"There is uncertainty in ultimate pit limits due to geologic variation and unpredictable economic landscapes. In this work we show how this uncertainty affects the ultimate pit and how it can be analyzed to improve the mine planning process. A stochastic framework using geostatistical simulation and parametric analysis is used to model the effects of geologic and economic variation on ultimate pit limits and overall project economics. This analysis is made possible by a new, highly efficient pit optimization implementation which can be automated and set up to calculate ultimate pits for hundreds of different scenarios in a matter of hours. Quantifying ultimate pit uncertainty early in the mine planning process allows mining engineers to make informed decisions regarding infrastructure placement, and to mitigate the possibility of incurring substantial costs relocating critical mine facilities. INTRODUCTION The mining industry is increasingly concerned with the effects of risk and uncertainty. Uncertain prices, unpredictable global markets, and unknown foreign exchange rates can alter the economic viability of a mining project in substantial ways. This economic uncertainty is compounded by geologic uncertainty. The extent and quality of any given deposit cannot be fully measured and is not known before consequential decisions must be made. These two sources of uncertainty are responsible for the majority of deviation between what happens during operation and what was initially planned. Understanding and explicitly quantifying this uncertainty will lead to better decision making and allow mining engineers and investors to be aware of what may occur. It is unrealistic to believe that one model, estimated from sparse measurements, is enough to capture both geologic and economic uncertainty and allow for optimal decisions. The entire breadth of uncertainty should be considered, as both upside and downside risks have large impacts on the investment potential and operational efficiency of mining projects. The workflow presented here uses Monte Carlo simulation and parametric analysis together to explicitly analyze the breadth of geologic and economic uncertainty as it applies to ultimate pit calculation and long range mine planning."

Flotation, water-washing cyclones (hydrocyclones) and spiral concentrators are the three process units most commonly utilised in fine coal preparation. The results of testwork conducted on these three units will be presented and their performance and separation characteristics examined in detail. In particular, the dependence of the separation characteristics of each unit on particle size and the constraint this places on product quality (ash and sulphur levels) will be discussed. This dependence will be shown to be a critical criterion in the selection of fine coal circuits.

The addition of new data and corrections can be made under the control of a simple editing session. All programs for this system are written in FORTRAN and executabe "MACROS".. After the addition of new data, the whole file Is reinitialized to update the binary file and cross-reference tables. Updating the binary file involves rerunning the initializing program. The creation of graphic plots like cross sections and plan views is menu-driven from a terminal and very user-friendly. Small files containing not more than 10,000 entries (survey and assay points) are suitable for this setup, particularly for computers with less than 2 Megabytes of real and virtual memory. The largest file processed contained 35,000 lines of survey and assay information and required 4 megabytes of virtual memory. Working with this size file slows down the time for the creation of plots and cross sections. Another independent system is more akin to a financial type of data base. It was installed in one Anaconda mine as part of the operation's inventory, warehouse, day-pay payroll, and purchasing data bases. It is a highly hardware-dependent system, in particular, IBM's CICS/VS (Customer Information Control System/Virtual Storage). This is a true relational data base that optimizes storage requirements, supports online inquiry, update, data entry, and data security. While this system has been tested and proven in accounting applications, it requires programming expertice in PL/I and other CICS utility programs. It is well suited for huge data bases (like the 35,000 lines of data), but cumbersome for small engineering files.

Genstar's underground mine at Texas, MD experienced a failure of the mine roof and subsequent damage to an underground backfill caused by surface floodwaters. A hydraulic backfilling program was developed in house to stabilize temporary repairs to the mine roof, replace 2300 yards of pneumatically stowed backfill, and complete a permanent repair to the mine roof. A flowable backfill material was developed, tested, and later marketed as the result of experience gained during this project. In addition, Genstar personnel developed backfilling techniques to meet the requirements of the repairs and completed work without the additional expense of non company services or contractors.

Among underground coal miners, hearing loss remains one of the most common occupational illnesses. In response, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducts research to reduce the noise emission of underground coal-mining equipment, an example of which is a roof bolting machine. Field studies show that, on average, drilling noise is the loudest noise that a roof bolting machine operator would be exposed to and it contributes significantly to the operators? noise exposure. NIOSH has determined that the drill steel and chuck radiate a significant amount of noise during drilling. NIOSH and the Corry Rubber Corporation have developed a bit isolator that breaks the steel-to-steel link between the drill bit and drill steel and a chuck isolator that breaks the mechanical connection between the drill steel and the chuck. This effectively reduces the noise radiated by the drill steel and chuck and reduces the noise exposure of the roof bolter operator. The paper documents the evolution of the bit isolator and chuck isolator. Laboratory testing confirms that production bit and chuck isolators reduce the A-weighted sound level generated during drilling by 3.7 to 6.6 dB

Liberation of valuable minerals from a gangue matrix during size reduction of multiphase mineral particles is an important objective in mineral separation processes. A methodology for the prediction of volumetric grade distribution from one dimensional, linear intercept image analysis is being developed using a transformation function to describe the relations hi p between the linear and volumetric grade distributions. As part of this research effort it has been found that a transformation function, derived from Monte Carlo simulations of irregularly shaped particles, mainly depends on the volumetric grade and the dispersion density, i.e., the number of nuclei (or grains) per particle. A possible mathematical form for the transformation function is described in detail.

