is organized into three major sections. These are: designing effective drainage systems; constructing the main mine pumping station (static system); and constructing a portable pumping station (dynamic system). Each topic presents a separate discussion of the elements a construction foreman or engineer should consider for effective installation and operation of the mine drainage system. In addition, a list of pumping equipment manufacturers is available to interested persons and follows these sections.

5.1 INTRODUCTION Heap leach cyanidation techniques possess considerable potential for exploitation of low-grade ores, small ore bodies, mine strip waste and tailing materials where fine grinding is not necessary for good extraction. For heap leaching to be successfu1, ore must exhibit certain characteristics, as previously discussed in Chapter 1. Primary among the necessary ore characteristics is that the ore must have good permeability after being crushed or treated and stacked into heaps if uniform distribution of the cyanide leach solution is to be achieved. Gold and silver ores containing excessive amounts of clays or fines generated by crushing are some of the most difficult to treat successfully by heap leaching. The presence of excessive amounts of slimes (generally classified as minus 50-micron or 270 Tyler mesh sieve size particles) in the heap leach feed will slow the percolation flow of the leach solution, cause channeling, or produce dormant or unleached areas within the heap. This may result in unreasonably long leaching periods and poor extractions. In extreme cases, the clays or slimes can completely seal the ore heap, causing the leach solution to run off the sides of the heap rather than to penetrate the ore heap. The problem of heap leaching ores containing fines can be aggravated during stacking and preparation of the ore heaps, because natural sorting of coarse and fine material occurs during these steps (Johanson, 1978). This phenomenon results in a concentration of ore fines at the center of individual ore piles and a concomitant concentration of larger rock fragments on the lower slopes and base of the piles. When the individual piles within the heap are leveled off prior to installation of the sprinkling system which delivers the leach solution, additional segregation occurs as the fines sift through the coarser ore particles. The segregation results in localized areas or zones with marked differences in permeability. As a consequence, the leach solutions follow the path of least resistance, percolating downward through the coarse ore regions and bypassing or barely wetting areas that contain large amounts of fines or slimes. Effective utilization of marginal gold and silver resources through heap leach processing requires the development of new methods in order to achieve more uniform size distribution during ore heap preparation and better slime control during leaching.

INTRODUCTION The continuous mining machines which were introduced in the 1950's now account for more than half the production of coal from underground mines. Unfortunately, these continuous miners which were designed for increased productivity have also increased the concentration of respirable dust in mines. Inhalation of this respirable dust by miners causes the Coal Worker's Pneumoconiosis (CWP). Concern for CWP increased in the United States following a 1963-65 survey that showed definite x-ray evidence of CWP in 9.8 percent of working miners and in 18.2 percent of nonworking miners in the Appalachian bituminous coal region (Breslin and Niewiadomski, 1982). One of the major objectives of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 was the prevention of CUP. This law initially limited the daily average exposure of coal miners to 3 mg/m3 of respirable dust. However, following the results of a probabilistic model developed by Jacobsen, et. al. in 1971, the limit was reduced to a mass concentration of 2 mg/m3 unless quartz content exceeds 5 percent, a rare occurrence in mines. Based on x-ray categorization prior to death it is believed that the mass concentration in the respirable fraction is a parameter of primary interest for hygenic evaluation of dust exposure. Elorgan, Burgess and Jacobson (1973) suggested that the quantity of inhaled dust, although influential is not the only aspect of exposure which is significant in producing CWP. Miners working in higher rank coal (anthracite) mines are more susceptible to CWP (Morgan, Burgess and Jacobson, 1973). This also confirms the findings of the British (Bennett, Dick and Kaplan, 1979 and Hurley, et. al., 1979) and Germany (Reisner and Rubock, 1977). Based on the cy to toxicological evidence Reisner and Rubock (1979) suggested that when coal properties are similar, increasing quartz and mineral content increases toxicity. David, Ottery and Le ?oux (1975) examined that as the severity of the CWP increased the retention of the coal dust content in the pulmonary region remained the same, while that of quartz content increased significantly . Leiteritz, Baur and Bruckman (1971) studied the various components of coal dust and showed that coal particles comprised a smaller fraction of the mass of fine dust than did particles , of quartz and minerals. It is ironic that quartz and mineral matter both comprise smaller fractions of the higher rank coal dust (Dodgson, et. al., 1971 and Dwiggins, 1981). The potential for recovery of enriched uranium from spent nuclear fuel which has been consolidated into a nuclear waste form was explored in the studies reported here. The waste form of interest is iron-enriched basalt (IEB)--a silicate-based, fused-cast ceramic. IEB samples were prepared containing fuel assembly materials that simulate the core debris of Three Mile Island Unit II;1,2 the nominal composition of the consolidated waste form is given in Table 1. Ore Types The IEB samples, or man-made uranium ores (MMUO), are in two different mineralogical forms. Each MU0 was made by melting the constituent materials and holding at about 1500°C for 1 h. The MMUOs were then heat treated to control crystallization and crystal growth and then cooled to room temperature.

