Over a period of seven years (1989-1996) the Mineral Industry Research Laboratory (MIRL) University of Alaska Fairbanks, has investigated the effects of temperature, residence time, and particle size on the degree of low-rank coal (LRC) upgrading for a non-evaporative, hydrothermal drying process, also known as hot water drying (HWD). Three Alaskan LRCs were used in this study: Usibelli coal (Seam No. 4) from the Nenana Coal Field, Little Tonzona coal from near McGrath, and Beluga coal from the Beluga-Yentna field on the west side of Cook Inlet. Replicated, factorial tests were conducted. Experimental results indicate that most of the low-rank coal upgrading via HWD occurs rapidly within the first 10-20 minutes of residence time. Thereafter, the upgrading process slows down and over 100 minutes of additional residence time are required to produce similar percentage increases in coal properties to those achieved in the first 10- 20 minutes. The properties of the hot water dried products were very sensitive to process temperature. Calorific value, carbon and oxygen contents, equilibrium moisture levels and Hardgrove gindabilities all appear to change linearly with temperature within the 275°C to 325°C range.

Ferrochromium produced by smelting chromite ores is an important alloying component in the steel industry. Ore, coke and fluxes are mixed and reacted in an arc furnace for a smelting process of ferrochromium. In ad-dition to this process, pre-reduction of chromite ore with carbon is an important industrial process. In all these processes, the mechanism and kinetics of reduction of chromite with carbon play an important role. In this study, the reduction of Turkish chromite ore with carbon was investigated. Chromite and carbon were ground to three different particle size groups. Chromite was mixed with carbon in stoichiometric and excess ratios. The samples were reduced under argon atmosphere at temperatures between 1,200° and 1,350°C. The formed phases and alloy compositions of reduced chromite samples were analyzed by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscope (SEM) with EDAX and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). Experimental results showed that the degree of reduction and the reduction rate increased with increasing temperature and decreasing particle size. The highest degree of reduction, 61.4%, was obtained at 1,350°C. The reduction took place in three stages: Stage 1: transformation of Fe3+ to Fe2+ and formation of metallic nuclei, Stage 2: formation of metallic crust around the particles and Stage 3: growth of the metallic crust and coalescence of the metallic phase.

For many years, Newmont has focused on improving its operations. After the merger between Newmont and Santa Fe Pacific Gold, Newmont created synergies of more than $50 million a year in Nevada. This was done primarily through optimal ore movements and consolidation of various functions. During the current period of low gold and copper prices, Newmont has refocused its efforts on efficient operations worldwide. At its mine facilities in Nevada, Newmont has used a combination of several strategies to decrease the costs of operations and to increase profitability. These include computer technology, optimal use of infrastructures, procurement strategies, functional consolidation, enhanced mine planning and several available metallurgical processing options.

The U.S. coal mining industry consumes a significant amount of energy, primarily diesel fuel and electricity. The continuous global increase in energy demand, high energy prices, and environmental issues related to carbon dioxide emission represent a substantial challenge for the mining industry. This paper presents a result of research work on development of an integrated data environment system for analysis and control of energy consumption in a surface coal mine. A case study on an operating surface coal mine is carried out to demonstrate the practical application of the developed system. The research work presented here may be used by mining professionals to help provide the answers to the crucial questions of when, where, and how much energy is being used. The technology of making and using ?paste? from mine tailings is increasingly well known by the minerals industry. The primary applications are water recovery and ?stacking? of tailings with minimal use of dams and ponds. This paper highlights some applications, other than water recovery and stacking, that have come to the attention of a paste thickener equipment supplier. As generated by thickeners, paste (also called ?thickened tailings?) is a non-settling, relatively high concentration, suspension of solids that can be pumped. Paste deposits with an angle of repose, allowing minimal use of dams. High solids concentration allows more water recovery at the paste thickener than is achieved in conventional and high rate slurry tailings thickeners. This paper is based on paste as produced in a flow sheet that includes a thickener, underflow pumps that are typically centrifugal, transfer pumps that can be centrifugal or positive displacement, and a distribution system at the deposition site. Examples of paste applications other than water recovery or stacking include: ?mine? an existing tailings pond by removing slurry, recovering coal or iron ore values, and return the new tailings to the pond as a paste that does not res-suspend; use paste to seal an existing tailings pond from leaking to groundwater or to an underground mine; extend the life of an existing tailings pond by thickening the tailings to paste; move an existing dry tailings impoundment to a new location by slurrying, pumping, paste thickening, and redeposit; minimize the size of a filter by paste thickening the feed; operate a paste thickener and filter in parallel on a tailings stream with re-mixing to achieve a high solids concentration. The use of paste tailings technology has been expanding over the last 15 years. The applications, both implemented and under consideration, are increasingly diverse and include all minerals tailings. Tailings handling designers should always consider a paste option to the conventional slurry solution.

