A study was made of the physical and chemical nature of silica minerals found as natural impurities in bentonites and montmorillonitic Fuller&apos;s earth clay products as well as in <10 micron dust from eight processing plants. The results show that the silica minerals present in these clay materials are totally encapsulated or encased in clay. No "free" silica minerals could be observed in SEM images of either granular or powder products or in dust samples collected for MSHA crystalline silica analysis. Silica minerals, such as quartz, are identifiable by SEM and EDS analysis only after removing the clay coatings by vigorous washing. After washing it can be observed that all crystalline quartz grains also have diagenetic overgrowths of what is probably opaline silica. The clay and opaline silica encapsulation of quartz plus the strongly hydro scopic nature of montmorillonite are believed to be responsible for there not being a single confirmed case of silicosis among workers in the subject plants after more than 65 years of production.

Natural resins, those derived from coal and those mined in the Uintah basin, face challenges from synthetic resins that are derived from petroleum sources and rosin or wood sources. In the past, fossil resins from coal were produced by various companies, the last one being Hercules, Inc., which sold BLACKHAWK resin until a fire destroyed the plant in the mid 1970&apos;s. Approximately four to fjve million pounds of BLACKHAWK were produced and sold mostly to the printing ink industry. Uintaite, more commonly known as Gilsonite® resin, was widely used by various industries, notably in printing inks, coatings, stains, adhesives, foundry, asphalt paving, and oil well drilling muds. Gilsonite has lost market share over the last thirty years to various synthetic resins particularly hydrocarbon resins that are derived from petroleum sources.

The current economic climate of low commodity prices and increasing costs has put a lot of pressure on mining companies to ensure their operations will survive through the current economic downturn. While history tells us that the cycle will turn around and prices will go back up again, how many mining companies will be left to take advantage of the next upturn? On average in Australia, the maintenance of mining equipment accounts for up to 50% of operating costs; which equates to nearly $15bn per year. In addition to trying to boost productivity, mining companies are also putting a lot of pressure on reducing costs; all with the intention of maintaining/increasing profit margins and thereby keeping shareholders ?happy?. The whole premise of our economy is based on ?growth? and ?profits?. Movements in the market place force mine owners to ?react? to short term fluctuations. And if that movement is downward; operations people at the sites are forced to start reducing costs. Is this cost reduction done in a logical, systematic way where all risks (short-, medium- and long term) are considered? Invariably, the answer is no! Short term ?fixes? are normally implemented with little, or no, regard for medium- and long-term impact. And the reason for this is that management is not fully focused on the long term; focus is mainly on survival. Decision making is driven by shareholder sentiment and history tells us that this is largely short-term. So given these paramteres to work within, what role can ?Asset Management? play in assisting management to meet shareholder and market requirements whilst still maintaining long-term viability of their operations (to the long-term benefit of shareholders dare I say). As maintenance costs account for nearly half the operating costs of mining companies; the ?smart? management of assets is not only crucial; it is essential for survival in today?s economic climate. What is asset management? Asset Management, according to the UK-based Institute of Asset Management (IAM) is ?the systematic and coordinated activities and practices through which an organization optimally and sustainably manages its assets and asset systems, their associated performance, risks and expenditures over their life cycles for the purpose of achieving its organizational strategic plan.? How important is asset management in today?s mining companies? IAM goes on to say: ?This definition of asset management represents a significantly greater scope than just the maintenance or care of physical assets, and is closer to the central purpose of an organization. Good asset management considers and optimizes the conflicting priorities of asset utilization and asset care, of short-term performance opportunities and long-term sustainability, and between capital investments and subsequent operating costs, risks and performance. ?Life cycle? asset management is also more than simply the consideration of capital costs and operating costs over pre-determined asset ?life? assumptions. Truly optimized, whole life asset management includes risk exposures and performance attributes, and considers the asset?s economic life as the result of an optimization process (depending upon the design, utilization, maintenance, obsolescence and other factors).?