Slickensides cause potentially hazardous ground conditions in underground coal mines. Investigations by MSHA’s Roof Control Division indicate that many slickensides represent bedding plane faults and drag folds that formed during coal bed decollement, a style of faulting that occurs in shale units above coal seams. These slickensides formed in response to regional tectonic compressional stresses, rather than by differential compaction, and are parallel to folds and thrust faults. This paper relates slickensides in the Appalachian, Illinois, and Black Warrior basins to the structural grain of the Appalachian Mountains, provides descriptions of slickensides, and advocates geologic mapping as a predictive method for identifying areas with adverse ground conditions.

"Tailings dam is a subsidiary facility of mining production. In order to decrease tailings dam accidents caused by the failure of flood drainage system, this paper proposed a framework of potential failure detection system of tailings dam flood drainage facility based on three dimensional panorama technology. A collection device of three dimensional panorama is designed to capture the onsite images of flood drainage system of tailings dam. The spatial information of flood drainage facility of tailings dam is recovered through projecting the image information to spherical surface by using three dimensional panorama technology. Two dimensional images are transformed into three dimensional images in three stages of panorama images process, which are pretreatment, registration and splicing. Combined with the framework of HTML5, panorama images are embedded into webpage. These web pages have the functions of user interface that the images could be displayed, moved and zoomed. With the function of interaction with panoramic display, 3D panorama scenes can be changed and scaled. Browsing the webpage is helpful to find potential risks such as possible holes, fractures and leakages of flood drainage system of tailings dam. The realization of this system can detect the potential safety risks of flood drainage system of tailings dam. The application of this system would improve the safety and provide the ability of accident pre-warning. It is useful to maintain the healthy and sustainable operation of tailings dam.Introduction It is reported by Xie et al (2009) that tailings dam are necessary facilities for mine production and places which constructed by damming troughs or encirclement used to store tailings that eliminated after ore selection in Metal and non-metallic mines. It is reported by Mei (2012) that tailings dam is a dangerous source of high-energy man-made debris flow, the collapse of the tailings dam takes devastating damage, which seriously threatens the safety of life and property of the enterprises and the downstream residents. It is reported by Dong (2011) that the collapse of the tailings dam causes secondary disasters such as environmental pollution at the same time. It’s a serious impact on regional economic development and social stability. The phenomenon of collapse of destruction is general excessively of tailings dams in China. It is reported by Zhang et al (2011) that most of these phenomena are caused by flood over the top of dams. The main reason is the lack of capacity or the failure of the drainage system. There are also accidents caused by the failure of drainage system in foreign countries in recent years. For example, November 5th 2015, the tailing dams collapsed because of the insufficient drainage capacity of the Germano mining area in Germano Mariana area in central Minas Gerais state in Brazil. After a small post-earthquake, the liquefied tailings fill sand submerge downstream cities and towns. It finally destroyed 158 houses, killed at least 17 people, polluted 663km river and destroyed 15 square kilometres of land along the river. It is reported by Rico et al (2008) that it’s necessary to continuous monitor and control the tailings drainage system in order to reduce the occurrence of tailings accidents and guarantee the sustainable production of the mine. The traditional artificial detection methods of flood drainage system of tailings dam exist many problems such as heavy workload, low efficiency, and susceptible to meteorological conditions. And it is reported by Luo (2013) that the tailings dam wastewater is corrosive which result a certain disease in flood discharge facilities such as tailings drainage culvert, etc. In order to realize the effective monitoring, management and maintenance of flood drainage system of tailings dam, advanced technologies need to be used to acquire the information of collection and management of flood drainage facilities of tailings dam."