The Los Angeles Metro Eastside Extension light rail project included a 1.5 mile underground segment, which consisted of twin 18'?10" ID tunnels, bored with two EPB-TBMs. One of the major project challenges after the completion of the bored tunnels was the excavation of six cross passages within alluvial geology below the water table and with low ground cover. Sequential excavation methods were employed and this paper details the design, ground treatment, support measures, and construction methods used to mine these cross passages beneath the congested urban streets of the City of Los Angeles.

The year 2010 will mark the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the research efforts by the U.S. government to improve the health and safety of miners working in the United States. This research began in 1910 with the establishment of the U.S. Bureau of Mines (the Bureau) and it has continued during the past 10 decades, even after the closure of the Bureau in 1996. The research on safer mining technology, formerly done by the Bureau, has now been combined with National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) studies of miners? health to form a unified federal research program to improve the health and safety of miners. This article describes this research and places some of the accomplishments into perspective with other activities in the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Time Line (insert).

While the United States and the rest of the world struggles with record-setting oil prices Canadian oil sands producers are ramping up production to meet demand for oil while also fighting against a host of negative images. In recent months, the price of oil has skyrocketed. Most of that oil comes from Saudi Arabia. In Alberta, Canada there are unconventional oil reserves that rival those in Saudi Arabia in the vast Canadian oil sands, sometimes called the tar sands. Proponents of the oil sands say that Alberta?s oil sands can be a secure source of oil and energy for the United States for many years to come. With new mining and drilling projects, the industry has said that it could quadruple its production to nearly 4 million bbl/day by 2020. Time magazine once called the oil sands, ?Canada?s greatest buried treasure that could satisfy the world?s demand for petroleum for the next century.? So why hasn?t the United States embraced this close, politically secure source of energy? Because, getting usable fuel from the oil sands can be a dirty business, say opponents. The oil sands are a combination of clay, sand, water and bitumen. It is a heavy, black, thick oil. Oil sands can be mined and processed to extract the oil-rich bitumen, which is then refined into oil. The bitumen cannot be pumped from the ground in its natural state. Instead, tar sand deposits are mined, usually using strip mining or openpit techniques, or the oil is extracted by underground heating with additional upgrading. These methods require a huge amount of energy and water and produce a large amount of carbon emissions. Environmental groups that have long spoken out against the oil sands projects got some political backing in the United States in June when a group of mayors from large U.S. cities spoke out against the oil sands, as did presumptive Democratic candidate for U.S. president Barack Obama?s senior energy advisor. During a convention of large-city mayors in Miami, FL, Alberta?s oil sands were singled out in a nonbinding resolution calling for national guidelines to track the lifecycle impact of different types of fossil fuels. The resolution urges cities not to use unconventional sources of energy with a large carbon footprint, such as liquid coal and oil shale and oil sands.

A possible process for extracting tellurium and antimony from a residue generated in alkaline sulfide leaching of telluriumbearing alkaline skimming slag was proposed. The central composite design was employed to define the optimal leaching conditions for tellurium and antimony extractions from the residue sample. Using a 23 factorial matrix, the best performance for tellurium and antimony extractions (96.36% and 99.64%) were obtained at 175 g L−1 Na2S concentration for 80 °C during 60 min. The notable degree for influencing tellurium and antimony extractions was leaching temperature, Na2S concentration, and leaching time. The analysis of variance results indicated that the regression model was significant and suitable to be used for the optimization of independent variables within the range. The model was validated under optimal operating conditions based on the experimental design results. Antimony and tellurium in the leach liquor were separated and recovered by H2O2 oxidation followed by Na2S-Na2SO3 reduction. 98.93% of antimony was precipitated selectively during H2O2 oxidation, while 95.06% of tellurium was precipitated during Na2S-Na2SO3 reduction. NaSb(OH)6 and elemental tellurium was obtained as the product.