"Intrepid Potash, Inc.’s Carlsbad East facility has refined sylvite and produced muriate of potash (MOP) since 1965. In addition to MOP, Intrepid Potash began recovering the mineral langbeinite from a mixed ore reserve in 2005. In 2011 a new langbeinite recovery process for the coarse (+850 micron) size fraction was constructed to enhance the overall langbeinite recovery. Based on the limited mixed ore reserve and an abundance of langbeinite ore reserves the transition of the East plant to a langbeinite only facility was targeted for 2021. Due to a decreasing grade of the mixed ore reserve, declining sales pricing, and high sylvite operating costs a strategic decision was made to accelerate this transition into 2016. To enable a successful transition, a fines recovery system needed to be developed, constructed and implemented. This paper describes the advancement of langbeinite processing at Intrepid Potash and the planning, development and successful execution of the transition to a langbeinite only operation. BACKGROUND Langbeinite (K2SO4·2MgSO4) is a double salt containing potassium sulfate (K2SO4) and magnesium sulfate (MgSO4). It is used as fertilizer and in the industry is described as Sulfate of Potash Magnesia. It is attractive as a specialty fertilizer and in addition to containing a ready source of a primary nutrient potassium, it also provides two secondary essential nutrients, magnesium and sulfur. It is especially attractive for chloride sensitive crops. Langbeinite has a specific gravity of 2.8, a Mohs hardness of 4.2, and is brittle thus very friable. It is the hardest of the saline minerals, and despite its relative softness on the Mohs scale can be very abrasive in process environments and in field applications, probably due to its conchoidal cleavage. Its solubility at 240 g/l is less than the solubility of sylvite (KCl) or halite (NaCl) and due to even slower relative dissolution kinetics washing with cold water has been a common practice for upgrading langbeinite ores. The solubilization/crystallization relationship for langbeinite is different from the majority of other evaporite minerals in that once langbeinite is solubilized it does not form langbeinite again. Instead it gives up one mole of magnesium sulfate, takes on various waters of hydration and precipitates out as either schoenite (K2SO4·MgSO4·6H2O) or leonite (K2SO4·MgSO4·4H2O) depending on temperature. Due to its partial solubility and phase transitions at its surface when exposed to moisture, there is strong cohesion between wetted particles; the resulting stickiness of the upgraded products can create significant materials handling issues unless processed in slurry form or at relatively low moisture levels. Langbeinite has been produced commercially from two locations, the Kalush and Stebnik regions in the Cartpathian Mountains of former Poland and now the Ukraine and from the Permian Basin in New Mexico (Garrett, 1996; Smith 1949). Current production is from two operators in the U.S., Mosaic and Intrepid Potash."

The productivity of the underground driller has increased 500-600% during the past 20 years. This increase is not due so much to improved percussion drills as it is to improved drill support equipment and modernization of mining methods, Efforts to mechanize drilling in mining operations were made as early as the late 1800's; and, patents on rock drill manipulating machinery date back to 1906. However, the great rush to mechanization began in the 1950's when the development of trackless mining methods gave mining engineers and equipment designers their first opportunity to create improved operating conditions for the equipment and to match the equipment with these conditions. Accordingly, this paper will summarize the developments of the past 20 years and will attempt a forecast of developments that can be expected during the next few years.