High-calcium limestone has been intermittently produced from the Monarch quarry since the late 1800s. Initial production was used in sugar processing and for a smelter located near Salida, Colorado. During the 1920s, Colorado Fuel and Iron Company (CF&I) began to exploit the deposit as a source of flux stone for its blast furnace steel operations at Pueblo. The deposit was operated for many years as a captive quarry by CF&I. In 1984, CF&I closed the quarrying operations at Monarch; flux stone was no longer required since the blast furnaces were taken off line in 198 1. In 1994, Colorado Lime Company, a subsidiary of United States Lime and Minerals, Inc. acquired the property. Limestone was mined from the Castle Butte Member of the Leadville Limestone (Lower Missippian). Some high- magnesium dolomite was also mined during WWII from the Redcliff Dolomite Member which directly underlies the Castle Butte. Past production was from both an upper and lower quarry at elevations ranging from 10,000 to 11,000 feet (3,048 m-3,353 m) mean sea level (m.s.1.). The reserves at Monarch quarry are in a dip slope deposit, occupying the northwest slope of Monarch Hill. The structural geology of the deposit is complex on both a region- al and mine scale. The reserves are located on the eastern limb of the Syncline Hill syncline. The beds on this limb of the structure strike to the northeast and dip to the northwest from 30 to 45 degrees. A major reverse fault separates the reserves into an upper and lower deposit. Numerous smaller normal and reverse faults cut the deposit, requiring a flexible mine plan. At the Monarch quarry, the Castle Butte Member con- sists of two stratigraphic units. The Upper unit (Mlu) is a thick-bedded, fine-grained crystalline dolomitic limestone from 0 to 300 feet (0-90 m) thick. The unit generally has an Si02 content of less than 4 percent. A bedded chert horizon and a karst horizon at the base of the unit locally raise the Si02 content as high as 20 percent. The underlying Quarry Stone unit (Mlq) is a light-gray, massive, bedded, calcilutite/micrite limestone from 90 to 130 feet (27-40 m) thick. The Quarry Stone unit is remarkably uniform chemically throughout it's entire thickness. Average analysis is CaC03 - 95 percent, MgC03 - 3.5 percent, and Si02 - 0.5 percent. The Footwall dolomite unit (Mld) of the Redcliff Member of the Leadville Limestone is a dark gray to black, blocky, medium-to-thick-bedded, calcilutite/micrite dolomite from 150 to 180 feet thick (46-55 m). The upper 100 feet (30 m) of the unit is a low-silica facies with an average Si02 content of less than 0.5 percent. MgC03 content is con- sistent at 39.8 percent throughout the upper 50 feet (15 m) of the unit but varies from 15 percent to 39.8 percent in the lower portion (50 to 100 feet [15-30 m]) of the low-silica facies. The lowest portion of the unit, 100 feet (30 m) to base of unit is high in silica and is not considered chemical grade. Current in-place, surface-minable reserves at the quarry are estimated to be 14 million short tons (st) (13 million metric tons [mt]) of limestone and 50 million st (45 million mt) of dolomite. A 1.4 million st (1.3 million mt) stockpile of finely crushed limestone is also present on the property. Colorado Lime is presently processing approximately 2,000 st (1,800 mt) per month from the crushed limestone stockpile. This material is pulverized and sold to underground coal mines for use as rock dust, some of this product is also used for environmental purposes. Limestone mining is scheduled to resume in spring of 2000.