This paper describes some of the results of a project for the design and demonstration of subsidence monitoring systems for underground coal mines. The project was designed to test monitoring systems described in an earlier feasibility report (O'Rourke and others, 1979). General objectives of the project were to develop reliable cost- effective monitoring systems for use above caving- type mining operations, over supported mines, and in urban undermined areas. Topics selected for discussion in this paper include a description of the instrumentation systems, the site conditions, problems of installation, resulting recommendations and an over- view of subsidence performance data obtained. There were some particularly difficult problems of installation to overcome at this site. Some of these could be experienced at any surface or under- ground project, others are probably more directly related to Western coal fields. The Jinping-II hydroelectric project in China features four parallel headrace tunnels approximately 18-km- (11-mile-) long. Two will be excavated by tunnel boring machines (TBM) and two by drill-and-blast. A nearby fifth tunnel is being excavated by a 7.2-m (23.6-ft) TBM to draw down ground water in advance of excavating the headrace tunnels. Unique onsite assembly of a 12.43-m (40.7-ft) main beam TBM and backup system was completed on Sept. 18, 2008 in the remote mountains of the Sichuan province. The equipment was assembled onsite, without previously having been assembled and tested in a factory, using a method called onsite first time assembly (OFTA). This paper addresses the following topics: ? Project description including geology and terrain. ? The decision process leading to onsite, first time assembly, the assembly process and logistics, and lessons learned. ? Design features of the TBM and backup system. ? Operational history from startup to the writing of this article.

Amid some of the worst economic conditions that the mining industry has been faced with in more than a decade, the mood among the large crowd at the 114th Annual Northwest Mining Association?s annual meeting was surprisingly upbeat. More than 2,200 attendees showed up at John Asuaga?s Golden Nugget Casino in Reno, NV for the conference held Dec. 1-5. And more than 200 companies exhibited in 240 spaces, including SME and the Minerals Information Institute. The number of attendees and exhibitors were the most for the conference in more than 10 years. The conference was held in Reno/Sparks for just the second time in its illustrious history but began under the cloud of global financial turmoil. Prior to, and during the conference, the industry news headlines were grim, to say the least. An alarming number of mine plans and expansions had been put on hold; hundreds of miners across the United States had been or were in the process of being laid off; commodity prices were falling and some of the biggest mergers in the industry fell through while miners around the world put the brakes on to take a wait-and-see approach. It was a painful time for many, but the downsizing actions taken by many mining companies was exactly what needed to happen, according to Industry Outlook Luncheon featured speaker Frederick Sturm. He is the executive vice president and chief investment strategist and member of Mackenzie?s Investment team. He has earned a reputation as one of Canada?s leading investors in natural-based companies and he also manages the Ivy Global Natural Resource Fund in the United States Sturm said that the mining industry has fallen hard and that he expects it to bounce back quickly, before falling hard again. In these tough times, he said, the companies that have pulled back on production early are doing the right thing in the long run.

This paper will discuss one of the largest construction projects the City of Portland has undertaken. This phase of the Willamette River Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO)project consists of approximately 18,500 ft of tunnel in soft ground, requiring the construction of six deep shafts and jet grout ground improvement. The purpose of the project is to reduce volume of combined sewerage overflows from the drainage areas on the west side of the Willamette River. Bencor-Petrifond-Pacchiosi Joint Venture was awarded a contract to design and construct six deep circular shafts, jet grout ground improvement for three bridges and jet grout ground improvement break-in/outs for some shafts. Of the six shafts the Pumping Station Shaft was the deepest and largest, requiring a permanent ground support system with a deep jet grout ground water cut-off to 335-ft deep. The joint venture used state of the art methods and equipment to achieve its objectives and build the structures through some very difficult alluvial soils to great depths next to the Willamette River. The paper will provide a general discussion of the shaft construction and jet grout ground improvement installed for this phase of the project. It will also discuss some of the technical challenges encountered while effectively managing risk and costs, resulting in a successful project completed in a timely manner.

Geologic resource assessments describe the location, general characteristics, and estimated volumes of resources, whether in-situ or technically recoverable. Such compilations are only an initial step in economic resource evaluation. Forecasts that assume that resources that exist in nature can be commercially produced as needed ignore economic constraints. This paper identifies, by example, the salient features of a geologic assessment that will assure its usefulness for economic analysis. These features are demonstrated with examples of coal resource assessments and coal bed gas assessments.

Additional field evaluations of a modified continuous miner using a new spray system and modified scrubbers have been conducted by the authors. In this demonstration, a comprehensive package for dust control on a continuous miner which included previously developed modifications to the scrubber, scrubber intakes and the innovative chassis spray system was demonstrated. Side-by-side comparisons of the modified miner and regular miner indicated that the miner operator with the modified miner was exposed to 62% less respirable dust. Ram car operators with the modified miner had 38% less respirable dust exposure and the return air on the modified miner had 19% less respirable dust. The mining conditions during side-by-side testing were very comparable. These results support the findings of the modified spray system studies conducted earlier at different mines in Illinois on four occasions and the modified scrubber system field evaluation studies.