The study area is located in the NW of Uluborlu (Isparta). Massive limestones and alluvial deposits form the lithological units of the study area. The average thickness of the alluvium deposit consisting mainly of light brown - red colored and fine grained clastic sediments which derived from the limestone is about 10 meters. The aim of this study to investigate the uses of this alluvial sediments as tile - brick material. For this aim, disturbed and undisturbed samples have been taken from different depths in the alluvial deposits. Mineralogical compositions have been determined by XRD and major oxide contents by XRF. Laboratory experiments have been carried out to determine the technological properties of the samples. The selected major oxide contents of samples vary between A12O3 (24.6 - 24.12 wt %), CaO (0.76 - 4.27 wt %), Fe2O3 (10.21 - 10.29 wt %), MgO2 (1.25 - 1.51 wt %). CaCO3 and MgCO3 values calculated from the geochemical analyses, are between 1.55 - 1.62 and 2.62 - 3.17 respectively. The ratios of grain size of the samples are 82 % for < 0.2 mm and 5 % for > 3 mm. Geochemical analyses and technological features of the samples indicate that these fine grained sediments of alluvial deposit are suitable in terms of uses as tile - brick material. The potential reserve of this tile - brick material has been determined as 40 million tones.

By using physical and chemical method to increase the bulk density of newly mined coal, the productivity of a mine can be significantly increased. Greater amounts of coal can be placed in fixed volume shuttle car by increasing bulk density. This can increase mine productivity by about 15%. Small, easy to achieve changes in mining operations are required to obtain the increased productivity. This article deals with chemical methods used to increase coal bulk density, the results and discussion are based on experiments performed in the laboratory.

The Middle Mississippi River extends from the mouth of the Ohio River to the mouth of the Missouri River, a distance of about 310 kilometers (km) measured along the river. From its founding in 1764 to the first steamboat arrival in 1817, the City of St. Louis was little more than a trading post. However, with the advent of the shallow-draft steamboat, the Middle Mississippi River rapidly became a major thoroughfare of commerce. In this regard, its importance has been reflected by the development of port facilities at St. Louis and by Federal activity relating to channel maintenance and improvement. First Federal work on the Middle Mississippi River was autho¬rized by Congress in 1824. This work was for snag removal and bank clearing and was directed at reducing the hazards to steamboat traffic, particularly during low-flow periods. During the 1820&apos;s and early 1830&apos;s, the main channel threatened to move toward the Illinois shore and abandon the St. Louis port facilities. In 1836 and 1837, Congress authorized construction of permanent improvements to keep-the river next to St. Louis (Missouri shore). Hanna has developed three production planning systems to help the mine engineers determine the sequence of mining from available ore supples. The Production Scheduling System was developed to give the staff a tool for long range planning by sequencing the removal of blocks from an open pit property. It was needed to determine the year of removal for each block so that the optimum present-valued pit limits could be established by our pit design program. Since in this type of planning short term grade control is less of a factor than it is in daily or monthly planning, the system gives the program greater control and more latitude in block selection. It permits only full blocks to be taken.

"The ultimate objectives of the post-tensioned strands are to connect the precast segments into a ring and provide pre-stress in the tunnel circumference. The method involves inserting the strand through the preliminary embedded duct in the precast concrete segments and then tensioning the strand by jack and fastening it. The post-tensioned strand eliminates the necessity of bolt connections between the segments and may reduce the labor cost and increase speed of lining construction. Pre-stressing of the segmental lining reduces the steel reinforcement or fiber volume in precast segments and/or thickness of the precast segments which would result in reducing the manufacturing cost of them. Pre-stressing would reduce cracking and increase water tightness, and would provide smooth intrados due to eliminated bolt joints and pockets in the tunnel lining. Pre-stressing would increase resistance to internal pressures as well. Further, this system could work very well structurally in tunnels with squeezing rock or tunnels with high seismic loadings. INTRODUCTION OF THE METHODPost-tensioning is commonly used in the construction of bridges, large buildings, nuclear power stations, and water tanks but its utilization in tunnels is still in its infancy.The precast pre-stressed concrete segmental lining can be used for shield tunnels. It provides a reinforced lining ring by the following construction stages and as shown in Figure 1:1) Segments to be assembled by TBM to complete a full ring2) Steel strand to be inserted through embedded duct (sheath) within the segments3) The strand to be tensioned by Jack after anchorage of the other end4) The strand to be fastened after reaching required tension load5) The horizontal strands (if necessary) to be installed, tensioned and fastened6) The recesses and gap between strand and duct to be filled by groutingFurther, Figure 2 shows an unbonded post-tensioning strand model; Figure 3 shows an anchor sample (Xanchor); Figure 4 shows a duct (sheath) and anchor within reinforcement; Figure 5 depicts the posttensioning of a strand by jack; and Figure 6 is an image of the Midorigaoka Trunk line tunnel in Sagamihara, Japan which was constructed using this system."