In 1900, placer gold was discovered on the beach of Nome, AK on the southern coastline of Alaska's Seward Peninsula (Garnett, 1991). The site is about 800 km (500 miles) from Anchorage. Nome is connected to Anchorage only by air (daily) and by sea (summer). Total onshore placer gold production from Nome's immediate vicinity was more than 155.5 t (5 million oz). Alaska Gold Co, has continued to produce gold onshore with, until recently, two bucketladder dredges, each of 255-L (9-cu ft) bucket capacity. Small-scale marine dredging for gold has been at- tempted several times this century (Garnett, 1991). Western Gold Exploration and Mining Co. Ltd. Partnership (WestGold) is the only company to have been successful in achieving a significant offshore production. The Nome bucketladder-dredging operation from 1986 to 1990 constituted a unique marine-mining experience in the United States. \Inspiration Gold Inc., WestGold's predecessor, acquired six offshore leases in 1985. The total lease area of 87 km2 (21,551 acres) extended from the coastline to the 4.8-km (3-mile) offshore limit (Fig. 1). Those leases al- ready had been partially explored. Drilling was conducted off the shorefast winter sea ice. Therefore, it was rarely more than 1.6 km (1 mile) from the shore or in water deeper than about 9 m (30 ft). In 1985, estimated reserves comprised of a 5-m (17-ft) vertical thickness of sediments below 6.3 m (20 ft) of water. This meant a mean digging depth below the mean sea level (msl) of 11.3 m (37 ft). It was thought that the offshore Nome deposit possessed a feature that is common with many terrestrial gold placers - the secret of profitable exploitation of the marine deposit lay in maximizing the dredge throughput to minimize the unit costs. The inability of the project to withstand the prohibitively high cost of a new dredge was recognized. So Inspiration Gold purchased a used unit. This was the world's largest ocean- going bucketladder dredge (Fig. 2). Binzn was an 850-L (30 cu ft) bucket capacity dredge that was lying idle in Singapore. Originally constructed in the Jurong shipyard of Singapore in 1979, Bima was designed by Mining and Transport Engineering, a subsidiary of IHC Holland. Billiton Marine used the dredge for tin production at Pulau Tujuh in Indonesia (Dieperink, 1978) before it was laid up in mid-1985. Bima underwent a nine-week refit before departing Singapore on June 4,1986, with 800-t (880-st ) of deck cargo. It was dry-towed for 32 days to Alaska. A slower, less expensive, wet-tow at the authorized 5.5 kmthr (3 knots/hour) would have delayed the dredge's arrival in Alaska untl almost the onset of winter. The 13,000-km (8,100-mile) voyage was made on the deck of Smit Lloyd's "Giant-4" submersible barge towed by its 7.8- MW (10,500-hp) tugboat. The first season's dredging revealed several major shortcomings in Bima. Further repairs and modifications were undertaken at Tacoma, WA. The dredge returned to Nome for the June start of the 1987 summer dredging season. The refitted Bima worked offshore at Nome from 1987 to 1990. It produced 3.67 t (118,078 oz) of gold at an average recovered grade of 824 mg/m3 (0.0204 oz/cu yd). In 1991, the dredge was dismantled and sold.

Gold Fields Mining Corporation started processing ore from it's Chimney Creek operation in northern Nevada in November, 1987. Since that time production has averaged about 200,000 ounces per year from the milling and dump leaching circuits combined. The events that led up to commissioning of the plant started in January of 1985 when the Gold Fields exploration team drilled their first hole in an area now known as Discovery Hill. The major orebody was located later in the year in what is currently the major focus of activity, the North Pit. Subsequent drilling since plant startup has found another 14 million tons of ore two miles south of the original orebody. This South Pit orebody is currently being stripped and metallurgical testing is underway. Engineering Engineering on the Chimney Creek plant started in earnest in May, 1986. Davy McKee Corporation from San Ramon, California, did both the engineering and the construction management. Before engineering began the entire senior staff of the Plant Department was hired and assigned to the project. Senior staff included the Plant Superintendent, Plant General Foreman, Maintenance General Foreman and Chief Metallurgist. Gold Fields does not employ an internal central engineering staff to design their plants. We feel that the people who design the plant should be the ones who will be required to run it once it has been commissioned. This philosophy affords a continuous accountability from start of design through commissioning and operations. All four of the senior staff spent the most critical phase of the engineering stage at Davy McKee, so the plant is truly a reflection of all four disciplines. In bringing on the Maintenance General Foreman from the start, there was a focus placed on ease of maintaining the plant. Another philosophy that was adopted from the start was that the plant be easy to work in and maintain for both operators and maintenance personnel. Numerous design criteria were given to Davy McKee to ensure this. For example, we required that every piece of equipment could be reached easily with a crane or fork lift. All conveyors were required to have walkways on both sides for ease of maintenance and a minimum of 30 inches of clearance under them for ease of cleanup. Visibility for operators was considered very important and the control rooms and general plant layout were designed with this in mind. A list of about 100 general rules were given to Davy McKee during the early layout meetings and these were held as the general design criteria throughout engineering and construction. While engineering was progressing in San Ramon, California, dump leach test work was being done at the site. Three 6 foot diameter fiberglass columns were constructed and filled to a 20 foot height with low grade ore. Leaching characteristics were determined and the dump leach design was based on information collected from these columns. Construction The major contractors on the project were The Industrial Company for the bulk of the piping and structural, EMKO on the electrical/ instrumentation and Hunewill for most of the earth work and leach pad construction. All plant operating and maintenance personnel were employed eight weeks before startup for intensive training. Instructors were Gold Fields personnel, including foremen, and Davy McKee engineers. On occasion, selected suppliers representatives were brought in to discuss major pieces of equipment. Project completion was targeted for January, 1988 at a projected cost of 78.9 million dollars. Actual startup was about 1 1/2 months ahead of schedule and slightly under budget. Full design capacity was achieved the first full month of operation. Crushing Run of mine ore is delivered to the crusher and dumped into a 90 ton hopper which is topped with a 30" X 30" opening stationary grizzly. Asamera Minerals Cannan Mine has been producing a 170 g gold/tonne (5 oz gold/ton) siliciaus flotation concentrate since July 1985. Flotation concentrate is shipped to a smelter for gold recovery. Numerous processes have been investigated to economically produce bullion on site. This paper describes the laboratory and pilot plant test results of a bacterial assisted oxidation of the refractory minerals. Economic comparisons with autoclaving and roasting processes are included.