Last month's engineering fundamentals article discussed some general considerations of underground mine ventilation. This month's article takes a look at auxiliary ventilation-brattice, fans, and ducting-in underground mines. The need for good, efficient auxiliary ventilation increases as mines get deeper and move farther from ventilation shafts. New mining methods and equipment resulted in faster work area advances, liberating more dust, gas, and heat. As a result, worker health and safety requirements in the face area have become more stringent. For all these reasons the safety and efficiency of any underground mine depends heavily on its auxiliary ventilation. The purpose of such ventilation is to supply sufficient quantities of clean air to the face of the drift and to maintain air quality within desired limits until expelled from the mine.

In 1985, participants of the multi-year Illinois Mine Subsidence Research Program conducted surveys of subsidence effects on crop production from current high-extraction mining methods, selected a site to characterize the profile, strain, fracture development in overburden materials and changes in aquifers produced by subsidence from high-extraction mining, characterized floor materia1 s in three mines, and established bibliographic reference and data base files. The Illinois State Geological Survey, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Illinois Department of Mines and Minerals and Twin Cities Research Center of the U. S. Bureau of Mines are coordinating State and Federally funded research.

The opportunity to make a close study of the available geologic data existing along the line of the California Aqueduct crossing of the Garlock fault in the Tehachapi Mountains was brought about first by my involvement in the prebid examinations, and later with contractors' claim cases. The California Aqueduct crosses through the western end of the Tehachapi Mountains and cuts across the Garlock fault zone at a location about 9 miles east from its junction with the San Andreas fault zone. This is about 65 miles northwest of Los Angeles and 38 miles southeast of Bakersfield (Fig. 1) (1). This map was published after the tunnels were started and shows the corrected geology. At the crossing the fault has north and south branches which extend northeastward for about 22 miles before converging. In the vicinity immediately east of the tunnel line the north branch of the fault starts to converge toward the west. After crossing the line it passes under the upper plate of the apparent easterly extension of the Pastoria thrust fault, so the actual junction with the south branch is obscured. The aqueduct design called for the expected active slip zone of the north Garlock fault branch to be crossed by the 2,800 foot long Pastoria siphon, which connects with the north portal of Tehachapi Tunnel No. 3. The tunnel would extend through the western end of Genghus Ridge which lies between the north branch and the main south Garlock fault zone in Beartrap Canyon. Here again the

Over the years, screen bowl centrifuges have been widely used for dewatering fine coal in coal preparation plants in the United States and elsewhere. Its popularity is attributed to its relatively low cost, its high capacity of providing low moisture content product and its relative ease of operation and maintenance. It is generally recognized in the engineering and scientific communities that screen bowl centrifuges provide some degree of particle size separation while dewatering fine coal in a common application. However, the extent of differential partitioning of coarse and fine particles achievable by a screen bowl centrifuge has not been systematically studied in the past. The present investigation was aimed at conducting a parametric study using a statistically designed experimental program to better understand and optimize the size classification performance of a screen bowl centrifuge. A continuously operating screen bowl centrifuge having a bowl diameter of 0.5 m was used for this study at the Illinois Coal Development Park. Three key operating parameters, i.e., feed flow rate, feed solid content and pool depth, were varied to conduct a total of 17 experiments using a three-level factorial test matrix. Some of the best size separation performances achieved in this study may be described as having an imperfection value of 0.13 at an effective separation size (d50c) of 38 µm and an imperfection value of 0.27 at an effective separation size (d50c) of 2.8 µm. Due to an effective separation of ultrafine high ash materials, the ash content of the screen bowl feed was reduced from 22.3% to a minimum of 8.84% with a combustible recovery of 84.1% and an ash rejection of 71.6%. A higher combustible recovery of 92.1% was achieved at a product ash content of 12.5% with a d50c of 2.8 µm and imperfection of 0.27.

Some large-scale mining companies in Ghana have adopted proactive management strategies in dealing with small-scale (galamsey) miners who have encroached on their concessions. This has been mainly achieved by ceding portions of the concessions held by the companies to the Minerals Commission of Ghana for licensing to the small-scale miners. This development has created an amicable relationship between the mining companies concerned and the galamsey miners in their host community. Ghana’s small-scale gold and diamond industry The small-scale gold and diamond mining industry in Ghana has existed for many centuries as an informal sector. Since the regularization of the activities of small-scale mining in 1989, two types of small-scale miners have emerged — legal and illegal.