The La Perla Mine, owned by Altos Hornos de Mexico, S.A., is located approximately 100 miles east of the City of Chihuahua in the State of Chihuahua, Mexico. The mine began operations in 1958. Existing ore beneficiating facilities, consisting of heavy media and jig plants, upgrade the ore prior to shipment by rail to the Altos Hornos steelmaking complex in Monclova. Sizable reserves of two distinct ore types, which were not amenable to treatment in the existing beneficiating plant, or usable in the blast furnaces, have been mined and stockpiled in order to uncover the treatable ores. One of these ore types has been labeled "Diseminado" ore, and is low grade containing approximately 42% Fe with sulphurs ranging from 1 to 2%. The other ore type has been labeled "Pulverulento" ore, and is high grade containing approximately 65% Fe and 0.1% S, but at 80% minus 325 mesh, is too fine grained for efficient sintering. Late in 1968, Arthur G. McKee & Company became involved with the problem of improving the above ores for their efficient and economical use in Altos Hornos' blast furnaces. Early in 1969 representative samples of Diseminado ore were obtained for laboratory bench-scale testing at the University of Minnesota, Mineral Resources Research Center. Concentration tests incorporating magnetic roasting, wet magnetic separation, high intensity separation, high tension magnetic separation, anionic flotation of apatite, cationic flotation of silica and oleic acid flotation of iron were performed. Laboratory testing was concurrently carried on at La Perla Laboratory, which resulted in plans to construct a 10 TPD pilot plant. The pilot plant was operational in September, 1969. Analyzing laboratory results as well as pilot plant results, Altos Hornos and Arthur G. McKee & Company metallurgists agreed that the most promising flowsheet for the low grade Diseminado ores entailed wet magnetic cobbing, desliming, and oleic acid flotation of the non-magnetic fraction. Technology and economies of scale have, in the past decade, brought about the emergence of giant vessels. Meanwhile, to answer the need for rapid dispatch, as a means of combating the proportionately far greater demurrage charges, shiploading and unloading speeds have soared (Ref. 1, 2, 3). As the loading and unloading rates have dramatically increased, so has the cloud of dust grown in unbearable proportions. It not only has threatened to be a real menace to machinery and men, but in certain instances has also seriously jeopardized fish and marine life (Ref. 4). In an era when ecology is king, dust in shiploading and unloading can no longer be shrugged off as a mere public nuisance, and its control is now duly recognized as of grave concern to all. Even if public outcry were not a problem, from the operator's own parochial point of view, dust can adversely affect productivity and the well-being of the operating personnel. Without adequate control, it can also result in costly equipment maintenance, particularly when the dust is micronic in size, and abrasive. The Hierarchy of Control Techniques Given the great fortune of not yet having to deal with gas and odors, in the jargon of pollution control, our problem is confined to having to control "particulates" only. To deal with "particulates", the myriad of dust control techniques can be utterly confusing to those who are not entirely well versed in the methodology. Eldorado Gold Corporation of Vancouver, B.C. owns and operates three gold mines. The Sao Bento underground gold mine in Minas Gerais State, Brazil produced 105,907 ounces in 1997. The La Colorada and La Trinidad open pit, heap leach mines in Mexico produced over 83,000 ounces in 1997. With a deteriorating gold market plaguing the industry throughout 1997 Eldorado had to take critical measures at each mine to enhance gold production while lowering cash operating costs. Each mine had its own unique problems to confront. This case study will discuss three distinct courses of action taken at the three mine sites.

The North Temple Tunnel pedestrian underpass in Salt Lake City, UT was built using a pipe canopy method that met significant challenges in potentially running ground conditions. Kilduff Underground Engineering (KUE) was the designer for the 20-foot-diameter SEM tunnel, Design-Build contract. Geotechnical data indicated ground conditions consisted of loose silty gravel for the majority of the face overlying soft to medium stiff clays in the tunnel invert. KUE designed a pipe canopy as pre-support to stabilize cohesionless gravels in the crown, a shotcrete initial liner with lattice girders to minimize disturbance of the finer-grained materials in the invert and a final liner with waterproofing system. All mineral beneficiation processes require water for its execution. Therefore, the availability and adequate management of water are key to the existence of any mine operation. However, many mines’ operations are affected by water scarcity and risk an increase of operational costs or even production in some cases. This paper proposes a model to minimize the losses of water due to evaporation and re-absorption by adjusting the active and inactive periods of the discharge in different points of the tailing. When applied, the model determines optimal or nearly optimal discharge operation in all the scenarios that were evaluated.

Mineable material is defined using cut-off grade either as geological or economic cut-off grade. Both geological and economic cut-off grade affects the output generated in an open-pit mining operation. It distinguishes the amount of ore sent to the mill for processing and waste to the dump. This consequently affects the overall profits generated from the operation hence the need for cut-off grade optimization. There are several mining parameters that are considered in a typical cut-off grade model. They include economic, geological, and operational parameters. They have a significant effect to influence the cut-off grade selected in mining operations at any given period. Some of the parameters are stochastic in nature by having a random probability distribution that may not be predicted precisely. When selecting cut-off grades in a mine operation, the mining engineers must consider the dynamic nature of the operational parameters in order to maximize the net present value of the project. Modifying Lane’s cut-off grade model which was developed in 1964 to incorporate the stochastic parameters in the approach helps improve the net present value as shown in the paper. The modified Lane’s approach is developed into a stochastic computer-aided application code-named NPVMining. Using NPVMining, selected stochastic parameters are considered in this exercise to show the effect on the output (net present value). The selected parameters (price and grade-tonnage) are varied by ± 10%. NPVMining has a graphical user interface that makes it easy to use and displays results in a user-friendly way. It gives the user the choice to manipulate the data depending on the study being undertaken or any other factor affecting the specific mine. This paper analyses the effect of each of the selected mining parameters on cut-off grade using NPVMining to show the significance of monitoring their variance.