Introduction Coal extraction by continuous miners (CM) is currently the most common underground method in the US industry and accounts for slightly more than two-thirds of the nation's deep mining production (National Coal Association, 1987). Even if longwall mining should become more commonplace, it can proceed only after ventilation and access entries have been driven by CMs. Since an area of concern continues to be the effects of the dust generated on the health of mineworkers, this paper discusses the relationship between the elemental compositon of mining-generated airborne dust sampled from the immediate ventilation return of a CM and laboratory-generated dust derived from channel samples taken from the mines. There are several potential contributions of this type of study to the coal mining industry. First, after more fundamental knowledge of the causes of Coal Worker's Pneumoconiosis (CWP) is learned, the laboratory-generated respirable dust could be used to identify a potentially hazardous coal seam. Also, this study could possibly aid in understanding the fundamental causes of CWP by producing mining-simulated samples of coal dust that could be used in epidemiological studies. Further, assuming that there is no difference in the elemental composition of a drill-core sample and a channel sample from the same location, a mining company could predict a new mine's respirable dust elemental composition in the immediate ventilation return by using exploratory drill core samples of the roof, coal, and floor rock to prepare the laboratory dust. Ventilation engineers could then use engineering design and control measures during premine planning to reduce the incidence and severity of CWP by better ventilating the potentially hazardous coal seam. If this proper planning prevented any future changes to the ventilation equipment and mine design, much time and money could be saved. Scope of work To investigate the variability of the chemical characteris tics of respirable dust, airborne dust samples from eight underground coal mines located in the eastern and midwestern United States were collected with eight-stage Sierra Model 298 Marple cascade impactors, as well as 25 channel samples of mined material. Each channel sample was removed from the middle of the coal face before mining occurred. Sampling of the mining-generated dust was conducted by Lee (1986) by sampling the entire working sections, primarily for characterization purposes, to obtain information on the locational variability of dust characteristics. Research performed for this study used the elemental analyses of the mining-generated dusts he sampled in the immediate ventilation returns of CMs. The procedure that was used to produce the laboratory-generated respirable dust was based on the Hardgrove grindability test since it reflects the pulverizing characteristics of coal. This test was chosen for several additional reasons. First, it is repeatable and reproducible. A consistent amount of input energy is used as well as a specified size range of feed material to be crushed (the channel samples). Second, it is thought to generate secondary dust in a way similar to that of the crushing and grinding of the coal and rock as they pass through the arc-shaped cutting path of the CM's cutter head. The potential effect on dust generation by this secondary grinding mechanism may be at least as much as that produced by primary fragmentation, which is dust produced by the cutting action of the bit against the coal or rock (Roepke, 1984). Finally, the Hardgrove grindability test is well known and is used in the coal industry to guide mineral processing engineers in estimating the capacity of mills used to grind coal. One hypothesis of dust researchers in the Generic Technology Center for Respirable Dust is that the elemental as well as the physical characteristics of coal mine dust will make a difference in the incidence and severity of CWP. Coal mine dust is generated not only from coal, but also from any rock partings contained within the seam or any roof or floor material mined with the coal. Thus, coal mine dust may not have the same elemental characteristics as the coal being mined. Given that hypothesis, mixtures proportional to each thickness mined of roof, coal, and floor rock derived from the channel samples of the face areas from which the respirable dusts were generated by the CMs were used to produce the feed material that was pulverized in the Hardgrove machine.