Historically, mica usage has been low because of limited availability; as a by-product of many small processors, who have lacked motivation for extensive R & D. The discovery of a 30 million ton deposit of 85-90% pure phlogopite, when existing markets are only 300,000 tonnes annually, forced the search for large volume new markets. Increasing costs of energy, petrochemicals, plastics and glass fibers, and environmental constraints on asbestos usage, have led to new opportunities for mica as a reinforcing filler. Extensive research and developments; in beneficiating, processing and treating mica, has been necessary to satisfy these new markets.

It has been recognized that froth flotation of mineral particles utilizing rising flow of micro size air bubbles, counter-current to quiescent falling flow of particles in a column type cell, provides a unique mechanical atmosphere conducive to extension of froth flotation process to much coarser and finer particles sizes than possible with mechanically agitated and aerated cells. 1,2,3,4. This paper describes metallurgical results obtained at several plant installations of large capacity commercial size Deister FLOTAIRE® Column Flotation Cells. These cells utilize air aspiration into surface tension lowered water to generate micro size bubbles. Operating costs, power, wear, and scaling characteristics of rougher, cleaner, and scavenger units are compared with mechanical units. Problems encountered and scale up criteria developed when increasing from 0.20m(8inch) diameter pilot cells to 2.42m(96inch) commercial cells are discussed.

Twin roll sizers are neither compactly designed machines nor are they configured to accommodate underground mobility; in fact, twin roll sizers leave room for improvement in many aspects of the design. The DRC1200 capitalizes on the weaknesses of these machines to make a more productive, easily maintained, and compact twin roll sizer than current market offerings. These strides were made through the inception of the Hard Rock Extraction System (HRXS), which requires a mobile sizer as part of the system. After use of a third party sizer on the HRXS, potential improvements were evident. These improvements include improved structural design to reduce overall footprint and an optimized design to reduce operating cost.

Centrifugal dewatering of fine refuse has proven t to be another application for which this unit has performed exceptionally well.

I cannot help but be reminded, as I stand here today, of my boyhood years and heritage, both of which are inextricably tied to this very valley and are, in a: bay, apropos of the theme of this Keynote Session. I remember the scarcity of people. For example, 48, 000 in Phoenix and 436, 000 in the State in 1930 and 65,000 in Phoenix and 499, 000 in the State in 1940. Today Phoenix boasts a population of over 500, 000 and the State a population of 1, 500,000. I remember the&apos; lack of facilities, goods and services, including gas and electric power. I recall stories of my grandfather who had the freighting or teaming contract to haul all the supplies and generating equipment, by wagon mind you, up the old Apache Trail to Roosevelt Dam. . .a three day trip from the nearest railhead which, by the way, was not Phoenix, for it did not merit a railhead on those days, but the village of Maricopa approximately 25 miles south of Phoenix. I remember chopping firewood, heating wash water on an open fire in a No. 3 wash tub at the rear of the house and doing my school homework by the light of a kerosene lamp just 25 to 35 years ago within what is now a large metropolitan area

The MANpower SUPport Program (MANSUPP), a part of the Mine Management Support System (MMSS), allows an underground coal mine site user to determine manpower requirements for production support work by considering ongoing operations and current mine conditions. The objective of MANSUPP is to plan a detailed manpower structure for a mine by incorporating a production schedule, condition-modified work standards and management preferences to predict required manhours for various activities, for example, belt moves. The program is written in Quattro Pro version 3.0 (Lotus 1-2-3 compatible) utilizing the command language, macro and formula capabilities.

Since the discovery of high temperature superconductors has led to extensive interest and conjecture regarding their potential to change contemporary technology, discussions of the impact on the metallurgical and other industries have naturally arisen. In this paper we present data showing the possible impact of these developments on the materials related to the fabrication and proliferation of devices based on superconductor materials. We observe that the largest volume of effort with LTSC will be for the demonstration of high power devices while applied research relating to processing will remain the principal HTSC activity. We also note that in the next decade copper consumption in the US is expected to remain essentially at the current level while the need for Nb and Sn,; two major components of LTSC, will grow at a faster rate both in the US and the world. Although the use of superconductor-based magnetic separation is anticipated to increase, no major impact of these components on the metallurgical industries is expected.