The long-term mine scheduling is the optimal decision on how to extract and process the mining reserves. The resulting plan is mainly driven by economic, metallurgical, and geological factors. Accounting for their uncertainties leads to a robust solution and the feasibility for economic-risk quantification. In this work, we model the spatial uncertainty of grade distributions of multiple correlated elements, by using a multivariate morphing transformation. The result is a set of multivariate geostatistical realizations of the grades, which honor the conditioning data, the direct and cross variograms, and the multivariate statistical distribution, inferred from a set of samples. These models are the input in a reinforcement learning framework, adopted to train a deep neural network that considers the grade uncertainty and leads to an optimum mine plan after training using deep Q-Learning. Mining and processing capacities, as well as economic parameters and metallurgical constraints, are incorporated as the reinforcement learning environment rules. The method is validated on a real deposit, providing insights for future applications.

Since the early days of risk management, developments in technology and guidelines (ITA, ITIG, OGG, UCA) have advanced risk management and probable cost estimating, which are now widely recognized. WSDOT’s CEVP risk-based cost validation process is now established after 20 years. This paper traces these developments, summarizes advanced techniques, and presents examples of US and international projects with results. A particular case of using advanced risk evaluation to allow enhanced-capability TBMs to be considered in a competitive bid process is presented. Further advances, including the use of digital twin risk-based representation of complex projects, are described.

Volcanic activity occurred during six periods of Arizona's geologic history. Precambrian volcanism occurred in two pulses at 1.8-1.6 billion years (b.y.) ago and at 1.2-1.1 b.y. ago. Volcanism occurred again in mid-Jurassic and Laramide (Late Cretaceousearly Tertiary) time. Volcanic rocks from these times are not used commercially in any significant quantity. Middle and late Cenozoic magmatic activity covered large areas of Arizona with voluminous volcanic rocks. During the mid-Tertiary magmatic pulse, explosive silicic magmatism, with eruption of areally extensive ash-flow tufts, covered large areas in the Basin and Range Province, while the Colorado Plateau remained largely unaffected. Basalt eruption also occurred during and immediately after silicic volcanism, leading to compositionally diverse suites of volcanic rocks. Late Cenozoic volcanism occurred throughout Arizona and was dominated by wide-spread eruption of basalt flows with local cinder-cone clusters and siliceous volcanic deposits. Perlite deposits near Picketpost Mountain in northeastern Pinal County account for the bulk of the industrial uses of mid-Cenozoic volcanic rocks. Other perlites of presumed middle Tertiary age are present in central, southeastern, and western Arizona, but to date remain unexploited. Arizona Fire Agate is a valuable gem material and is associated with volcanic rocks of middle Tertiary age. Basaltic rock of this age also is utilized in the manufacture of rock wool for insulation. Late Cenozoic volcanism produced most of the industrial-quality volcanic rocks. Basalt, cinder cones, and materials of rhyolitic composition are commercially exploited by municipal and Federal agencies and private industry for aggregates, road conditioners and maintenance materials, asphaltic concretes, cinder block construction, pozzolans, and landscaping. These deposits are generally confined to the Flagstaff and Springerville areas. A famous peridot gem locality is associated with late Tertiary basalts at Peridot Mesa on the San Carlos Indian Reservation. Important products derived from altered volcanic materials of late Cenozoic age include clay and zeolite. Arizona's volcanic-rock sequences are still incompletely known, particularly in central and western Arizona. The potential for recognition and exploitation of important new deposits of useful volcanic materials is high.

Rapid growth and acceptance of engineered materials have changed the way we live. We have come to expect improved performance at less cost. At the same time, our awareness of societal and environmental issues created by these materials during and after their lifetime has been heightened. As a result, material lifecycle analysis is receiving considerable attention. Material lifecycle analysis evaluates the cost/effective tradeoffs at each stage of a material's life: feedstock, fabrication, performance, recycle, and disposal. The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigates a material's lifecycle using technical cost models augmented with decision and impact analyses. Results of these studies are useful in gaining a better understanding of current material selections and illustrating the multifaceted issues associated with engineered materials in today's society.

This paper discusses the subject of "Improving Contracting Methods" from the owners point of view, particularly the public. An overview is given of the work of the U.S. National Committee on Tunneling Technology and some apparent results of the implementation of these recommendations or lack thereof. Selected recommendations that are not being implemented are discussed as to the the desirability and the possible impact of their implementation. Impediments to acceptance of the recommendations are identified and solutions proposed. The difference in the flexibility, attitudes and approaches of owners, public, quasi-public and private, toward improving contracting methods are discussed. Particular emphasis is given to the fact that the onus to improve is on the owner because they usually develop the contractual language or at least have the final decision on its content and are or should be an equal party to the contract during its administration.