Subsidence profiles above two adjacent panels in Illinois are compared with pro- files predicting subsidence behavior obtained using the (i) National Coal Board (NCB, 1975) method, (ii) the profile function method and (iii) the influence function method. The NCB method predicts the maximum subsidence values at the center of the troughs accurately, but, the overall shapes of these predicted profiles do not match the profiles from the measured data well. Consistent values for the angles of draw were measured but these angles were different in the transverse (average value 43 degrees) and in the longitudinal (average value 17.5 degrees) directions. Time dependent subsidence effects are shown to be small but measurable. These displacements continue at a linear rate for at least a 12 month period. A comparison of measured horizontal distances, interpreted as horizontal strain, and the NCB predictions for strain shows that the peak measured strains are greater by a factor f about four than the predicted strains. The relationship between surface curvature and strain is investigated. Problems associated with calculation of surface curvatures from vertical displacement data are highlighted and a recommendation is made for future studies to consider direct measurement of this parameter. Surface curvatures above a moving face are found to be about three times less than the curvatures at the stationary end of the panel. On the other hand, a hyperbolic tangent profile function is shown to serve as an accurate predictive tool for subsidence behavior in two adjacent longwall panels at Old Ben Number 24 mine in Illinois. This function predicts not only the vertical displacements but also the surface curvatures above both panels. Influence functions are shown to be more problematic, although potentially more flexible, in their application than the profile functions.

Sao Bento Mlnerai;;ao Mine (SBM), located 100 kms northwest of Belo Horlzante, Brazil, was commissioned In 1987t1l to produce 185 kg per month of gold from 240 tpd of refractory sulphide flotation concentrate. The concentrate Is processed by a Sherrill Gordon design pressure oxidation circuit followed by conventional CIL gold recovery process (Flgur .. J). The original plant design foresaw expansion to 480 tpd, and In this regard the acidic effluent neutralisation, CIL and carbon circuits were designed for future expansion to treat the higher tonnage. The pressure oxidation section was sized for 240 tpd with the Intention to double the Installed plant equipment to provide 480 tpd capacity when required. This decision was based In part on the novelty of pressure oxidation to treat refractory sulphide concentrates in 1984 when the process design was finalised. General Mining, Metals & Minerals (Pty) Ltd (GENMIN), has been actively Involved for the past 30 years in the development of bacterial process for the oxidation of refractory gold concentrates; the results of this development program have provided the registered process BIOx®. The successful Implementation of BIOx® technology for treatment of refractory gold concentrates at GENMIN's Fairview Mine In October 1986t2l, as well as the substantial experience accumulated in laboratory and pilot testing of some 40 other sulphide concentrates, Justified reconsideration of the oxidation process best suited to provide the Incremental sulphide oxidation capacity planned for SBM.

Determining whether a railroad locomotive will skid under varying conditions is a fairly routine, pervasive problem. However, some of the equations provided are wrong, others are at best murky. All require correction or clarification. Skidding during heavy braking is a crucial safety problem, possibly resulting in loss of control and collision. It can also be an economic detriment, ruining wheels and tracks and, by inhibiting acceleration, causing reduced full-speed times. While skidding is less likely for rubber-tired equipment, a comparable problem exists for tractor-trailers operating on poor surfaces. The primary reference is to the SME Mining Engineering Handbook (pp. 14-11, Eqs. 7 and 8), which is taken as authoritative and normative (Brantner, 1973). Fundamentally, the physical weight of the locomotive can never be negative (-). However, based on this reference it can be negative on adverse grades, during braking (Eq. 7), and on favorable grades, whether accelerating or braking (Eq. 8). Additionally, it should be noted that the term rW should be Rw. To avoid having the locomotive weight turn out negative, "absolute value" brackets must enclose the right-hand expression of both equations. Also, the weight of locomotive can be greater than the right-hand side value introducing the common "greater than or equal to" symbol (>_). For our company, S&B Industrial Minerals S.A., restoration of areas which were mined and the effort for bringing up again a balance of nature is an important priority over the last 3 decades. The successful qualitative results of restoration works have delivered to nature over 1.700.000 m2 of surface after mining activity. Our fundamental method in order to achieve the best results for restoration of mined areas is the use of local plants (bush or tree type). Grass and herbs are installed by using the method of hydroseeding. Small trees and bushes are produced and they grow up at our fully owned Milos nursery and they are installed during winter when weather conditions are suitable. During the initial stages of restoration activities a great amount of surfaces, adequately shaped, are delivered by the mining department covered with top soil. These surfaces are suitable not only for the local nature community but also for a combination between natural and agricultural environment. The above fact was a great chance to create small horizontal agricultural cultivations as pilots inside the restored areas. At the beginning the agricultural items that could potentially be installed in these pilot areas were studied and examined analytically. The following agricultural items were finally qualified to be furthermore researched: 1) Vineyard (Vitis vinifera ) 2) Prickly pear (Opuntia ficus indica) 3) Jojoba (Simmonsia chinensis) 4) Olive tree (Olea europea)