In the operation of today&apos;s large scale ore-processing mills, it is extremely important to have some way of making an objective evalu¬ation of the performance of the available flotation reagents. Attempts to do this may often result in inconclusive findings since the magnitude of the difference in the mill results for any two reagents is apt to be quite small compared to the variability introduced by the process and &apos;the analytical procedures used to measure them. In cases where two reagents give vastly; different mill results, evaluation becomes a simple matter and as such deserves no further attention here. A question of primary concern, however, is how a mill can go about evaluating the performance of two reagents which may, for example, give a difference of only 0.001% copper in the-tailings or of 0.2% in copper recovery. The casual observer may feel that such small differences may be of little importance, but in a mill-whose daily tonnage is between 30 and 40 thousand, these differences could mean a substantial savings. Before the presentation of an actual example of a reagent testing scheme designed for just this-purpose, perhaps a few minutes should be devoted to a review of some statistical methodology to be used later in the discussion.

The Monsanto Company&apos;s Henry Mine is located 17 miles northeast of Soda Springs, in the southeast corner of Idaho. Ore being mined is phosphate rock which lies in the Permian Phosphoria formation. The ore is the raw material for Monsanto&apos;s three furnace elemental "P" plant near Soda Springs. The finished product from the furnaces is elemental phosphorus which is subsequently used in the manufacture of detergents, food preservatives, fire retardants and other consumer items. Mining is by open pit methods using 0-9 crawler tractors to rip and push-load rubber tired scrapers in stripping and mining operations. The equipment spread consists of six D-9G crawler tractors, four Caterpillar 6578 scrapers, eight Euclid S-24 scrapers, one Reich T750 drill and one Caterpillar No. 16 patrol plus various support equipment. Stripping is performed on a 12-month basis, two shifts per day. Mining is performed mainly in the summer months on a one shift basis. The hauling season begins May 15 and ends November 1 due to freezing weather and snow conditions. Annual production is 1,000,000 tons of phosphate rock and 2,500,000 to 3,000,000 yards of stripping. Stripping, mining and hauling is performed for Monsanto by Dravo-Soda Springs, a mining contractor. Dravo-Soda Springs owns, operates and maintains all equipment used in stripping, mining and hauling. The contractor is paid for stripping by the bank yard and for ore mined and hauled on a tonnage basis. The Monsanto elemental phosphorus plant began production in 1952 with ore being trucked to the plant from the Ballard Mine. Haulage was over public roads in 15, 24-ton semitrucks. A private haul road was constructed from the Ballard Mine to the Monsanto Plant in 1958 and 1959 to accommodate trucks with two twenty-yard trailers. This 11/ mile road was first used in the 1959 hauling season. In 1965, five new Kenworth tractors with two, &apos;forty yard trailers were introduced into the haulage system. Since the petroleum crisis in 1973, charcoal1 is being considered one of the most important fuel for the Brazilian consumers, mainly for pellet&apos;s producers. In replacing fuel by charcoal mixed up with ore, obviously one of the first thing to be investigated is its influence in the product&apos;s quality. Special attention has been given to the metallurgical characteristics. This paper infocus the effect of increasing dosings of charcoal to the pellet&apos;s porosity and how other physical and metallurgical characteristics will be affected accordingly. This work was carried out using two different finesses of charcoal and dosing varied from 0.5 to 2.0%.

The Morenci In-pit Crusher and Conveyor System has been designed with safe production and cost savings in mind. Large open pit mines around the world have been installing semi-mobile crushers and linking them with a pit conveyor system to lower unit cost. At Morenci two 60/89 in. gyratory crushers are incorporated into the semi-mobile crushing plants. The ore is reduced to -8 in. and transported out of the mine on a 60 in. steel cable belt. This paper includes an overview of the Morenci In-pit Crusher and Conveyor System from the drawing board to open pit installation and finally a discussion on operating and repair considerations.

No other region of the world is enjoying the tremendous growth of power use that is currently being experienced in Asia. Fortunately for those of us in the coal industry -particularly in Asia -the preponderance of the power plants being planned or under construction designed to use coal as the power plant fuel. This has produced a significant increase in the demand for steam coal, which has in turn encouraged many of us in the industry to develop new coal mines. One country that has enjoyed very substantial growth in coal production is Indonesia. This developing country of 195,000,000 people who live on the nearly 13,000 islands of Indonesia have emerged very quickly to become the third largest exporter of steam coal, following only Australia and South Africa. Almost all coal in Indonesia is mined by surface mining methods. This paper will examine the surface mining of coal in Indonesia, as it continues to be an important part of the supply equation for coal in Asia.
